In this work, a series of zinc partially substituted magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3-xZnxO4, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4), were synthesised through a facile precipitation-oxidation method. The partial substitution of zinc into the magnetite (Fe3O4) structure was confirmed by the collective findings of nitrogen sorption, XRD and TG-DTG analysis. It was found that the partial substitution of zinc slightly changed the textural properties of the resultant Fe3-xZnxO4 nanoparticles. From the XRD analysis, there was no visible formation of secondary phase or impurity peaks in the nanoparticles. These findings indicated the partial substitution of zinc into the Fe3O4 crystal structure with a good dispersion within the Fe3O4 matrix. © 2016 Author(s).

In Trinidad and Tobago, cocoa production is monitored by the Cocoa and Coffee Industry Board, which was established in 1961. Cocoa, used to make chocolate, is a traditional export crop in the country. Buildings like those pictured would be used for processing, drying, sorting, and storing cocoa beans. In this image, several children and adults can be found in the yard near buildings on the cocoa plantation. The buildings are made with wood and have zinc paneled roofs, some of the steps are made of concrete. The level flat area between the buildings on the far right would be used to dry cocoa beans. The beans would be spread out evenly on this area, then raked and turned so that beans were exposed to the sun for adequate drying. Slide labeled Cocoa Plantation Trinidad.

Two steel pan instrument makers are hammering the surfaces of drums to make the range of sound for steel pan instruments. One of the men is hammering a white steel drum, while the other is in the distance near red steel drums. These particular steel pans are made from used steel oil drums. The steel pan, a percussion instrument, originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is one of the country’s national emblems. In the yard are other used steel oil drums, white metal steel pan stands, and many breadfruit trees. In the background are buildings, some made of wood with zinc paneled roofs. There is also a poster advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra, a steel band active during the 1960s and sponsored by Shell Oil Company. Some of the notices in the yard read as follows: "Notice don't sit stand lean or prop on the stands," "We are the greatest," "Notice absolutely no unnecessary coasting in the yard." A man on a bicycle riding away from the Black River post office and bank. The building houses a branch of the Government Savings Bank and the post office. The Government Savings Bank was established in 1870 and was opened daily. With the act of the 23rd of June 1973, the assets of the bank were used to establish the Workers Savings and Loan Bank. On the 31st of October 1671, Jamaica became the first British colony to establish a post office. This two story building has a zinc roof with fretwork and also sends telegraphs. Black River is part of a protected National Heritage District in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. Slide labeled Jam. Black River (S.).

Clarke’s Court, operated by Grenada Distillers Limited, is a rum distillery located in Woodlands Valley, Saint George, Grenada and has been in operation since 1937. Clarke’s Court is also the island’s largest distillery. This image shows a pile of sugar cane husks on the grounds of Clarke’s Court. Résumé : In this study, we assessed past and present influence of ancient mining activity on metal(loid) enrichment in sediments of a former mining watershed (Gardon River, SE France), that is now industrialized and urbanized. A sedimentary archive and current sediments were characterized combining geochemical analyses, zinc isotopic analyses and sequential extractions. The archive was used to establish local geochemical background and recorded (i) increasing enrichment factors (EFs) for Pb, Zn, Cd, Tl, Hg, As and Sb throughout the industrial era, (ii) a contamination peak in 1976 attributed to a tailings dam failure, and (iii) current levels in 2002 and 2011 similar to those of 1969, except for Sb and Hg, reflecting a persisting contamination pattern. Inter-element relationships and spatial distribution of EF values of current sediments throughout the watershed suggested that both ancient and current contamination had a common origin for Pb, Zn, Cd, Tl and As related to the exploitation of Pb/Zn mineralization while old Sb mines and coal extraction area were the main sources for Sb and Hg respectively. This prevailing mining origin was reflected for Zn by a relatively uniform isotopic composition at δ66Zn = 0.23 ± 0.03‰, although slight decrease from 0.23‰ to 0.18‰ was recorded from upstream to downstream sites along the river course in relation with the contribution of the lighter δ66Zn signature (~ 0.08‰) of acid mine drainage impacted tributaries. Results from sequential extractions revealed that the potential mobility of the studied metal(loid)s varied in the order Sb < Tl ≈ As < Zn < Pb < Cd, with an increase of the mobile pool for Cd, Pb, Zn and to a lesser extent for As and Tl associated to increased enrichment. Altogether, these results tend to demonstrate that ancient mining activity still contributes to metal enrichment in the sediments of the Gardon River and that some of these metals may be mobilized toward the water compartment.
