Description : Les statues exposées lors de la Santa Muerte ont un caractère sacré et immanent tout en partageant une proximité avec l'humanité. Silvia Mancini décrypte la pratique de ce culte tant dans sa dimension spirituelle, que sociale ou encore traditionnelle. Il ne faut pas en effet se limiter à une interprétation d'un syncrétisme entre un culte aztèque et le christianisme.

Description : Au début, des commémorations sporadiques de l'abolition de l'esclavage ont eu lieu. Puis en 1998, pour le 150° anniversaire, une véritable fièvre commémorative se répand dans les anciennes colonies ayant connu l'esclavagisme. Lors de cette commémoration le fait esclavagiste prend le pas sur le fait abolitionniste. Corroboré en 2001 par la reconnaissance de la traite négrière et l'esclavagisme comme crime contre l'humanité par la loi troubiran, le 10 juin s'institutionnalise autour de manifestations, dont le point d'orgue est en 2008, l'inauguration d'une statue célébrant le marronage et l'abolition. Depuis la superposition des mémoires entre l'abolitionniste, l'esclavage, le marronage, la traite négrière... mais aussi la confusion avec le bagne, les amérindiens... tend à faire perdre l'élan unificateur du début des commémorations.

Description : Richard Price présente la nouvelle édition de son livre Le bagnard et le colonel, parue en 2016. En 1925 en Martinique une émeute se solde par dix morts et quatorze blessés. Dans la ville du Diamant des pêcheurs brandissent une effigie en bois d'un colonel, riche propriétaire de l'usine locale, pour protester contre la fraude électorale. L'auteur de cette statue est Médard Aribot, un original qui vit dans une grotte. On dit que c'est pour cet acte d'insolence qu'il sera condamné et envoyé au bagne. Cinquante ans plus tard, sa vie est célébrée par des cartes postales, guides touristiques, pièces de théâtre et costumes de carnaval. Richard Price dénoue les fils de cette histoire. II montre comment les tensions de la société martiniquaise entre colonialisme, passé esclavagiste et modernité se cristallisent autour de cette sculpture et de l'histoire de son auteur, emblèmes de résistance. Et comment la mémoire peut produire la folklorisation de la vie quotidienne et transformer l'habitat et l'oeuvre d'un marginal en simples manifestations touristiques.

Description : Au XIXe siècle, une vaste région comprise entre les fleuves Amazone et Oyapock est connue par les guyanais sous la dénomination du Contesté, ou Contesté franco-brésilien. Depuis les débuts de l'implantation française en Guyane, aucune frontière n'a en effet jamais été tracée avec le Portugal, puis le Brésil indépendant (en 1822). La superficie de la Guyane française varie ainsi du simple au double, selon que l'on y intègre ou non le territoire Contesté. En 1862, c'est le statu quo. Les deux parties, échouant une nouvelle fois à travers un accord, décident que cet immense territoire restera une zone neutre où les gouvernements français et brésiliens n'interviendront que pour régler des questions de justice regardant leurs ressortissants respectifs. Ni état ni police, ce no man's land est notamment un refuge pour les bagnards en cavale et les esclaves brésiliens fugitifs. Dans une période d'expansionnisme européen, certains vont cependant y voir une nouvelle terre de colonisation pour la France, un territoire bien plus sain et plus prometteur que la Guyane « officielle ». Parmi d'autres, les explorateurs Henri Coudreau et A. Laurencin vont présenter cette région comme un nouvel Eden, une terre « favorisée par le Créateur » ou s'épanouira une « nouvelle race » de colons. Au-delà de ces descriptions utopiques, reprises dans plusieurs revues de voyages et quelques romans populaires, nous rappellerons également la dimension raciale et impérialiste sous-adjacent à cette représentation de la « Terre promise ». L'histoire du Contesté s'achève en 1900 avec l'attribution de ce territoire au Brésil.

Pictured is the back of the Queen Victoria statue by sculpture John Adams-Acton, flanked by two cannons. The statue, located in Nassau's Parliament Square, was erected in celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24, 1905. To the right of the statue can be seen the former Colonial Secretary's Office, built in 1805 by James Tait, which today houses the government administrative offices. Parliament Square's pink government buildings, examples of Classical style architecture, were constructed in the early 1800s by Loyalists who came to the Bahamas from North Carolina. In the background is the former Adderley building, where the Churchill building now stands.

This monument to Christopher Columbus stands before the front entrance to the Government House in Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas. The Government House, an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture features a four columned portico. In 1492, Columbus became the first European to visit the Bahamas when he landed on San Salvador. The statue, built in London, was imported by Sir James Carmichael Smyth in 1830. The current Government House, with its four columned porticos, was completed by 1806. It is the home of the governor-general, the queen’s representative in The Bahamas. Sections of the building were renovated after the hurricane of 1929. The Duke of Windsor was assigned Governor of the Bahamas in 1940 and lived in the house during that time.

In December 1994, a public monument, called the Liberty Column, was inaugurated in Miami commemorating the journey and suffering of Cuban rafters. Designed by sculptor Enzo Gallo, the statue consists of hands raised to the sky and a round marble column set in a fountain. It is located at Bay Front Park in Miami in front of the Hotel Intercontinental. The statue was vandalized in 2004 and restored by Cuban-American sculptor Marc Andries Smit. The plaque beside the monument reads, “Since 1959, thousands of Cubans have perished anonymously while fleeing tyranny in small boats and makeshift rafts although their names, like martyred refugees of other nations, are written solely on the pages of the sea, this column is a permanent testimony of the human need to be free.”

This statue is located at el Palacio de los Capitanes Generales in Havana, Cuba. The palace used to house the captain general, or governor of Cuba when the island was under Spanish control. It is located on calle tacon near obispo, in old Havana.
Christopher Columbus marble monument was installed in the year 1862 by the Italian sculptor J. Cucchiari.

In Trinidad and Tobago, carnival celebrations begin after Christmas and peak during the Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Costumed masqueraders and festival revelers partake in the two-day street parade, generally accompanied by soca, calypso, and steel pan music, before beginning the Lenten season. The National Museum and Art Gallery hosts a permanent ongoing exhibit of masks and costumes from past carnivals. The carnival costume, pictured in the center, is made with long and short white feathers and features highlights of black feathers. Gold ornaments decorate the costume which also has a ram’s head near the waist area. Next to this costume is an ornate peacock head gear which has been placed atop an armless statue with a human face. Slide labeled Trin. 12.

Résumé : "L'hôtel de ville est construit à partir de 1848 par un entrepreneur dénommé Krous. Il est détruit par un incendie en 1890 et un cyclone en 1891. Un nouveau bâtiment est inauguré en septembre 1901. La façade est ornée des armes de la ville et de la devise patriotique ""Semper Francia"" : la France toujours. Doté d'un campanile, le nouvel édifice est un bel exemple de construction antillaise avec une forte présence du bois et des décors de frises dentelées. A l'intérieur, au premier étage, une statue, de 1879, due à Albert Carrier-Belleuse, représente un esclave dont les fers viennent d'être brisés ; le socle porte les noms de tous les membres du gouvernement provisoire de 1848.
