Résumé : (Biographical) From Wikipedia: John Frank Stevens (25 April 1853 – 2 June 1943) was an American engineer who built the Great Northern Railway in the United States and was chief engineer on the Panama Canal between 1905 and 1907. Biography: Stevens was born in rural Maine, near West Gardiner to John Stevens, a tanner and farmer, and Harriet Leslie French. He attended Maine State Normal School (now the University of Maine at Farmington) for two years. At the conclusion of his schooling in 1873, bleak economic conditions held little promise of a job, and he chose to go west. Entry into the field of civil engineering evolved from his experience in the Minneapolis city engineer's office. For two years he carried out a variety of engineering tasks, including surveying and building railroads, and at the same time gained experience and an understanding of the subject. He became a practical engineer, self-taught and driven by a self-described "bull-dog tenacity of purpose." In 1878 Stevens married Harriet T. O'Brien. They had five children, two of whom died in infancy. By the age of 33, in 1886, Stevens was principal assistant engineer for the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway, and in charge of building the line from Duluth, Minnesota to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Although a large part of his work involved surveying, he assisted in all phases of railroading: reconnaissance, locating, organizing, and construction. In 1889, Stevens was hired by James J. Hill as a locating engineer for the Great Northern Railway. Stevens earned wide acclaim in 1889 when he explored Marias Pass, Montana, and determined its practicability for a railroad. Stevens was an efficient administrator with remarkable technical skills and imagination. He discovered Stevens Pass through the Cascade Mountains, set railroad construction standards in the Mesabi Range of northern Minnesota, and supervised construction of the Oregon Trunk Line. Hill promoted him to chief engineer in 1895, and later to general manager. During his time at the Great Northern, Stevens built over a thousand miles of railroad, including the original Cascade Tunnel. Stevens Pass in the Cascade Range was named for him. (Most other Pacific Northwest landmarks with the word "Stevens" are named after Isaac Stevens, who is of no relation.) Panama Canal: Stevens left the Great Northern in 1903 for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, where he was promoted to vice-president. Then, in 1905, at Hill's recommendation, he was hired by Theodore Roosevelt as chief engineer on the Panama Canal. Stevens' primary achievement in Panama was to build the infrastructure needed for the completion of the canal. "The digging," he said, "is the least thing of all." He proceeded immediately to build warehouses, machine shops, and piers. Communities for the personnel were planned and built to include housing, schools, hospitals, churches, and hotels. He authorized extensive sanitation and mosquito-control programs that eliminated yellow fever and other diseases from the Isthmus. Reflecting his background, he saw the early stage of the canal project itself as primarily a problem in railroad engineering, which included rebuilding the Panama Railway and devising a rail-based system for disposing of the soil from the excavations. Stevens argued the case against a sea level canal like the French had tried to build. He successfully convinced Theodore Roosevelt of the necessity of a high-level canal built with dams and locks. Resignation: Stevens resigned suddenly from the Canal project in 1907 to Roosevelt's great annoyance, as the focus of the work turned to construction of the canal itself. As a railroad engineer, Stevens had little expertise in building locks and dams, and probably realized he was no longer the best person for the remainder of the job. Stevens would also have been aware that the original great Cascade Tunnel, for which he was responsible, was in hindsight built in error too close to the ruling grade and was perhaps turning from a credit to a debit. The true reasons for his resignation have never been known. Subsequent career: Following the collapse of Imperial Russia in 1917, leaders of the provisional government appealed to President Wilson for help with their transportation systems. Stevens was selected to chair a board of prominent U.S. railroad experts sent to Russia to rationalize and manage a system that was in disarray; among his work was on the Trans-Siberian Railway. After the overthrow of the provisional government, the board's work ceased. Stevens remained in Allied-occupied Manchuria and in 1919 headed the Inter-Allied Technical Board charged with the administration and operation of the Chinese Eastern and Siberian railways. He remained in an advisory capacity until occupying Allied troops were withdrawn; he finally left in 1923. After his return to the United States Stevens continued to work as a consulting engineer, ending his career in Baltimore in the early 1930s. He was awarded the Franklin Institute's Franklin Medal in 1930. He then retired to Southern Pines, North Carolina, where he died at the age of 90 in 1943.

Dunn, born in Minneapolis MN in 1928, received a BA from Harvard College in 1950, an MA from Princeton University in 1952, and a PhD in History in 1955 from Princeton. He taught at Princeton, at the University of Michigan, the University of Oxford, and for 39 years at the University of Pennsylvania, retiring from Penn in 1996 as the Roy F. and Jeannette P. Nichols Professor of American History. Among his publications are Puritans and Yankees: The Winthrop Dynasty of New England, 1630-1717 (1962), The Age of Religious Wars, 1559-1715 (1971, 2d edition 1979), Sugar and Slaves: The Rise of the Planter Class in the English West Indies, 1624-1713 (1972), The Papers of William Penn, 1644-1718 (4 vols.), edited with Mary Maples Dunn and seven Associate Editors (1981-1987), and The Journal of John Winthrop, 1630-1649, edited with Laetitia Yeandle (1996). In 1978 Dunn founded the Philadelphia Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania (renamed the McNeil Center in 1998), which offers dissertation fellowships to graduate students from universities in the U.S. and abroad who wish to do research in Philadelphia libraries and archives. He directed this Center in most years from 1978 to 2000.

Similarity of form between subaerial and submarine landscapes affected by erosion could suggest similarities in the process of erosion, such as by runoff and sedimentary flows, respectively. On the other hand, if aspects of form vary, its characteristics may be used to identify the environmental origin of erosion. Towards these goals, this contribution addresses the morphology of submarine volcanoes (seamounts) with widely differing histories of erosion. One set from the Pacific Ocean never exposed above sea level includes Cretaceous-age seamounts near Hawai'i (including Apu'upu'u Seamount), two seamounts of < 3 Ma in age near a mid-ocean ridge and the 11-4 Ma Jasper Seamount. These seamounts are all isolated from continents and hence from any erosion associated with mass wasting of unstable terrigenous deposits. In such isolated submarine environments, surfaces erode slowly from in situ weathering, mass wasting and scouring by sedimentary flows initiated by slope failure in pelagic or bedrock materials. The Pacific seamounts are compared with Valencia Seamount in the western Mediterranean, exposed subaerially for 100-400 k.y. during the Messinian Salinity Crisis before 5 Ma. Multibeam and deeply towed sidescan sonar data of Valencia Seamount reveal features typical of subaerial erosion of volcanic islands, such as canyons and relatively uneroded sectors (planezes) between them. Using a simple topographical reconstruction, the apparent erosion depth typically reaches 100 m within canyons and up to 180 m in places. Whereas the younger Pacific seamounts do not show these erosional features, the much older Cretaceous seamounts do have channels, which in one example suggests up to 200 m of incision. Both Valencia and Apu'upu'u seamounts have channel longitudinal profiles that are steep and typically linear to concave upwards. The erosion depth of Apu'upu'u Seamount is significant, despite the seamount's persistent submarine environment, because of its greater age, steeper flanks and greater contributing areas to channels compared with Valencia Seamount. These results illustrate that the channel morphology resulting from submarine erosion can become similar to that produced by subaerial erosion given sufficient time.

Résumé : We report on a multidisciplinary study of cold seeps explored in the Central Nile deep-sea fan of the Egyptian margin. Our approach combines in situ seafloor observation, geophysics, sedimentological data, measurement of bottom-water methane anomalies, pore-water and sediment geochemistry, and Th-230/U dating of authigenic carbonates. Two areas were investigated, which correspond to different sedimentary provinces. The lower slope, at similar to 2100 m water depth, indicates deformation of sediments by gravitational processes, exhibiting slope-parallel elongated ridges and seafloor depressions. In contrast, the middle slope, at similar to 1650 m water depth, exhibits a series of debris-flow deposits not remobilized by post-depositional gravity processes. Significant differences exist between fluid-escape structures from the two studied areas. At the lower slope, methane anomalies were detected in bottom-waters above the depressions, whereas the adjacent ridges show a frequent coverage of fractured carbonate pavements associated with chemosynthetic vent communities. Carbonate U/Th age dates (similar to 8 kyr BP), pore-water sulphate and solid phase sediment data suggest that seepage activity at those carbonate ridges has decreased over the recent past. In contrast, large (similar to 1 km(2)) carbonate-paved areas were discovered in the middle slope, with U/Th isotope evidence for ongoing carbonate precipitation during the Late Holocene (since similar to 5 kyr BP at least). Our results suggest that fluid venting is closely related to sediment deformation in the Central Nile margin. It is proposed that slope instability leads to focused fluid flow in the lower slope and exposure of 'fossil' carbonate ridges, whereas pervasive diffuse flow prevails at the unfailed middle slope.

In this study, we report new U-Pb zircon ages and amphibole and biotite 40Ar-39Ar cooling ages for igneous and metaigneous rocks from the eastern portion of the Borborema Province (NE Brazil). We combine these results with preliminary thermobarometric estimates and existing data to place constraints on the timing and duration of the Brasiliano-Pan-African Orogeny in northeastern Brazil and on the subsequent late- to post-orogenic history. The Alcantil orthogneiss contains a complex zircon population, but the youngest concordant analyses yielded an age of 632 ± 17 Ma (2σ). These grains have low Th/U ratios (<0.1), and the age of 632 Ma is therefore interpreted as dating the metamorphic event responsible for the acquisition of the gneissic fabric. In the Caruaru biotite amphibole orthogneiss, concordant analyses provided an age of 618 ± 4 Ma (2σ), which we relate to emplacement of the protolith of the Caruaru orthogneiss. Together with available U-Pb data from the literature, the 632-600 Ma age range is regarded as dating development of a regional flat-lying foliation coeval with high-grade metamorphism (upper amphibolite facies conditions). The 586 ± 3 Ma age (2σ) of the Panelas pluton is similar to those of other granitic plutons associated with a voluminous plutonism of high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic nature that occurred at 590-580 Ma. This plutonism slightly predated or was synchronous with development of large strike-slip shear zones. Amphibole grains yielded 40Ar-39Ar ages ranging from 584 ± 4 Ma to about 530 Ma, suggesting that regional temperatures remained near the closing temperature of this mineral (≈500 °C) for a long time. Most 40Ar-39Ar biotite ages range from 552 to 533 Ma, but two samples yielded plateau ages of 519 ± 5 Ma and 509 ± 5 Ma. The inferred rather slow cooling of the studied region possibly reflects low rates of unroofing, allowing persistence of a protracted thermal anomaly caused by the massive injection of magmas at the end of the Neoproterozoic.

Metasedimentary rocks in the transition zone between the Pernambuco-Alagoas Domain and the Sergipano Belt (southern Borborema Province, NE Brazil) were studied in order to place constraints on the geological evolution of this portion of West Gondwana. High-grade metamorphic conditions are recorded by the garnet-sillimanite assemblage and common anatexis in pelitic paragneisses. Two samples dated by LA-ICP-MS in the north yielded a predominance of early Neoproterozoic detrital zircons, with age peaks between 990 Ma and 827 Ma, with the youngest grain suggesting deposition after 670 Ma. Low Th/U zircons (Th/U < 0.1) in these samples display a significant spread in ages, from 691 to 568 Ma. One sample in the south is dominated by a homogenous population of Paleoproterozoic grains, with a 2200 Ma peak. The southernmost sample also contains Paleoproterozoic zircons but the most abundant population is Neoproterozoic, and characterized by age peaks at c. 670, 647 and 623 Ma. These results show that deposition of sediments in the southern PEAL Domain and in the northern Sergipano Belt occurred in the Late Neoproterozoic. The differing age spectra between samples are correlated with potential source rocks in the study area or in its proximity, reflecting variable input from local sources. The data are interpreted to indicate that during the course of an extensional event at c. 673-647 Ma, Tonian granitic intrusions and synextensional metamorphic rocks were unroofed and eroded to provide zircons for sediments deposited in the north, whereas Paleoproterozoic and synextensional magmatic rocks were the main sources for sediments in the south. Peak metamorphic conditions and contractional deformation are constrained to c. 630-600 Ma.

Of the 2,977,123 young children drinking tap water in France, some were drinking water having concentrations above the 2011 World Health Organization drinking water quality guidelines: respectively 498 (CI 95%: 0-1484) over 700 mu g/L of Ba; 121,581 (CI 95%: 7091-236,070) over 50 mg/L of Na; 2044 (CI 95%: 0-6132) over 70 mu g/L of Ni, and 78,466 (17,171-139,761) over 10 mu g/L of Pb. Since it is representative, this tap water contamination data can be used for integrated exposure assessment, in conjunction with diet and environmental (dust and soil) exposure data. Résumé : In situ microbialites occurring in reef rocks dredged between 80 and 130 in water depth on the modern fore-reef slopes of Tahiti and the Marquesas islands yield ages ranging from 17,100 2900 to 4410 2250 years BP, suggesting that they played a prominent role during the last deglacial sea level rise. Microbialites developed in both shallow and deep water depositional environments where they characterize various zones of the reef tracts (reef crests, upper reef slopes, deep fore-reef slopes), reflecting contrasting scenarios of microbialite development involving ''reefal microbialites'' in shallow-water settings and ''slope microbialites'' that formed in environments deeper than 1020 in and extending down to more than 100 m. Reefal microbialites correspond to a late stage of encrustation of the dead parts of coral colonies, or more commonly, of related encrusting organisms (red algae and foraminifers), thus forming surface crusts. Slope microbialites generally form the ultimate stage of a biological succession indicating a deepening sequence, whereby shallow water corals and associated encrusting organisms are replaced by deeper water assemblages of red algae and foraminifers before microbialite growth. The precipitation of phosphatic-iron-manganese crusts and the deposition of planktonic micritic limestones on the microbialites characterize a deepening-upward sequence. The widespread development of microbialites in reef sequences from the Last Deglaciation characterizes a period of environmental degradation consequential oil the rapid sea-level rise and abrupt climatic changes of that time. The reported biological succession reflects changes in water quality, and especially an increase in nutrients. In shallow-water settings, increased alkalinity and nutrient availability in interstitial waters were related to surface fluxes and terrestrial groundwater seepage while slope environments were exposed to continuous upwelling of nutrient-rich deeper waters during the last deglacial sea level rise. The age differences between corals and overlying slope microbialites range from 1600 to 8400 years, based on high-precision U-series age measurements of both corals and microbialites, and indicates that a significant time (several thousand years) elapsed between the development of the coralgal frameworks and the growth of slope microbialite crusts. Microbialites cannot be considered as part of the drowning event some 14,000 years ago that resulted in the demise of reef frameworks in the 90-110 m present depth range, but are Substantially younger.
