Université des Antilles et de la Guyane Description : The globalization process, accelerating in the last 20 years, has raised important developmental stakes : on the one hand, economic questions with the multiplication of exchanges and its concentration in certain regions of the world; on the other hand globalization has also raised important social issues, with the acceleration of demographic flux and the whole question of "inclusion" associated with this; the issues are also environmental, through increased needs and resource limitations. Tourism represents the ideal vector of this globalization and the stakes it represents. By focusing on international tourism in a country in the South, this article seeks to better understand the stakes involved in developing international tourism resources, by seeking an answer to the question : In what ways can ecotourism constitute a real strategy for economic development, poverty alleviation, and contribute to economic growth and the protection of natural resources ? Wedding of the Year Auteur(s) : Guyana Chronicle Résumé : (Funding) Support for the development of the technical infrastructure and partner training provided by the United States Department of Education TICFIA program. Tales from the morgue… (A look at some of the stories that made the news ‘back-in-the-day’ with Clifford Stanley) Wedding of the year ANOTHER strange ‘wedding’ ….an all men affair… sent the down-town Charlestown area into a furore on Friday night as thousands blocked the traffic to get a glimpse of the ‘yellow tie’ men. The cutting of the three-tier cake was carried out without police intervention, unlike the last time when they were arrested and charged. The ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ kissed afterwards. Most of the notable characters, including ‘Anna’, ‘Miss Tiger Bay’, ‘Miss Ann’s Grove’, ‘Miss Bougala’, ‘Lady Cross Street’, ‘Countess of Berbice’, ‘Princess Desiree’, ‘Lady Ivlor’, ‘The Princess Royal of Essequibo’ and ‘Miss Hadfield Street’ were in attendance as bridesmaids. They displayed the latest fashions in headwear, shoes and dresses, causing spectators to gasp as they wended their way up to the reception hall on Russell Street. The ‘bride’ wore white chantilly lace over slipper satin. ‘Her’ headdress was a coronet of seed pearls. ‘She’ was bedecked with diamante necklace and earrings to match. The wedding portrait was taken at Lees Photo Studio of High Street, where mounted Police were called out to control the huge crowd which was gathered there. Later, two platoons of riot squad men were rushed to the wedding reception area to ease a traffic jam. (Guiana Graphic: Page One, July 12, 1959) Editor’s Note: Does anyone know whether any of these ‘girls’ are still alive? If so, do drop us a line. A Drawing of the Emilio Pons Cigar Factory. Auteurs secondaires : Cigar City Collection Résumé : This cigar-making industry has contributed materially to the development and growth of Tampa during the last five years, and it promises much greater benefit in the future. It was in October, 1885, that Martinez Ybor & Co., who began manufacturing in Havana in 1854, and afterward put up a large factory in Key West, came to Tampa to investigate the resources and advantages offered for cigar-making. They soon afterward purchased forty acres of land in the Fourth Ward, cleared it of the pines, wild-oats and gophers, and built a factory, a large boarding-house or hotel, and several small cottages for the workmen whom they brought from Key West and Havana. The venture proved a success from the start and improvements were added. The original factory, a wooden structure, is now the opera house, and a large brick factory has succeeded the first one, where the daily output of the 450 cigar makers employed is40,000 to 50,000 cigars. Then came Sanchez & Haya, Emilio Pons, and others, and all declare that they are doing an excellent business. Environmental significance of microbialites in reef environments during the last deglaciation Auteur(s) : Camoin, G Cabioch, G Eisenhauer, A Braga, J Hamelin, B Lericolais, Gilles Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : In situ microbialites occurring in reef rocks dredged between 80 and 130 in water depth on the modern fore-reef slopes of Tahiti and the Marquesas islands yield ages ranging from 17,100 2900 to 4410 2250 years BP, suggesting that they played a prominent role during the last deglacial sea level rise. Microbialites developed in both shallow and deep water depositional environments where they characterize various zones of the reef tracts (reef crests, upper reef slopes, deep fore-reef slopes), reflecting contrasting scenarios of microbialite development involving ''reefal microbialites'' in shallow-water settings and ''slope microbialites'' that formed in environments deeper than 1020 in and extending down to more than 100 m. Reefal microbialites correspond to a late stage of encrustation of the dead parts of coral colonies, or more commonly, of related encrusting organisms (red algae and foraminifers), thus forming surface crusts. Slope microbialites generally form the ultimate stage of a biological succession indicating a deepening sequence, whereby shallow water corals and associated encrusting organisms are replaced by deeper water assemblages of red algae and foraminifers before microbialite growth. The precipitation of phosphatic-iron-manganese crusts and the deposition of planktonic micritic limestones on the microbialites characterize a deepening-upward sequence. The widespread development of microbialites in reef sequences from the Last Deglaciation characterizes a period of environmental degradation consequential oil the rapid sea-level rise and abrupt climatic changes of that time. The reported biological succession reflects changes in water quality, and especially an increase in nutrients. In shallow-water settings, increased alkalinity and nutrient availability in interstitial waters were related to surface fluxes and terrestrial groundwater seepage while slope environments were exposed to continuous upwelling of nutrient-rich deeper waters during the last deglacial sea level rise. The age differences between corals and overlying slope microbialites range from 1600 to 8400 years, based on high-precision U-series age measurements of both corals and microbialites, and indicates that a significant time (several thousand years) elapsed between the development of the coralgal frameworks and the growth of slope microbialite crusts. Microbialites cannot be considered as part of the drowning event some 14,000 years ago that resulted in the demise of reef frameworks in the 90-110 m present depth range, but are Substantially younger. Since the 1930s, Bali has been generally seen as a traditional tourism destination quite fashionable. Nowadays, a new kind of tourism, rather esoteric if not totally spiritual, is emerging on this small “paradise” often referred as a natural untouched and cultural preserved island. To attire more international tourists, the “Island of Gods”, as the tourism promoters still name this tropical holiday paradise, is now also targeting on the industry of “well-being”. This article deals about the specificity of the local tourism activity which is based on a strong cultural identity and a rich natural and also religious heritage. Uncontrolled development of this predatory industry brings also a lot of new problems, such as pollution or acculturation. Here, our aim is to focus and analyse the real and false ties between heritage, development and tourism, always by keeping in mind that the regional motto about tourism policy still is to encourage “cultural tourism” as a real model (a “brand”, in fact) of success. We especially try to explain, in this current work (still in progress), the touristic situation in the main cultural site located on the island: Ubud. This small city, really boosting during the last decade, is worldwide reputed for the rich cultural performances and seen as “the” artistic capital of Bali. Ubud offers also a perfect example of an intense and dynamic bond between cultural heritage and economic development. Often for the best and sometimes also for the worse. In this rural but international spot, it seems that tourism business allows the local population to live in better ways and, sometimes, even to reborn, culturally speaking! Our case study shows also the big threats behind the current tourism policy: the large scale business occurred by globalization and all the tourism opportunities thus provided cannot hide the real weakness that for sure also concern the balinese way of thinking and living. Cultural tourism could rapidly be transformed in a dangerous kind of tourism of the culture, with all the big (and bad) changes the Balinese don’t want to see happening on their lovely and holy island. So, the present reflection conducts us to think more deeply on some new and alternative ways of developing tourism in Bali. Finally, our aim is to think, first by listening to the desire of the Balinese themselves, in which best manner this “last paradise” will not become a “lost paradise”. ––––– In the nowadays context of "globalization", climatic variation and great anthropization of the biosphere, the Lesser Antilles appear as a marginal world. In a political point of view, those islands offer a greatly distinct and fractured image. The same fact can also be observed in an economic, linguistic and, in a certain measure, cultural perspective. Despite of such a statement, those territories of the Caribbean basin keep economic and landscape resources whom survival depends on the re-establishment of the great ecologic structures implying a productive articulation between the natural, the urban and the agricultural. It seems pertinent to imagine a development on the level of the archipelago based upon complementarity since each constituent presents a limited number of earth and marine biologic reserves which do not guarantee an autosubsistance in energy and first nessecity productivity. A lasting development of the Lesser Antilles supposes a necessary and commun administrative, scientific, technical and agricultural management within the setting of a Caribbean functionally unified. Facing the biocenotic unity, a useful strategy, based on a similar and diversified organization in the exploitation of biophisic resources, must be erected. Such statements could be considered as utopic, regarding the situation of politic and economic division in the Caribbean nowadays. However, in the future, the survival of those insular societies will imply a lasting development lying upon an efficient relationship between Man and environment. https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054 Droits : info:eu-repo/semantics/OpenAccess halshs-00003054 https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054 https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054/document https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054/file/Devpt-durable_JOSEPH-PHILIPPE.pdf | Partager |
High-resolution vegetation history of West Africa during the last 145 ka Auteur(s) : Dalibard, Mathieu Popescu, Speranta-maria Maley, Jean Baudin, Francois Melinte-dobrinescu, Mihaela-carmen Pittet, Bernard Marsset, Tania Dennielou, Bernard Éditeur(s) : Elsevier France-editions Scientifiques Medicales Elsevier Résumé : The essential characteristics of the vegetation dynamics of tropical Africa remain only partially known. This study assesses the succession of vegetation-types over Central Africa during the last two glacial/interglacial cycles. Analysis of core KZai 02, which contains pollen from the Zaire River watershed (latitudes 9°N-13°S), allows the investigation of long-term patterns of plant ecosystem development and their climatic causes. Core KZai 02 (18.20 m long) was recovered from 6°24.20′S/9°54.10′E in the uppermost axial edifice of the Zaire deep sea fan. The chronology of this sedimentary archive was established using nannofossils and correlations of pollen and total organic carbon signals with the nearby core GeoB1008. The pollen record indicates that: (i) glacials (MIS 6, 4, 2) are marked by the development of afromontane (Podocarpus) forest at high altitudes when central basin lowlands were occupied by Cyperaceae marshes and savannah; (ii) during interglacials (MIS 1, 5) lowland forests were developed, marked by the successive expansion of pioneer, warm-temperate, rain forests, and mangrove indicating sea-level rise; (iii) glacial-interglacial transitions (MIS 6/5, 2/1) display similar vegetation dynamics. The strong evidence of afromontane forest and the opening of the vegetation during glacials suggest a reduced latitudinal distribution of rainfall by the strengthening of the trade wind system. West African monsoon systems were enhanced during interglacials, allowing the progressive development of lowland forests. The development of rain and pioneer forests during glacial Heinrich stadials suggests an enhancement of water availability in tropical Africa associated with these high latitude events. However, no augmentation of wind activity, described by previous studies, is evidenced by our pollen record. Similar vegetation successions during glacial/interglacial transitions suggest the diachronous and stepped intervention of CO2 (emphasizing the influence of temperature on plant ecosystems) and water availability. Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries, using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis Auteur(s) : Fuchs, Jacques Martin, Jean-louis M. Populus, Jacques Résumé : After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance.
The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis )) was initiated in 1994, with the aim to study the sustainability of marine shrimp aquaculture in tropical areas, main! y Indonesia and Vietnam, through the following tasks: (i) improve site selection and study the impact of aquaculture on marine environments presenting a variable sensitivity to organic sewage, (ii) analyse the socio-economical aspects and profitability of the aquaculture industry and of common resources (iii) use remote sensing and geographical data bases for diagnosis and monitoring of site degradation (iv) reinforce the capacity of Asian
scientists through training.
Severa! aquaculture sites have been investigated in the Lampung region (South Sumatra, Indonesia), the Mekong delta (Vietnam) and on the West coast of New-Caledonia, providing a large range of typical ecosystems encountered in Asia and in the Pacifie, from coralline sites to coastal plains with mangrove and deltaic areas. The study concerned the spatial structure and seasonal influence of these ecosystems, the temporal variation during the course of the project (3 years) and the relation between the ecological structure and farm productions.
Remote sensing provides a synoptic vision over large land expanses. Severa! scenes were processed for landuse mapping using conventional classification techniques. Concerning water quality assessment, a general relation for the Java sea was found between image and field data in terms of total suspended matter. Applying this relation to a new site in Sumatra has provided an initial approach to water type and, together with land use mapping, a preliminary assessment of the suitability of the area to shrimp aquaculture development.
Socio-economic research has been focused on the identification ofneeds for collective action, including public policy, in the perspective of shrimp farming sustainability. The main concern is in the regulation of shrimp farming intensification and extensification at the scale of coastal ecosystemic entities in a common property resource management perspective. The common considered here is coastal water quality. Comparing the local development profiles and the institutional grounds for the design and implementation of collective management rules shows that variables such as land tenure system, farm owner socio-economic profile, social homogeneity or heterogeneity of the farmers are key factors to analyse the potential for sustainability. The defmition of
water quality and the possible means to ensure its collective management are discussed. The main conclusion is that the economie incentives to farming development are strong but there is no significant difference among traditional, semi-intensive and intensive systems in terms of economie efficiency or wealth distribution.
The description of the functioning of the different kinds of ecosystems make it possible to give an advice concerning the positioning of the activity inside the ecosystem, and furthermore to have a reference state in order to determine the impact of the activity on the coastal environnement. This impact can be summarized as an increase in the concentration of total suspended matt€?r, of particulate organic matter and of sulfate reducing bacterias. This organic ma~.er is either issued from rearing activities or from telluric origine, due to mangrove eradication when building the ponds.
An evaluation of the relationship existing between productivity and characteristics of each ecosystem bas been conducted by correlating ecological indicators data (concentration of total suspended matter, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, percentage of pheopigments in total pigments and cyanobacteria and sulfatereducing bacteria in water and sediments) with the average production of the farms. This comparison lead to the compilation of a scale of observed production integrating the range of these environmental parameters with shrimp production levels, bound to facilitate the positioning of shrimp farming in relation with the confmement leve! of each ecosystem.
Lastly, ali geographie data originated from the various compartments of the study have been geo-referenced and loaded into a geographical information system. This allows to display any query made on spatial variables and their related statistical data, including the ir variations over the last few years and to reveal patterns and phenomena otherwise not obvious. The recognition of these limits is overdue, and signals a need to define another model for tourism development. The popular coastal sector in the south of Martinique has been subject new regulations to protect marine resources. These regulations require the development of new practices and a greater level of awareness for tourists, for example, around coral reefs and mangroves. Ecotourism programs aim to demonstrate to visitors the forests rich natural resources and biodiversity in general. It also features the inclusion of small rural businesses that benefit from additional sources of revenue as a result of ecotourism. The situation in the French Antilles is complex: Urbanization is fraught with serious consequences for the coastline. Tourism products currently being marketed on the island are not competitive (particularly against the political dynamics of the neighbouring island of Dominica). Ecotourism and sustainable tourism are just beginning to develop in such destinations, where tourism has been declining in the last ten years. The situation of the French Antilles is paradoxical in a region that generally has a very favourable tourism. Assessing these limits through the scope of ecotourism helps to highlight the causes of these difficulties and to adapting to new tourism practices. This paper describes the fishing activity in Martinique, French West Indies. It draws up the balance sheet of acquirements about marine resources of the island. The difficulties of fisheries management are discussed with reference to biologists and economists works in the last ten years. We also show how management efforts to decrease fishing pressure on reef resources has induced the implantation of a new technology: the Fish Aggregating Deviee. The differing histories of development of FADs in the French West Indies are compared. The positive results from the introduction of the FADs and the estimated risks due to the transferance of fishing pressure on the continental shelf is presented.
National diploma vs local employability : a french paradox at work in Guadeloupe. Auteur(s) : ODACRE, Elisabeth Delcroix, Antoine Auteurs secondaires : Centre de recherches et de ressources en éducation et formation (CRREF) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) The Caribbean Academy of Sciences Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience The French education system remains highly centralized and only allows limited local adaptations for overseas territories. For example, if some laws (the last in 2013) allow the use of regional languages (e.g. Creole in the French West Indies) when they constitute a relevant contribution to the teaching, many official texts remain mainly based on the geographical, economical, historical, environment of the French mainland. We focus on some French BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur / Advanced Technician Certificate), namely tourism and assistant manager, which are two important diplomas for the local development and in which microeconomic and management sciences plays a great part. The French BTS is a professional diploma prepared in two years after the “baccalauréat”, with national programs and evaluation criteria. The successful candidates are supposed to be immediately employable, especially in their local geographical environment. Thus, there exists a paradox between the national definition of the diploma and the local contexts of teaching. We discuss how teachers concretely deal with this situation on a day-to-day basis. Our hypothesis is that they act pragmatically, using their practical pedagogical content knowledge, without theoretical support for their action. In order to verify this hypothesis, we have conducted semi-structured interview with Guadeloupian teachers of the two aforementioned BTS. The main results shows that teachers adapt the national framework of the diploma, essentially by using local examples. This can be called a weak contextualization of the national texts. Indeed, these adaptations remain limited by fear of disadvantaging the students for the national exam. In addition, many context effects are shown, for example linked with local rules (concerning VAT, custom duties...) which are only partially taken into account by teachers. This demonstrates that the French educative system has not yet completely solved the opposition between national guideline and decentralization of the educational action. 19th General Meeting and Biennial Conference “Harnessing Science and Technology to create knowledge-base Economies and preserve Caribbean Ecosystems” Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago hal-01535045 https://hal.univ-antilles.fr/hal-01535045 | Partager |

The Beni Bousera peridotites occur as thin sheets within high grade crustal units of the lower Sebtides (inner Rif, Morocco) and are composed of weakly deformed spinel lherzolite in the core of the massif and garnet-spinel mylonite at the rim. The main foliation trajectories in both the peridotites and overlying crustal units show systematic rotation towards their mutual contact, indicating a kilometer-scale top to the NW shearing with a dextral component along this crust/mantle contact. Widespread top to the NW shear criteria within the crustal units overlying the peridotite support this feature. Available ages constrain the development of the main foliation in both the peridotites and crustal rocks between 25 and 20 Ma. New P-T data from the peridotites show that deformation occurs during decompression from approximate to 22 kbar, 1050 degrees C to approximate to 9-15 kbar, 800 degrees C. As a consequence, exhumation of the Beni Bousera peridotites takes place during the Oligo-Miocene lithosphere thinning in the footwall of a lithospheric extensional shear zone. The exceptional preservation of garnet within the mylonitic peridotites results from rapid cooling of the border of the massif due to the juxtaposition with colder crustal rocks along this shear zone. Uplifting of the hot mantle rocks simultaneously induces high temperature metamorphism in the overlying crustal units. These new findings allow us to reconstruct the deformation history of the Beni Bousera region and the Alboran domain in the framework of the western Mediterranean geodynamics during the last 40 Myrs.. During the Mid- to Late Holocene transition, between 8 and 3 ka, a succession of five wet/dry oscillations is recorded. An intense arid event occurs between 5.7 and 4.6 ka. This episode marks the onset of a long-term aridification trend with a progressive retreat of Mediterranean woody xerophytic vegetation and of grass steppes. It ends with the establishment of pre-desert ecosystems around 3 ka. The millennial-scale climate change recorded in the data from Sebkha Boujmel is consistent with records from the south and east Mediterranean, as well as with climatic records from the desert region for the end of the African Humid Period (AHP). Eight centennial climatic events are recorded at Sebkha Boujmel and these are contemporary with those recorded in the Mediterranean and in the Sahara. They indicate a clear coupling between the southern Mediterranean and the Sahara before 3 ka. The event at 4.2 ka is not evidenced and the link between events recorded in Sebkha Boujmel and the North Atlantic Cooling events is clearer from 3 ka onwards. These variations indicate the importance of climatic determinism in the structuring of landscapes, with the establishment of the arid climatic conditions of the Late Holocene. It is only from 3 ka onwards that the dynamic of plant associations is modified by both human activity and climatic variability. The climatic episodes identified during the historic period indicate strong regionalisation related to the differential impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Mediterranean Oscillation (MO) on the Mediterranean basin. The local human impact on regional ecosystems is recorded in the form of episodes of intensification of pastoral and/or agricultural activities. The development of olive production and of several taxa associated with agriculture attest to increasing sedentism among human populations during Classical Antiquity. The significant increase in Artemisia (wormwood) between 1.1 and 0.8 ka (850–1150 AD) is linked to intensive pastoral activity, associated with heightened interannual and/or seasonal climatic instability. A complete re-shaping of the landscape is recorded during the 20th century. The remarkable expansion of the olive tree, and the deterioration of regional ecosystems with the spread of desert species, is linked to recent local socio-economic changes in Tunisia. Nature and disability on the Reunion Island : the challenge of universal accessibility ; Nature et handicap à la Réunion : le défi d'une accessibilité pour tous Auteur(s) : Guénat, Arthur Auteurs secondaires : Espace pour le Développement (UMR ESPACE-DEV) ; Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université de la Réunion - Université de Montpellier (UM) Université de la Réunion Gilles Lajoie Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : This thesis falls within the scope of social and human geography and more exactly of« disability studies ». Understanding the disability like a « social object », the thesis analyzes the societal consideration of disabled people in non-urbanized areas with a high issue of touristic, recreational and patrimonial development. In the first place, it's the recent construction of disability as a social object that is discussed by reminding the history of the societal consideration of the disabled person in our occidental world. The French model and his fundamental rule of global accessibility for ail the domains of the social life are explained and the « Nature and Disability » thematic is more precisely analyzed as a development of an active living ideal for people who are in a disability situation. Secondly, the thesis develops this thematic on the particular field of the Reunion Island and tries to answer to a question which is both simple and complicated: « Today, how we live with a disability on the Reunion Island? ». ln a last time and on the basis of this study of the disability inside a Reunion Island society with accelerated transformations, the thesis specifies the current tendencies with the emergence of new public policies for the welcome of disabled people on natural and touristic areas of the island. To conclude and referring to an original survey, the thesis suggests some tools of evaluation and decision-making aids to these areas.
This study, based on the interpretation and integration of seismic profiles, exploration wells and outcrop studies, focus on the deep part of the Gulf of Mexico, where bathymetry varies from 200 to 3750 m, thus comprising both the continental slope and the abyssal plain. The first part of this thesis focus on the description of the sedimentary infill of the western part of the Gulf of Mexico, in the Veracruz State, and to its geodynamic controls. The geodynamic evolution of the Deep Basin of the Gulf of Mexico (DBGM) begins during the Triassic-Jurassic with the break-up and the opening of a continental rift, in the southern part of the North American lithospheric plate. This opening induced a relative movement of the Yucatan Block towards the southeast. This intra-continental rifting episode was followed by a stage of post-rift thermal subsidence in the basins of the continental margin in the west, coeval with oceanic accretion in the DBGM. The thermal subsidence of the margin was subsequently modified by the Laramian orogeny, which impacted strongly the overall architecture of the margin as well as its litho-stratigraphic evolution, inducing the deposition of siliciclastic deposits in various morphotectonic provinces: i.e., near the tectonic front of the Sierra Madre Oriental (SMO), within the adjacent Chicontepec foreland basin, over the Tuxpan Platform (Golden Lane), across the continental slope and up to the deep abyssal plain, these two last morphotectonic provinces belonging to the DBGM. During the Early Paleogene, the effects of the thermal subsidence of the passive margin were stressed by the tectonic load of the Laramian orogen (i.e., the Sierra Madre Oriental, SMO), thus allowing the development of a foreland basin flexural. In this geodynamic framework, the main sedimentary transfers developed from the tectonic front "SMO" in the west, towards the DBGM in the east, the main source for clastic sediments being linked to the erosion of the "SMO" mountains. During the Paleocene and the Early Eocene, the architecture of the silici-clastic syn-tectonic sediments deposited in submarine fans was characterized by sliding, turbidites with A and B Bouma facies, as well as levees and channels. After the stop of the flexural subsidence, the thermal subsidence of the passive margin resumed during the Late Eocene, the Oligocene and the Neogene, allowing the development of a new sedimentary prism, prograding eastwards toward the DBGM. This sedimentary infill was again made up of levees-channels, sand bars and delta systems. During the Neogene, an extensional system with listric faults and roll-over features developed across the slope of the DBGM, due to an active detachment developing within overpressured Eocene-Oligocene clays. This gravitational gliding of Neogene series accounted also for the development of compressional features at the toe of the slope. Approximately 60% of the Miocene siliciclastic sediments have been trapped in growth strata and slope basins associated with this complex gravitational system, ranging from river-delta features towards gravity slides associated with slump facies. The second part of this thesis aims at a quantification of these various processes, including the construction of balanced cross sections, forward Thrustpack kinematic modelling coupling the development of a basal detachment, lithospheric flexure, erosion and sedimentation, as well as subsequent stratigraphic modelling with the Dionisos software, the later aiming at predicting the sand versus clay ratios in Neogene siliciclastic deposits of the DBGM and its surroundings.
Diffusion, deformation and mineral properties of the Earth's interior. Introduction Auteur(s) : MAINPRICE, David Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Elsevier Résumé : International audience This special issue in honour of the late Olivier Jaoul brings together contributions from experimental and theoretical mineralogy, the area of most of Olivier's own work, focused for the most part on the Earth's mantle. The volume is divided into three sections; diffusion, deformation and seismic properties. New technological developments have often had a strong impact on research in this area, as again shown by Olivier's constant search to improve the resolution of the short diffusion profiles typical of major cations in mantle silicates. In the section on diffusion the impact of improved computer performance for modelling diffusion and point defect configurations on one hand, and high pressure experimental techniques on the other hand, highlight the continued development in this area. The section on deformation deals with wide range of subjects, including the deformation of olivine and quartz and the relation between deformation and diffusion, both subjects close to Olivier's personal interests. This illustrates the new possibilities to undertake deformation experiments at mantle pressures and temperatures, as well as improvement in high-fidelity viscoelastic measurements at high temperature. In the last section on seismic properties we discover theoretical developments on predicting properties near the Earth's surface and a new experimental application, which allows the determination of sound velocity at very high pressures with implications for the Earth's inner core. The discursive and political use of sustainable development in the Caribbean. ; La mise en discours et en politique du développement durable dans l’espace caraïbe Auteur(s) : Daniel, Justin Auteurs secondaires : LC2S - Laboratoire Caribéen de Sciences Sociales ; Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université des Antilles (Pôle Martinique) ; Université des Antilles (UA) - Université des Antilles (UA) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD EDP Sciences Résumé : International audience This paper reports the first outcomes of a research program “Environment and Sustainable Development in the Caribbean space” co-funded by the European Union, the Région Martinique and the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane under the European Union operational programme 2007-2013. Since the middle of the last century, the Caribbean countries, regardless of their great diversity and political fragmentation, are faced with the recurring problem of development. Having explored different paths, they are looking now for new development models. This challenge which becomes obsessive over the decades, is now a major concern: indeed, the Caribbean territories are per se vulnerable and highly exposed to natural risks due to climate change. In addition, this relates to areas where tensions between exploitation and conservation of a rich biodiversity are particularly strong. Based on the promotion of tourism and services as part of an “open regionalism” at the intersection of global and local scales of public action, the current development strategies give rise to a dual approach with, however, rather mixed results: on the one hand, a discursive use of sustainable development, apprehended through its environmental dimension, evidences a new way of looking at the region and a change in the way the region sees itself; on the other hand, a political use of sustainable development through cross-cutting policies, is hindered by the complexity of structures, the multiple levels of action and regulation, and the difficult appropriation of public-policy organization by local communities and people.
