Résumé : The three main sources of organic matter in oceanic basins are marine plankton, terrestrial higher plants and undifferentiated residual organic matter which has been highly degraded in subaerial environments. The time and areal distribution of marine organic matter is mainly controlled by the conditions of preservation. In deep oceans accumulation occurs mainly in confined anoxic basins, and also in open ocean, where local conditions generate a surplus of supply over bacterial degradation. Moderately degraded terrestrial organic matter is derived from land plants and carried away by rivers and currents. It is mainly deposited in sediments of the river fans. Residual organic matter has been highly degraded in subaerial conditions prior to transportation, and may consist of contemporaneous and/or recycled material. It cannot be degraded any more and may be spread over wide areas, regardless of the local environments.

The record of the continental lithosphere is patchy and incomplete; no known rock is older than 4.02 Ga, and less than 5% of the rocks preserved are older than 3 Ga. In addition, there is no recognizable mantle lithosphere from before 3 Ga. We infer that there was lithosphere before 3 Ga and that ∼3 Ga marks the stabilization of blocks of continental lithosphere that have since survived. This was linked to plate tectonics emerging as the dominant tectonic regime in response to thermal cooling, the development of a more rigid lithosphere, and the recycling of water, which may in turn have facilitated plate tectonics. A number of models, using different approaches, suggest that at 3 Ga the volume of continental crust was ∼70% of its present-day volume and that this may be a minimum value. The continental crust before 3 Ga was on average more mafic than that generated subsequently, and this pre-3 Ga mafic new crust had fractionated Lu/Hf and Sm/Nd ratios as inferred for the sources of tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite and later granites. The more intermediate composition of new crust generated since 3 Ga is indicated by its higher Rb/Sr ratios. This change in composition was associated with an increase in crustal thickness, which resulted in more emergent crust available for weathering and erosion. This in turn led to an increase in the Sr isotope ratios of seawater and in the drawdown of CO2. Since 3 Ga, the preserved record of the continental crust is marked by global cycles of peaks and troughs of U-Pb crystallization ages, with the peaks of ages appearing to match periods of supercontinent assembly. There is increasing evidence that the peaks of ages represent enhanced preservation of magmatic rocks in periods leading up to and including continental collision in the assembly of supercontinents. These are times of increased crustal growth because more of the crust that is generated is retained within the crust. The rates of generation of continental crust and mantle lithosphere may have remained relatively constant at least since 3 Ga, yet the rates of destruction of continental crust have changed with time. Only relatively small volumes of rock are preserved from before 3 Ga, and so it remains difficult to establish which of these are representative of global processes and the extent to which the rock record before 3 Ga is distorted by particular biases.

Résumé : On October 10, 1899, Cuban immigrants formed a recreational society known as El Club Nacional Cubano. Three years later, the society of three hundred members changed its name to El Círculo Cubano. According to the 1902 charter, the Círculo Cubano was formed "for the mutual benefit and enjoyment of its members and for the charitable purposes and instruction of its members and the dissemination of knowledge among all classes of people." In order to preserve harmony among its diverse membership, the statutes of the club expressly prohibited any discussion within the society of labor, politics, or religion. In 1917, the Cuban Club opened the doors of its neoclassic clubhouse at 2010 Avenida República de Cuba in Ybor City.

Maima-Seville Heritage Park, owned and operated by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, is made up of three distinct areas: the original Spanish settlement - Sevilla La Nueva, a British sugar plantation, and forested regions. The following preserved structures can be found at the site: the Governor’s castle, a Spanish sugar mill, an artisan workshop, and the remains of a Spanish settlement, a Spanish church, and a British great house. Christopher Columbus spent over a year marooned here after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. Slide labeled Jam. where Col. landed - Seville.

Résumé : During the years 1972-1993, kepone a persistent pesticide has been used in the banana fields of the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) to content a weevil. A slow desorption of the molecule from soil induces its transfer to the sea through the rivers from leaching and erosion. This study intended to take stock on the contamination by kepone of the fishery species around the islands fifteen years after the kepone ban. Furthermore other chemical pollutants were sought in fish and shellfish around the Martinique island. The results confirmed persistence of marine fauna contamination by kepone, mainly in the alluvium areas in front of polluted rivers. They shown also that this contamination may spread more widely but with fast decreasing through the marine food webs. For the other pollutants sought, the results were in general lower than the statutory values. Within these substances, only mercury gave a signal close to the prescribed threshold for top predator samples. Finally, on the whole the observed systems appeared preserved from human chemical pollutants, apart from kepone.
Pendant les années 1972-1993 un pesticide persistant, la chlordécone, a été utilisé dans les bananeraies des Antilles françaises (Martinique et Guadeloupe) pour lutter contre un charançon. Une désorption lente de la molécule fixée dans les sols conduit à son transfert progressif dans les milieux aquatiques puis vers le domaine marin au gré du lessivage et de l'érosion des sols contaminés. La présente étude visait à faire le point sur la contamination de la faune halieutique côtière des Antilles françaises quinze ans après l'interdiction d'usage de la molécule. En parallèle, une recherche systématique d'autres polluants chimiques a été effectuée sur des poissons et des crustacés ainsi que dans des sédiments autour de la Martinique. Les résultats confirment la persistance d'une contamination de la faune par la chlordécone, particulièrement dans les zones alluvionnaires des cours d'eau contaminés. Ils montrent également que cette contamination diffuse plus largement en s'atténuant, à travers les réseaux trophiques marins. Parmi les autres substances recherchées, les résultats dans les espèces d'intérêt halieutique se situent en général sous les concentrations maximales admissibles fixées par la réglementation. Parmi ces molécules, seul le mercure donne un signal de contamination proche de ce seuil chez des grands prédateurs. Ce constat souligne l'état de préservation des milieux observés vis-à-vis de la contamination chimique environnementale, hormis bien évidemment le cas de la chlordécone.
