- d'une part par la création d'un grand centre original à Brest combinant systématiquement les recherches pluridisciplinaires exploratoires et appliquées, les activités de mise au point des techniques et technologies associées à ces recherches et la mise en place de grands services nationaux tels que Bureau National des Données Océaniques, service de traitement informatique spécialisé de grande puissance, lithotéque manne ou encore bassin d'essai de grandes dimensions;
- d'autre part, par un développement (lancement des NI0 Noroit, Suroit, Nadir sur décisions prises au cours de la décennie) et par une modernisation spectaculaire de la flotte océanographique et de ses moyens d'intervention (sondeur multifaisceaux Sea-Beam par exemple);

Guam Fish Aggregating Device programme Auteur(s) : Torres, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Installation and maintenance of FADs by the Government of Guam began in 1979, initially with funding from the Salstonstall-Kennedy Act through the Pacific Tuna Development Foundation. Current funding for the Guam FAD project is provided through the Dingell-Johnson/Wallop-Breaux Sport Fish Restoration programme, a Federal Aid Project funded by taxes collected on the purchase of fishing equipment and motorboat fuels nationwide. There are now sixteen operational FAD sites in Guam's waters. At a cost of approximately US$10,000 per system, concern for the rising costs of replacing and maintaining FAD systems has prompted the Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) to investigate alternative FAD maintenance strategies and system design. Several cost-cutting measures being considered include the use of reliable solar-powered navigation lights to reduce the number of maintenance trips required, and switching to a newer generation of lighter, more durable buoys and mooring systems. Average time on station for a dawr fad system is nearing two years. Interestingly, in most cases where an errant system is recovered, the failure in the mooring system was observed to occur at a depth from 35 to 500 metres. These observations have led to speculation that additional protection of the mooring line down to 500 m may result in doubling the average time on station of most FAD systems. Remplacement total des artémia par des microparticules inertes dans l'élevage larvaire de l'ombrine Sciaenops ocellatus en Martinique Auteur(s) : Petton, Bruno Falguiere, Jean-claude Éditeur(s) : Proceedings of the 59th Annual Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute Résumé : In most of marine fishes cultured, larvae in their early development are fed with live prey (rotifer and/or artemia). In hatcheries, culture of these preys is labour consuming, needs specific facilities and represent an important part of production cast. On the other hand, world artemia production is subjected to fluctuation of harvest in the wild which could Iimit fish farming industry in the near future. A dried formula adapted to marine fish larvae has been perfected by Ifremer's center of Brest (France) and is distributed by a feeding company since 1999. This artificial microbound diet has been successfully tested on several temperate fishes such as European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) or European seabream (Sparus aurata) in a co-feeding (i.e. artemia and dried diet) strategy. Experiments described here were carried out ta evaluate the performances obtained during total substitution of artemia by this diet in Red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) larval culture. ln 2004 and 2005, four experiments were conducted on feed technology aspects (experimental or industrial manufacturing), weaning strategy (direct or co-feeding) and feed distribution method (prototypes or classical self feeder) in comparison to the standardized method using live preys. At the end of larval phase (day 15) and at day 30, end of nursery phase (0.6 g), survival relative to control (RTC) was respectively 96.9% and 111.0% in the best treatment. Concerning growth, the weight RTC reached at day 15 and day 30 was respectively 82.8% and 72.4%. However, it is important to note that rearing protocols have to be adapted ta the use of these micro pellets in order toprevent degradation of culture quality. These results show that this new product can be applied on industrial scale in private hatcheries. But further research is needed ta evaluate replacement of rotifers by this dried formula in order to completely eliminate live prey in larval culture of Red drum. Démarche d'amélioration des DCP à la Martinique Auteur(s) : Guillou, Annie Lagin, Alain-sabin Lebeau, Alain Priour, Daniel Repecaud, Michel Reynal, Lionel Sacchi, Jacques Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 15-19 octobre 1999 Résumé : Since 1983, the research on the optimal conception of FADs in Martinique was particularly focused on the improvement of their resistance to different maritime or human aggressions. Following several experimentations made with different types of fads, the choice was brought on light devices anchored in 1 500 to 2 000 m depths and an experimental approach was conducted to identify the causes of loss of fads and to attempt to modelize their hydrodynamic behaviour with relation to the sea conditions. Three mathematical models are used to simulate the fad behaviour under current action and swell, and to estimate the forces exerted on each part of the device. The results of this study are presented. The fad design used nowadays for the development of pelagic fishing in Martinique, recommendations for maintenance and preservation of the fads are also proposed. Partial characterization of an exopolysaccharide secreted by a marine bacterium, Vibrio neocaledonicus sp nov., from New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Chalkiadakis, Eletherios Dufourcq, R. Schmitt, Sophie Brandily, Christophe Kervarec, N. Coatanea, Denis Amir, H. Loubersac, Lionel Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Résumé : Aims Exopolysaccharides (EPS) are industrially valuable molecules with numerous useful properties. This study describes the techniques used for the identification of a novel Vibrio bacterium and preliminary characterization of its EPS. Methods and Results Bioprospection in marine intertidal areas of New Caledonia followed by screening for EPS producing brought to selection of the isolate NC470. Phylogenetic analysis (biochemical tests, gene sequencing and DNADNA relatedness) permitted to identify NC470 as a new member of the Vibrio genus. The EPS was produced in batch fermentation, purified using the ultrafiltration process and analysed by colorimetry, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and HPLC-size exclusion chromatography. This EPS exhibits a high N-acetyl-hexosamines and uronic acid content with a low amount of neutral sugar. The molecular mass was 672x103Da. These data are relevant for possible technological exploitation. Conclusions We propose the name Vibrio neocaledonicus sp. nov for this isolate NC470, producing an EPS with an unusual sugar composition. Comparison with other known polymers permitted to select applications for this polymer. Significance and Impact of the Study This study contributes to evaluate the marine biodiversity of New Caledonia. It also highlights the biotechnological potential of New Caledonia marine bacteria. Underwater video techniques for observing coastal marine biodiversity: A review of sixty years of publications (1952–2012) Auteur(s) : Mallet, Delphine Pelletier, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Underwater video techniques are increasingly used in marine ecology studies. Technological progress regarding video cameras, sensors (such as sounders), battery life and information storage make these techniques now accessible to a majority of users. However, diver-based underwater visual censuses, and catch and effort data, remain the most commonly used for observing coastal biodiversity and species. In this paper, we review the underwater video techniques that have been developed since the 1950s to investigate and/or monitor coastal biodiversity. Techniques such as remote underwater video, whether baited or not, diver-operated video and towed video are described, along with corresponding applications in the field. We then analyse the complementary of techniques, first from studies comparing video techniques with other observation techniques, whether video-based or not, and second by documenting their respective cost efficiencies. These findings are discussed with respect to current challenges in monitoring and investigating coastal biodiversity. Video should be more often considered and used, either in addition to or as an alternative to diver-based, fishing and acoustic techniques, as it may be particularly suited for monitoring coastal biodiversity in a variety of areas and on larger scales than hitherto and within an ecosystem-based approach to management and conservation. Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1991 Résumé : On the bathyal slope for continental margins, steep and rocky substrates punctuated with cliffs and collapsing zones are frequently found. As survey and sampling with the classical technics from the sea surface is practically impossible in such an environment, in situ exploration with a submersible allows significant advances in ecology, with implications in paleoenvironment reconstruction. Mixing of material from shallow-water and deep-sea origins into bathyal sedimentation suggests that the so-called "fossil assemblages of outer platform" were frequently misinterpreted. Dense populations of animals closely related to fossil groups which were only considered as relict of the Past ("living fossils") and previously interpreted as shallow-water inhabitants during geological times can be discovered living in such bathyal communities. The role of bathyal ecological niches during global bioevents brings a new vision of the history of life in the Ocean through geological time and has to be further investigated. Examples from cruises monitoring the diving saucer Cyana (SP 3000) in the Bay of Biscay and off New Caledonia are given. The use of acoustical systems in various human activities in the ocean (industry, defence, science) raises the issue of their impact upon marine mammals populations. Several serious accidents linked to the use of naval sonars led the military, industrial and scientific communities to investigate the potential dangers of their own activity.
This report aims at identifying the risks for the cetaceans linked to the use of acoustic and seismic systems currently used for oceanographic science. The analysis proposed here stays within the frame of bibliography synthesis and elementary modelling, and brings no new scientific elements on the topic.
An overview of the status of cetacean populations is given first, with a summary of the possible acoustical threats. Risks are classified and described, insisting on the cases of massive stranding events. The present status of knowledge about auditory characteristics of cetaceans is summarised, and the definition of an objective threshold for acoustical risk is discussed ; the usually-admitted values are finally retained, despite of their evident limitations.
The report presents also the emission characteristics of the various acoustic and seismic systems used in oceanographic, emphasising the ones operated by Ifremer; for the potentially harmful ones (according to the currently-used criteria) a model is proposed for the radiated acoustical intensity field, giving the extent of risk areas. This analysis concludes to the harmlessness of most systems, excepted heavy seismics and at a lesser degree low-frequency multibeam echosounders.
Finally a variety of possible mitigation measures are presented and discussed; the regulations imposed by some countries are detailed. The report finally recommends both short-term measures aimed at limiting the potential risks, and longer-term actions for participating in the general effort of scientific and technological research in this field.
