Résumé : Batch culture experiments using viral enrichment were conducted to test the response of a coastal bacterial community to autochthonous (i.e., co-existing) or allochthonous riverine viruses. The effects of viral infections on bacterial dynamics and activity were assessed by epifluorescence microscopy and thymidine incorporation, respectively, whereas the effect of viral infection on bacterial community composition was examined by polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism 16S ribosomal RNA fingerprinting. The percentages of high nucleic acid-containing cells, evaluated by flow cytometry, were significantly correlated (r (2) = 0.91, n = 12, p < 0.0001) to bacterial production, making this value a good predictor of active cell dynamics along the study. While confinement and temperature were the two principal experimental factors affecting bacterial community composition and dynamics, respectively, additions of freshwater viruses had significant effects on coastal bacterial communities. Thus, foreign viruses significantly reduced net bacterial population increase as compared to the enrichment treated with inactivated virus. Moreover, freshwater viruses recurrently and specifically affected bacterial community composition, as compared to addition of autochthonous viruses. In most cases, the combined treatment viruses and freshwater dissolved organic matter helped to maintain or even enhance species richness in coastal bacterial communities in agreement to the 'killing the winner' hypothesis. Thus, riverine virus input could potentially influence bacterial community composition of the coastal bay albeit with modest modification of bulk bacterial growth.

Résumé : The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997-April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height approximate to 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity, fairly synchronous in both sexes, was comparable with that of other tropical bivalves: reproduction occurs continuously throughout the year with a maximal activity during the warm season (November-May). No resting period was observed. Quantitative growth data showed that P. margaritifera exhibits an annual synchronised polymodal spawning pattern, with two spawning peaks in age-group I (height approximate to 70 mm) and five in age-groups II (height approximate to 100 mm) and III (height approximate to 120 mm). Spawning was sometimes incomplete, nevertheless a clear relationship between gamete production (P-R, g) and size (height H, mm) was obtained: P-R = 5.26 x 10(-7) H-2.91 (R-2 = 0.99, p < 0.05). Estimation of P-R was used to calculate the annual reproductive effort in P. margaritifera. Reproductive effort (%) was similar to those calculated for temperate species and showed a progressive increase with the age of pearl oyster, from 7 % in age-group I to 38 % in age-group III. This study showed that, in a fairly stable tropical environment such as the Takapoto lagoon, P. margaritifera is a multiple spawner, which uses an opportunistic reproductive strategy, allowing investment all year around, of any surplus energy into gamete production. Surplus energy is ensured by the high pumping rates developed by this non-symbiotic bivalve to succeed in low seston conditions. Le cycle et l'effort de reproduction de l'huître perlière à lèvres noires, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivée dans le lagon de Takapoto, ont été étudiés sur une période annuelle (de mars 1997 à avril 1998), par un suivi bimensuel des stades de maturation et des indices gonadiques, sur une population en élevage composée de trois groupes d'âge (1, 2 et 3 ans). Cette étude a confirmé que P. margaritifera est une espèce qui se reproduit tardivement par rapport aux autres Ptériidés (elle atteint sa maturité sexuelle à la fin de sa première année, pour une hauteur approximative de 40 mm). Par ailleurs, elle présente, en élevage, une protandrie marquée (100 % de mâles à première maturité, 75 % pour des huîtres âgées de trois ans). Le schéma général de sa gamétogenèse, relativement synchrone dans les deux sexes, est comparable à celui des autres bivalves tropicaux : la reproduction est quasiment continue (aucune période de repos sexuel) avec une activité accrue en saison chaude (de novembre à mai). L'analyse des variations du poids de la gonade suggère l'existence de deux pics d'émission de gamètes chez les huîtres de un an et cinq pics chez les huîtres de 2 et 3 ans (cycle de reproduction de type polymodal). Bien que ces émissions de gamètes soient parfois incomplètes, une relation entre la production de gamètes (PR, en g) et la taille de l'huître perlière (hauteur, H, en mm) a été établie : PR = 5,26 x 10-7 H2,91 (R2 = 0,99, p < 0,05). Ces résultats ont permis de calculer l'effort de reproduction de P. margaritifera à Takapoto et sur un bilan annuel : il augmente avec l'âge de l'huître perlière de 7 % pour le groupe d'âge I à 38% pour le groupe d'âge III. Ces valeurs annuelles sont similaires à celles calculées chez les bivalves de milieux tempérés. Cette étude a donc montré que, dans un environnement tropical assez stable tel que celui du lagon de Takapoto, P. margaritifera présente une reproduction continue, avec plusieurs pics d'émission de gamètes par an. Cette stratégie « opportuniste » permet l'investissement, de tout surplus d'énergie en production de gamètes, tout au long de l'année. Malgré la faible concentration du milieu en nourriture, ces surplus d'énergie sont assurés par les fortes capacités de filtration développées par cette espèce tropicale non-symbiotique.

Résumé : A novel piezotolerant, mesophilic, facultatively anaerobic, organotrophic, polarly flagellated bacterium (strain LT13a(T)) was isolated from a deep sediment layer in the Nankai Trough (Leg 190, Ocean Drilling Program) off the coast of Japan. This organism used a wide range of organic substrates as sole carbon and energy sources: pyruvate, glutamate, succinate, fumarate, lactate, citrate, peptone and tryptone. Oxygen, nitrate, fumarate, ferric iron and cystine were used as electron acceptors. Maximal growth rates were observed at a hydrostatic pressure of 10 MPa. Hydrostatic pressure for growth was in the range 0.1-50 MPa. Predominant cellular fatty acids were 16:1 omega7c, 15: 0 iso, 16: 0 and 13: 0 iso. The G + C content of the DNA was 44.9 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain LT13a(T) was shown to belong to the gamma-Proteobacteria, being closely related to Shewanella putrefaciens (98%), Shewanella oneidensis (97%) and Shewanella baltica (96 %). Levels of DNA homology between strain LT13a(T) and S. putrefaciens, S. oneidensis and S. baltica were < 20 %, indicating that strain LT13a(T) represents a novel species. Genetic evidence and phenotypic characteristics showed that isolate LT13a(T) constitutes a novel species of the genus Shewanella, Because of the deep origin of the strain, the name Shewanella profunda sp. nov. is proposed, with LT13a(T) (= DSM 15900(T)-JCM 12080(T)) as the type strain.

Résumé : Avec un taux d’incidence cumulée de 56 cas pour 100 000 habitants, la Guadeloupe est la deuxième région de France la plus touchée par le VIH. La plupart des publications sur le VIH/Sida en Guadeloupe sont essentiellement descriptives, issues de rapports d’activité. La base hospitalière, alimentant la Base de données Hospitalière française sur l’infection à VIH, n’a été que très peu exploitée pour la recherche. L’objectif de ce travail est d’évaluer les aspects fondamentaux de la prise en charge de l’infection VIH. Ainsi le dépistage tardif, le retard à la prise en charge spécialisée, l’interruption du suivi, les infections opportunistes et les décès sont étudiés ainsi que leurs facteurs prédictifs.Dans ce travail articulé autour de six publications, nous avons mis en évidence les points suivants : tout d’abord, le diagnostic très tardif (CD4<200/mm3) concernait 40,12 % des adultes infectés par le VIH suivis en Guadeloupe. Comparé à la France métropolitaine, ce taux est encore très élevé et souligne l’importance de poursuivre les efforts de dépistage. Pour pouvoir bénéficier d’une prise en charge précoce, le patient doit être dirigé dans un centre de traitement de l’infection par le VIH sans tarder. Or, le retard dans cette prise en charge spécialisée touchait 36 % des patients. L’analyse des éléments associés à ce retard a permis d’en identifier les facteurs de risque.Pour optimiser les résultats thérapeutiques, les patients nécessitent un suivi régulier. Ainsi, le système de santé devrait avoir comme objectif, entre autres, la rétention des patients dans le circuit de soins. Or, plus de 22 % des patients de cette cohorte étaient perdus de vue et jamais revus. Les patients plus jeunes, ceux au stade B de la classification CDC et ceux non traités par TTARV étaient plus à risque d’interruption de suivi, dès la première année suivant le diagnostic de l’infection VIH.Bien que la proportion des patients suivis sous ARV soit proche de 100 %, il en existe toujours développant un Sida. La comparaison avec la Guyane et la France métropolitaine montre que les trois premières affections classantes en Guadeloupe étaient la candidose oesophagienne, le syndrome de cachexie liée au VIH et la pneumocystose. Il existait des différences notables avec la métropole, mais aussi avec la Guyane. Ce taux élevé de syndrome de cachexie liée au VIH pose question. Derrière ce diagnostic, pourraient se cacher d’autres maladies opportunistes non diagnostiquées, mais également des différences de codage. Le recul de la mortalité avec le temps a entraîné une modification qualitative des causes de décès. Celles rapportées dans la littérature étaient les mêmes que celles observées dans notre étude. Contrairement à la métropole où le cancer représentait la première cause de mortalité, en Guadeloupe, les infections liées au Sida constituaient la première cause de décès.Ce travail de thèse s’est donc efforcé de dégager, pour l’une des régions de France les plus affectées par le VIH, quelques grands indicateurs à partir de la Base Hospitalière FHDH. Cette base ne comportait pas toujours toutes les informations souhaitées, mais le nombre substantiel d’observations donnait une puissance importante aux variables étudiées. Ces résultats, bien que confirmant souvent les connaissances empiriques des cliniciens, aura pu aider à mieux appréhender l’épidémie du VIH en Guadeloupe.
With an accumulated incidence rate of 56 cases per 100 000 inhabitants, Guadeloupe is the second French region most affected by HIV. Most of the publications on HIV/AIDS were essentially descriptive, stemming from annual reports. The Guadeloupean Hospital Database on HIV was scarcely exploited for research. The objective of this work was to estimate the fundamental aspects of HIV/AIDS in Guadeloupe. So late presentation for care, delay between HIV diagnosis and first specialised consultation, follow-up interruption, incidence of depression, opportunistic infections and deaths were studied as well as their predictive factors. We were able to highlight the following points: first, the very late HIV diagnosis (CD4< 200 / mm3) concerned 40, 12 % of HIV- infected adults followed in Guadeloupe. 36 % of patients had delays between HIV diagnosis and first specialised consultation. However, more than 22 % of patients were permanently lost to follow-up and never seen again. The first three classifying affections were oesophageal candidiasis, HIV-wasting syndrome and pneumocystosis. The causes of deaths reported in the literature were similar to those observed in our study. AIDS-related infections were the first cause of deaths.This thesis work thus tried to generate, in one of the most HIV-affected French regions, some indicators from the French Hospital Database on HIV. This database often did not contain all the desired informations, but the important number of observations allowed to have high power for the studied variables. These results, although often confirming the clinicians' empirical knowledge, may help understand some aspects of the HIV epidemic in Guadeloupe.

Résumé : Les mattes de procaryotes constituent une niche écologique diversifiée. peu étudié!<..en mangrove et jamais décrjte dans les Antilles. L'objectif de cette thèse est de décrire les procaryotes filamenteux reposant sur le sédiment marin et de caractériser les interactions entre la matte, milieu et entre les différents micro-organismes. Nous avons d'abord caractérisé les micro-organismes majoritaires de la matte par le séquençage de l'ADNr 16S et des hybridations moléculaires (FISH). Il a ainsi été possible de décrire deux nouvelles espèces de Beggiatoaceae dont la structure a été étudiée par microscopie électronique. De plus, afin de caractériser l'environnement chimique de ces bactéries, des capteurs potentiométriques ont été utilisés. Ils ont permis de démontrer que les Beggiaotaceae oxydaient les sulfures en prélevant l'oxygène du milieu, tandis que des analyses de microscopie couplées à de l'EDX ont mis en évidence des réserves de soufre intracellulaires dans ces bactéries. Le séquençage de l'ADNr 16S des cyanobactéries filamenteuses a mis en évidence quatre nouvelles espèces de l'ord~e des Oscillatoriales. Deux d'entre elles, du genre Planktothricoides ont révélé une toxicité positive sur les Artemia sp:, les deux autres ont été identifiées comme proches d'Oscillatoria spongeliae, une espèce symbiotique d'éponge, bien que les coupes uItrafines d'une de ces souches aient montré une morphologie interne proche des Tychonema. L'analyse des données a permis d'étoffer les connaissances sur les communautés microbiennes de mangrove et constitue une base intéressante de travail sur la contribution des micro-organismes au fonctionnement de l'écosystème mangrove dans son ensemble
Procaryotic mats are ecological niches, occuring in many ecosystems. Those structures are little studied in marine mangrove sediment and have never been described in West Indies. The purpose ofthis thesis is to characterize the interactions between the mat and the environment, and between the different filamentous micro-organisms living into the mat. In a first place, we characterized the mainly micro-organisrns of the mat by sequencing 16S rDNA. We confirmed these sequences by molecular hybridization (FISH) with specific probes designed from sequences obtained. Thus, it was possible to describe two new Beggiatoaceae strains, whose structure has been studied by electronic microscopy. Furthemore, we used potentiometric captors in situ and in laboratory, by creating a mesocosm, in order to define the chemical environment where involved these bacteria. These experiences proved that the Beggiatoaceae of the mat oxidized the sulfur taking the oxygen from the medium, while the microscopic analysis coupled with EDX showed intracellular sulfur granules into the bacteria. The study of the filamentous cyanobacteria of the mat highlighted four new cyanobacteria strains, all studied by electronic rmcroscopy. Two of them belongs to Planktothrlcoides genus and showed positive toxicity on Artemia salina. The others species are close to Oscillatorla spongeliae, a sponge symbiont, nevertheless, one ofthem showed an intemal morphology close to Tychonema. The analysis of the different results adduces sorne knowledge about mangrove microbial communities. Furthermore, this study can be used as an interesting base to study the micro-organisms contribution in functioning mangrove ecosystem

Résumé : L’objet de cette thèse est de présenter les spécificités épidémiologiques, étiologiques et thérapeutiques de la pathologie neurovasculaire dans la population noire spécifique que constitue la population martiniquaise. En 1998, l’étude ERMANCIA I a permis de mettre en évidence une surincidence des accidents vasculaires cérébraux (AVC) en Martinique d’environ 40% par rapport à la métropole avec une haute prévalence de l’hypertension artérielle et du diabète. Ces résultats ont participé à la création en 2003 de la 1ère unité neurovasculaire aux Antilles. Le suivi à 5 ans des patients ERMANCIA I a révélé que la moitié était décédée et que 50% des survivants présentaient une démence vasculaire (soit le double des cohortes métropolitaines), probablement favorisé par une microangiopathie cérébrale sous-jacente souvent sévère amplifiant l’impact cognitif de l’AVC. Ce suivi a également permis d’identifier les faiblesses de la prévention secondaire en Martinique avec près de 80% des hypertendus qui restent mal équilibrés justifiant la création en 2006 d’un réseau de prévention. L’efficacité de ce réseau a été évaluée montrant un taux élevé de bon contrôle tensionnel (74% vs 39%, p=0,01) et une morbi-mortalité vasculaire moindre à 2,5 ans (8,3% vs 24%, p<0,001) que chez les patients contrôles. En 2012, ERMANCIA II a permis de révéler une diminution majeure (en moyenne 30%) de l’incidence des AVC dans la population martiniquaise et de la mortalité à 1 mois pour les patients ≤55 ans (20% vs 8%, p=0,03) probablement en raison d’une meilleure implémentation des mesures de prévention primaire et de la prise en charge en UNV respectivement. Nos données ont également permis de décrire certaines spécificités étiologiques des AVC chez les Martiniquais : grande fréquence de l’athérome intracrânien (pour lequel nous apportons des arguments en faveur d’une nouvelle classification), infarctus choroïdiens antérieurs dont nous décrivons le profil évolutif particulier, infarctus lacunaires multiples sévères. Deux étiologies plus « classiques » comme la drépanocytose et les IC sur morsure de serpent sont devenues anecdotiques. En revanche, une dysplasie carotidienne focale, étiologie déjà décrite mais supposée rare , pourrait être responsable d’un tiers des infarctus carotidiens d’origine indéterminée chez les Afro-Caribéens ≤55 ans exposant à un risque élevé de récidive sous traitement antiagrégant (28% à 14 mois), contre aucun pour les patients traités par endartériectomie. Sur le plan thérapeutique, nos résultats sont en faveur d’un surrisque hémorragique de la thrombolyse standard chez les patients martiniquais les plus âgés, probablement en rapport avec un cumul de lésions microangiopathiques plus important. En l’absence de neuroradiologie interventionnelle en Martinique, nos travaux montrent que certains patients avec occlusion artérielle proximale résistante à la thrombolyse IV standard peuvent bénéficier d’un complément de thrombolytique (0,1mg/Kg de tenecteplase). Une étude randomisée est prévue afin de mieux mesurer le potentiel thérapeutique de cette stratégie. Pour conclure, l’intérêt de ces données est que la population martiniquaise partage très probablement beaucoup de ses « particularités » avec d’autres populations noires encore peu décrites et pour lesquelles l’occidentalisation progressive du mode de vie risque d’accentuer le fardeau représenté par les AVC.
Our work presented herein aimed to describe the epidemiological, etiological and therapeutic features of the stroke pathology in the Martinican Afro-Caribbean population. In 1998, the first population-based epidemiological study, ERMANCIA I, showed a 40% greater firstever stroke incidence in Martinique compared to those observed in continental France, with a high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes. These results contributed to the creation, in 2003, of the first stroke unit in the Caribbean area. In the 5_year follow-up study, we found that half of the patients had died and that 50% of survivors were affected from vascular dementia (twice compared with continental French cohorts): this figure was probably favored by severe underlying cerebral microangiopathy that amplified the cognitive impact of stroke. We also identified a failure in the secondary prevention in Martinique, certified by nearly 80% of hypertensive patients still insufficiently controlled. As a result, in 2006, we developed a well-structured stroke prevention network. The efficiency of this network was attested by the high rate of good blood pressure control (74% vs. 39%, p=0.01) and the reduced vascular morbidity and mortality rate (8.3% vs. 24%, p <0.001) after a 30-month period of activity, in comparison with control “historic” patients. In 2012, ERMANCIA II study revealed a 30% reduction of first-ever stroke incidence and a reduced mortality rate at 1 month for patients ≤55 years (8% vs. 20%, p = 0.03), compared to these observed in ERMANCIA I, likely due to improvement of primary stroke prevention and the best stroke unit management at the acute phase, respectively. Based on our etiological data, we underline: 1) the relatively high frequency of symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis, for which we propose a new definition; 2) the clinic-radiological features of stroke in the anterior choroidal artery; 3) the atypical picture of “malignant” multilacunar syndrome. On the other hand, stroke due to sickle cell disease or “trigonocephale” snakebite were only anecdotal. However, we found that carotid-bulb atypical fibromuscular dysplasia (CAFD), a very unusual previously described cause of stroke, could be responsible for up to the third of carotidterritory stroke of so-called undetermined etiology among patients ≤55 years. In addition, the relatively high rate of recurrence under antiplatelet (28% at 14 months), was dramatically reduced by endarterectomy in patients with CAFD. From a therapeutic point of view, our results showed an excess rate of post-thrombolysis symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhages in older patients, a figure probably linked to the severe underlying hypertension-triggered cerebral microangiopathy. Owing to the lack of neurointerventionnal option in Martinique, we tested a new therapeutic strategy in patients with a proximal arterial occlusion not responsive to standard IV thrombolysis, consisting in an additional administration of IV tenecteplase, 0.1mg/kg. Our preliminary results were promising, leading us to plan a randomized study. Finally, most of the characteristics of stroke in this Afro-Caribbean population are probably shared by the majority of black people. Thus, our results could have a universal impact in the understanding of stroke burden in blacks.

Résumé : Les pathologies inflammatoires démyélinisantes primitives du système nerveux central (SNC) sont dominées par deux entités : la sclérose en plaques (SEP) et la neuromyélite optique (NMO). Ces deux pathologies se différencient par : 1. leur phénotype, la NMO se caractérisant par une myélite extensive dans le plan transversal et longitudinal et peu de lésions encéphaliques initiales ; 2. leur sévérité, le pronostic de la NMO étant moins bon que celui de la SEP ; 3. leur mécanisme immunologique, puisque l’immunité humorale domine nettement dans la NMO, cette pathologie répondant peu ou pas aux traitementshabituellement prescrits dans la SEP. Un anticorps sérique (IgG-NMO) a été retrouvé chez les patients atteints de NMO avec une sensibilité de 50-70% et une spécificité de 90-100%. Cet anticorps a pour cible le principal canal hydrique du SNC, l’aquaporine-4 (AQP4), qui se situe principalement sur les pieds astrocytaires jalonnant la barrière hémato-encéphalique. La SEP est relativement familière des neurologues car décrite sur le plan épidémiologique et dans son histoire naturelle depuis plus d’un siècle à travers de larges séries réalisées parfois en population générale. Son approche thérapeutique progresse suite à des essais contrôlés qui s’accumulent depuis maintenant près de 20 ans. Toutefois, la majorité des travaux ont été effectués chez les populations Caucasiennes en raison de sa plus grande fréquence dans ces populations. A l’inverse, la NMO garde encore un relatif mystère à cause de sa relative rareté, l’établissement très récent de critères diagnostiques et une physiopathologie très récemment éclaircie par la découverte de l’IgG-NMO qui a indiscutablement suscité un regain d’intérêt de cette affection. Ainsi, son incidence est quasiment inconnue de même que sa susceptibilité génétique. La progression du handicap de la NMO qu’il soit visuel ou moteur à l’évidence sévère, ne repose toujours pas sur des chiffres précis, la description des lésions neuroradiologiques reste encore très embryonnaire. Enfin, même s’il existe un consensus pour traiter énergiquement les poussées de NMO et les espacer, il n’existe quasiment aucune étude prospective.
Introduction: Aim of the study is to describe épidemiology, phenotype and treatment of demyelinating inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) namely multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in French West Indies.Epidemiology: MS emerged in the French West Indian (FWI) population with an incidence of 1.27/100 000 (CI 95%: 1.16-1.38) for the period 1992-2007 while incidence of NMO remained stable at 0.19/100,000 (CI 95%: 0.15–0.23). Both migration in Metropolitean France (MF) and decrease of sun exposure were risk factors for MS acquisition in FWI. Phenotype and treatment of NMO: NMO is a very rapidly disabling disease with median times to reach DSS 3, 6 and 8 of one year, 8 years and 22 years respectively. However, treatment by plasma exchanges were shown to reduce sequellae of NMO attacks ; mitoxantrone and rituximab reduced significantly annualized relapse rate (ARR) from 1.7 to 0.29 (p<10-4) and from 1,34 to 0,56 (p=0.0005) respectively, improving dramatically natural course of NMO.Phenotype and treatment of MS: Absence of Migration in MF in MS patients was found to be the strongest independent predictive factor of disability progression to DSS 6 (hazard ratio, 2.59; p=0.0002); beside short time to DSS3 (p=0.005), later age at onset (p=0.005), and multi-symptomatic onset (p=0.03). Treatment of MS by interferon beta-1 had a moderate impact in MS while natalizimab proved to be highly effective by reducing drastically ARR and inflammatory parameters on magnetic resonance imaging. Conclusion: Spectrum of demyelinating inflammatory disorders of CNS has reversed in French West Indies with overrepresentation of MS. Agressive therapy is needed to improve prognosis of NMO. Rapidly increasing of its incidence makes MS a new public health problem in French West Indies.

Résumé : En Guadeloupe, la prévalence du diabète est deux fois plus élevée qu'en France hexagonale, avec une prédominance féminine. En dehors des facteurs environnementaux, la vitamine D et certains polymorphismes de gènes impliqués dans son métabolisme seraient associés à un risque de pathologies métaboliques. Les androgènes sont également associés aux anomalies du métabolisme glucidique, soit directement, soit via leur transporteur SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Protein). Nous avons émis les hypothèses de recherche suivantes: 11 le statut en vitamine D et les polymorphismes des gènes impliqués dans son métabolisme pourraient être associés aux paramètres métaboliques chez des sujets Afro-Caribéens (AC). Ils expliqueraient l'importance des pathologies cardiométaboliques en Guadeloupe. 2/ la SHBG pourrait être associée aux anomalies du métabolisme glucidique, indépendamment des stéroïdes sexuels. Nos travaux sont présentés dans 4 études. Nous avons mis en évidence une prévalence élevée du déficit en vitamine D chez les sujets AC diabétiques de type 2. Nous avons trouvé une association significative entre le statut vitaminique D et le risque cardiométabolique chez ces sujets, mais aussi dans une population de sujets en hémodialyse chronique. Les polymorphismes des gènes impliqués dans le métabolisme de la vitamine D sont aussi associés à ce risque. Chez les sujets dysmétaboliques, une relation entre la SHBG, la graisse intra-hépatique, les hépatokines et les paramètres métaboliques a été mise en évidence, indépendamment des stéroïdes sexuels. En conclusion, la vitamine D et la SHBG pourraient être des marqueurs d'intérêt pour le dépistage des sujets à haut risque cardiométabolique.
In Guadeloupe, the prevalence of diabetes is two times higher than in Metropolitan France, with a female predominance. Apart from environmental factors, vitamin D and polymorphisms of genes involved in vitamin D metabolism would be associated with increased risk of metabolic diseases. Androgens are also associated with abnormal glucose metabolism, directly or through the Sex Hormone Binding Protein (SHBG). Résumé : Au cours de 325 relevés, 518 observations visuelles et 202 acoustiques ont permis de recenser 4 familles, 14 genres et 17 espèces, représentant un effectif total cumulé de près de 6000 cétacés contactés dans les limites de 15 mille nautiques des côtes en Guadeloupe. Les dauphins (Delphinidëe), constituent 33% des 36 espèces actuellement connues dans le monde. Six espèces plus rares ont été décrites. Parmi les cétacés à fanons, la baleine à bosse (Megaptera novaeangliae) migre dans les eaux côtières de décembre à fin mai et reste l'espèce la plus rencontrée. Grâce à un suivi individuel par télémétrie, il a pu être prouvé qu'au moins un individu de cette espèce pouvait séjourner dans l'archipel plus de huit jours. En 2010, une baleine à bosse de la baie du Moule à été suivie sur plus de 6300 kilomètres jusqu'au sud de l'Islande, vers les Iles Féroé. Une première estimation de stock sur la période de 2008 à 2011 propose que 442 baleines à bosse %CV 19,29 IC95% [302-645] évolueraient dans l'archipel côtier. Les carnïvores sont les plus abondants, avec parmi ceux-ci, le dauphin tacheté pantroplcal (Stenella attenuata) dont l'estimation indique que 270 à 300 individus évolueraient sur 1361 km2 avec une densité relative élevée (0,052 tndtvtdus/km>, %CV 90,16), principalement en-côte-sous-le-vent. L'analyse de la répartition spatiale et des facteurs du milieu indique une sectorisation géographique marquée des populations en zone côtière, avec des distributions influencées spécifiquement par la bathymétrie, la latitude, les distances à la côte et à l'isobathe 200, pour les informations principales et selon les espèces.
In 325 surveys, 518 visuai observations and acoustic 202 have identified four families, 14 genera and 17 species, representing a cumulative total ofnearly 6000 cetaceans assessed within 15 miles of coastal water ofGuadeloupe. Dolphins (Delphinidae), constitute 33% ofthe 36 species currently known in the world. Six rare species have been described. Among the baleen whales, the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate into coastal waters from December to late May and is the species most encountered. With individual monitoring by telemetry, it has been proved that at least one individual ofthis species could stay in the archipelago over eight days. In 2010, a humpback whale in the Bay ofmold were followed for more than 6300 km to the south ofIceland to the Faroe Islands. A first estimate ofstock over the period 2008 to 20 Il suggests that 442 humpback whales CV% 19.2995% [302-645] would evolve in the coastal archipelago. <..';:-.'") Résumé : An experimental techniques to estimate the influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on remote sensing of chlorophyll in water has been developed, based on the relationship between fluorescence and absorption of light by a substance. The profiles of fluorescence, chlorophyll content in sea water and estimates of light attenuation in water samples were used in the paper. These data have permitted to calculate the regressions linking fluorescence and light absorption at 450 nm by chlorophyll (ABC450) and by DOM (ABD450). The remote sensing needs no correction for DOM if M450 = 100* (ABC450/ABD450) much greater than 100. This technique has been applied to data collected during the international Skagex field experiment in the straits of Skagerrak and Kattegat in spring and autumn of 1990. It was found that M450 <= 100 everywhere in the subsurface layer. Unfavorable conditions for remote sensing of chlorophyll prevailed in the straits because of the uptake of DOM-rich water from the continent and the accumulation of phytoplankton in deeper layers. These and another processes can increase relative content of colored DOM even in waters of open ocean.

Résumé : The variability of ''yellow substance'' in waters of the Skagerrak and the Kattegat was studied during the international Skagex programme in 1990 and 1991. Data on attenuation of light and fluorescence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sea water were collected with a spectral transmissiometer and a submersible fluorometer within a depth range of 0-250 m at several stations. More than fifty-fold variations of fluorescence intensity over space and time were due to the combined action of different sources of DOM in the straits. The surface maximum of fluorescing DOM, related to river outflow, was spreading from Oslo fjord to the central Skagerrak in late spring. This maximum may be ecologically important because it diminishes shortwave PAR. In the autumn the brightest DOM fluorescence was found in the Kattegat and along the Norwegian coast in accordance with earlier studies. The local minima of DOM fluorescence are associated with the Jutland current. Both the instability of the current and a ten-fold difference in DOM content between deep layers of the Skagerrak and Kattegat resulted in strong synoptic variability of fluorescence in the transitional area between the straits. Seasonal and synoptic variabilities of ''yellow substance'' were minimal in the southern Kattegat. The vertical gradients of DOM fluorescence were mostly negative at the depth of the thermocline of the open Skagerrak in spring, reaching values of 40-50 % m-1. Fine structure and complex shape were inherent to fluorescence profiles from areas of intensive water mixing. DOM fluorescence closely covaried with attenuation of UV light: the correlation coefficient was + 0.9 for wavelength w <= 350 nm regardless of season. The inverse dependence between wavelength derivative and magnitude of UV attenuation in the straits did not change with season. DOM fluorescence and water salinity were negatively correlated at depths of 25-50 m but they varied independently in the upper 10 m. No significant correlation between fluorescence and nitrates has been found. Estimates of correlation with phosphates ranged from 0.7 to 0.8. In general, the changes of fluorescence were due to variations of DOM content in sea water but not to variability of DOM composition or state. The properties of DOM fluorescence in the Skagerrak-Kattegat area make it a useful natural tracer of water movements suitable for active remote sensing with airborne lidar.

Résumé : Phosphorus forms with respect to sediment characteristics, such as grain-size, and major chemical elements, were studied in French coastal marine areas (the Bay of Seine and the Loire and Gironde Estuaries).In the three areas, Fe/Al-bound phosphate (Fe/Al-P) and exchangeable phosphate (exch-P) were significantly related to the proportion of fine fraction (< 63 mum). The special association of these forms with fine particles, as well as the relationships between exch-P, Fe/Al-P and Fe showed that adsorption processes on Fe oxides had taken place. However, for similar Fe concentrations, Bay of Seine sediments showed Fe/Al-P concentrations which were four to five times higher than those found in the Loire and Gironde Estuaries. This was attributed to differences in sediment nature and processes in these two types of areas. Indeed, the Loire and Gironde Estuaries frequently show hypoxia.Calcium-bound phosphate (Ca-P) was found in all grain size classes with comparable concentrations in the Bay of Seine where there was no correlation between Ca-P and Ca. This corresponded to the calcium's marine origin (shells) in the Bay of Seine. In contrast, the correlation of Ca-P with Ca and the fine fraction of the sediment in the Loire and Gironde Estuaries was characteristic of the predominant metamorphic origin of Ca-P in these areas.Useful information for interpretation of P-forms can be obtained from major sediment characteristics. Thus, for areas where specific relationships have previously been established good estimates of P-forms could be predicted from sediment properties.

Résumé : The distribution and speciation of mercury (Hg) in the water column, the inputs (wet deposition and tributaries) and the outputs (atmospheric evasion and outlet) of an artificial partially anoxic tropical lake (Petit-Sa-Lit reservoir, French Guiana) were investigated oil a seasonal basis in order to appraise the cycling and transformations of this metal. The total mercury (HgT) concentrations in the oxygenated epilimnetic waters averaged 5 +/- 3 pmol L-1 in the unfiltered samples (HgTUNF) and 4 +/- 2 pmol L-1 in the dissolved (HgTD) phase (< 0.45 mu m). On average, the monomethylmercury (MMHg) constituted 8%, 40%, and 18% of the HgT in the dissolved phase, tile particulate suspended matter and in tile unfiltered samples, respectively. Covariant elevated concentrations of particulate MMHg and chlorophyll a in the epilimnion suggest that phytoplankton is ail active component for the MMHg transfer in tile lake. In the anoxic hypolimnion the HgTUNF averages 13 +/- 6 pmol L-1 and tile HgTD 8 +/- 4 pmol L-1. The averages of MMHgP and MMHgD in hypolimnetic waters were two and three times the corresponding values of the epilimnion, 170 +/- 90 pmol g(-1) and 0.9 +/- 0.5 pmol L-1, respectively. In the long dry and wet seasons, at the flooded forest and upstream dam sampling stations, the vertical profiles of MMHgD concentrations accounted for two distinct maxima: one just below the oxycline and the other near the benthic interface. Direct wet atmospheric deposition accounted for 14 moles yr(-1) HgTUNF, with 0.7 moles yr(-1) as MMHgUNF, while circa 76 moles yr(-1) of HgTUNF, with 4.7 moles yr(-1) as MMHgUNF, coming from tributaries. Circa 78 moles (similar to 17% as MMHg) are annually exported through tile dam, while 23 moles yr(-1) of Hg-0 evolve in the atmosphere. A mass balance calculation suggests that the endogenic production of MMHgUNF attained 8.1 moles yr(-1), corresponding to a methylation rate of 0.06% d(-1). As a result, tile Petit-Saut reservoir is a large man-made reactor that has extensively altered mercury speciation in favor of methylated species.

Résumé : The MEDECO Leg 2 cruise followed the MEDECO Leg 1 cruise that had crossed the Mediterranean Sea from the west to the east to study benthic communities of the Var canyon, deep corals found on the Calabrian Margin and cold seep ecosystems of the Mediterranean Ridge. The main objective of the MEDECO Leg 2 cruise was to study and compare, using a multidisciplinary approach, the structure and dynamics of deep-sea ecosystems at various active cold seep sites from the Nile deep sea fan and the Calabrian Arc, in the Eastern Mediterranean sea. During MEDECO Legs 1 & 2, a multiscale strategy was promoted to integrate (1) a high resolution cartography of geological structures (km2 scale), (2) a detailed mapping, including video imagery, of smaller-scale areas (scale 100 to 300 m2), (3) the physical, chemical and sedimentary characteristics of the habitat (multiscale), (4) the structure and functioning of faunal communities, including microbes, in terms of composition, diversity and biomass (multiscale), (5) small scale studies of interactions between organisms and their environment (scale < m2), (6) detailed ecophysiological studies at the organism scale on invertebrates. The use of the ROV “Victor 6000” and of various equipments for in situ and ex situ observations and measurements has helped reaching our objectives. The MEDECO cruise represented the key-Mediterranean cruise of the HERMES project “Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas” (P.I. P. Weaver, NOC-Southampton). The cruise was organized to follow the objectives of the HERMES program to better understand the functioning of deep ecosystems of the continental margins aiming at obtaining: (1) the description and quantification of the natural drivers (geological, hydrological, chemical factors) that control the distribution of ecosystems on margins; (2) the characterization and quantification of biodiversity, from bacteria to megafauna, as well as the knowledge of ecosystem functioning; (3) the study of ecosystems dynamics including the biology/physiology of key-species. Specific objectives. Colonization experiments conducted in the frame of two European programs, Diwoo and Chemeco, have given the opportunity to recover the fauna installed in the devices deployed during the Bionil cruise (2006) and to deploy new ones at the same site located in the pockmark area of the central province of Nile deep sea fan.

Résumé : The Mediterranean small-scale fleet is highly adaptive, showing a dynamic fishing intensity and strategy, and exploiting seasonal abundant resources. In this area, the aggregatory behaviour under floats of juvenile fish has been used since ancient times to exploit oceanic migratory species such as dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), using Fish Aggregating anchored Devices (fads). A total of 2 300 boats are engaged in this fishery from August to December, the main fishing areas being those around Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and Majorca. The fads ( arrow right m2) are made of different cheap floating materials, and are moored in fixed places, ranging from shore waters to areas 60 miles off the coast (1 500 m depth). Each boat deploys an average of 20 to 100 fads. The gears used are special surrounding nets without purse line, and traditional purse seine nets. The fishery exploits young-of-the-year dolphinfish (<6 months old), originated by a pre-spawning migration of adults from Atlantic waters. Their catches show high annual and monthly variability, depending on the recruitment and the accessibility of recruits to the fishery. Pilotfish (Naucrates ductor) and greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) are also exploited in this fishery as by-catch. A total of about 1 000 metric tons of dolphinfish are yearly caught mainly in September-October. The fads are historically laid in August. Recently, the fads fishing period has increased in Sicily, and the fads are laid in July, so as to catch pilotfish and greater amberjak juveniles. In recent years, the interest for this fishing method and the study of these fisheries has increased in the Mediterranean. Though the market and its seasonality limit this exploitation, this fishery is economically profitable with good revenue.

Résumé : In the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea waters, hake is considered as genetically homogeneous and form a unique stock with identical meristic characteristics. The vertebral mean vary from 50,68 (vertebrae) during the first year of life to 51,11 (vertebrae) for adults. 0-group Merluccius display a rapid growth with significant interannual variability (0.71 mm.day-1 in 2001 versus 0.74 mm.day-1 in 2002). The spawning period occurs in April and the average length on the firth January following the hatching is of 17.3 cm (first seasonal check / increment on the sagittal otolith is located about 0.143 cm from the nucleus). At the end of the first year of life the average length is about 24 cm. The longevity of the species is important and growth parameters (L = 138,24 cm ; K = 0,132) explain natural mortality coefficient of M = 0.21. No difference for growth between male and female has been observed for this stock. The ratio total weight / eviscerated weight is equal to Fc = 1,086. Both male and female have same spatial and bathymetric distribution. Juveniles are found in deep waters (< 17 cm length) and move to coastal waters where they display an average length of (33 cm length). Longer individuals are found in nursery areas where they feed and grow then move to deeper areas to spawn. Nursery areas are numerous and located in the Celtic Sea and in the bay of Biscay. In the bay of Biscay, disturbances resulted from hydrondynamics affect the settlement on the nursery grounds particularly in the southern part of the bay. Diet composition varies with age. Juveniles feed mainly on crustaceans (Euphausia kroni). At the length of 23 cm, individuals feed strictly on fishes. Sizes of preys are proportional with sizes of predators and preys are composed mainly of species that feed and reproduce close to the bottom. Cannibalism has been observed for this specie, and increases with age notably in the northern part of the bay of Biscay and in the Celtic Sea. Main preys are 0-group juveniles. This specie is assumed to be a passive predator catching its preys when they come to feed in the bottom. Although they are punctual, these results have been obtained after studies on the evolution of sizes during the first year of life (daily increments measurements) and on the spawning period parameters (back-calculating). Average length on the firth January following hatching and the position of the first seasonal check on the otolith are based on observations of the sizes on the firth January following hatching (obtained with growth rates and spawning period parameters). The results are similar to those described in previous studies, nevertheless they have to be confirmed with growth and diet composition analyses. A long term study appear essential to determine biological and ecological parameters of this species for sustainable management of the stock.
Les alertes quant à la surexploitation du stock de merlu européen sont nombreuses et récurrentes. Seulement l'estimation du niveau réel de l'état du stock a toujours posé des problèmes du fait de certaines lacunes dans la connaissance de la biologie et de l'écologie de cette espèce. Dans les eaux du golfe de Gascogne et de la mer Celtique, le merlu européen fait partie de la même population génétique et possède les mêmes caractéristiques meristiques. Sa moyenne vertébrale est de 50,68 durant sa première année de vie et évolue pour se stabiliser à 51,11 chez l'adulte. La croissance du merlu durant sa première année de vie et très rapide mais présente une variabilité interannuelle significative (0,71 mm .J-1 en 2001 et 0,74 mm .J-1 en 2002). Sa période de ponte maximale se déroule au mois d'avril et sa longueur au premier janvier suivant sa naissance est de 17,3 cm (la première marque hivernale est positionnée à 0,143 cm du nucléus de la sagittae). Au terme de sa première année de vie le merlu atteint une longueur de 24 cm. Sa longévité est assez longue (23 ans environ) et ses paramètres de croissance (L = 138,24 cm ; K = 0,132) permettent d'estimer son coefficient de mortalité naturelle à M = 0,21. Il n'a pas été établi de croissance différentielle entre sexe chez le merlu dans ces eaux. Le rapport poids total / poids éviscéré a été estimé à Fc = 1,086. Mâles ou femelles, les merlus ont une même répartition spatiale et bathymétrique. En général, ils sont très profonds à leurs stades juvéniles (< 17 cm) et ils se dirigent vers les eaux côtières pour les atteindre à 33 cm de longueur environ. Au-delà de cette taille, les merlus se concentrent au niveau des zones de nourricerie pour s'y alimenter avant de rejoindre les eaux plus profondes pour y pondre. Les zones de nourricerie du merlu sont très nombreuses et sont localisées en mer Celtique et dans le golfe de Gascogne aussi bien dans sa partie sud que dans sa partie nord. Les perturbations importantes dans l'hydrodynamisme du golfe de Gascogne (upwelling) semble influencer les niveaux de colonisation des zones de nourricerie notamment celles situées dans la partie sud du golfe. Le régime alimentaire du merlu évolue avec l'âge. Juvénile, il se nourrit principalement de crustacés (Euphausia krohni) et devient ichtyophage exclusif dès 23 cm de longueur. Le cannibalisme est une réalité chez le merlu et les merlus-proies sont les juvéniles du groupe d'âge G-0. Il s'intensifie avec l'âge notamment dans la partie nord du golfe de Gascogne et en mer Celtique ; Il est très faible dans le sud du golfe de Gascogne. La taille des proies évolue avec la taille du merlu et les poissons proies sont en général des espèces qui vont se nourrir ou se reproduire sur le fond. Ce comportement alimentaire fait que le merlu est un prédateur peu actif et qui attaque ses proies lorsqu'elles viennent sur le fond. Ces résultats, bien qu'ils ne soient que ponctuels, ont été obtenus après avoir déterminé le schéma d'évolution de la longueur du merlu durant sa première année de vie (dénombrement des accroissement journaliers) et des paramètres de sa période de ponte (rétro-calcul).La taille au premier hiver et la position de la première marque hivernale ont été déterminées en relativisant nos observations à l'estimation de la longueur du merlu au premier janvier suivant sa naissance : celle-ci étant obtenue en utilisant le taux de croissance et les paramètres de la période de ponte. Bien que l'ensemble des résultats obtenus, en ce qui concerne la répartition spatiale et les données sur la période de ponte, soient généralement conformes à ceux décrits dans la littérature, il est nécessaire de confirmer ceux concernant la croissance et le régime alimentaire. Pour cela, une étude à plus long terme semble indispensable pour parvenir à bien maîtriser l'ensemble des paramètres de biologie et d'écologie du merlu permettant ainsi une meilleure gestion de son stock.

Résumé : The work reported here was motivated by the economical importance of the pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris farming where high mortality rates are due to bacterial and viral diseases. It consists in the characterisation of two original peptides, the first members of a new multifunctional family of peptides from peneide shrimps, the stylicines. Those two peptides, named stylicines 1 and 2, are negatively charged (pI < 6.0), and characterised by a proline-rich N-terminal region and a C-terminal region containing 13 cysteine residues. Stylicines are synthesized by heamocytes where they are stored within small cytoplasmic granules. To understand the role of these peptides in the immune response of shrimps to a vibrio infection, their recombinant forms were produced in E. coli BL21 (DE3) plysS, purified and characterised. The two rstylicines display biological anti-proliferative and blood clotting activities. Only rstylicine 1 displays antimicrobial activities: antifungal against Fusarium oxysporum (MIC<2.5μM) and bacteriostatic against Gram (−) bacteria, Vibrio sp. (MIC<80μM). Moreover this peptide displays an LPS-binding activity (dissociation constant (Kd) of 9.6×10−8 M) and agglutinate Vibrio. penaeicida "in vitro". Finally, the presence of sequences coding for modified forms of stylicine 1 in some shrimp’s genome may be in relation with their lower ability to survive infections.
Les travaux présentés dans ce mémoire ont été motivés par l’importance économique de l’élevage de la crevette bleue du pacifique Litopenaeus stylirostris dont les fortes mortalités sont principalement dues au développement de maladies bactériennes et virales. Ils ont consisté en la caractérisation des deux premiers membres d’une famille originale de peptides multifonctionnels présents chez les crevettes pénéides, les stylicines. Ces peptides, nommés stylicines 1 et 2, sont des peptides anioniques (pI < 6.0), formés d’une région amino-terminale riche en résidus de type proline et d’une région carboxyterminale riche de treize résidus cystéines. Ces molécules sont synthétisées et stockées dans de petits granules présents dans le cytoplasme des hémocytes. Pour mieux appréhender leurs rôles dans la réponse immunitaire des crevettes à une infection par des Vibrio, leurs formes recombinantes ont été produites dans E. coli BL21 (DE3) plysS, purifiées et caractérisées. Les deux rstylicines présentent des activités antiproliférative et anticoagulante. Seule la rstylicine1 présente des activités antimicrobiennes : antifongique sur Fusarium oxysporum (CMI<2.5 μM), et antibactérienne (bactériostatique) sur Vibrio sp (CMI<80 μM). Ce peptide est également capable de se lier aux LPS des bactéries à Gram (-) (Kd= 9.6x10-8 M) et d’agglutiner V. penaeicida "in vitro". Enfin, l’existence de gènes codant des formes modifiées de la stylicine1, chez certaines crevettes, pourrait être en relation avec une diminution de la résistante des individus aux infections.

Résumé : The new bathymetric, magnetic and mainly seismic data acquired during the Zoesis cruise, reveal the presence of compressional features in the ''Fairway Ridge-Fairway Basin-Lord Howe Rise (northern part)'' area, west of New Caledonia. The compressive strain is especially responsible for the formation of the Fairway Ridge. The compression is emphasized by a regional unconformity that could be dated late Eocene, according to DSDP data in the area, and therefore synchronous with the late Eocene obduction of the New Caledonia ophiolites. The westward extension of the late Eocene compressive strain in the New Caledonia area is more developed than previously thought.
De nouvelles données bathymétriques, magnétiques et principalement de sismique réflexion, recueillies durant la campagne Zoesis, révèlent l'existence de figures compressives à l'ouest de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, a travers l'ensemble <( ride de Fairway - bassin de Fairway - partie nord de la ride de Lord Howe D. La tectonique compressive, en particulier responsable de la formation de la ride de Fairway, est soulignée par une discordance régionale qui, compte tenu des données de forages DSDP sur la région, serait d'âge Eocene supérieur et donc synchrone du charriage de la nappe ophiolitique sur le bâti Calédon&. Les effets de I'épisode compressif fini-éocène qui affecte la Nouvelle-Calédonie sont ressentis bien plus à l'Ouest que précédemment supposé.

Résumé : The mercury cycle was explored in the Petit-Saut reservoir / Sinnamary Estuary continuum in French Guiana. Main processes involve (i) photo-induced reduction, (ii) adsorption and desorption at the particle surfaces, (iii) methylating bacterial activity, (iv) precipitation and dissolution of iron oxyhydroxides and sulfides. Sources of mercury to the Petit-Saut reservoir consist of the partly impacted river-tributaries, the atmospheric deposition and the flooded soils or vegetation. Once into the reservoir, divalent mercury undergoes a large spectrum of transformations including speciation and phase changes. We, here, probe these processes and demonstrate that the Petit-Saut reservoir behaves as a privileged site for atmospheric recycling and in situ methylation. At the air / water interface, the mercury evasion exceeds by 50 % the direct atmospheric deposition. The in situ monomethylmercury (MMHg) production mostly occurs at the water-column chemocline and near the benthic interface. It reaches, for the whole reservoir, 8.1 moles yr-1 which corresponds to a 0.06 % d-1 methylation rate. We calculated that the 2003/04 period MMHg outputs from the reservoir to the Sinnamary Estuary averaged 13.5 moles yr-1 while the inputs were 5.4 moles yr-1. The dynamic Sinnamary Estuary is the genuine geochemical reactor of the continuum. There, the divalent mercury undergoes rapid yet profound partitioning among phases, recycling to the atmosphere and methylation processes. Those mostly originate from the long-scale oxygen paucity of the dam discharged waters. The expression of marked redox gradients and the intense organic matter turnover enhance the production of methylable inorganic mercurial species and tend to favor the sulfate reducing bacteria (methylating agents) activity. As a result, the dynamic Sinnamary Estuary exports 60 % more MMHg than it does import: 27 versus 17 moles yr-1. Further at large, in the saline estuary, we determined: (i) a non conservative behavior of dissolved (< 0.2 µm) mercury, (ii) a lowering of the mercury level of particles during mixing with the Amazon plume and (iii) a gradual dilution of the estuarine mercury concentrations by oceanic waters.
La retenue de Petit-Saut et, à l'aval, l'estuaire du Sinnamary sont deux centres d'altération du cycle naturel du mercure. Les processus sont, entre autres, (i) la photoréduction, (ii) la sorption / désorption en surface des particules, (iii) l'activité méthylante des bactéries, (iv) la dissolution / précipitation des oxyhydroxydes et des sulfures de fer. Les sources de mercure vers la retenue sont variées. Elles regroupent, en premier lieu, les affluents (partiellement orpaillés), l'atmosphère, les sols et la végétation ennoyés. Dans la colonne d'eau, les formes divalentes du mercure subissent un train complet de transformations couplant changements de phase et de spéciation. Nos résultats illustrent ces processus et démontrent que la retenue constitue un site privilégié de recyclage vers l'atmosphère et de méthylation. A l'interface air / eau, les exports en mercure de la retenue excèdent de 50 % le dépôt atmosphérique. La production endogène de monométhylmercure (MMHg) a lieu dans des sites particuliers : la chemocline et l'interface benthique. Elle atteint pour l'ensemble de la retenue 8,1 moles a-1 soit un taux de méthylation de 0,06 % j-1. On estime que la retenue exporte vers l'estuaire du Sinnamary 13,5 moles a-1 de MMHg alors qu'elle n'importe que 5,4 moles a-1. L'estuaire dynamique du Sinnamary constitue le véritable réacteur chimique du système fonctionnant en liaison avec celui de la retenue. Le mercure y décrit un cycle rapide aux processus de partition, de recyclage et de méthylation marqués. Ces processus résultent de l'oxygénation incomplète et durable des masses d'eau anoxiques exportées par la retenue de Petit-Saut. L'expression de gradients rédox prononcés conjuguée à un intense recyclage de la matière organique y favorise la production de formes méthylables de mercure ainsi que l'activité des bactéries sulfatoréductrices (agents de la méthylation). C'est pourquoi, l'estuaire dynamique du Sinnamary exporte 60 % plus de MMHg qu'il n'importe : 27 contre 17 moles a-1. Plus en aval, dans l'estuaire salin, nous avons mis en évidence : (i) un comportement non conservatif du mercure dissous, (ii) un appauvrissement du mercure des particules suite au mélange avec le panache de l'Amazone et (iii) une dilution des concentrations par les masses d'eau océaniques.
