In order to perform a human and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceutical products (PPs) in natural waters, it is necessary to accurately quantify a broad variety of PPs at low concentrations. Although numerous currently implemented analytical methodologies, less is known about the preservation of PPs in natural water samples within the period before analysis (holding time, storage conditions). This paper is the first literature review about the stability of PPs in natural waters (surface and groundwaters) during sample storage. The current work focuses on a comparison of the performances of the available preservation techniques (filtration, container materials, storage temperature, preservative agents, etc.) for PPs in samples. All 58 reviewed PPs may be successfully stabilized during 7 days in surface waters by at least one appropriate methodology regarding temperature, acidic and non-acidic preservatives. When temperature is not a sufficient preservation parameter f! or some PPs (hormones and fluoxetine) its combination with the addition of chemical agents into the samples may prolong the integrity of the PPs during storage in surface water. There is a strong need to use standard protocols to assess and compare the stability of PPs in environmental water matrices during storage as well as during analytical preparation or analysis (European criteria 2002/657/EC). Since the stability of PPs during sample storage is a critical parameter that could call into question the quality of the data provided for the concentrations, the design of stability studies should rigorously take into account all critical parameters that could impact the concentrations of the PPs with time.

Résumé : It is generally accepted that innovations in tuna purse seine technology have affected fishing operations and the traditional measurement of fishing effort, days fished including searching time. Not much is known, however, about the actual effects of the innovations on fishing performance. Data from the us tuna purse seine fishery in the Western Pacific Ocean were used to determine the impact of drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (fads) on the performance of the us fleet. The results indicate, inter alia, a high rate of success (96%) in catching tuna and high yield rate (37 t/successful set) for fad sets. Log sets were comparable in success rate (94%) and catch rate (36 t/successful set). Unassociated sets, on the other hand, had a higher catch rate (42 t/successful set) than fad sets, but a low success rate, 53 per cent. fad sets significantly improved the fleet's performance.

We present evidence that GPS velocity estimates of plate motions and fault slip rates agree to within uncertainties with geologic estimates during the most recent phase of the geologic evolution of the E Mediterranean region (post-Late Miocene). On this basis, we use the GPS differential velocities to estimate the timing of initiation of the principal structures in NW Turkey, the N Aegean Sea, and central Greece, including, the Marmara Sea, the Gulfs of Evia (GoE) and Corinth (GoC). and the Kephalonia Transform fault (KTF). We interpret these ages to indicate that the North Anatolian fault propagated across the N Aegean, opening the GoE and GoC and initiating the KTF, during the past 1-4 Ma. We further suggest that Aegean extension that was earlier more distributed across the Aegean Basin became focused on this new fault system allowing the southern Aegean and Peloponnisos to translate SW with little internal deformation, as observed today with GPS. This change in tectonic configuration may account for the clear geologic evidence for crustal thinning throughout the S Aegean in apparent contradiction with low present-day strain rates. We further show that the low present-day strain rate along the southern edge of the Aegean micro-plate requires substantial aseismic slip along the plate interface below Crete, consistent with the low level of historic, subduction-type earthquakes along this segment of the subduction zone.

Résumé : The Zagros Simply Folded Belt (ZSFB) is an active fold-and-thrust belt resulting from the still continuing continental collision between the Arabian plate and the Iranian plate, which probably started in the Oligocene. The present-day shortening (N25°) is well documented by focal mechanisms of earthquakes and global positioning system (GPS) surveys. We propose in this study a comparison of published palaeostress markers, including magnetic fabric, brittle deformation and calcite twinning data. In addition, we describe the magnetic fabric from Palaeocene carbonates (10 sites) and Mio-Pliocene clastic deposits (15 sites). The magnetic fabrics are intermediate, with magnetic foliation parallel to the bedding, and a magnetic lineation mostly at right angles to the shortening direction. This suggests that the magnetic fabric retains the record of an early layer-parallel shortening (LPS) that occurred prior to folding. The record of LPS allows the identification of originally oblique folds such as the Mand Fold, which have developed in front of the Kazerun Fault. The shape parameter of the magnetic fabric indicates a weak strain compatible with the development of detachment folds in the ZSFB. The palaeostress datasets, covering the Palaeocene to Pleistocene time interval, support several folding episodes accompanied by a counter-clockwise rotation of the stress field direction. The Palaeocene carbonates in the ZSFB record a N47 LPS during early to middle Miocene detachment folding in the High Zagros Belt (HZB). The Mio-Pliocene clastic deposits recorded a N38 LPS prior to and during detachment folding within the ZSFB at the end of the Miocene-Pliocene. Similarly, fault slip and calcite twin data from the ZSFB also support a counter-clockwise rotation from NE to N20 between the pre-folding stage and the late rejuvenation of folds. This counter-clockwise trend of palaeostress data agrees with fault slip data from the HZB. During the late stage of folding in the ZSFB, the Plio-Quaternary palaeostress trends are consistently parallel to the present-day shortening direction.

Résumé : In self-feeding conditions, a few individual sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax (L., 1758)) display strong activity in striking the food dispenser, whereas the remaining individuals of the group actuate the feeder weakly or never. Here, we investigated the effects of removal of the individuals showing dominant activity on the social and feeding behaviours in groups of juvenile sea bass. Following removal, new fish showing a dominant self-feeding activity quickly appear. They always come from the group of fish that have a low number of triggering actuations. This observation shows that it takes less time, about 5 days after the removal of dominant triggerers vs. 14 days at the beginning, for the re-establishment of the behavioural structure, suggesting the possibility of social transmission between individuals. The fish that show weak triggering activity seem to reach the high-food triggering level without obvious signs of competition. This experiment reveals the importance of the food-demand behavioural structure: the fish displaying the highest activity lead to a general food distribution and play a dominant role in feeding the entire group. Functional plasticity in this role within individuals is also demonstrated, indicating that the high-triggering function is essential for the group and not for the individual themselves.
Au sein d'un groupe de bars (Dicentrarchus labrax (L., 1758)) placés en auto-nourrissage, quelques individus disposent d'une activité forte de déclenchement volontaire du distributeur d'aliments. Les autres poissons du groupe disposent d'une activité de demande faible voire nulle. Ici, nous avons étudié l'impact du retrait des poissons à forte activité sur le comportement alimentaire et social de groupes de bars juvéniles. De nouveaux individus à forte activité réapparaissent rapidement, provenant exclusivement de la classe de poissons de faible demande. Cinq jours en moyenne suffisent après le retrait, contre 14 jours au début de l'expérience, pour que la structure comportementale se rétablisse suggérant l'existence d'une transmission sociale entre les individus. Ces poissons de faible activité semblent de plus atteindre leur nouvelle fonction sans aucun signe de compétition. Cette expérience révèle d'abord l'importance de la structure de la demande alimentaire puisqu'elle réapparaît après le retrait. Elle montre également que l'activité des forts manipulateurs conduit à une distribution générale de l'aliment et contribue à nourrir le groupe en entier. L'étude montre enfin une plasticité fonctionnelle indiquant que seule la fonction de manipulateur fort est essentiel pour la stabilité du groupe, non l'identité des individus par elle-même.

Résumé : The ovary is not solely the unique source of oocytes necessary for fertilization but also a crucial conductor of endocrine regulations of the reproductive system. In the fetal ovary, oocytes grouped in clusters are surrounded by somatic pre-granulosa cells, altogether delineated by a basement membrane and constituting ovarian cords. The formation of the definitive ovarian functional units requires their fragmentation into follicles formed by a single oocyte surrounded by granulosa cells and delineated by a basement membrane. This partitioning occurs within a tiny period and is dependent on the correct timing of the meiotic process, on an apoptotic wave that specifically targets oocytes and the remodelling of the basement membrane. Follicle formation is a crucial event of ovarian development because the follicle stock formed at the end of this process is non-renewable. Therefore, any disturbance of this process can lead to reproductive abnormalities in adulthood. Recent data on endocrine disruptors displaying estrogenic activity have involved the fragile estrogenic homeostasis in the process. We aimed at better understanding how the endogen estrogen 17b-estradiol (E2) contributes to follicle formation. To assess it, Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with E2 at different doses during follicle formation, /i.e./ in the 3 days following birth. We show that although this treatment impairs the development of the hepatic and ovarian detoxification systems, the female neonate is able to increase its estrogen clearance capabilities. Nevertheless, E2 treatment within this critical period triggers a dose-dependent decrease of oocyte number per ovary. Regardless of the E2 dose, puberty is advanced. All treated females are at least transiently fertile, yet these reproductive capabilities rapidly decline. A high (10 µg/day) dose of E2 leads to a secondary infertility characterized by anovulation that probably result from a dysfunction of the whole reproductive tract. By contrast, a lower (0.1 µg/day) dose of E2, that does not significantly modify neonatal oocyte survival, leads to a progressive reproductive senescence likely due to ovarian failure. Long-term troubles may originate from precocious E2 impact on the ovary since it disturbs ovarian transcriptome and produces many lesions on ovarian cell DNA.
L'ovaire est au cœur de la physiologie de la reproduction féminine. Il est à la fois à l'origine des ovocytes nécessaires à la fécondation et acteur des régulations endocrines du système reproducteur. Les ovocytes de l'ovaire fœtal sont groupés en amas bordés de cellules somatiques et d'une membrane basale, formant les cordons ovariens. Ces cordons ovariens se fragmentent pour former les follicules ovariens: un ovocyte bordé de cellules somatiques et d'une membrane basale. Cette fragmentation se déroule sur une courte période (/in utero/ chez la femme et juste après la naissance chez les rongeurs) et fait intervenir une vague de mort cellulaire programmée touchant les ovocytes pendant leur méiose et un remodelage de la membrane basale. La formation des follicules est une période cruciale du développement ovarien puisque le stock de follicules formés à l'issue de ce processus est non renouvelable. Son altération peut donc être à l'origine de troubles de la fonction de reproduction chez le futur adulte. Il existe une fragile homéostasie œstrogénique en place au moment de la formation folliculaire: chez la femme, l'ovaire se développe /in utero/, sous l'influence des œstrogènes circulants maternels et la production ovarienne fœtale. Chez les rongeurs, les follicules se forment lors de la levée de l'imprégnation hormonale maternelle au moment de la naissance. Nous avons souhaité comprendre comment le 17b-œstradiol (E2), œstrogène endogène, pouvait contribuer à la mise en place des follicules. Pour cela, des rattes Sprague-Dawley ont été traitées pendant la période de formation des follicules avec de l'E2 à différentes doses entre 0.01 et 10 µg/jour. Nos travaux démontrent que le traitement de rattes par des œstrogènes entre leur naissance et 3 jours induit une réduction dose-dépendante de leur nombre d'ovocytes. Bien que le traitement entrave le développement normal du système de détoxication hépatique et ovarien, l'animal est capable d'accroître ses capacités d'élimination des œstrogènes. Ces capacités sont toutefois insuffisantes pour bloquer les effets du traitement. Quelle que soit la dose d'E2 utilisée (0.1 ou 10 µg/jour), la puberté est plus précoce chez les femelles exposées mais toutes sont fertiles, au moins transitoirement. Cependant le traitement induit une dégradation rapide des capacités reproductives. L'E2 modifie la dynamique folliculaire chez l'adulte, longtemps après l'arrêt du traitement. Si une forte dose d'E2 réduit la survie des ovocytes lors de la formation des follicules et conduit à une infertilité secondaire due à un dysfonctionnement général du tractus reproducteur, une dose faible n'affecte pas la survie des ovocytes à court terme mais conduit à une sénescence reproductive précoce vraisemblablement d'origine ovarienne. L'origine de ces troubles pourrait résider dans les effets précoces de l'exposition à E2 : cette molécule altère le transcriptome ovarien et induit de nombreuses lésions de l'ADN des cellules ovariennes.

Satellite precipitation products are a means of estimating rainfall, particularly in areas that are sparsely equipped with rain gauges. The Guiana Shield is a region vulnerable to high water episodes. Flood risk is enhanced by the concentration of population living along the main rivers. A good understanding of the regional hydro-climatic regime, as well as an accurate estimation of precipitation is therefore of great importance. Unfortunately, there are very few rain gauges available in the region. The objective of the study is then to compare satellite rainfall estimation products in order to complement the information available in situ and to perform a regional analysis of four operational precipitation estimates, by partitioning the whole area under study into a homogeneous hydro-climatic region. In this study, four satellite products have been tested, TRMM TMPA (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis) V7 (Version 7) and RT (real time), CMORPH (Climate Prediction Center (CPC) MORPHing technique) and PERSIANN (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely-Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Network), for daily rain gauge data. Product performance is evaluated at daily and monthly scales based on various intensities and hydro-climatic regimes from 1 January 2001 to 30 December 2012 and using quantitative statistical criteria (coefficient correlation, bias, relative bias and root mean square error) and quantitative error metrics (probability of detection for rainy days and for no-rain days and the false alarm ratio). Over the entire study period, all products underestimate precipitation. The results obtained in terms of the hydro-climate show that for areas with intense convective precipitation, TMPA V7 shows a better performance than other products, especially in the estimation of extreme precipitation events. In regions along the Amazon, the use of PERSIANN is better. Finally, in the driest areas, TMPA V7 and PERSIANN show the same performance.

The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of prior cycling and a successive run on respiratory muscle performance during a cycle-run succession as performed in the triathlon. We hypothesized that despite the moderate intensity of exercise and the absence of exhaustion, the crouched cycling position would induce a decrease in respiratory muscle performance that would be reversed by the successive vertical run position. Ten male triathletes (22.6 +/- 1.1 yr) performed a four-trial protocol: (1) an incremental cycle test to assess maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), (2) 20 min of cycling (C), (3) 20 min of running (R), and (4) 20 min of cycling followed by 20 min of running (C-R). Trials 2, 3 and 4 were performed at the same metabolic intensity, i. e., 75 % of VO2max. Respiratory muscle force was assessed by measuring maximal expiratory (P(Emax)) and inspiratory (P(Imax)) pressures from the functional residual capacity (FRC) before and 10 min after C, R, and C-R. Respiratory muscle endurance was assessed one day before and 30 min after C, R, and C-R, by measuring the time limit (T(lim)), which corresponds to the length of time a respiratory load can be sustained before the process of fatigue develops sufficiently to cause task failure. The results showed a similar significant decrease in P(Imax) (132.4 +/- 4.9 versus 125.7 +/- 5.6 cm H2O, p < 0.05) and T(lim) (5.22 +/- 0.28 versus 3.68 +/- 0.32 min, p < 0.05) post-C and post-C-R (133.7 +/- 4.0 versus 126.9 +/- 5.2 cm H2O, and 5.29 +/- 0.18 versus 3.49 +/- 0.41 min, respectively, p < 0.05) compared with the pre-trial values. In contrast, P(Imax) and T(lim) were not significantly decreased post-R (131.8 +/- 6.1 cm H2O versus 129.6 +/- 6.4 cm H2O, and 4.90 +/- 0.69 versus 4.40 +/- 0.56 min, respectively, p > 0.05). We concluded that moderate intensity exercise not performed to exhaustion induced a decrease in respiratory muscle performance. Moreover, the respiratory muscle fatigue induced by prior cycling was maintained, and neither reversed nor worsened, by the successive run.

Résumé : The temporal evolution and spatial distribution of surface salinity and colored detrital matter (cdm) were evaluated within and adjacent to the Amazon River Plume. Study objectives were as follows: first, to document the spatial coherence between Amazon discharge, salinity, cdm, and the nature of the salinity-cdm relationship; second, to document the temporal and spatial variability of cdm along the trajectory of the low-salinity Amazon Plume, and third, to explore the departure of cdm from conservative mixing behavior along the plume trajectory into the open ocean. Time series (2003-2007) of surface salinity estimated using the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System and corresponding satellite cdm absorption (acdm) data documented a plume of freshened, colored water emanating from the Amazon. Salinity and acdm were generally coherent, but there were regions in which spatial patterns of salinity and acdm did not coincide. Salinity was oppositely phased with discharge, whereas acdm was in phase but lagged discharge and typically remained high after maximum discharge. Along the river plume trajectory, acdm was inversely correlated with salinity, yet there was considerable deviation from conservative mixing behavior during all seasons. Positive anomalies in a linear relationship between salinity and acdm corresponded to areas of enhanced satellite-retrieved net primary productivity, suggesting the importance of phytoplankton biomass or its subsequent remineralization as a source of cdm. Negative anomalies tended to predominate at the distal sections of the plume trajectories, an observation consistent with the process of photo-oxidation of cdm over observed time scales of days to weeks.

Résumé : Estimating diversity and abundance of fish is fundamental for the understanding of community structure and dynamics of coral reefs. Observations are generally gathered using Underwater Visual Census (UVC). These informations can also be collected by underwater video techniques involving no diver and allowing a high spatial and temporal coverage. The first part of this PhD thesis is a review of publications using underwater video techniques between 1952 and 2012. The second part present two rotating video systems used to study the diversity of ichthyofauna and habitats in the lagoon of New Caledonia: the STAVIRO (for "STAtion VIdeo ROtative") and the MICADO (for "Module d’Imagerie Côtier, Autonome pour le Développement de l’Observation sous-marine"). The third part of this work is a comparison of these techniques with UVCs and an analysis of the “observer effect” for the rotating video techniques. The comparison between rotating video systems and UVC showed that: (i) fish community data collected by UVC and by STAVIRO differed significantly; (ii) species richness and density of large species were not significantly different between techniques; (iii) species richness and density of small species were higher for UVC; (iv) density of fished species was higher for STAVIRO; and (v) only UVC detected significant differences in fish assemblages structure across reef type. The comparison of fish counts obtained from the same videos by different observers showed that for a defined list of species, estimates of species richness and total abundance can be considered as similar between observers with sufficient experiences (> 6 months). The last part of this PhD is an application of rotating video techniques to the study of daily temporal variations of the ichthyofauna. Daily variations were observed depending on the time of day and the tidal state and typical patterns of variations have been described for some species groups. The outcomes of this work bring original insights of new techniques complementary to traditional techniques in order to enhance our understanding of the functioning and dynamic of coral reef.
L’estimation de la diversité et de l’abondance des espèces de poissons est fondamentale pour comprendre la structure des communautés et la dynamique des récifs coralliens. Les observations sont généralement obtenues par des recensements visuels en scaphandre autonome (UVC). Ces informations peuvent également être obtenues de manière originale grâce aux observations issues des techniques vidéo sous-marines modernes sans plongeur qui permettent des couvertures spatiales et temporelles accrues. La première phase de ce travail de thèse synthétise l’ensemble des travaux ayant été effectués avec des techniques vidéo entre 1952 et 2012. La seconde phase, présente deux systèmes vidéo rotatifs complémentaires, utilisés pour étudier la diversité de l’ichtyofaune et des habitats marins dans le lagon de Nouvelle-Calédonie : le STAVIRO (pour « STAtion VIdéo ROtative ») et le MICADO (pour « Module d’Imagerie Côtier, Autonome pour le Développement de l’Observation sous-marine »). La troisième phase de ce travail consiste à comparer ces systèmes vidéo aux UVC puis à examiner l’effet « observateur » inhérent aux techniques vidéo rotatives. Il résulte de cette étude que : (i) les observations des communautés de poissons par UVC et STAVIRO différaient significativement, (ii) la richesse spécifique et la densité des espèces de grande taille n'étaient pas significativement différentes entre les techniques, (iii) la diversité et la densité des espèces de petite taille étaient plus élevés avec les UVC; (iv) la densité des espèces pêchées était plus élevée avec les STAVIRO et (v) seuls les UVC ont détecté des différences de structure des assemblages en fonction du type de récif. L’étude de l’effet « observateur » a montré que sur une liste d’espèces définie, les dénombrements et les identifications des individus peuvent être considérées comme similaires entre observateurs ayant une expérience suffisante (> 6 mois). La dernière phase de ce travail a permis d’appliquer la technique MICADO à l’étude des variations temporelles de l’ichtyofaune d’un site corallien à l’échelle de la journée. Elle a permis de mettre en évidence des variations cycliques journalières en fonction de l’heure et de la marée et des « profils type » de variations ont pu être identifiés pour certains groupes d’espèces. Ce travail de thèse permet ainsi de participer au développement de nouvelles techniques d’observations complémentaires des techniques traditionnelles afin d’enrichir les connaissances du fonctionnement et de la dynamique des écosystèmes coralliens.

Résumé : We studied the foraging rhythms of green sea turtles Chelonia mydas on the seagrass beds of N'Gouja Bay, Mayotte Island (Comoros Archipelago) with acoustic transmitters and moored listening stations. We monitored 8 tagged turtles (4 probable males, 3 probable females and 1 immature), from 70 to 109 cm curved carapace length (CCL), for durations ranging from 5 to 92 d. The turtles exhibited a regular diel pattern: they foraged mainly during the day (on average 87% of seagrass detections were between 06:00 and 18:00 h) and rested on the inner reef slope during the night. Night time feeding activities were observed on the seagrass bed when the night light was high. The presence of turtles on the seagrass bed at night was significantly correlated with a night light index (r = 0.54, p = 0.002), which included both moon light and cloudiness indices. Behaviour of the only immature individual observed was similar to adult turtles, although it rested more frequently around noon. All turtles displayed a high fidelity to 1 foraging site within the seagrass bed. Acoustic transmitters and permanent listening stations are an appropriate technique for long-term behavioural studies of turtles, with no human interaction with turtles during tracking, and represent a suitable technique to assess the possible effects of environmental changes or human activities upon green turtle behaviour.

Résumé : The understanding of reciprocal interactions between Crassostrea gigas and Vibrio sp., whether these be virulent or avirulent, is vital for the development of methods to improve the health status of cultured oysters. We describe an original non-invasive experimental infection technique using cohabitation, designed to explore these interactions. Using real-time PCR techniques we examined the dynamics of virulent and avirulent Vibrio sp. in oyster hemolymph and tank seawater, and made a parallel study of the expression of four genes involved in oyster immune defense: Cg-BPI, Cg-EcSOD, Cg-IκB, Cg-TIMP. No mortality occurred in control animals, but oysters put in cohabitation for 2–48 h with animals previously infected by two Vibrio pathogens suffered mortalities from 2 to 16 days post-cohabitation. Our results show that virulent Vibrio infect healthy individuals after only 2 h of cohabitation, with values ranging from 4.5×102 to 2×104 cells ml−1 hemolymph. Simultaneously, an approximate ten-fold increase of the total Vibrio population was observed in control animals, with a 6.6–78.5-fold up-expression of targeted genes. In contrast, oysters exposed to harmful bacteria had mean expression levels strongly down-regulated by a factor of 9.2–29 (depending on the gene) compared with control animals. Although oysters were still found to be infected by virulent Vibrio after 6–48 h of cohabitation, no significant differences were noted when comparing levels of each transcript in control and infected oysters at the same sampling times during this period: the important differences were noted before 6 h cohabitation. Taken together, our data support (1) the hypothesis that virulent Vibrio disturbs the immune response of this invertebrate host both rapidly and significantly, although this occurs specifically during an early and transient period during the first 6 h of cohabitation challenge, and that (2) expression of targeted genes is not correlated with vibriosis resistance.

A network of 54 survey GPS sites, 28 continuous GPS stations and three absolute gravity (AG) observation sites have been set up in the Alborz mountain range to quantify the present-day kinematics of the range. Our results allow us to accurately estimate the motion of the South Caspian block (SCB) for the first time, and indicate rotation of the SCB relative to Eurasia, accounting for the left lateral motion in the Alborz range. In light of these new results, it clearly appears that deformation rates vary along the range, the eastern part accommodating mainly left lateral strike slip (2 mm yr(-1) south of the range and 5 mm yr(-1) north of the range) with a very low range normal shortening rate on the Khazar thrust fault (similar to 2 mm yr(-1)), and the western part accommodating range normal shortening (similar to 6 mm yr-1) on the Khazar thrust fault with a left lateral component of similar to 2 mm yr(-1) north of the range and 1 mm yr(-1) south of the range. These present-day kinematics agree with geomorphologic estimated slip rates, but not the long-term deformation, corroborating the idea that the kinematics of the range have changed recently due to the change of SCB motion.;Modelling of the interseismic deformation suggests a deep locking depth on the central-western segment of the Khazar fault (similar to 30 km) in agreement with the Baladeh earthquake rupture and aftershock ranging between 10 and 30 km. Given this unusual deep locking depth and the 34 degrees dip of the thrust, a large part of the Alborz range is located above the seismically coupled part of the fault. Based on our AG measurements this part of the range seems to uplift at a rate of 1-5 mm yr(-1), in agreement with terrace uplift.

Résumé : As no indigenous species of commercial penaeid shrimp live in the waters of French Po1ynesia, the pre1iminary step in deve10ping shrimp aquaculture was to obtain maturation and spawning in captivity. Five species have been investigated. Wi1d-caught juveni1es from the New Ca1edonia 1agoon (f. merguiensis, f. semisulcatus, ~. ensis) and post1arvae from the Ga1veston NMFS 1aboratory (P. aztecus) and Fujinaga Institute (f. japonicus) have been used to-obtain adu1t stock. Shrimps are reared in circu1ar tanks of 12 m3 with a continuous water circulation through a coral sand bed. Rate of exchange is from 1 to 3 times a day. Throughout the year water temperature is between 25 and 29 C, sa1inity around 34.5 ppt, and pH 8.2. Solar energy is reduced by shade covers. Artificial pellets of different composition are given as food. In these conditions we have obtained: 1) about 1,000 spawnings and two generations in captivity from September 1973 to September 1974 with f. merguiensis; 2) spawnings of ~. ensis in 1973; 3) four spawnings of f. japonicus in September 1974; 4) about 20 spawnings of P. aztecus, but only aftcr removing one eyestalk; 5) maturation signs in P. semizulcatus but no spawning. In the southern part of the Armorican Massif, a Carboniferous continental sedimentation is preserved in two basins located along a dextral fault (the Nort-sur-Erdre Fault). The first one called the Ancenis Basin is Early Carboniferous in age. The second, Namurian in age (i.e. Early to Late Carboniferous), consists of coal-bearing basins (Basse-Loire Unit) and is supposed to be synchronous with the dextral displacement along the North-sur-Erdre Fault. The Carboniferous series of the Ancenis Basin presents intrusive rocks (granite, microgranites) and volcanic rocks (rhyolites). Chemical analyses indicate that they all belong to the same magmatic high-K calc-alkaline association of peraluminous composition. For the first time, this magmatic event has been dated using the LA-ICPMS U-Pb method on zircons. The obtained age is of 319.3 3.1 Ma and constrains both the maximum age of end of the sedimentation and the northward tilting of the sediments in the Ancenis Basin. This magmatic event is coeval with the sedimentation of the coal-bearing Namurian basins. These intrusions are interpreted as the feeding conduits of the volcano-sedimentary layers encountered in these basins. The present-day distance between the intrusive rocks in the Ancenis basin and their extrusive products would imply a minimal dextral displacement of nearly 20-25 km along the Nort-sur-Erdre Fault.

Résumé : Submarine mud volcanoes are important sources of methane to the water column. However, the temporal variability of their mud and methane emissions is unknown. Methane emissions were previously proposed to result from a dynamic equilibrium between upward migration and consumption at the seabed by methane-consuming microbes. Here we show non-steady-state situations of vigorous mud movement that are revealed through variations in fluid flow, seabed temperature and seafloor bathymetry. Time series data for pressure, temperature, pH and seafloor photography were collected over 431 days using a benthic observatory at the active Hakon Mosby Mud Volcano. We documented 25 pulses of hot subsurface fluids, accompanied by eruptions that changed the landscape of the mud volcano. Four major events triggered rapid sediment uplift of more than a metre in height, substantial lateral flow of muds at average velocities of 0.4m per day, and significant emissions of methane and CO2 from the seafloor.

Résumé : The fixation of carbon in tropical forests mainly occurs through the production of wood and leaves, both being the principal components of net primary production. Currently field and satellite observations are independently used to describe the forest carbon cycle, but the link between satellite-derived forest phenology and field-derived forest productivity remains opaque. We used a unique combination of a MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) dataset, a wood production model based on climate data and direct litterfall observations at an intra-annual timescale in order to question the synchronism of leaf and wood production in tropical forests. Even though leaf and wood biomass fluxes had the same range (respectively 2.4 +/- 1.4 and 2.2 +/- 0.4 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1)), they occurred separately in time. EVI increased with leaf renewal at the beginning of the dry season, when solar irradiance was at its maximum. At this time, wood production stopped. At the onset of the rainy season, when new leaves were fully mature and water available again, wood production quickly increased to reach its maximum in less than a month, reflecting a change in carbon allocation from short-lived pools (leaves) to long-lived pools (wood). The time lag between peaks of EVI and wood production (109 days) revealed a substantial decoupling between the leaf renewal assumed to be driven by irradiance and the water-driven wood production. Our work is a first attempt to link EVI data, wood production and leaf phenology at a seasonal timescale in a tropical evergreen rainforest and pave the way to develop more sophisticated global carbon cycle models in tropical forests.

The Anopheles midgut hosts diverse bacterial communities and represents a complex ecosystem. Several evidences indicate that mosquito midgut microbiota interferes with malaria parasite transmission. However, the bacterial composition of salivary glands and ovaries, two other biologically important tissues, has not been described so far. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of the bacterial communities in the mosquito tissues from emerging mosquitoes until 8 days after a blood meal containing Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes and described the temporal colonization of the mosquito epithelia. Bacterial communities were identified in the midgut, ovaries, and salivary glands of individual mosquitoes using pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. We found that the mosquito epithelia share a core microbiota, but some bacteria taxa were more associated with one or another tissue at a particular time point. The bacterial composition in the tissues of emerging mosquitoes varied according to the breeding site, indicating that some bacteria are acquired from the environment. Our results revealed temporal variations in the bacterial community structure, possibly as a result of the mosquito physiological changes. The abundance of Serratia significantly correlated with P. falciparum infection both in the midgut and salivary glands of malaria challenged mosquitoes, which suggests that interactions occur between microbes and parasites. These bacteria may represent promising targets for vector control strategies. Overall, this study points out the importance of characterizing bacterial communities in malaria mosquito vectors.

Hand disinfection with alcohols-based hand rubs (ABHRs) are known to be the most effective measure to prevent nosocomial infections in healthcare. ABHRs contain on average 70% by weight of one or more alcohols. During the hand rubbing procedure, users are exposed to these alcohols not only through dermal contact, but also via inhalation, due to the physical and chemical properties of alcohols volatilizing from alcoholic solutions or gels into the air. Ethanol ingestion is well known to increase risks of several diseases (affecting the pancreas, liver, cardiovascular system…), but there is a lack of knowledge about the effects of exposure to other alcohols (including n- or isopropanol) via inhalation and dermal contact, despite the worldwide use of ABHRs. This work aims at discussing possible health effects related to unintentional alcoholization (via inhalation and dermal contact) from professional ABHR usage to suggest the need for more research in this area (but not to question the value of ABHRs). Based upon an average of 30 hand rubbings per healthcare professional per day, it can be assumed that a healthcare worker may be exposed to a maximum 5,500 mg/m(3) per work shift, five times above the recommended occupational time weighted average limit. Thus, in order to answer the question posed in the title, studies on spatial and temporal variability of alcohol emission from ABHRs in real world situations and studies on certain high risk individuals are needed.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health problem in French Guiana, where Plasmodium vivax has become the dominant malaria species since 2000. As in others endemic areas, it is important to specify the pattern of vivax malaria relapses and to try to discriminate efficiently re-infections from relapses. METHODS: This study was conducted in children born between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2008 in Camopi, an Amerindian village located in the Amazon forest (n = 325), using an open cohort design. Primary and secondary attack rates of P. vivax were calculated using survival analysis. With the difference between the primary and secondary rates, this study aimed to estimate indirectly P. vivax relapse rate and evaluate its time evolution. RESULTS: Of the 1042 malaria attacks recorded, 689 (66%) were due to P. vivax (without mixed infection). One hundred and fifty one children had their primary attack with P. vivax and 106 had their two first attacks with P. vivax. In the absence of primaquine treatment, it was shown that P. vivax relapses mainly occurred during the first three months after the first attack. Thirty percent of children never had a relapse, 42% had a relapse before the first month after primary attack, 59% before the second month and 63% before the third month. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed that the relapse pattern in Camopi was compatible with the pattern described for the P. vivax Chesson (tropical) strain. In addition, due to the relapse rate time evolution, a simple arbitrary classification rule could be constructed: before 90 days after the primary attack, the secondary attack is a relapse; after 90 days, it is a re-infection. Adapted management of malaria cases based on these results could be devised.
