Survival varies according to pathogen exposure and high mortality events usually occur in summer during gametogenesis. In order to study the effects of gametogenetic status and ploidy (a factor known to affect reproduction allocation in oysters) on vibriosis survival, we conducted two successive experiments. Our results demonstrate that a common bath challenge with pathogenic Vibrio splendidus and Vibrio aestuarianus on a mixture of mature, spawning and non-mature oysters can lead to significant mortality. Previous bath challenges, which were done using only non-mature oysters, had not produced mortality. Immunohisto-chemical analyses showed the affinity of Vibrio for gonadic tissues, highlighting the importance of sexual maturity for vibriosis infection processes in oysters. Mortality rate results showed poor repeatability between tanks, however, in this bath challenge. We then tested a standardized and repeatable injection protocol using two different doses of the same combination of two Vibrio species on related diploid and triploid oysters at four different times over a year. Statistical analyses of mortality kinetics over a 6-day period after injection revealed that active gametogenesis periods correspond to higher susceptibility to vibriosis and that there is a significant interaction of this seasonal effect with ploidy. However, no significant advantage of triploidy was observed. Triploid oysters even showed lower survival than diploid counterparts in winter. ![]() | Etude des processus hydrodynamiques et écophysiologiques de la dynamique d'une algue invasive : Valonia aegagropila (C. Agardh) dans la lagune de Salses-Leucate Auteur(s) : Cesmat, Ludovic Éditeur(s) : Universite Montpellier II Résumé : Since 1980, the expansion of a green macro-alga: Valonia aegagropila (C Agardh) is observed in Salses-Leucate lagoon (France). It is currently distributed in the north of the lagoon with important biomasses (40 gDW/m²) eroding the cover of Zostera noltii. The free form of the alga can be transported with the surface or bottom currents depending on seasons. It multiplies mainly by vegetative reproduction. There are few studies on the ecophysiological capacities of V. aegagropila. This work tries to answer why (physiological adaptation) and how (mechanical process of transport) the alga invaded the lagoon, with an approach including observations, experiments in controlled environment and biological and hydrodynamic models. The growth capacities depend on temperature and light intensities, the nutrients absorption rates and internal nitrogen and phosphorus internal quotas were measured and modelled using a Droop model based on internal quota. Vertically transport was studied with laboratory experiments and measurements of biomass transport were made into the lagoon. The biological model (growth, vertical transport, mortality) was coupled to the MARS 3D hydrodynamic model with a meshgrid of 160m. The results show an adaptation of the alga to low availability of phosphorus and an annual growth of biomass controlled by the availability of nutrient during winter. The alga seems to occupy the whole zones where growth is optimal and the risk of invasion of the southern part of the lagoon is limited. This work opens on research prospects on an ecological model (confronting physiological capacities and competition of V. aegagropila, Zostera noltii, green algae and primary production), new physiological experiments, ecological observations and potential valorisation of V. aegagropila. Depuis 1980, est observée dans l'étang de Salses-Leucate l'expansion d'une macro-algue verte : Valonia aegagropila (C. Agardh). En 2004, elle était présente sur la presque totalité de la moitié nord de la lagune avec des biomasses importantes (jusqu'à 600 gPS/m²). L'algue envahit et érode également la couverture d'herbiers garant de la biodiversité, de la productivité et de la stabilité de l'écosystème. V. aegagropila se reproduit essentiellement de manière végétative (fragmentation des thalles) et possède la particularité de retenir de l'oxygène de la photosynthèse dans sa structure sphérique. Cet oxygène piégé lui donne la possibilité de mouvement sur la verticale et d'être transportée dans le domaine par les courants. Les conditions physico-chimiques de l'étang présentent de fortes variations saisonnières en salinité, en température et en turbidité, ainsi que des apports nutritifs faibles : la production primaire est principalement limitée par le phosphore. Il existe malheureusement peu d'informations sur V. aegagropila ainsi que trop peu de connaissances sur son écophysiologie. Elle semble vivre dans des milieux plutôt oligotrophe dans des régions tropicales à sub-tropicales. Ce travail basé sur une approche d'observations de terrain, d'expérimentations en milieu contrôlé (en laboratoire) et de modélisation des processus, a permis d'une part d'explorer les capacités adaptatives physiologiques de V. aegagropila aux conditions environnementales de l'étang et d'autre part de mettre à jour les modes de fonctionnement de la dynamique spatio-temporelle de la population. Les capacités de croissance ont été mesurées sur un large spectre de température et de lumière. Les capacités d'absorption des sels nutritifs dans l'eau et les facultés de l'algue à stocker l'azote et le phosphore dans ses tissus ont également été étudiées. D'autre part, un modèle de dynamique des populations a été conceptualisé puis développé. Les processus pris en compte dans ce modèle sont la croissance de l'algue (modèle à quota interne), la flottabilité de l'algue et la mortalité par surdensité. Ces processus ont été paramétrés en majeure partie par des expérimentations réalisées en laboratoire. Ce modèle 0D a par la suite était couplé au modèle hydrodynamique MARS3D (modèle Ifremer) mis en place sur la lagune de Salses-Leucate, utilisant deux grilles de calcul (160m ou de 80m de résolution). Les simulations réalisées permettent d'appréhender les capacités spatio-temporelles de la croissance de l'algue dans l'étang, le turnover annuel de la biomasse totale et les attracteurs de biomasse du système sous différents évènements météorologiques. Ces résultats sont comparés avec les répartitions cartographiques de la population observées in situ en 1999 et 2004 et des flux de biomasses mesurés au cours d'observations de terrain entre juin 2003 et septembre 2004. L'ensemble des résultats montre d'une part une adaptation de l'algue à évoluer dans un milieu pauvre en phosphore et d'autre part une croissance annuelle de la biomasse totale qui est principalement contrôlée par les apports hivernaux en sels nutritifs dans la lagune. Les résultats des simulations montrent également que V. aegagropila semble occuper à présent la majeure partie des zones favorables à sa croissance. Il est également montré que si sa capacité de mouvement peut favoriser la dispersion d'individus dans la lagune et accélérer la croissance de la population pour de faibles biomasses initiales, cette même capacité de mouvement joue plutôt un rôle de régulation de la population lorsque la biomasse totale devient importante. On peut penser que le risque de colonisation de l'herbier à zostère de la partie sud de la lagune (bassin de Salses) est limité. Ce travail ouvre enfin des perspectives de recherche sur l'amélioration du modèle de dynamique des populations de l'espèce, sur de nouvelles expérimentations à réaliser ou encore sur la surveillance écologique du milieu. Des propositions sont faites pour concevoir un modèle écologique confrontant les capacités physiologiques des macrophytes (algues vertes, Valonia et zostères) afin d'apréhender les phénomènes de compétitions et les modes de fonctionnement du réseau trophique de la lagune de Salses- Leucate. Des pistes sur la valorisation de la matière algale de V. aegagropila sont enfin proposées. March 2 - 6, 2009 Tahiti, French Polynesia Résumé : New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government of New Caledonia. This program has been designed in a multidisciplinary approach integrating the suspected multifactorial origin of shrimp mortalities. Environment quality in ponds (either sediment or water column) plays a major role in the shrimp ecophysiological status, influencing sensitivity to pathogens . DEDUCTION focuses on a better knowledge of phytoplankton composition and biogeochemical fluxes at the sediment-water interface in ponds. Impact of farm discharges is also investigated. In addition, a more fundamental work is conducted to understand the pathogenicity mechanisms of these two Vibrio species but also to prevent the occurrence of viral infections through a RNA interference approach. Markers of the ecophysiological status of broodstock, larvae, post-larvae and reared animals, such as enzymes testifying from an oxidative stress, are developed. Gain of performance (resistance to pathogens and growth) were obtained on hybrids of the New Caledonian and introduced Hawaiian strains. Finally the database Stylog is exploited in view of discriminating “good” from “bad” rearings on the basis of relevant indicators. Les études de faisabilité de l'aquaculture de crevettes ont débuté en Nouvelle-Calédonie dans les années soixante dix. Aujourd'hui environ 2000 tonnes de Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduite en 1978, sont produites chaque année de façon semi-intensive. Depuis quinze ans la production a été impactée par deux vibrioses : le syndrome d'été provoqué par Vibrio nigripulchritudo en relation avec la qualité de la tranche d'eau et des fonds de bassins et le syndrome d'hiver provoqué par Vibrio penaeicida en relation avec des chutes rapides de température. Dans le but d'élucider les processus entrainant des mortalités dans les élevages, Ifremer a conduit un programme de recherche depuis 2003 dans le cadre du projet DESANS (2003-2006) puis du présent projet DEDUCTION co-financé par les provinces Nord et Sud et le Gouvernement de la Nouvelle-Calédonie. Des marqueurs de l'état physiologique des oeufs, larves, post-larves et animaux en élevage, tels que les enzymes du stress oxydant sont utilisés.Les gains de performance (résistance aux pathogènes et croissance) sont obtenus sur des hybrides issus du croisement de la souche locale avec une souche hawaienne. Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : The environment is impacted by natural and anthropogenic disturbances that occur at different spatial and temporal scales, and that lead to major changes and even disequilibria when exceeding the resiliency capacities of the ecosystem. With an annual mean flow of 1700 m(3) s(-1), the Rhone River is the largest of the western Mediterranean basin. Its annual solid discharges vary between 2 and 20 Mt, with flood events responsible for more than 70% of these amounts. In the marine coastal area, close to the mouth, both flocculation and aggregation lead to the formation of fine-grained deposits, i.e. the prodelta. This area is characterized by sediment accumulation rates up to 20-50 cm yr(-1) and high accumulations of particle reactive contaminants such as various man-made radionuclides released into the river by nuclear facilities or arising form prior atmospheric nuclear tests (1954-1980) and the Chernobyl accident (April 1986). This prodelta, however, cannot be considered as a permanent repository for particle reactive pollutants since it is subjected to reworking processes. Sediment dynamics had to be linked to the influences of hydrodynamic and atmospheric events such as high flow rates or storms close to the Rhone River mouth. An experiment was carried out during the winter 2006 based on the deployment of two ADCPs and six altimeters at the Grand Rhone mouth for several months. This type of installation has never been used before in this area because of the hard meteorological conditions and the strong fishing activities. However, results showed pluricentimetric rises of the sedimentary level just after river flood events and decreases during storms, generated by southeast winds. Radiotracers and grain size depth profiles helped to characterise the studied events and to establish inventories of sediments and radionuclides. A cruise (CARMEX) was carried out during this same period to collect water samples, suspended particles and sediment cores. The results enabled us to link both river flow and wind characteristics to events recorded on the sea floor, i.e. resuspension, accumulation, consolidation, etc. Deposits of 11 cm of sediments were estimated during flood periods and bottom shear stresses up to 5 N m(-2) were calculated during sediment erosion phases. ![]() | Sur les "upwellings" équatorial et côtier (5°N) dans le Golfe de Guinée Auteur(s) : Colin, C Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The wind, temperature and current data collected during the joined French-USA FOCAL/SEQUAL programme carried in the equatorial Atlantic band in 1983 and 1984, allowed for the first time a simultaneous study of both the equatorial and coastal (5-degrees-N) upwellings along 4-degrees-W. At the equator, the decreases of both the surface temperature and the depth of the thermocline in boreal summer are correlated with the zonal component of the local windstress in the period band 1-2 months. This corresponds to the time required by the thermocline to lift up at 0-4-degrees-W in the presence of an easterly wind. The local wind cannot however explain the entire vertical variability of the thermal structure at 0-4-degrees-W. The correlation function shows in addition that the temperature there is highly correlated to the wind recorded at St Peter and St Paul Rocks (SPP) in the period band 0-2 months. This time scale is the one required by the Kelvin and Rossby waves to propagate along the equator through equatorial wave guide dynamics. The influence of these waves seems particularly important when considering the upward displacements of the thermocline both in February-March when the winds abruptly relax and in November-December when the wind at 0-4-degrees-W is southwesterly with no secondary negative maximum in the wind record at 1-degrees-N-29-degrees-W (SPP), contrary to the climatological wind field. The computation of the different terms of the heat equation applied to an homogeneous surface layer shows that the cooling is entirely due to vertical advection and eddy diffusion. The cooling would be more effective without the atmospheric heat flux and the horizontal advection of heat transported both by the South Equatorial Current at the surface and the southward current at the bottom of the mixed layer. At the coast, the amplitude and duration of the upwellings are not constant all along the coast: in boreal summer, they are maximum east of the two capes (Palmas and Three Pointes) while in winter the strength of the cooling is maximum in the east of Cape Palmas and then decreases eastward. The meridional slope of the thermocline off the coast concerns a distance which is much larger than the internal Rossby radius of deformation and is coherent with the latitudinal extension and intensity of the Guinea current both in summer and winter. In addition to this geostrophic adjustment, the upward tilt of the thermocline in summer is enhanced by the intensification of the component of the wind parallel to the coast. The application of a simple linear model forced with an eastward wind at that time explains the surface maximum cooling at the coast and the current distribution in both vertical and meridional directions. The two maxima of the zonal component of the Guinea current, in summer (main one) and in winter are in phase with the intensity of the vertical component of the windcurl. The application of the Sverdrup equations shows that the current speeds computed, for both seasons, are of the same order of magnitude as the speeds observed. The phytoplankton species composition of the area was investigated using light and electron microscopy to analyze bottle and net samples collected at several stations in spring 2000 and 2003. Serial dilution cultures established from bottle samples were also examined. A total of 168 phytoplankton taxa was identified, consisting of 73 Coscinodiscophyceae, 47 Dinophyceae, 25 Coccolithophyceae and 4 Prymnesiophyceae, 5 Prasinophyceae, 3 Chrysophyceae, 2 Cryptophyceae, 2 Dictyochophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 1 Pelagophyceae, 1 Choanoflagellidea, 1 Filosea and 3 incertae sedis. We also provided a brief taxonomic description and original micrographs for 25 of the smallest and/or less known species identified in the study area, which may go undetected during routine microscopical analysis of fixed samples. Among these, 10 species were recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, confirming the need of detailed studies to reveal the biodiversity and biogeography of Mediterranean phytoplankton. Two long baseline tiltmeters have been installed in a shaft in 2007, along with classical hydrogeological monitoring tools in order to investigate the relationship between current karst deformation and hydrology. Dye tests have shown that the plateau is drained towards the East, to the spring of Bramafam, except for its Western third. Karst tilting, as recorded by the tiltmeters, is linked to rainfall events. These instruments bring additional information to characterize different reservoirs: the deep karst aquifer of Bramafan with high amplitude oscillations of its water table, up to 100 m, the perched aquifer of Moustiques shaft whose response is attenuated, and several slope aquifers with reduced oscillations (Fontaniers, Castel Bon Pré). Tilt deformation reaches 8 μrad with a definite orientation between N90°E and N100°E. The best correlation between hydrology and tilts is observed for the deep aquifers. If the first autumn rainfall is ineffective on tilt, it recharges the epikarst and refills the reserves. The winter rains cause the water to flush towards the eastern deep aquifer and provokes a quick tilting of the plateau. Finally, the long term variations in tilt and water table show a very good correlation The relationship between current hydrological deformations and tectonics is also analyzed; broken and shifted speleothems in the shafts indicate a general shift of the plateau towards the south. From seasonal variations (2006-08) and decadal trends (1986-2008) of TM concentrations. three groups of elements can be distinguished They consist of different aerosol sources: crustal-derived elements (Al, Fe. Mn and Co), trace metals of anthropogenic origin (Pb, Cd and Zn) and a third, intermediate, group of trace metals that presented both anthropogenic and natural/crustal influences (Ni and Cu). Reproducible seasonal patterns were observed for crustal and intermediate elements with highest concentrations between May and November. while anthropogenic trace metals did not show a pronounced seasonal cycle Nevertheless, highest concentrations of anthropogenic trace metals occurred mostly in autumn/winter. Aerosol concentrations of anthropogenic TMs decreased remarkably over the last two decades, while crustal trace metals did not show any evolution Nickel and copper aerosol concentrations remained constant, as well. Lead concentrations decreased from 1986 (29.34 ng m(-3)) to 2008 (3.33 ng m(-3)). overall by 90%. Cadmium and zinc aerosol concentrations decreased by 66 and 54%, respectively, between 1998 and 2006-08. from 0.27 to 0.09 ng m(-3) and from 23.9 to 10.9 ng m(-3). respectively. Rapport de recherche bibliographique Résumé : La question de l'Energie Thermique des Mers (E.T.M.) est régulièrement suivie par le Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) depuis sa fondation en 1970. Une première synthèse du sujet y a été effectuée en 1974 par M.M. MASSART et WINTER (X.) La seconde synthèse française date de 1976 (M. VITUREAU).
Le CNEXO dispose actuellement d'une bibliographie, essentiellement française et américaine, bien répertoriée jusqu'au milieu de l'année 1976. Parallèlement, on observe qu'à partir de cette même année se multiplient aux États-Unis les symposiums et congrès consacrés à l'E.T.M. totalement ou en partie. ![]() | Impact of the winter North-Atlantic weather regimes on subtropical sea-surface height variability Auteur(s) : Barrier, Nicolas Treguier, Anne-marie Cassou, Christophe Deshayes, Julie Éditeur(s) : Springer Résumé : Interannual variability of subtropical sea-surface-height (SSH) anomalies, estimated by satellite and tide-gauge data, is investigated in relation to wintertime daily North-Atlantic weather regimes. Sea-level anomalies can be viewed as proxies for the subtropical gyre intensity because of the intrinsic baroclinic structure of the circulation. Our results show that the strongest correlation between SSH and weather regimes is found with the so-called Atlantic-Ridge (AR) while no significant values are obtained for the other regimes, including those related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), known as the primary actor of the Atlantic dynamics. Wintertime AR events are characterized by anticyclonic wind anomalies off Europe leading to a northward shift of the climatological wind-stress curl. The latter affects subtropical SSH annual variability by altered Sverdrup balance and ocean Rossby wave dynamics propagating westward from the African coast towards the Caribbean. The use of a simple linear planetary geostrophic model allows to quantify those effects and confirms the primary importance of the winter season to explain the largest part of SSH interannual variability in the Atlantic subtropical gyre. Our results open new perspectives in the comprehension of North-Atlantic Ocean variability emphasizing the role of AR as a driver of interannual variability at least of comparable importance to NAO.
