Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut Libraries Archives & Special Collections at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut Libraries Résumé : (Funding) News from: http://www.crl.edu/news/8702 ; "LAMP (formerly the Latin American Microform Project) supported the digitization of approximately 5,000 documents dated between 1844 and 1900 in a collection held by the University of Connecticut. These consist of legal court cases, mostly civil, from the Corte de Primera Instancia (Apellate Court) of the district of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. In 2000, the University of Connecticut Thomas J. Dodd Research Center acquired these unique materials about the Arecibo appellate court district, which includes the towns of Arecibo, Barceloneta, Camuy, Ciales, Hatillo, Manatí, Morovis, Quebradillas, and Utuado. The cases cover the full range of civil litigation that might have been brought to court during that period. Cases about disputes over economic holdings such as land, slaves, and livestock hold special interest. The collection is also a treasure trove for genealogists, historians, legal researchers, and other social-sciences researchers interested in Puerto Rico’s social dynamic during the 19th century." This Ph D explores relationships between history and underwater archaeology in order to study the martime risks in West Indies through the example of Guadeloupe. Shipwreck phenomenon is presented as a prism to analyze maritime aspect of Guadeloupe history during the time of sailing, from the end of 17th to first half of 19th century. The study is based on a archivaI analysis of administrative correspondence and surveys in marine archives and French kingdom main ports linked with West Indies. Shipwreck is defined through an quantitative study of losses : quantity, frequency, localization, chronological spread. This point of view permits to qualify the this phenomenon as serial but low regarding to the maritime activity, This fact is not a lack in order to use this event as a reading key of an American French colony, its economy and society. About 550 shipwrecks have been recorded from the end of 17th to first half of 19th century, thi represents less than 1% of maritime activity of the colony .. This phenomenon is mainly a coastal and a port event, linked with climatic hazard as hurricanes, but the study focused also on others causes . The objective is to set up a losses' typology dealing with ships types, functions, cargos, and crews. The perception of losses risks (seafaring conditions, wrecks dangers and climatic hazards) is presented in order to analyze relationships between risks and means in order to prevent them or reduce their consequences. Different projects from first hydrographical missions during 18th century to first ports building projects at the beginning of 19th century have been studied in order to establish if they answer the losses risks. http://www.theses.fr/2013AGUY0607 | Partager |
The “Blues of the Cane and Cotton”: a Comparative Study of Social and CulturalFunctions of The Gwo-Ka and The Blues ; Diasporas protéiformes Le « Blues de la canne et du coton » : étude comparative des fonctions socioculturelles du gwo-ka et du blues Auteur(s) : Gadet, Steve, Auteurs secondaires : Centre de Recherche Interdisciplinaire en Lettres, Langues, Arts et Sciences Humaines (CRILLASH) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Université des Antilles Résumé : International audience The article deals with the intercultural exchanges between two cultural movements rooted in the African Diasporas. In Guadeloupe, a French island in the Caribbean, Gwo-ka was born on the plantation in the 17th century. Blues appeared in the southern United-States by the end of the 19th century. In order to illustrate the similarities between these two afro-diasporic cultural phenomena, the article first examines the economic and social factors that prompted their emergence. Second, it compares their socio-cultural functions within their respective communities. Using Paul Gilroy’s theory of the Black Atlantic, the article concludes with a questioning of his thesis within the framework of the present study. We will explore the bonds linking the new age of European imperialism to the first globalized economy of the period 1870-1914, since both developed concurrently. Through a general overview of the development of Europe’s new concepts of empire prior to the First World War, we will try to establish norms tending to show how the first globalization of the 19th century found its inspiration in concepts that had been established to foster the colonial expansion of the great European Powers. Still, we will also insist on the differences between these two ways of conceiving international relations. 5th International Otolith Symposium 2014 - IOS2014 : Book of abstracts Auteur(s) : ICES Résumé : Implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to marine management points to several shared objectives between conservation and fishery management that require better knowledge of the life history of the exploited resources, elucidation of the information encoded in the calcified tissues (otoliths, scales, bones, shells, and corals) of marine and freshwater organisms, and support for knowledge-based, sustainable ocean management and use.
Calcified tissues have been employed since the 19th century to gain knowledge of life traits, population structure, and environmental relationships of fish and molluscs.
Breakthrough advances include the discovery by Pannella (1971) of the daily growth increments and the discovery by Radtke (1984) of otolith tracer approaches, resulting in an exponential growth of publications and four dedicated international symposia.
IOS2014 will be the fifth in a series of independent symposia convened since 1993, to encourage the exchange of information and expertise, and promote the development of new techniques and applications for otolith-based analysis in ecology, management, and conservation. This international forum is the centre for the exchange of information on developments in the field. New techniques of analysis, statistical treatment, and indeed new areas of application are all presented in this forum.
The IOS series started in Hilton Head (USA) in 1993, followed by IOS1998 in Bergen (Norway), IOS2004 Townsville (Australia), and the IOS2009 Symposium held in Monterey (USA). In general, attendance ranged between 250–350 participants. IOS2009 counted 268 registrants from 36 countries, despite the economic crisis. At the end of the 19th century, the watchmakers of Geneva are confronted to the arrival of products retaking abusively its brands and the name of Geneva. In response, watchmakers, retailers and public actors decided to protect this economic sector. One of the solutions picked up was to identify Geneva-made watches by certifying their quality. In 1886, the creation of a hallmark of the State and the Republic of Geneva is the first label associating the expertise of a territory with the technical quality of its products. Originally defensive, the hallmark promotes high-quality products characterized by a good invoice, a reliability and their origin, a branding of the luxury of Geneva watches.
