Are planktonic larvae of marine benthic invertebrates too scarce to compete within species? Auteur(s) : Strathmann, Rr Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : Several models for the evolution of complex life histories have assumed a carrying capacity for both larval and postlarval stages. In addition, the densities of larvae in laboratory experiments are often so high that there is competition for food. Published values for maximal clearance rates and estimated abundances of larvae suggest that these assumptions and experimental conditions are unrealistic for most marine larvae. For most ciliated larvae, maximum clearance rates are at most a few mi of water daily, and their estimated larval concentrations are at most one to several larvae per liter. Therefore these larvae appear to be too scarce for their grazing to affect their food supply. Larvae of most species are also scarce relative to co-occurring planktonic animals that feed on particles in the same size range. Larvae of many species are scarce relative to co-occurring larvae with a similar feeding apparatus. These observations suggest that larvae of most species have a negligible effect on their food supply. Exceptions could occur when a single species of larva dominates the zooplankton; such circumstances appear to be rare, although extreme aggregations of larvae dominated by a single species could be missed by pump or net samples. Analogous but more conjectural arguments can be made for density-dependent attraction of predators to larval prey. These inferences apply to single species, not to meroplanktonic larvae as a whole: in some coastal waters, larvae of benthic invertebrates comprise a large portion of the multicellular planktonic animals. Also, a species' larval growth may be food-limited in many waters, even when the abundance of food is independent of the abundance of its larvae. Physiological responses of female and male black-lip pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera) to different temperatures and concentrations of food Auteur(s) : Chavez-villalba, Jorge Soyez, Claude Aurentz, Hermann Le Moullac, Gilles Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : This study was designed to measure responses of four-year-old black-lip pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera) to different temperatures and food concentrations and to identify the energy requirements of each sex. Oysters were fed a monospecific microalgal diet of Isochrysis affinis galbana (T-iso). Measurements of oxygen consumption and ingestion rates were carried out at 24 degrees C and 27 degrees C and at two algal (T-iso) concentrations: 5000 and 30 000 cell ml(-1). Glycogen content in adductor muscle, absorption efficiency and scope for growth were also estimated. Females and males responded differently to environmental factors, with food level being the most influential parameter. Oxygen consumption and absorption efficiency were significantly higher in females than in males, but males had significantly higher glycogen content than females. At high food concentration, glycogen content, ingestion rate, oxygen consumption, and scope for growth were significantly higher than at the low food concentration. Only absorption efficiency was significantly higher at the low food concentration. Oxygen consumption was significantly higher at 27 degrees C than at 24 degrees C. These results indicate that females and males have different bioenergetic functioning and that energy demands for reproduction are higher in females. Multi-decadal changes in two co-occurring ophiuroid populations Auteur(s) : Blanchet, Aline Dubois, Stanislas Hily, Christian Rochette, Sebastien Le Goaster, Edouard Guillou, Monique Éditeur(s) : Inter-research Résumé : Mixed beds of Ophiocomina nigra and Ophiothrix fragilis (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea) are usually predominated by O. fragilis and are reported to be stable over time. The Bay of Brest (Brittany, France) is a highly productive ecosystem where both species co-occur in the main central part. Using a geostatistical approach, we tested for changes in O. nigra and O. fragilis density and total biomass patterns between 1987 and 2011. Our results highlighted an increase in O. nigra population size and the induction of a spatial shift of the co-occurring O. fragilis. O. nigra increased similar to 5 times in density and covered almost all the study area, while its density-dependent biomass increased similar to 3 times (22 t km(-2), ash-free dry mass) between 1987 and 2011. Overall, the O. fragilis population decreased in density by similar to 30%, but its total biomass did not change over time. The current distribution pattern revealed a clear spatial exclusion of O. fragilis from the central part of the study area toward the southern part, overlapping beds of dead slipper limpet Crepidula fornicata, which were formerly considered to be the dominant suspension-feeder species in the bay. The success of O. nigra colonization is linked to its biological and functional traits, as well as deep changes in food supply over the studied period. Ecological consequences of such a large change in the benthic compartment of the bay are explored in the light of associated changes in environmental patterns. The management of Norway Lobster and Hake fisheries can be considered as the most important issue in the Gascogne gulf. Calculation methods used to evaluate prediction variations under various efforts and mesh constraints all pinpoint to the crucial role narrow mesh fishing plays in Hakes' Northern stock status. The involvement of Gascogne gulf Norway Lobster fisheries regarding Hakes over exploitation seems over dimensioned when comparing the size of both of these stocks. Hake stocks spread from Northern Great Britain to Northern Spain, while Norway Lobster stocks are located in the Gascogne gulf's mud flats. The biological solution is well known and consists in globally increasing mesh nets to 80mm which would bring up Hakes yield to its most. It would be unreal to pretend all parties involved in Hake stocks will come to use them. For now, it is mostly an economical issue since many vessels continue on with an exploitation scheme dating from the 60's and fish on coastal mud flats which are the most exploited zones and where their catch is detrimental to juvenile class Hakes and Norway Lobsters. Considering our limited time, this study will cover bio- economical modelisation preparation. You will therefore find a description of fisheries and an exploitation assessment based on 1986's available data.
2 - Accomplished work
2. 1 Fishery description
Presenting the problems and preparing ulterior analyses was first and foremost. Norway Lobster vessels supposedly, according to evaluation models used, test immature Hakes in such a manner that all stock exploitation is jeopardized. Norway Lobster distribution is closely linked to the nature of the ocean floor since it can only build its habitat on fine sediment. Hakes' habitat is not as restrictive and is linked to food supply, especially euphausiid shrimps, so they can be found on sandy and sandy-sedimental floors. Norway Lobsters are sought by a fleet of 400 to 450 ships which characteristics widely vary according to their home port. On the northern part, fisheries are close to exploitation ports where Norway Lobsters and miscellaneous catch yield is sufficient to support an older fleet. On the southern part, the structure is diversified and flexibility usually rules, more modern vessels can easily switch their target on a seasonal or daily basis. Globally, Hakes' northern stocks are slightly on the rise. This rise is probably due to global mesh size increase, even if slight and a decrease on fishing effort where immature species are caught. Norway Lobster stocks unloading is stable or slightly lower and yields, as far as northern fishery are concerned, vary and oscillate between ±15 to ±20 % at about an average of 100 kg/day. Biological parameters used in the evaluations for each species are those used in CIEM and CEE work cells. Among those parameters, those describing growth are the greatest. For Hakes, an intermediary growth equation between males and females has been used. For Norway Lobsters, both sexes are treated separately. Simulations were carried out according to 3 types of data: Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort variations. Norway Lobster vessels mesh increase. Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort decrease or mesh increasing go along in the same direction for Hake and Norway Lobster stock production (chart A and B). Lastly, a brief study on results evaluation significance was done to modify: - the size of Hake rejects by Norway Lobster vessels. The range of sizes stays the same but the amount in each class varies according to the same percentage. - Norway Lobsters growth parameters, both values used (L» = 76 mm and k = 0.11 for males, L°° = 56 mm and k = 0.14 for females) representing the "high" hypothesis. In the first case, a 20% error rate for rejects evaluation with 60 mm mesh would only bring a 3% modification rate on global stock production. Those first results are contradicting usual evaluation conclusions and it will be necessary to recalculate by modifying the size class step. In the second case, to decrease L» and increase growth speed, in time production variations remain within usual inter annual fluctuations. In all figure cases, calculations confirming greater yield for in time production through hypothetical mesh size increase to 60 mm, are definitely well founded.
French Regional Nature Parks (RNP), created in 1967, can be considered as precursory sustainable development laboratories. Different initiatives dedicated to promote local development and draw benefits from the improved status of sustainably managed areas have been implemented in the RNP and among them a labelling policy through the development of RNP collective trademarks. In this article, we wonder about the consistency of this RNP labelling policy for the French overseas department of Martinique. According to our analytical references (local governance and collective action), we focus on the social dimension of sustainable development. Contribution à l'amélioration des survies et performances de reproduction de L. stylirostris en saison fraîche en Nouvelle-Calédonie Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Wabete, Nelly Lemaire, Pierrette Mailliez, Jean-rene Broutoi, Francis Chim, Liet Résumé : Since 1993, the New Caledonian shrimp industry has been faced with cold season mortality outbreaks of multifactorial origin. This pathology called “Syndrome 93” affects as well animals in grow-out ponds as broodstock after their transfer in maturation room, with up to 35% of mortality in 48 hours. From literature data and physiological studies on Litopenaeus stylirostris, several combinations of three abiotic parameters (temperature, salinity and feeding) have been tested during the breeders stocking period. This research allowed us to lower stress factors impact and to propose a transfer protocol which leads to an optimal physiological comfort of the animal. Results showed that survival rate is improved and spawning rates are twice higher. These findings have come up with a routine protocol of carrying out any transfer in a tank with water at temperature of 26°C, salinity of 26 ppt and no food supply during 48 hours. The use of this protocol in a commercial hatchery led to a significant broodstock survival improvement. A bio-economic model for the ecosystem-based management of the coastal fishery in French Guiana Auteur(s) : Cisse, Abdoul Gourguet, Sophie Doyen, L. Blanchard, Fabian Pereau, J. -c. Éditeur(s) : Cambridge Univ Press Résumé : This paper offers a theoritical and empirical model of ecosystem-based fishery management. A multi-species and multi-fleet integrating Lotka-Volterra trophic dynamics as well as production and profit assessments is developed and applied to the coastal fishery of French Guiana. This small-scale fishery constitutes a challenging example with high fish biodiversity, several non-selective fleets and a potentially increasing local food demand due to demographic growth. The dynamic model is calibrated with 13 species and four fleets using monthly catch and effort data from 2006 to 2009. Several contrasted fishing scenarios including status quo, total closure, economic and viable strategies are then simulated. They are compared from the viewpoints of both biodiversity preservation and socioeconomic performance, assuming fixed landing prices and fixed costs. We show that fishing outputs, including food supply and fleet profitability, can be sustained on average but a loss of species cannot be avoided. The European Union currently operates the second reform of its Common Fisheries Policy since its creation in 1970. Established to develop the fisheries and provide incomes for fishermen, the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) was directed gradually towards the protection of the species and the marine environment. To do this, it sacrificed a large part of the productive sector, but failed, and with the decline of fisheries in Europe, the outermost regions of the Caribbean gained relative importance in this field. They now account for nearly 30% of the national fleet and the Malthusians bases of the CFP are not suited any more to their characteristics: fisheries resources, economic development, jobs, security of food supply, etc. The ongoing reform, which should be in force before 2012, may offer an alternative to the outermost regions of the Caribbean for the implementation of specific measures under Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
