L'intégration animale et végétale comme facteur favorisant les performances des systèmes polyculture élevage ; Mixed farming systems assessment according to crop livestock integration : case studies in Guadeloupe (FWI) Auteur(s) : Franchone, Audrey Année de publication : Loading the player... Éditeur(s) : INRA : Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique Université des Antilles. Service commun de la documentation Extrait de : 52e congrès annuel de la Société caribéenne des plantes alimentaires / 52nd annual meeting of the Caribbean food crops society (CFCS), du 10 au 16 juillet 2016. INRA, CFCS Description : In the new context of the agro-ecological transition, present agricultural systems will have to produce more and better in a more constraint world. Mixed crop livestock systems (MCLS) represent sound alternative ways to progressively achieve these goals through crop-livestock integration (CLI). CLI exploits the synergies between cropping and livestock systems through organic fertilization with manure or plant association, use of crop residues to feed livestock, .... It offers many opportunities to improve productivity, as well as to increase resource use efficiency and improve the resilience of the whole farming system. In the scientific literature, authors advocate the interest of MLCS and CLI, based on theoretical considerations, modelling and empirical evidence from local case studies. But these studies do not clearly identify the respective roles of diversity of activities and CLI management practices in improving performances at the level of the whole farming system. Our aim was thus to assess CLI at farm scale in a range of MCLS and to explain farm performances by analyzing the combination of activities and the level of integration. We conducted our analyses in Guadeloupe, (French West Indies), where MCLS and CLI are complex but important challenges for local agricultural. In order to analyze CLI in a holistic and systemic way, we applied a method traditionally used in ecology, ecological network analysis, to study the structure, functioning and performance of agrosystems. This method was implemented on a range of Guadeloupian MCLS where CLI practices where identified. Nitrogen was retained to conduct the analysis due to its central role for both animal and vegetal productions. The ENA method allows an estimation of productivity, resilience, efficiency, productivity and self- sufficiency of the flows network. Our results show that 1/ efficiency and resilience appear correlated to the complexity and intensity of the network of flows; 2/ efficiency and resiliency are positively correlated when we consider them in terms of N flows; 3/ in the Guadeloupian context, CLI concerns mainly specific practices, as feeding pigs with a wide range of crop residues and organic fertilization of small market gardens and plots used to grow tubers. But at whole system level, CLI remains rare and mainly depends on conventional management practices as mineral fertilization and animal complementation of some farming activities as sugar cane, cattle breeding and banana. Moreover, the combination of productions implemented determines the potential of CLI and related performances linked to relative N efficiency of each production. Consequently, performance and especially efficiency and self-sufficiency depend more on the nature of the activity than on CLI management practices. There is still a gap between theoretical studies and CLI in practice, even though CLI is more complicated than simple flows and provides other services and functions. Université des Antilles Description : This research will unveil the tensions between international, regional, and local interests which drove colonial officials and merchants on St. Thomas, St. Eustatius, Dutch St. Maarten, St. Bartholomew, and Saba to engage in illegal trade and logistical relations with privateers, pirates, and slave trading vessels between 1816-1840. Along with an analysis of eastern Caribbean trade networks through surviving shipping records, extensive government correspondence, court records, and accounts in historic newspapers from the region, this will subsequently permit insights into how the shifting bounds and tolerances of legal and illicit trade by colonial officials on these islands fostered a smuggling and laundering ring for ships, goods, and people engaged in privateering, piracy during the Latin American Wars of Independence and the later Cisplatine War, and the post-abolition slave trade. By understanding the processes involved in smuggling and laundering illegal prizes by privateers and pirates, direct evidence these activities can become visible in the archaeological record through a predictive model based upon local practices of intentionally sinking illegally captured ships. Diffusion in Dynamic Social Networks: Application in Epidemiology Auteur(s) : Stattner, Erick Collard, Martine Vidot, Nicolas Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Springer Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience Structure and evolution of networks have been areas of growing interest in recent years, especially with the emergence of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and its application in numerous fields. Researches on diffusion are focusing on network modeling for studying spreading phenomena. While the impact of network properties on spreading is now widely studied, involvement of network dynamicity is very little known. In this paper, we address the epidemiology context and study the consequences of network evolutions on spread of diseases. Experiments are conducted by comparing incidence curves obtained by evolution strategies applied on two generated and two real networks. Results are then analyzed by investigating network properties and discussed in order to explain how network evolution influences the spread. We present the MIDEN framework, an approach to measure impact of basic changes in network structure, and DynSpread, a 2D simulation tool designed to replay infections scenarios on evolving networks. In the study area, 251 snails belonging to 12 populations were collected along different ditches of a same river network. Each snail was genotyped at six variable microsatellite loci. Our results show that all sample sites are characterized by a low level of polymorphism and a very high and significant heterozygote deficiency. Our data reveal a significant genetic differentiation, even at a small scale, and failed to delimit clear patterns of isolation by euclidian distance. Our study shows that genetic differentiation significantly increases with hydrographic distance along the streams (p < 0.002), in consistence with the hypothesis that dispersion along the stream is dependent on the direction of water flow. This study shows that relationships can exist between the organization of the hydrological network and population biology of a disease vector, which has strong potential applications to drainage network management issues. Contributions to the study of social networks : propagation, mining, data collection ; Contributions à l'étude des réseaux sociaux : propagation, fouille, collecte de données Auteur(s) : Stattner, Erick Auteurs secondaires : Ingénierie des données et connaissances ; Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Université des Antilles-Guyane Martine Collard(martine.collard@univ-ag.fr) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : The concept of network provides a model for representing a wide variety of objects and systems, both natural and social, in which a set of homogeneous or heterogeneous entities interact. It is now widely used to describe various kinds of relational structures. However, if everyone has an idea of the concept of network, we often ignore the implications that these structures have in real world phenomena. This is for example the case of processes such as the spread of a rumor, the disease transmission, or even the emergence of subjects of common interest for a group of individuals, in which the relations maintained between individuals, and their nature, often prove to be the main factors determining the evolution of the phenomenon. This is the reason why the study of networks has become one of the emerging areas in the 21st century called the "Science of networks." In this thesis, we address three issues of the domain of the science of networks: the problem of diffusion in social networks, where we have addressed more particularly the impact of the network dynamics on the diffusion process, the problem of the analysis of social networks, in which we have proposed a solution to take full advantage of all information available on the network by combining information on both structure and node attributes and the central problem of the social data collection, for which we have focused on the particular case of the data collection in a wild environment.
Societal need for improved understanding of climate change, anthropogenic impacts, and geo-hazard warning drive development of ocean observatories in European Seas Auteur(s) : Ruhl, Henry A. Andre, Michel Beranzoli, Laura Cagatay, M. Namik Colaco, Ana Cannat, Mathilde Danobeitia, Juanjo J. Favali, Paolo Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Society's needs for a network of in situ ocean observing systems cross many areas of earth and marine science. Here we review the science themes that benefit from data supplied from ocean observatories. Understanding from existing studies is fragmented to the extent that it lacks the coherent long-term monitoring needed to address questions at the scales essential to understand climate change and improve geo-hazard early warning. Data sets from the deep sea are particularly rare with long-term data available from only a few locations worldwide. These science areas have impacts on societal health and well-being and our awareness of ocean function in a shifting climate. Substantial efforts are underway to realise a network of open-ocean observatories around European Seas that will operate over multiple decades. Some systems are already collecting high-resolution data from surface, water column, seafloor, and sub-seafloor sensors linked to shore by satellite or cable connection in real or near-real time, along with samples and other data collected in a delayed mode. We expect that such observatories will contribute to answering major ocean science questions including: How can monitoring of factors such as seismic activity, pore fluid chemistry and pressure, and gas hydrate stability improve seismic, slope failure, and tsunami warning? What aspects of physical oceanography, biogeochemical cycling, and ecosystems will be most sensitive to climatic and anthropogenic change? What are natural versus anthropogenic changes? Most fundamentally, how are marine processes that occur at differing scales related? The development of ocean observatories provides a substantial opportunity for ocean science to evolve in Europe. Here we also describe some basic attributes of network design. Observatory networks provide the means to coordinate and integrate the collection of standardised data capable of bridging measurement scales across a dispersed area in European Seas adding needed certainty to estimates of future oceanic conditions. Observatory data can be analysed along with other data such as those from satellites, drifting floats, autonomous underwater vehicles, model analysis, and the known distribution and abundances of marine fauna in order to address some of the questions posed above. Standardised methods for information management are also becoming established to ensure better accessibility and traceability of these data sets and ultimately to increase their use for societal benefit. The connection of ocean observatory effort into larger frameworks including the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and the Global Monitoring of Environment and Security (GMES) is integral to its success. It is in a greater integrated framework that the full potential of the component systems will be realised. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Contamination chimique du milieu marin : de la mesure à l'évaluation des risques Auteur(s) : Abarnou, Alain Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : This activity report entitled (“Chemical contamination of the marine environment: from measurement to risk assessment”) summarizes the main stages my career at Ifremer from November 1975 to june 2013. The first chapter deals with the seawater chlorination and chlorinated waters released into the sea, the identification and the conditions of the formation of various by-product of these processes. The second chapter concerns PCBs, their nature, their chemical analysis in environmental matrices. PCBs are considered as the best examples of persistant and bioaccumulable compounds and therefore, in all this report they are flagship contaminants to which other groups of studied substances are compared. The third chapter refers to studies performed within marine pollution monitoring programme RNO (Réseau National d’Observation de la qualité de l’environnement marin - National observation network on the quality of the marine environnment) and well as other more limited studies like a first assessement on the presence of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in the French coastal marine environment and last, on the use of zebra mussel (Dresseinia polymorpha) as sentinelle species of the chemical contamination in the Seine estuary. The next two chapters are about bioaccumulation and about the distribution of organic contaminants (PCBs, dioxins, PAHs, PBDEs) in marine organisms and in marine foodwebs. These studies aim at a better knowledge of the presence and fate of these compounds in fish and marine organisms eitheir in an environmental perspective (chapter IV) or in order to contribute to the assessment of their health impact, or more precisely to estimate therelative part of fish and seafood to the human exposure to chemical residues (chapter V). To conclude, the chapter VI concerns the PCB and dioxin fingerprints in the various studied marine matrices ; analytical and environmental interpretations of the observed differences are suggested as well as possible applications. Link formation in a telecommunication network Auteur(s) : Stattner, Erick Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) IEEE Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience Traditional network generation models aim to replicate global structural properties observed on various real-world networks (power law degree distribution, short average distance, community structure, etc.) through synthetic link formation mechanisms such as triadic closure or preferential attachment. Nowadays the large amount of data available allows to study more precisely the link formation processes and to compare the models to real situations. In this work, we analyse the communication activities of the users of a mobile telephony operator for studying the link formation process. The communications emitted and received by users are strong indicators for understanding the underlying mechanisms of the link formation process and highlighting how user attributes correlate with the formation process in such a network. In a first study conducted at a global level we show that the traditional mechanisms commonly used in network generation models are not the main link formation mechanisms involved in this network. In a second study, we analyse more precisely the link formation process by searching for correlations between some user attributes and the formation of the new links. These results provide valuable guidelines to the design of more realistic generation models taking into account network structure and node attributes. Auteur(s) : Leguerrier, Dephine Éditeur(s) : Université de la Rochelle Résumé : In order to better understand the functioning of the Brouage intertidal mudflat (Marennes- Oléron Basin, France), its carbon-based trophic web has been modelled and analyzed. The foodweb building is based on the 4 step method of Inverse Analysis: 1) conceive an a priori model as the graph of compartments (nodes) between which exist fluxes of material (vertices). These vertices are the unknowns for the problem; 2) gather all the existing knowledge about the ecosystem and translate it into linear equations and inequalities involving the fluxes; 3) complete this set of data by common knowledge on the behaviour of the compartments and translate it into inequalities, 4) solve the obtained linear system under the parsimony principle to find a unique solution vector. The food-web analysis is based on. The first purpose of this work was a methodological one: inverse analysis method has been adapted to consider the seasonal and spatial variability of the temperate ecosystem: two seasons have been coupled in the computation and the area has been divided into three geographical zones along a cross-shore gradient. Hence, two types of physical exchanges are involved: the benthicpelagic ones and the advection ones. Statistical results can also be obtained by coupling Monte Carlo methods to Inverse Analysis. To study the obtained networks, new indices based on Markov Chains take delay into account in describing integrative transfers of material between compartments. This lets emerge the systems' properties that are not obvious at first sight and emphasizes the role of peculiar components. The second purpose was to apply such methods to the Brouage mudflat ecosystem in order to better understand its functioning. As the knowledge and methods evolve, various food webs were computed and analyzed with the help such indices and existing ones. Sensitivity analyses allow to point at the most crucial lacks of knowledge, which can orientate future field research. New data would improve the quality of the model in two ways: one the one hand, they would validate or invalidate the outcomes and on the other hand, they would give useful information to better constrain some of the black boxes and most uncertain fluxes, especially the advection and vertical flows. The main results of the study show a strongly seasonal system in which benthic and pelagic components are linked with intensity. The system is driven by its high local benthic primary production, but also depends on imports from the basin. Each of the 3 geographic zones has a peculiar functioning. The central zone corresponds to the classical description of European intertidal mudflats: very productive, it can feed the other regions. It is a production zone. The upper part is less productive but is fed by the middle one via the water column and can be exploited by shorebirds. It is a degradation zone (material is transformed for less qualitative). The lower part strongly depends on the basin imports for its functioning, as the cultivated bivalves act as a pump for pelagic material of which a great part is deposited under the cultivation structures (oyster racks or mussels "bouchots"). It is a transformation zone. International audience The problem addressed in this paper is the automatic extraction of names from a document image. Our approach relies on the combination of two complementary analyses. First, the image-based analysis exploits visual clues to select the regions of interest in the document. Second, the textual-based analysis searches for name patterns and low-level word textual features. Both analyses are then combined at the word level through a neural network fusion scheme. Reported results on degraded documents such as facsimile and photocopied technical journals demonstrate the interest of the combined approach. We analyse teleseismic data from 21 stations forming the temporary Young Conjugate Margins Laboratory (YOCMAL) network together with GFZ and Yemeni permanent stations. Analysis of computed receiver functions shows that (1) the thickness of unextended crust on the Yemen plateau is ∼35km; (2) this thins to ∼22km in coastal areas and reaches less than 14km on the Red Sea coast, where presence of a high-velocity lower crust is evident. The average Vp/Vs ratio for the western Yemen Plateau is 1.79, increasing to ∼1.92 near the Red Sea coast and decreasing to 1.68 for those stations located on or near the granitic rocks. Thinning of the crust, and by inference extension, occurs over a ∼130-km-wide transition zone from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden coasts to the edges of the Yemen plateau. Thinning of continental crust is particularly localized in a <30-km-wide zone near the coastline, spatially co-incident with addition of magmatic underplate to the lower crust, above which on the surface we observe the presence of seaward dipping reflectors (SDRs) and thickened Oligo-Miocene syn-rift basaltic flows. Our results strongly suggest the presence of high-velocity mafic intrusions in the lower crust, which are likely either synrift magmatic intrusion into continental lower crust or alternatively depleted upper mantle underplated to the base of the crust during the eruption of the SDRs. Our results also point towards a regional breakup history in which the onset of rifting was synchronous along the western Gulf of Aden and southern Red Sea volcanic margins followed by a second phase of extension along the Red Sea margin. Tracking innovative cropping systems designed by farmers ; Systèmes de culture innovants conçus par les agriculteurs Auteur(s) : Meynard, Jean-Marc Année de publication : Loading the player... Éditeur(s) : INRA : Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique Université des Antilles. Service commun de la documentation Caribbean Food Crops Society (CFCS) Extrait de : 52e congrès annuel de la Société caribéenne des plantes alimentaires / 52nd annual meeting of the Caribbean food crops society (CFCS), du 10 au 16 juillet 2016. INRA, CFCS Description : Farmers are very inventive, but their innovations often remain confined to their farm, or to small local networks. And the interest they might have for farmers other than their inventors is seldom analyzed. Tracking on-farm innovations aims at finding technical or organizational innovations designed by farmers, to characterize their agronomic, economic and environmental performance and analyze the conditions in which this performance is expressed. The talk presents the various stages of this tracking approach, applied to innovative cropping systems, basing on a variety of recent works, in France, Argentine, Burkina Faso and China: (1) Defining what we are looking for; (2) Identifying innovative systems; (3) Describing and characterizing innovative systems; (4) Assessing innovative systems; (5) Specifying the conditions for the success of innovative systems. The results of the tracking are aimed not only at the farmers, but at their advisors and researchers too: (i) Innovative and effective cropping systems, which can be a source of inspiration for farmers; (ii) Confirmation of the interest of a principle for reasoning cropping systems; (iii) Innovative practices, analyzed within a systemic framework, which can serve as bricks for the design of new systems; (iv) Questions to be looked into more thoroughly by experimentation. Compared to traditional approaches in agronomy, tracking innovative cropping systems provides a double break: break with a top-down approach, where agricultural R & D is regarded as the only source of innovation: by mobilizing the innovative capacities of farmers, tracking increases our collective capacity to invent new practices or new cropping systems, by using not only technical and scientific knowledge, but also the empirical knowledge, that is so rich in agriculture. And break with the primacy given to experimentation, as a source for the production of knowledge and the assessment of innovations. Wireless sensor networks is one of the hotest research topic in the last few years. This technology can be applied for different fields such as environment, industry, trading, medicine, military etc. Wireless sensor networks are hard to conceive because they require a lot of energy and because each of its component may have an influence on the lifetime of the whole system. What we suggest is a tool allowing to choose the correct and optimal parameters for the reliability of the applications. In this thesis, we focused on two major problems : firstly, a classification of the parameters for a tool allowing to make decisions about the configuration of a wireless sensors network, and secondly, a tool testing the compliance of the system with a real environment. The document is divided into two parts : the first part states the different protocols that exist, and the second part describes our contributions to those topics. In the first contribution, we analyzed how influential the radio cover and the network topology are on the network performances. Then, we deduced from the study of the loss rate and of the level of energy, the reliability of the application. Next, we suggested a study leading to a classification for our decision making tool. For this classification, we studied various parameters related to the MAC layer, the Physical layer, the network layer, the application layer the number of nodes involved in the network. In the second contribution, we adopted a pragmatic approach so we could test the conformity of a wireless sensors network in a real environment. In order to test its conformity in a real environment, we suggested a structured test execution on a real wireless sensor network. This task has been suggested in order to check the conformance level of the network while it was working. http://www.theses.fr/2012AGUY0586/document | Partager |

Link Clustering for Extracting Collaborative Patterns in a Scientific Co-Authored Network Auteur(s) : Stattner, Erick Collard, Martine Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) IEEE ACM Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience In this article, we analyse a collaborative network to understand the underlying patterns that structure the co-writing process of scientific articles. Our goal is to identify and understand the collaboration tendencies from authors publishing activities. For this purpose, we adopt a descriptive modelling through a network approach that consists first in generating the collaborative network from data on publications. Nodes of the network are then enriched with a set of individual attributes extracted from the publishing activity of each author. Finally, we search for conceptual views, a recent link clustering approach, which allows to summarize any kind of networks by highlighting the sets of attributes found frequently linked. Results show that it exists strong tendencies that unconsciously structure the collaboration behaviours. In this paper, we present these tendencies and show how they evolve according to different extraction thresholds. The theoretical debate on migration and family is ambivalent. Migration can be seen from an “individualist’’ and distant logic of the family or, on the other hand, migration can be viewed as a strategy of survival for the family network. It is in the objective of contributing to this debate, the present article will analyze the migration process from a migrant strategy perspective, more specifically from the perspective of the “Hloua” migrants off the Benin coast. Four dimensions are of particular interest: the decision making process, the cost and organization of the trip, integration in the host community and the maintenance of relations with the host community. Within a large scale research on poverty and the strategies of survival of artisan fishing (Avloh, Ayiguinnou et Agoué) in Bénin, the present analysis is based on migration stories collected from returning migrants or from family members still living in the village. This story analysis has been completed with quantitative analyses on the frequency of the use of organization and decision making, the frequency of the use of residential and professional insertion, and the amount of remittances. The results show the central place of family ties during the migratory process from the start of the decision making process, the travel planning, the entrusting of the women and children of the migrant, to the residential establishment and the professional insertion in the host society. This network organizes and structures efficiently the migratory phenomenon by intervening during the decisive steps. However, once inserted, the connections maintained with the family network are limited for the majority to an affective solidarity characterized by telephone contacts or message transfers, and sometimes remittances sent back largely lower to the family’s expectations. This results more and more in the migrant diminishing the social capital of the family without always contributing in some substantially way on the financial side. A paradox which could find its explanation in future researches under a perspective of migrations’ dynamics. Real Time Drunkness Analysis Through Games Using Artificial Neural Networks Auteur(s) : Robinel, Audrey Puzenat, Didier Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience In this paper, we describe a blood alcohol content estimation prototype based on a comportment analysis performed by artificial neural networks. We asked to subjects that had drunk alcohol to play a video-game after having measured their blood alcohol content with a breathalyser. A racing game was modified so that it could provide various data related to the use of the controls by the player. Using the collected data, we trained our neural network in order to be able to determine whether or not the subject had exceeded a blood alcohol content threshold. We also succeeded in estimating this blood alcohol content with a mean error of 0.1g/l. We could perform those estimations independently of the track played among the two ones used. It was also performed in "real time", e.g., using only the data collected within the last 10 seconds of playing. Approche sectorielle subtidale : Identification et caractérisation des habitats benthiques du secteur Glénan (Réseau de surveillance benthique - Région Bretagne) Auteur(s) : Ehrhold, Axel Blanchet, Aline Hamon, Dominique Résumé : Ifremer launched and coordinated the development of a strategy for the REBENT network (REseau BENThique) in 2000 to monitor the aftermath of the "Erika" oil spill in December 1999. Its aim is to provide consistent baseline knowledge about coastal benthic habitats and constitute a monitoring tool to detect changes at various scales over time and space. Sector-based seabed habitat mapping in shallow water (< 50 m deep), is currently being conducted throughout Brittany's coastal waters through a combination of geoacoustic marine systems and ground-truthing using biological grab sampling and seabed observations.
Sedimentological and biological results on Glenan area emphasize a great diversity of subtidal habitats and marine species recognized. Sidescan imagery accentuates the complexity of the communities structure in a marine environment distinguished by strong and regulary roughness of the sea. Maerl biocenose is present at the nord-east of the archipelago. Progressively it gives way to mud sediment colonized by Amphiura filiformis and Haploops in the deeper channel. To the west and the south, substratum types are more coarse, occasionally mobiles, composed of essentially sand community with Nephtys and gravelly sand community with Branchiostoma lanceolatum.
Unity and disunity in evolutionary sciences: process-based analogies open common research avenues for biology and linguistics Auteur(s) : List, Johann-Mattis Sylvestre Pathmanathan, Jananan Lopez, Philippe Bapteste, Eric Auteurs secondaires : Evolution Paris Seine ; Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS) ; Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) CRLAO/EHESS Paris Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD BioMed Central Résumé : International audience BackgroundFor a long time biologists and linguists have been noticing surprising similarities between the evolution of life forms and languages. Most of the proposed analogies have been rejected. Some, however, have persisted, and some even turned out to be fruitful, inspiring the transfer of methods and models between biology and linguistics up to today. Most proposed analogies were based on a comparison of the research objects rather than the processes that shaped their evolution. Focusing on process-based analogies, however, has the advantage of minimizing the risk of overstating similarities, while at the same time reflecting the common strategy to use processes to explain the evolution of complexity in both fields.ResultsWe compared important evolutionary processes in biology and linguistics and identified processes specific to only one of the two disciplines as well as processes which seem to be analogous, potentially reflecting core evolutionary processes. These new process-based analogies support novel methodological transfer, expanding the application range of biological methods to the field of historical linguistics. We illustrate this by showing (i) how methods dealing with incomplete lineage sorting offer an introgression-free framework to analyze highly mosaic word distributions across languages; (ii) how sequence similarity networks can be used to identify composite and borrowed words across different languages; (iii) how research on partial homology can inspire new methods and models in both fields; and (iv) how constructive neutral evolution provides an original framework for analyzing convergent evolution in languages resulting from common descent (Sapir’s drift).ConclusionsApart from new analogies between evolutionary processes, we also identified processes which are specific to either biology or linguistics. This shows that general evolution cannot be studied from within one discipline alone. In order to get a full picture of evolution, biologists and linguists need to complement their studies, trying to identify cross-disciplinary and discipline-specific evolutionary processes. The fact that we found many process-based analogies favoring transfer from biology to linguistics further shows that certain biological methods and models have a broader scope than previously recognized. This opens fruitful paths for collaboration between the two disciplines.
