Résumé : The hydrothermal vent shrimp genus Mirocaris is reviewed. Morphological comparison between the two nominal species in the genus, M. fortunata and M. keldyshi, was made based on the re-examination of the holotype and paratypes of Mirocarisfortunata and the paratypes of M. keldyshi. Samples newly collected from various sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge were also examined. The validity of the genus Mirocaris has been confirmed. However, our study has revealed that the supposed morphological characters distinguishing M. fortunata and M. keldyshi do not provide significant taxonomic differences and further comparison failed to detect morphological differences between the two taxa. Thus M. keldyshi is synonymized with M. fortunata, and so there is only one single species in the genus Mirocaris. This supports the suggestion by Shank et al. (1999), based on a molecular study, that the two taxa might be conspecific. A redescription of M. fortunata is provided to better establish the morphology of the species. The clarification led us to improve the morphological descriptions of the caridean species associated with vent or seep environments and to reassess the relationships among Mirocaris and the other shrimp taxa in the superfamily Bresilioidea. The generic diagnosis of Mirocaris is emended. Because a number of presumably apomorphic characters are shared by Mirocaris and other alvinocaridid genera, the genus Mirocaris is now assigned to the family Alvinocarididae. The family Mirocarididae is synonymized with the Alvinocarididae and the diagnosis of this family is emended.
Révision du genre Mirocaris, crevette des sources hydrothermales océaniques, redescription de M. fortunata et réexamen du statut de la famille des Alvinocarididae. Le genre Mirocaris, créé pour des crevettes hydrothermales, est révisé. Une étude morphologique comparative des deux espèces Mirocaris fortunata et M. keldyshi, basée sur le réexamen des holo-types et paratypes et sur l'étude de nombreux échantillons provenant de divers sites hydrothermaux de la dorsale médio-atlantique, a été effectuée. La validité du genre Mirocaris est confirmée. Il apparaît que les caractères qui distinguent M. keldyshi et M.fortunata ne sont pas des critères taxonomiques suffisants et une étude morphologique plus poussée n'a pas révélé de différences morphologiques entre les deux taxa. Ceci est en accord avec l'interprétation de Shank et al. (1999) qui, à la suite d'une étude moléculaire, suggèrent la synonymie des deux espèces. Une redescription détaillée de M. fortunata est donnée et les relations entre Mirocaris et les autres genres de la superfamille des Bresilioidea sont discutées. La diagnose générique de Mirocaris est modifiée. Comme plusieurs caractères apomorphes sont partagés par Mirocaris et les autres genres de la famille des Alvinocarididae, le genre Mirocaris est maintenant affecté à cette famille. La famille des Mirocarididae est mise en synonymie avec celle des Alvinocarididae dont la diagnose est modifiée.

This study deals with temporal variations in eel diet Anguilla anguilla sampled at each of the four seasons in the Languedocian Prévost lagoon (Gulf of Lion) from Autumn 1998 to Summer 1999. The following feeding indices were calculated based on observations of 12 categories of prey found in the contents of full stomachs: coefficient of vacuity CV, degree of fullness DR, occurrence frequency PP, relative abundance N (in %) and relative weight P (in %). The interpretation of results is also based on the Costello's method (1990) which combines PP and N. Anguilla anguilla mainly feeds on benthic organisms, primarily Gammarus gr. locusta, Polychaeta, insect larvae, small fish. Based on variations in eel diet, seasonal influence is illustrated by a decrease in feeding activity in summer which gradually increases during the following seasons. The good trophic quality available to eels in the Prévost lagoon depends on its hydrodynamics which is directly related to the movement of water entering and leaving lagoon by a short communication with the sea. This water movement accelerates the enrichment and production processes of this ecosystem. Changes observed during the four seasons illustrate an opportunistic type of feeding behaviour. Eels consume the most available benthic prey. They favour the importance of the prey at a given moment without using a particular feeding strategy like specialisation or generalisation. Thus, eel adapts its diet in adjusting available energy resources in the ecosystem. Because of this, the lagoon-resident species Anguilla anguilla is an obvious indirect bioindicator of the trophic capacity and present level of confinement in the brackish water lagoon ecosystem of Prévost.

From fish samplings (rotenone: 6 February 2002 & 13 May 2003; boxtraps: January 2008 to July 2009) in amangrove lagoon, the demographic structure, reproductive period and diet of Lophogobius cyprinoides were studied.Individual fish were measured (< 1 mm), weighed (± 0.01 g), and sexed by observing the urogenital papilla, sex-ratios andtotal length (TL)-standard length and length-mass relationships were calculated. Five individuals per size class (2 mm) wereused to study sexual maturity by macroscopic observation of gonad structure with a sexual maturity scale, and diet byqualitative and quantitative examination of digestive tract contents and calculation of the following indices: levels offullness and vacuity; occurrence, number, and point frequencies of various food items, and quality of nutrition. Growth isisometric and sexual dimorphism in favor of males (78 vs. 64 mm), demographic structure (18 ≤ TL ≤ 78 mm) and conditionevolved over time, with a distinct femininization of the population. Sexual inversion appeared from 46 mm onward, andtotal masculinization at 72 mm. Protogynous hermaphrodism is advantageous in a sedentary, subcryptobenthic species thatis reproductively active almost throughout the year. Résumé : The first record of interstitial polychaetous annelids dates no more than forty years. Presently, the total number of interstitial species described is about one hundred. Up to the present, the large group of Aphroditoidea includes no interstitial representative. A few samples made by Pr Swedmark and M. Lasserre in Bermudas enable the discovery of an undescribed species of an interstitial Sigalionidae, Pholoe swedmarki Sp. n., together with two other interstitial species of Pisionidae and Syllidae, new to the western tropical atlantic. From a morphological point of view, the comparison of P. swedmarki sp. n. with the other species of the genus reveals some adaptations to the interstitial life: reduction of the body size, reduction or, at the contrary, enlargement of some appendages of the anterior part, lack of pigmentation. From the biological point of view, P. swedmarki sp. n. displays a remarkable group of characteristics : extreme reduction of the eggs numbers, extension of the reproductive period, pregnancy of the embryos and juveniles up to a very late ontogenetical stage. The hypothesis of an intra-elytral pregnancy, involving an internal fertilization, is discussed. By its morphology and biology, P. swedmarki sp. n. forms the first undeniable example of adaptation to the interstitial life among the Aphroditoidea. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
La découverte des premières Annélides Polychètes interstitielles remonte à peine à une quarantaine d'années. A l'heure actuelle, le nombre total d'espèces interstitielles décrites est de l'ordre d'une centaine. Jusqu'à présent, le vaste groupe des Aphroditoidea ne comprenait aucun représentant interstitiel. Quelques récoltes effectuées aux Bermudes par le Pr Swedmark et M. Lasserre ont permis de découvrir une espèce inédite de Sigalionidae interstitiel, Pholoe swedmarki sp. n., en compagnie de deux autres espèces de Pisionidae et de Syllidae interstitielles encore inconnues dans l'Atlantique tropical Ouest. Sur le plan morphologique, la comparaison de P. swedmarki sp. n. avec les autres espèces du genre met en évidence un certain nombre d'adaptations à la vie interstitielle : réduction de la taille du corps, réduction ou, au contraire, développement de certains appendices de la région antérieure, absence de pigmentation. Du point de vue biologique, P. swedmarki sp. n. présente un ensemble d'adaptations remarquables : réduction extrême du nombre d'oeufs, allongement de la période de reproduction, gestation des embryons et des jeunes vers jusqu'à un stade ontogénétique très avancé. L'hypothèse d'une gestation intra-élytrale, impliquant une fécondation interne, est avancée. Par sa morphologie et sa biologie, P. swedmarki sp. n. constitue le premier exemple incontestable d'adaptation à la vie interstitielle chez un Aphroditoidea. [OCR NON CONTRÔLE]

Four "morphotypes" of Mytilidae were collected from wood falls in the west Pacific (Vanuatu islands) and in the Bohol sea (Philippines) between 300 and 1800 metre depth. Results from our study demonstrated the existence of extracellular bacteria located between microvilli at the apical surface of the cells all along the lateral zone of the gill filaments in the four mytilid morphotypes analyzed. Based on TEM observations, these Gram-negative bacteria were not methanotrophic due to the lack of concentric stacking of intracellular membranes in their cytoplasm. Based on FISH experiments, these bacteria belong to g-Proteobacteria. These preliminary observations described gill symbiosis-like interactions in metazoan species associated with sunken wood, strengthening the hypothesis that decomposing wood may serve as steps for the introduction of symbiotic Mytilidae to vents and seeps. Phylogenetic analysis of these extracellular bacteria are in progress in our lab in order to compare their 16SrDNA sequences to that of other marine invertebrate symbionts described to date.

The embryonic development of Tivela mactroides, from fertilization to straight-hinge veliger D-stage larva occurs in 18 hours at 25°C. Scanning electronic observations show that morphogenetic processes result in a gastrula with two depressions 4 hours after fertilization (T0 + 4h). Two hours later, one depression, located at the animal pole, develops into an open cave, the floor of which becomes the shell field located below the lower face of the prototrochal pad. The invagination located at the vegetal pole features the blastopore. At T0 + 6h, the late gastrula has differentiated into a typical motile trochophore with a shell field synthetizing the organic part of the shell. At T0 + 8h, the shell field, located between the prototroch and the telotroch, appears as a saddle-shaped region with a wrinkled surface extending on both sides of the embryo, establishing bilateral symmetry. At T0 + 12h, the prototroch slides toward the anterior region by outgrowth of the shell material. At T0 + 18h, the prodissoconch I formation is completed and the D-stage larvae possess a calcified shell. At this stage of development, the functional velum is composed of four bands of cilia. Our observations seem to confirm the interpretation of shell differentiation proposed recently by Mouëza et al. (2006) for bivalves even if Transmission Electronic observations will be necessary to validate definitively such a model in the Meretricinae sub-family.

This study focuses on the diet of the eel Anguilla anguilla, sampled during one month of each of the four seasons from autumn 1998 to summer 1999 in the Languedocian Ingril Lagoon (Gulf ot Lion). The following feeding indices were calculated based on observations of 11 categories of prey found in the contents of full stomachs: coefficient of vacuity (CV), degree of fullness (DR), occurrence frequency (PP, in %), relative abundance (N, in %) and relative weight (P, in %). A parallel monitoring of the benthic macrofauna was conducted in autumn and spring. The interpretation of the results is based on the degree III of the scale of confinement established by Guélorget & Perthuisot (1983) and on the Costello et al. (1990) method, which combines PP and N. A. anguilla mainly feeds on benthic organisms, primarily amphipods crustaceans, polychaetes, insect larvae and small fish. The eel's feeding activity is very low in November and February and usually increases during May. The trophic quality available to the eel population in the Ingril Lagoon depends on its hydrodynamic variables, which are directly related to its close communication with the sea. Changes observed in the eel's diet over this year long study illustrate an opportunist type of feeding behaviour that reflects the typical composition of the macroinvertebrate species assemblage at a given point in time. Eels consume the type of benthic prey that is most available at a given moment without using a particular feeding strategy (e.g., specialisation or generalisation). The eels adapt by shifting their diet according to the energetic resources available in the ecosystem, which vary depending on hydrological regime. Thus, the facultative catadromous migrant species Anguilla anguilla could be used as a bioindicator of changes in the biological zonation and in the available food resources in the brackish ecosystem of Ingril Lagoon during its lagoon-resident ecophase.
