Description : French Overseas Départements are no longer islands as far as their economy is concerned : costs of transatlantic transportation has become too low to provide local productions with sufficient protection. The growth of local unemployment is a threat today for these societies. Producing new goods or services for export seems hardly conceivable for the time being, as french Overseas departments did not find any comparative advantage so far. So, recovering domestic market seems the only way to get jobs. But such a policy would require that would be allowed to raise customs to protect their domestic market : a change for a new status in E.U. law would be necessary, and these ultraperipherical regions would have to be changed into overseas countries and territories.

Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location.
Boats and ocean liners anchored in Saint George’s harbor, Grenada. A yacht with what appears to be the name Sans Souci is flying a United States of America and the Grenadan flag (1967-1974). In 1967 when Grenada became a British Associated State, it adopted a blue-yellow-green flag with a nutmeg in the center. The nutmeg represented Grenada’s position as the “Spice Isle” and is also featured on the Coat of Arms. This flag was used until 1974 when Grenada gained independence. Merchant Vessel (MV) Geestcape, partially pictured, entered service in 1966. In 1935, the Van Geest brothers in Spalding, United Kingdom started a horticultural business. The brothers later expanded their business to include a cargo service to carry horticultural produce, primarily bananas, from the Windward and Leeward Islands to Europe. MV Geestcape is also flying the flag of the British Merchant Navy, a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper left corner. Motor Ship (MS) Renaissance, behind MV Geestcape, was built in 1966. Until 1977, Renaissance operated primarily on the Marseille-Haifa route under Compagnie Navigation de Paquet (Croiseres Paquet), Marseille, France. The cruise liner had many subsequent owners throughout her history, until her disposal in 2010. She is pictured here flying the French flag. In the distance overlooking the harbor is Fort George, Grenada’s oldest fort which was built by the French in 1705. Fort George continues (2013) to function as the headquarters for the Royal Grenada Police Force, which it has housed since 1854 when the Colonial Government took over control of the fort. Description : Le préjugé de couleur est définitivement aboli en 1833. En 1848, l'abolition de l'esclavage s'accompagne de l'élargissement du principe du sol libre aux colonies. Le nouvel empire colonial en train de naître sera alors un empire sans esclaves et (presque) sans préjugé de couleur, mais aussi un empire où liberté et citoyenneté ne vont pas de pair. La Révolution avait quant à elle affirmé, avec la loi des 28 septembre et 16 octobre 1791, que le principe du sol libre impliquait la citoyenneté, sans distinction de couleur : « Art. 1er : tout individu est libre sitôt qu'il est entré en France. Art. 2 : Tout homme, de quelque couleur qu'il soit, jouit en France de tous les droits du citoyen, s'il a les qualités prescrites par la Constitution pour les exercer ». C'est le destin de cette conjonction que l'on se propose d'esquisser ici, réaffirmée lors de l'abolition de 1794, aménagée en 1798, jusqu'au rétablissement de la Police des Noirs dans la foulée du rétablissement de l'esclavage en 1802.

Résumé : A YOUNG man, Compton Bowen of Bagotsville, West Bank Demerara, who was found wearing a miniskirt on Sunday was yesterday ordered to be sent to the Georgetown Hospital for psychiatric treatment. The order was made by Magistrate Aubrey Bishop when Bowen pleaded guilty to a charge of wearing female clothing for an improper purpose. The prosecutor, Sergeant Charles said that the Police were on patrol on Sunday morning. when they saw Bowen strolling along Water Street wearing a miniskirt and carrying a wallet. The prosecutor said that Bowen was twisting his waist from side to side like a female.

In the foreground are archaeologist Ripley Pierce Bullen and his wife, bioanthropologist Adelaide Kendall Bullen. Ripley Bullen was the curator emeritus at the Florida State Museum, currently the Florida Museum of Natural History, at the University of Florida. Adelaide Bullen was the Research Associate in Anthropology at the Florida State Museum. In the background of the restaurant is a painting of a Bahamian market scene which includes fruit, fish, straw vendors, shoppers, a police officer, and surrey carriage.
