Résumé : Reared sea bass were submitted to six stressful situations: hyperoxia with or without hypercapnia, increased stocking density in an open flow or recirculating system, transfer to another tank and nodavirus injection. The potentially negative impact of these factors on the lives of sea bass was investigated by measuring 9 water parameters and 19 fish parameters including total serum protein (TSP). TSP has already been used to evaluate stress. The present study investigates data of previous and new experiments, concentrating on the potential use of TSP as a routine indicator to assess welfare in sea bass reared on fish farms. In the current experiment, oxygen and carbon dioxide were seen to affect levels of TSP, but alterations were too erratic to enable proper comparison, probably because they are normal components of the fish environment and become toxic only by dose increase. TSP decreased when stocking density increased. After transfer to another tank, TSP decreased to 14% for three weeks and then increased during the fourth week through compensative overproduction, before returning to normal levels after 2 months. The results confirmed that transfer is an important stress factor for fish, with cumulative effects for successive transfers. TSP alteration of nodavirus-injected fish depends on the type of symptoms, which can be divided into 3 groups: (i) dying fish, in which TSP increased sharply due to over-production of protein involved in non-specific defences and inflammation, then decreased dramatically before death; (ii) whirling fish, a group that included both fish that later died, in which TSP decreased, and fish that subsequently survived, in which TSP increased due to development of specific immunity; and (iii) asymptomatic fish, in which TPS was similar to control levels and which were probably insensitive to nodavirus and/or had developed defences. In this paper, different mechanisms of TSP alteration are proposed and the interest of TSP as a field parameter is discussed. TSP is a non-destructive parameter that is robust, easy to measure everywhere and cheap, representing a suitable way of monitoring the overall welfare of fish by its regular increase. It can be used only as a "warning" of poor rearing conditions, however, and further investigations would be needed to identify the specific stress or health disorder.

Résumé : Background: Resolving threats to widely distributed marine megafauna requires definition of the geographic distributions of both the threats as well as the population unit(s) of interest. In turn, because individual threats can operate on varying spatial scales, their impacts can affect different segments of a population of the same species. Therefore, integration of multiple tools and techniques - including site-based monitoring, genetic analyses, mark-recapture studies and telemetry - can facilitate robust definitions of population segments at multiple biological and spatial scales to address different management and research challenges. Methodology/Principal Findings: To address these issues for marine turtles, we collated all available studies on marine turtle biogeography, including nesting sites, population abundances and trends, population genetics, and satellite telemetry. We georeferenced this information to generate separate layers for nesting sites, genetic stocks, and core distributions of population segments of all marine turtle species. We then spatially integrated this information from fine-to coarse-spatial scales to develop nested envelope models, or Regional Management Units (RMUs), for marine turtles globally. Conclusions/Significance: The RMU framework is a solution to the challenge of how to organize marine turtles into units of protection above the level of nesting populations, but below the level of species, within regional entities that might be on independent evolutionary trajectories. Among many potential applications, RMUs provide a framework for identifying data gaps, assessing high diversity areas for multiple species and genetic stocks, and evaluating conservation status of marine turtles. Furthermore, RMUs allow for identification of geographic barriers to gene flow, and can provide valuable guidance to marine spatial planning initiatives that integrate spatial distributions of protected species and human activities. In addition, the RMU framework - including maps and supporting metadata - will be an iterative, user-driven tool made publicly available in an online application for comments, improvements, download and analysis.

Résumé : A new programme concerning the experimentation of about thirty Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) is to start in the Cape Verde Islands at the end of 1999. In this context, this communication is intended: - to evaluate the halieutic, economic and social conditions of the artisanal fishery in this archipelago, notably in terms of assets and constraints. Although these conditions are very heterogeneous depending on islands, the fads seem to be able to help the stabilization and the development of the fishing activities, disadvantaged by a low productivity, limited operating ranges of boats, and very irregular outings at sea. But the narrowness of the domestic market is likely to cause drops in the fish prices if the production increases, while the absence of institutional framework may be a handicap at the level of the management (of the programme itself, and/or of some possible conflicts of uses); - to carry out an assessment of the former experiments. It emphasized the insufficiency of the follow-up and the maintenance of the structures, of which the lifespan varied at the most between four and six months, as well as the positive effects of the concentration, and the interest of the fishermen already sensitized with these structures.

Résumé : Overexploitation of marine resources remains a problem worldwide. Many works advocate for the use of marine reserves as a central element of future stock management in a sustainable perspective. In the present paper, we address the influence of protected areas upon fisheries sustainability within an eco-systemic framework through a dynamic bio-economic model integrating a trophic web, catches and environmental uncertainties. The model is spatially implicit. The evaluation of the ecosystem is designed through the respect along time of constraints of both conservation and guaranteed captures. Using the mathematical concept of invariance kernel in a stochastic context, we define different MPA effects according to biodiversity catches or mixed points of view. Numerical simulations inspired from data of Abore coral reef reserve in New Caledonia illustrate the main concepts. In this case, it is pointed out how MPA conservation effect is not necessarily conflicting with MPA catches effect. it is shown that such a co-viability requires medium exploitation rate. Moreover, the climatic changes represented by rise in cyclonic events seem to reinforce these assertions. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Résumé : Managing fisheries resources to maintain healthy ecosystems is one of the main goals of the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). While a number of international treaties call for the implementation of EAF, there are still gaps in the underlying methodology. One aspect that has received substantial scientific attention recently is fisheries-induced evolution (FIE). Increasing evidence indicates that intensive fishing has the potential to exert strong directional selection on life-history traits, behaviour, physiology, and morphology of exploited fish. Of particular concern is that reversing evolutionary responses to fishing can be much more difficult than reversing demographic or phenotypically plastic responses. Furthermore, like climate change, multiple agents cause FIE, with effects accumulating over time. Consequently, FIE may alter the utility derived from fish stocks, which in turn can modify the monetary value living aquatic resources provide to society. Quantifying and predicting the evolutionary effects of fishing is therefore important for both ecological and economic reasons. An important reason this is not happening is the lack of an appropriate assessment framework. We therefore describe the evolutionary impact assessment (EvoIA) as a structured approach for assessing the evolutionary consequences of fishing and evaluating the predicted evolutionary outcomes of alternative management options. EvoIA can contribute to EAF by clarifying how evolution may alter stock properties and ecological relations, support the precautionary approach to fisheries management by addressing a previously overlooked source of uncertainty and risk, and thus contribute to sustainable fisheries.

Résumé : In November and December 1959, one of us was assigned by the Credit and Technical Assistance Society (SATEC) to do a study on shrimp fishing on the Guiana Shield as practised by American trawlers (Figure 1). This study had both technological and biological goals. It was first necessary to describe the fishing boats and the methods used by American shrimp boats to fish in the Guianas. Each step of processing and packaging of the shrimp was monitored on board as well as on land, from catch up to storage under refrigerated conditions until commercialisation. It was then necessary to evaluate the relative proportions of shrimp and fish in the catches in order to establish the factors governing productivity of the operations. This was done with a view for establishing a fleet of fishing boats in French Guyana wishing to exploit as much of the catches as possible. American trawlers discard all fish and shellfish that are not marketable by American standards. The flat trawls used by ships based in Georgetown (British Guyana) or in Paramaribo (Surinam) are not designed for catching fish; but during the expedition off the shore of Surinam, we observed that a good part of catches was made up of various marketable species, including flatfishes, many goatfishes, pompano fishes, rockfishes, etc. It was thus important to weigh, insofar as possible, species that were discarded. ... En novembre et décembre 1959, l'un de nous était chargé par la Société d'assistance technique et de crédit (SATEC) d'une étude de la pêche à la crevette telle que la pratiquent les chalutiers américains (fig. 1 ) sur le plateau continental des Guyanes. Cette étude avait deux buts, technologique et biologique. Il fallait tout d'abord décrire les engins et les méthodes utilisés par les crevettiers américains pour exploiter les fonds guyanais et suivre pas à pas le travail de transformation et de conditionnement des crustacés, à bord comme à terre, de la capture jusqu'au stockage sous froid avant la commercialisation. Il était nécessaire ensuite d'évaluer les proportions relatives des crevettes et des poissons dans les apports, ceci pour établir les facteurs de rentabilité des opérations dans le cas de la mise en place, en Guyane française, d'armements métropolitains soucieux d'utiliser la presque totalité des captures. Les chalutiers américains rejettent en effet à la mer tout ce qui n'est pas crustacé commercialisable selon les normes observées aux Etats-Unis. Certes les chaluts plats utilisés par les navires basés à Georgetown (Guyane britannique) ou à Paramaribo (Surinam) ne sont pas des engins destinés à la capture des poissons mais, au cours de la marée effectuée au large du Surinam sur l'un des bateaux sus-cités, nous avons constaté qu'une bonne partie des captures était constituée d'espèces parfaitement commercialisables, poissons plats divers, Mullidés relativement nombreux, Carangidés, Scorpénidés, etc. Il était donc important de peser, dans la mesure du possible, ce qui était rejeté à la mer. Le marché des Antilles françaises, loin d'être saturé, pouvait être ravitaillé si les moyens de transport étaient organisés et si une infrastructure « froid » suffisante était créée. Il était peut-être possible, de plus, d'envisager la création d'une conserverie utilisant les têtes de crevettes habituellement éliminées (plus de 13 % du poids total des captures), les Scorpénidés et autres espèces ichthyologiques moins appréciées de la clientèle Antillaise, et les crustacés d'intérêt secondaire pour le marché américain : Portunidés (« cyriques »), Calappidés, crevettes de petites tailles, scyllares..., pour la confection de bisques, de soupes ou de concentrés; il suffisait pour cela d'équiper les chalutiers de cuiseurs, de broyeurs et de dessiccateurs. Les résultats obtenus ont été formulés et présentés à la SATEC sous forme d'une note ronéotypée en plusieurs cahiers dont la diffusion a été relativement restreinte. Nous reprenons ici ce travail en le développant grâce à l'exploitation des carnets de note de la mission comme de l'abondante bibliographie afférente. Les auteurs américains ont en effet beaucoup publié au sujet de la biologie des différentes espèces de Penéidés exploitées, de la technologie de la pêche comme à propos de la technologie des transformations culinaires subies par les crustacés. Les statistiques les plus récentes (LYLES, 1966) montrent que les apports pour l'année 1964 (la dernière année pour laquelle nous ayons des informations complètes) furent de 96 157 tonnes environ valant quelque 70 400 000 dollars; 99 % de cette production furent capturés au chalut de fond tandis que le reste l'était au chalut à perche, aux nasses, à l'épervier ou avec d'autres engins de type artisanal. La demande en « shrimps » outre-Atlantique est loin d'être saturée et les armements américains déplacent progressivement leurs unités vers les rares points du continent américain dont le plateau continental n'a point été, jusqu'à maintenant, exploité. Les capitaux investis dans la pêèhe proprement dite, les installations à terre et les moyens de distribution sont largement supérieurs à ceux qui ont été investis à propos de la pêche au thon et l'industrie crevettière américaine fait vivre une grande partie de la population de pêcheurs des états du sud des Etats-Unis. Le travail que nous présentons ici n'a aucun 2 prétention quant à l'établissement d'une liste faunistique du plateau guyanais pas plus qu'à une étude des fonds et la détermination précise des crevettes capturées n'a pas été tentée; le lecteur devra consulter à ce sujet les travaux de Voss (1955), DURAND (1959), HOLTHUIS (1959), BULLIS et THOMPSON (1959), HIGMAN (1959)... Nous espérons cependant que les documents que nous fournissons ici seront utiles aux professionnels soucieux de se documenter sur des techniques inutilisées encore en France, comme aux fabricants de filets qui fourniront les engins réclamés par les futurs exploitants du plateau guyanais, et peut-être par ceux de Madagascar. Résumé : The aggregative behaviour of the dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is studied in order to improve our knowledge of the mechanism involved in the association of this species with the floating objects and to evaluate its potential impact in term of exploitation, targeted or not. This PhD thesis is composed of four chapters. Through an extensive analyze of the literature, the first chapter takes stock of the present knowledge on the FADs, on the aggregative behaviour of pelagic fish and on the dolphinfish. The second chapter deals specifically with the aggregative behaviour of the dolphinfish by the way of acoustic tagging of fish carry out during offshore campaigns around drifting FADs. The feeding habits of the dolphinfish around FADs are the main purpose of the third chapter. It is studied by the way of two complementary methods : stomach contains analysis of dolphinfish aggregated around several types of floating objects and underwater inventory of the marine fauna under these floating objects. Finally, the fourth and last chapter sums all the results and suggests a theory to explain the aggregative behaviour of the dolphinfish. We also try to estimate the possible consequences of this behaviour on the abundance and on the distribution of this species on a larger scale.
Le comportement agrégatif de la dorade coryphène (Coryphaena hippurus) est étudié dans le but de mieux comprendre le déterminisme de l'association de cette espèce avec les objets flottants et d'en évaluer les impacts potentiels en terme de sensibilité à l'exploitation halieutique, qu'elle soit ciblée ou non. Ce mémoire de thèse est organisé en quatre chapitres. A travers une analyse approfondie de la bibliographie, le premier chapitre présente un bilan des connaissances actuelles sur les DCP, l'agrégation des poissons pélagiques et la dorade coryphène. Le second chapitre traite plus spécifiquement du comportement agrégatif de la dorade coryphène. Il a été abordé à l'aide de marquages électroniques réalisés au cours de campagnes hauturières autour de DCP dérivants. Le comportement trophique de la dorade coryphène fait l'objet du troisième chapitre. Il est abordé par l'utilisation conjointe de deux méthodes d'investigation : l'analyse des contenus stomacaux de dorades coryphènes agrégées sous divers types d'objets flottants et la réalisation d'inventaires faunistiques sous-marins autour de ces objets flottants. Enfin, le quatrième et dernier chapitre synthétise l'ensemble des résultats obtenus, propose une théorie du comportement agrégatif de la dorade coryphène et tente d'évaluer les conséquences possibles de ce comportement sur la distribution et l'abondance de l'espèce à grande échelle.

Résumé : SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic conditions in New Caledonia from 1990 to 1995 (drought) and their potential impact on the production. The development of this very particular process of physical and topographic differential evolution of the pond bottom under wind action (accumulation and digging) and its consequences on pond preparation is explained. This work takes a close look at the grow-out management : age and quality of post larvae, pond stocking with pre-grown animals, feed characteristics and management, water exchange management and pumping capacity, strategy on density and size of harvested animals. The results have been assessed using a distinctive tool, the "survival differential", allowing inter-pond comparisons within a site, inter-farms comparisons over pluri-annual periods of time. >From the commented farm results over a 20 year period, we could distinguish the principal factors responsible for the drop of grow-out capacity of some ponds. We have outlined a conceptual description of the different parameters leading to the decrease of survival, an epidemiological scenario and a synoptic table of the history of events and their relative severity. The study draws the hypothesis of a cumulative effect of positive factors, which could have led back to satisfying production results: a physical and biochemical restoration of pond bottoms, a modified and standardized grow-out management, an appropriate pumping capacity and the come back of adequate climatic conditions. This case study illustrates the concept of « flexibility » of the farming capacity and the sustainability of prawn farming in New Caledonia. The clear objective of this 20 year historic investigation was to get relevant information, in order to improve the understanding on the "summer syndrome" which hits two farms at the moment, and to participate in the hypothesis under study by the DAC (2005). We also tried to make the new farmers aware of the fragility of the pond ecosystem, and give some common-sense advices in the hope that such problems will not happen again in other places.
La ferme de SODACAL, conçue à l'origine comme une ferme de démonstration pour le développement d'une filière d'aquaculture exportatrice de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie a connu une phase de croissance exponentielle de sa production de 1984 à 1992 (jusqu'à 400 t/an), puis une chute brutale en 1993 (250 t/an) qui s'est prolongée jusqu'en 1997 et enfin une reprise à partir de 1998 pour arriver à une stabilisation autour de 420 t/an depuis 1999. L'étude inventorie les dysfonctionnements observés avant et pendant la crise de production. Parmi ceux-ci sont évoqués les épisodes de mortalité de crevettes, d'autres désordres biologiques (décollements de tapis benthique et « hécatombes » de crabes et de poissons), l'état délétère des fonds (sédiments réduits et odeur d'hydrogène sulfuré). Elle permet notamment de montrer que des épisodes de mortalité typiques du Syndrome 93 pouvaient être observés sur cette ferme dès 1990. L'étude met en évidence les conditions climatiques remarquables qui ont sévi en Nouvelle-Calédonie de 1990 à 1995 (sécheresse) et leur impact probable sur les élevages. La genèse du phénomène très particulier d'évolution physique et topographique des fonds des bassins par l'effet du vent (accumulation et creusement) et des conséquences sur la préparation des bassins est explicitée. Ce travail aborde la gestion zootechnique : l'âge et la « qualité » des post larves, la pratique des ensemencements à partir d'animaux pré grossis, la gestion de l'alimentation et la nature de la provende, le contrôle du renouvellement d'eau et la capacité de pompage, le choix des densités et du calibre des animaux récoltés. Les résultats ont pu être évalués à travers un outil original «le différentiel de survie », permettant des comparaisons inter-bassins au sein du site, inter-fermes à des périodes pluri annuelles distinctes. A partir des résultats commentés de la ferme obtenus sur 20 années, on a pu distinguer les principaux facteurs qui ont provoqué cette chute d'aptitude culturale de certains bassins. Un schéma conceptuel des différents paramètres ayant conduit à la baisse des survies, un scénario épidémiologique ainsi qu'un tableau synoptique de la chronologie des évènements et de leur relative sévérité sont esquissés. Le rapport ébauche l'hypothèse d'un cumul de causes favorables qui ont permis le retour à des résultats zootechniques satisfaisants : une réhabilitation physique et biochimique des fonds de bassins, une zootechnie modifiée et standardisée, une capacité de pompage adéquate et une climatologie de nouveau favorable. Cette étude de cas permet ainsi d'illustrer les notions d « élasticité » de l'aptitude culturale et de durabilité de la crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Le but de cette enquête historique sur 20 ans est l'acquisition d'informations pertinentes permettant d'améliorer la compréhension du « Syndrome d'été » qui affecte actuellement deux fermes de production et ainsi aider à compléter le scénario hypothétique avancé par le Dac (2005). Enfin, au travers de cet historique, on a cherché également à sensibiliser les nouveaux opérateurs de la filière sur la fragilité de l'écosystème-bassin et présenter quelques conseils de bon sens pour éviter que de tels phénomènes ne se reproduisent ailleurs.

Résumé : La réalisation des campagnes halieutiques Polka et Guyaviv2 au large des côtes guyanaises à la fin des années 80 a permis d’obtenir les relations biométriques qui ont été utilisées depuis cette date pour tous les calculs des captures (spectres par classe de taille) et des évaluations annuelles du stock de vivaneaux (Lutjanus purpureus) (Etienne Prévost 1989; E. Prévost et Tous 1989; Lampert 2012a) Plus de vingt ans après, nous pouvons nous poser la question de la pertinence de ces relations de nos jours. Des changements dans les paramètres de croissance de L. purpureus ne sont pas à exclure suite aux changements climatiques et à la pression de pêche exercée depuis quelques décennies. Ces changements pouvant alors se traduire par des variations dans les relations Taille-Poids (TP). Ce travail vise à mettre à jour les mesures de taille et du poids des individus échantillonnés lors des débarquements, afin d’établir de nouvelles relations TP, ou confirmer les anciennes. Ce travail se borne aux relations TP de l’espèce Lutjanus purpureus, qui représente à elle seule, plus de 90 % des débarquements de vivaneaux en Guyane. Cette espèce est notamment utilisée pour les calculs du stock annuel du vivaneau du plateau guyanais.
