La dynamique des pêches côtières du pays bigouden Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Résumé : In the beginning, the coastal fleet of the Bigouden region fished by trawling and was completely focused on exploiting lobster and hake. It is a traditional business that expanded between the last war and the 70s, reaching its peak between 1975 and 1980.
The best image to give an idea of this fleet is that of a "bucket waterwheel" endlessly discharging its catch in the four ports of the Guilvinec district. Where there is a seafaring business in Guilvinec, Loctudy and Saint-Guénolé, there is a complementarity that is expressed in two ways:
- coastal fishing constitutes a very noticeable and regular supplement to production, since sales happen daily and only bad winter weather causes a relative decrease in the supplement. - coastal fishing gives a flattering image of the port based on the display of high-quality leading market products: daily live lobster, hake and angler.
In this study, we have above all tried to evaluate the situation of the Bigouden coastal system as an entity, while including in the same analysis the species, fleets and the exploitation of the resource. For the main species, a balance sheet is proposed. It covers the lobster, hake and angler separately. Lobster, because of its small amount of movement, can be considered as being an isolated stock, while fish belong to much more wide-ranging groups.
The lobster has gained from various increases in meshing that have been imposed since 1971, even if these have not always been strictly applied. One of the results of this management by means of meshing is a "depreciation" of the variations of daily yields around an average value of 100kg.
For the hake, the dominant trait is an increase in yields in the last few years in accordance with an improvement of the situation in the Gulf of Gascony due to a generalised decrease of effort and a modification of the exploitation profile since the appearance of boulters and straight nets. Whereas the situation for lobster fisheries, as regards the hake's marketable size, did not improve, since the demand for small hake still exists, we have nonetheless been witnessing for about ten years a slow diversification of the fleets' business activities, which is much more in line with sequential hake fisheries' logical outline of exploitation. When lobster yields decrease, one part of the fleet focuses on the fish at the edges of the lobster fisheries.
For the angler, we see rather similar phenomena and a significant increase in unloading of the two species by lobster fishermen due also to a widening of their fishing areas. On the lobster mudflats themselves, there is no notable change in exploitation in the historical records. All studies of coastal fishing always come up against the problem of acquiring statistical data and the Bigouden region is no exception to the rule.
To improve this situation, in 1987 and 1988 two items were chosen:
- a better awareness of the activity and of the areas frequented, by survey during unloading in Guilvinec and in Loctudy.
- a detailed description of the haul by species, by sampling, in Loctudy, on two-thirds of coastal sales, between December 1987 and November 1988.
For this reason, analysis of fleets by type is still cursory and covers only one year. The appearance of new trends towards fish can only be described qualitatively, since there is no historical record. The classification of boats was done by analysing data furnished by the auctions. This first assessment is not necessarily reliable, above all because of the auctions' inaccurate description of the hauls, a deficiency that we have tried to overcome by surveying in Loctudy.
In conclusion, we are witnessing in the Bigouden region, as in other entities, a rebalancing between traditional business activities and modern trends. Lobster fishing, almost exclusive before the 1980s, is tending to decrease for two main reasons:
- a generalised decrease in activity in the lobster fisheries due to non-renewal of coastal fish fleets,
- The transfer of part of the lobster fishermen's activities to fish, since the lobster and its accompanying catch no longer seemed able to insure the economic viability of new ships.
Other maritime districts resolved their lobster problem in a different way. The Lorient fishermen improved their yields by using more capable trawlers, the fishermen of Sable by exploiting the hake fish run to the fullest and limiting their lobster fishing to the best season. The Bigouden region is slowly turning to the second solution, as it renews its fleet.
Is total serum protein a good indicator for welfare in reared sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)? Auteur(s) : Coeurdacier, Jean-luc Dutto, Gilbert Gasset, Eric Blancheton, Jean-paul Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : Reared sea bass were submitted to six stressful situations: hyperoxia with or without hypercapnia, increased stocking density in an open flow or recirculating system, transfer to another tank and nodavirus injection. The potentially negative impact of these factors on the lives of sea bass was investigated by measuring 9 water parameters and 19 fish parameters including total serum protein (TSP). TSP has already been used to evaluate stress. The present study investigates data of previous and new experiments, concentrating on the potential use of TSP as a routine indicator to assess welfare in sea bass reared on fish farms. In the current experiment, oxygen and carbon dioxide were seen to affect levels of TSP, but alterations were too erratic to enable proper comparison, probably because they are normal components of the fish environment and become toxic only by dose increase. TSP decreased when stocking density increased. After transfer to another tank, TSP decreased to 14% for three weeks and then increased during the fourth week through compensative overproduction, before returning to normal levels after 2 months. The results confirmed that transfer is an important stress factor for fish, with cumulative effects for successive transfers. TSP alteration of nodavirus-injected fish depends on the type of symptoms, which can be divided into 3 groups: (i) dying fish, in which TSP increased sharply due to over-production of protein involved in non-specific defences and inflammation, then decreased dramatically before death; (ii) whirling fish, a group that included both fish that later died, in which TSP decreased, and fish that subsequently survived, in which TSP increased due to development of specific immunity; and (iii) asymptomatic fish, in which TPS was similar to control levels and which were probably insensitive to nodavirus and/or had developed defences. In this paper, different mechanisms of TSP alteration are proposed and the interest of TSP as a field parameter is discussed. TSP is a non-destructive parameter that is robust, easy to measure everywhere and cheap, representing a suitable way of monitoring the overall welfare of fish by its regular increase. It can be used only as a "warning" of poor rearing conditions, however, and further investigations would be needed to identify the specific stress or health disorder. Drifting FADs used in tuna fisheries: an ecological trap? Auteur(s) : Marsac, F Fonteneau, Alain Menard, Frederic Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This paper discusses the hypothesis that small tunas and the various species found in association with drifting fads (such as "mahi-mahi", rainbow runner, wahoo, etc.) may be biologically trapped by such a strong association. Massive seeding of drifting artificial fads was observed worldwide during recent years. In this hypothesis, we suggest that fads may alter some biological characteristics of epipelagic populations associated with them: migration, growth, condition factors, predation and natural mortality. As fads are most often used in the equatorial currents, they tend to exhibit zonal drift. Therefore, the associated populations would be artificially transferred from one part of the ocean to another, when they would show different movement patterns in the absence of fads. Natural logs were probably beneficial in terms of ecology and evolution, because they tend to accumulate in convergence areas, most often considered as rich forage areas. Now, fads are seeded in offshore areas, which are not necessarily favourable for tuna feeding. This apparently strong association between fishes and drifting fads may then produce an unexpected biological impact on tuna populations and their associated fauna. The plan is to test this hypothesis in the Atlantic, developing an ad hoc research programme based on tagging, biological and physiological studies, in association to an analysis of high resolution fishery data before and after the development of the fad fishery. This paper describes the fishing activity in Martinique, French West Indies. It draws up the balance sheet of acquirements about marine resources of the island. The difficulties of fisheries management are discussed with reference to biologists and economists works in the last ten years. We also show how management efforts to decrease fishing pressure on reef resources has induced the implantation of a new technology: the Fish Aggregating Deviee. The differing histories of development of FADs in the French West Indies are compared. The positive results from the introduction of the FADs and the estimated risks due to the transferance of fishing pressure on the continental shelf is presented.
Campagnes 2008 en Martinique et en Guadeloupe Auteur(s) : Bertrand, Jacques Abarnou, Alain Bocquene, Gilles Chiffoleau, Jean-francois Reynal, Lionel Résumé : During the years 1972-1993, kepone a persistent pesticide has been used in the banana fields of the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) to content a weevil. A slow desorption of the molecule from soil induces its transfer to the sea through the rivers from leaching and erosion. This study intended to take stock on the contamination by kepone of the fishery species around the islands fifteen years after the kepone ban. Furthermore other chemical pollutants were sought in fish and shellfish around the Martinique island.
The results confirmed persistence of marine fauna contamination by kepone, mainly in the alluvium areas in front of polluted rivers. They shown also that this contamination may spread more widely but with fast decreasing through the marine food webs. For the other pollutants sought, the results were in general lower than the statutory values. Within these substances, only mercury gave a signal close to the prescribed threshold for top predator samples. Finally, on the whole the observed systems appeared preserved from human chemical pollutants, apart from kepone. Inventaire des plantes introduites en Méditerranée : origines et répercussions sur l'environnement et les activités humaines Auteur(s) : Verlaque, M Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : This review addresses the problem of recently introduced plants in the Mediterranean in order to analyse their vectors, the dispersal processes and the possible ecological and economic consequences. Ninety-five cases (94 macroscopic algae and one seagrass) are listed and discussed. Three major routes of access into the Mediterranean are indicated: shipping, the Suez canal and aqua-culture. The recent introduction of Caulerpa taxifolia along our coasts has called attention to a new potential source: aquaria. Among the successful acclimatizations, cold-temperate Pacific and Atlantic species remain confined to the north of the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions, Adriatic), whereas some tropical or sub-tropical plants colonize large areas. Some introduced algae proliferate to the detriment of the indigenous Mediterranean vegetation. In contrast with some terrestrial introductions, no population crash has been observed in the Mediterranean, although some notable fluctuations seem to occur in coastal lagoons. From an economic point of view, the two activities most affected by this phenomenon are aquaculture and fishing. With the gradual disappearance of European frontiers, the worldwide development of marine cultures and the multiplication of giant Seaworlds, the transfer of live marine organisms will become routine and the risk of new introductions will considerably increase in the Mediterranean. Only international legislation, established by the countries of the littoral, will be able to control these problems. Accumulation and mobilization of lipids in relation to reproduction of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the Western Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Zudaire, Iker Murua, Hilario Grande, Maitane Pernet, Fabrice Bodin, Nathalie Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Total lipid content and lipid class composition were analyzed in gonads, liver and white muscle of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) throughout ovary development to understand its reproductive allocation strategy and to assess the relation between female condition and reproduction. A total of 112 females were collected onboard purse-seiner in the Western Indian Ocean from January to March 2009, from June to July 2009, and from April to May 2010. Gonads were characterized by highly variable total lipid contents ranging from 5 to 27 μg mg−1 of wet weight (ww) with a predominance of neutral lipids, mainly triacylglycerols (TAG) and sterol- and wax-esters. The different lipid classes in gonads described an accumulative pattern through the maturity process from immature to hydration phase. Total lipid content in liver varied from 10 to 21 μg mg−1 ww, and serves as fuel for yellowfin tuna reproduction. TAG and phospholipid deposits became depleted as the ovary developed, suggesting a transfer of lipids directly from liver to the oocytes during vitellogenesis. In contrast, muscle total lipid content was low and constant throughout ovarian development (2.5–6 μg mg−1 ww). Hence, yellowfin tuna can be defined as an income-capital breeder species for which the cost of reproduction depends mainly on concurrent energy income from feeding and only little on stored lipids. Besides, no significant relationship between gonad lipid composition and fecundity was found in females able to spawn. Finally, the influence of yellowfin tuna aggregation behaviour on reproductive female condition has been investigated: gonad total lipid contents were higher in females caught in free-swimming schools than in females caught under fish aggregating devices (FADs). However, these results did not clarify whether the influence of FADs on associated yellowfin tuna affects their reproductive capacity. Auteur(s) : Bertrand, Jacques Guyader, Olivier Reynal, Lionel Résumé : In the French West Indies islands, the transfer of chlordecone (kepone) from treated grounds towards the marine environment has been proved since the beginning of 2000s. In 2008, a maximal residue limit (MRL) was set at 20 µg / kg wet weight in fish and seafood, and therefore intensified the concern about the risks of high human exposure to the pesticide due to the consumption of contaminated marine products. To answer this concern, several sampling cruises were carried by public authorities and by Ifremer in order to analyze the contamination of the fish fauna around the Guadeloupe island. The data collected within these surveys improved our knowledge on the characteristics of the contamination of fish fauna and allowed to assess the distribution of this contamination in relation with optional geographical plans of the marine area around the Guadeloupe island. Further, this study was completed by an assessment of the fishery activity in areas which are the more exposed to the chlordecone contamination, taking into account data from a fishery observatory which has been set up in the archipelago since 2007.
The results allow to precise two main characteristics of distribution of the contamination: its spatial and specific dimensions. About the spatial aspect, contamination of the fish fauna is centred on marine areas which are closely downstream contaminated watersheds. Concerning the marine fauna, two species groups are particularly exposed: the very coastal ones, particularly those living at or close to the mouth of rivers, and crustaceans wherever they live. Among fishes, the most contaminated species belong to many various groups which are present in the very coastal belt, more or less regularly. Lastly, this study provided orders of magnitude on the relative part of the fishery activity around the archipelagos for which the contamination is of great concern. The target species is the swordfish (Xiphias gladius), fished mainly in the tropical waters surrounding the island between longitudes 45 degree E and 60 degree E, and latitudes 17 degree S and 27 degree S. From 1998 to 2000, a finalised research programme enabled the collection of precise data concerning the lines' positions and the parameters of the fishing efforts: 3,602 nettings were thus informed by the catches (in numbers of individuals caught) and 12 descriptive variables of the effort. In parallel with this collection effort, satellite maps that described the ocean's landscape of this region of the Indian Ocean exploited by La Réunion's fisheries were made available to sailors and scientists. Extractions from these environmental variables were made at the fishing lines' positions, which allowed us to propose 20 variables describing the environmental conditions of swordfish catches applied to the nettings. In an early part of this study, after a descriptive analysis and a first selection of the variables, we used several GAM (Generalised Additive Models) to model the respective effects of effort and environmental variables on the variability of swordfish catches. We thus highlighted the predominance of factors linked to fishermen (fishing effort) on oceanographic factors in the explanation of this variability. Following these results, a summary on the biology and ecology of the swordfish was proposed in order to draw up hypotheses on the characteristics of this species' population in the Indian Ocean. The aspects linked to the individual behaviour and movements of the population were particularly highlighted. In a latter part of this study and in order to complete the empirical approach by an exploratory constructivist approach, we proposed a modelling tool in order to simulate the possible movements of individuals within the oceanic landscape described by the available satellite maps. After reading in the literature about the various forms of modelling the movements of the large pelagics, we developed an original computer modelling architecture of the multi-agent type that made it possible to manipulate in a dynamic way the satellite maps (and derived products), the individual movements of "animats" whose behaviours were based on this environmental information, and agents that clarify the process of long-line fishing in a geographical way. The computer model that was implemented (MUFINS, for MUlti-Fish INdian ocean Simulator) was next used by calibrating the behaviour of the animats on the real data originally from the analysis of commercial catches proposed in the first part, using robust techniques based on fuzzy logic. The results of the simulations were compared, on the one hand, with the large-scale hypotheses of movement proposed in the first part, and, on the other hand, to swordfish catches both real and corrected for the effect of the fishing effort modelled by the GAM models. Even if the results of these simulations in this study do not allow for proposing convincing interpretations of the underlying processes, the MUFINS tool showed its ability to address questions associated with the swordfish's behaviour in the tropical oceanic landscape and to the effects of scale transfers between the individual level and the collective level. We now envisage its use in a more operational framework, as an interface for dialogue between fishermen and scientists with a goal of sustainable management of the resource. A soft technology to improve survival and reproductive performance of Litopenaeus stylirostris by counterbalancing physiological disturbances associated with handling stress Auteur(s) : Wabete, Nelly Chim, Liet Pham, Dominique Lemaire, Pierrette Massabuau, J Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The consequences of handling stress (fishing, transfer, eyestalk ablation) on shrimp broodstock are poorly documented. The weakness of farmed shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, during winter is a major problem in New Caledonia, because of seasonal climate (tropical-sub-temperate). The transfer of broodstock in winter from earthen outdoor ponds to indoor maturation tanks in the hatchery (T=20 degrees C, Salinity=35 parts per thousand, fed shrimp) usually leads, after 48 h, to high mortality (up to 70%). Eyestalk ablation to induce ovarian maturation in females leads to further mortality. Starting from a background analysis of physiological disturbances (initial osmoregulatory imbalance) associated with handling stress (Wabete, N., Chim, L., Lernaire, P., Massabuau, J.-C., 2004. Ed. Ifremer. Actes Colloq. 38, 75-84.), we developed aprotocol using a soft technology, based on modifications of water salinity, temperature and feeding regime. The aim was to minimize problems of osmoregulatory imbalance and associated mortalities. The protocol we developed, called the LSD OT protocol (Low Salinity and Diet, Optimal Temperature), was first evaluated on sub-adult shrimp (20-25 g) and then applied to broodstock. Survival after transfer and following eyestalk ablation, as well as reproductive achievement (spawning rate, nauplii number) was considerably improved when shrimps were transferred under "physiological comfort" i.e. warmed isosmotic water (26 degrees C and 26 parts per thousand) and unfed for 3 d. This new handling protocol, based on a better control of salinity, temperature and feeding conditions, has been transferred successfully to private hatcheries and already contributes to an increased profitability of New-Caledonian shrimp industry. The length frequency distribution of blackfin tunas (Thunnus atlanticus) shows a significant difference between fishes caught with a longline, during Ifremer experimental surveys and fishes landed by fishermen who exploit martinican FADs. The fishing technique used could probably explain this. In fact, diving surveys have confirmed the presence of great concentrations of adult blackfin tunas under FADs. Big individuals stay during long periods between 20 and 50 meters under the FAD while small ones go up to the surface to feed on little flying fishes, at dawn principally. The bait and the line used at the moment around martinican FADs do not fit to adult blackfin tunas fishing. From these observations and following the tests realized by Ifremer in La Reunion in 1990, we proposed to martinican fishermen to test a new technique based on the utilization of live bait locally called "coulirous" (Selar crumenophthalmus). In La Reunion, this technique has been successful. Live baits are hooked on a vertical longline. In Martinique, the tests to catch live bait during the night near the shore have been already successful and the first fishing experiences with vertical line are also encouraging. This paper aims at proposing and transfering this technique to martinican fishermen but technical exchanges and discussions are needed to improve this new fishing technique. The theoretical debate on migration and family is ambivalent. Migration can be seen from an “individualist’’ and distant logic of the family or, on the other hand, migration can be viewed as a strategy of survival for the family network. It is in the objective of contributing to this debate, the present article will analyze the migration process from a migrant strategy perspective, more specifically from the perspective of the “Hloua” migrants off the Benin coast. Four dimensions are of particular interest: the decision making process, the cost and organization of the trip, integration in the host community and the maintenance of relations with the host community. Within a large scale research on poverty and the strategies of survival of artisan fishing (Avloh, Ayiguinnou et Agoué) in Bénin, the present analysis is based on migration stories collected from returning migrants or from family members still living in the village. This story analysis has been completed with quantitative analyses on the frequency of the use of organization and decision making, the frequency of the use of residential and professional insertion, and the amount of remittances. The results show the central place of family ties during the migratory process from the start of the decision making process, the travel planning, the entrusting of the women and children of the migrant, to the residential establishment and the professional insertion in the host society. This network organizes and structures efficiently the migratory phenomenon by intervening during the decisive steps. However, once inserted, the connections maintained with the family network are limited for the majority to an affective solidarity characterized by telephone contacts or message transfers, and sometimes remittances sent back largely lower to the family’s expectations. This results more and more in the migrant diminishing the social capital of the family without always contributing in some substantially way on the financial side. A paradox which could find its explanation in future researches under a perspective of migrations’ dynamics. Contamination of some aquatic species with the organochlorine pesticide chlordecone in Martinique Auteur(s) : Coat, Sophie Bocquene, Gilles Godard, Eric Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Martinique is a French overseas department whose economy relies heavily on agriculture. Organochlorine pesticides, mainly chlordecone, were used for banana cultivation to eradicate banana weevil over a period of 40 years. Chlordecone is chemically stable, and has a strong affinity for fatty tissues. It is therefore able to bioaccumulate in animals and thereby represent a threat to ecosystems and man. Soils from banana plantations in Martinique are heavily contaminated with chlordecone. Possible transfer of these molecules from agricultural watersheds to the aquatic environment and the organisms that live in it is feared. The hypothesis that ecosystems of Martinique might be highly contaminated with this organochlorine pesticide was investigated. Chlordecone levels were measured in various freshwater and marine species. Data show a heavy contamination of many carnivorous and detritivorous species (fish and prawns). Concentrations measured in wild or farmed tilapia are among the highest ever reported in the literature. Some coastal species (fish and lobster) were also found to be contaminated, although to a lesser extent. Given the biogeochemical behavior of chlordecone, the most likely route of contamination is food. Detected concentrations in marine organisms are below the tolerated limits established by authorities. however. the impact of other sources of exposure, namely, contaminated water and root vegetables, remains to be investigated. The Recopesca Project : a new example of participative approach to collect fisheries and in situ environmental data Auteur(s) : Leblond, Emilie Lazure, Pascal Laurans, Martial Rioual, Celine Woerther, Patrice Quemener, Loic Berthou, Patrick Éditeur(s) : Mercator Ocean Résumé : Face to the lack of data to assess precisely the spatial distribution of catches and fishing effort and for the environmental characterization of the fishing area, Ifremer has been implemented since 2005 a new project, Recopesca. It consists in fitting out a sample of voluntary fishing vessels with sensors recording data on fishing effort (and at mid-terms catches) and physical parameters such as temperature or salinity. Recopesca aims at setting up a network of sensors, for scientific purposes, to collect data and improve resources assessment and diagnostics on fisheries, and environmental data required for ecosystem-based management initiatives. The challenge was to develop sensors with no trouble for the fishermen, tough enough to be fixed up on fishing gears, self powered and autonomous. Insofar as the sample of targeted vessels intends to be representative of all the metiers and fleets, the sensors are modular and scalable to collect new data. Different sensors have been implemented: (i) a temperature-salinity sensor, able to record physical parameters, depth and duration of immersion, for passive and active gears, and (ii) a specific sensor to record number or length of passive gears. A GPS monitors the position of the vessels and the temperature or salinity profiles and series. Each sensor is equipped with a radio device transferring the data to a receiver on-board, called “concentrator” that sends the data to Ifremer central databases by GPRS. An anti-rolling weigh-scale has been developed and is currently on test to record catches per species and fishing operation. The presentation will show the first data and results of this participative approach. Comparative study of potential transfer of natural and anthropogenic cadmium to plankton communities in the North-West African upwelling Auteur(s) : Auger, Pierre-amael Machu, Eric Gorgues, Thomas Grima, Nicolas Waeles, Mathieu Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : A Lagrangian approach based on a physical-biogeochemical modeling was used to compare the potential transfer of cadmium (Cd) from natural and anthropogenic sources to plankton communities (Cd-uptake) in the NorthWest African upwelling. In this region, coastal upwelling was estimated to be the main natural source of Cd while the most significant anthropogenic source for marine ecosystem is provided by phosphate industry. In our model experiment, Cd-uptake (natural or anthropogenic) in the North-West African upwelling is the result of an interplay between the Cd dispersion (by advection processes) and the simulated biological productivity. In the Moroccan waters, advection processes limit the residence time of water masses resulting in a low natural Cd-uptake by plankton communities while anthropogenic Cd-uptake is high. As expected, the situation is reversed in the Senegalo-Mauritanian upwelling where natural Cd-uptake is higher than anthropogenic Cd-uptake. Based upon an estimate of Cd sources, our modeling study shows, unexpectedly, that the anthropogenic signal of potential Cd-bioaccumulation in the Moroccan upwelling is of the same order of magnitude as the natural signal mainly present in the Senegalo-Mauritanian upwelling region. A comparison with observed Cd levels in mollusk and fishes, which shows overall agreement with our simulations, is confirming our estimates. A dynamic and mechanistic model of PCB bioaccumulation in the European hake (Merluccius merluccius) Auteur(s) : Bodiguel, Xavier Maury, Olivier Mellon-duval, Capucine Roupsard, Francois Le Guellec, Anne-marie Loizeau, Veronique Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Bioaccumulation is difficult to document because responses differ among chemical compounds, with environmental conditions, and physiological processes characteristic of each species. We use a mechanistic model, based on the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory, to take into account this complexity and study factors impacting accumulation of organic pollutants in fish through ontogeny. The bioaccumulation model proposed is a comprehensive approach that relates evolution of hake PCB contamination to physiological information about the fish, such as diet, metabolism, reserve and reproduction status. The species studied is the European hake (Merluccius merluccius, L. 1758). The model is applied to study the total concentration and the lipid normalised concentration of 4 PCB congeners in male and female hakes from the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean sea) and the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic ocean). Outputs of the model compare consistently to measurements over the life span of fish. Simulation results clearly demonstrate the relative effects of food contamination, growth and reproduction on the PCB bioaccumulation in hake. The same species living in different habitats and exposed to different PCB prey concentrations exhibit marked difference in the body accumulation of PCBs. At the adult stage, female hakes have a lower PCB concentration compared to males for a given length. We successfully simulated these sex-specific PCB concentrations by considering two mechanisms: a higher energy allocation to growth for females and a transfer of PCBs from the female to its eggs when allocating lipids from reserve to eggs. Finally, by its mechanistic description of physiological processes, the model is relevant for other species and sets the stage for a mechanistic understanding of toxicity and ecological effects of organic contaminants in marine organisms. Small-scale FADs-associated fishing techniques used in the Pacific region Auteur(s) : Chapman, L Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Over the last 16 years, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC - formerly the South Pacific Commission) has been developing and providing information on mid-water fishing techniques targeting the larger, deeper-swimming tunas that aggregate around FADs. SPC masterfishermen have conducted in-country fishing trials to test methods, such as vertical longlines, and train local fishermen in their construction and use. Vertical longline catch rates have varied considerably due to a range of reasons with no catches reported in some locations, or just sharks, to highs of over 6.5 kg /10 hooks/hour being recorded in other locations. Other methods like drop-stone, palu-ahi, and single-hook drifting lines have been developed within the region, with SPC adopting and transferring this technology to other locations. To further disseminate this information, SPC has recently published a technical manual outlining a range of mid-water fishing gears and techniques that can be used in association with FADs. An outline of the main gears and techniques with catch data where available is presented, with factors influencing catches discussed based on the findings of SPC masterfishermen over the years. Evolution de l'activite-des flottilles françaises en Mer d'Irlande et en Mer Celtique Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Morizur, Yvon Rivoalen, Jean-jacques Éditeur(s) : CM. 1982/K : 8 Résumé : Since 1978, the habits of the french fishermen working with bottom trawl in the Irish Sea and in the Celtic Sea were altered (CHARUAU et M0RIZUR, 198l) under the pressure of the new mesh regulation. Two facts are pointed out: - the shifting, stabilized during 1980 and 198l, of a part of the effort of the vessels fishing for gadoids, from the area VIIa to the areaVIIf - a tendancy inside the area VIIg of a part of the effort of the Nephrops trawlers to be transferred on benthic fishes when the yield of Nephrops is low.
