Fluctuations à long terme du thon rouge: validité, origines et conséquences Auteur(s) : Ravier, Christelle Éditeur(s) : Ecole nationale supérieure agronomique de Rennes Résumé : Describe and gain understanding on fluctuations in animal population over time and space is a central goal of population ecology. This is also crucial to ensure the sustainable management of exploited resources, particularly those with complex population dynamics such as the bluefin tuna. The goal of this work is to collect bluefin tuna catches from the ancestral Mediterranean and Atlantic trap fisheries to (i) characterise long-term fluctuations in bluefin tuna population migrating in the Mediterranean, (ii) analyse their causes et (iii) assess their implications for fisheries management. The bluefin tuna main biological and ecological characteristics are first detailed. Then, the first part presents the trap fishery, and the process of collect and validation of the historical catches. This leads to develop a data base of 54 time-series more than 20 years long, the longest ones spanning about four centuries. Mean historical catches were around 15 000 tons/year ([7 000;25 000]). Time-series are analysed in a second part. Temporal variability of trap catches may be decomposed in three components: 100-year-long periodic fluctuations, 20-year cycles and inter-annual variations. These medium- to long-term fluctuations, representing more than 50% of the variability in the time-series, were synchronous all around the western Mediterranean and adjacent North Atlantic. In contrast, short-term variability was synchronous at a local scale only. It is argued that long-term fluctuations in trap catches could be considered as a proxy for those in abundance, and a synthetic time-series is computed to depict them. Biological and ecological processes that could cause such long-term fluctuations are discussed in a third part. We tested whether long-term fluctuations in Atlantic bluefin tuna might be related to large-scale environmental changes, using long time-series of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Length of the Day index (LOD, a proxy of the atmospheric circulation index ACI) and the temperature. Spectral analyses of trap catches, LOD and temperature displayed similar spectra with peak at low frequency, whereas those of the NAO exhibited a broad band spectrum. Regression analyses and tests of correlation did not reveal any clear relationship between trap catches on the one hand and NAO and LOD on the other hand. In contrast, long-term fluctuations in trap catches appear to be negatively and significantly related to long-term trends in temperature. Underlying processes that could explain such a relationship are discussed, with special focus on changes in migration patterns. Finally, implications of such fluctuations in term of fisheries management are discussed in a fourth part. A simulation framework, in which a simulated population dynamics model is coupled with a VPA, is built to test the pertinence of the diagnostic of stock assessment according to different scenarios on fluctuations origins and population status. In the hypothesis of fluctuations linked to variations in the recruitment, VPA appears able to reconstruct the fluctuations but the predictions may be biased if natural fluctuations are not taking into account. In the hypothesis of fluctuations linked to changes in migration pattern, VPA is not able to reconstruct the population dynamics. In a precautionary approach, quotas which follow may be unsuitable in the best case, at worst dangerous if they are defined in comparison with a reference point. The concept of cible reference points, fixe and unique over time, appears not relevant for bluefin tuna; estimate trajectory reference pertinent may prove to be more pertinent. Drifting FADs used in tuna fisheries: an ecological trap? Auteur(s) : Marsac, F Fonteneau, Alain Menard, Frederic Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This paper discusses the hypothesis that small tunas and the various species found in association with drifting fads (such as "mahi-mahi", rainbow runner, wahoo, etc.) may be biologically trapped by such a strong association. Massive seeding of drifting artificial fads was observed worldwide during recent years. In this hypothesis, we suggest that fads may alter some biological characteristics of epipelagic populations associated with them: migration, growth, condition factors, predation and natural mortality. As fads are most often used in the equatorial currents, they tend to exhibit zonal drift. Therefore, the associated populations would be artificially transferred from one part of the ocean to another, when they would show different movement patterns in the absence of fads. Natural logs were probably beneficial in terms of ecology and evolution, because they tend to accumulate in convergence areas, most often considered as rich forage areas. Now, fads are seeded in offshore areas, which are not necessarily favourable for tuna feeding. This apparently strong association between fishes and drifting fads may then produce an unexpected biological impact on tuna populations and their associated fauna. The plan is to test this hypothesis in the Atlantic, developing an ad hoc research programme based on tagging, biological and physiological studies, in association to an analysis of high resolution fishery data before and after the development of the fad fishery. Meanwhile, the importance of early life stages in dispersal and connectivity has recently experienced an increasing interest in conservation programmes for coral reef fishes. This study aims at assessing the effectiveness of DNA barcoding for the automated identification of coral reef fish larvae through large-scale ecosystemic sampling. Fish larvae were mainly collected using bongo nets and light traps around Moorea between September 2008 and August 2010 in 10 sites distributed in open waters. Fish larvae ranged from 2 to 100 mm of total length, with the most abundant individuals being <5 mm. Among the 505 individuals DNA barcoded, 373 larvae (i.e. 75%) were identified to the species level. A total of 106 species were detected, among which 11 corresponded to pelagic and bathypelagic species, while 95 corresponded to species observed at the adult stage on neighbouring reefs. This study highlights the benefits and pitfalls of using standardized molecular systems for species identification and illustrates the new possibilities enabled by DNA barcoding for future work on coral reef fish larval ecology. The sub-prefecture of Madingo-Kayes is watered by the Kouilou-Niari basin. This constitutes an ecological niche of a wide variety of fish species sought by local people for their supporting role in the fight against food insecurity and their contribution to livelihoods and rural economies. Fish consumption in Madingo-Kayes provides nearly 70% of animal protein. The monthly recipe fish production in the district is between 250 000 and 500 000 FCFA. It is estimated an average of one million a year. The fishery is artisanal, with the use of simple tools such as the trap, net, line, etc. The main species of fish are captured electric catfish (Malapterurus electricus), fish of the family Mormyridae, etc. They are either consumed in the localities for food reasons or passed in Pointe-Noire, the city where the fish demand is very strong for mercantile reasons. Relationship between the wreck of small-scale fishing equipment and ghost fishing in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) with palliative proposals for a better long-lasting management of biodiversity Auteur(s) : Bouchereau, Jean-Luc Wuttichaï, Boussaree Auteurs secondaires : Systématique, adaptation, évolution (SAE) ; Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Ghost fishing and its consequences are little known in the French West Indies. In Guadeloupe, no allegation concerning ghost fishing was made public to date. In the absence of objective studies about this phenomenon, it is impossible to quantify the impact of these lost gears on the resource (Chaves et al. 2006). However, the characteristics of small-scale fishing existing in this area let think that it happens indeed that fishing machines are lost: - weather constraints, sometimes of catastrophic type (storms, hurricanes). The fishermen fix less racks (traps) during the period preceding the hurricane season in preparation for possible loss (Komla-Soukha and Bouchereau 2007). Of the 40 000 Caribbean traps around Guadeloupe, about 20 000 are lost each year during hurricane season, but continue to catch fish for many months (Burke and Maidens 2004); - accidents (most common causes after the literature) occurring during a fishing operation are events already well orally brought back (Macfayden et al. 2009); - the voluntary abandonment at sea of material by the fisherman for convenience reasons; - the consequences of conflicts of use (thefts, destruction of fishing gears, boardings of ships). It is the case in the Caribbean area in connection with the interactions related to the stake on resources exploitation (Blanchet et al. 2002). Sediment pollution impacts sensory ability and performance of settling coral-reef fish Auteur(s) : O’Connor, J. Jack Lecchini, David Beck, Hayden J. Cadiou, Gwenael Lecellier, Gael Booth, David J. While the effect of increased sedimentation on the settlement of coral species is well studied, little is known about the impact on larval fish. Here, the effect of a laterite “red soil” sediment pollutant on settlement behaviour and post-settlement performance of reef fish was tested. In aquarium tests that isolated sensory cues, we found significant olfaction-based avoidance behaviour and disruption of visual cue use in settlement-stage larval fish at 50 mg L−1, a concentration regularly exceeded in situ during rain events. In situ light trap catches showed lower abundance and species richness in the presence of red soil, but were not significantly different due to high variance in the data. Prolonged exposure to red soil produced altered olfactory cue responses, whereby fish in red soil made a likely maladaptive choice for dead coral compared to controls where fish chose live coral. Other significant effects of prolonged exposure included decreased feeding rates and body condition. These effects on fish larvae reared over 5 days occurred in the presence of a minor drop in pH and may be due to the chemical influence of the sediment. Our results show that sediment pollution of coral reefs may have more complex effects on the ability of larval fish to successfully locate suitable habitat than previously thought, as well as impacting on their post-settlement performance and, ultimately, recruitment success. Starting in the 1970s, the fishery evolved from a seasonal activity practiced on foot during flooding and using traditional traps to year-round dugout canoe operated lake fisheries using nets. The paper analyses the drivers of this change. After having rejected the simplistic technocratic hypothesis that technical innovation equals progress, the paper examines the relevance of the productivity of the different fishing techniques in the light of the evolution of the role of fisheries in the village economy. During the change-over period, the national and international economy deprives the villages of their main habitual sources of cash income. In the absence of any alternative, fisheries imposed themselves as the unique source of cash income, a function they can only fulfil if practiced year-round and this can only be achieved using canoes and nets. However, the perception of the causes of these changes in the villages is differentiated. For those who initiated the change-over, and who are now of an advanced age, the main driver of the transition to nets was the empowerment of the youth versus the elders. Such an interpretation resonates well with the economic determinants. However, it requires considering the modernisation process as a contextualised multi-sided expression of market globalisation. Typologie de l'activité de Pêche en Guadeloupe Auteur(s) : Maguer, Cedric Reynal, Lionel Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : University of Miami Résumé : This work aims to describe fishing activity in Guadeloupe through a typology. The samply unit y is the landing represented by a profile of specific composition. Using multivariate analysis methods allows to synthesize this fishing multi specises and multi fishing tackles. Principal Component Analysis and classification regroup landings. Then, segmentation method separateses classes by species composition. Typology is obtained by association of classes and tackles. The contraist between landings of reef fishes realized with traps and those which search for pelagics is clearly shown. Landings of queen conch and landings without fishes are separated in two classes. Crustacés profonds capturés aux casiers aux Antilles Françaises Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Paulmier, Gerard Résumé : For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations earned out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks arc not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura, and to the orders Isopoda and Amphipoda. It is intended for fishermen and other socio-professionals of the fishing industry. It should enable them to identify and name these previously unexploited varieties of crustacea to facilitate their sale in local markets.

Age and growth of blackfin tuna (Thunnus atianticus) caught under moored fish aggregating devices, around Martinique Island Auteur(s) : Doray, Mathieu Stequert, Bernard Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Daily growth increments measured in the otolith of Thunnus atlanticus were used to estimate the age and growth of individuals. which were sampled from an artisanal fishery operating around fish aggregating devices (FADs) moored off Martinique Island. In this study, 76 otoliths were analysed for fish ranging from 20 to 68 cm fork lengths (FL). The fish were caught using trolling lines at depths ranging from 0 to 10 m. Counts were made, under a light microscope, on the external part of the transverse section of the sagittae, from the primordium to the ventral edge. The mean coefficient of variation of the age reading was 2.4%. To validate readings, the number of increments for 11 individuals was counted using both optic and scanning electron microscopes. The calculated relationship between readings of both methods was found to be linear, with a slope of 1.03 and R-2 = 0.99. Frequency of growth increment formation could not be validated. Growth rates derived from otolith readings were, however, compared to those obtained using a modal progression analysis, which was performed on the length-frequency distributions of the landings over a period of two months. The corroboration between the growth rates was good. One increment was assumed to represent one day. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth curve for both sexes were L-infinity = 71.4 cm FL, k = 0.002 day(-1) and tau(0) = -80 days. According to our results, there is no evidence that Martinican moored FADs act as ecological traps for blackfin tuna. Instead, young blackfin tuna probably leave the vicinity of Martinican moored FADs to undergo a trophic migration at 7 to 8 month-old, and then come back about 8 months later to breed in the Lesser Antilles area. Étude sédimentologique et méiobenthos d'un écosystème lagunaire modifié par un récif artificiel à vocation aquacole : l'acadja Auteur(s) : Guiral, D Gourbault, N Helleouet, Mn Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : In developing countries, recourse to extensive aquaculture systems based on the exploitation of natural aquatic food webs is currently the subject of considerable interest. In this connection, the construction of artificial reefs (known as Acadja) for the development on substrates of living communities, and the utilization of this new production to enhance fish growth have been evaluated in Cote d'Ivoire. This paper describes the granulometric, chemical and biological transformation of the sedimentary ecosystem as a consequence of this practice. In the artificial habitat, an increase in the sedimentation rate of the mineral fraction (definitive trapping of particle resuspension generated by the waves and induced by the wind) and of the organic fraction (direct and indirect sedimentation of the epiphytic biomass) constitutes the starting point of significant modifications in epibenthic communities. In the Acadja, the meiofauna, dominated by nematodes and copepods, is somewhat less diversified, some groups being absent or poorly represented (turbellarians, gastrotrichs, ostracods). These characteristics were confirmed by a specific study of the nematode assemblages. In fact, the relatively high diversity of the nematode community in the natural lagoon sediment (dominated seasonally by Paraphanolaimus, Anonchus et Daptonema) contrasts with low diversity in the Acadja sediment, where the community is always dominated by Theristus sp. This lower specific diversity generates a reduction of the trophic types. In the Acadja, only the non-selective detritus feeders colonize the fine and organic sediment. These sedimentological and ecological transformations, which affect the entire ''brush park'' (Acadja), induce a strong eutrophication of the benthic ecosystem. Sustainable fish production in such tropical lagoons, in an environment where anaerobic processes dominate (especially sulfate-reduction), calls for strategic spatio-temporal planning to take of account of this progressive eutrophication. Temperature, selective mortality and early growth in the short-lived clupeid Spratelloides gracilis Auteur(s) : Durieux, Eric Meekan, Mark G. Ponton, Dominique Vigliola, Laurent Éditeur(s) : Wiley / Blackwell Résumé : Six cohorts of the silver-stripe round herring Spratelloides gracilis, a fast-growing and short-lived tropical clupeid, were collected as juveniles and then as adults during austral summers from November to February in 1998–1999 and 1999–2000, using light traps in the Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia. Otolith analysis allowed backcalculation of size and growth rate at age to examine the relative influences of selective mortality and water temperature on early growth. Negative sizeselective mortality and growth-selective mortality between the juvenile and the adult stages was found only in the cohort that was the smallest and slowest growing in the period immediately following hatching. Selective mortality preferentially removed members of this cohort that were smaller from age 0 to 15 days, and slower growing from 0 to 10 days, resulting in an elevation of size at age to, or even above, that of cohorts that had not undergone this process. Size and growth rate at 5 day age intervals in the first 20 days after hatching differed among cohorts within and between summers and were strongly and positively correlated (r2= 0·61–0·83) with water temperature. Faune ichtyologique comparée de deux récifs artificiels du littoral de la Ria Formosa (lagune Portugal) : résultats préliminaires Auteur(s) : Santos, M Monteiro, C Lasserre, G Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The fish assemblages of two artificial reef systems of the south coast of Algarve (Portugal) are presented, and a comparative study is made of their species richness variation according to their location off the Ria Formosa lagoon. Each system consists of a protection reef and an exploitation reef. Gillnets, traps, longline and visual census were used as sampling techniques. Both reefs showed similar species richness, in each case higher than that of Ria Formosa. No significant differences of species richness were found between the reef systems (p = 0.1). However, the exploitation reefs showed a significant difference of species richness, that was more evident when accumulated species richness was used to compare them (p = 0.01).
