Résumé : To develop shrimp fanning in French Polynesia where no indigenous commercial species of penaeid prawn exists, the first step is to select the right species according to the following criteria: maturation and spawning in captivity, mass production of post-larvae, fast growth at semi-intensive density, acceptability of artificial diet, disease resistance and hardiness. This paper presents the results on P. monodon, Fabricius, the largest Indo-Pacific species. Experiments have been conducted in the "Centre Océanologique du Pacifique" in Tahiti Island where the environmental conditions are water temperature range 25-29 C, salinity 35 ppt, pH 8.2. Résumé : The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. Our results showed that the demersal assemblages of the Gulf of Lions exhibited strong spatial structuring, mainly orientated along a bathymetric gradient. This gradient is structured around three major regions: the coast, the continental shelf and the continental slope. Despite sampling variations that occurred during the course of the study, the analysis showed a high degree of reproducibility for this spatial pattern. With the exception of Mullus surmuletus, the species considered in this investigation exhibit limited variations in their spatial distribution. Finally, in the absence of log-books covering the activities of commercial fishing vessels, these findings constitute a base of reference for the analysis of the dynamics of fishing fleets exploiting the demersal resources of the Gulf of Lions.
Ce travail porte sur une série de campagnes de chalutage de fond réalisé dans le golfe du Lion entre 1983 et 1992. Une nouvelle méthode fondée sur le couplage de la technique multitableaux STATIS et de l'analyse factorielle des correspondances (AFC) est proposée afin d'étudier l'organisation spatio-temporelle des assemblages démersaux, poissons et quelques céphalopodes, en terme de composition spécifique. Cette version AFC de STATIS a fourni une représentation claire de la part stable de l'organisation spatiale des assemblages. De plus, elle nous a permis d'appréhender les variations interannuelles de la distribution de chaque population autour de la structure de référence. Nos résultats montrent que les assemblages démersaux du golfe du Lion présentent une forte structuration spatiale, principalement orientée selon un gradient bathymétrique. Ce dernier est structuré en trois grandes régions: la côte, le plateau continental et le talus continental. En dépit des variations d'échantillonnage survenues au cours de la période d'étude, l'analyse a mis en évidence une forte reproductibilité de ce schéma d'organisation. A l'exception de Mullus surmuletus, les espèces considérées dans ce travail présentent des variations limitées de leur distribution spatiale. Enfin, en l'absence de livres de bord sur l'activité des navires professionnels, ces résultats constituent une base de référence pour l'analyse de la dynamique des flottilles exploitant les ressources démersales dans le golfe du Lion.

Résumé : Choice of sampling method and survey period can have an important impact on the perception of the structure and dynamics of an ecological community. For the Celtic Sea fish assemblage we compared data obtained by three different trawl surveys: an autumn groundfish survey with a GOV trawl, and a spring and an autumn groundfish survey, both carried out with a Portuguese high-headline trawl. Time-series of abundance estimates were not consistent among surveys for all species and were generally very noisy. An analysis of variance components showed that the sampling method contributed more to the variance in abundance estimates compared to survey period, interannual variability, or even sampling variance. Overall community assessments based on indicators such as proportions of non-commercial and piscivorous species, and the proportion of benthic species showed similar trends for all data series. The shape of the size spectrum based on abundances per length class summed over all fish species, although stable over time, was highly sensitive to the sampling method. With the exception of size spectra, community indicators for marine fish assemblages monitored by surveys seem to be robust to survey period and trawling gear, but species abundance trends are method dependent.

Résumé : The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes. They had a greater power than survey data to detect recent changes, showing that fishers' perceptions have great potential as early warning signals.

Résumé : Long-line fishing has been growing on the island of La Réunion since the beginning of the 1990s. The target species is the swordfish (Xiphias gladius), fished mainly in the tropical waters surrounding the island between longitudes 45 degree E and 60 degree E, and latitudes 17 degree S and 27 degree S. From 1998 to 2000, a finalised research programme enabled the collection of precise data concerning the lines' positions and the parameters of the fishing efforts: 3,602 nettings were thus informed by the catches (in numbers of individuals caught) and 12 descriptive variables of the effort. In parallel with this collection effort, satellite maps that described the ocean's landscape of this region of the Indian Ocean exploited by La Réunion's fisheries were made available to sailors and scientists. Extractions from these environmental variables were made at the fishing lines' positions, which allowed us to propose 20 variables describing the environmental conditions of swordfish catches applied to the nettings. In an early part of this study, after a descriptive analysis and a first selection of the variables, we used several GAM (Generalised Additive Models) to model the respective effects of effort and environmental variables on the variability of swordfish catches. We thus highlighted the predominance of factors linked to fishermen (fishing effort) on oceanographic factors in the explanation of this variability. Following these results, a summary on the biology and ecology of the swordfish was proposed in order to draw up hypotheses on the characteristics of this species' population in the Indian Ocean. The aspects linked to the individual behaviour and movements of the population were particularly highlighted. In a latter part of this study and in order to complete the empirical approach by an exploratory constructivist approach, we proposed a modelling tool in order to simulate the possible movements of individuals within the oceanic landscape described by the available satellite maps. After reading in the literature about the various forms of modelling the movements of the large pelagics, we developed an original computer modelling architecture of the multi-agent type that made it possible to manipulate in a dynamic way the satellite maps (and derived products), the individual movements of "animats" whose behaviours were based on this environmental information, and agents that clarify the process of long-line fishing in a geographical way. The computer model that was implemented (MUFINS, for MUlti-Fish INdian ocean Simulator) was next used by calibrating the behaviour of the animats on the real data originally from the analysis of commercial catches proposed in the first part, using robust techniques based on fuzzy logic. The results of the simulations were compared, on the one hand, with the large-scale hypotheses of movement proposed in the first part, and, on the other hand, to swordfish catches both real and corrected for the effect of the fishing effort modelled by the GAM models. Even if the results of these simulations in this study do not allow for proposing convincing interpretations of the underlying processes, the MUFINS tool showed its ability to address questions associated with the swordfish's behaviour in the tropical oceanic landscape and to the effects of scale transfers between the individual level and the collective level. We now envisage its use in a more operational framework, as an interface for dialogue between fishermen and scientists with a goal of sustainable management of the resource.
La peche palangriere s'est developpee a l'ile de La Reunion depuis le debut des annees 1990. L'espece cible est l'espadon (Xiphias gladius), principalement exploite dans les eaux tropicales autour de l'ile entre les longitudes 45 degree E et 60 degree E, et les latitudes 17 degree S et 27 degree S. De 1998 a 2000, un programme de recherche finalisee a permis de collecter des informations precises concernant les positions des lignes et les parametres de l'effort de peche : 3602 filages sont ainsi renseignes par les captures (en nombre d'individus captures) et 12 variables descriptives de l'effort. En parallele de cet effort de collecte, des cartes satellitales ont pu etre mises a la disposition des marins et des scientifiques, decrivant le paysage oceanique de cette region de l'ocean Indien exploitee par la pecherie reunionnaise. Des extractions de ces variables environnementales ont ete effectuees aux positions des lignes de peche, nous permettant de proposer 20 variables descriptives des conditions environnementales de captures d'espadon appliquees aux filages. Dans une premiere partie de ce travail, apres une analyse descriptive et une premiere selection des variables, on a modelise par plusieurs modeles GAM (Generalized Additive Models) les effets respectifs des variables d'effort et des variables environnementales sur la variabilite des captures d'espadon. On a ainsi mis en evidence la predominance des facteurs lies aux pecheurs (effort de peche) sur les facteurs oceanographiques dans le caractere explicatif de cette variabilite. A la suite de ces resultats, une synthese sur la biologie et l'ecologie de l'espadon a ete proposee afin de degager des hypotheses sur les caracteristiques de la population de cette espece dans l'ocean Indien. Les aspects lies au comportement individuel et aux deplacements de la population ont ete particulierement mis en evidence. Dans une deuxieme partie de ce travail et afin de completer l'approche empirique par une approche constructiviste exploratoire, nous avons propose un outil de modelisation afin de simuler les deplacements possibles d'individus au sein du paysage oceanique decrit par les cartes satellitales disponibles. Apres avoir passe en revue dans la litterature les differentes formes de modelisation des deplacements des grands, pelagiques, nous avons developpe une architecture originale de modelisation informatique de type multi-agents permettant de manipuler de maniere dynamique les cartes satellitales (et les produits derives), les mouvements individuels < d'animats >, dont les comportements sont bases sur cette information environnementale, et des agents qui explicitent le processus de capture palangriere de maniere geographique. Le modele informatique ainsi implemente (MUFINS, pour MUlti-Fish INdian ocean Simulator) a ensuite ete utilise en calibrant les comportements des animats sur les donnees reelles issues de l'analyse des captures commerciales proposee en premiere partie, a partir de techniques robustes basee sur la logique floue. Les resultats des simulations ont ete confrontes d'une part aux hypotheses de deplacement a grande echelle proposees en premiere partie, et d'autre part aux captures d'espadon reelles et corrigees de l'effet de l'effort de peche modelise par les modeles GAM. Meme si les resultats de simulations presentes dans ce travail ne permettent pas de proposer d'interpretations convaincantes des processus sous-jacents, l'outil MUFINS a demontre son aptitude a aborder les questions liees au comportement de l'espadon dans le paysage oceanique tropical et aux effets des transferts d'echelle entre le niveau individuel et le niveau collectif. On envisage desormais son utilisation dans un cadre plus operationnel, comme interface de dialogue entre les pecheurs et les scientifiques a des fins de gestion durable de la ressource.

Résumé : Payao is a traditional concept, which has been successfully commercialized to increase the landings of several species valuable to the country's export and local industries. It has become one of the most important developments in pelagic fishing that significantly contributed to increased tuna production and expansion of purse seine and other fishing gears. The introduction of the payao in tuna fishing in 1975 triggered the rapid development of the tuna and small pelagic fishery. With limited management schemes and strategies, however, unstable tuna and tuna-like species production was experienced in the 1980s and 1990s. In this paper, the evolution and development of the payao with emphasis on the technological aspect are reviewed. The present practices and techniques of payao in various parts of the country, including its structure, ownership, distribution, and fishing operations are discussed. Monitoring results of purse seine/ringnet operations including handline using payao in Celebes Sea and Western Luzon are presented to compare fishing styles and techniques, payao designs and species caught. The fishing gears in various regions of the country for harvesting payao are enumerated and discussed. The inshore and offshore payaos in terms of sea depth, location, designs, fishing methods and catch composition are also compared. Fishing companies and fisherfolk associations involved in payao operation are presented to determine extent of utilization and involvement in the municipal and commercial sectors of the fishing industry. The issues and problems concerning the use of payao, and its biological, economic impact as well as management aspect are presented. Recommendations are given for future research and actions.

Résumé : The red drum Sciaenops ocellatus is an estuarine-dependent sciaenid that has supported important recreational and commercial fisheries for many years. Since the 1980s, this species has been farmed in different regions of the world and studies have been conducted to find natural ways to improve its culture. Sciaenops ocellatus is well known for making calls but studies on this characteristic have been mainly restricted to passive acoustics. The aim of this study was to provide acoustic-related information that could be useful in rearing practices. We have studied in detail fish calling characteristics, described their sound-producing mechanism and tested the recordings in different kinds of confinements (floating cages, concrete and fibreglass tanks). Contrary to previous studies, calls were recorded mainly in the morning, between 06:00 and 09:00. Sounds are made only by males; females do not have sound-producing apparatus. The anatomy, muscle ultrastructure data and calling characteristics show conclusively that calls result from the contraction of high speed muscles which are characterized by the very small diameter (7 μm) of the muscle cells. Preliminary results suggest sound characteristics can give information on the fish physiology but further studies are needed. The effects of resonance of fibreglass tanks are experimentally highlighted, showing unequivocally that all the characteristics of fish calls are completely distorted, even in big tanks (13 m3). These findings should be taken into account when using pre-recorded sounds in the rearing of this species because it can affect communication during courtship activity.

Résumé : The flat oyster Ostrea edulis L. is the indigenous oyster of the Atlantic as well as the Mediterranean coasts of Europe. Its commercial exploitation dates back to Antiquity but its breeding is now threatened by two parasitic protozoa, among which Bonamia ostreae. Various aspects of the genetics of this species' natural and farmed populations have been studied with the aid of microsatellite markers. At first, the implementation and the screening of two partial genomic libraries made it possible to identify 28 new microsatellite loci. Analysis of the segregation of 12 of these loci and of two enzymatic loci shows that most microsatellite loci are transmitted in a Mendelian way, but some loci have significant segregation distortions. Moreover, seven linkage groups, of which four contain at least two markers, were identified in Ostrea edulis. The genetic variability of three populations selected for one or two generations for resistance to Bonamia ostreae was analysed with the aid of 5 microsatellite loci. In spite of the absence of genealogical data, we have shown that these selected populations were descended from a very low number of founding genitors (from 3 to 15 depending on the population) and for two populations, we were able to reconstruct the genealogy and the relationships between the individuals were identified. These selected populations have, in addition to a very low genetic variability, real and at times high levels of consanguinity. These results have a significant implication for the continuation of the selection programme (consanguinity management, augmentation of genetic variability by introducing wild genitors). The geographical structuring of the genetic variability of natural populations of Ostrea edulis has been analysed with the aid of 5 microsatellite loci on a sampling covering almost the entire distribution area of the species (from Norway to the Adriatic Sea). The results are consistent with those published in the literature and using enzymatic markers. The populations show a low level of differentiation that could correspond to a model of isolation by distance. The Atlantic populations, which have a reduced polymorphism, could be descended from post-glacial recolonisation from Mediterranean populations that had survived the glaciations of the Quaternary Period. The current distribution of flat oyster populations is surely also subject to anthropogenic activities. Finally, the genetic bases of the heterozygosis-growth correlation were studied in a natural population with the aid of enzymatic and microsatellite markers. Although leads favouring the direct contribution of enzymatic loci have been found, biases in the sampling design make it impossible to come to a formal conclusion. However, this study has made it possible to show that the capture of individuals over a short period (around ten days) leads to a sampling of a population descended from a very low number of founding genitors, in contradiction with the generally accepted idea that marine bivalve populations are large panmictic populations with significant, efficient numbers. These results confirm in a natural population the observations of a significant reduction of efficient sizes in hatchery populations.
L'huître plate Ostrea edulis L. est l'huître indigène des côtes européennes aussi bien atlantiques que méditerranéennes. Son exploitation commerciale remonte à l'Antiquité mais son élevage est aujourd'hui menacé par deux protozoaires parasites dont Bonamia ostreae. Différents aspects de la génétique des populations naturelles et cultivées de cette espèce ont été étudiés à l'aide de marqueurs microsatellites. Dans un premier temps, la réalisation et le criblage de deux banques génomiques partielles ont permis l'identification de 28 nouveaux locus microsatellites. L'analyse de la ségrégation de 12 de ces locus et de deux locus enzymatiques montre que la plupart des locus microsatellites sont transmis de façon mendélienne, mais certains locus présentent des distorsions de ségrégation importantes. Par ailleurs, sept groupes de liaison dont quatre contiennent au moins deux marqueurs ont été identifiés chez Ostrea edulis. La variabilité génétique de trois populations sélectionnées depuis une ou deux générations pour une résistance à Bonamia ostreae a été analysée à l'aide de 5 locus microsatellites. Malgré l'absence de données généalogiques, nous avons montré que ces populations sélectionnées étaient issues d'un très faible nombre de géniteurs fondateurs (de 3 à 15 selon les populations) et pour deux populations, la généalogie a pu être reconstituée et les liens de parenté entre les individus ont été identifiés. Ces populations sélectionnées présentent, outre une très faible variabilité génétique, des niveaux de consanguinité réels et parfois élevés. Ces résultats ont une implication importante pour la continuation du programme de sélection (gestion de la consanguinité, augmentation de la variabilité génétique par introduction de géniteurs sauvages). La structuration géographique de la variabilité génétique des populations naturelles d'Ostrea edulis a été analysée à l'aide de 5 locus microsatellites sur un échantillonnage couvrant presque toute l'aire de répartition de l'espèce (de la Norvège à la Mer Adriatique). Les résultats sont cohérents avec ceux publiés dans la littérature et utilisant des marqueurs enzymatiques. Les populations montrent un niveau de différenciation faible qui pourrait correspondre à un modèle d'isolement par la distance. Les populations atlantiques, qui présentent un polymorphisme réduit, pourraient être issues de recolonisation post-glaciaire à partir de populations méditerranéennes ayant survécu aux glaciations du Quaternaire. La répartition actuelle des populations d'huître plate est certainement aussi soumise aux actions anthropiques. Enfin, les bases génétiques de la corrélation hétérozygotie-croissance ont été étudiées dans une population naturelle à l'aide de marqueurs enzymatiques et microsatellites. Bien que des pistes en faveur de la contribution directe des locus enzymatiques aient été trouvées, des biais dans le dispositif expérimental ne permettent pas de conclure de façon formelle. Cependant, cette étude a permis de montrer que le captage d'individus sur une faible période (une dizaine de jours) conduit à l'échantillonnage d'une population issue d'un nombre très réduit de géniteurs fondateurs, en contradiction avec l'idée reçue que les populations de bivalves marins sont de larges populations panmictiques à effectif efficace important. Ces résultats confirment dans une population naturelle les observations de réduction importante des tailles efficaces dans des populations d'écloserie.

Résumé : The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a commercially important species, with production based on both fisheries and aquaculture. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models have been extensively applied to study its energetics but such applications require a deep understanding of its nutrition, from filtration to assimilation. Being filter feeders, mussels show multiple responses to temporal fluctuations in their food and environment, raising questions that can be investigated by modeling. To provide a better insight into mussel–environment interactions, an experiment was conducted in one of the main French growing zones (Utah Beach, Normandy). Mussel growth was monitored monthly for 18 months, with a large number of environmental descriptors measured in parallel. Food proxies such as chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon and phytoplankton were also sampled, in addition to non-nutritious particles. High-frequency physical data recording (e.g., water temperature, immersion duration) completed the habitat description. Measures revealed an increase in dry flesh mass during the first year, followed by a high mass loss, which could not be completely explained by the DEB model using raw external signals. We propose two methods that reconstruct food from shell length and dry flesh mass variations. The former depends on the inversion of the growth equation while the latter is based on iterative simulations. Assemblages of food proxies are then related to reconstructed food input, with a special focus on plankton species. A characteristic contribution is attributed to these sources to estimate nutritional values for mussels. M. edulis shows no preference between most plankton life history traits. Selection is based on the size of the ingested particles, which is modified by the volume and social behavior of plankton species. This finding reveals the importance of diet diversity and both passive and active selections, and confirms the need to adjust DEB models to different populations and sites.

Résumé : Scientific fisheries surveys routinely identify a large diversity of commercial and non-commercial benthic megainvertebrates that could provide useful information for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) descriptors. Species is obviously the basic taxonomic level to which most ecological studies and theories refer. Identification at this level of organization is indeed always preferred over any other taxonomic level. Nevertheless, aggregation of species to higher taxonomic levels may be unavoidable sometimes, since errors of identification are known or suspected to occur in many surveys. Using analyses of taxonomic sufficiency (identification of organisms at various taxonomic resolutions) and groups of morphospecies (taxa identified easily by non-experts on the basis of evident morphological traits), this study aims to quantify the loss of ecological information incurred by partial identification of benthic megafauna in bottom trawl surveys in order to put such data to good use. The analyses were conducted on five scientific surveys representing a large range of geographical areas (from 150 km2 to 150 000 km2) and environmental conditions. Results show that genus, family and, particularly, morphospecies are good surrogates for species identification in community analyses. We suggest that bottom trawl surveys can provide reliable megafauna data that may usefully complete those obtained by grab surveys. The use of morphospecies could lead to new strategies, combining different datasets to provide indicators for MSFD descriptors (e.g. D6).

Résumé : The populations of fishes dwelling near the sea bed (demersal species) on the continental shelf are usually the object of intense commercial exploitation. The Bay of Biscay shelf is no exception. Hence, populations suffer from this exploitation. Moreover, the general role played by hydro-climatic variations in the regulation of the abundance of demersal fish populations (population dynamics) is traditionally admitted. In the Bay of Biscay, a warming of the surface water has been observed over the three last decades (Koutsikopoulos et al., 1998). Climate change therefore has potential consequences on fish communities. Thus, the structure and dynamics of fish populations on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay are susceptible to suffer both from the effects of a human activity (fishing) and of climate change (warming). Fisheries should therefore suffer more or less from these changes depending on their adaptation capacity.
Les peuplements de poissons vivant à proximité du fond (espèces démersales) sur le plateau continental font généralement l'objet d'une exploitation commerciale intense. Le plateau du Golfe de Gascogne n'échappe pas à cette règle. Les populations y subissent donc les effets de l'exploitation. Par ailleurs, le rôle général des variations hydro-climatiques dans la régulation de l'abondance des populations démersales de poissons (la dynamique des populations) est classiquement admis. Dans le Golfe de Gascogne, un réchauffement des eaux de surface au cours des trois dernières décennies est observé (Koutsikopoulos et al., 1998). Le changement climatique a donc des conséquences potentielles sur la communauté de poissons. Ainsi, la structure et la dynamique du peuplement de poissons du plateau continental du Golfe de Gascogne sont susceptibles de répondre à la fois aux effets d'une activité humaine (la pêche) et du changement climatique (réchauffement). Les pêcheries devraient donc subir ces changements selon leur capacité d'adaptation.

Résumé : P. acidilactici MA 18/5M is a dietary probiotic (BACTOCELL®) which has shown its efficiency on several terrestrial and aquatic species. The present thesis aimed to investigate more fully the effects of this probiotic on cultured penaeid shrimps. For this study, we chose a global approach by replacing the problem studied in a model of interactions between three compartments: the shrimp, its intestinal microflora and the probiotic. Having first defined how the probiotic should be administrated, we studied its effects under controlled laboratory conditions at several levels of Litopenaeus stylirostris biology: (i) Nutritional status and growth, (ii) associated bacterial microflora, and (iii) health status with respect to oxidative stress. Then the probiotic improves the growth of the shrimps and the feed conversion ratio. Our study shows that these effects are partially due to a better use of the feed, particularly of dietary carbohydrates, but also suggest an action on the metabolism, andor on the growth via a contribution of essential nutrients. On the other hand, although the intestinal bacterial communities seems little affected, we show an antagonism effect of the probiotic toward total and vibrionacea intestinal flora, as well as a decrease in the level of infection of shrimps during challenge with pathogenic V. nigripulchritudo. Beside, our works highlight that infection by this pathogen, led to a reduction in antioxidant defences, to a rise in oxidative damages, and to a release of mortalities within 48 hours. This oxidative stress following bacterial infection was better controlled by animals receiving the probiotic diet, and resistance of the shrimps to infection was significant improved. A nutritional hypothesis is proposed to explain such result, hypothesis based on a link between carbohydrate metabolism and antioxidant status. As a conclusion of these works, we can propose a first explanatory scenario for the effects of P. acidilactici on a penaeid shrimp. Finally probiotic's effects were assessed under a pilot scale in a commercial farm from New Caledonia currently affected by the "summer syndrome ". We confirm the improvements brought in term of zootechnical results, with in particular, a better resistance to this syndrome. This work was made possible thanks to a breeding method in floating cages, developed during this thesis, and therefore transferred, as an experimental tool, to the shrimp industry of New Caledonia.
Pediococcus acidilacticii MA18/5M est un probiotique bactérien (BACTOCELL®) qui a démontré son efficacité chez plusieurs espèces d'animaux terrestres et aquatiques. Cette thèse avait pour objectif d'investiguer plus en détails les effets de ce probiotique chez les crevettes pénéides d'élevage. Pour cette étude, nous avons choisi une approche globale replaçant la problématique dans un modèle d'interactions entre trois compartiments : la crevette, sa microflore intestinale et le probiotique. Après avoir défini les modalités d'administration, l'effet de P. acicilactici a été étudié, en conditions de laboratoire, chez la crevette Litopenaeus stylirostris, à différents niveaux: (i) statut nutritionnel et croissance, (ii) microflore bactérienne associée, et (iii) santé de l'animal à travers son statut antioxydant et son niveau de stress oxydant. Ainsi, le probiotique améliore la croissance des crevettes et l'indice de conversion de l'aliment. Notre étude montre que ces effets sont en partie liés à une meilleure utilisation de l'aliment, notamment des carbohydrates alimentaires, mais suggèrent aussi une action sur le métabolisme, et/ou sur la croissance via un apport de nutriments essentiels. D'autre part, bien que les communautés bactériennes intestinales semblent peu affectées, un effet d'antagonisme du probiotique vis-à-vis de la flore intestinale totale et vibrionacée a été montré, ainsi qu'une réduction du niveau d'infection des crevettes au cours de challenge avec le pathogène V. nigripulchritudo. Par ailleurs, nous mettons en évidence que l'infection par ce pathogène, conduit à un abaissement des défenses antioxydantes, à une élévation des dégâts oxydatifs, et au déclenchement de mortalités dans les 48 heures. Le probiotique atténue le niveau de ce stress oxydant, et améliore significativement la résistance des crevettes à l'infection. Une hypothèse nutritionnelle est proposée afin d'expliquer ce résultat, hypothèse reposant sur un lien entre le métabolisme des carbohydrates et le statut antioxydant. A l'issue de ces travaux, nous pouvons alors proposer un premier scénario explicatif des effets de P. acidilactici chez une crevette pénéide. Finalement le probiotique a été éprouvé à l'échelle pilote sur une ferme commerciale de Nouvelle-Calédonie affectée par le « syndrome d'été ». Nous confirmons les améliorations apportées en termes de résultats zootechniques, avec notamment une meilleure résistance au syndrome. Ce travail a été réalisé grâce une méthode d'élevage en cages flottantes, mis au point au cours de cette thèse, et qui a dés lors été transférée, comme outil expérimental, à la filière crevetticole Calédonienne.

Résumé : For centuries, several species of prawns and crabs have been raised from wild-caught juveniles in coastal brackish-water fish ponds in various countries of south east Asia. The Indonesian "tambaks" are well known examples of such traditional practices. In western countries, since the turn of the century, advances of marine biology and fast increase of marine fisheries enabled the development of large-scale production and release of larval stages of American and European lobsters in a fruitless attempt to restock natural populations. After the Second World War, the increasing demand for crustaceans in United States and Japan was satisfied by opening new prawn fisheries all over the world. A major breakthrough was achieved with the development of hatchery technologies for the penaeid prawn Penaeus japonicus (Hudinaga, 1942 in Japan) and the caridean prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Ling, 1969 in Malaysia), which occurred during the first decades of the second half of this century. Together with the increasing market demand in developed countries for sea food, this led to a considerable interest of both public agencies and private investors in marine shrimp and prawn culture. In western countries, a large number of pioneering commercial ventures, often based on assumptions not scientifically founded, failed. Nevertheless, the aquaculture production of prawns mainly based on wild-caught juveniles increased in South-East Asia and Central America during the 1980s. This overall positive trend should not hide important failures which occurred at a local scale, such as the Taiwanese crisis of 1988 due principally to environmental degradation, resulting in severe disease problems and a near collapse of the farming activity. Following the early period of hatchery technology development, the major scientific achievements were related to food requirements and formulation of compound diets for larvae, juveniles and adults and to a better knowledge of diseases caused by bacteria and several viruses which have been identified from hatcheries and intensive farming ponds. Additional new technological advances have emerged from recent research in the fields of physiology (endocrinology) and genetics. By far, the major part of the world production of marine crustaceans relies on penaeid prawns and, to a lesser extent, on Macrobrachium species. However, some other species of marine crustaceans have potential for aquaculture. The economic aspects of marine crustacean aquaculture should be considered together with those of the fishing industry: market prices are rather similar, depending on the quality of the product. The balance between market demand and production is an important constraint which, in turn, establishes the success of prawn farming. Since the early 1980s, crustacean aquaculture has increased tremendously in both Asia and America: the world production for 1991 approximated 700,000 tons, with more than 600,000 tons from penaeid prawn culture.
Pendant des siècles, quelques espèces de crevettes et de crabes ont été élevées à partir d'individus juvéniles capturés dans le milieu naturel, dans des bassins à poissons d'eau saumâtre de différents pays d'Asie du Sud-Est. Les « tambaks » indonésiens sont des exemples bien connus de ces pratiques traditionnelles. Dans les pays occidentaux, depuis le début du siècle, les progrès réalisés en biologie marine et la croissance rapide des pêches maritimes ont permis le développement de la production à grande échelle de stades larvaires des homards européen et américain, dans une vaine tentative de reconstitution des stocks naturels. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la demande croissante des Etats-Unis et du Japon a été satisfaite par l'ouverture de nouvelles pêcheries de crevettes dans l'océan mondial. Un progrès décisif a été réalisé avec la mise au point des techniques d'écloserie pour la crevette Pénaeidé Penaeus juponicus (Hudinaga, 1942 au Japon) et la crevette Caridé Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Ling, 1969 en Malaisie), qui sont apparues au cours des premières décennies de la seconde moitié de ce siècle. Parallèlement à la demande croissante du marché des pays développés pour les produits de la mer, ce résultat s'est traduit par un intérêt considérable porté à l'élevage des crevettes marines de la part des institutions de recherche et des investisseurs. Dans les pays occidentaux, un grand nombre de tentatives d'élevage commerciales, fondées sur des considérations non scientifiquement établies, ont échoué. Néanmoins, la production aquacole de crevettes reposant sur la capture d'animaux juvéniles dans la nature, s'est développée en Asie du Sud-Est et en Amérique Centrale au cours des années 1980. Cette tendance globalement positive ne doit pas dissimuler les faillites importantes qui se sont produites à l'échelle locale, comme la crise des élevages de Taiwan en 1988, causée principalement par une dégradation de l'environnement, entraînant l'apparition de problèmes pathologiques sévères et une disparition presque totale de l'activité d'élevage. Après la période pionnière du développement de la technologie d'écloserie, les principaux acquis scientifiques concernent les besoins alimentaires et la formulation d'aliments composés pour les larves, les jeunes et les adultes, et une meilleure connaissance des maladies bactériennes et virales qui interviennent dans les écloseries et les fermes d'élevage intensif. De nouveaux progrès techniques complémentaires ont vu le jour à la suite de recherches dans les domaines de la physiologie (endocrinologie) et de la génétique. De loin, la majeure partie de la production mondiale de Crustacés marins repose sur les crevettes Pénaeidés et, dans une moindre mesure, sur des espèces de Macrobrachium. Cependant, quelques autres espèces de Crustacés marins intéressent potentiellement l'aquaculture. Les aspects économiques de l'aquaculture de crustacés marins doivent être considérés avec ceux de l'industrie des pêches maritimes : les prix du marché sont à peu près les mêmes, et dépendent de la qualité du produit. Le rapport entre la demande du marché et la production est une contrainte importante qui à son tour, détermine les conditions du succès de l'élevage de crevettes. Depuis le début des années 1980, l'aquaculture de crustacés a augmenté considérablement en Asie et en Amérique : la production mondiale pour 1991 avoisine 700 000 tonnes, avec plus de 600 000 tonnes provenant des élevages de crevettes Pénaeidés.

Résumé : Three shrimp species, Penaeus monodon, P. stylirostris (Panama and Mexican strains) and P. vannamei have matured and spawned in captivity at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (COP) laboratory. The shrimp, originally stocked as juveniles or postlarvae, were reared to adult size in tanks and ponds and have completed the cycle: F3 generation for P. monodon, F2 for P. stylirostris (Panama strain) and P. vannamei and F1 for P. stylirostris (Mexican strain). Maturation occurs naturally under our rearing conditions or is induced by unilateral eyestalk ablation. Details are given on mating behavior, ovarian development, number of spawnings, egg viability and maintenance of captive brood stock. Partial results so far obtained for P. monodon and P. stylirostris clearly show a reared brood stock could sustain a commercial hatchery. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Résumé : Artificial Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) are known to concentrate tropical tunas. This aggregative behaviour drastically increases the vulnerability of these species to fishing. Alternatively, FADs can be used as oceanic observatories to study the aggregative behaviour of large pelagic fish. We conducted sea surveys in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) to i) establish a typology of the pelagic fish aggregations found around moored FADs ii) study their relations with their biotic and abiotic environment and the local fishery. The mean biomass of large pelagic fish aggregations was also estimated to provide scientific inputs to achieve a sustainable management of the moored FAD fishery. The first part presents the background of the study. We introduce the regional pelagic ecosystem, the aggregative behaviour of pelagic fish around FADs and the Martinican moored FAD fishery. The second part begins with a presentation of the conceptual framework of the study: the hierarchy theory. Observation scales and survey methodology are therefore described. Repeated echosounder surveys run in a star pattern were conducted around 2 moored FADs, in combination with underwater video observations, classical fishing experiments and CTD profiles. In the third part, the elements of the [moored FAD ¿ pelagic fish - environment - fishing] system and their interactions are numerically characterised in the vertical plane. The main type of pelagic fish aggregation was a large aggregation distributed in sub-surface (40-100 m) within a radius of 400 m of the FAD. This aggregation was mostly made of 60 cm FL blackfin tunas (Thunnus atlanticus). It appeared at sunrise and mostly spread away in the late afternoon. It was observed during all daytime surveys. The average density and the vertical structure of the micronektonic sound scattering layers (SSLs) were assessed locally around a FAD for 48h cycles. These SSLs descriptors showed positive correlation with the size and the abundance of the sub-surface tuna aggregation. Whereas this aggregation accounted for about 95% of the total biomass aggregated around a moored FAD, it was nearly unexploited by the local commercial fishermen. The fourth part focuses on the sub-surface tuna aggregation. A high variability of the spatial distribution of the aggregation was evidenced in the horizontal plane at daily, day to day and monthly temporal scales. These variations were related to fluctuations of the global abundance of the aggregation. The daytime average density of sub-surface tuna was modelled as a function of the distance to FAD, within an advection-diffusion framework. Based on these results, a universal kriging model was designed to assess the mean maximum daily biomass of the sub-surface tuna aggregation. This mean biomass estimate yielded 11 tons with an estimation error of 26%. To conclude, we present a hierarchical organization in space and time of a sub-surface tuna population distributed within a network of moored FADs, from micro to meso-scale. We suggest that the spatial distribution of tunas can be explained from fine to coarse-scales by behavioural processes (self-organization, feeding, aggregative behaviour) whereas their spatial distribution is mainly forced by environmental processes at broader scales.
L'utilisation de Dispositifs de Concentration de Poissons permet de provoquer la formation de larges agrégations de thonidés autour de dispositifs artificiels, ce qui augmente considérablement la vulnérabilité de ces ressources vis-à-vis de l'exploitation halieutique. Les DCP peuvent également être utilisés en tant qu'observatoires océaniques, afin d'étudier le comportement agrégatif du macronecton pélagique. Nous avons ainsi réalisé des observations autour de DCP ancrés en Martinique, afin de définir une typologie des agrégations de macronecton et de étudier leurs relations avec leur environnement biotique, abiotique et l'exploitation halieutique locale. Nous avons ensuite estimé la biomasse moyenne de macronecton agrégé autour d'un DCP ancré, afin de fournir des éléments scientifiques nécessaires à une gestion durable de ces ressources. La première partie présente le contexte de l'étude i.e. l'écosystème pélagique régional, le phénomène d'agrégation du macronecton autour des DCP et la pêche associée aux DCP ancrés en Martinique. La deuxième partie introduit la théorie de la hiérarchie qui a fourni le cadre conceptuel de l'étude et présente les échelles et méthodes d'observation. Le principal outil d'observation est un échosondeur scientifique, mis en oeuvre le long de parcours en étoile autour du DCP. Les prospections acoustiques ont été combinées à des observations vidéo sous marines, des pêches expérimentales et un suivi in-situ de l'environnement abiotique. La troisième partie présente une typologie des éléments constituant le système [DCP ancré - macronecton - environnement - pêche] dans le plan vertical et précise leurs interactions. Le type d'agrégation de macronecton dominant est une grande agrégation composée d'une majorité de thons noirs (Thunnus atlanticus) de taille moyenne (60 cm) distribuée en sub-surface (40-100 m), dans un rayon de 300 m autour de la tête des DCP. Cette agrégation se forme au lever du soleil et se disperse presque totalement dans l'après midi. Elle a été observée de jour lors de toutes les campagnes. Une corrélation positive entre la densité et la structure moyenne des couches micronectoniques diurnes évaluée localement autour du DCP au cours de 48 h et les dimensions et l'énergie acoustique de l'agrégation de thons de subs-surface a été mise en évidence. Malgré le fait que cette agrégation représente en moyenne 95 % de l'énergie acoustique du macronecton autour des DCP, elle est presque inexploitée par les pêcheurs artisans locaux. La quatrième partie met en évidence les fortes variations conjointes de la distribution spatiale dans le plan horizontal de la densité de l'agrégation de thons de sub-surface et de son abondance globale. Ces variations ont été observées au cours du cycle nycthéméral et aux échelles inter-journalières et mensuelles. La distribution spatiale moyenne de la densité diurne de l'agrégation en fonction de la distance au centre de gravité de l'agrégation est cependant très stable et peut être modélisée au moyen d'une équation d'advection-diffusion. Un modèle de krigeage universel, utilisant les résultats du modèle d'advection-diffusion, a permis d'évaluer la biomasse maximale journalière moyenne de l'agrégation de thons de sub-surface à une dizaine de tonnes, avec un coefficient de variation d'estimation de 26%. Nous proposons une représentation hiérarchique synthétique de la distribution spatiale d'une sous-population de thons dans un réseau de DCP ancrés de la micro à la méso-échelle. Nous suggérons que la distribution spatiale des thons est déterminée principalement à l'échelle fine (100m-1km) et à l'échelle grossière (1-10 km) par des processus comportementaux (auto-organisation, agrégation, nutrition) et par des processus environnementaux à échelle plus large.
