![]() | A bio-economic model for the ecosystem-based management of the coastal fishery in French Guiana Auteur(s) : Cisse, Abdoul Gourguet, Sophie Doyen, L. Blanchard, Fabian Pereau, J. -c. Éditeur(s) : Cambridge Univ Press Résumé : This paper offers a theoritical and empirical model of ecosystem-based fishery management. A multi-species and multi-fleet integrating Lotka-Volterra trophic dynamics as well as production and profit assessments is developed and applied to the coastal fishery of French Guiana. This small-scale fishery constitutes a challenging example with high fish biodiversity, several non-selective fleets and a potentially increasing local food demand due to demographic growth. The dynamic model is calibrated with 13 species and four fleets using monthly catch and effort data from 2006 to 2009. Several contrasted fishing scenarios including status quo, total closure, economic and viable strategies are then simulated. They are compared from the viewpoints of both biodiversity preservation and socioeconomic performance, assuming fixed landing prices and fixed costs. We show that fishing outputs, including food supply and fleet profitability, can be sustained on average but a loss of species cannot be avoided. The flat oyster Ostrea edulis L. is the indigenous oyster of the Atlantic as well as the Mediterranean coasts of Europe. Its commercial exploitation dates back to Antiquity but its breeding is now threatened by two parasitic protozoa, among which Bonamia ostreae. Various aspects of the genetics of this species' natural and farmed populations have been studied with the aid of microsatellite markers. At first, the implementation and the screening of two partial genomic libraries made it possible to identify 28 new microsatellite loci. Analysis of the segregation of 12 of these loci and of two enzymatic loci shows that most microsatellite loci are transmitted in a Mendelian way, but some loci have significant segregation distortions. Moreover, seven linkage groups, of which four contain at least two markers, were identified in Ostrea edulis. The genetic variability of three populations selected for one or two generations for resistance to Bonamia ostreae was analysed with the aid of 5 microsatellite loci. In spite of the absence of genealogical data, we have shown that these selected populations were descended from a very low number of founding genitors (from 3 to 15 depending on the population) and for two populations, we were able to reconstruct the genealogy and the relationships between the individuals were identified. These selected populations have, in addition to a very low genetic variability, real and at times high levels of consanguinity. These results have a significant implication for the continuation of the selection programme (consanguinity management, augmentation of genetic variability by introducing wild genitors). The geographical structuring of the genetic variability of natural populations of Ostrea edulis has been analysed with the aid of 5 microsatellite loci on a sampling covering almost the entire distribution area of the species (from Norway to the Adriatic Sea). The results are consistent with those published in the literature and using enzymatic markers. The populations show a low level of differentiation that could correspond to a model of isolation by distance. The Atlantic populations, which have a reduced polymorphism, could be descended from post-glacial recolonisation from Mediterranean populations that had survived the glaciations of the Quaternary Period. The current distribution of flat oyster populations is surely also subject to anthropogenic activities. Finally, the genetic bases of the heterozygosis-growth correlation were studied in a natural population with the aid of enzymatic and microsatellite markers. Although leads favouring the direct contribution of enzymatic loci have been found, biases in the sampling design make it impossible to come to a formal conclusion. However, this study has made it possible to show that the capture of individuals over a short period (around ten days) leads to a sampling of a population descended from a very low number of founding genitors, in contradiction with the generally accepted idea that marine bivalve populations are large panmictic populations with significant, efficient numbers. These results confirm in a natural population the observations of a significant reduction of efficient sizes in hatchery populations. ![]() | The Recopesca Project : a new example of participative approach to collect fisheries and in situ environmental data Auteur(s) : Leblond, Emilie Lazure, Pascal Laurans, Martial Rioual, Celine Woerther, Patrice Quemener, Loic Berthou, Patrick Éditeur(s) : Mercator Ocean Résumé : Face to the lack of data to assess precisely the spatial distribution of catches and fishing effort and for the environmental characterization of the fishing area, Ifremer has been implemented since 2005 a new project, Recopesca. It consists in fitting out a sample of voluntary fishing vessels with sensors recording data on fishing effort (and at mid-terms catches) and physical parameters such as temperature or salinity. Recopesca aims at setting up a network of sensors, for scientific purposes, to collect data and improve resources assessment and diagnostics on fisheries, and environmental data required for ecosystem-based management initiatives. The challenge was to develop sensors with no trouble for the fishermen, tough enough to be fixed up on fishing gears, self powered and autonomous. Insofar as the sample of targeted vessels intends to be representative of all the metiers and fleets, the sensors are modular and scalable to collect new data. Different sensors have been implemented: (i) a temperature-salinity sensor, able to record physical parameters, depth and duration of immersion, for passive and active gears, and (ii) a specific sensor to record number or length of passive gears. A GPS monitors the position of the vessels and the temperature or salinity profiles and series. Each sensor is equipped with a radio device transferring the data to a receiver on-board, called “concentrator” that sends the data to Ifremer central databases by GPRS. An anti-rolling weigh-scale has been developed and is currently on test to record catches per species and fishing operation. The presentation will show the first data and results of this participative approach. ![]() | Combining the Biocean database for deep-sea benthic data with the online Ocean Biogeographic Information System Auteur(s) : Fabri, Marie-claire Galeron, Joelle Larour, Michel Maudire, Gilbert Éditeur(s) : Inter-Research Résumé : The Biocean database was designed to collate the extremely large volume of data collected from different deep-sea ecosystem studies conducted by Ifremer's department of 'Environnement Profond' (Deep-Sea Environment). This database comes in a 6-application package: 2 of them are used on research vessels to collect operational data, whereas the others are used to link with a core database back on land. The latter are used to: (1) manage taxonomic nomenclature, (2) monitor the identification of faunal collections, (3) fill in chemical analyses results or measurement data files and (4) add or extract data from the database. Biocean was designed to facilitate ecosystem studies in the deep sea. It represents an important new resource for deep-sea ecologists and will have wide applications in biogeography and biodiversity studies at Ifremer, but also for the international community, as faunal data are linked to the Census of Marine Life information system OBIS (Ocean Biogeographic Information System). Biogeographical analyses of Biocean data recovered through the OBIS portal evidence an evolution in the deep-sea sampling strategies more focused in limited areas and is intended to reveal ecosystems functioning. ![]() | Fish aggregating devices (FADs): good or bad fishing tools? A question of scale and knowledge FOREWORD: Tahiti International Conference "Tuna Fisheries and FADs", November 2011 Auteur(s) : Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : It is estimated that fish aggregating devices (FADs) are now used for over 40% of world tropical tuna catches, making this technique a major phenomenon for high seas fisheries worldwide, and one that has experienced great expansion over the past three decades. The question of whether the FAD is a good or a bad tool for the exploitation of marine resources depends on many parameters. To respond to this question, it is necessary to distinguish different scales of exploitation (artisanal vs. industrial) and various types of FADs (anchored vs. drifting), but it is also very important to gather more data and conduct further research on this topic to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon and of its impacts. As such, twelve years after the first international conference devoted to FADs, which was held in Martinique (French West Indies), a new multi-scalar global assessment of FAD fisheries development and a review of the progress of research in this field was deemed vital. The latest international conference, "Tuna Fisheries and Fish Aggregating Devices", was held in Tahiti in November 2011, and it was an event that welcomed nearly 150 conference attendees from 40 different countries, three ocean regions, and the Mediterranean. This is an analysis of the relevant literature gathered by the author in the bibliographic database FADBASE. Then, the major issues already addressed by the scientific community are set out, and gaps and research priorities are highlighted for anchored and drifting FADs management. ![]() | Marine turtle interaction with purse-seine fishery in the Atlantic and Indian oceans: Lessons for management Auteur(s) : Bourjea, Jerome Clermont, Sandra Delgado, Alicia Murua, Hilario Ruiz, Jon Ciccione, Stephane Chavance, Pierre Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Sci Ltd Résumé : Bycatch of endangered marine turtles is a growing issue for the management of all fisheries, including the oceanic purse-seine fishery. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal variation in bycatch rates of these species in the entire European purse-seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The study was based on data collected through observer programs from 1995 to 2011. During that period, a total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on Drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (DFADs) and 9 398 on free swimming schools, representing a global coverage of 10.3% and 5.1% of the total fishing activity in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, respectively. Moreover, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were carried out on DFADs to check turtle entanglement in the net covering DFADs. We found that the purse-seine fishery has a very low impact on marine turtles. We estimated that the annual number of individuals incidentally captured was 218 (SD = 150) and 250 (SD = 157) in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, respectively, with more than 75% being released alive. The present study also investigated the impact of DFADs; which is considered a key conservation issue for this fishery. Drifting objects may play a key role in aggregating juveniles of marine turtles, implying the need for improving their construction to avoid entanglement (e.g. avoiding nets in the structure); however, based on our study it is not the main source of incidental captures of marine turtles in this fishery. ![]() | A worldwide review of purse seine fisheries on FADs Auteur(s) : Fonteneau, Alain Pallares, P Pianet, Renaud Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This paper develops a comparative overview of the development of Fish Aggregating Devices (or fads) by the tropical purse seine fisheries in various ocean areas (Atlantic, Indian, Western and Eastern Pacific Oceans). First, a comparative review of fishery statistics is developed. Recent catches on fads by purse seiners can be estimated at a level of one million tons yearly. This comparison allows to describe the fishing zones and catch trends over time, the species composition and size taken in the various fad fisheries. Skipjack tuna is the dominant species in most fad fisheries, but significant amounts of yellowfin and bigeye are also frequently taken under fads. The paper also presents an overview of various observer data concerning the by-catches of the various fisheries using fads. This comparison allows to estimate the total worldwide yearly by-catches at about 100,000 t, and their species composition in each ocean. The fad technology used in the various oceans by purse seiners is described. The recent use of fads by purse seiners has introduced major uncertainties in most stock assessments, because analyses are hampered by changes in the fishing effort in a fad fishery, by changes in fishing zones and in sizes caught. As a last point, the management of fads presently done or in view by the various tuna bodies are introduced. It appears that the present massive use of fads worldwide is perhaps an unsafe fishing mode, which could produce serious overfishing of many stocks. There is then a consensus that the use of fads needs to be controlled and limited to sustainable biological levels. Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infectious disease caused by mycobacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). Despite numerous campaigns of vaccination by the BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine, and TB treatments, there was a resurgence of the disease since the 80s. This disruption is due to coinfection with HIV/AIDS, disorganization of health systems and the emergence of bacteria resistant to anti-TB drugs. In this context, a better understanding of the movements and changes of circulating clones of tubercle bacilli would detect faster and more relevant emerging epidemics. The control and monitoring of the disease are essential means to fight against the worldwide spread of tuberculosis. Thus the TB and Mycobacteria unit of the Pasteur Institute of Guadeloupe (IPG) has developed a database of genotypic profiles for the study of global epidemiology of tuberculosis. In this thesis, we discuss the Bioinformatical methods that have been used for the management and development of the 6th version (SITVIT2) of this database of genotypes to better understand the evolution and global dissemination of the tubercle bacillus. The database also includes several molecular markers such as MIRU-VNTRs (mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units- variable number of tandem repeats) and Spoligotype43 allowing a better description and identification of the families of genotypic profiles of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. SITVIT2 database is constantly evolving, and it currently contains epidemiological information on 111,635 clinical isolates. This database is available online at the following address: http://www.pasteur-guadeloupe.fr:8081/SITVIT2/. We also developed a database named "SITVITBovis", which is dedicated to bovine tuberculosis. This database will be accessible at: http://www.pasteur-guadeloupe.fr:8081/SITVIT_Bovis/.Alongside the development and management of databases, this work was based on several epidemiological and phylogeographic studies correlating data on drug resistance or demographic characteristics (including sex, age, HIV status, and the origin of the patient). Our research initiative is thus focused to further improve in depth phylogenetic characterization of MTBC lineages, as well as the epidemiological analysis of circulating clones to generate evidence-based geographical mapping of predominant clinical isolates of tubercle bacilli causing the bulk of the disease both at country and regional level. Further superposition of these maps with socio-political, economical and demographical available through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allows to have a precise view of prevailing disparities at the level of country or sub-region. This thesis represents an important collaboration with several researchers teams also working in the field of molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis. The long-term goal of this work is to further optimize the database structure, and sustain enriching it (including automation and ease of data entry). Optimum performance and accessibility of data in the database would reinforce efforts to control and surveillance of TB in the world. http://www.theses.fr/2014AGUY0791/document | Partager |
![]() | The skipjack fishery in Eastern Indonesia: distinguishing the effects of increasing effort and deploying rumpon FADs on the stock Auteur(s) : Monintja, Dr Mathews, Cp Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Rumpons, (fads) were widely deployed in Indonesia in the eighties. In the Halmahera area, rumpon increased cpue by 41% , landings of fish per ton of live bait increased by 24%, the consumption of diesel oil for tuna catches reduced by 46%, and profits increased from Rp 10 to 60 million by boat per year1. Tuna aggregation around rumpon increased catchability by more than 40% compared to free swimming tuna. The Halmahera skipjack fishery was assessed by combining catch and effort data from rumpon and pre-rumpon areas of the fishery, and showed that controlled effort could increase landings of approximately 15,000 t per year. Tagging data show that the Halmahera skipjack fishery is probably supported by a local unit stock. Philippine rumpons (payaos) were fished with small mesh purse seine and ring nets fishing small sized tunas 12-35 cm fl (40-50% of landings) and caused recruitment overfishing. Indonesian rumpons were fished with pole-and-line causing neither recruitment nor growth overfishing. ![]() | Do we protect biological originality in protected areas? A new index and an application to the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve Auteur(s) : Mouillot, D Culioli, J Pelletier, Dominique Tomasini, J Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Changes in biodiversity may disrupt the ecological functions performed by species assemblages. Hence, we urgently need to examine the implications of biodiversity loss not only in terms of species conservation but also in terms of sustainability of ecosystem services. The ability of protected areas to maintain local species richness has been clearly demonstrated. However, preserving goods and services provided by ecosystems requires not only the conservation of species richness but also the conservation of the most 'original' species, i.e. the ones with the highest average rarity of their attributes which are likely to perform some unique functions in ecosystems. We proposed a new conservation of biological originality (CBO) index as well as associated randomization tests to quantify the ability of piotected areas to maintain viable populations for the most original species. As an application, we used long-term fisheries data collected in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (BSNR) to determine the species which benefited from the protection reinforcement in 1999. We also estimated a set of 14 ecomorphological functional traits on the 37 fish species caught in the BSNR and we obtained a functional originality value for each species. As a result, we found that functional originality was significantly protected in the fish assemblage of the BSNR: species with the most original functional trait combinations became more abundant after 1999. Our finding suggests that protecting most original species is an insurance against functional diversity erosion in the BSNR. More generally, our new index can be used to test whether protected areas may protect preferentially the most original species and whether restorative management promotes the reestablishment of the most original species with particular habitat requirements. ![]() | Global Conservation Priorities for Marine Turtles Auteur(s) : Wallace, Bryan P. Dimatteo, Andrew D. Bolten, Alan B. Chaloupka, Milani Y. Hutchinson, Brian J. Abreu-grobois, F. Alberto Mortimer, Jeanne A. Seminoff, Jeffrey A. Éditeur(s) : Public Library Science Résumé : Where conservation resources are limited and conservation targets are diverse, robust yet flexible priority-setting frameworks are vital. Priority-setting is especially important for geographically widespread species with distinct populations subject to multiple threats that operate on different spatial and temporal scales. Marine turtles are widely distributed and exhibit intra-specific variations in population sizes and trends, as well as reproduction and morphology. However, current global extinction risk assessment frameworks do not assess conservation status of spatially and biologically distinct marine turtle Regional Management Units (RMUs), and thus do not capture variations in population trends, impacts of threats, or necessary conservation actions across individual populations. To address this issue, we developed a new assessment framework that allowed us to evaluate, compare and organize marine turtle RMUs according to status and threats criteria. Because conservation priorities can vary widely (i.e. from avoiding imminent extinction to maintaining long-term monitoring efforts) we developed a "conservation priorities portfolio" system using categories of paired risk and threats scores for all RMUs (n = 58). We performed these assessments and rankings globally, by species, by ocean basin, and by recognized geopolitical bodies to identify patterns in risk, threats, and data gaps at different scales. This process resulted in characterization of risk and threats to all marine turtle RMUs, including identification of the world's 11 most endangered marine turtle RMUs based on highest risk and threats scores. This system also highlighted important gaps in available information that is crucial for accurate conservation assessments. Overall, this priority-setting framework can provide guidance for research and conservation priorities at multiple relevant scales, and should serve as a model for conservation status assessments and priority-setting for widespread, long-lived taxa. Tropical forest yield and important part of the aerial vegetation carbon stock on earth. Measuring and understanding this stock distribution is crucial for the management of the tropical forests facing the actual environmental challenges (REDD+, carbon market).Aerial Biomass estimation of forest census plots requires few models depending on the precision of the inventory: diameter models, height models, wood density models. Spatial extrapolation between census plots relies on aerial data (satellite measurements, images) or ground-based data (geology, altitude). The uncertainty of the estimation of a region’s biomass is the result of the uncertainty brought by all these models. The aim of the thesis is to develop models and methods to estimate the biomass of a region while propagating the uncertainties. This is applied to the neo-tropical forest of French Guiana (South America, Guianas Plateau). http://www.theses.fr/2012AGUY0567/document | Partager |
Our work presented herein aimed to describe the epidemiological, etiological and therapeutic features of the stroke pathology in the Martinican Afro-Caribbean population. In 1998, the first population-based epidemiological study, ERMANCIA I, showed a 40% greater firstever stroke incidence in Martinique compared to those observed in continental France, with a high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes. These results contributed to the creation, in 2003, of the first stroke unit in the Caribbean area. In the 5_year follow-up study, we found that half of the patients had died and that 50% of survivors were affected from vascular dementia (twice compared with continental French cohorts): this figure was probably favored by severe underlying cerebral microangiopathy that amplified the cognitive impact of stroke. We also identified a failure in the secondary prevention in Martinique, certified by nearly 80% of hypertensive patients still insufficiently controlled. As a result, in 2006, we developed a well-structured stroke prevention network. The efficiency of this network was attested by the high rate of good blood pressure control (74% vs. 39%, p=0.01) and the reduced vascular morbidity and mortality rate (8.3% vs. 24%, p <0.001) after a 30-month period of activity, in comparison with control “historic” patients. In 2012, ERMANCIA II study revealed a 30% reduction of first-ever stroke incidence and a reduced mortality rate at 1 month for patients ≤55 years (8% vs. 20%, p = 0.03), compared to these observed in ERMANCIA I, likely due to improvement of primary stroke prevention and the best stroke unit management at the acute phase, respectively. Based on our etiological data, we underline: 1) the relatively high frequency of symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis, for which we propose a new definition; 2) the clinic-radiological features of stroke in the anterior choroidal artery; 3) the atypical picture of “malignant” multilacunar syndrome. On the other hand, stroke due to sickle cell disease or “trigonocephale” snakebite were only anecdotal. However, we found that carotid-bulb atypical fibromuscular dysplasia (CAFD), a very unusual previously described cause of stroke, could be responsible for up to the third of carotidterritory stroke of so-called undetermined etiology among patients ≤55 years. In addition, the relatively high rate of recurrence under antiplatelet (28% at 14 months), was dramatically reduced by endarterectomy in patients with CAFD. From a therapeutic point of view, our results showed an excess rate of post-thrombolysis symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhages in older patients, a figure probably linked to the severe underlying hypertension-triggered cerebral microangiopathy. Owing to the lack of neurointerventionnal option in Martinique, we tested a new therapeutic strategy in patients with a proximal arterial occlusion not responsive to standard IV thrombolysis, consisting in an additional administration of IV tenecteplase, 0.1mg/kg. Our preliminary results were promising, leading us to plan a randomized study. Finally, most of the characteristics of stroke in this Afro-Caribbean population are probably shared by the majority of black people. Thus, our results could have a universal impact in the understanding of stroke burden in blacks. http://www.theses.fr/2015AGUY0909/document | Partager |
Cantonment fishing is a French legal and administrative tool used to manage fisheries resources and the regulation of fishing on marine site defined. This tool was developed in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) in 1999, at the request of fishermen facing depletion of fish stocks in the coastal strip. The competent authorities on the marine environment have installed this device on eight areas spread around the island (the Atlantic coast to the Caribbean coast). Cantonment fishing is little scientifically documented to date, apart from fishery surveys conducted by scientists-biologists. It is therefore appropriate to retrace the steps of the development of this tool and analyze the first results and challenges. L'exemple de trois iles: Guadeloupe, Martinique et Curacao Auteur(s) : Reynal, Lionel Van Buurt, G Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This summary tackles the development of fisheries in the Caribbean using fads. It highlights the principal causes which explain why, in spite of more than thirty years of experimenting, fishing on fads has not developed as much as had been hoped. Whereas the deep-sea production of pelagic fish by the continental countries of the region has considerably increased since the early eighties, that of the Lesser Antilles has grown more slowly. Anchored fads have given the boats of the small-scale fisheries from three islands (Guadeloupe, Martinique and Curacao) access to these pelagic resources. The various modes of development and management of the fads observed in each island are described. The first available data are used to provide some indications of the effects of the various strategies implemented and the changes induced by this new fishing technique. ![]() | Travaux ISTPM 1954 - La pêche aux Antilles Françaises Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : A head of laboratory from the Biology Service has been entitled by the management committee of the F.I.D.O.M. to study the fishing opportunities offered in the waters of the French Caribbean, from November 1950 to May 1951. The aim of this mission was double: - on the one hand, it aimed to determine if the fauna and the geographic data of these islands were sufficient to allow the development of the fishing industry, and consequently the feeding of more than half a million individuals; - on the other hand, it aimed to try and orientate some of the large Caribbean manpower towards this new industry and to drive the existing artisanal fishermen towards a gradual modernisation of their living and working conditions through a technical education. Classical methods for satellite image analysis are inadequate for the current bulky data flow. Thus, automate the interpretation of such images becomes crucial for the analysis and management of phenomena changing in time and space, observable by satellite. Thus, this work aims at automating land cover cartography from satellite images, by expressive and easily interpretable mechanism, and by explicitly taking into account structural aspects of geographic information. It is part of the object-based image analysis framework, and assumes that it is possible to extract useful contextual knowledge from maps. Thus, a supervised parameterization methods of a segmentation algorithm is proposed. Secondly, a supervised classification of geographical objects is presented. It combines machine learning by inductive logic programming and the multi-class rule set intersection approach. These approaches are applied to the French Guiana coastline cartography. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the segmentation parameterization, but also its variability as a function of the reference map classes and of the input data. Yet, methodological developments allow to consider an operational implementation of such an approach. The results of the object supervised classification show that it is possible to induce expressive classification rules that convey consistent and structural information in a given application context and lead to reliable predictions, with overall accuracy and Kappa values equal to, respectively, 84,6% and 0,7. In conclusion, this work contributes to the automation of the dynamic cartography from remotely sensed images and proposes original and promising perpectives http://www.theses.fr/2013AGUY0671/document | Partager |
![]() | Small-scale coastal fisheries in Europe. Final report Auteur(s) : Guyader, Olivier Berthou, Patrick Koustikopoulos, C. Alban, Frederique Demaneche, Sebastien Gaspar, M Eschbaum, R Fahy, E Résumé : The necessity of improving knowledge in fisheries and especially small-scale coastal fisheries in order to analyse the conditions for their sustainable development is increasingly recognized. The three main requirements for the sustainable development of fisheries are the simultaneous present and future well being of the bio-ecological system, the human system and the management process. Knowledge on these aspects of small-scale coastal fisheries (SSCF) in Europe is generally limited, although there has been an improvement in information on the fishing sector and inshore marine resources due to the EU Data Collection Regulations (DCR) 1. SSCF are strongly represented in all EU Member States (81% and 87% of the EU 25 whole fleet is composed of vessels less than 12 and 15 meters respectively)2 and approximately 100,000 crew are involved in SSCF in Europe. SSCF are present all around the European coast, even in isolated and sensitive areas.
