Feeding behaviour of Anguilla anguilla and trophic resources in the Ingril Lagoon (Mediterranean, France) Auteur(s) : Bouchereau, Jean-Luc Marques, Catarina Pereira, Patricia Guélorget, Olivier Lourié, Sven-Michel Vergne, Yvan Auteurs secondaires : Systématique, adaptation, évolution (SAE) ; Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Ecosystèmes lagunaires : organisation biologique et fonctionnement (ECOLAG) ; Université Montpellier 2 - Sciences et Techniques (UM2) - Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Station Biologique Résumé : International audience This study focuses on the diet of the eel Anguilla anguilla, sampled during one month of each of the four seasons from autumn 1998 to summer 1999 in the Languedocian Ingril Lagoon (Gulf ot Lion). The following feeding indices were calculated based on observations of 11 categories of prey found in the contents of full stomachs: coefficient of vacuity (CV), degree of fullness (DR), occurrence frequency (PP, in %), relative abundance (N, in %) and relative weight (P, in %). A parallel monitoring of the benthic macrofauna was conducted in autumn and spring. The interpretation of the results is based on the degree III of the scale of confinement established by Guélorget & Perthuisot (1983) and on the Costello et al. (1990) method, which combines PP and N. A. anguilla mainly feeds on benthic organisms, primarily amphipods crustaceans, polychaetes, insect larvae and small fish. The eel's feeding activity is very low in November and February and usually increases during May. The trophic quality available to the eel population in the Ingril Lagoon depends on its hydrodynamic variables, which are directly related to its close communication with the sea. Changes observed in the eel's diet over this year long study illustrate an opportunist type of feeding behaviour that reflects the typical composition of the macroinvertebrate species assemblage at a given point in time. Eels consume the type of benthic prey that is most available at a given moment without using a particular feeding strategy (e.g., specialisation or generalisation). The eels adapt by shifting their diet according to the energetic resources available in the ecosystem, which vary depending on hydrological regime. Thus, the facultative catadromous migrant species Anguilla anguilla could be used as a bioindicator of changes in the biological zonation and in the available food resources in the brackish ecosystem of Ingril Lagoon during its lagoon-resident ecophase. Les Systèmes de licences de pêche : le cas de la Méditerranée française Auteur(s) : Meuriot, Eric Dremiere, Pierre-yves Meuriot, Eric Dremiere, Pierre-yves Éditeur(s) : Ifremer Résumé : The subject of this study is to examine the operation and implications of the system of licenses for bottom trawling implemented in the French Mediterranean, this compared with the context of fishing in this area during the last twenty years. The study begins with a review and assessment of the evaluation criteria proposed in the economic literature. This review of the literature is done to find an approach for analysing licensing systems. The study then recounts the main stages of the implementation of the licensing system for trawling in the Mediterranean as well as the context of fishing. After a description of the licensing system and a reminder of the objectives and arguments defended by the various participating groups, the study examines its operation as well as some of its consequences. These latter are captured as much by comparing the criteria from the theory as the objectives pursued. In conclusion, the study brings out the lessons and perspectives of the licensing system. The reader wishing to have a detailed analysis of the economic evolution of trawling in the French Mediterranean can refer specifically to the work of MEURIOT and DREMIERE (1986) meant to round out this study. Intensive marine fish farming in the Mediterranean islands : present state and perpectives Auteur(s) : Paquotte, Philippe Lacroix, Denis Éditeur(s) : Actes du colloque, April 28-30 1997 Résumé : Due to favourable environmental conditions and political will, marine fish farming has developed recently around the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean area is characterised by a large number of islands which are extremely diversified from geographical, political or socioeconomic point of views. As a matter of fact, it turns out that almost a third of the Mediterranean fish farming production comes from these islands which have proven to offer good conditions for the development of that new activity. The reasons why somany enterprises have been established on islands are very diverse. Taking advantage of good environmental conditions is the most common motivation, since islands are usually less submitted to constraints due to town extension, industry development or intensive agriculture. Moreover, as far as European Union countries are concerned, incentive policy towards ultraperipheral or late development regions has made it possible to attribute specific subsidies to islands for aquaculture in the aim of more employment and wealth. Like any other economic activity, aquaculture has to face some specific constraints due to the insular context. Transport to and from the islands is more expensive and less regular, which has a negative impact on the price competitiveness of the insular products. Local markets are often too small to make it possible for the enterprises to develop first at a domestic level and to take advantage of economies of scale. Thanks to their positive and attractive world-wide image, Mediterranean islands could promote the quality of their products on the basis of geographical origin, of quality of the environment or of specific production processes. Information networks implementation and marketing approach in terms of image are challenges Mediterranean islands have to take up in order to supply the large European seafood market with quality products. Premiers résultats et perspectives Auteur(s) : Laubier, Lucien Laubier-bonichon, Annie Éditeur(s) : Centre Océanologique de Bretagne Résumé : Over the last three decades, offshore shrimp catches have developed in a very impressive way. An important demand on the international market resulted in a slight rise in the selling prices, and lead to a rise in the exploitation of areas already exploited, as well as a search for new fishing areas. In twenty years, the world total of shrimp fisheries has more than doubled, and reached 1 024 000 tonnes in 1972 (source F.A.O., Statistiques annuelles des pêches); [...] Alternatives to taxonomic-based approaches to assess changes in transitional water communities Auteur(s) : Mouillot, D Spatharis, S Reizopoulou, S Laugier, Thierry Sabetta, L Basset, A Chi, T Éditeur(s) : John Wiley & Sons Résumé : 1. Transitional waters, described as critical transition zones because of their position at terrestrial, freshwater and marine interfaces, provide essential goods and services to the biosphere including human populations. These ecotones face increasing human influence mainly due to population density increase in coastal areas. 2. Transitional water bodies have, to date, received little attention in the development of ecological status indicators, this is a critical deficiency when trying to meet the Water Framework Directive objective of all significant water bodies achieving good ecological status by the year 2015. 3. In order to assess changes in transitional water communities many taxonomic-based indicators have already been proposed but there are a number of concerns for their use such as taxonomic classification difficulties, their unsuitability for multi-site comparisons and their inconsistent relationships with disturbance or stress. 4. Alternative methods based on body size, abundance distribution among functional groups, functional diversity and productivity descriptors are proposed. These methods offer the opportunity to compare sites with different taxonomic compositions and allow derivation of indicators related to ecological status of communities under scrutiny. 5. Finally, the suitability of these taxonomic-free descriptors to provide relevant information for each of the four main biotic compartments in coastal lagoons is discussed. The use of biomass distribution among functional groups for fish, benthos and macrophyte and to use body-size distribution for benthos and plankton is proposed.
