Génotypage des géniteurs de Lates calcarifer de Tahiti : aide à la domestication raisonnée du Loup Tropical pour la filière tahitienne Auteur(s) : Vonau, Vincent Rouxel, Catherine Saulnier, Denis Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie Nedelec, Georges Goyard, Emmanuel Résumé : The tropical seabass Lates calcarifer was introduced in Tahiti in 1984 and then was domesticated without other introduction. Three successive generations have been obtained in captivity. Tissue samples of the 38 animaIs which represent the total Tahitian broodstock were preserved in alcohol to be genotyped with four microsatellite markers (Yue et al., 2001).
Three of four described markers were successfully transferred to the laboratory of genetics of Tahiti (marker LcaM01, LcaM02, LcaM03), as the revelation technology available locally did not allow the use of LcaM04 in routine.
The results show that the genetic diversity of the tahitian broodstock is not equivalent of the one of the species, which could be explained by the small size of the founder population, which is consistant with the history of the Tahitian population. The structuration of the 4th generation into several batches obtained from different parents appears to be the minimum management procedure to limit inbreeding. A step toward the definition of ecological indicators of the impact of fishing on the fish assemblage of the Abore reef reserve (New Caledonia) Auteur(s) : Amand, Marion Pelletier, Dominique Ferrari, Jocelyne Kulbicki, Michel Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are often contemplated as a tool for the sustainable management of exploited resources and ecosystem conservation. This paper proposes an approach to establish a statistical diagnostic of the effects of MPAs on fish assemblages, and define corresponding ecological indicators. This requires choosing relevant variables (abundance, diversity, demographic parameters..) and appropriate statistical methods. The study was based on data from the Abore reef Reserve in New Caledonia. Two sets of methods: 1-inferential linear models (ANOVA, GLM): 2- Partial Least Squares (PLS) methods of regression, were used to test the effects of this MPA. PLS enabled us to test simultaneously within a model, density, species richness, biomass and mean size variables of fish community to retain the most sensitive and relevant ones. Habitat variability was also taken into account in these models. Species were grouped according to several criteria: 1-feeding habit; 2- taxonomy; 3-mobility; 4-adult size; 5-demographic strategy. No significant effect of the opening of the Abore reef to fishing was found for mobility. Feeding habit was the only criterion for which the results from the inferential models and PLS showed a significant effect of reserve status for all variables. Species richness, density, and to a lesser extent mean size, were sensitive to the removal of reserve status. but not biomass. Results from ANOVA and PLS regression were consistent but the latter allows a more holistic approach as it integrates all variables within a single model.
Consequences des recents changements de maillage sur les rendements de la flotille langoustiniere lorientaise en Mer Celtique Auteur(s) : Morizur, Yvon Charuau, Anatole Éditeur(s) : ICES-CM-1981/K:36 Résumé : Some trawlers from Lorient (France) are fishing for Nephrops at the North of 48th parallel. During the last years, the mesh size of their cod-end changed twice. It increased from 45 mm to 60 mm at the end of year 1978 and to 70 mm at the end of year 1979.'. Whereas the change to 60 mm seems to have no immediate- effect on Nephrops landings, the increase from 60 mm to 70 mm results in a loss in Nephrops landings of 30-40 %. That loss in Nephrops landings goes with an increase in some by-catches species as whiting, cod and hake. Open atlantic coast of Europe - a century of introduced species into french waters Auteur(s) : Goulletquer, Philippe Bachelet, G Sauriau, Pierre-guy Noel, P Résumé : This paper aims to establish a comprehensive Iist of exotic species introduced into Atlantic French waters over the last century as well as their origin, and the vectors involved in the process. At least 104 non indigenous species have been recorded in the Atlantic and Channel coastal wa ters. Among those species, only a few (Bonamia ostreae, Crepidula fornicata) have resulted in highly significant negative impacts and side-effects on the coastal activity. In contrast, the introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas can be considered to be successful, sustaining a large industry counting more than 4,000 companies and 150,000 tons of yearly production. Over the last decade, French and European laws have strenghtened the controls over exotic species introductions, limiting their impacts. These new regulations and increased awareness from the scientific community with regard to coastal industry and biodiversity have reduced significantly the cases of deliberate introduction, while the risk analysis requirement has improved the overall management. However, in spite of these improvements, cases remain significant, mostly by accidental and/or increased vectors of introduction such as the ballast waters and sediment. Moreover, global changes should now be considered as a major issue, Iikely inducing future geographic distribution changes over a large European coastal range. Understanding the invasion population dynamics for exotic species remains a challenging research issue currently addressed by the French INVABIO multidisciplinary program. A bio-economic model for the ecosystem-based management of the coastal fishery in French Guiana Auteur(s) : Cisse, Abdoul Gourguet, Sophie Doyen, L. Blanchard, Fabian Pereau, J. -c. Éditeur(s) : Cambridge Univ Press Résumé : This paper offers a theoritical and empirical model of ecosystem-based fishery management. A multi-species and multi-fleet integrating Lotka-Volterra trophic dynamics as well as production and profit assessments is developed and applied to the coastal fishery of French Guiana. This small-scale fishery constitutes a challenging example with high fish biodiversity, several non-selective fleets and a potentially increasing local food demand due to demographic growth. The dynamic model is calibrated with 13 species and four fleets using monthly catch and effort data from 2006 to 2009. Several contrasted fishing scenarios including status quo, total closure, economic and viable strategies are then simulated. They are compared from the viewpoints of both biodiversity preservation and socioeconomic performance, assuming fixed landing prices and fixed costs. We show that fishing outputs, including food supply and fleet profitability, can be sustained on average but a loss of species cannot be avoided. The flat oyster Ostrea edulis L. is the indigenous oyster of the Atlantic as well as the Mediterranean coasts of Europe. Its commercial exploitation dates back to Antiquity but its breeding is now threatened by two parasitic protozoa, among which Bonamia ostreae. Various aspects of the genetics of this species' natural and farmed populations have been studied with the aid of microsatellite markers. At first, the implementation and the screening of two partial genomic libraries made it possible to identify 28 new microsatellite loci. Analysis of the segregation of 12 of these loci and of two enzymatic loci shows that most microsatellite loci are transmitted in a Mendelian way, but some loci have significant segregation distortions. Moreover, seven linkage groups, of which four contain at least two markers, were identified in Ostrea edulis. The genetic variability of three populations selected for one or two generations for resistance to Bonamia ostreae was analysed with the aid of 5 microsatellite loci. In spite of the absence of genealogical data, we have shown that these selected populations were descended from a very low number of founding genitors (from 3 to 15 depending on the population) and for two populations, we were able to reconstruct the genealogy and the relationships between the individuals were identified. These selected populations have, in addition to a very low genetic variability, real and at times high levels of consanguinity. These results have a significant implication for the continuation of the selection programme (consanguinity management, augmentation of genetic variability by introducing wild genitors). The geographical structuring of the genetic variability of natural populations of Ostrea edulis has been analysed with the aid of 5 microsatellite loci on a sampling covering almost the entire distribution area of the species (from Norway to the Adriatic Sea). The results are consistent with those published in the literature and using enzymatic markers. The populations show a low level of differentiation that could correspond to a model of isolation by distance. The Atlantic populations, which have a reduced polymorphism, could be descended from post-glacial recolonisation from Mediterranean populations that had survived the glaciations of the Quaternary Period. The current distribution of flat oyster populations is surely also subject to anthropogenic activities. Finally, the genetic bases of the heterozygosis-growth correlation were studied in a natural population with the aid of enzymatic and microsatellite markers. Although leads favouring the direct contribution of enzymatic loci have been found, biases in the sampling design make it impossible to come to a formal conclusion. However, this study has made it possible to show that the capture of individuals over a short period (around ten days) leads to a sampling of a population descended from a very low number of founding genitors, in contradiction with the generally accepted idea that marine bivalve populations are large panmictic populations with significant, efficient numbers. These results confirm in a natural population the observations of a significant reduction of efficient sizes in hatchery populations. Testing Interpretation to Influence Snorkeler Behavior in the Mombasa Marine Park and Reserve (Kenya) Auteur(s) : D. Den Haring, Sander Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : A major goal of natural resource managers is to foster and maximize environmentally responsible behavior among resource users. Interpretation is the process of conveying a message to someone to (a) enhance the awareness and appreciation that the person has with their surroundings, and to (b) encourage pro-environmental actions. It is one management tool that can be used to influence the actions or inactions of recreational visitors. Effective interpretation prompts the target audience to take action and provides opportunities for the audience to take action. An understanding of behavior and behavior change guides interpretive efforts so that they are effective in influencing behavior. This paper investigates the application of behavioral principles to test the most effective interpretive messages in influencing snorkeler behavior in Mombasa Marine Park. Key messages were incorporated into a training workshop for all the snorkel boat operators and associated crew enabling them to deliver an interpretation program to their clientele. Results indicate that the introduced interpretation program successfully influenced the behavior of snorkeling clients (i.e. led to more pro-environmental snorkel behavior), and increased visitor satisfaction (largely due to the transfer of information through the guide). Rapport sur l'exercice de la pêche dans la zone côtière de la France Auteur(s) : Bolopion, Jacques Forest, Andre Sourd, Louis-julien Bolopion, Jacques Forest, Andre Sourd, Louis-julien Résumé : The maritime fisheries and mariculture guidance law passed in 1997 specifies that with the perspective of renegotiation of the common fisheries policy in 2002, a report on the special conditions of inshore fisheries be drawn up by the Government. To do so, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries entrusted this task to three experts, who are the authors of this report. In accordance with their remit, the situation of fisheries in territorial waters and estuaries of metropolitan France and the four DOM overseas departments ( counties) was examined, in the framework of meetings with professional fishermen, administrations, elected officials and scientific organisations. The first part situates fishing activities in coastal areas within the overall context of French fisheries. The second part provides a detailed report for each seafront (Channel, Atlantic, Mediterranean, West Indies, French Guyana and Reunion Island) on the regulatory framework, fleets, stocks, uses of resources and vulnerable areas of interest for fisheries. The report then analyses the competition within fisheries and with other activities (recreational fishing, extraction of aggregates, tourism, etc.). After these observations, the authors make ten proposals to improve the conditions under which coastal or inshore fisheries are practiced.
Campagnes 2011 Auteur(s) : Bertrand, Jacques Dromer, Clement Reynal, Lionel Résumé : Spiny lobsters are an important component of the coastal fisheries around the Martinique island. This study aimed to assess the contamination by kepone of the two main species Panulirus argus and P. guttatus in the main fishery area laying along the eastern coast of Martinique. The objectives of the study were to describe the distribution of the spiny lobster contamination in the area, to explore possible relationships with some biological parameters such as individual size, sex and colour of tegument, as well as characterize difference of kepone concentration between the muscle and soft flesh of the head, in view of helping the definition of further fishery management measures. The analyses were done from chemical analyses of 125 samples of spiny lobsters gathered from 2008 to 2010 all around the island, and from a specific set of 200 new observations from a specific survey carried out in 2011 in the study area.
For both species, the results show a diffusion of the contamination all over the coral shoals, close to contaminated catchment basins, with a strong decrease just outside these areas. For the Caribbean spiny lobster, a strong relationship between kepone concentration and individual size was identified, and less for the Spotted spiny lobster. For the two species, the concentration of kepone found in soft flesh of the head was more than twice as in the muscle. Finally, the difference of contamination between the two species appeared strongly linked with their biology. The Recopesca Project : a new example of participative approach to collect fisheries and in situ environmental data Auteur(s) : Leblond, Emilie Lazure, Pascal Laurans, Martial Rioual, Celine Woerther, Patrice Quemener, Loic Berthou, Patrick Éditeur(s) : Mercator Ocean Résumé : Face to the lack of data to assess precisely the spatial distribution of catches and fishing effort and for the environmental characterization of the fishing area, Ifremer has been implemented since 2005 a new project, Recopesca. It consists in fitting out a sample of voluntary fishing vessels with sensors recording data on fishing effort (and at mid-terms catches) and physical parameters such as temperature or salinity. Recopesca aims at setting up a network of sensors, for scientific purposes, to collect data and improve resources assessment and diagnostics on fisheries, and environmental data required for ecosystem-based management initiatives. The challenge was to develop sensors with no trouble for the fishermen, tough enough to be fixed up on fishing gears, self powered and autonomous. Insofar as the sample of targeted vessels intends to be representative of all the metiers and fleets, the sensors are modular and scalable to collect new data. Different sensors have been implemented: (i) a temperature-salinity sensor, able to record physical parameters, depth and duration of immersion, for passive and active gears, and (ii) a specific sensor to record number or length of passive gears. A GPS monitors the position of the vessels and the temperature or salinity profiles and series. Each sensor is equipped with a radio device transferring the data to a receiver on-board, called “concentrator” that sends the data to Ifremer central databases by GPRS. An anti-rolling weigh-scale has been developed and is currently on test to record catches per species and fishing operation. The presentation will show the first data and results of this participative approach. Apport d'un programme de génétique à une filière de production aquacole : l'exemple de l'ostréiculture Auteur(s) : Lapegue, Sylvie Bedier, Edouard Goyard, Emmanuel Degremont, Lionel Baud, Jean-pierre Gerard, Andre Goulletquer, Philippe Boudry, Pierre Éditeur(s) : Styli 2003. Trente ans de crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Nouméa - Koné, 2-6 juin 2003. 2004. Gorarant C, Harache Y, Herbland A, Mugnier C. Ed. Ifremer, Actes de Colloque, n°38, pp.113-120 Résumé : Two oyster species are currently present along the French coasts : the indigenous European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis), and the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas), that has been introduced from Japan since the beginning of the 70ies. The flat oyster successively suffered from two protozoan diseases during the 60ies and its production decreased from 20 000 tons/year by that time to 1 500 tons/year nowadays. Consequently, the oyster production is principally (99%) based upon the Pacific oyster species with approximately 150 000 tons/year among which 90% are grown from the natural spat. However, the hatchery production of this species is developing and was estimated to 400 to 800 millions spat in 2002. Moreover, strengthened relationships between IFREMER and the 5 commercial hatcheries, that all joined the SYSAAF (Union of the French poultry, shellfish and fish farming selectors), allow to plan for new genetic breeding programs. At the end of the 80ies, IFREMER initiated a genetic breeding program for the resistance of the European flat oyster to the bonamiosis, and obtained strains more tolerant to this disease. After two generations of massal selection, molecular markers had identified a reduced genetic basis in this program. It was then reoriented to an intra-familial selection. However, we were confronted to a zootechnic problem to manage such a scheme and we compromised by an intra-cohorts of families selection scheme managed using molecular markers. The program has now reached the transfer level with experimentation at a professional scale. Concerning the Pacific cupped oyster, and in parallel with the obtaining and the study of polyploids, performance of different Asian cupped oyster strains were compared to the one introduced in France thirty years ago and currently suffering from summer mortalities. The local strain exhibited better performance, certainly based upon a good local adaptation. In other respects, although early growth is a relevant criteria for selection for growth to commercial stage, it is not to be privileged in the context of an oyster producing region with a limited food availability. Contrary, the spat summer mortality became a priority for numerous teams (genetic, physiology, pathology, ecology,...) joined in the MOREST program. The first results showed important survival differences between fullsib and halsib families. They indicate a genetic determinism to this character "survival" and promote for its selection. The article presents the differences in perception between the tourists and residents regarding the protection of the marine and coastal environment. It is based on the results of studies conducted across Martinique in 2010, in the framework of the evaluation of the economic and social value of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, and at the level of the rural community of le Prêcheur in 2011, in the context of the implementation of the regional marine reserve. It highlights the elements that compose the disparities of perception and wishes with respect to coastal areas management measures. It shows, however, that the creation of a marine protected area in the commune of le Prêcheur has the unanimous support of all. Combining the Biocean database for deep-sea benthic data with the online Ocean Biogeographic Information System Auteur(s) : Fabri, Marie-claire Galeron, Joelle Larour, Michel Maudire, Gilbert Éditeur(s) : Inter-Research Résumé : The Biocean database was designed to collate the extremely large volume of data collected from different deep-sea ecosystem studies conducted by Ifremer's department of 'Environnement Profond' (Deep-Sea Environment). This database comes in a 6-application package: 2 of them are used on research vessels to collect operational data, whereas the others are used to link with a core database back on land. The latter are used to: (1) manage taxonomic nomenclature, (2) monitor the identification of faunal collections, (3) fill in chemical analyses results or measurement data files and (4) add or extract data from the database. Biocean was designed to facilitate ecosystem studies in the deep sea. It represents an important new resource for deep-sea ecologists and will have wide applications in biogeography and biodiversity studies at Ifremer, but also for the international community, as faunal data are linked to the Census of Marine Life information system OBIS (Ocean Biogeographic Information System). Biogeographical analyses of Biocean data recovered through the OBIS portal evidence an evolution in the deep-sea sampling strategies more focused in limited areas and is intended to reveal ecosystems functioning. Fish aggregating devices (FADs): good or bad fishing tools? A question of scale and knowledge FOREWORD: Tahiti International Conference "Tuna Fisheries and FADs", November 2011 Auteur(s) : Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : It is estimated that fish aggregating devices (FADs) are now used for over 40% of world tropical tuna catches, making this technique a major phenomenon for high seas fisheries worldwide, and one that has experienced great expansion over the past three decades. The question of whether the FAD is a good or a bad tool for the exploitation of marine resources depends on many parameters. To respond to this question, it is necessary to distinguish different scales of exploitation (artisanal vs. industrial) and various types of FADs (anchored vs. drifting), but it is also very important to gather more data and conduct further research on this topic to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon and of its impacts. As such, twelve years after the first international conference devoted to FADs, which was held in Martinique (French West Indies), a new multi-scalar global assessment of FAD fisheries development and a review of the progress of research in this field was deemed vital. The latest international conference, "Tuna Fisheries and Fish Aggregating Devices", was held in Tahiti in November 2011, and it was an event that welcomed nearly 150 conference attendees from 40 different countries, three ocean regions, and the Mediterranean. This is an analysis of the relevant literature gathered by the author in the bibliographic database FADBASE. Then, the major issues already addressed by the scientific community are set out, and gaps and research priorities are highlighted for anchored and drifting FADs management. Campagne de prospection de poissons démersaux profonds réalisée autour de La Réunion en 2011 Auteur(s) : Fleury, Pierre-gildas Evano, Hugues Le Ru, Loic Résumé : Since 2000, the exploitation of the deep demersal fish (200-700 m) with the use of electric winches has been increasing in Reunion island ; and this has needed a new appraisal of yields (CPUE) and individual fish sizes, as indicators of the state of the fish stocks. A first survey has been carried out at the first half of 2011, in order to set up the comparison with a previous survey in 2000 on the West coast of Reunion island. Drops of yields and sizes could be pointed out, attesting the overexploitation of the commercial species (Fleury et al 2011). This present report displays the results of a second campaign, carried out in the second half of 2011 all around the island. 32 fishing trips have been conducted which have permitted 251 fishing operations. The overexploitation (i.e. decreasing of yields and fish sizes) has been confirmed in the West of the island, and in a lower stage in the North. Yields are better in the East and the South. As much as in the first survey, the small non commercial sharks (Squalus megalops) could be countered for half of the catches. At the same time, 2 hook sizes have been tested and the small hooks have displayed a better efficiency in number of catches but not in global weight. Various types of bait have been tested and meat of small local pelagic fish (Selar crumenophtalmus and Decapterus macarellus) have appeared to be the most efficient. This report provides helpful indicators for the management of fish stocks which have been poorly surveyed and poorly regulated till now. The creation of regional marine reserve of Prêcheur will lead to the implementation of fisheries management measures within the perimeter of the reserve. From a short-term perspective, fishers will see limitations of their fishing practices. But, from a longer-term perspective, they should gain substantial benefits from these restrictions; the increase of biomass due to the “reserve effect” should lead to increased volumes of catches in fishing areas. It should also lead to an enhancement of traditional practices such as line fishing, jig or “piscine” fishing, which have been abandoned for several years in spite of their lesser impact on marine ecosystems. Marine turtle interaction with purse-seine fishery in the Atlantic and Indian oceans: Lessons for management Auteur(s) : Bourjea, Jerome Clermont, Sandra Delgado, Alicia Murua, Hilario Ruiz, Jon Ciccione, Stephane Chavance, Pierre Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Sci Ltd Résumé : Bycatch of endangered marine turtles is a growing issue for the management of all fisheries, including the oceanic purse-seine fishery. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal variation in bycatch rates of these species in the entire European purse-seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The study was based on data collected through observer programs from 1995 to 2011. During that period, a total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on Drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (DFADs) and 9 398 on free swimming schools, representing a global coverage of 10.3% and 5.1% of the total fishing activity in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, respectively. Moreover, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were carried out on DFADs to check turtle entanglement in the net covering DFADs. We found that the purse-seine fishery has a very low impact on marine turtles. We estimated that the annual number of individuals incidentally captured was 218 (SD = 150) and 250 (SD = 157) in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, respectively, with more than 75% being released alive. The present study also investigated the impact of DFADs; which is considered a key conservation issue for this fishery. Drifting objects may play a key role in aggregating juveniles of marine turtles, implying the need for improving their construction to avoid entanglement (e.g. avoiding nets in the structure); however, based on our study it is not the main source of incidental captures of marine turtles in this fishery. Marine resources of the economic zone of New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Auzende, Jean-marie Grandperrin, René Bouniot, Emmanuel Henin, Christian Lafoy, Yves De Forges, Bertrand Van De Beuque, Sabrina Virly, Sabrina Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The ZoNeCo programme, devoted to the evaluation of living and non-living marine resources within the Economic Zone of New Caledonia, illustrates clearly the Marine Benthic Habitats concept. It exhibits the study of the physical environment and disciplines such as geology and physical oceanography. The results acquired in these fields are used as bases to study the presence and the distribution of living species within a given habitat. The knowledge of all the parameters relative to each discipline is a useful guide for the evaluation and the sustainable management of living and nonliving resources.
