Résumé : Many theoretical studies since after the war have been devoted to the biological and economic aspects of exploiting halieutic resources. They often lead to, indeed focus directly on, the interest of limiting the fishing effort. In the simplest case, the one in which production automatically finds an outlet, the idea of limiting the fishing effort comes from an argument that can be presented schematically in three points: a) halieutic resources and their renewal are limited; b) an increase in overall fishing effort cannot therefore be done while maintaining the same level of catches per unit of effort; the latter inevitably decrease. Additionally, beyond a certain level of fishing intensity, a supplementary increase of the overall fishing effort brings about a decrease in overall catches. c) without limitations, any expectation of profits from exploiting the resources elicits an increase of effort (increase in the number of ships or their fishing power); the latter leads to a decrease in catches per unit of effort, which makes it impossible to obtain the anticipated individual profits. The fishing effort will eventually have a tendency to grow up to the time when average net profits per boat and of the fleet become zero. This tendency is in part masked by technological improvements that make it possible, for the same level of overall effort, to increase production per ship; the decrease in number of ships is a corollary to that. For some species, a pronounced rise in the landing price can compensate for the drop in intake. Producers can benefit from that, not consumers. The conclusion to which the theoretical analyses lead is that there is, in the absence of limitations on fishing efforts, a squandering of not only natural resources, but also of human and material means...
(OCR non controlé) De nombreuses études théoriques ont été consacrées depuis l'après-guerre aux aspects biologiques et économiques de l'exploitation des ressources halieutiques. Elles débouchent souvent, voire portent directement, sur l'intérêt d'une limitation de l'effort de pêche. Dans le cas le plus simple, celui où la production trouve automatiquement un débouché, l'idée d'une limitation de l'effort de pêche découle d'un raisonnement que l'on peut présenter, de manière schématique, en trois points : a) les ressources halieutiques et leur renouvellement sont limités ; b) un accroissement de l'effort total de pêche ne peut donc s'effectuer tout en maintenant un même niveau de captures par unités d'effort ; celles-ci diminuent nécessairement. De plus, audelà d'un certain niveau d'intensité de pêche, une augmentation supplémentaire de l'effort total de pêche entraîne une diminution des captures totales c) en l'absence de limitation, toute anticipation de bénéfices tirés de l'exploitation des ressources suscite un accroissement de l'effort (accroissement du nombre de navires ou de leur puissance de pêche) ; celui-ci entraîne une diminution des captures par unité d'effort qui ne permet pas d'obtenir les bénéfices individuels escomptés. L'effort de pêche aura finalement tendance à se développer jusqu'au moment où les bénéfices moyens nets par bateau et de la flottille deviennent nuls. Cette tendance est en partie masquée par les améliorations technologiques qui permettent, pour un mème niveau d'effort total, d'accroître la production par navire ; la diminution du nombre de navire en est un corollaire. Pour certaines espèces, une hausse prononcée du prix au débarquement permet de compenser la baisse des apports. Les producteurs peuvent en bénéficier, non les consommateurs. La conclusion à laquelle les analyses théoriques aboutissent est qu'il existe, en l'absence de limitation de l'effort de pêche, un gaspillage non seulement des ressources naturelles, mais aussi des moyens humains et matériels...

Résumé : Considerable interest is presently being shown in research, design and practical application of composite materials within Fincantieri Merchant Shipbuilding Division. This paper is intended to discuss the state-of-the-art and the innovations in hull, outfitting and accommodation applications, where traditional steel or light alloy can be successfully replaced by composites. The impact on design and production is outlined, with an overview of the economic effects of these materials on technology, production and safety requirements, which remain an open subject for the future possible developments.
Un intérêt considérable est porté à l'heure actuelle à la recherche, la conception et l'application pratique des matériaux composites dans la Division Merchant Shipbuilding de Fincantien. Résumé : A method to estimate mass and heat transports across hydrographic sections using hydrography together with altimetry data in a geostrophic box inverse model is presented. Absolute surface velocities computed from AVISO altimetry products made up of a combination of sea surface height measurements and geoid estimate are first compared to Ship Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (S-ADCP) measurements of the Ovide project along hydrographic sections repeated every 2 years in summer from Portugal to Greenland. The rms difference between S-ADCP and altimetry velocities averaged on distances of about a hundred km accounts to 3.3 cm s−1. Considering that the uncertainty of S-ADCP velocities is found at 1.5 cm s−1, altimetry errors are estimated at 3 cm s−1. Transports across Ovide sections previously obtained using S-ADCP data to constrain the geostrophic inverse box model are used as reference. The new method is found useful to estimate absolute transports across the sections, as well as part of their variability. Despite associated uncertainties about 50% larger than when S-ADCP is used, our results for the North Atlantic Current and heat transports, with uncertainties of 10 to 15%, reproduce the variability already observed. The largest uncertainties are found in the estimates of the East Greenland Irminger Current (EGIC) transport (30%), induced by larger uncertainties associated with altimetry data at the western boundary.

Résumé : In November and December 1959, one of us was assigned by the Credit and Technical Assistance Society (SATEC) to do a study on shrimp fishing on the Guiana Shield as practised by American trawlers (Figure 1). This study had both technological and biological goals. It was first necessary to describe the fishing boats and the methods used by American shrimp boats to fish in the Guianas. Each step of processing and packaging of the shrimp was monitored on board as well as on land, from catch up to storage under refrigerated conditions until commercialisation. It was then necessary to evaluate the relative proportions of shrimp and fish in the catches in order to establish the factors governing productivity of the operations. This was done with a view for establishing a fleet of fishing boats in French Guyana wishing to exploit as much of the catches as possible. American trawlers discard all fish and shellfish that are not marketable by American standards. The flat trawls used by ships based in Georgetown (British Guyana) or in Paramaribo (Surinam) are not designed for catching fish; but during the expedition off the shore of Surinam, we observed that a good part of catches was made up of various marketable species, including flatfishes, many goatfishes, pompano fishes, rockfishes, etc. It was thus important to weigh, insofar as possible, species that were discarded. ... En novembre et décembre 1959, l'un de nous était chargé par la Société d'assistance technique et de crédit (SATEC) d'une étude de la pêche à la crevette telle que la pratiquent les chalutiers américains (fig. 1 ) sur le plateau continental des Guyanes. Cette étude avait deux buts, technologique et biologique. Il fallait tout d'abord décrire les engins et les méthodes utilisés par les crevettiers américains pour exploiter les fonds guyanais et suivre pas à pas le travail de transformation et de conditionnement des crustacés, à bord comme à terre, de la capture jusqu'au stockage sous froid avant la commercialisation. Il était nécessaire ensuite d'évaluer les proportions relatives des crevettes et des poissons dans les apports, ceci pour établir les facteurs de rentabilité des opérations dans le cas de la mise en place, en Guyane française, d'armements métropolitains soucieux d'utiliser la presque totalité des captures. Les chalutiers américains rejettent en effet à la mer tout ce qui n'est pas crustacé commercialisable selon les normes observées aux Etats-Unis. Certes les chaluts plats utilisés par les navires basés à Georgetown (Guyane britannique) ou à Paramaribo (Surinam) ne sont pas des engins destinés à la capture des poissons mais, au cours de la marée effectuée au large du Surinam sur l'un des bateaux sus-cités, nous avons constaté qu'une bonne partie des captures était constituée d'espèces parfaitement commercialisables, poissons plats divers, Mullidés relativement nombreux, Carangidés, Scorpénidés, etc. Il était donc important de peser, dans la mesure du possible, ce qui était rejeté à la mer. Le marché des Antilles françaises, loin d'être saturé, pouvait être ravitaillé si les moyens de transport étaient organisés et si une infrastructure « froid » suffisante était créée. Il était peut-être possible, de plus, d'envisager la création d'une conserverie utilisant les têtes de crevettes habituellement éliminées (plus de 13 % du poids total des captures), les Scorpénidés et autres espèces ichthyologiques moins appréciées de la clientèle Antillaise, et les crustacés d'intérêt secondaire pour le marché américain : Portunidés (« cyriques »), Calappidés, crevettes de petites tailles, scyllares..., pour la confection de bisques, de soupes ou de concentrés; il suffisait pour cela d'équiper les chalutiers de cuiseurs, de broyeurs et de dessiccateurs. Les résultats obtenus ont été formulés et présentés à la SATEC sous forme d'une note ronéotypée en plusieurs cahiers dont la diffusion a été relativement restreinte. Nous reprenons ici ce travail en le développant grâce à l'exploitation des carnets de note de la mission comme de l'abondante bibliographie afférente. Les auteurs américains ont en effet beaucoup publié au sujet de la biologie des différentes espèces de Penéidés exploitées, de la technologie de la pêche comme à propos de la technologie des transformations culinaires subies par les crustacés. Les statistiques les plus récentes (LYLES, 1966) montrent que les apports pour l'année 1964 (la dernière année pour laquelle nous ayons des informations complètes) furent de 96 157 tonnes environ valant quelque 70 400 000 dollars; 99 % de cette production furent capturés au chalut de fond tandis que le reste l'était au chalut à perche, aux nasses, à l'épervier ou avec d'autres engins de type artisanal. La demande en « shrimps » outre-Atlantique est loin d'être saturée et les armements américains déplacent progressivement leurs unités vers les rares points du continent américain dont le plateau continental n'a point été, jusqu'à maintenant, exploité. Les capitaux investis dans la pêèhe proprement dite, les installations à terre et les moyens de distribution sont largement supérieurs à ceux qui ont été investis à propos de la pêche au thon et l'industrie crevettière américaine fait vivre une grande partie de la population de pêcheurs des états du sud des Etats-Unis. Le travail que nous présentons ici n'a aucun 2 prétention quant à l'établissement d'une liste faunistique du plateau guyanais pas plus qu'à une étude des fonds et la détermination précise des crevettes capturées n'a pas été tentée; le lecteur devra consulter à ce sujet les travaux de Voss (1955), DURAND (1959), HOLTHUIS (1959), BULLIS et THOMPSON (1959), HIGMAN (1959)... Nous espérons cependant que les documents que nous fournissons ici seront utiles aux professionnels soucieux de se documenter sur des techniques inutilisées encore en France, comme aux fabricants de filets qui fourniront les engins réclamés par les futurs exploitants du plateau guyanais, et peut-être par ceux de Madagascar. Résumé : Salinity measurements from 119 surface drifters in 2007-12 were assessed; 80% [Surface Velocity Program with a barometer with a salinity sensor (SVP-BS)] and 75% [SVP with salinity (SVP-S)] of the salinity data were found to be usable, after editing out some spikes. Sudden salinity jumps are found in drifter salinity records that are not always associated with temperature jumps, in particular in the wet tropics. A method is proposed to decide whether and how to correct those jumps, and the uncertainty in the correction applied. Northeast of South America, in a region influenced by the Amazon plume and fresh coastal water, drifter salinity is very variable, but a comparison with data from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity satellite suggests that this variability is usually reasonable. The drifter salinity accuracy is then explored based on comparisons with data from Argo floats and from thermosalinographs (TSGs) of ships of opportunity. SVP-S/SVP-BS drifter records do not usually present significant biases within the first 6 months, but afterward biases sometimes need to be corrected (altogether, 16% of the SVP-BS records). Biases start earlier after 3 months for drifters not protected by antifouling paint. For the few drifters for which large corrections were applied to portions of the record, the accuracy cannot be proven to be better than 0.1 psu, and it cannot be proven to be better than 0.5 psu for data in the largest variability area off northeast South America. Elsewhere, after excluding portions of the records with suspicious salinity jumps or when large corrections were applied, the comparisons rule out average biases in individual drifter salinity record larger than 0.02 psu (midlatitudes) and 0.05 psu (tropics).

Résumé : The Lagrangian Transport Experiment (LATEX) was developed to study the influence of coupled physical and biogeochemical dynamics at the meso- and submesoscales on the transfers of matter and heat between the coastal zone and the open ocean. One of the goals of the Latex10 field experiment, conducted during September 2010 in the Gulf of Lion (northwest Mediterranean), was to mark a dynamical mesoscale feature by releasing a passive tracer [sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)] together with an array of Lagrangian buoys. The goal was to release the tracer in an initial patch as homogeneous as possible in the horizontal, and to study its turbulent mixing and dispersion while minimizing the contribution due to advection. For that, it was necessary to continuously adjust the vessel route in order to remain as closely as possible in the Lagrangian reference frame moving with the investigated mesoscale structure. To accomplish this task, a methodology and software were developed, which are presented here. The software is equipped with a series of graphical and user-friendly accessories and the entire package for MATLAB can be freely downloaded ().
