Reconstructing individual food and growth histories from biogenic carbonates Auteur(s) : Pecquerie, Laure Fablet, Ronan De Pontual, Helene Bonhommeau, Sylvain Alunno-bruscia, Marianne Petitgas, Pierre Kooijman, Sebastiaan A. L. M. Éditeur(s) : Inter-research Résumé : Environmental conditions experienced by aquatic organisms are archived in biogenic carbonates such as fish otoliths, bivalve shells and coral skeletons. These calcified structures present an accretionary growth and variations in optical properties - color or opacity - that are used to reconstruct time. Full and reliable exploitation of the information extracted from these structures is, however, often limited as the metabolic processes that control their growth and their optical properties are poorly understood. Here, we propose a new modeling framework that couples both the growth of a biogenic carbonate and its optical properties with the metabolism of the organism. The model relies on well-tested properties of Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory. It is applied to otoliths of the Bay of Biscay anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) for which a DEB model has been previously developed. The model reproduces well-known otolith patterns and thus provides us with mechanisms for the metabolic control of otolith size and opacity at the scale of an individual lifespan. Two original contributions using this framework are demonstrated. First, the model can be used to reconstruct the temporal variations in the food assimilated by an individual fish. Reconstructing food conditions of past and present aquatic species in their natural environment is key ecological information to better understand population dynamics. Second, we show that non-seasonal checks can be discriminated from seasonal checks, which is a well-recognized problem when interpreting fish otoliths. We discuss further developments of the model and the experimental settings required to test this new promising framework. Contribution et Dépendance des flottilles de pêche aux espèces commerciales majeures du Golfe de Gascogne Auteur(s) : Daures, Fabienne Planchot, Marie Demaneche, Sebastien Van Isenghem, Sylvie Berthou, Patrick Leblond, Emilie Jezequel, Michele Résumé : In order to provide economic indicators for fisheries, analysis of contribution and economic dependencies of the Bay of Biscay fishing fleets to major commercial species catching in the ICES VIII area is conducted. 9 species are considered (regarding the importance of their landings in this area): Sole, Norway Lobster, Sea bass, Hake, Anglerfish, Anchovy, Sardine, Cuttlefish and Monkfish. The landings data are provided by the Harmonie database of the Fisheries Information System of Ifremer and the analysis per specie is done for the 2005 year on one side and over the period 2000-2005 on the other side. A stock slip is built for each species and presents :
- Key figures on landings in the Bay of Biscay (total landings, average price, number of vessels concerned and share in the national landings)
- Assessment of the concentration of landings
- Assessment of the fleets' contribution to these total landings
- Assessment of the fleets' economic dependence to the species based on the income share depending on this species.
Analyzing the market position of fish species subject to the impact of long-term changes: a case study of French fisheries in the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Le Floc' H, P Poulard, Jean-charles Thebaud, Olivier Blanchard, Fabian Bihel, J Steinmetz, Fabien Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Market position and its evolution were analysed in nine key fish and cephalopod species subject to long-term changes, using the Bay of Biscay fisheries as a case study. Although such long term changes have already been documented, and in some cases shown to be related to the impacts of fishing, changes in the physical environment, or both, relatively little work has been devoted to their potential consequences in economic terms. The nature and extent of these consequences was determined in the present study by looking at the composition of the affected fish production, and the status of different fish products on the markets. We propose a methodology to characterize market position for this set of nine species. The selected species represent a significant part of the gross turnover of French fishing fleets operating in the bay. These species were characterized in terms of their potential sensitivity to fishing and changes in environmental conditions due to global warming. We separated species potentially positively (Engraulis encrasicolus and Lophius budegassa) and negatively affected (Pollachius pollachius and Lophius piscatorius) by warming. Evolution of the value of production of the nine species was then depicted using analysis of macro-economic index (production and potential consumption) and price indices. This revealed the relatively high sensitivity of domestic production to the market crisis that occurred in France in the early 1990s, compared to imported and exported products. The relative position of individual species, with respect to the market and its evolution between 1990 and 2005, was analyzed by multi-factorial analysis. Results derived from the analysis clearly distinguish two groups of species, the first characterized by higher prices (monkfish, Nephrops, sole, seabass) and the second by larger volumes available on the French market (pollack, hake, anchovy, sardine, cuttlefish). We conclude that a major part (69 to 87%) of the gross turnover associated with catches of these fish species in the Bay of Biscay remains potentially unaffected by long-term changes related to climate. Combining sensitivity and uncertainty analysis to evaluate the impact of management measures with ISIS-Fish: marine protected areas for the Bay of Biscay anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) fishery Auteur(s) : Lehuta, Sigrid Mahevas, Stephanie Petitgas, Pierre Pelletier, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Oxford Univ Press Résumé : Spatio-seasonal explicit simulation models can predict the impact of spatial management measures on marine fish populations and fishing activities. As fisheries are complex systems, fisheries simulation models are often complex, with many uncertain parameters. Here, the methodology is provided to deliver fishery diagnostics within an uncertainty context using a complex simulation tool. A sensitivity analysis of the model is performed on model outputs using partial least-squares to identify the most sensitive parameters. The impact of several management measures is then simulated using a statistical simulation design taking into account the uncertainty of the selected sensitive parameters. This approach was applied to the Bay of Biscay anchovy stock using the ISIS-Fish (Integration of Spatial Information for Simulation of Fisheries) model to assess the impact of imposing marine protected areas (MPAs) conditionally on parameter uncertainty. The diagnostic appeared to be highly sensitive to the mortality of larvae and juveniles, growth, and reproduction. The uncertainty of the values of these parameters did not permit any of the simulated MPA designs to be proposed. However, according to anchovy catch and biomass, the simulations allowed the low impact of closure duration to be shown and underscored the utility of protecting such key processes as spawning. Their populations are, however, characterized by large biomass fluctuations strongly affecting fisheries. The fishing gears and methods used to capture small pelagics have evolved to exploit the highly developed shoaling behavior of these species. Hence, faced to modern fishing this gregarious behavior becomes a disadvantage for fish. Fish behavior may be affected by environmental conditions and by fishing, at the same time that behavior impacts fishing. In this study, we seek to characterize the aggregative systems of small pelagic fishes inhabiting the Bay of Biscay by analyzing "acoustic images", defined as the group of echoes (planktonic layers, shoals, isolated targets) detected on a transect section of a given length. We analyzed the species composition, the spatial distribution and the evolution over time of acoustic images. We also studied the hydrological conditions of the bay, as well as the small pelagics French fishery in order to look for correlations between hydrology, commercial catch and fish aggregation patterns observed by acoustics. We observed the same species or group of species forming different types of aggregation according to habitat. Conversely, the same type of aggregation, associated with a particular habitat, can be produced by different species. The most notorious change observed during the studied period relates to small clupeoids aggregations in the vicinity of the Gironde estuary, whose structure evolved toward a greater fragmentation of shoals (a large number of small size detections) since 2000. Concerning commercial catches, pelagic trawlers fishing in pairs mainly seek for anchovy in the coastal areas, single pelagic trawlers capture mackerel and horse mackerel in deeper waters while purse seiners target mostly sardine near their fishing ports. Because of the coarse spatial resolution of commercial fishing data and the effect of the application of an international fisheries agreement limiting the fishing activity of French pelagic trawlers during spring, only small correlations between captures and types of aggregation were observed. Quels descripteurs ? ; Management impact on the pelagic fishery of the bay of Biscay : What is certain ? How to describe ? Auteur(s) : Lehuta, Sigrid Éditeur(s) : Agrocampus-ouest Résumé : Quantitative evaluations of management measure impact on resource and fleet viability are required to provide diagnostics and feed decision process. Fisheries are complex systems where numerous dynamics interact at various spatial and temporal scales. This complexity and the difficulty to observe marine systems are responsible for the high uncertainty surrounding fishery functioning that makes it hard to identify adequate management measures. The increasing consideration of uncertainties in diagnostics argues in favor of robust management measures rather than optimal management measures. Identifying robust management measures requires the development of models that account for complexity and uncertainty in the description and prediction of management impact as well as the identification of synthetic descriptors (indicators) of the state and dynamic of the system. The aim of this work is to propose generic methodologies for developing such tools. The methodological developments are applied to the pelagic fishery of the bay of Biscay. This fishery mainly focused on anchovy and was highly impacted by fishing ban on this species since 2005. Causes for anchovy drop in biomass either environmental or due to fishing are poorly understood, making management decision much harder in a critical environmental and economic context. The adequacy of traditional management using TAC is questioned and additional spatial management measures are proposed.
