Jonkonnu is an Afro-Bahamian carnival-like festival held every Boxing Day, New Year's Day and summer time. Groups dance down streets and dress in paper-fringed costumes. The musicians often use traditional instruments such as goat skin drums and cowbells.

Résumé : Marinette Bois Sèch, a loas or god of Haitian voodoo, is dangerous, violent, and unpredictable. Her ceremonies, known as Bizango, take place are around a bonfire into which are thrown salt and gasoline. She has the authority over all werewolves. She is often depicted with her hands crooked. She has a scratchy voice. Offerings to her, a black hen or goat sacrificed alive and on fire, reflect her cruelty. During Bizango's late night ceremomy, Marinette Bois Sèch walks barefoot over fire. She is the wife of Ti Jean Dantor, cousin of Erzulie Dantor.

Résumé : Les systèmes d'élevage des petits ruminants au pâturage sont les plus répandus en zone tropicale humide mais l'exposition aux strongles gastro-intestinaux entraîne des pertes importantes de production. L'objectif de ce travail est d'évaluer un système de gestion mixte du pâturage associant diverses espèces animales permettant à priori d'accroître les performances via la réduction du parasitisme et!ou une meilleure alimentation. L'étude de la littérature a conduit à une méta-analyse confirmant de meilleures performances individuelles ou à l'hectare pour les ovins en mixte. Préalablement un dispositif visant à vérifier la non-transmission des larves d'Haemonchus contortus des caprinsaux génisses Créoles a été validé. Un second dispositif avec des chevrettes conduites en mixte, infestées ou pas par Haemonchus comortus (Ml et MnI) ont été comparées à des chevrettes contrôles infestées ou non (CI et CnI). Ce dispositif a été conduit pendant 2 ans avec des mesures du couvert pâturé, des mesures individuelles des quantités ingérées, de la digestibilité, du parasitisme et de la croissance. De plus fortes croissances ont étéobservées en pâturage mixte que les chevrettes soient infestées ou pas (43.25 et 31.68 glj pour MDI et MI vs. 32.44 et 17.91 glj) avec une moindre biomasse. Les mesures d'ingestion et d'ingéré digéré ont été corrélées aux croissances des chevrettes contrairement aux variables parasitaires et met en évidence le rôle de l'alimentation et de la résilience dans le bénéfice du pâturage mixte. Une autre gestion intégrée du pâturage a été étudiée basée sur l'utilisation du vermicompost et s' ant sur les mêmes leviers d'action: l'alimentation et le itisme
Systems of small ruminant grazing are most prevalent in the humid tropics but this environment exposes animals to gastro-intestinal with production losses. The objective ofthis thesis is to evaluate a system ofmixed management ofthe pasture combining various animal species, which allows a priori to increase animal performance by reducing the parasitism and/or better nutrition. The study of literature bas led to a meta-analysis confirming the better individual performances or calculated per ha for sheep reared mixed. The first experiment validated the non-transmission of Iarvae ofHaemonchus contortus from goats to heifers. In a second experiment, goats mixed with heifers, infested or not with Haemonchus contortus (Ml vs MnI) were compared with controls goats, reared alone, infested or not (CI and CNI). This deviee with a continuous driving was studied for two years with measurements on the sward, individual measures of intake, digestibility, parasitism and growth ofthe goats. The highest growth rates were measured with the mixed pasture as goats are infested or not (43.25 and 31.68 g / d for MN! and MI vs. 32.44 and 17,91 g / d) with lower biomass. The herbage intake and the digested herbage intake were well correlated to the growth rate, unIike parasitic variables, and highlight the role of diet in the benefit of mixed driving for goats. Therefore, the infested goats with Haemonchus, expressed greater resilience with improved growth performance compared with controls. Parallel to the study ofmixed pasture, another integrated management of grazing was studied, based on the use of vermicompost and relying on the same levers. namelv throuzh feedinz and parasitism

Résumé : A specific breeding goal definition was developed for Creole goats in Guadeloupe. This local breed is used for meat production. To ensure a balanced selection outcome, the breeding objective included two production traits, live weight (BW11) and dressing percentage (DP) at 11 months (the mating or selling age), one reproduction trait, fertility (FER), and two traits to assess animal response to parasite infection: packed cell volume (PCV), a resilience trait, and faecal worm eggs count (FEC), a resistance trait. A deterministic bio-economic model was developed to calculate the economic values based on the description of the profit of a Guadeloupean goat farm. The farm income came from the sale of animals for meat or as reproducers. The main costs were feeding and treatments against gastro-intestinal parasites. The economic values were 7.69€ per kg for BW11, 1.38€ per % for FER, 3.53€ per % for DP and 3 × 10(-4)€ per % for PCV. The economic value for FEC was derived by comparing the expected profit and average FEC in a normal situation and in an extreme situation where parasites had developed resistance to anthelmintics. This method yielded a maximum weighting for FEC, which was -18.85€ per log(eggs per gram). Alternative scenarios were tested to assess the robustness of the economic values to variations in the economic and environmental context. The economic values of PCV and DP were the most stable. Issues involved in paving the way for selective breeding on resistance or resilience to parasites are discussed.

Résumé : Les deux principaux objectifs de ce travail sont de proposer des outils pour la selection d'animaux résistants aux strongles gastro-intestinaux, parasites du tube digestif, et de faire progresser la compréhension des mécanismes de résistance chez la chèvre créole. La variabilité génétique du caractère de résistance au parasitisme digestif a été étudiée afin de vérifier quels critères décrivant le mieux la résistance, peuvent être utilisés pour la sélection. L'ensemble des résultats obtenus suggèrent que le critère d'excrétion d'oeufs et le critère d'éosinophilie sont les plus adaptés pour un schéma de sélection puisqu'ils possèdent une héritabillté moyenne et représentent le mieux la résistance. De plus, ils ne semblent pas en opposition avec le poids, principal critère de production. Le déterminisme génétique de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux a été étudié et a permis de mettre en évidence l'existence d'un gène majeur pour la résistance chez la population de chèvre créole. De plus, la primo-détection de qtl a permis d'identifier 13 régions du génome ayant un effet sur les critères de résistance. Les mécanismes responsables de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux ont également été à l'étude. L'ensemble des résultats met en évidence le rôle des éosinophiles dans la mise en place de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux. L'activité des immunogobulines e semblent dirigés vers les larves l3 d'haemonchus contortus et suggère la mise en place d'une réaction protectrice. Chez la chèvre créole. Ces deux mécanismes semblent donc jouer un rôle important dans la mise en place de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux
The two main objectives of this work are to propose tools for the selection of resistant animals to gastrointestinal nematodes and advance knowledge on mechanisms of resistance of creole goats. this work has analysed the genetic variability of resistance to digestive parasitism in order to determine which criteria best describes the resistance and can be use for selection. the overall results suggest that the egg excretion and the eosinophilia are the criteria most suitable for a breeding scheme because they have moderate heritability estimates and best represent the resistance. moreover, they do not seem in conflict with the weight, the main criterion of production. the genetic determinism of resistance to gastrointestinal parasites has been studied and has highlighted the existence of a major gene for resistance in creole goats. in addition, the primodetection of qtl identified 13 genomic regions that affect the resistance. the mechanisms behind the resistance to gastrointestinal parasites were also studied and first hypothesis regarding the involvment of the immune response in resistance have been made in goats. the overall results highlighted the role of eosinophils in the development of resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes. the activity of immunoglobulin e seems directed toward l3 larvae of haemonchus contortus and may be imply in the establishment of a protective response agasint nematode parasites. in creole goats, these two mechanisms seem to play an important role in the development of resistance to gastrointestinal nematode infections
