This study constitutes one of the few works conducted on the colonization of recent lava flows by fish communities in coral reef environment. It attempted to describe the mechanisms of colonization and environmental variables infuencing the structure of communities on the lava flows of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano at Reunion Island. It also proposed some hypotheses on the mechanisms of selection and speciation of endemic species of thesouthwestern Indian Ocean region, particularly diversified on the most recent lava flows of the Piton de la Fournaise, and provided a model of distribution of environmental and fish assemblage variables in four homogeneous patterns of colonization (landscapes) retained within the study area. The results showed fish community structure strongly related to measured environmental variables, of which depth, width of the island shelf, age of the lava flow and distance to the most recent lava flow were the most influential. It also appeared that the maximum endemic species richness was measured on the shallower stations, with narrow insular shelf, located on recent lava flows, near the lava flow from the eruption of 2007 (latest volcanic event). These characteristics define a harsh environment, to which endemic species seem well-adapted due in particular to their strong demographic and dietary flexibility. Finally, the patterns of colonization were characterized by significantly different environmental variables. The four homogeneous areas, defined by two geomorphological features, basalt blocks and drop-offs, nested within two locations, inside and outside the volcanic enclosure (current caldera), hosted fish communities whose dominant diets mainly depend on the nature, the abundance and the accessibility of available food resources. Overall, the study highlights that during early stages of ecological succession, site selection by fish communities is highly dependent on environmental constraints, specially of volcanic origin, but the physical habitat selection (geomorphology, substrate rugosity, percentage of soft substrate) seems to have littleimportance, while at least on the trophic structure and the distribution of endemic species.

Résumé : French Polynesia started it's Fish Aggregating Device programme in June 1981 with the positioning of the first buoy offshore of the main island of Tahiti. Since then, 251 structures have been installed throughout the 5 archipelagoes of this French overseas territory. The shape and size of the devices have evolved 8 times over this period, however, a single model has not yet been adopted. Trials are currently underway using lighter structures similar to those found in the Indian Ocean. The anchoring lines have progressively been modified through better knowledge of material and product availability, as well as better understanding of environmental constraints. The programme is entirely financed by the territorial government and managed by the public sector. This ongoing technical assistance, aimed towards the local small-scale coastal fishery, is considered an important factor to maintaining this activity alive. Up until 1997, this economical support policy of outer island populations far from the metropolis central town, along with incidental fishing methods around FADs, have given mitigated results without nevertheless putting into cause this programme. The use of 'drifting handlines' retained at the surface by small indicator floats are one of the contributing factors to the degradation of the anchor lines. It is now commonly accepted that a new fishing strategy must be adopted so that professional coastal fishermen become more aware with regards to an expensive work tool due to local bathymetric conditions, so that fishing effort is increased through the development of better adapted fishing techniques, and finally so that community spirit rules over individualism.Original Abstract: Le programme d'ancrage de DCP en Polynesie francaise a vu le jour en juin 1981 avec l'implantation d'un premier dispositif au large des cotes de Tahiti. Depuis cette date, ce sont 251 structures qui ont ete installees dans les cinq archipels de ce pays d'outre-mer. La forme et la taille des bouees ont evolue huit fois sans etre definitivement arretees a un seul modele et des essais sur des structures legeres de type " Ocean Indien " sont en cours. Les lignes d'ancrage ont fait l'objet de modifications progressives en raison de meilleures connaissances des produits ainsi que des contraintes du milieu environnant. Ce programme est finance en totalite par le territoire de la Polynesie francaise et gere par le secteur public. Il s'adresse a la pecherie artisanale et cotiere qui considere depuis de nombreuses annees cette assistance technique comme un atout indispensable au maintien de son activite. La politique d'engagement de ce soutien economique jusqu'en 1997 aupres des populations d'iles et atolls tres eloignes de la capitale ainsi que l'incidence de la technique de peche la plus repandue autour des DCP ont abouti a des resultats mitiges sans pour autant remettre en cause ce programme. En effet, les lignes a main derivantes et retenues en surface par une petite bouee temoin sont un des principaux facteurs de degradation des lignes d'ancrage. Il est desormais reconnu par tous les intervenants qu'une nouvelle strategie doit etre deployee afin que les pecheurs cotiers professionnels soient mieux responsabilises face a un outil de travail onereux en raison de la bathymetrie environnante, pour que l'effort de peche soit accru par l'utilisation de techniques de peche mieux adaptees, et enfin que l'esprit communautaire prime sur l'individualisme.

Résumé : Marine capture fisheries in Jamaica is primarily artisanal in nature ansd is conducted maiinly by fishermen operating from canoes. Approximately 95% of these fishermen operate on the coastal shelf and its associated banks. The commercial species harvested comprise bottom-dwelling, coral reef species and free swimming species of finfish. Other fishery resources of commercial value include marine shrimp, conch and lobsters. Catch statistics are not available for all species, but the Department of Fisheries reports a slight decline in fishery production with production decreasing from 16 milion lbs in 1990, despite the fact that fishing efforts have doubled. Over this period the number of registered fishermen has grown from 12 000 to 16 000, al of whom are engaged in full-time fishing. There arealso part-time fishermen who are not registered. The decline in fish catch is accompanied by a decrease in fish size and quality, suggesting that the fisheries are under pressure and have already exceeded optimum production in relation to vailable resources. As a result the economic returns to fishermen are declining. There are also other problems, such as high incidence of conflicts among fishermen at sea, the high cost of purchasing boats, outboard engine fuel, and equipment, with together with the dangers involved in fishing offshore (piracy, and praedial larceny) create serious social ans economic difficulties for fishermen. Notwithstanding, there is an apparent move on the part of the fishermen to leave the industryor to seek alternative forms of employment. In fact, the Department ofFisheries reports that it is still reciving applications for new licences to operate fishing boats. This is probably due to the fact that where the basis of a community is fishing, it becomes difficult to introduce alternative forms of employment, such as cottage industries, village crafts and other trades. In 1987 the Jamaica Department of Fisheries prepared a Management plan which proposed several conservation measures to promote the efficient use of fisheries resources and to control the development of the Fishery in such a way that the country would receive highest benefits. Adequate attention was given to limitations on fishing gear, institution of closed seasons and related legislation. Strategies to diversify the marine fishing were also proposed. The 1990 five year Devlopment Plan for marine fisheries also focuses on proper resource management in order to reverse trends associated with the overexploitation of marine resources. According to the plan, emphasis will be placed on inland fisheries and mariculture in order to reduce pressure on the fisheries. Inland fisheries in the form of freshwater fish fanning has expanded significantly over the past 10 years with production increasing from less than 0,5 million lbs. in 1980 to in excess of 6.0 million lbs. in 1989. However, some freshwater fish farmers are already experiencing serious competition for water usage and, to a lesser extent for land from crop-producing farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture is of the view that marine cage culture technologically has the potential for introduction in Jamaica . This technologyhas been successfully developed in Norway and the technology is currentlty being experimentally utilized in several countries in the area. The technology, if widely utilized in Jamaica, couls significantly reduce pressure on fisheries, making fishing more cost effective and improve the economic returns to fishermen. Already there exist some technical and institutional capabilities in Jamaica to support commercial development of marine cage culture. The Department of Fisheries has highly trained personnel in aquaculture and marine fisherie, some of whom are directly responsible for the success of freshwater fish fanning. In adition, the Marine Laboratory at the Univesity of the West Indies (UWI) is caarying research on hatchery facilities for marine cage farming. The Department of Fisheries will seek the collaboration ofg the marine unit at UWI which could provide fingerlings of selected marine species for cage 1
Les pêcheries de captage marin en Jamaïque sont principalement de nature artisanale et elles sont dirigées principalement par les pêcheurs qui travaillent depuis des canoës. Environ 95 % de ces pêcheurs travaillent sur la plaine côtière et ses bancs associés. Les espèces commerciales récoltées comprennent les espèces benthiques, les espèces de corail et les espèces de poisson marin de nage libre. D'autres ressources de pêcheries de valeur commerciale comprennent la crevette, la conque et le homard. Les statistiques des pêches ne sont pas disponibles pour toutes les espèces, mais le Département des Pêcheries fait état d'une légère réduction de production de pêcheries, la production se réduisant de 16 millions de livres en 1990, en dépit du fait que les efforts de la pêche ont doublé. Sur cette période le nombre de pêcheurs inscrits a augmenté de 12 000 à 16 000, dont tous sont occupés à plein temps à la pêche. Il y a aussi des pêcheurs à mi-temps qui ne sont pas inscrits. La réduction des pêches est accompagnée d'une réduction de la taille et la qualité des poissons, ce qui implique que les pêcheries sont sous pression et qu'elles ont déjà dépassé la production optimum par rapport aux ressources disponibles. En conséquence, les rendements pour les pêcheurs sont en baisse. Il y a aussi d'autres problèmes, tels qu'un taux élevé de conflits entre les pêcheurs en mer, le coût élevé pour acheter les bateaux, le combustible pour les moteurs hors-bord, et le matériel, ainsi que les dangers impliqués dans la pêche offshore (le piratage, et le vol prédial) ont créé de graves problèmes sociaux et économiques pour les pêcheurs. Néanmoins, il y a une tendance évidente chez les pêcheurs de quitter l'industrie ou de chercher du travail dans d'autres domaines. En fait, le Département des Pêcheries signale qu'il continue de recevoir des demandes de nouveaux permis pour opérer les bateaux de pêche. Ceci est probablement attribuable au fait que là où la base d'une communauté est la pêche, il est difficile d'y introduire des formes alternatives de travail, telles que l'industrie artisanale, l'artisanat de village ou d'autres métiers. Le Département des Pêcheries de la Jamaïque a préparé en 1987 un Projet de gestion qui proposait plusieurs mesures de conservation afin d'encourager l'utilisation efficace des ressources des pêcheries et de contrôler le développement de la Pêcherie de manière que le pays touche le plus de bénéfices. Une attention adéquate a été prêtée aux limitations sur les engins de la pêche, l'établissement de saisons de clôture et les législations associées. Des stratégies pour diversifier la pêche marine ont aussi été proposées. Le Plan de développement quinquennal de 1990 pour les pêcheries marines met l'accent aussi sur la gestion de ressources appropriée afin de faire reculer les tendances associées à la surexploitation des ressources marines. Selon le plan, l'accent sera mis sur les pêcheries intérieures et la mariculture afin de réduire la pression sur les pêcheries. Les pêcheries intérieures, sous la forme de l'élevage de poissons en eau douce, ont pris leur essor sur les 10 dernières années avec une production qui s'est élevée de moins de 0,5 millions de livres en 1980 pour atteindre en 1989 plus de 6.0 millions de livres. Cependant, certains pisciculteurs en eau douce expérimentent déjà une concurrence sérieuse avec les agriculteurs pour l'usage de l'eau et, dans une moindre mesure, de la terre. Le Ministère de l'Agriculture est de l'avis que l'élevage en cage marine a technologiquement le potentiel d'être introduit en Jamaïque. La technologie a été développée avec réussite en Norvège et plusieurs pays dans la région utilisent actuellement la technologie expérimentalement. La technologie, si elle était utilisée en Jamaïque, pourrait réduire de façon significative la pression sur les pêcheries, ce qui rendrait la pêche plus économique et améliorerait les rendements aux pêcheurs. Certaines capacités techniques et institutionnelles existent déjà en Jamaïque qui pourraient soutenir le développement de l'élevage en cage marine. Le Département des Pêcheries a un personnel bien formé en aquaculture et pêcherie marine, dont certains qui sont directement responsables du succès de la pisciculture en eau douce. Par ailleurs, le Laboratoire Marin à l'Université des Antilles (UWI) mène des recherches sur les installations d'écloseries pour l'élevage en cage marine. Le Département des Pêcheries demandera la collaboration de l'unité marine à l'UWI qui pourra fournir des saumoneaux d'espèces marines sélectionnées pour la cage 1.

Résumé : One of the main challenges in ecology is to understand how global changes affect biodiversity and what are the consequences on ecosystem functioning. In this perspective, the functional diversity of communities is a cornerstone since it allows linking environment, community structure and ecosystem properties. The aim of this thesis is thus to improve the understanding of functional diversity dynamic (i) in relation to natural variability of environmental conditions and (ii) under anthropogenic disturbances. As a first step we have developed a new methodological framework allowing to (1) describe fish functional niches based on functional traits, and (2) to quantify functional diversity within (α) and among (β) sites thanks to new indices. In a second step we have studied the spatiotemporal dynamic of the functional structure of fish and nektonic communities from the Terminos lagoon (Mexico). This tropical estuarine ecosystem is an appropriate ecological model for our problematic as it is characterized by a strong environmental variability, a high biological diversity and is under a strong human pressure. We have put in light the stability of the functional and trophic structures of communities along environmental gradients, despite a very strong species turnover. This stability is determined by the dominance of a couple of functional groups inside which species are replacing each others according to their environmental preferences. However, at a long-term scale, we have demonstrated a functional diversity loss in a part of the lagoon despite an increase of species richness. This paradox has to be related to the decrease of species associated to seagrass and the increase of more estuarine species.
Un des enjeux majeurs de l'écologie est de comprendre comment les changements globaux affectent la biodiversité et quelles en sont les conséquences sur le fonctionnement des écosystèmes. Dans cette perspective, la diversité fonctionnelle des communautés est un outil clé permettant de lier l'environnement, la structure des communautés et les propriétés écosystémiques. L'objectif de cette thèse est donc d'améliorer la compréhension de la dynamique de la diversité fonctionnelle (i) face à des conditions environnementales naturellement variables et (ii) face à des perturbations d'origine anthropique. Dans un premier temps nous avons mis en place un socle méthodologie nous permettant de (1) définir la niche fonctionnelle des poissons à partir de traits fonctionnels et (2) de quantifier les diversités fonctionnelles intra (α) et inter (β) échantillons avec de nouveaux indices. Dans un second temps nous avons étudié la dynamique spatio-temporelle de la structure fonctionnelle des communautés ichtyologiques et nectoniques peuplant la lagune de Terminos (Mexique). Cet écosystème estuarien tropical est un modèle d'étude adapté à notre problématique car il présente une forte variabilité environnementale, une forte diversité biologique et est sous forte pression anthropique. Nous avons mis en évidence une stabilité de la structure fonctionnelle et trophique des communautés face aux gradients environnementaux très marqués, et donc malgré un fort taux de remplacement des espèces entre les communautés. Cette stabilité est due à la dominance de quelques groupes fonctionnels à l'intérieur desquels les espèces se remplacent suivant leurs preferendums environnementaux. Néanmoins, à plus long terme, nous avons démontré qu'une portion de la lagune avait subi une perte de diversité fonctionnelle et ce malgré une augmentation de la richesse spécifique. Ce paradoxe est à relier au remplacement des espèces inféodées aux herbiers de phanérogames par des espèces plus estuariennes.

Résumé : Les mattes de procaryotes constituent une niche écologique diversifiée. peu étudié!<..en mangrove et jamais décrjte dans les Antilles. L'objectif de cette thèse est de décrire les procaryotes filamenteux reposant sur le sédiment marin et de caractériser les interactions entre la matte, milieu et entre les différents micro-organismes. Nous avons d'abord caractérisé les micro-organismes majoritaires de la matte par le séquençage de l'ADNr 16S et des hybridations moléculaires (FISH). Il a ainsi été possible de décrire deux nouvelles espèces de Beggiatoaceae dont la structure a été étudiée par microscopie électronique. De plus, afin de caractériser l'environnement chimique de ces bactéries, des capteurs potentiométriques ont été utilisés. Ils ont permis de démontrer que les Beggiaotaceae oxydaient les sulfures en prélevant l'oxygène du milieu, tandis que des analyses de microscopie couplées à de l'EDX ont mis en évidence des réserves de soufre intracellulaires dans ces bactéries. Le séquençage de l'ADNr 16S des cyanobactéries filamenteuses a mis en évidence quatre nouvelles espèces de l'ord~e des Oscillatoriales. Deux d'entre elles, du genre Planktothricoides ont révélé une toxicité positive sur les Artemia sp:, les deux autres ont été identifiées comme proches d'Oscillatoria spongeliae, une espèce symbiotique d'éponge, bien que les coupes uItrafines d'une de ces souches aient montré une morphologie interne proche des Tychonema. L'analyse des données a permis d'étoffer les connaissances sur les communautés microbiennes de mangrove et constitue une base intéressante de travail sur la contribution des micro-organismes au fonctionnement de l'écosystème mangrove dans son ensemble
Procaryotic mats are ecological niches, occuring in many ecosystems. Those structures are little studied in marine mangrove sediment and have never been described in West Indies. The purpose ofthis thesis is to characterize the interactions between the mat and the environment, and between the different filamentous micro-organisms living into the mat. In a first place, we characterized the mainly micro-organisrns of the mat by sequencing 16S rDNA. We confirmed these sequences by molecular hybridization (FISH) with specific probes designed from sequences obtained. Thus, it was possible to describe two new Beggiatoaceae strains, whose structure has been studied by electronic microscopy. Furthemore, we used potentiometric captors in situ and in laboratory, by creating a mesocosm, in order to define the chemical environment where involved these bacteria. These experiences proved that the Beggiatoaceae of the mat oxidized the sulfur taking the oxygen from the medium, while the microscopic analysis coupled with EDX showed intracellular sulfur granules into the bacteria. The study of the filamentous cyanobacteria of the mat highlighted four new cyanobacteria strains, all studied by electronic rmcroscopy. Two of them belongs to Planktothrlcoides genus and showed positive toxicity on Artemia salina. The others species are close to Oscillatorla spongeliae, a sponge symbiont, nevertheless, one ofthem showed an intemal morphology close to Tychonema. The analysis of the different results adduces sorne knowledge about mangrove microbial communities. Furthermore, this study can be used as an interesting base to study the micro-organisms contribution in functioning mangrove ecosystem

Résumé : Fish communities from two lagoon ecosystems, Ria Formosa (Portugal) and Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin (Guadeloupe), show interesting similarities of spatial and temporal organization. On the temporal scale, three community changes are observed in both systems, corresponding to massive arrivals and/or departures of migratory species. However, these migrations are more conspicuous in the Ria Formosa than in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. On a spatial scale, the community structure is also largely determined by migratory species, whose abundance is a factor of homogenization. This is clearly observed in Ria Formosa, where the lagoon selection applies on a regional scale. Conversely, the community of sedentary fish identifies remarkable stations affected by chronic aggressions such as tourism or pollution. An explicative analysis, comprising a discriminant analysis and multiple regressions was realized on the data collected in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. This analysis made it possible to determine the important environmental descriptors in the two complementary processes involved in recruitment: migrant availability, which determines the temporal organization of the fish assemblage. These migrations are explained by water temperature and salinity, two descriptors controlled by climatic conditions; the settlement process, which determines the spatial organization of the fish assemblage. This is explained by habitat descriptors such as visibility and turtlegrass blade length, or trophic descriptors, such as primary production, zooplankton density or nitrate concentration.

Résumé : This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices were used in order to characterise the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The data were provided by yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for stock assessment. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are included in the analysis when the index values are available from the published literature (North Sea, Scotian Shelf, Kenya, French Guyana). From the diversity indices analysis it is argued that the Gulf of Lions community is more diverse and less disturbed than the Bay of Biscay one. This result is not consistent with a fishing effect. It is interpreted as a biogeography pattern. The total biomass variability and the slope variability of size spectra are higher in the most harvested areas than in the least ones. On the contrary, the species-area slope is the lowest in the most harvested areas. Theoretically, biotic interactions decrease the total biomass variability and the spectra slope variability because of compensations, and increase the species area slope because of competitive exclusion. It is concluded that harvesting alters biotic interactions and favours local coexistence by decreasing competitive exclusion. The species diversity maintenance depends on competitive exclusion. Hence, biodiversity is threatened not only by a direct fishing effect but also by a dynamics alteration.
Ce mémoire aborde le problème de l'impact de l'exploitation par la pêche sur la dynamique de diversité des peuplements de poissons démersaux. Les effets de la pêche sur le rôle des interactions biotiques entre espèces dans la dynamique des peuplements sont plus particulièrement analysés à l'aide de descripteurs multispécifiques. Les descripteurs utilisés sont les indices de diversité, la variabilité temporelle de la biomasse totale et de la pente multispécifique du spectre de poids et la pente des droites d'accumulation d'espèces mesurant la ségrégation spatiale. Les valeurs de ces indices sont calculées à partir des données de campagnes annuelles de chalutage de fond EVHOE, CHALIST et MEDITS, menées par l'IFREMER depuis 1983 pour évaluer les ressources halieutiques dans le golfe de Gascogne et dans le golfe du Lion. Les différences de caractéristiques de dynamique entre les deux peuplements révélées par ces descripteurs sont mises en relation avec un indice d'exploitation (valeur moyenne des débarquements annuels, divisée par la surface du plateau de la région concernée). D'autres régions ont été intégrées dans cette analyse lorsque les valeurs des indicateurs étaient disponibles dans la littérature (Mer du Nord, plateau de Nouvelle-Ecosse, Kenya et Guyane Française). Les indices de diversité utilisés permettent de mettre en évidence que le peuplement du golfe du Lion est plus diversifié et moins soumis à perturbations que celui du golfe de Gascogne. Ces caractéristiques semblent dues à l'histoire biogéographique de ces deux régions et non à un effet de la pêche. La variabilité de la biomasse totale et celle de la pente du spectre multispécifique augmentent depuis les régions les moins exploitées vers les plus exploitées. A l'inverse, la ségrégation spatiale diminue. En théorie, les interactions entre espèces diminuent la variabilité temporelle de la biomasse totale et de la pente du spectre multispécifique, à cause de compensations entre espèces, et augmentent la ségrégation spatiale par exclusion compétitive. L'interprétation donnée des résultats obtenus est ainsi une altération des interactions entre les espèces par l'exploitation. En prélevant de la biomasse, l'exploitation augmente la disponibilité des ressources pour les individus non pêchés. En conséquence, l'exclusion compétitive diminue et la coexistence locale des individus est facilitée. A long terme, la diversité est donc menacée, non seulement par raréfaction des espèces prélevées par l'exploitation mais aussi parce que les interactions sont altérées et que le maintien de la diversité en dépend pour partie.

Résumé : Estimating diversity and abundance of fish is fundamental for the understanding of community structure and dynamics of coral reefs. Observations are generally gathered using Underwater Visual Census (UVC). These informations can also be collected by underwater video techniques involving no diver and allowing a high spatial and temporal coverage. The first part of this PhD thesis is a review of publications using underwater video techniques between 1952 and 2012. The second part present two rotating video systems used to study the diversity of ichthyofauna and habitats in the lagoon of New Caledonia: the STAVIRO (for "STAtion VIdeo ROtative") and the MICADO (for "Module d’Imagerie Côtier, Autonome pour le Développement de l’Observation sous-marine"). The third part of this work is a comparison of these techniques with UVCs and an analysis of the “observer effect” for the rotating video techniques. The comparison between rotating video systems and UVC showed that: (i) fish community data collected by UVC and by STAVIRO differed significantly; (ii) species richness and density of large species were not significantly different between techniques; (iii) species richness and density of small species were higher for UVC; (iv) density of fished species was higher for STAVIRO; and (v) only UVC detected significant differences in fish assemblages structure across reef type. The comparison of fish counts obtained from the same videos by different observers showed that for a defined list of species, estimates of species richness and total abundance can be considered as similar between observers with sufficient experiences (> 6 months). The last part of this PhD is an application of rotating video techniques to the study of daily temporal variations of the ichthyofauna. Daily variations were observed depending on the time of day and the tidal state and typical patterns of variations have been described for some species groups. The outcomes of this work bring original insights of new techniques complementary to traditional techniques in order to enhance our understanding of the functioning and dynamic of coral reef.
L’estimation de la diversité et de l’abondance des espèces de poissons est fondamentale pour comprendre la structure des communautés et la dynamique des récifs coralliens. Les observations sont généralement obtenues par des recensements visuels en scaphandre autonome (UVC). Ces informations peuvent également être obtenues de manière originale grâce aux observations issues des techniques vidéo sous-marines modernes sans plongeur qui permettent des couvertures spatiales et temporelles accrues. La première phase de ce travail de thèse synthétise l’ensemble des travaux ayant été effectués avec des techniques vidéo entre 1952 et 2012. La seconde phase, présente deux systèmes vidéo rotatifs complémentaires, utilisés pour étudier la diversité de l’ichtyofaune et des habitats marins dans le lagon de Nouvelle-Calédonie : le STAVIRO (pour « STAtion VIdéo ROtative ») et le MICADO (pour « Module d’Imagerie Côtier, Autonome pour le Développement de l’Observation sous-marine »). La troisième phase de ce travail consiste à comparer ces systèmes vidéo aux UVC puis à examiner l’effet « observateur » inhérent aux techniques vidéo rotatives. Il résulte de cette étude que : (i) les observations des communautés de poissons par UVC et STAVIRO différaient significativement, (ii) la richesse spécifique et la densité des espèces de grande taille n'étaient pas significativement différentes entre les techniques, (iii) la diversité et la densité des espèces de petite taille étaient plus élevés avec les UVC; (iv) la densité des espèces pêchées était plus élevée avec les STAVIRO et (v) seuls les UVC ont détecté des différences de structure des assemblages en fonction du type de récif. L’étude de l’effet « observateur » a montré que sur une liste d’espèces définie, les dénombrements et les identifications des individus peuvent être considérées comme similaires entre observateurs ayant une expérience suffisante (> 6 mois). La dernière phase de ce travail a permis d’appliquer la technique MICADO à l’étude des variations temporelles de l’ichtyofaune d’un site corallien à l’échelle de la journée. Elle a permis de mettre en évidence des variations cycliques journalières en fonction de l’heure et de la marée et des « profils type » de variations ont pu être identifiés pour certains groupes d’espèces. Ce travail de thèse permet ainsi de participer au développement de nouvelles techniques d’observations complémentaires des techniques traditionnelles afin d’enrichir les connaissances du fonctionnement et de la dynamique des écosystèmes coralliens.

Résumé : Sustainable management of natural resources, and in particular fisheries, must take into account several conflicting objectives. This is the case in the French Guiana shrimp fishery for which profitability objectives imply a reduction in the fishing activity. On the one hand, this fishery has negative externalities on marine biodiversity due to discards. On the other hand, this fishery has positive externalities on the economy of the local community and interestingly enough on a protected seabird species in the area (the Frigatebird that feeds on discards). In this paper, we examine the viability of that system considering two sustainability objectives: an economic objective in terms of the profitability of the fishing activity, and a conservation objective in terms of the Frigatebird population. For that purpose, we have developed a dynamic model of that bioeconomic system and study here the trade-offs between the two conflicting objectives. It provides a means to quantify the necessary give and takes involving the economic and ecological objectives that would ensure a viable management solution. Our study confirms the relevance of the viability approach to address natural resource management issues, which should lead to the development of new tools for the arbitration of conflicting sustainability, objectives. In particular, such tools could be used as a quantitative basis for cost-benefit analysis taking into account environmental externalities. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Résumé : This paper presents a survey of French Eastern English Channel fishers' observations of the past and current state of the marine ecosystem and their wishes for the future, as a first step towards formulating management objectives. Twenty-nine semi-directive interviews were carried out in June 2006 among fishers and shellfish farmers. Cognitive maps proved useful to formalise their experience and knowledge. Most interviewees mentioned a decrease of the resource in recent years and pointed out the presence of several problems, such as pollution, degradation of the ocean floor and harmful impacts of human activities, including fishing. The indicators used by the fishers as the basis to form their opinion were similar to those generally used by scientists for assessing the state of exploited marine populations and communities (average fish length, CPUE, fished biomass...); additional indicators were the timing and duration of fishing seasons. Résumé : The necessity to move from a traditional fishery management to an ecosystem approach is now acknowledged. Indicators are required to support the development of this approach. For example, community indicators have been proposed to assess the impact of fishing. We tested here the applicability of one such community indicator, the abundance-biomass comparison (ABC method), as a measure of the impact of bottom trawling (years of sampling: 2001 and 2003) on the benthic invertebrates-typically starfishes, crabs, squat lobsters, shrimps and large hard-shelled molluscs-of "Grande Vasiere", a major French fishing zone, in the Bay of Biscay. The ABC method is generally used as an impact indicator for different types of physical, biological and anthropogenic disturbances on benthic communities. This method is based on the assumption that increasing disturbance shifts communities from dominance by large-bodied species with low turnover rates toward dominance by small-bodied species with high turnover rates. At less disturbed areas the average biomass of individuals is greater than at more heavily disturbed areas. The ABC method measures this effect by comparing the ranked distributions of abundance and biomass within a given community. We applied the ABC method and compared the size structure and the species diversity at two areas exposed to moderate and high bottom trawl effort. Species diversity was lower in the most exploited area. The highly trawled area was dominated by opportunistic organisms, mainly one species of swimming crab Liocarcinus depurator, one species of squat lobster Munida rugosa and Norway lobsters Nephrops norvegicus, which are large-bodied species. Consequently, the results of the ABC method were inconsistent with the theoretical expectation for these particular macrofaunal communities and the measured levels of fishing intensity.
La nécessité de passer d'une gestion monospécifique des pêches à une approche écosystémique est largement reconnue. Pour mettre en place une telle approche, des indicateurs ont été proposés afin d'estimer l'impact de la pêche sur les communautés. Nous avons testé l'efficacité de l'un de ces indicateurs, la comparaison abondance-biomasse (méthode ABC), pour mesurer l'impact du chalutage de fond (année d'échantillonnage : 2001 et 2003) sur les communautés de la macrofaune benthique de la Grande Vasière, golfe de Gascogne (typiquement des crabes, étoiles de mer, des galathées, de gros mollusques à coquille dure). La méthode ABC est généralement utilisée comme un indicateur d'impact de différents types de perturbations physiques, biologiques et anthropiques sur les communautés benthiques. Cette méthode est basée sur l'hypothèse qu'un régime de perturbation croissant entraîne une modification de la structure des communautés qui deviennent graduellement dominées par des espèces opportunistes de petite taille caractérisées par un renouvellement rapide. Dans une communauté modérément perturbée, la biomasse moyenne des individus est ainsi plus grande que dans une communauté fortement perturbée. La méthode ABC mesure cet effet en comparant les distributions en biomasse et densité dans chaque communauté. Nous avons appliqué la méthode ABC et étudié la structure en taille et la diversité spécifique des communautés benthiques en comparant deux zones, l'une soumise à un effort de pêche modéré et l'autre à un important effort de pêche. La diversité spécifique était plus faible sur les sites fortement chalutés. Ces sites étaient dominés par des organismes opportunistes de grande taille, principalement une espèce de crabe nageur Liocarcinus depurator, une espèce de galathée Munida rugosa et des langoustines Nephrops norvegicus. Dans ces conditions, les résultats de la méthode ABC n'étaient pas cohérents avec la théorie pour ces communautés de macro-invertébrés benthiques et les efforts de pêche mesurés.

Résumé : Les ressources marines constituent une richesse économique d’une grande importance pour un grand nombre de pays de la planète. Du fait de l’action de l’homme, ces ressources subissent une fragilisation et une raréfaction dues entre autres à la pollution, à la surpêche, à l’urbanisation intensive... S’ajoute à cette liste, depuis quelques années, le réchauffement de la planète qui affecte d’une manière sensible la diversité biologique marine. Pourtant les réponses internationales face à cette dégradation, au-delà du fait qu’elles sont timides, sont rares. Il faudra dès lors se rabattre sur les solutions de lutte globale contre le réchauffement de la planète entreprise par la communauté internationale afin de contrer cette dégradation.
Marine resources are a wealth of great economic importance for many countries in the world. Due to the action of man, these resources undergo embrittlement and rarification among others to pollution, overfishing, urbanization, intensive ... Added to this list in recent years, the global warming that affects a significantly marine biodiversity. Yet the international response to this degradation, beyond the fact that they are shy, is rare. It will therefore fall back on solutions to the global fight against global warming taken by the international community to counter this degradation.

Résumé : Cette étude permet une approche distincte de la réflexion sur les ressources marines dans le cadre d’une aire protégée. En effet, les écosystèmes marins sont essentiels d’autant plus, qu’ils présentent en Nouvelle-Calédonie une grande richesse, notamment en termes de patrimoine culturel. Ce sont majoritairement les Kanak qui habitent sur la Côte Est de la Province nord, où la Collectivité et le WWF collaborent à la mise en place de plusieurs aires marines protégées (AMP). Jusqu’à présent, la gestion coutumière Kanak a permis une relative préservation de ces écosystèmes dans un secteur littoral non soumis aux pressions de l’urbanisation, du tourisme ou de la navigation. L’étude s’attache à souligner les enjeux autour de la mise en place des AMP et des perspectives de développement local, sur le milieu marin et les populations locales. Il s’agit de voir comment cette expérimentation est envisagée par les différents acteurs (État, Province Nord, associations, coutumiers, etc.) et de s’interroger sur les mécanismes de gouvernance.
This study allows a distinct approach to thinking about the marine resources in a protected area. Indeed, marine ecosystems are essential, especially as they are in New Caledonia, particularly in terms of cultural heritage. It is mainly Kanak who live on the East Coast of the North Province, where the Community and WWF collaborate on the installation of several marine protected areas (MPAs). So far, the Kanak customary management allowed a relative preservation of these ecosystems in a coastal area not subject to the pressures of urbanization, tourism and navigation. The study aims to highlight the issues surrounding the establishment of MPAs and opportunities for local development on the marine environment and local populations. This is to see how this experiment is considered by the various actors (State, Northern Province, associations, etc. customary). And to consider the mechanisms of governance.

Conservation commonly requires trade-offs between social and ecological goals. For tropical small-scale fisheries, spatial scales of socially appropriate management are generally small— the median no-take locally managed marine area (LMMA) area throughout the Pacific is less than 1 km 2. This is of particular concern for large coral reef fishes, such as many species of grouper, which migrate to aggregations to spawn. Current data suggest that the catchment areas (i.e. total area from which individuals are drawn) of such aggregations are at spatial scales that preclude effective community-based management with no-take LMMAs. We used acoustic telemetry and tag-returns to examine reproductive migrations and catchment areas of the grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus at a spawning aggregation in Papua New Guinea. Protection of the resultant catchment area of approximately 16 km 2 using a no-take LMMA is socially untenable here and throughout much of the Pacific region. However, we found that spawning migrations were skewed towards shorter distances. Consequently, expanding the current 0.2 km 2 no-take LMMA to 1–2 km 2 would protect approximately 30–50% of the spawning population throughout the non-spawning season. Contrasting with current knowledge, our results demonstrate that species with moderate reproductive migrations can be managed at scales congruous with spatially restricted management tools.

Résumé : L’Union européenne opère actuellement la seconde révision de sa politique de la pêche depuis la création de celle-ci, en 1970. Instituée pour développer la pêche maritime et garantir un revenu aux pêcheurs, la politique commune de la pêche (PCP) s’est orientée progressivement vers la protection des espèces et de l’environnement marin. Pour cela, elle a sacrifié une part importante du secteur productif, mais a échoué et, avec le déclin de la pêche en Europe, les régions ultrapériphériques de la Caraïbe (RUP-C) ont gagné en importance relative dans ce domaine. Elles représentent aujourd’hui près de 30 % de la flotte nationale et les fondements malthusiens de la PCP ne sont plus adaptés à leurs caractéristiques : ressources halieutiques, développement économique, emplois, sécurité des approvisionnements alimentaires, etc. La réforme actuellement en cours, qui devrait aboutir avant 2012, offre peut-être une alternative aux RUP-C permettant la mise en œuvre des mesures spécifiques en application de l’article 349 du Traité sur le Fonctionnement de l’Union européenne.
The European Union currently operates the second reform of its Common Fisheries Policy since its creation in 1970. Established to develop the fisheries and provide incomes for fishermen, the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) was directed gradually towards the protection of the species and the marine environment. To do this, it sacrificed a large part of the productive sector, but failed, and with the decline of fisheries in Europe, the outermost regions of the Caribbean gained relative importance in this field. They now account for nearly 30% of the national fleet and the Malthusians bases of the CFP are not suited any more to their characteristics: fisheries resources, economic development, jobs, security of food supply, etc. The ongoing reform, which should be in force before 2012, may offer an alternative to the outermost regions of the Caribbean for the implementation of specific measures under Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

Résumé : In recent years, the use of fads in Martinique has evolved from an experimental stage to a productive one. This transformation results in the pitching up of operational device park by the regional fishery committee. Nevertheless, this technical change in fishing practices is not implemented in a homogeneous way all around the island; some differences exist especially between the Atlantic and the Caribbean coasts. From surveys carried out during an annual cycle on two main landing sites, this study describes the pelagic fishing activity around fads and in the open sea. A comparison of fishing strategies adopted in different places as well as an analysis of the results obtained by the fishing units in terms of species (size of catches and daily yields) allow to describe the progress made in the implementation adoption of this new fishing practice. For several fishermen, fishing around fads has become an exclusive job, practised all year round. For others, fads is used in addition to traditional fishing activity on flotsam, "Miquelon" fishing and keeps a seasonal character.Original Abstract: Au cours des recentes annees, l'utilisation des DCP en Martinique est passee du stade experimental au stade operationnel. Cette mutation se traduit par la prise en charge du parc de dispositifs operationnels par le comite regional des peches. Toutefois, l'adoption de cette nouvelle technique d'exploitation ne s'effectue pas de facon homogene dans toutes les communes de l'ile, des differences existent notamment entre les cotes Atlantique et Caraibe. A partir d'enquetes effectuees pendant un cycle annuel, sur deux principaux points de debarquement, cette etude decrit l'activite de peche des poissons pelagiques avec ou sans DCP. Une comparaison des strategies de peche developpees dans les differents sites ainsi qu'une analyse des resultats obtenus par les unites de peche en termes d'especes, de taille des captures, de rendement journalier permettent de decrire la progression differenciee de l'adoption de cette nouvelle activite halieutique. Pour certains pecheurs, la peche sous DCP est devenue un metier exclusif, pratique tout au long de l'annee. Pour d'autres, le DCP est utilise en complement de l'activite traditionnelle de peche sous bois derivants, " peche a Miquelon ", et conserve un caractere saisonnier.

Résumé : Many fish species are at the southern or northern limit of their distribution range tit the Bay of Biscay, where large-scale hydroclimatic changes have occurred in recent decades. We attempt here to identify the impact of these changes on the fish community of the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay. Data collected during 14 autumn groundfish surveys in 1973 and from 1987 to 2002 are used. The study area is between latitudes 48 degrees 30'N and 43 degrees 30'N while the depth ranges from 15 to 200 m. Annual abundance indices (number of individuals per km(2)) of 56 fish taxa present on average in at least 5% of the tows are computed. Multivariate analysis is used to detect temporal trends in these species' abundance indices. Assuming that increased water temperature may favour Subtropical species and hinder temperate ones, knowledge about the latitudinal distribution range is used to interpret time trends. Results show an increasing abundance trend with time for fish species having a wide distribution range in latitude (mainly subtropical ones), whereas the abundance of temperate and the least widely distributed species decreased steadily.

Résumé : Monitoring of French Polynesia coral reefs and their recent development.-French Polynesia, consisting of 118 islands in the centre of the Pacific Ocean, has more than 15 000 km(2) of reefs and lagoons managed by the local government. Tourism and pearl culture are the two main economic resources of the country. Polynesian coral reefs are extremely diverse and are among those for which we have thorough knowledge. The exploitation of local resources has been recorded for multiple decades and includes : coral materials, fishing, harvest and export of mother-of-pearl molluscs, pearl production, and ornamental fish. All over the country, many monitoring programmes have been launched to measure the health of reefs and the natural and anthropogenic perturbations that they suffer : hurricanes and seismic events, water quality, health of benthic and fish communities, pearl oyster pathology and radiobiology. These data, collected over the last few decades, allowed to define the relative importance of natural and anthropogenic degradation on reefs and lagoons, and to explain the present status of reefs at different spatial scales. Devastating hurricanes are rare (1903-1906, 1982-1983 and occasionally at other times), but they may annihilate outer slope coral communities on some islands. Bleaching events with considerable coral mortality at different geographical scales occurred mainly in 1991, 1994 and 2003. Outbreaks of Acanthaster destroyed numerous reefs (lagoons and outer slopes) from 1978-1982 and a new demographic wave began in 2006 at many Society islands. Eutrophication events only occurred occasionally and only in some lagoons. Whereas natural catastrophic events degrade the coral reef ecosystem across many islands, at the archipelago or even regional scale, anthropogenic degradation is limited to a few Society Islands, occurring rarely on atolls and not at all on those (one third) which are uninhabited. The main causes of reef degradation in some areas of Tahiti and Moorea include the embankment of fringing zones, coral mining, overfishing, absence of urban sewage treatment and the development of leisure and tourism activities. Because of its large geographical extent, one may conclude that major reef degradation in French Polynesia is caused by catastrophic natural events. On the other hand, anthropogenic degradation is more localized. Unfortunately, the synergistic effects of these causes of degradation prevent reefs from recovering. Optimum coral cover on French Polynesian outer reef slopes is between 50-60%. After a major destructive impact (hurricane, bleaching, Acanthaster) a reef is reduced to less than 10% coral cover, however if no more major disturbance events occur a reef will recover in about 12 years. Most of the 15 000 km(2) of reefs and lagoons in French Polynesia are in good health, and along with their neighbouring reefs in East and Central Pacific they are considered as the least degraded reefs worldwide and at a low risk of becoming degraded in the few next decades. However, we are more and more anxious about the future of reefs in the world particularly because present simulations predict that major impacts of climate change would include : elevation of sea surface temperatures, increase in the strength of hurricanes and acidification of seawater which will affect the formation of coral structures.
La Polynésie française, 118 îles au coeur du Pacifique, possède une surface de plus de 15 000 km2 de récifs et lagons gérés par le gouvernement polynésien. Le tourisme et la perliculture représentent les deux ressources économiques majeures du Pays. Les formations récifales très diversifiées sont parmi les mieux connues. Plusieurs suivis d'exploitation des ressources sont opérationnels depuis des décennies : granulats coralliens, pêche pour l'alimentation, collecte et exportation de mollusques nacriers, production de perles, poissons d'ornement. À l'échelle du Pays de très nombreux programmes de surveillance de l'état des récifs et des perturbations qu'ils subissent, naturelles et anthropiques, ont été mis en place : perturbations cycloniques et sismiques, qualité des eaux, état de santé des peuplements benthiques et ichtyologiques, pathologie des nacres, radiobiologie. Toutes ces données recueillies au fi l des décennies ont permis d'établir l'importance relative des dégradations naturelles et anthropiques sur les récifs et lagons polynésiens et d'expliquer leur état de santé actuel en considérant différentes échelles spatiales. Les périodes cycloniques dévastatrices pour les récifs sont rares (1903-1906, 1982-1983 et épisodiquement) mais les cyclones ont parfois anéanti les communautés coralliennes de pentes externes dans certaines îles. Les blanchissements suivis de mortalités importantes à des échelles spatiales diverses, ont été surtout ceux de 1991, 1994 et 2003. Coral reefs are among the most species-rich and threatened ecosystems on Earth, yet the extent to which human stressors determine species occurrences, compared with biogeography or environmental conditions, remains largely unknown. With ever-increasing human-mediated disturbances on these ecosystems, an important question is not only how many species can inhabit local communities, but also which biological traits determine species that can persist (or not) above particular disturbance thresholds. Here we show that human pressure and seasonal climate variability are disproportionately and negatively associated with the occurrence of large-bodied and geographically small-ranging fishes within local coral reef communities. These species are 67% less likely to occur where human impact and temperature seasonality exceed critical thresholds, such as in the marine biodiversity hotspot: the Coral Triangle. Our results identify the most sensitive species and critical thresholds of human and climatic stressors, providing opportunity for targeted conservation intervention to prevent local extinctions.

Résumé : A Lagrangian approach based on a physical-biogeochemical modeling was used to compare the potential transfer of cadmium (Cd) from natural and anthropogenic sources to plankton communities (Cd-uptake) in the NorthWest African upwelling. In this region, coastal upwelling was estimated to be the main natural source of Cd while the most significant anthropogenic source for marine ecosystem is provided by phosphate industry. In our model experiment, Cd-uptake (natural or anthropogenic) in the North-West African upwelling is the result of an interplay between the Cd dispersion (by advection processes) and the simulated biological productivity. In the Moroccan waters, advection processes limit the residence time of water masses resulting in a low natural Cd-uptake by plankton communities while anthropogenic Cd-uptake is high. As expected, the situation is reversed in the Senegalo-Mauritanian upwelling where natural Cd-uptake is higher than anthropogenic Cd-uptake. Based upon an estimate of Cd sources, our modeling study shows, unexpectedly, that the anthropogenic signal of potential Cd-bioaccumulation in the Moroccan upwelling is of the same order of magnitude as the natural signal mainly present in the Senegalo-Mauritanian upwelling region. A comparison with observed Cd levels in mollusk and fishes, which shows overall agreement with our simulations, is confirming our estimates.
