Factors structuring the Ichthyofauna assemblage in a mangrove lagoon (Guadeloupe, French West Indies) Auteur(s) : Bouchereau, Jean-Luc De Tarso Chaves, Paulo Monti, Dominique Auteurs secondaires : Systématique, adaptation, évolution (SAE) ; Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Departamento de Zoologia ; Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) Dynamique des écosystèmes Caraïbe et biologie des espèces associées (DYNECAR EA 926) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Coastal Education and Research Foundation Résumé : International audience The ichthyofauna of the Manche-à-Eau mangrove lagoon was regularly sampled in 2002 with a fixed net at seven stations during 4 months corresponding to two hydrological seasons. Physicochemical variables (depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH) and population descriptors (species and family richness, density and biomass) were measured. The Whitefield and the well-being indexes were calculated to appreciate species equilibrium. Canonical correspondence analysis and generalized linear models were used to link species assemblages to physicochemical variables and to search for a special link with salinity. A total of 30,733 individuals belonging to 34 species and 23 families were collected. The Gerreidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Scianidae, and Sparidae represented almost 98% of the total number of individuals. Our results show that organization of the fish assemblages in the lagoon is poorly dependent on salinity, whereas dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH could have a stronger role. Looking at response curves to salinity change, most fishes species appeared to be visitors, either temporarily present or regular migrators. Only a few species compose the year-round resident population. They have a high patrimonial value and could be considered bioindicator species for long-term studies (e.g., of global change and natural or anthropogenic disturbances). The Euclidean distance and biomass variables were not useful descriptors of confinement and biological zonation in the lagoon, whereas the negative gradient of specific richness, number of individuals, Whitefield index, and index of well-being better described confinement. On the basis of these last parameters, biological zonation in the Manche-à- Eau lagoon was established and is provided. Effects of Long-Term Starvation on a Host Bivalve (Codakia orbicularis,Lucinidae) and Its Symbiont Population Auteur(s) : Caro, Audrey Got, Patrice Bouvy, Marc Troussellier, Marc Gros, Olivier Auteurs secondaires : Systématique, adaptation, évolution (SAE) ; Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) UMR-CNRS 5119 ; Université Montpellier 2 - Sciences et Techniques (UM2) UMR-CNRS 5119 ; Université Montpellier 2 - Sciences et Techniques (UM2) IRD-UMR 5119 ; Université Montpellier 2 - Sciences et Techniques (UM2) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD American Society for Microbiology Résumé : International audience The bivalve Codakia orbicularis, hosting sulfur-oxidizing gill endosymbionts, was starved (in artificial seawater filtered through a 0.22- m-pore-size membrane) for a long-term experiment (4 months). The effects of starvation were observed using transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence in situ hybridization and catalyzed reporter deposition (CARD-FISH), and flow cytometry to monitor the anatomical and physiological modifications in the gill organization of the host and in the symbiotic population housed in bacteriocytes. The abundance of the symbiotic population decreased through starvation, with a loss of one-third of the bacterial population each month, as shown by CARD-FISH. At the same time, flow cytometry revealed significant changes in the physiology of symbiotic cells, with a decrease in cell size and modifications to the nucleic acid content, while most of the symbionts maintained a high respiratory activity (measured using the 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride method). Progressively, the number of symbiont subpopulations was reduced, and the subsequent multigenomic state, characteristic of this symbiont in freshly collected clams, turned into one and five equivalent genome copies for the two remaining subpopulations after 3 months. Concomitant structural modifications appeared in the gill organization. Lysosymes became visible in the bacteriocytes, while large symbionts disappeared, and bacteriocytes were gradually replaced by granule cells throughout the entire lateral zone. Those data suggested that host survival under these starvation conditions was linked to symbiont digestion as the main nutritional source. Algae as sea resource have not been largely explored in Geography, yet it offers the potential for economic development. Macro-algae are cultivated for food purposes and they can substitute for fishing. Micro-algae can be valued as biomass: “nutraceutics”, Omega 3, biofuel. These various utilizations raise a question: are algae a key to a sustainable development in intertropical islands? We shall present Algaculture on a global scale, while emphasizing its low importance in the Caribbean. Then we shall show how algaculture can be part of a process of sustainable development by providing revenue to rural communities (Lesser Antilles). Finally, in a comparative approach (with the US), we shall see that the Caribbean Region has a number of assets for algaculture that make it suitable for sustainable projects and infrastructures: solar exposure, high temperatures, close to the US research centers. Mercury content in commercial pelagic fish and its risk assessment in the Western Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Kojadinovic, Jessica Potier, M Le Corre, M Cosson, R Bustamante, Paco Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : As top predators of pelagic food webs, large fish naturally bioaccumulate mercury (Hg). Determining Hg burdens in commercialized fish is essential considering the concern about effects of contaminants on human health and the legal thresholds that are therefore set for local consumption and/or exportation. Total Hg levels were measured in the muscular tissue of 183 fish of five commercially important species from the tropical zone of the Western Indian Ocean. All individuals were measured and sexed in order to study the impregnation of Hg with size and sex within each species. Values of Hg found in this part of the Indian Ocean were comparable to Hg in muscular tissue of the same species studied in other areas. The highest Hg levels were noted in Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) caught in waters surrounding Reunion Island (3.97 +/- 2.67 mu g g(-1) dry weight). Following the Swordfish, in decreasing order of Hg content, were the Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) and the Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), then the Common Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and the Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri). In the North of the Mozambique Channel, Swordfish had higher Hg levels than Yellowfin Tunas, and Dolphinfish exhibited intermediate Hg levels. The size of a fish was a determining factor of its Hg burden, as was the species. Differences in size-normalized Hg levels were observed between the two study zones for Swordfish and Common Dolphinfish. Sex, in contrast, did not influence Hg levels suggesting that females and males have similar feeding habits. The muscular Hg levels presented here suggest that consumers of fish originating from the Western Indian Ocean should limit themselves to one Swordfish based meal per week, or one fish meal a day if they choose to eat tuna or Common Dolphinfish. Fishers' perceptions as indicators of the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) Auteur(s) : Leleu, Kevin Alban, Frederique Pelletier, Dominique Charbonnel, Eric Letourneur, Yves Boudouresque, Charles F. Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : How users perceive the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is fundamental for the social acceptance of these zones. Moreover, their perceptions may be relevant for monitoring the effects of MPAs on extractive activities. This study analyzes artisanal fishers' perceptions of the performance of a north-western Mediterranean coastal MPA, which encompasses two no-take zones (NTZs). Three viewpoints have been considered: the effect on the personal activity of fishers, the effect on the local fishery and the effect on the ecosystem. In order to test the hypothesis that biomass export (spillover) - which had previously been evidenced from the two NTZs - may influence fishers' perceptions of NTZ effects, fishers' perceptions were compared with both declared and observed fishing activity over an one-year period. The results show that negative perceptions of NTZs are either nil or are negligible. Most fishers are aware of the beneficial effects of NTZs on ecosystems and fisheries. However, they remain to be convinced of the beneficial effects of the NTZs on their own activity. For instance, the proximity of a NTZ appears never to be involved in the choice of a fishing spot. This partial lack of correspondence between scientific expectation and fishers' perceptions is discussed in the light of fishing habits in the zone adjacent to NTZs, and takes into account fishing grounds, targeted species and seniority (defined as the number of years the fisher has been fishing within the MPA). All three factors appear to influence fishers' perceptions. For example, having a positive perception about a NTZ and spending more time fishing in the adjacent zone are habits that can be associated with fishers with less seniority. Fishers' perceptions obviously indicate the social acceptance of the MPA and are an essential monitoring tool for MPA managers. However, perceptions cannot be seen as a substitute for scientific monitoring, as both approaches are clearly complementary. Auteur(s) : Tessier, E Poisson, Francois Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : More than ten years after its launching, an evaluation of the results of the FADs programme carried on in Reunion Island has been made. Its implementation and its impact on artisanal fishery in Reunion Island have been analysed. This analysis demonstrates that, following a continuously ascending phase, the production of fish caught on fads has reached a plateau. Parallel to the FAD-associated fishery, the longline fishery has developed since 1991. This type of fishery includes production units whose operating zone is bordering the FAD installation area. Analysing the evolution of the small longliner sector is based on general activity indicators (number of ships, production, fish selling prices). Besides, a synthesis of the interactions between those two types of fisheries, whether in terms of exploited resources, space conflicts, fishing population or market, has been effected. Judging from the complementary and antagonistic natures of the two fisheries identified above and given their evolution, the future of the FADs programme is pending. Have the fads just been a step in the evolution of the Reunion fishing system or have they modified it on a long-term basis? Small scale fisheries in Europe: A comparative analysis based on a selection of case studies Auteur(s) : Guyader, Olivier Berthou, Patrick Koutsikopoulos, Constantin Alban, Frederique Demaneche, Sebastien Gaspar, M. B. Eschbaum, R. Fahy, E. Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Small-scale fisheries have traditionally received less research effort than large-scale fisheries and are generally under-studied in Europe. In spite of their comparatively low volume of catches and economic importance, small-scale fisheries are socially important and an integral part of the European coastal zone. Considering the high heterogeneity of situations and the paucity of quantitative data, we used an analytical methodology based on the comparative method. We carried out an analysis of small-scale fisheries (SSFs) in Europe based on a selection of nine case studies. Our objective was to obtain a comprehensive description of small-scale fleets covering different areas/fisheries/species, encompassing the diversity and specific conditions under which SSFs operate, in order to demonstrate the ecological and social sustainability of this often overlooked fisheries segment. A common approach formulated so that the case studies could be compared with the case histories of other competing users, required that for each set of criteria – technical, biological, socio-economic, and institutional – a set of relevant items and indicators was established. An analysis of characteristics common to the selected case studies is conducted and an attempt made to extend our comparisons to the whole of the European Union. Our results show that (as compared with large-scale fleets, their main competitor) small-scale fleets: (i) are composed of smaller vessels and, consequently, travel lower distances to fishing grounds, and are more reliant on coastal areas; (ii) have smaller crews (although the global employment figure is similar to that of large-scale fleets in Europe); (iii) use mostly, but not exclusively, passive gears; (iv) use multi-purpose fishing approaches, and can change the fish species they target during the year; (v) have lower extraction rates; (vi) have lower total capital investments (including fishing rights), turnover and costs; and (vii) have lower fuel consumption, making them less sensitive to changing oil prices. Dependence on subsidies is lower (viii). Involvement in fisheries management is variable, conservation and access regulation measures are largely local in origin. For the selected case studies, the most significant competitors are large-scale fleets, and recreational fisheries, but other sources of interaction (water quality, invasive species, etc.) cannot be ignored. Les pêcheries mixtes de langoustine et merlu du Golfe de Gascogne, modélisation bio-économique et simulation des procédures de gestion Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Résumé : Fishing crayfish on the gulf's mudflats is a traditional business practised by 450 boats of 12 to 18 metres in length and employs 2,500 sailors. In the north of the gulf, this activity is exclusive, in the south, immature hake are also caught, because the crayfish areas coincide, in part, with the nurseries of the northern stock of this species.
Management of these fisheries, called mixed, of crayfish and hake is one of the greatest problems of the Gulf of Gascony. All assessments tend to show the responsibility of the crayfish boats in the future of the hake stock. The solution is likely to pass through a generalised increase of the 80 mm meshing that would lead, eventually, the hake stock yield to its maximum, but would eliminate a great many trades that are only practicable for the moment by using small meshing: crayfish boats, shrimp boats, etc.
It was shown moreover that the times of maximum abundance of hake and crayfish do not necessarily coincide. Indeed, hake does not swim along the bottom but rather moves in the channel of water. There are therefore definitely crayfish areas and hake areas, but overlapping such that a ship passing from one to the other during a single pass cannot judge in advance the immediate composition of its catch.
The method used for describing these mixed fisheries and providing a solution to their problems of management relies on simulations aided by a bio-economic model known as "compartmental". This structure was adopted to be able to take into account all possible scenarios of the fleets' strategies. The fishery is first divided into geographic elements corresponding to the specific sedimentary structures where the stocks of exploited species are concentrated, the major constraint being the limits of these elements corresponding to those usually employed in fishing statistics, since it is based on these statistics that we can determine the fleets' profiles and their target species. The ratios between the fleet and the species are measured by calculating the fishing power.
A worldwide review of purse seine fisheries on FADs Auteur(s) : Fonteneau, Alain Pallares, P Pianet, Renaud Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This paper develops a comparative overview of the development of Fish Aggregating Devices (or fads) by the tropical purse seine fisheries in various ocean areas (Atlantic, Indian, Western and Eastern Pacific Oceans). First, a comparative review of fishery statistics is developed. Recent catches on fads by purse seiners can be estimated at a level of one million tons yearly. This comparison allows to describe the fishing zones and catch trends over time, the species composition and size taken in the various fad fisheries. Skipjack tuna is the dominant species in most fad fisheries, but significant amounts of yellowfin and bigeye are also frequently taken under fads. The paper also presents an overview of various observer data concerning the by-catches of the various fisheries using fads. This comparison allows to estimate the total worldwide yearly by-catches at about 100,000 t, and their species composition in each ocean. The fad technology used in the various oceans by purse seiners is described. The recent use of fads by purse seiners has introduced major uncertainties in most stock assessments, because analyses are hampered by changes in the fishing effort in a fad fishery, by changes in fishing zones and in sizes caught. As a last point, the management of fads presently done or in view by the various tuna bodies are introduced. It appears that the present massive use of fads worldwide is perhaps an unsafe fishing mode, which could produce serious overfishing of many stocks. There is then a consensus that the use of fads needs to be controlled and limited to sustainable biological levels. The creation of regional marine reserve of Prêcheur will lead to the implementation of fisheries management measures within the perimeter of the reserve. From a short-term perspective, fishers will see limitations of their fishing practices. But, from a longer-term perspective, they should gain substantial benefits from these restrictions; the increase of biomass due to the “reserve effect” should lead to increased volumes of catches in fishing areas. It should also lead to an enhancement of traditional practices such as line fishing, jig or “piscine” fishing, which have been abandoned for several years in spite of their lesser impact on marine ecosystems. Contribution et Dépendance des flottilles de pêche aux espèces commerciales majeures du Golfe de Gascogne Auteur(s) : Daures, Fabienne Planchot, Marie Demaneche, Sebastien Van Isenghem, Sylvie Berthou, Patrick Leblond, Emilie Jezequel, Michele Résumé : In order to provide economic indicators for fisheries, analysis of contribution and economic dependencies of the Bay of Biscay fishing fleets to major commercial species catching in the ICES VIII area is conducted. 9 species are considered (regarding the importance of their landings in this area): Sole, Norway Lobster, Sea bass, Hake, Anglerfish, Anchovy, Sardine, Cuttlefish and Monkfish. The landings data are provided by the Harmonie database of the Fisheries Information System of Ifremer and the analysis per specie is done for the 2005 year on one side and over the period 2000-2005 on the other side. A stock slip is built for each species and presents :
- Key figures on landings in the Bay of Biscay (total landings, average price, number of vessels concerned and share in the national landings)
- Assessment of the concentration of landings
- Assessment of the fleets' contribution to these total landings
- Assessment of the fleets' economic dependence to the species based on the income share depending on this species.
Since the early eighties, an important decrease in the number of fishermen practising this activity has been recorded. In the context of high exploitation of reef resources, the beach seine presents a low selectivity, catching too many juveniles of demersal fish. The fads established in coastal areas, have been successfully used in others regions of the world for exploiting small pelagics. Thus, it could allow to favour a change of exploitation style of these resources in Martinique. In partnership, Ifremer, the Regional Council and the Fishing Committee have began an evaluation of the potentialities for this type of structures around the island. To achieve this study, several experimental coastal fads have been established in different places. Surveys by subaquatic observations are periodically carried out to compare the attractive power of different aggregation devices (colour, shape, volume) and understand the factors influencing the determinism of the aggregation (biotic and abiotic). The results presented and discussed correspond to the initial stage of this study which should be pursued in the next months. Le stock de Lambi (Strombus gigas, L.) en Martinique : analyse de la situation 1986-1987, modélisation de l'exploitation, options d'aménagement Auteur(s) : Rathier, I Rathier, I Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The stock of Lambi, Strombus gigas (gastropod: strombidae), coastal benthic resource, has been exploited artisanally since the prehistoric period in Martinique. Nowadays, three lines of work exploit the species: free diving, nets (since the middle of the century) and scuba diving since 1985. This report presents the activity of each line of work, surveyed directly from 1986 to 1987: fishing zones and resource allocation, production, effort and performance, detail of catches (by length). The socio economic characteristics of the lambi fishermen are studied. The significant production of leisure fishing is also estimated. The decrease in the production and performance, as well as the lowering of the size of the first catch for about thirty years show that the stock is overexploited. The biological phenomenon of the stock: growth of the shell (length and shell lip), growth in weight, acquiring of sexual maturity, natural mortality are studied. The factors of mortality through fishing are estimated by class of length for the current exploitation regime by pseudo-cohort analysis. If the results confirm that the stock is overexploited, the level of overexploitation of the stock cannot be specified because of the presence of a number of lipped adults not yet too exploited in water deeper than 20 metres. The analysis of the dynamic process of the exploited population indicates two ways to the production of the stock: the forcing of the recruitment and the regulation of the exploitation regime. The lack of economic profitability of the production of juveniles over 30 mm and the difficulties raised by their collection in their natural habitat lead to the rationalization of the exploitation. The production and performance (by recruits) simulations performed for different exploitation regimens indicate that the only two conceivable options are the introduction of a minimum catch size, i.e. lambi with forming lip, and the regulation of the fishing effort. The socio-economic implications of the introduction of the determined management measures show that their applicability level is very low, because of the Martinique fishermen polyactivity, their low socio-economic level and mostly because of the free access to the resource. As a consequence, it is suggested to create new professional structures with a wide jurisdiction, in order to locally manage the marine areas, their use and their resources. A Review of Caribbean Ecosytems and Fishery Resources Using ECOPATH Models Auteur(s) : Smikle, S.G. Christensen, V. Aiken, K.A. Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : This paper provides a review of ecosystems modelling within the Caribbean using the Ecopath approach and software tools. The review is not intended to provide a direct comparison of the modelled ecosystems attributes and performance, as this would require having access to the models and the data sets used to build the models. Rather, a general comparison is made of the outputs of the models and the various authors’ descriptions of ecosystem attributes. Crustacés profonds capturés aux casiers aux Antilles Françaises Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Paulmier, Gerard Résumé : For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations earned out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks arc not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura, and to the orders Isopoda and Amphipoda. It is intended for fishermen and other socio-professionals of the fishing industry. It should enable them to identify and name these previously unexploited varieties of crustacea to facilitate their sale in local markets.
Évaluation des rejets sur la pêcherie de langoustine de Mer celtique Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Résumé : If Sea Bass fish farming (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) is currently experiencing an increase in Southern Europe, it is vital, in order to better reflect raising structures, to control its wastes. In order to do so, quantifying this species' wastes is essential to be able to present simple excretion ratios, easily useable by the farmer. Those ratios have been based on nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon masses established on intensive farming and 4 batches belonging to his stock (averaging 24, 5 to 362, 5 g). Each batch was followed up during the course of 1 month and fish farming in its entirety for 2 months. Mass assessments for nitrogen and phosphorus were level ((intrants = extrants) but never precise, contrary to what can be found in bibliography. The main wastes defined were linked to the biomasses found as well as the food quantity fed. Sea Bass carbon excretion could not be clearly defined. According to these follow ups, phosphorus would be the element better utilized by Sea Bass considering nutritional provision. Nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon quantities rejected through farming are very high since for nitrogen and carbon, 90% of the ingestion would be rejected in the environment. Hydraulic preferences of shrimps and fishes in tropical insular rivers Auteur(s) : Grandgirard, Virginie Monti, Dominique Valade, P. Lamouroux, N. Mallet, J.P. Grondin, H. Their application in a tropical insular environment is still limited as little is known about the hydraulic preferences of species. Hydraulic preference models have been developed for 15 taxa (diadromous shrimps and fishes) sampled in 52 rivers in the Caribbean (the French West Indies) and the Indian Ocean (the Reunion island). Five datasets were used and group 8353 samples collected by electrofishing during 320 surveys (reach date) performed between 1999 and 2011. Generalized additive models were used to link variations of taxa density within surveys to the hydraulic characteristics of the microhabitat (velocity, depth and substrate). Hydraulic preferences within each region (Caribbean and Indian Ocean) are significant for most of the taxa and vary little between rivers and surveys. The hydraulic variables explain up to 18.1% (univariate models) and 30.0% (multivariate models) of the deviance of densities within survey. Of the taxa selected, Atya scabra, Macrobrachium heterochirus, Xiphocaris elongata and the Sicydiinae are the most demanding. Le suivi de l'état des récifs coralliens de Polynésie Française et leur récente évolution Auteur(s) : Salvat, B Aubanel, A Adjeroud, M Bouisset, P Calmet, D Chancerelle, Y Cochennec, Nathalie Davies, N Éditeur(s) : Société Nationale de Protection de la Nature Résumé : Monitoring of French Polynesia coral reefs and their recent development.-French Polynesia, consisting of 118 islands in the centre of the Pacific Ocean, has more than 15 000 km(2) of reefs and lagoons managed by the local government. Tourism and pearl culture are the two main economic resources of the country. Polynesian coral reefs are extremely diverse and are among those for which we have thorough knowledge. The exploitation of local resources has been recorded for multiple decades and includes : coral materials, fishing, harvest and export of mother-of-pearl molluscs, pearl production, and ornamental fish. All over the country, many monitoring programmes have been launched to measure the health of reefs and the natural and anthropogenic perturbations that they suffer : hurricanes and seismic events, water quality, health of benthic and fish communities, pearl oyster pathology and radiobiology. These data, collected over the last few decades, allowed to define the relative importance of natural and anthropogenic degradation on reefs and lagoons, and to explain the present status of reefs at different spatial scales. Devastating hurricanes are rare (1903-1906, 1982-1983 and occasionally at other times), but they may annihilate outer slope coral communities on some islands. Bleaching events with considerable coral mortality at different geographical scales occurred mainly in 1991, 1994 and 2003. Outbreaks of Acanthaster destroyed numerous reefs (lagoons and outer slopes) from 1978-1982 and a new demographic wave began in 2006 at many Society islands. Eutrophication events only occurred occasionally and only in some lagoons. Whereas natural catastrophic events degrade the coral reef ecosystem across many islands, at the archipelago or even regional scale, anthropogenic degradation is limited to a few Society Islands, occurring rarely on atolls and not at all on those (one third) which are uninhabited. The main causes of reef degradation in some areas of Tahiti and Moorea include the embankment of fringing zones, coral mining, overfishing, absence of urban sewage treatment and the development of leisure and tourism activities. Because of its large geographical extent, one may conclude that major reef degradation in French Polynesia is caused by catastrophic natural events. On the other hand, anthropogenic degradation is more localized. Unfortunately, the synergistic effects of these causes of degradation prevent reefs from recovering. Optimum coral cover on French Polynesian outer reef slopes is between 50-60%. After a major destructive impact (hurricane, bleaching, Acanthaster) a reef is reduced to less than 10% coral cover, however if no more major disturbance events occur a reef will recover in about 12 years. Most of the 15 000 km(2) of reefs and lagoons in French Polynesia are in good health, and along with their neighbouring reefs in East and Central Pacific they are considered as the least degraded reefs worldwide and at a low risk of becoming degraded in the few next decades. However, we are more and more anxious about the future of reefs in the world particularly because present simulations predict that major impacts of climate change would include : elevation of sea surface temperatures, increase in the strength of hurricanes and acidification of seawater which will affect the formation of coral structures. The terrestrial ecosystems are facing an increasing urbanization, and the destruction and modification of their natural habitats by cultivation and forestry plantations, accidental or intentional fires, and particularly by the invasion of alien plant and animal species. Coastal areas and reef ecosystems are threatened by shoreline artificialization, sedimentation due to soil erosion, increasing uses of marine and lagoon resources and frequency of coral bleaching events. A significant erosion of terrestrial and marine biodiversity is observed on the island since the last decades. In the context of the Land Management Plan (PGA) and Marine Area Management Plan (PGEM) recently set up in the island by local authorities, scientific surveys and inventories were made in 2006 in order to assess the status of terrestrial biodiversity (vascular plants) and marine biodiversity (reef fishes) and compare areas with different anthropogenic pressures. Studies conducted on the flora and the vegetation at low and middle elevation along altitudinal transects show that the plant invasion process is related to climatic and topographic factors, and species autoecology. The marine study aims to compare the protected areas with control areas in order to test the effectiveness of protection measures and to propose a streamlined monitoring protocol. A methodological study in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems was conducted in order to propose biodiversity indicators which are crucial for decision making in conservation and sustainable development of island biodiversity. We used Geographic Information System (GIS) as a fast and intuitive tool for mapping indicators and their variability.
