According to the classical theories of power, asymmetrical relations generally favor the most powerful actor in terms of resources. However, the most powerful in terms of strength and resources part does not always win in negotiations. This depends on several factors, including negotiation tactics of the weaker party. Our thesis aims to analyze different type of negotiation strategies that weaker parties can use to obtain some benefit. To illustrate this point, we chose the example set by a number of developing countries (DV) to challenge the patenting of life contained in the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). Our goal was to understand the key strategies they have used to question this norm and rebalance it. To make this work, we used the concept of hegemony conceptualized by Gramsci and the concept of framework borrowed from the literature of social movements. This tool has allowed us to make the assumption that TRIPS is a hegemonic norm that mainly benefit to few developed countries and international companies. However, this domination is hidden by the norms thanks to universal and positive discourse which help to generate strong adhesion. Thus, in such a case, developing countries can’t expect to challenge this norm without a change of perception. It is therefore necessary that the rules perceived as fair and immutable are framed as unjust and mutable, so that countries decide to challenge it. We then tested this hypothesis through a content analysis of the DC’s official discourse at the World Trade Organization. This work has allowed us to observe that the framing is an important tool in the fight against the norm’s hegemony. Indeed, it offers the possibility to show that the patenting of life, far from presenting just a source of benefits, is also a source of problems that need solutions. The frame is also a good way to develop alternative normative propositions. However, we found that this strategy is insufficient to translate DC’s proposals into binding norms. In order to obtain changes in the agreement, building coalitions is particularly relevant for DC. Furthermore, we noted that DC which require regulatory changes when the structure of political opportunities is opened are more likely to obtain what they want. This thesis offers us a general picture of negotiations strategies and reveal that under certain conditions the weaker parties can get some gains in an asymmetrical negotiation. http://www.theses.fr/2013AGUY0642/document | Partager |
The aim of this work was to search for new bioactive compounds, displaying either antiplasmodial or antifungal activity. Two strategies were developed here: the evaluation of traditional remedies identified as antimalarial through ethnopharmacological studies, and the search for antifungal essential oils, the criterium being here a bioinspired approach. Our work led to the discovery that the antimalarial activity of Quassia amara L. (Simaroubaceae) fresh young leaves was due to the presence of a known quassinoid, simalikalactone D. In the case of Psidium acutangulum DC. (Myrtaceae), a flavonol glycosides mixture explained the activity observed for the decoction. The search for antifungal essential oils from the Amazonian flora led to the identification of several interesting species, thus validating our bioinspired strategy. The essential oil of Otacanthus azureus (Linden) Ronse was among the most active ones, either alone or in combination with azole drugs. Eventually, a metabolomic study of the GC/MS composition of these oils allowed us to develop a statistical tool which could help to select interesting antifungal products. This work thus demonstrates the major interest of the two strategies – ethnopharmacology and bioinspiration – for the search of new bioactive compounds. http://www.theses.fr/2011AGUY0415/document | Partager |
With an accumulated incidence rate of 56 cases per 100 000 inhabitants, Guadeloupe is the second French region most affected by HIV. Most of the publications on HIV/AIDS were essentially descriptive, stemming from annual reports. The Guadeloupean Hospital Database on HIV was scarcely exploited for research. The objective of this work was to estimate the fundamental aspects of HIV/AIDS in Guadeloupe. So late presentation for care, delay between HIV diagnosis and first specialised consultation, follow-up interruption, incidence of depression, opportunistic infections and deaths were studied as well as their predictive factors. We were able to highlight the following points: first, the very late HIV diagnosis (CD4< 200 / mm3) concerned 40, 12 % of HIV- infected adults followed in Guadeloupe. 36 % of patients had delays between HIV diagnosis and first specialised consultation. However, more than 22 % of patients were permanently lost to follow-up and never seen again. The first three classifying affections were oesophageal candidiasis, HIV-wasting syndrome and pneumocystosis. The causes of deaths reported in the literature were similar to those observed in our study. AIDS-related infections were the first cause of deaths. This thesis work thus tried to generate, in one of the most HIV-affected French regions, some indicators from the French Hospital Database on HIV. This database often did not contain all the desired informations, but the important number of observations allowed to have high power for the studied variables. These results, although often confirming the clinicians' empirical knowledge, may help understand some aspects of the HIV epidemic in Guadeloupe. http://www.theses.fr/2014AGUY0786/document | Partager |
Étude de la matte sulfo-oxydante de la mangrove de Guadeloupe : caractérisation des micro-organismes principaux des familles Beggiatoaceae et Oscillatoriaceae ; Study of the sulfo-oxidant mat from the mangrove swamp of Guadeloupe : Characterization of the main micro-organisms from the Beggiatoaceae and Oscillatoriaceae family Auteur(s) : Jean, R.N. Those structures are little studied in marine mangrove sediment and have never been described in West Indies. The purpose ofthis thesis is to characterize the interactions between the mat and the environment, and between the different filamentous micro-organisms living into the mat. In a first place, we characterized the mainly micro-organisrns of the mat by sequencing 16S rDNA. We confirmed these sequences by molecular hybridization (FISH) with specific probes designed from sequences obtained. Thus, it was possible to describe two new Beggiatoaceae strains, whose structure has been studied by electronic microscopy. Furthemore, we used potentiometric captors in situ and in laboratory, by creating a mesocosm, in order to define the chemical environment where involved these bacteria. These experiences proved that the Beggiatoaceae of the mat oxidized the sulfur taking the oxygen from the medium, while the microscopic analysis coupled with EDX showed intracellular sulfur granules into the bacteria. The study of the filamentous cyanobacteria of the mat highlighted four new cyanobacteria strains, all studied by electronic rmcroscopy. Two of them belongs to Planktothrlcoides genus and showed positive toxicity on Artemia salina. The others species are close to Oscillatorla spongeliae, a sponge symbiont, nevertheless, one ofthem showed an intemal morphology close to Tychonema. The analysis of the different results adduces sorne knowledge about mangrove microbial communities. Furthermore, this study can be used as an interesting base to study the micro-organisms contribution in functioning mangrove ecosystem http://www.theses.fr/2013AGUY0614/document | Partager |
Our work presented herein aimed to describe the epidemiological, etiological and therapeutic features of the stroke pathology in the Martinican Afro-Caribbean population. In 1998, the first population-based epidemiological study, ERMANCIA I, showed a 40% greater firstever stroke incidence in Martinique compared to those observed in continental France, with a high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes. These results contributed to the creation, in 2003, of the first stroke unit in the Caribbean area. In the 5_year follow-up study, we found that half of the patients had died and that 50% of survivors were affected from vascular dementia (twice compared with continental French cohorts): this figure was probably favored by severe underlying cerebral microangiopathy that amplified the cognitive impact of stroke. We also identified a failure in the secondary prevention in Martinique, certified by nearly 80% of hypertensive patients still insufficiently controlled. As a result, in 2006, we developed a well-structured stroke prevention network. The efficiency of this network was attested by the high rate of good blood pressure control (74% vs. 39%, p=0.01) and the reduced vascular morbidity and mortality rate (8.3% vs. 24%, p <0.001) after a 30-month period of activity, in comparison with control “historic” patients. In 2012, ERMANCIA II study revealed a 30% reduction of first-ever stroke incidence and a reduced mortality rate at 1 month for patients ≤55 years (8% vs. 20%, p = 0.03), compared to these observed in ERMANCIA I, likely due to improvement of primary stroke prevention and the best stroke unit management at the acute phase, respectively. Based on our etiological data, we underline: 1) the relatively high frequency of symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis, for which we propose a new definition; 2) the clinic-radiological features of stroke in the anterior choroidal artery; 3) the atypical picture of “malignant” multilacunar syndrome. On the other hand, stroke due to sickle cell disease or “trigonocephale” snakebite were only anecdotal. However, we found that carotid-bulb atypical fibromuscular dysplasia (CAFD), a very unusual previously described cause of stroke, could be responsible for up to the third of carotidterritory stroke of so-called undetermined etiology among patients ≤55 years. In addition, the relatively high rate of recurrence under antiplatelet (28% at 14 months), was dramatically reduced by endarterectomy in patients with CAFD. From a therapeutic point of view, our results showed an excess rate of post-thrombolysis symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhages in older patients, a figure probably linked to the severe underlying hypertension-triggered cerebral microangiopathy. Owing to the lack of neurointerventionnal option in Martinique, we tested a new therapeutic strategy in patients with a proximal arterial occlusion not responsive to standard IV thrombolysis, consisting in an additional administration of IV tenecteplase, 0.1mg/kg. Our preliminary results were promising, leading us to plan a randomized study. Finally, most of the characteristics of stroke in this Afro-Caribbean population are probably shared by the majority of black people. Thus, our results could have a universal impact in the understanding of stroke burden in blacks. http://www.theses.fr/2015AGUY0909/document | Partager |

Introduction: Aim of the study is to describe épidemiology, phenotype and treatment of demyelinating inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) namely multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in French West Indies.Epidemiology: MS emerged in the French West Indian (FWI) population with an incidence of 1.27/100 000 (CI 95%: 1.16-1.38) for the period 1992-2007 while incidence of NMO remained stable at 0.19/100,000 (CI 95%: 0.15–0.23). Both migration in Metropolitean France (MF) and decrease of sun exposure were risk factors for MS acquisition in FWI. Phenotype and treatment of NMO: NMO is a very rapidly disabling disease with median times to reach DSS 3, 6 and 8 of one year, 8 years and 22 years respectively. However, treatment by plasma exchanges were shown to reduce sequellae of NMO attacks ; mitoxantrone and rituximab reduced significantly annualized relapse rate (ARR) from 1.7 to 0.29 (p<10-4) and from 1,34 to 0,56 (p=0.0005) respectively, improving dramatically natural course of NMO.Phenotype and treatment of MS: Absence of Migration in MF in MS patients was found to be the strongest independent predictive factor of disability progression to DSS 6 (hazard ratio, 2.59; p=0.0002); beside short time to DSS3 (p=0.005), later age at onset (p=0.005), and multi-symptomatic onset (p=0.03). Treatment of MS by interferon beta-1 had a moderate impact in MS while natalizimab proved to be highly effective by reducing drastically ARR and inflammatory parameters on magnetic resonance imaging. Conclusion: Spectrum of demyelinating inflammatory disorders of CNS has reversed in French West Indies with overrepresentation of MS. Agressive therapy is needed to improve prognosis of NMO. Rapidly increasing of its incidence makes MS a new public health problem in French West Indies. http://www.theses.fr/2012AGUY0511/document | Partager |
In Guadeloupe, the prevalence of diabetes is two times higher than in Metropolitan France, with a female predominance. Apart from environmental factors, vitamin D and polymorphisms of genes involved in vitamin D metabolism would be associated with increased risk of metabolic diseases. Androgens are also associated with abnormal glucose metabolism, directly or through the Sex Hormone Binding Protein (SHBG). Our main hypotheses were: 11 Vitamin D status and polymorphisms of genes involved in its metabolism may be associated with metabolic pammeters in Afro-Caribbean (AC). They could explain the importance of cardiometabolic diseases in Guadeloupe. 2/ SHBG may be associated with abnormal glucose metabolism, independently of sex steroids. In 325 surveys, 518 visuai observations and acoustic 202 have identified four families, 14 genera and 17 species, representing a cumulative total ofnearly 6000 cetaceans assessed within 15 miles of coastal water ofGuadeloupe. Dolphins (Delphinidae), constitute 33% ofthe 36 species currently known in the world. Six rare species have been described. Among the baleen whales, the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate into coastal waters from December to late May and is the species most encountered. With individual monitoring by telemetry, it has been proved that at least one individual ofthis species could stay in the archipelago over eight days. In 2010, a humpback whale in the Bay ofmold were followed for more than 6300 km to the south ofIceland to the Faroe Islands. A first estimate ofstock over the period 2008 to 20 Il suggests that 442 humpback whales CV% 19.2995% [302-645] would evolve in the coastal archipelago. <..';:-.'") Comparison of spaceborne measurements of sea surface salinity and colored detrital matter in the Amazon plume Auteur(s) : Fournier, Severine Chapron, Bertrand Salisbury, J. Vandemark, Douglas Reul, Nicolas Éditeur(s) : Amer Geophysical Union Résumé : Large rivers are key hydrologic components in oceanography, particularly regarding air-sea and land-sea exchanges and biogeochemistry. We enter now in a new era of Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) observing system from Space with the recent launches of the ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and the NASA Aquarius/Sac-D missions. With these new sensors, we are now in an excellent position to revisit SSS and ocean color investigations in the tropical northwest Atlantic using multi-year remote sensing time series and concurrent in situ observations. The Amazon is the world's largest river in terms of discharge. In its plume, SSS and upper water column optical properties such as the absorption coefficient of colored detrital matter (acdm) are strongly negatively correlated (<-0.7). Local quasi-linear relationships between SSS and acdm are derived for these plume waters over the period of 2010-2013 using new spaceborne SSS and ocean color measurements. Results allow unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of this coupling. These relationships are then used to estimate SSS in the Amazon plume based on ocean color satellite data. This new product is validated against SMOS and in situ data and compared with previously developed SSS retrieval models. We demonstrate the potential to estimate tropical Atlantic SSS for the extended period from 1998 to 2010, prior to spaceborne SSS data collection. Auteur(s) : Fouquet, Yves Auzende, Jean-marie Ballu, V Batiza, R Bideau, Daniel Cormier, Mh Geistdoerfer, P Lagabrielle, Yves Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-villars Résumé : 69 new hydrothermal sites were discovered during the Naudur diving cruise. Dives were conducted between 17 degrees 5 and 18 degrees 40'5 on four segments showing marked contrast in morphology, volcanic, tectonic and hydrothermal activity. At 17 degrees 10'5, 17 degrees 25'5 and 18 degrees 37'5 the ridge has a dome shaped cross-section and is dominated by very active volcanic activity. Early widespread low temperature (<50 degrees C) diffuse hydrothermal discharge is followed by focused high temperature black smokers. At 18 degrees 15'S tectonic activity is dominant, no recent lava was observed, and only two of the 20 hydrothermal sites are active. At 18 degrees 32'5 recent lava representing a new volcanic episode partly covers the bottom of the graben. Deep hydrothermal convection is reactivated with new black smokers along the graben wall. Also, there is low temperature shimmering water from cooling lava flows. These three segments can be considered as successive volcanic/tectonic episodes typical of a fast spreading ridge. Further, the observations support a new model for the temporal evolution of episodic hydrothermal activity. Hydrothermal convection is unstable and superficial during the volcanic stage (dykes injection). At the beginning of the teaonic stage (graben formation) faults allow deep circulation and hot fluid to reach the surface. As the graben widens hydrothermal activity is less important and may cease. The heat of a new volcanic episode reactivates the deep hot water circulation along the graben faults completing a cycle. Nd isotope constraints on ocean circulation, paleoclimate, and continental drainage during the Jurassic breakup of Pangea Auteur(s) : Dera, Guillaume Prunier, Jonathan Smith, Paul L. Haggart, James W. Popov, Evgeny Guzhov, Alexander Rogov, Mikhail Delsate, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The breakup of Pangea and onset of growth of the Pacific plate led to several paleoenvironmental feedbacks, which radically affected paleoclimate and ocean chemistry during the Jurassic. Overall, this period was characterized by intense volcanic degassing from large igneous provinces and circum-Panthalassan arcs, new oceanic circulation patterns, and changes in heat and humidity transports affecting continental weathering. Few studies, however, have attempted to unravel the global interactions linking these processes over the long-term. In this paper, we address this question by documenting the global changes in continental drainage and surface oceanic circulation for the whole Jurassic period. For this purpose, we present 53 new neodymium isotope values (εNd(t)) measured on well-dated fossil fish teeth, ichthyosaur bones, phosphatized nodules, phosphatized ooids, and clastic sediments from Europe, western Russia, and North America. Combined with an extensive compilation of published εNd(t) data, our results show that the continental sources of Nd were very heterogeneous across the world. Volcanic inputs from a Jurassic equivalent of the modern Pacific Ring of Fire contributed to radiogenic εNd(t) values (− 4 ε-units) in the Panthalassa Ocean. For the Tethyan Ocean, the average surface seawater signal was less radiogenic in the equatorial region (− 6.3), and gradually lower toward the epicontinental peri-Tethyan (− 7.4), western Russian (− 7.4) and Euro-Boreal seas (− 8.6). Different Nd sources contributed to this disparity, with radiogenic Nd influxes from westward Panthalassan currents or juvenile volcanic arcs in open oceanic domains, and substantial unradiogenic inputs from old Laurasian and Gondwanan shields for the NW Tethyan platforms. Overall, the εNd(t) values of Euro-Boreal, peri-Tethyan, and western Russian waters varied quite similarly through time, in response to regional changes in oceanic circulation, paleoclimate, continental drainage, and volcanism. Three positive shifts in εNd(t) values occurred successively in these epicontinental seas during the Pliensbachian, in the Aalenian-Bathonian interval, and in the mid-Oxfordian. The first and third events are interpreted as regional incursions of warm surface radiogenic currents from low latitudes. The Aalenian-Bathonian shift seems linked to volcanic outbursts in the NW Tethys and/or circulation of deep currents resulting from extensional events in the Hispanic Corridor and reduced influences of boreal currents crossing the Viking Corridor. In contrast, the εNd(t) signals decreased and remained very low (< − 8) during the global warming events of the Toarcian and Late Oxfordian - Early Tithonian intervals. In these greenhouse contexts, a latitudinal expansion of humid belts could have extended the drainage pathways toward boreal Nd sources of Precambrian age and increased the supply of very unradiogenic crustal-derived inputs to seawater. Finally, a brief negative εNd(t) excursion recorded in parallel with regional drops in seawater temperature suggests that southward circulation of cold unradiogenic Arctic waters occurred in the NW Tethys in the Callovian - Early Oxfordian. All these results show that changes in surface oceanic circulation resulting from the Pangean breakup could have regionally impacted the evolution of seawater temperatures in the NW Tethys. Effect of an herbivorous diet on energy balance of Litopenaeus vannamei at selected ontogenetic stages Auteur(s) : Maldonado, Carlos Cuzon, Gerard Guzman, Emilio Brito, Roberto Soto, Luis Arena, Leticia Gaxiola, Gabriela Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Herbivorous (20% vegetable protein, 40% carbohydrate) and carnivorous diets (40% marine animal protein, 20% carbohydrate) were experimentally tested to assess their effect on the energy balance and energetic substrates utilized by postlarvae (PL's /15 days) and juvenile shrimp (3-6 g) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Postlarval stage 60 (PL60, early juveniles) shrimps fed HeD and CaD diets, then late juveniles (3-6 g) acclimated to the same diets were tested for their respective energy partitioning potential. No significant differences (p>0.05) on growth were obtained in early juveniles (mean final wet weight of 0.19 g). However in late juvenile stages a significant difference (p<0.05) in growth rate was observed. In terms of energy partitioning, both early and late juveniles seem to spend more energy in respiratory metabolism than in the elimination of excretion products. A change in feed composition based on quality protein sources induced some modifications on shrimp's activity measured by heat increment. Shrimps fed with an herbivorous diet showed a higher heat increment. Interestingly, the early stages of L vannamei display a remarkable capacity to assimilate a plant protein-based and a high carbohydrate level diet. Such capacity with a stimulation of genes would lead to a good adaptation of juveniles receiving all-plant diets to sustain growth performances up to a marketable size. The implications of these findings for the shrimp farming feeding costs are briefly discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. On the influence of dissolved organic-matter on remote-sensing of chlorophyll in the straits of skagerrak and kattegat Auteur(s) : Karabashev, Gs Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : An experimental techniques to estimate the influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on remote sensing of chlorophyll in water has been developed, based on the relationship between fluorescence and absorption of light by a substance. The profiles of fluorescence, chlorophyll content in sea water and estimates of light attenuation in water samples were used in the paper. These data have permitted to calculate the regressions linking fluorescence and light absorption at 450 nm by chlorophyll (ABC450) and by DOM (ABD450). The remote sensing needs no correction for DOM if M450 = 100* (ABC450/ABD450) much greater than 100. This technique has been applied to data collected during the international Skagex field experiment in the straits of Skagerrak and Kattegat in spring and autumn of 1990. It was found that M450 <= 100 everywhere in the subsurface layer. Unfavorable conditions for remote sensing of chlorophyll prevailed in the straits because of the uptake of DOM-rich water from the continent and the accumulation of phytoplankton in deeper layers. These and another processes can increase relative content of colored DOM even in waters of open ocean. On the variability of yellow substance in the skagerrak and the kattegat Auteur(s) : Karabashev, Gs Khanaev, Sa Kuleshov, Af Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The variability of ''yellow substance'' in waters of the Skagerrak and the Kattegat was studied during the international Skagex programme in 1990 and 1991. Data on attenuation of light and fluorescence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sea water were collected with a spectral transmissiometer and a submersible fluorometer within a depth range of 0-250 m at several stations. More than fifty-fold variations of fluorescence intensity over space and time were due to the combined action of different sources of DOM in the straits. The surface maximum of fluorescing DOM, related to river outflow, was spreading from Oslo fjord to the central Skagerrak in late spring. This maximum may be ecologically important because it diminishes shortwave PAR. In the autumn the brightest DOM fluorescence was found in the Kattegat and along the Norwegian coast in accordance with earlier studies. The local minima of DOM fluorescence are associated with the Jutland current. Both the instability of the current and a ten-fold difference in DOM content between deep layers of the Skagerrak and Kattegat resulted in strong synoptic variability of fluorescence in the transitional area between the straits. Seasonal and synoptic variabilities of ''yellow substance'' were minimal in the southern Kattegat. The vertical gradients of DOM fluorescence were mostly negative at the depth of the thermocline of the open Skagerrak in spring, reaching values of 40-50 % m-1. Fine structure and complex shape were inherent to fluorescence profiles from areas of intensive water mixing. DOM fluorescence closely covaried with attenuation of UV light: the correlation coefficient was + 0.9 for wavelength w <= 350 nm regardless of season. The inverse dependence between wavelength derivative and magnitude of UV attenuation in the straits did not change with season. DOM fluorescence and water salinity were negatively correlated at depths of 25-50 m but they varied independently in the upper 10 m. No significant correlation between fluorescence and nitrates has been found. Estimates of correlation with phosphates ranged from 0.7 to 0.8. In general, the changes of fluorescence were due to variations of DOM content in sea water but not to variability of DOM composition or state. The properties of DOM fluorescence in the Skagerrak-Kattegat area make it a useful natural tracer of water movements suitable for active remote sensing with airborne lidar. Phosphorus forms related to sediment grain size and geochemical characteristics in French coastal areas Auteur(s) : Andrieux-loyer, Françoise Aminot, Alain Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Phosphorus forms with respect to sediment characteristics, such as grain-size, and major chemical elements, were studied in French coastal marine areas (the Bay of Seine and the Loire and Gironde Estuaries). In the three areas, Fe/Al-bound phosphate (Fe/Al-P) and exchangeable phosphate (exch-P) were significantly related to the proportion of fine fraction (< 63 mum). The special association of these forms with fine particles, as well as the relationships between exch-P, Fe/Al-P and Fe showed that adsorption processes on Fe oxides had taken place. However, for similar Fe concentrations, Bay of Seine sediments showed Fe/Al-P concentrations which were four to five times higher than those found in the Loire and Gironde Estuaries. This was attributed to differences in sediment nature and processes in these two types of areas. Indeed, the Loire and Gironde Estuaries frequently show hypoxia.Calcium-bound phosphate (Ca-P) was found in all grain size classes with comparable concentrations in the Bay of Seine where there was no correlation between Ca-P and Ca. This corresponded to the calcium's marine origin (shells) in the Bay of Seine. In contrast, the correlation of Ca-P with Ca and the fine fraction of the sediment in the Loire and Gironde Estuaries was characteristic of the predominant metamorphic origin of Ca-P in these areas.Useful information for interpretation of P-forms can be obtained from major sediment characteristics. Thus, for areas where specific relationships have previously been established good estimates of P-forms could be predicted from sediment properties. Probiotic effect of FLOC on Vibrios in the pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus Vannamei Auteur(s) : Aguilera-rivera, Diana Prieto-davo, Alejandra Escalante, Karla Chavez, Cristina Cuzon, Gerard Gaxiola, Gabriela Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The advantages of FLOC over clear water (CW) in rearing juvenile L. vannamei and its effects on Vibrio communities were evaluated. Survival rate in FLOC and clear water were recorded and a probiotic was tested under both conditions. Daily growth rate (DGR) was higher in FLOC (p < 0.05) than in CW. Survival in each system increased significantly when a probiotic was included in the diet (p < 0.05). The Vibrionaceae community from the hepatopancreas (HP) and the culture medium did not differ between the two culture media. Nevertheless, a novel group of Vibrio strains was found to be unique to FLOC. No high level of lesions was observed in shrimp tissues from the FLOC + probiotic treatment; it suggests that the probiotic contributed to homeostasis and prevented outbreak of opportunistic pathogenic species. Probiotic P-acidilactici application in shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris culture subject to vibriosis in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Castex, Mathieu Chim, Liet Pham, Dominique Lemaire, Pierrette Wabete, Nelly Nicolas, Jean-louis Schmidely, P Mariojouls, C Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : We studied the effects of a lactic acid bacterium, Pediococcus acidilactici (strain MA 18/5M, CNCM), as a dietary probiotic on growth performance and some nutritional and microbiological aspects of the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Experimental shrimp culture was carried out over 10 weeks, using floating cages of 14 m(2) each set in earthen ponds, in a New Caledonia farm affected by "Summer syndrome", a septicaemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo. The experiment design testing probiotic-coated pellets against control was replicated in two earthen ponds. High mortalities, characteristic of Summer syndrome, were observed during the first 2 weeks of the trial. The probiotic improved production in the treated cages from both ponds with increases in the survival rate (7% and 15% respectively) and final biomass (8% and 12% respectively). No differences were recorded among treatments on growth performances, but significant lower food conversion ratios were obtained with probiotic treatment. After 5 weeks of rearing, the Hepatosomatic Index and the adjusted dry weight of the digestive gland were significantly increased by 10% and by 9% respectively in shrimps treated with probiotic. In the meantime, the specific activities of alpha amylase and trypsin in the digestive gland showed a significant effect of the probiotic treatment with respective increases by 35% and 55%. The rise in total trypsin activity following morning feeding was also enhanced by the probiotic treatment (P < 0.001). The highest concentration of probiotic (between 10(4)-10(5) CFU g(-1) of fresh gut) in the shrimp gut was obtained 2 h after feeding. The concentration remained high for 4 h after feeding before decreasing until the next meal. Total bacterial counts on Marine agar and TCBS in the gut were significantly lowered by the probiotic treatment over the 10 weeks of the experiment. Additionally, during the first 2 weeks, prevalence and load of V nigripulchritudo strains in haemolymph was lower in animals fed with the probiotic diet. This study demonstrated, under pond conditions, that feeding shrimp with live terrestrial lactic acid bacteria can be an effective treatment for improving shrimp culture affected by vibriosis. Physical and remineralization processes govern the cobalt distribution in the deep western Atlantic Ocean Auteur(s) : Dulaquais, Gabriel Boye, Marie Rijkenberg, M. J. A. Carton, Xavier Éditeur(s) : Copernicus Gesellschaft Mbh Résumé : The distributions of the bio-essential trace element dissolved cobalt (DCo) and the apparent particulate Co (PCo) are presented along the GEOTRACES-A02 deep section from 64(o) N to 50(o) S in the western Atlantic Ocean (longest section of international GEOTRACES marine environment program). PCo was determined as the difference between total cobalt (TCo, unfiltered samples) and DCo. DCo concentrations ranged from 14.7 pM to 94.3 pM, and PCo concentrations from undetectable values to 18.8 pM. The lowest DCo concentrations were observed in the subtropical domains, and the highest in the low-oxygenated Atlantic Central Waters (ACW), which appears to be the major reservoir of DCo in the western Atlantic. In the Antarctic Bottom Waters, the enrichment in DCo with aging of the water mass can be related to suspension and redissolution of bottom sediments a well as diffusion of DCo from abyssal sediments. Mixing and dilution of deep water masses, rather than scavenging of DCo onto settling particles, generated the meridional decrease of DCo along the southward large-scale circulation in the deep western Atlantic. Furthermore, the apparent scavenged profile of DCo observed in the deep waters likely resulted from the persistence of relatively high concentrations in intermediate waters and low DCo concentrations in underlaying bottom waters. We suggest that the 2010 Icelandic volcanic eruption could have been a source of DCo that could have been transported into the core of the Northeast Atlantic Deep Waters. At intermediate depths, the high concentrations of DCo recorded in the ACW linearly correlated with the apparent utilization of oxygen (AOU), indicating that remineralization of DCo could be significant (representing up to 37% of the DCo present). Furthermore, the preferential remineralization of phosphate (P) compared to Co in these low-oxygenated waters suggests a decoupling between the deep cycles of P and Co. The vertical diffusion of DCo from the ACW appears to be a significant source of DCo into the surface waters of the equatorial domain. Summarizing, the dilution due to mixing processes rather than scavenging of DCo and the above-mentioned remineralization could be the two major pathways controlling the cycling of DCo into the intermediate and deep western Atlantic.
