A cost-benefit analysis of improving trawl selectivity in the case of discards: The Nephrops norvegicus fishery in the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Macher, Claire Guyader, Olivier Talidec, Catherine Bertignac, Michel Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The Nephrops trawl fishery is one of the most important fisheries in the Bay of Biscay. The fishery management essentially relies on conservation measures, a total at I owed catch (TAC) for Nephrops together with a mini mum landing size (MLS) and minimum trawl mesh size (70 mm stretched mesh). These measures have failed to prevent high discard levels of many species that characterize the fishery. Nephrops trawlers thus discard about half of their Nephrops catches in numbers (a third in weight) of which only 30% survive. Nephrops discards mainly occur in younger Nephrops age groups below the MLS. This is a waste for the already overexploited Nephrops stock as well as for the fleet. Based on a bio-economic simulation model, the paper analyses the consequences of several scenarios of improving Nephrops selectivity. The potential impacts of these scenarios on Nephrops biomass, landings, discards and economic indicators (e.g. rent) are examined and a cost-benefit analysis of each scenario is carried out. We show that a better exploitation pattern would benefit fisheries that have high level of discards. Reducing non-commercial Nephrops discards leads to positive net present values of rent with better value realized from the production potential and limited short-term losses for the fishing units. By taking account of the economic dynamics of increasing effort however, we show that selectivity measures are insufficient. Regulating access to the fishery is also required to ensure the sustainability of the fishery and a better exploitation of the production potential. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Various PKC-independent effects of Ro 31-8220 have however been demonstrated, including inhibition of the ATP-binding cassette drug transporter breast cancer resistance protein. In the present study, we reported that the BIM also blocks activity of the solute carrier organic cation transporter (OCT) 1, involved in uptake of marketed drugs in the liver, in a PKC-independent manner. Ro 31-8220, in contrast to other pan-PKC inhibitors such as staurosporine and chelerythrine, was thus shown to cis-inhibit uptake of the reference OCT1 substrate tetraethylammonium in OCT1-transfected HEK293 cells in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50 = 0.18 μM) and without altering membrane expression of OCT1. This blockage of OCT1 was also observed in human hepatic HepaRG cells that constitutionally express OCT1. It likely occurred through a mixed mechanism of inhibition. Ro 31-8220 additionally trans-inhibited TEA uptake in OCT1-transfected HEK293 cells, which likely discards a transport of Ro 31-8220 by OCT1. Besides Ro 31-8220, 7 additional BIMs, including the PKC inhibitor LY 333531, inhibited OCT1 activity, whereas 4 other BIMs were without effect. In silico analysis of structure-activity relationships next revealed that various molecular descriptors, especially 3D-WHIM descriptors related to total size, correspond to key physico-chemical parameters for inhibition of OCT1 activity by BIMs. In addition to activity of OCT1, Ro 31-8220 inhibited those of other organic cation transporters such as multidrug and toxin extrusion protein (MATE) 1 and MATE2-K, whereas, by contrast, it stimulated that of OCT2. Taken together, these data extend the nature of cellular off-targets of the BIM Ro 31-8220 to OCT1 and other organic cation transporters, which has likely to be kept in mind when using Ro 31-8220 and other BIMs as PKC inhibitors in experimental or clinical studies ISSN: 1932-6203 hal-01255837 https://hal-univ-rennes1.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01255837 DOI : 10.1371/journal.pone.0144667 PUBMED : 26657401 PUBMEDCENTRAL : PMC4675551 | Partager |

It can yield valuable information to infer the interactions and functions of proteins. Fused genes have been identified as non-transitive patterns of similarity in triplets of genes. To be computationally tractable, this approach usually imposes an a priori distinction between a dataset in which fused genes are searched for, and a dataset that may have provided genetic material for fusion. This reduces the `genetic space' in which fusion can be discovered, as only a subset of triplets of genes is investigated. Moreover, this approach may have a high-false-positive rate, and it does not identify gene families descending from a common fusion event. Results: We represent similarities between sequences as a network. This leads to an efficient formulation of previous methods of fused gene identification, which we implemented in the Python program FusedTriplets. Furthermore, we propose a new characterization of families of fused genes, as clique minimal separators of the sequence similarity network. This well-studied graph topology provides a robust and fast method of detection, well suited for automatic analyses of big datasets. We implemented this method in the C++ program MosaicFinder, which additionally uses local alignments to discard false-positive candidates and indicates potential fusion points. The grouping into families will help distinguish sequencing or prediction errors from real biological fusions, and it will yield additional insight into the function and history of fused genes. Characterization and origin of alcaline magmas and fluids beneath the Jbel Saghro volcanic field, Anti Atlas, Morocco ; Caractérisation et origine des magmas alcalins et des fluides sous le massif volcanique du Jbel Saghro, Anti Atlas, Maroc Auteur(s) : Chamboredon, René Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Université Montpellier Fleurice Parat Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Volatile-rich, silica-undersaturated alkaline lavas record the important role of fluids during fluid-rock and magma-rock interactions in the mantle, which are key processes to understand the dynamics of the convective mantle and lithosphere-asthenosphere interactions in intracontinental settings. The aim of this thesis is to bring new constraints on the genesis of alkaline magmas by characterizing the crystallization conditions, the source and the partial melting processes taking part in the genesis of olivine nephelinites, pyroxene nephelinites and basanites from the Jbel Saghro volcanic field in the Moroccan Anti Atlas. The petrological and geochemical study of rocks and minerals coupled with the analysis of fluid inclusions constrains the pre-eruptive conditions of Saghro nephelinites to 1.7–2.2 GPa and ~1350 °C. Minerals show that nephelinitic magmas are rich in volatile elements (Cl, F, S), and fluid inclusions indicate that magmas were saturated with a CO2-rich fluid at pressures > 590 MPa. The various mineralogical assemblages and the presence of peridotite xenoliths suggest a rapid ascent for olivine nephelinites and more complex processes at depth for pyroxene nephelinites.Fractional crystallization and partial melting modelling of Saghro mafic lavas indicate that they are low-degree melts (0.6–2.5 %) of an amphibole-bearing carbonated peridotite enriched in incompatible elements, at the garnet-spinel transition (~80–85 km). Saghro nephelinites display a temporal evolution with a slight increase of the degree of melting and a decrease of the amount of residual amphibole from the oldest (olivine nephelinites, 9.6 Ma) to the most recent (pyroxene nephelinites, 2.9 Ma). Basanites form a system that is independent from nephelinites and are slightly higher-degree melts. Important variations in their chemical composition suggest variable amounts of fractional crystallization during ascent. The peculiar characteristics of Saghro nephelinites and basanites (enrichment in incompatible elements, negative anomalies in K, Zr, Hf and Ti, high Ca/Al and Zr/Hf ratios) indicate that their source was affected by carbonatitic metasomatism. The influence of this metasomatism is stronger for pyroxene nephelinites than for olivine nephelinites. These results suggest fluid-rock interactions beneath the Northwest African Craton, leading to the formation of a metasomatized mantle by CO2-rich carbonatitic components at the lithosphere-asthenosphere transition. The origin of the metasomatism inducing source enrichment and the formation of amphibole veins could be attributed to the melting of relict subducted oceanic lithosphere. The relatively low melting temperatures (< 1350 °C) suggest the absence of a thermal anomaly beneath the Jbel Saghro, and thus support a lithosphere delamination model as precursor of Saghro volca0,3nism. However, the increasing degree of partial melting over time, also observed in the Middle Atlas, together with the isotopic and geochemical similarities with Canary Islands alkaline lavas does not allow us to discard the influence of a deviation of the Canary mantle plume beneath northwest Africa.
Fishery externalities and biodiversity: Trade-offs between the viability of shrimp trawling and the conservation of Frigatebirds in French Guiana Auteur(s) : Martinet, Vincent Blanchard, Fabian Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Sustainable management of natural resources, and in particular fisheries, must take into account several conflicting objectives. This is the case in the French Guiana shrimp fishery for which profitability objectives imply a reduction in the fishing activity. On the one hand, this fishery has negative externalities on marine biodiversity due to discards. On the other hand, this fishery has positive externalities on the economy of the local community and interestingly enough on a protected seabird species in the area (the Frigatebird that feeds on discards). In this paper, we examine the viability of that system considering two sustainability objectives: an economic objective in terms of the profitability of the fishing activity, and a conservation objective in terms of the Frigatebird population. For that purpose, we have developed a dynamic model of that bioeconomic system and study here the trade-offs between the two conflicting objectives. It provides a means to quantify the necessary give and takes involving the economic and ecological objectives that would ensure a viable management solution. Our study confirms the relevance of the viability approach to address natural resource management issues, which should lead to the development of new tools for the arbitration of conflicting sustainability, objectives. In particular, such tools could be used as a quantitative basis for cost-benefit analysis taking into account environmental externalities. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Multistage evolution of the Jijal ultramafic-mafic complex (Kohistan, N Pakistan): Implications for building the roots of island arcs Auteur(s) : Dhuime, B. The present study, realized on the Jijal mafic–ultramafic basal section of the Cretaceous Kohistan oceanic arc (N Pakistan), discards a crystal fractionation model from a single parental magma to take into account the geochemical and isotope variations observed between the plutonic crust and the underlying ultramafic section. The basal ultramafic rocks, i.e. dunites, wehrlites and clinopyroxenites, show high Mg#, extremely depleted REE patterns, no marked HFSE anomalies and high LILE enrichment. Cpx and leached whole rocks from this unit yield restricted εNd values (+ 5.5 to + 6.8), a large εSr range (− 5.9 to + 8.8) and mainly radiogenic 207Pb/204Pb ratios. The overlying mafic section, i.e. gabbroic rocks, displays low Mg# (46 < Mg# < 54), enriched REE patterns and marked HFSE anomalies. These plutonic rocks have also very homogeneous Sr and Pb isotopic compositions defining a restricted domain, which does not overlap that of the ultramafic samples. Moreover, Cpx from the basal ultramafics yield an Sm–Nd isochron at 117 ± 7 Ma interpreted as dating crystallization of the ultramafic section. Together, these results indicate that the mafic rocks on one hand and the ultramafic rocks on the other hand, originate from separate sources with specific emplacement underneath the subduction zone. A lherzolite lens, collected from the top of the mafic section, plots on the early Cretaceous Sm–Nd isochron and therefore yields the same 143Nd/144Nd initial ratio. This suggests that the ultramafic part of the lower Kohistan arc complex sampled the initiation stages of the subduction with production of magmas with boninite-like features. At this stage, the mantle wedge has been already modified by percolation of the first slab-derived fluids. On such a scenario the lherzolite lens would correspond to the lithospheric mantle underneath the arc before its initiation. A multi-stage history is proposed for the evolution for the Kohistan arc through not, vert, similar 30 Ma. Stage #1 reflects the spontaneous initiation of subduction associated with extensive boninitic affinity magmatism, stages #2 and #3 are related to arc building by tholeiitic melts and, a fourth step (stage #4) corresponds to the intra-crustal differentiation. Tome 2 Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Biseau, Alain Charuau, Anatole Biseau, Alain Résumé : The theory of the evaluation of discards applied in phase 1 to the main eight species is described. Then, for each one, the biological parameters are calculated and diagnosis based on length cohorts analysis JONES (1981) are proposed The gadoids, whiting and cod, are heavily exploited and the catches are always recruitment dependant. The bottom species (monks, megrim, rays and Nephrops) are fully exploited or lightlhy over - exploited. Using the fisheries statistics of the data basis about the Celtic Sea, a first classification of fleets is proposed with the individual fishing powers.
Ma peche a la crevette sur le plateau guyanais les techniques americaines et l'analyse des captures Auteur(s) : Morice, Jean Warluzel, Noël Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : In November and December 1959, one of us was assigned by the Credit and Technical Assistance Society (SATEC) to do a study on shrimp fishing on the Guiana Shield as practised by American trawlers (Figure 1). This study had both technological and biological goals. It was first necessary to describe the fishing boats and the methods used by American shrimp boats to fish in the Guianas. Each step of processing and packaging of the shrimp was monitored on board as well as on land, from catch up to storage under refrigerated conditions until commercialisation. It was then necessary to evaluate the relative proportions of shrimp and fish in the catches in order to establish the factors governing productivity of the operations. This was done with a view for establishing a fleet of fishing boats in French Guyana wishing to exploit as much of the catches as possible. American trawlers discard all fish and shellfish that are not marketable by American standards. The flat trawls used by ships based in Georgetown (British Guyana) or in Paramaribo (Surinam) are not designed for catching fish; but during the expedition off the shore of Surinam, we observed that a good part of catches was made up of various marketable species, including flatfishes, many goatfishes, pompano fishes, rockfishes, etc. It was thus important to weigh, insofar as possible, species that were discarded. ... In order to study the genetic consequences of production of oyster larvae in hatcheries, two factors, specific to hatcheries, were examined: the effect of discarding the smallest larvae (i.e. culling) and the effect of temperature (20°C versus 26°C). A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of larval populations and family assignment, limiting possible environmental bias and allowing the study of a relatively large number of families using a limited number of larval tanks. Our results show that three multiplexed highly polymorphic microsatellite markers are a powerful tool for family assignment and, consequently, for the study of bivalve larvae genetics. Culling, by selective sieving of the smallest larvae is an advantageous practice at a phenotypic scale as it reduced variance in larval size, variance of developmental rate and time to settlement. Culling of 50% of the larval population only led to 15% less spat, showing a positive phenotypic correlation between larval growth and settlement success. However, culling represents a substantial risk for diversity loss, because it increases the variance of reproductive success among parental oysters. The effective population sizes of early settling cohorts of settlement were lower than those of later ones. Our results show that the settlement of slow growing larvae significantly contributes to minimizing the variability of reproductive success and therefore to maximizing genetic diversity. These results corroborate the low estimations of variability of broodstocks sampled in several French commercial hatcheries, relative to natural populations. The genetic composition of the larval population and the resulting spat was significantly different between the two tested temperatures, revealing genotype x environment interaction for survival. Similarly, genotype x environment interaction was also observed for larval growth as a higher temperature exerted a positive influence on the expression of genetic variability for this trait. Consequently, we can conclude that a temperature of 26°C coupled with culling, to common practice in oyster hatcheries, is likely to amplify the selection pressure for fast growing larvae. To test for this hypothesis, we compared larval developmental traits in the progeny of a hatchery broodstock closed for 7 generations, with the progeny of wild oysters and the two possible hybrids. Our results show that selection of fast growing larvae can counteract presumed inbreeding depression, due to higher mean relatedness among hatchery broodstock than in the wild. Genetic effects of intensive rearing conditions at larval stage are significant and should be taken into account in hatchery practices, especially in terms of genetic diversity management. The development of the purse seine fishery on drifting Fish Aggregating devices in the Eastern Pacific Ocean: 1992-1998 Auteur(s) : Lennert-cody, Ce Hall, Melanie Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 15-19 octobre 1999 Résumé : Since the early 1990s, drifting Fish Aggregating Devices, or FADs, have rapidly become the dominant type of floating object used by the purse seine fishery in the Eastern Pacific Ocean to capture tunas. The development of this fishery for larger vessels is described using data collected by observers aboard vessels of more than 363 metric tons fish-carrying capacity. Bamboo rafts, equipped with radio-transmitters that allow for semi-continuous monitoring, are typically used as FADs. Old purse seine netting is often suspended below the bamboo raft to give the FAD an enhanced underwater profile. Similar to the fishery on flotsam between 1992-1998, most sets on FADs were made before 8 am, with skipjack and bigeye being the dominant tuna species caught, and yellowfin tuna captured in lesser amounts. Discard ratios of skipjack and bigeye were comparable for the two modes of fishing; however, the success rate on FADs for bigeye was more than twice that on non-FAD floating objects ("logs"). In addition, the fishery on logs was largely a coastal hshery, while the fishery on FADs extended west to 150 W, into areas that had not been significantly utilized by the purse seine fleet. The capture of tunas per set varied most with area, season and year. Nonetheless, capture per set for at least one of the three tuna species was also found to vary with the depth of the purse seine net and the amount of the netting hanging below the FAD. The effect of net depth and FAD depth on tuna capture varied by area, season and FAD color. Predation and aggressiveness in host plant protection: a generalization using ants from the genus Azteca Auteur(s) : Dejean, Alain Grangier, J. Leroy, Céline Orivel, Jérôme Auteurs secondaires : Ecologie des forêts de Guyane (ECOFOG) ; Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD) - Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - AgroParisTech - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Laboratoire Evolution et Diversité Biologique, UMR-CNRS 5174 ; Université Paul Sabatier - Toulouse 3 (UPS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Springer Verlag Résumé : In studying the ant genus Azteca, a Neotropical group of arboreal species, we aimed to determine the extent to which the ants use predation and/or aggressiveness to protect their host plants from defoliating insects. We compared a territorially dominant, carton-nester, Azteca chartifex, and three plant-ant species. Azteca alfari and Azteca ovaticeps are associated with the myrmecophyte Cecropia (Cecropiaceae) and their colonies shelter in its hollow branches; whereas Azteca bequaerti is associated with Tococa guianensis (Melastomataceae) and its colonies shelter in leaf pouches situated at the base of the laminas. Whereas A. bequaerti workers react to the vibrations transmitted by the lamina when an alien insect lands on a leaf making it unnecessary for them to patrol their plant, the workers of the three other species rather discover prey by contact. The workers of all four species use a predatory behaviour involving spread-eagling alien insects after recruiting nestmates at short range, and, in some cases, at long range. Because A. alfari and A. ovaticeps discard part of the insects they kill, we deduced that the workers' predatory behaviour and territorial aggressiveness combine in the biotic defence of their host tree. From fleet census to sampling schemes: an original collection of data on fishing activity for the assessment of the French fisheries Auteur(s) : Berthou, Patrick Guyader, Olivier Leblond, Emilie Demaneche, Sebastien Daures, Fabienne Merrien, Claude Lespagnol, Patrick Éditeur(s) : ICES 2008 Annual Science Conference, 22-26 september 2008, HALIFAX, CANADA Résumé : The development on the ecosystem-based approach to fisheries implies to improve integrated analysis of fisheries by considering the biological as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the exploitation and thus, an improvement in the knowledge of fleets structure, evolution and activity. Since 2000, Ifremer has been implemented a Fisheries Information System (FIS), a multidisciplinary monitoring network allowing an integrated and comprehensive view of fishery systems including biological, technical, environmental and economical components. The FIS covers all the French fisheries, including the so-often neglected small-scale fisheries. One of the originalities of the FIS lies in the fleet monitoring procedure: a comprehensive collection of annual activity calendars aiming at characterizing the inactivity or activity of the vessels each month of the year and, in the latter case, the métiers practised (use of a gear to target one or several species) and the main fishing areas. This survey covers all the French fishing fleets and provides minimum but exhaustive information on the vessels. It is particularly instructive for the small-scale fisheries, where catches and effort data are often incomplete. Furthermore, this exhaustive data allows stratifying the fleet in fleets (typologies) and thus provides the basis (i) for the implementation of sampling schemes to estimate catches, landings, discards or economic performance of the different fleets and (ii) for the development of a fleet-métier matrix giving the possibility of identifying at the time, the structure of the whole fleet in fleets, the métier polyvalence of the vessels and the allocation of fishing effort on the different exploited fishing resources. Etude des processus de dérive et de sélection liés aux pratiques d'élevage en écloserie d'huître creuse Auteur(s) : Boudry, Pierre Résumé : Genetic consequences of production of Pacific oyster larval in hatchery: drift and selective pressures related to rearing practices. In order to study the genetic consequences of production of oyster larvae in hatcheries, two factors were examined: the effects of discarding the smallest larvae (i.e. culling) and temperature effects. A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of the larval population. The results show that high polymorphic microsatellite-based family assignment is a powerful tool for the study of bivalve larvae genetics. Culling by selective sieving is an advantageous practice at a phenotypic scale, but also represents a substantial risk for diversity loss if parentage assignment is not introduced as a breeding practice. Settlement of slow growing larvae contributes to minimizing the variability of reproductive success and therefore to maximizing genetic diversity. These results corroborate the lower estimations of variability made on broodstocks from French commercial hatcheries relative to natural populations. Temperature exerts an influence on the expression of genetic variability for larval growth. A temperature of 26°C, coupled with culling could amplify the selective effect. Furthermore, selection of fast growing larvae has proven to counteract inbreeding depression at this stage. Genetic effects of intensive rearing conditions are significant and should be taken into account in hatchery practices, especially in terms of genetic diversity management. Tome 1 Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Biseau, Alain Résumé : The entire study is divised into three parts :
Phase 1 - Collection of data and description of fisheries.
Phase 2 - Diagnosis on the exploitation level for the main species.
Phase 3 - Fleets analysis and simulation of the exploitation of the fishery.
In addition to the description of the fisheries, in the first part, a very cheap method for the study of discards is described for all species and all fleets, the purpose being to use length cohorts analysis according to the JONES'method (1981). Preliminary works on monks, megrim and cuckoo ray are also
presented. Collaborative research: Development of a manual on elasmobranch handling and release best practices in tropical tuna purse-seine fisheries Auteur(s) : Poisson, Francois Seret, Bernard Vernet, Anne-lise Goujon, Michel Dagorn, Laurent Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Sci Ltd Résumé : The reduction of by-catch mortality is an objective of the ecosystem approach to fisheries and a request made by consumers. Elasmobranchs, an important component of the French tropical tuna purse seine fishery by-catch, are currently thrown back into the sea. Fishers interact with various types of elasmobranchs that range widely in size, weight and shape, and could pose various degrees of danger to the crew. A diversity of discarding practices within the fleet were reported, some practices were considered suitable, others needed to be adapted and improved and others simply had to be banned. The majority of the crews were likely to improve their handling practices if they were presented with practical suggestions that were quick and easy. Combining scientific observations and empirical knowledge from skippers and crew, a manual, providing appropriate handling practices to ensure crew safety and increase the odds of survival for released animals has been developed and disseminated. Bringing these good practices onto the decks of fishing vessels should contribute to the reduction of the fishing mortality of some vulnerable species. It would be positively viewed by consumers as an act that reduces fishing's footprint on the environment and promoting animal welfare which would improve the image of fishing industry. Mitigation research is by definition an iterative process and different complementary methods must be carried out at different levels of the fishing process to significantly reduce the mortality of the by-catch. Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments Auteur(s) : Barnes, David K. A. Galgani, Francois Thompson, Richard C. Barlaz, Morton Éditeur(s) : The Royal Society Résumé : One of the most ubiquitous and long-lasting recent changes to the surface of our planet is the accumulation and fragmentation of plastics. Within just a few decades since mass production of plastic products commenced in the 1950s, plastic debris has accumulated in terrestrial environments, in the open ocean, on shorelines of even the most remote islands and in the deep sea. Annual clean-up operations, costing millions of pounds sterling, are now organized in many countries and on every continent. Here we document global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste. While plastics typically constitute approximately 10 per cent of discarded waste, they represent a much greater proportion of the debris accumulating on shorelines. Mega- and macro-plastics have accumulated in the highest densities in the Northern Hemisphere, adjacent to urban centres, in enclosed seas and at water convergences ( fronts). We report lower densities on remote island shores, on the continental shelf seabed and the lowest densities (but still a documented presence) in the deep sea and Southern Ocean. The longevity of plastic is estimated to be hundreds to thousands of years, but is likely to be far longer in deep sea and non-surface polar environments. Plastic debris poses considerable threat by choking and starving wildlife, distributing non-native and potentially harmful organisms, absorbing toxic chemicals and degrading to micro-plastics that may subsequently be ingested. Well-established annual surveys on coasts and at sea have shown that trends in mega- and macro-plastic accumulation rates are no longer uniformly increasing: rather stable, increasing and decreasing trends have all been reported. The average size of plastic particles in the environment seems to be decreasing, and the abundance and global distribution of micro-plastic fragments have increased over the last few decades. However, the environmental consequences of such microscopic debris are still poorly understood. Évaluation des rejets sur la pêcherie de langoustine de Mer celtique Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Résumé : If Sea Bass fish farming (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) is currently experiencing an increase in Southern Europe, it is vital, in order to better reflect raising structures, to control its wastes. In order to do so, quantifying this species' wastes is essential to be able to present simple excretion ratios, easily useable by the farmer. Those ratios have been based on nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon masses established on intensive farming and 4 batches belonging to his stock (averaging 24, 5 to 362, 5 g). Each batch was followed up during the course of 1 month and fish farming in its entirety for 2 months. Mass assessments for nitrogen and phosphorus were level ((intrants = extrants) but never precise, contrary to what can be found in bibliography. The main wastes defined were linked to the biomasses found as well as the food quantity fed. Sea Bass carbon excretion could not be clearly defined. According to these follow ups, phosphorus would be the element better utilized by Sea Bass considering nutritional provision. Nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon quantities rejected through farming are very high since for nitrogen and carbon, 90% of the ingestion would be rejected in the environment. Sustainability of tropical small-scale fisheries: Integrated assessment in French Guiana Auteur(s) : Cisse, Abdoul Blanchard, Fabian Guyader, Olivier Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Sci Ltd Résumé : Like many tropical small-scale fisheries, the French Guiana coastal fishery is characterized by the high fish biodiversity of its ecosystem, the weak selectivity of the fleets exploiting the resources, and the heterogeneity of the vessels in terms of size and fishing techniques. The Rapfish method is used to assess sustainability within 11 fishery systems by means of 27 attributes relating to ecological, economic, social, and technological fields. Overall results indicate an average performance in the weak sustainability range. Comparisons made among the FSs show a gradient of sustainability performance from the western portion of the coast to the eastern portion. Several recommendations are formulated to raise the current “sustainability” status, such as the reduction of discards. This study is used as a complementary tool to the bioeconomic model in order to define a sustainable management plan for the French Guiana coastal fishery.
