We combine these results with preliminary thermobarometric estimates and existing data to place constraints on the timing and duration of the Brasiliano-Pan-African Orogeny in northeastern Brazil and on the subsequent late- to post-orogenic history. The Alcantil orthogneiss contains a complex zircon population, but the youngest concordant analyses yielded an age of 632 ± 17 Ma (2σ). These grains have low Th/U ratios (<0.1), and the age of 632 Ma is therefore interpreted as dating the metamorphic event responsible for the acquisition of the gneissic fabric. In the Caruaru biotite amphibole orthogneiss, concordant analyses provided an age of 618 ± 4 Ma (2σ), which we relate to emplacement of the protolith of the Caruaru orthogneiss. Together with available U-Pb data from the literature, the 632-600 Ma age range is regarded as dating development of a regional flat-lying foliation coeval with high-grade metamorphism (upper amphibolite facies conditions). The 586 ± 3 Ma age (2σ) of the Panelas pluton is similar to those of other granitic plutons associated with a voluminous plutonism of high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic nature that occurred at 590-580 Ma. This plutonism slightly predated or was synchronous with development of large strike-slip shear zones. Amphibole grains yielded 40Ar-39Ar ages ranging from 584 ± 4 Ma to about 530 Ma, suggesting that regional temperatures remained near the closing temperature of this mineral (≈500 °C) for a long time. Most 40Ar-39Ar biotite ages range from 552 to 533 Ma, but two samples yielded plateau ages of 519 ± 5 Ma and 509 ± 5 Ma. The inferred rather slow cooling of the studied region possibly reflects low rates of unroofing, allowing persistence of a protracted thermal anomaly caused by the massive injection of magmas at the end of the Neoproterozoic. The transition zone between the Pernambuco-Alagoas Domain and the Sergipano Belt (Borborema Province, NE Brazil): Geochronological constraints on the ages of deposition, tectonic setting and metamorphism of metasedimentary rocks Auteur(s) : Neves, Sergio p. High-grade metamorphic conditions are recorded by the garnet-sillimanite assemblage and common anatexis in pelitic paragneisses. Two samples dated by LA-ICP-MS in the north yielded a predominance of early Neoproterozoic detrital zircons, with age peaks between 990 Ma and 827 Ma, with the youngest grain suggesting deposition after 670 Ma. Low Th/U zircons (Th/U < 0.1) in these samples display a significant spread in ages, from 691 to 568 Ma. One sample in the south is dominated by a homogenous population of Paleoproterozoic grains, with a 2200 Ma peak. The southernmost sample also contains Paleoproterozoic zircons but the most abundant population is Neoproterozoic, and characterized by age peaks at c. 670, 647 and 623 Ma. These results show that deposition of sediments in the southern PEAL Domain and in the northern Sergipano Belt occurred in the Late Neoproterozoic. The differing age spectra between samples are correlated with potential source rocks in the study area or in its proximity, reflecting variable input from local sources. The data are interpreted to indicate that during the course of an extensional event at c. 673-647 Ma, Tonian granitic intrusions and synextensional metamorphic rocks were unroofed and eroded to provide zircons for sediments deposited in the north, whereas Paleoproterozoic and synextensional magmatic rocks were the main sources for sediments in the south. Peak metamorphic conditions and contractional deformation are constrained to c. 630-600 Ma. Geology of Northern Borborema Province, NE Brazil and its correlation with Nigeria, NW Africa Auteur(s) : Arthaud, M.H. Caby, Renaud Fuck, R.A. Dantas, L. Parente, C. Both are underlain by complex basement: Nigeria has c. 3.05 Ga Archaean crust but no known Palaeoproterozoic rocks >2.0 Ga; in NE Brazil, 2.6–3.5 Ga Archaean rocks form small cores within Palaeoproterozoic gneiss terrains affected by plutonism at c. 2.17 Ga. Both regions exhibit Late Palaeoproterozoic (c. 1.8 Ga) rift-related magmatism and metasedimentary sequences overlying the basement. The Seridó Group of NE Brazil (<0.65 Ga) is similar to the Igarra Sequence in SW Nigeria. The Ceará Group, which may date back to c. 0.85 Ga, is a passive margin deposit on crust thinned during initiation of an oceanic domain. In both provinces, basement and sedimentary cover were involved in tangential tectonics that resulted in crust-thickening by nappe-stacking associated with closure of this ocean. Frontal collision between c. 0.66 and 0.60 Ga later evolved to an oblique collision, generating north–south continental strike-slip shear zones at c. 0.59 Ga. In NE Brazil, the main Pan-African suture is probably buried beneath the Parnaíba Basin. The Transbrasiliano Lineament, interpreted as the prolongation of the Kandi–4°50 Lineament in Hoggar, may represent a cryptic suture. Étude géologique et géophysique des marges continentales passives : exemple du Zaïre et de l'Angola Auteur(s) : Moulin, Maryline Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The objective of the present work is to study the formation of the passive continental margins of the Central Segment of the South Atlantic, most particularly the Congo and Angola margins. We propose a combined approach, which integrates structural constraints based on geological cross-sections (based on seismic data) and global constraints based on plate kinematic reconstructions. The structural study is based on : i) MCS and refraction data collected during the ZaiAngo programme (a joint project conducted by Ifremer and Total) ; ii) proprietary, industrial seismic data (courtesy of Total) from the Angola margin and iii) on all available seismic lines from the Africa and Brazil conjugated margins, between Walvis Ridge and the Equatorial Fracture Zones. Based on theses data, three structural domains (continental, transitional and oceanic) have been defined, the major characteristics of which are : Crustal thinning occurs abruptly, mostly below the continental slope, over a lateral distance of less than 50 km. The top of the crust deepens as the Moho shallows. Only a few extensional structures are observed ; tilted blocks are very few (one or two, depending on the profile), found only on the upper part of the slope and sealed by a discordance prior to salt deposition. The transitional domain is characterized by the existence of a pre-salt basin lying over a thin crustal layer. No tilted blocks are observed in this domain and reflectors within the pre-salt sediment series are parallel to the base of the Aptian salt, over distances greater than 100 km, precluding the possibility of any significant deformation that would imply large horizontal motions. Two types of crust are observed in the transitional domain. "Type I" crust is found below the undeformed pre-salt sediment series located below the eastern part of the basin ; it is characterized by an upper layer of thickness greater than 5 km and a abnormal velocity layer (7.2 - 7.6 km/s), up to 6 km thick. "Type II" crust is less than 5 km thick and found below the salt compressive front that affects the western part of the basin. The salt cover is continuous (no erosion surface is observed), from the continental shelf to the western termination of the basin. Salt was not deposited in a confined environment (like in the Mediterranean), but in a shallow water, lagunal environment. This imposes the zero-level and constrains the paleo-bathymetry at the time of salt deposition, which dates the latest stage of margin formation. Understanding the formation of a margin cannot be approached without studying the homolog margin. Therefore, it is of major importance to reconstruct the closure of the ocean bordered by these homolog margins and take into account the constraints imposed by the kinematic reconstructions on the lateral motions of the lithospheric plates. In order to assess the relative position of the plates at the ocean closure (prior to crustal thinning), a global study was thus performed, integrating all geophysical and geological constraints, in the ocean and on land. The role of african intra-plate deformation and its limits and their consequences have been thoroughly studied. To juxtapose the margins of the central segment of the Southern Atlantic, it is all the margins bordering the Equatorial Atlantic that need to be adjuste precisely. The kinematic study of this last region shows that the reconstruction obtained are reliable, unambiguous with a quantifiable precision The best fitting poles (obtained using the PLACA software), show that it is impossible to close the margins beyond the superposition of the salt fronts, from the Angola and Brazil margins. The geological cross-sections based on seismic data from the homolog margins indicate that a 330 km wide basin with thin (< 12 km) crust was present at the time of the fit. This basin cannot result from horizontal movement related to pure stretching or simple shear, or any model implying conservative volume. This conclusion is consistent with the existence of presalt reflectors parallel to the salt layer wich extends to the platform: the formation of the pre-salt basin must be related to vertical motions. The scenario that we propose for the evolution of the Congo-Angola margin consist in four stages: the first phase corresponds to extensional deformation limited to the few tilted blocks observed on the upper part of the slope. During the second phase, the main crustal thinning occurs, vertical motions prevailes, resulting in the formation of the continental slope and in the subsidence of the basin. The third phase corresponds to the first stress striction: deformation is concentrated in a limited section of the basin, which corresponds to the salt compression front. A proto-oceanic crust is formed, probably composed of thinned continental crust intruded by mantle material. The second stress striction corresponds to the finale phase, resulting in oceanisation senso stricto. The evolution described shows that we can not apply conservative models for margin formation (such as McKenzie and Wernicke or any of their avatars). In order to explain this thinning, one should investigate non-conservative models (implying geochemical transformation, small scale convection, intrusion...) such as those proposed in marginal or continental basins with no horizontal movments. Tightening-up NE Brazil and NW Africa connections: New U-Pb/Lu-Hf zircon data of a complete plate tectonic cycle in the Dahomey belt of the West Gondwana Orogen in Togo and Benin Auteur(s) : Ganade, Carlos e. Here, we review the geodynamic evolution of the Dahomey belt and discuss new U–Pb and Lu–Hf zircon data in light of similar data previously acquired on the geologically related Northern Borborema Province, in NE Brazil. Eighteen samples from different tectonic settings and regions within the belt were collected for zircon isotopic investigation. Passive margin deposits of the Atacora Structural Unit and lower units of the Volta Basin have detrital zircon signatures compatible with the flanking West Africa Craton. The arc-related magmatism resulted from the east-dipping subduction of the Goiás-Pharusian oceanic lithosphere and is represented by a variety of granitoids emplaced in the Benino-Nigerian Shield between 670 and 610 Ma. These granitoids were mainly sourced from crustal reservoirs with subordinate juvenile input. Detrital zircon ages from syn-orogenic deposits in Benino-Nigerian Shield suggest that arc development could have started as early as 780 Ma. The main period of melting in the internal part of the belt, the Benino-Nigerian Shield, is related to crustal thickening and occurs only ca. 30 m.y. after initiation of the continental collision, marked by the ca. 610 Ma ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphism recorded at Lato Hills. Foreland development represented by the upper units of the Volta basin developed soon after continental collision and persisted with the development of the west-verging thrust front synchronously with the main period of crustal melting due to collision at ca. 580 Ma. The subvertical Transbrasiliano Lineament in South America, that corresponds to the Kandi Lineament in Africa, provides a present-day fit between NW Africa and NE Brazil. Restoration of the movement of the Transbrasiliano-Kandi Lineament (strike-slip plate boundary) places the Dahomey belt and Borborema Province (NE Brazil) along the same section of the West Gondwana Orogen. This configuration would explain some of the misfits previously discussed in the literature and aligns the UHP eclogites in Togo and NE Brazil. Révision des paramètres de croissance de la crevette Penaeus subtilis et étude de la faisabilité d'un modèle ECOPATH de l'écosystème littoral guyanais Auteur(s) : Doquin, Olivier Résumé : The brown shrimp Penaeus subtilis growth parameters has been studied by a lot of biologist since the fisheries of the three Guyana and Brazil has been created. The following through of the French Guyana’s fisheries had hallowed us to have an important database about shrimp boat lending. This atabase had permit us to fine the values used for predictive models helped by software like FISAT 2 in this case. This database had permit us to follow the evolution of the growth parameters along the fifteen last years.
This study had given us different results which are interesting. First, the L∞ values used by the COPACO workshop (Isaac et al, 1992) are under evaluated and the K values aren’t. in a second time, the K values of the female brown shrimp are decreasing in a significant way since 1989, this case is not the male’s one. At last, we haven’t fond a link between meteorological variation in French Guyana (rainfall, river’s flow, sunshine) or biological data (biomass, density) and the K variations.
A ecosystemic model feasibility study had been done for the French Guyana littoral. The data that are existing in the literature aren’t sufficient to build a model of this ecosystem. Relics of eclogite facies assemblages in the Ceara Central Domain, NW Borborema Province, NE Brazil: Implications for the assembly of West Gondwana Auteur(s) : Santos, T. J. S. Garcia, M. D. M. Amaral, W. S. Caby, Renaud Wernick, E. Arthaud, M. H. Dantas, E. L. Santosh, M. Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Elsevier Résumé : The Borborema Province, in the NE of Brazil, is a rather complex piece in the Brazil-Africa puzzle as it represents the junction of the Dahomeyide/Pharusian, Central African, Aracuai and Brasilia fold belts located between the West-African/Sao Luis, Congo/Sao Francisco and Amazonas craton. The correlation between the Dahomeyides from W-Africa (Ghana, Benin, Togo, and Mali) and the Borborema Province involves the Medio Coreau and Central Ceara domains. The inferred continuation of the main oceanic suture zone exposed in the Dahomeyides of W Africa is buried beneath the Phanerozoic Parnaiba Basin in Brazil (northwest of the Medio Coreau domain) where some high density gravity anomalies may represent hidden remnants of an oceanic suture. In addition to this major suture a narrow, nearly continuous strip composed of mainly mafic pods containing relics of eclogite-facies assemblages associated with partially migmatized granulite-facies metapelitic gneisses has been found further east in the NW Borborema Province. These high pressure mafic rocks, interpreted as retrograded eclogites, are located between the Transbrasiliano Lineament and the Santa Quiteria continental arc and comprise primitive to evolved arc-related rocks with either arc- or MORB-type imprints that can indicate either deep subduction of oceanic lithosphere or roots of continental and oceanic magmatic arcs. Average peak P-T conditions under eclogite-facies metamorphism (T=770 degrees C and P = 17.3 kbar) were estimated using garnet-clinopyroxene thermometry and Jd content in clinopyroxene. Transition to granulite-facies conditions, as well as later widespread re-equilibration under amphibolite facies, were registered both in the basic and the metapelitic rocks and suggest a clockwise P-T path characterized by an increase in temperature followed by strong decompression. A phenomenon possibly related to the exhumation of a highly thickened crust associated with the suturing of the Medio Coreau and Central Ceara domains, two distinct crustal blocks separated by the Transbrasiliano Lineament. Magnetite dominates susceptibilities larger than 1 mSI and biotite displays [001] lattice directions consistent with AMS k3 axes. In contrast, migmatites with a susceptibility lower than 0.5 mSI and no visible mesoscopic foliation provide crystallographic fabrics distinct from AMS and AAR. However, AAR remains consistent with the regional strain field. These results suggest that the correlation of field, AMS and crystallographic fabrics is not always straightforward despite the relatively simple organisation of the magnetic fabric in the anatexite. We conclude that AMS recorded the final stages of the strain field in the migmatite irrespective of its complex mesoscale structures and contrasting crystallographic fabrics. ; 1914-2014, a century of female anthropophagy in brazilian art : relevance and topicality ? At the beginning of the twentieth century, in Brazil, a radical artistic rupture took place, which marked the beginning of a new era. The resulting modernity differed from its European counterpart by the awareness of geographical, cultural and political distances that alienated Brazil from Europe and more specifically from its former colonial owner, Portugal. Brazilian modernity sought to define its identity through important basic elements that constitute the stuff that the New World is made of: cross-breeding, mythology and post-colonialism. The Brazilian avant-garde emerged around 1928 with the publication of The Anthropophagy Manifesto by Oswald de Andrade (1890-1954), who is thus the founder of the Anthropophagy, that we can define as a backward step into a reinvented form of ″Amerindianness″. The ″bad savage″ voices his criticism against impostures of the world. « Anthropophagy art is not a literary revolution, nor is it a social plea, nor a political pamphlet, nor a religious tract. It is all these things at the same time. Its law is simple: everything that is not me is of interest to me. The law of men is the law of Anthropophagy ». It thus prescribes eating up imported models and digesting them through the process of hybridization in the name of Brazilian identity. By displacing Freudian concepts, «Anthropophagy is the permanent transformation of the Taboo (man-eating) into a Totem (Brazilian identity) ». The permeating influences of psychoanalysis and anthropology need to be put in perspective: the displacement of the anthropophagous taboo remains a symbolic act of transgression, a metaphor, but the anthropophagic reference does not concern the pre-Columbian period, because it is updated. We propose to study this phenomenon through four questions: 1°- What are the relations between Anthropophagy, history, esthetics and ideology? 2°- What is the place of women Brazilian artists in the emergence of this movement, taking into account their decisive presence right from the start? 3°- Taking into account the resurgence of Anthropophagy from the second half of the 20th century onwards, what is the place of women artists in this phenomenon? Are they pursuing the same interests as the founders of the movement?4°- Can we deduce that there exists a specifically female genre within the anthropophagic movement of yesterday and of today? If so, what is its relevance? Where does it stand with respect to the contemporary concepts of post-modernity and globalization in the present-day art world? http://www.theses.fr/2014AGUY0766/document | Partager |
Analyse économique d'une nouvelle technique d'élevage de crevettes en cages flottantes au Brésil Auteur(s) : Paquotte, Philippe Éditeur(s) : Actes de la 8ème Conférence de l'IIFET (Marrakech, juillet 1996) Résumé : In the framework of French-Brazil co-operation, the French Institute of research for exploitation of the sea (IFREMER), the State of Bahia and the company Littoral Sul Maricultura have developed a new technique for shrimp farming (Penaeus vannamei) using floating cages. After trials carried out during three years, this technique turns out very interesting from several viewpoints. The growth speed and the survival rate are very good, the negative effects on the environmental quality are weak and local fishermen have proved eager to adopt this technique as a part-time activity. In the same time, a technico-economic analysis, using a computerised simulation tool, as well as a market analysis in the State of Bahia have been carried out in order to assess the feasibility of such a project and to help research and development decisions. Despite low first investment and good biological results, the ex-farm production cost of shrimps weighing 15 g is as high as 4,5 US$ per kilo. This price is due to the low productivity of the labour and to the cost of nets which have a short life-time. It is possible to consider this activity as profitable on the market of Salvador de Bahia. Nevertheless, the question is how to face the international competition, which is particularly strong in the case of tropical shrimps. The conditions allowing enterprises to develop a strategy based on product quality and environmentally friendliness are reviewed. Melt-bearing HT-mylonitic orthogneiss displays solid-state fabrics with coarse quartz ribbons and sutured grain boundaries. K-feldspar is often fractured and shows peripheral myrmekite. The textures typically become magmatic at the contacts with the Espinho Branco anatexite. Zircon crystals from two samples of the leucosome show Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2.2 Ga) inherited cores that are enveloped by recrystallised Neoproterozoic rims. These zircon grains define a discordia with lower intercept ages of 558 and 562 Ma but with large analytical errors. A leucogranite with transitional contacts with host diatexites provides a well-constrained zircon mean age of 566 ± 6 Ma (n = 15, 95% conf.), which is considered the best estimate for the peak metamorphic conditions. The transition from HT-mylonites to fine-grained mylonites and ultramylonites is marked by a progressive grain size reduction assisted by recrystallisation. Quartz crystallographic fabrics display [0 0 0 1] concentrations between Z and Y. K-feldspar and plagioclase fabrics record the activity of the (0 1 0)[0 0 1] and (0 1 0)[1 0 0] slip systems and, in the lower-temperature tectonites, the (1 0 0)[0 1 0] slip system. These results suggest a diachronic evolution in which an initial HT northern domain was deformed by intracrystalline slip and melt-assisted granular flow, followed by medium- to low-temperature solid-state creep in the southern shear zone domain. The mylonites therefore record the rheological heterogeneities responsible for the formation of a late continental shear zone that nucleated under partially molten conditions and was later reactivated through melt-absent strain localization following exhumation. New cytotoxic cyclic peptide from the latex of Croton urucurana Baillon (Euphorbiaceae) and in vitro investigation of its mechanisms of action ; Un nouveau cyclopeptide cytotoxique extrait du latex de Croton urucurana Baillon (Euphorbiaceae) : étude in vitro de son activité cytotoxique ; Novo ciclopeptídeo citotóxico do látex de croton urucurana baillon (Euphorbiaceae) e investigação de seu mecanismo de ação in vitro Auteur(s) : Cândido Bacani, Priscila de Matos Auteurs secondaires : Institut de recherche, santé, environnement et travail [Rennes] (Irset) ; Université d'Angers (UA) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université de Rennes 1 (UR1) - École des Hautes Études en Santé Publique [EHESP] (EHESP) - Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) - Structure Fédérative de Recherche en Biologie et Santé de Rennes ( Biosit : Biologie - Santé - Innovation Technologique ) Université Rennes 1 Georges Baffet Walmir Silva Garcez Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Croton urucurana Baillon (Euphorbiaceae), plant species popularly known in Brazil as “sangra-d’água”, is commonly found in Mato Grosso do Sul State (midwestern Brazil), where its latex is popularly used to treat several types of cancer. Despite the ethnopharmacological significance of the species, no phytochemical or cytotoxic studies of its latex have been published. In this context, the aim of the present study was to assess the cytotoxic activity of crude extracts, fractions and isolated compound from the latex of C. urucurana and to investigate the effects of crourorb A1 on the viability, apoptosis, cell cycle and cell migration of human hepatocarcinoma cell lines (Huh-7). Also, we have evaluated the viability of Huh-7 cells treated with crourorb A1 in 3D collagen gels. The cytotoxicity was detected using the sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay against six human cancer cells lines and one nontumor NIH/3T3 cell line (murine fibroblast). Studies on the mechanism of cell death of crourorb A1 were conducted in different test systems in vitro. The bioactive ethyl acetate phase obtained from the latex of C. urucurana afforded a novel cyclic peptide, [1−9-NαC]-crourorb A1, that proved active against NCIADR/ RES (ovary, multidrug-resistance phenotype) cells with the same potency as doxorubicin (positive control) and inactive up to the highest concentration tested against nontumor NIH/3T3 cells (GI50 = > 250 μg/mL). Crourorb A1 treatment decreases the cell viability of Huh-7 at dose and time dependent manner associated with induction of apoptosis by caspase 3/7 activation and increasing expression of pro-apoptotic proteins: Bak, Bid, Bax, Puma, Bim, and Bad and clived-caspase3 protein. The JNK/MAP pathway is involved in this induced cell death. Crourorb A1 effect is also associated with G2/M phase cell cycle arrest. In parallel, we observed that crourorb A1 treatment resulted in an increase of cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK1), cyclin B1 and cyclin D1 expressions. A significant reduction of Huh-7 cells migration by crourorb A1 can be assessed and we also show that cells grown on 3D collagen gels exhibited increased resistance to crourorb A1 when compared to 2D cell culture.
The critically endangered Goliath Grouper, Epinephelus itajara, is found in the turbid and brackish waters of French Guiana, where the species is subject to a coastal fishery. Goliath Grouper populations inhabit all rocky habitats and exhibit increasing abundance with depth. Around 30% of individuals less than 115 cm may derive from the abundant mangrove habitat along the french Guiana coast. There is a ontogenetic shift of the diet, primarily crustacivorous, individuals >140 cm become piscivorous. The Goliath Grouper population in French Guiana is composed primarily og juvelines. The fate of the juvelines is unknonw, some may be caught in the fishery, others may move to other habitat. No evidence of spawning or gonadal readiness was found in french Guiana. it is possible that environmental conditions (high turbidity and temperature) are not conducive to reproductive activity. Goliath Grouper may migrate down current from French Guiana to Trinidad and Tobago or further. No movement of Goliath Grouper was found against the current toward Brazil. French Guiana juveniles may be derived from spawns occuring off Brazil. Calculated total mortality of Goliath Grouper off French Guiana is high (0.65) in both fished and protected areas suggesting that illegal fishing is occuring within the protected area, or that emigration rates are high. Assuming that the adult population of Goliath Grouper in French Guiana has been reduced due to fishing, protection of spawning-size adults (larger than about 150 cm TL) should be instated. http://www.theses.fr/2014AGUY0721/document | Partager |

Group Nature Publishing Group Résumé : International audience The deeply eroded West Gondwana Orogen is a major continental collision zone that exposes numerous occurrences of deeply subducted rocks, such as eclogites. The position of these eclogites marks the suture zone between colliding cratons, and the age of metamorphism constrains the transition from subduction-dominated tectonics to continental collision and mountain building. Here we investigate the metamorphic conditions and age of high-pressure and ultrahigh-pressure eclogites from Mali, Togo and NE-Brazil and demonstrate that continental subduction occurred within 20 million years over at least a 2,500-km-long section of the orogen during the Ediacaran. We consider this to be the earliest evidence of large-scale deep-continental subduction and consequent appearance of Himalayan-scale mountains in the geological record. The rise and subsequent erosion of such mountains in the Late Ediacaran is perfectly timed to deliver sediments and nutrients that are thought to have been necessary for the subsequent evolution of sustainable life on Earth. Because of the symbiotic nature of endophytes, this survey aims to investigate the probality of discovering antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic activities in secondary metabolites of leaf endophytes isolated from plants of Amazon and Cerrado biomes. In this study, 147 cultivable microorganisms were isolated (130 fungi, 3 bacteria and 14 unidentified or unknown microbes) from 28 plant species (4 species collected in Brazil and 24 in French Guyana). All endophytes were identified by molecular analyses of specific rDNA regions, with genomic sequencing techniques. Fungal endophytes belonging to Xylariales order were the most frequently isolated in this study, represented by 25 isolates. Crude AcOEt extracts were produced from cultures of each isolated endophyte. A significant relative proportion (23,1%) of extracts showed activity in Candida albicans ATCC 10213, while 4% were active in Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213. The cytotoxic potencial of the extracts was evaluated for human cell lines KB (uterin cervical carcinome), MDA-MB-435 (melanoma) and MRC-5 (normal lung fibroblasts), and a significant proportion of them showed cellular proliferation inhibition (24,4%, 23,1% e 16,3%, respectively).Eighteen secondary metabolites were isolated by the fractionation of eight endophytic extracts. Seventeen of these substances had already been previously described in the literature: piliformic acid (24) and griseofulvin (25) isolated from Xylaria cubensis SNB-GCI02; phomopiron A (26), pyrenocin A (27), alterperilenol (28) and novae-zelandin A (29) isolated from Lewia infectoria SNB-GTC2402; 5-metilmellein (31) and dihidrosporothriorid (32) isolated from Xylaria sp. SNB-GTC2501; mycoleptodiscin A (34) and mycoleptodiscin B (35) isolated from Mycoleptodiscus sp. SNB-GTC2304; mycoepoxidien (36) and altiloxin A (37) isolated from Diaporthe pseudomangiferae SNB-GSS10; acremonisol A (40), semicochliodinol A (41) and cochliodinol (42) isolated from Chaetomium globosum SNB-GTC2114; colletofragaron A2 (43) isolated from Colletotrichum sp. SNB-GTC0201; flavoglaucin (44) isolated from Eurotium rubrum BBS01. Among these substances, flavoglaucin (44), isolated from E. rubrum BBS01, showed comparable antifungal activity with the positive control fluconazol in C. albicans (MIC of 4 µg.mL-1). Flavoglaucin (44) also showed IC50 >10 µM in normal MRC-5 cells, becoming a good candidate for further studies. In this work, the cytotoxic activity of colletofragaron A2 (43), isolated from Colletotrichum sp. SNB-GTC0201 was described for the first time. The unpublished substance named pyrrocidin C (30) isolated from L. infectoria SNB-GTC2402 was identified by spectroscopic analyses (Casella et al., 2013). The pyrrocidin C (30) was active in S. aureus ATCC 10213 (MIC of 2 µg.mL-1), and was not considered cytotoxic for normal MRC-5 cells (IC50 >10 µM), showing selectivity in antimicrobial activity. These results demonstrate the great endophytic fungal diversity in plants of Amazon and Cerrado biomes, along with the chemodiversity associated to the secondary metabolites of these endophytes. Tropical fungal endophytes, like those seen in this work, may emerge as a new source of antimicrobial and cytotoxic substances.
