Breaking Sexual Silences in the Caribbean - Workshop Programme Auteur(s) : Breaking Sexual Silences Project Éditeur(s) : University of the West Indies Cave Hill/University of Reading University of the West Indies Cave Hill/University of Reading ( Barbados ) Résumé : (Funding) Support for the development of the technical infrastructure and partner training provided by the United States Department of Education TICFIA program. Outline from the website at http://www.reading.ac.uk/minorities/Projects/min-project-breaking-sexual-silences.aspx In recent years, some of the most urgent and highly-charged public and political debates in the Caribbean have centred on sexual citizenship and gay rights. To date, popular cultural forms and the acute homophobia of the dancehall have dominated national and international attention. The very public exchanges between Caribbean musicians and western-based gay rights campaigners have given the region a reputation for homophobia, intolerance and hate crimes. This project seeks to shift the axes of these debates by drawing on a recent body of Caribbean creative writing that addresses issues of sexual self-determination and sexual diversity in a more positive and progressive way. It will make visible the possibilities for understanding sexual differences and the modes of reconciliation to be found in a literary archive. The project will also engage a group of Caribbean scholars across other disciplines to develop a new language for articulating sexual difference. It will stage a panel debate for a Caribbean public, as well as producing academic publications and supporting graduate work. Droits : All rights reserved by the source institution. | Partager |

At the peak of the second colonial Empire, citizenship there has three essential characteristics: it is fragmented by diverse forms of hierarchisation of the electorate ; it is reserved solely for nationals of the colonial Empire, the French and natives within a differentiated conception of nationality ; it is marked by the idea of civilisation. This situation came about in several stages: in 1978, specific citizenship is devised to civilise the newly freed; between 1848 and 1870, in Algeria there is some experimentation with local citizenship for the French, foreigners and natives, but this was abandoned; between 1870 and 1898, local citizenship is devised, expanded to include national elections for the natives of French India, whilst with the Algerian financial delegations, the “representation of interests” is accompanied by French citizenship without the right to participate in local elections. Capitalism’s crisis effects resulted in social movement unprecedented led by a group that mobilized in the style of expressing unrest and managing demands that were sent to French government. This social movement is new in Guadeloupe because of variety actions and type of demands. It’s therefore necessary to consider its meaning: a civil society woke up creating new spaces for debate. Outside regular school and family structures, the youth are exposed to other environments that allow them to learn from adults. This is referred to as “tiers-lieu éducatif” or "third-place education". Churches in Haitian communities in Martinique emerge, in our opinion, from this experience. In fact, the Haitian Diaspora is concentrated in areas that contain small ecclesiastical strongholds, enterprises led by self-acclaimed pastors who originate from the exiled community, assuming responsibility for their progeny, and thus helping them to integrate in the society. This article highlights the function of Education in these areas highly populated by Haitians. Following the example of the native Evangelical Communities, we have formulated the explanatory hypothesis that we have verified: A function that does not fulfil, on the other hand, the few voodoo temples on the island, led by the sons of Toussaint Louverture. Small Island States: Vulnerable, Resilient, Doggedly Perseverant or Cleverly Opportunistic? Auteur(s) : Baldacchino, Godfrey Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : While ever facing risks and vulnerabilities, small island states continue impress with a wily and adroit commercialisation of imaginative ‘resources’: these include discrete tax shelters, citizenship, internet domains, philately, generic drugs, place-branded goods and geostrategic services (including tourism). However, the option to migrate is increasingly fraught by the regulations of the receiving countries, wary of heightened security concerns, stagnating economies and rising xenophobia. Comparisons with subnational island jurisdictions, which treasure their autonomy but are not interested in full sovereignty, are instructive. At the turn of the century, the challenge for Martinique is to build a model of endogenous development that requires its integration in the Caribbean. There is consensus for this approach, both in terms of economic actors as local and national governance. But what the people think? On the diplomatic front, this orientation is reflected by a gradual accession of Martinique to different Caribbean community organizations as a full member. All these developments are taking place in a socioeconomic context characterized for Martinique by a population in the process of aging, structural unemployment, and a departure from the territory of graduates. In this perspective, the development of trade with the Caribbean will induce the material and immaterial flows and for Martinique, perspectives employability in Caribbean countries with more lenient unemployment. These contextual elements questioning the evolution of Martinican society in a new international landscape that goes beyond political and diplomatic agreements, as it will lead to encounters between individuals of different cultures and business practices, directly or indirectly, materialized or dematerialized. This study focuses on the perspective of individuals and the way they look at what should be regarded as a social project and how they contribute. It is part of a perspective of the development of professional mobility of Martinique in the Caribbean and on the conditions for its implementation. She questions the environment in which today operate occupational mobility projects internationally Martinicans and social representations that are running in this new paradigm.
