Université des Antilles Description : Chlordecone is a persistent organochlorine pesticide widely used between 1972 and 1993 in the French West Indies to control the root borer in banana fields. Chlordecone use resulted in long-term pollution of soils, contamination of waters, of aquatic organisms, and of fields. Chlordecone is known to be neurotoxic, to increase prostate cancer, and to have negative effects on cognitive and motor development during infancy. In Guadeloupe, most of the freshwater species living in contaminated rivers exceed the French legal limit of 20 ?g·kg?1 wet weight. In the present study (ANR MACHLOMA), we chose a transcriptomic approach to study the cellular effects of chlordecone in the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii, an important economical species in Guadeloupe. L'élevage de la crevette tropicale d'eau douce Auteur(s) : Griessinger, Jean-michel Lacroix, Denis Gondouin, Philippe Résumé : This book represents a two year study by a team of French biologists to collect, summarise and present the experience and knowledge gained in the rearing of the giant freshwater prawn, not only in the French overseas territories but also in the main countries which are developing this culture. This document comprises four parts :
- The first describes the world market. The prawn rearing is already an economic reality in the tropical world, the United States and in Europe.
- The second on shows that, although the culture techniques are quite complex, production systems can be adapted to local conditions and markets.
- The third part is a practical guide, both for investors and farmers, giving all necessary data to start-up and monitor a project in the best conditions.
- The final part summarises the main elements of the biology of this species, in order that people interested in its development may have a better understanding of its life history.
The authors were based at the aquaculture laboratory of the Ifremer station of French Guiana from 1989 to 1990 and had 15 years previous experience of this culture in Tahiti and the Caribbean. Regarding this initial complete French synthesis on this species in a special care has been given to balance accurate scientific reporting with the objective of reaching a wider audience.
Quantitative relationship of two viruses (MrNV and XSV) in white-tail disease of Macrobrachium rosenbergii Auteur(s) : Zhang, Hj Wang, Hm Yuan, Jf Li, Lj Zhang, Jh Bonami, Jean-robert Shi, Zl Éditeur(s) : Inter-Research Résumé : Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) and extra small virus (XSV) were purified from diseased freshwater prawns M rosenbergii and used to infect healthy post-larvae (PL) by an immersion method. Three groups of prawns were challenged with various combined doses of MrNV and XSV. Signs of white-tail disease (WTD) were observed in Groups 1 and 2, which had been challenged with combinations containing relatively high proportions of MrNV and low proportions of XSV. By contrast there was little sign of WTD in Group 3, which had been challenged with a higher proportion of XSV than MrNV. A 2-step Taqman real-time RT-PCR was developed and applied to quantify viral copy numbers in each challenged PL. Results showed that genomic copies of both viruses were much higher in Groups 1 and 2 than they were in Group 3, indicating that MrNV plays a key role in WTD of M rosenbergii. The linear correlation between MrNV and XSV genome copies in infected prawns demonstrated that XSV is a satellite virus, dependent on MrNV, but its role in pathogenicity of WTD remains unclear. Contamination of some aquatic species with the organochlorine pesticide chlordecone in Martinique Auteur(s) : Coat, Sophie Bocquene, Gilles Godard, Eric Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Martinique is a French overseas department whose economy relies heavily on agriculture. Organochlorine pesticides, mainly chlordecone, were used for banana cultivation to eradicate banana weevil over a period of 40 years. Chlordecone is chemically stable, and has a strong affinity for fatty tissues. It is therefore able to bioaccumulate in animals and thereby represent a threat to ecosystems and man. Soils from banana plantations in Martinique are heavily contaminated with chlordecone. Possible transfer of these molecules from agricultural watersheds to the aquatic environment and the organisms that live in it is feared. The hypothesis that ecosystems of Martinique might be highly contaminated with this organochlorine pesticide was investigated. Chlordecone levels were measured in various freshwater and marine species. Data show a heavy contamination of many carnivorous and detritivorous species (fish and prawns). Concentrations measured in wild or farmed tilapia are among the highest ever reported in the literature. Some coastal species (fish and lobster) were also found to be contaminated, although to a lesser extent. Given the biogeochemical behavior of chlordecone, the most likely route of contamination is food. Detected concentrations in marine organisms are below the tolerated limits established by authorities. however. the impact of other sources of exposure, namely, contaminated water and root vegetables, remains to be investigated. Retour sur deux projets de développement en aquaculture outre-mer : leçons pour l’avenir Auteur(s) : Lacroix, Denis Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Lessons for the future from two development projects in aquaculture in the French overseas territories. Numerous research and development projects have been launched since the seventies in the French overseas territories. Their aim was to foster new activities in agriculture based on local productions for local markets, notably in the French West Indies (FWI). In this paper we analyze two development projects on the rearing of giant freshwater prawn, one in the FWI and the other in French Guyana, over twenty years after their launching. The purpose of these compared studies is twofold: first to try to understand why a set of relevant technical innovations ended in failure 15 years later; second to identify recommendations in terms of methodology in order to diminish risks of mistakes or failure for future projects. To reach this goal we followed two approaches. A first analysis is based on a set of three criteria: social acceptability, legitimacy and time planning. The second analysis, justified by the subjective need for an explanatory tool, is based on the actor-network theory. The results show that beyond the levels of political support and financial investment and support the three key criteria for success are: (i) reactivity of the decision-makers, notably when markets change, (ii) quality of leadership transfer between the launching phase and the stabilized phase, and (iii) capacity of the decision-makers to take into account the concrete consequences of the various scenarios. Regarding this third criterion, our analysis suggests that the scenario of full technical success needs to be explored, notably in terms of economic sustainability. The integration of these two types of analyses into an ex-ante frame should contribute to reducing risks of failure in similar development projects.
