INRA, CFCS Description : The Creole pig has always been part of the rural and suburban landscape of Martinique. Currently, this breed is not integrated into a research and conservation program. The Natural Park of Martinique Region (PNRM) has the objective to maintain and valorize the genetic heritage of Martinique?s Creole pig and develop a niche business. Based on PNRM knowledge, some Creole pigs live freely in the mountains in the North, in the South coast and in a few disparate traditional breeders located in the countryside. It is essential to carry out an inventory of the local pig population to propose a scheme for conservation and economic development. In order to favour the appropriation of the Creole pig niche, the PNRM, as a decision maker, acts in a systemic and holistic way by considering the whole Martinican territory and the pig sub-sector: producers involved in the COOPMAR pig farmers? cooperative, researchers of INRA (FWI), the food chain and at least (in a second phase) the consumers and the Martinican society. First of all, the pig farmers are involved (private family farms and specialised pig producers). Researchers and technicians from PNRM and INRA- URZ (Animal production research unit) and INRA-PTEA (Tropical platform in animal experimentation) are performing experimental studies both in controlled conditions and in farms, in order to: i) determine phenotypic and genetic characteristics of Martinique?s Creole pigs in comparison with other pig breeds from the Caribbean area; ii) help at designing genetic management to maintain the population and avoiding inbreeding; iii) help at defining feeding management by a) establishing, at the whole territorial food chain, an inventory of co or by-products available for pig feeding; b) implementing experimental studies in technology for conservation; c) implementing feeding and growing experiments and finally iv) help at defining eco-friendly production systems a) aiming at generate an adequate revenue and b) focusing on ecosystem services such as meat quality, socio-cultural services and circular economy. INRA, CFCS Description : Farmers are very inventive, but their innovations often remain confined to their farm, or to small local networks. And the interest they might have for farmers other than their inventors is seldom analyzed. Tracking on-farm innovations aims at finding technical or organizational innovations designed by farmers, to characterize their agronomic, economic and environmental performance and analyze the conditions in which this performance is expressed. The talk presents the various stages of this tracking approach, applied to innovative cropping systems, basing on a variety of recent works, in France, Argentine, Burkina Faso and China: (1) Defining what we are looking for; (2) Identifying innovative systems; (3) Describing and characterizing innovative systems; (4) Assessing innovative systems; (5) Specifying the conditions for the success of innovative systems. The results of the tracking are aimed not only at the farmers, but at their advisors and researchers too: (i) Innovative and effective cropping systems, which can be a source of inspiration for farmers; (ii) Confirmation of the interest of a principle for reasoning cropping systems; (iii) Innovative practices, analyzed within a systemic framework, which can serve as bricks for the design of new systems; (iv) Questions to be looked into more thoroughly by experimentation. Compared to traditional approaches in agronomy, tracking innovative cropping systems provides a double break: break with a top-down approach, where agricultural R & D is regarded as the only source of innovation: by mobilizing the innovative capacities of farmers, tracking increases our collective capacity to invent new practices or new cropping systems, by using not only technical and scientific knowledge, but also the empirical knowledge, that is so rich in agriculture. And break with the primacy given to experimentation, as a source for the production of knowledge and the assessment of innovations. The limitations of these methods are now clear: long-term degradation of soil fertility, impacts on the environment and human health, high consumption of fossil fuels, low efficiency of inputs and threats to food security in a context of climate change. Would farming practices that rely on the activation of ecological processes be an alternative to achieve a balance between high productivity and environmental preservation? While many studies suggest a positive relationship between soil biodiversity and ecosystem services, there is considerable debate on the form such agricultural systems should take. This study reviewed the state of current knowledge and identified aspects requiring further research to achieve the aim of sustainable intensification of agriculture. The following major points emerged: 1) Most studies focused on the evaluation of individual practices. However, changes in farmers’ cropping practices to take advantage of soil biodiversity services would need to manage not only the interactions between various practices but also the trade-off between the technical and socio economic constraints of cropping systems. Advances in agricultural system design approaches may help to ensure appropriate trade-offs. 2) More attention should be given to drawing on knowledge from different sources: laboratory studies focusing on the ecological functions of soil biodiversity, experimental surveys on farmers’ fields to rank the farming practices and processes to be included in site-specific models, and on- station experiments to test hypotheses and acquire additional reference material. 3) Whereas advances in technical and scientific knowledge provide an increasing number of relevant indicators for characterizing biodiversity and ecological functions, studies are rarely targeted at the development of indicators that are accessible to farmers or their technical advisors. The lack of indicators accessible to grassroots players for evaluating the impacts of their decisions on soil biodiversity remains a serious obstacle to the development of innovative agro-ecological systems. Jane's career: a story of Jamaica Auteur(s) : de Lisser, Herbert G. de Lisser, Herbert George, 1878-1944 Éditeur(s) : Gleaner Co. Gleaner Co. ( Kingston, Jamaica ) Résumé : (Funding) Support for the development of the technical infrastructure and partner training provided by the United States Department of Education TICFIA program. (Biographical) From Wikipedia for H. G. de Lisser, from 29 June 2013: Herbert George de Lisser CMG (9 December 1878 - 19 May 1944) was a Jamaican journalist and author. He has been called "one of the most conspicuous figures in the history of West Indian literature". De Lisser was born in Falmouth, Jamaica, and attended William Morrison's Collegiate School in Kingston. He started work at the Institute of Jamaica at the age of 14. Three years later he joined the Jamaica Daily Gleaner, of which his father was editor, as a proofreader, and two years later became a reporter on the Jamaica Times. In 1903, De Lisser became assistant editor of the Gleaner and was editor within the year. He wrote several articles for the paper every day. He also produced a novel or non-fiction book every year, beginning in 1913 with Jane: A Story of Jamaica, significant for being the first West Indian novel to have a central black character. Another famous novel of his, The White Witch of Rosehall (1929), is linked to a legend of a haunting in Jamaica. De Lisser also wrote several plays. In December 1920 he began publishing an annual magazine, Planters' Punch. De Lisser devoted much time and effort to the revival of the Jamaican sugar industry and represented Jamaica at a number of sugar conferences around the world. He was also general secretary of the Jamaica Imperial Association, honorary president of the Jamaica Press Association, and chairman of the West Indian section of the Empire Press Union. He was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the 1920 New Year Honours. Wedding of the Year Auteur(s) : Guyana Chronicle Résumé : (Funding) Support for the development of the technical infrastructure and partner training provided by the United States Department of Education TICFIA program. Tales from the morgue… (A look at some of the stories that made the news ‘back-in-the-day’ with Clifford Stanley) Wedding of the year ANOTHER strange ‘wedding’ ….an all men affair… sent the down-town Charlestown area into a furore on Friday night as thousands blocked the traffic to get a glimpse of the ‘yellow tie’ men. The cutting of the three-tier cake was carried out without police intervention, unlike the last time when they were arrested and charged. The ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ kissed afterwards. Most of the notable characters, including ‘Anna’, ‘Miss Tiger Bay’, ‘Miss Ann’s Grove’, ‘Miss Bougala’, ‘Lady Cross Street’, ‘Countess of Berbice’, ‘Princess Desiree’, ‘Lady Ivlor’, ‘The Princess Royal of Essequibo’ and ‘Miss Hadfield Street’ were in attendance as bridesmaids. They displayed the latest fashions in headwear, shoes and dresses, causing spectators to gasp as they wended their way up to the reception hall on Russell Street. The ‘bride’ wore white chantilly lace over slipper satin. ‘Her’ headdress was a coronet of seed pearls. ‘She’ was bedecked with diamante necklace and earrings to match. The wedding portrait was taken at Lees Photo Studio of High Street, where mounted Police were called out to control the huge crowd which was gathered there. Later, two platoons of riot squad men were rushed to the wedding reception area to ease a traffic jam. (Guiana Graphic: Page One, July 12, 1959) Editor’s Note: Does anyone know whether any of these ‘girls’ are still alive? If so, do drop us a line. Evaluation of floating cages as an experimental tool for marine shrimp culture studies under practical earthen pond conditions Auteur(s) : Chim, Liet Castex, Mathieu Pham, Dominique Brun, Pierre Lemaire, Pierrette Wabete, Nelly Schmidely, P Mariojouls, C Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The New Caledonia blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris is commercially produced under semi-intensive rearing conditions. The size of the farming earthen ponds (510 ha) and the subsequent production constraints make it difficult to use them as experimental units for random experiments. Moreover, since every pond has its own characteristics, ponds' effects cannot be ruled out, thus making it hard to define true replicates. In order to design future experiments under conditions resembling those used in production, we evaluated the possible use of floating cages as experimental units with the aim of assessing treatment effects with a reasonable statistical power. To this end, two sets of floating cages were placed respectively in two different ponds in a commercial farm. In both cases the zootechnical conditions in the cages were similar in post-larvae origin, management, and diet and feeding regime. The aim of the study was to evaluate on a technical basis the possibility of rearing shrimps in floating cages set up in earthen ponds and to assess this method from a statistical standpoint. Shrimps reared in and outside the cages showed comparable growth and survival rates. The variability in the zootechnical parameters between cages, expressed as the estimated coefficient of variation (CV) for survival rate, total final biomass (g), final body weight (g), daily increment in body weight (g day− 1) and FCR were 11.0, 13.7, 4.4, 5.4, and 7.0%, respectively. On the basis of these figures, we calculated for a given statistical power (80%) the number of replicates (cages) that would be required to reveal significant differences between two treatments, at a 5% level of significance. We found that for expected differences of 20% from the control mean, 3 and 6 floating cages per treatment would be reasonable to determine statistical differences for growth parameters and survival rate, respectively. Moreover, we showed a significant pond effect in regard to survival and growth between the two sets of cages. These results illustrated the within-farm variability among the ponds, and confirmed that the specific characteristics of each pond from the same farm make it difficult to use the ponds themselves as experimental units. The study demonstrates that rearing in floating cages is an economical, powerful and sensitive experimental tool for shrimp culture studies specifically carried out under conditions close to semi-intensive production. Engins et techniques de pêche de la Martinique Auteur(s) : Guillou, Alain Lagin, Alain-sabin Résumé : This document is mainly a catalogue of the different types of fishing gears noticed all around
Martinique during a ten years period (1985-1994)The technical description of these gears and their plans are presented, according to FAO standards.
Besides these descriptions, the origins of the introduction in Martinique of the main categories of gears are related .Moreover,, the operating conditions of each fishing gear as well as the targeted species are dealt with.
In addition, recent gears and techniques such as fishing aggregating devices (FADs) and associated fishing techniques are described. These ones appeared in Guadeloupe and Martinique during the last eighties years.
Furthermore, the main characteristics of the martinican fishing fleet structure are mentioned at the beginning of this work, with a special attention to dug-out canoes, because of their progressive disappearance.
Structural evolution of the North Pyrenean realm during mid-‐Cretaceous rifting event. Extreme crustal thinning and high thermicity: an analog for passive margins ; EVOLUTION DU DOMAINE NORD-PYRENEEN AU CRETACE. Its inversion during the Pyrenean orogeny allows for precious observations of the deep-seated processes occurring at the foot of distal margins. Some peculiar aspects characterizing the pre-Alpine hyper-extended domain are examined throughout the 400km long suture that is fossilized in the North Pyrenean Zone (NPZ). The High Temperature/Low Pressure (HT/LP) thermal imprint of the extensional event is studied thanks to a dataset of more than hundred peak temperature measurement by Raman spectroscopy of the carbonaceous material (RSCM). The pre- and syn-rift metasediments are characterized by an intense ductile deformation. Field and EBSD investigations of the mechanisms of deformation reveal ductile and syn-metamorphic processes. The emplacement conditions of the peridotite into crustal levels and localized exhumation is examined in the key-localities of Urdach, Saraillé-Tos de la Coustette, Moncaup, Lherz, Caussou-Bestiac and Salvezines, The results indicate an early boudinage of the crust during the rifting process, resulting in the direct superposition of pre-rift sediments on top of mantle peridotites. Field, textural and isotopic characterization of the various ophicalcite and breccias found in the vicinity of the peridotite outcrops allow to decipher their exhumation history. New Ar-Ar geochronological results allow to precise the temporal evolution of the NPZ.
Mise en évidence des relations phénotypiques et phylogénétiques à l'intérieur du genre Thunnus par une analyse multicritère Auteur(s) : Le Gall, Jean-yves Laurec, Alain Chardy, Pierre Éditeur(s) : Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle Résumé : The study is based on available data of previous descriptive works dealing with the diagnostic characters of genus Thunnus seven species ; multivariable technics analysis are used for classification and ordination in order to examine the validity of specific groups usually admitted by classical technics of taxonomy analysis. Respective values of visceral, squelettic and meristic characters are reviewed. Building of a cladogram (by cladistic analysis) based on the coding of 12 characters with evolutive processes meaning leads to submit some hypothesis on phylogenetic relationships between species and group of species recognized progress of the present study. An investigation of human vs. technology-induced variation in catchability for a selection of European fishing fleets Auteur(s) : Mahevas, Stephanie Vermard, Youen Hutton, Trevor Iriondo, Ane Jadaud, Angelique Maravelias, Christos D. Punzon, Antonio Sacchi, Jacques Éditeur(s) : Oxford Univ Press Résumé : The impact of the fishing effort exerted by a vessel on a population depends on catchability, which depends on population accessibility and fishing power. The work investigated whether the variation in fishing power could be the result of the technical characteristics of a vessel and/or its gear or whether it is a reflection of inter-vessel differences not accounted for by the technical attributes. These inter-vessel differences could be indicative of a skipper/crew experience effect. To improve understanding of the relationships, landings per unit effort (lpue) from logbooks and technical information on vessels and gears (collected during interviews) were used to identify variables that explained variations in fishing power. The analysis was undertaken by applying a combination of generalized additive models and generalized linear models to data from several European fleets. The study highlights the fact that taking into account information that is not routinely collected, e. g. length of headline, weight of otter boards, or type of groundrope, will significantly improve the modelled relationships between lpue and the variables that measure relative fishing power. The magnitude of the skipper/crew experience effect was weaker than the technical effect of the vessel and/or its gear. Introduction et invasion de l'algue tropicale Caulerpa taxifolia en Méditerranée nord-occidentale Auteur(s) : Meinesz, A Hesse, B Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The tropical alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh has been displayed over the last fifteen years in tropical aquaria at the Oceanographic Museum, Monaco. Its accidental introduction into the natural environment dates from 1984. It developed first in the sea immediately below the museum, and resisted winter temperatures of 11 to 13-degrees-C. Gradually the population spread over all types of substrate, including rock, sand and mud, and over a wide range of depth, 3 to 35 m, on this relatively exposed site. In summer 1990 we became aware of its presence both to the east and to the west of Monaco. To the east, it now occurs on the whole of the eastern side of Cap Martin (3 km from Monaco) and is spreading over the west face. To the west we have observed it 150 km from Monaco near Toulon. In those sites which it colonized three years ago, its coverage now reaches 100 % over extensive areas in depths between 5 and 25 m. Areas supporting stands of Cymodocea nodosa and Posidonia oceanica are covered by fronds of C. taxifolia, which measure up to 45 cm in length. The development characteristics of the species in the Mediterranean, such as population density and frond length, are different from those in its native tropical areas. The rapid spreading of this alga is probably due both to sexual reproduction and to efficient vegetative reproduction. At the rate of spreading observed at present, further rapid extension of its range is to be feared. Moreover, wherever it becomes established, it considerably modifies the vegetal communities in the infralittoral zone. This species, like most of those in the genus Caulerpa, contains the toxin, caulerpenyn, which may play a role against other organisms such as grazers, epiphytes and competitors. This alga will be eaten only by certain animals such as the Mediterranean bream or saupe, Sarpa salpa. The toxin accumulated by fish which eat Caulerpa can render them unsuitable for human consumption, as their ingestion produces symptoms similar to those of Ciguatera poisoning. Never has a species so potentially harmful to the marine population been introduced into the Mediterranean. This biological pollution raises the major international problem of direct discharge of water having passed through aquaria or mariculture installations containing exotic species. As importing exotic marine species becomes technically easier, the lack of regulation risks further similar accidents concerning not only algae, but also metazoa and micro-organisms. Section III – Sports Training Sprint Performance Changes and Determinants in Afro-‐‑ Caribbean Adolescents Between 13 and 15 Years Old Auteur(s) : Babel Copaver, K Hertogh, C Hue, O Auteurs secondaires : Adaptations au Climat Tropical, Exercice et Santé (ACTES) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience Afro-‐‑ Caribbean sprinters often reach high performance levels at an early age. Adolescence is a time of morphological and physiological changes. This study was designed to analyze the evolution in parameters of short sprint performance during adolescence in Afro-‐‑ Caribbean boys, especially the stride number/body height ratio (SN/BH), which is at the interface of technical and morphological factors. Seventy-‐‑ one 13-‐‑ year-‐‑ old boys performed vertical jumps and short sprint races. The races were filmed with a view to determine stride variables. Anthropometric parameters were also measured. The same tests were performed two years later. Body height and SN/BH were the main predictors of sprint performance. The delta of performance was principally explained by stride length and stride number. Although deterioration in technical parameters was expected, the parameters related to body size and stride length were the main sprint performance predictors rather than explosive force. These results could be useful in developing tests to detect sprint potential in youth. Journal of Human Kinetics hal-01163933 https://hal.univ-antilles.fr/hal-01163933 | Partager |
Les peches maritimes : complexes biogeographiques de production et provinces halieutiques Auteur(s) : Rass, Théodore S. Carre, François Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The first part describes the evolution of the world sea fisheries from 1950 to 1977 and their present state : a decline of the growing rate of the catches, their biological structure and their distribution in the oceans according to the depth, the distance from the continent and the latitude. Then the biogeographical fishery complexes are defined, being characterized by assemblages of commercially valuable and actually caught species. These complexes are arranged according to the latitude with sometimes longitudinal subdivisions. At last with technical and economical criteria, such as the yield of the fisheries, the finality of the catches and the conditions of the exploitation which add themselves to the biogeographical complexes, the authors attempt to single out geographical fishing provinces. Floating cages as an experimental tool for shrimp culture studies: first attempts to check their reliability Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Castex, Mathieu Wabete, Nelly Lemaire, Pierrette Brun, Pierre Éditeur(s) : Poster présenté au colloque Carribean & Latin American Aquaculture 2007, 6 - 9 novembre 2007, San Juan, Puerto Rico Résumé : The first aim of this study was to evaluate on a technical basis the rearing of shrimps in floating cages set up in earthen ponds. Shrimps reared in and outside the cages presented comparable growths and survival rates. Then it was concluded that shrimp culture in floating cages did not present zootechnical biases comparing to pond culture. The second objective of this study was to assess the present method as a statistical point of view. We found that for expected differences of 20% to the control mean, 3 and 6 floating cages per treatment will be reasonable to determined statistical differences for growth parameters and survival. Furthermore, we showed a significant pond effect as regard as survival and growth between both sets of cages. This results illustrated the within farm variability among the ponds, and confirmed that specific characteristics of each ponds from a same farm make difficult to use them as experimental unit. The study demonstrates that floating cages rearing is an economical, powerful, and sensitive experimental tool for shrimp culture studies specifically undertaken under close to semi-intensive production conditions. Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can be used in technical mixtures (TMs) for use in food packaging of paper and board, and PFAS have been detected in human serum and umbilical cord blood. The specific structures of the PFAS in TMs are often unknown, but polyfluorinated alkyl phosphate esters (PAPs) have been characterized in TMs, food packaging, and in food. PAPs can be metabolized into fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs). Some PFAS have endocrine activities, highlighting the need to investigate these effects. Herein, we studied the endocrine activity of less characterized PFAS, including short-chain PFCAs and FTOHs, PAPs, and TMs of unknown chemical composition. Long-chain PFCAs were also included. We applied seven assays covering effects on estrogen, glucocorticoid, androgen, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) activity, as well as steroidogenesis in vitro and ex vivo. In general, PAPs, FTOHs, TMs, and long-chain PFCAs showed estrogenic activity through receptor activation and/or increasing 17β-estradiol levels. Furthermore, short- and long-chain PFCAs activated PPARα and PPARγ. Collectively, this means that (i) PAPs, FTOHs, and PFCAs exhibit endocrine activity through distinct and sometimes different mechanisms, (ii) two out of three tested TMs exhibited estrogenic activity, and (iii) short-chain FTOHs showed estrogenic activity and short-chain PFCAs generally activate both PPARα and PPARγ with similar potency and efficacy as long-chain PFCAs. In conclusion, several new and divergent toxicological targets were identified for different groups of PFAS. © 2016 American Society of Andrology and European Academy of Andrology Andrology hal-01367144 https://hal-univ-rennes1.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01367144 DOI : 10.1111/andr.12190 PUBMED : 27152447 | Partager |

Quelque contribution à l'optimisation de constellations de satellites Auteur(s) : Enguerran, Grandchamp Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse - INPT Joseph Noailles Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Half-way between optimization and astronautic, this research study deals with satellites constel- lations design problems. In order to find the required number of satellites and to correctly set their position, such are the technical challenges of this thesis. To minimise the cost and reduce the time such are the economical challenges the space industries are confronted in a daily manner. The major difficulties of these problems are the size and the characteristics of the search space The irregularity of the criterions The mathematical and physical heterogeneity of parameters forbids the use of classical algorithms The evaluation of a solution, which uses a time consuming evalua- tion without returning pertinent information about the good or bad properties of the constellations, forbid a massive exploration of the search space. From this constatation and several preliminary studies a new approach is born. Based on a better use of the simulation and on a simplification of the criterions, the algorithm is composed of several levels and uses different optimization techniques it integrates a knowledge database on the orbits and a numerical optimization process both orchestrated by a metaheuristic algorithm. This new approach tries to bypass the main drawbacks of the field with a decomposition of the problem.
Marine nematodes belonging to the Stilbonematidae (Desmodoridae) family are described as living in obligatory association with sulfur-oxidizing chemoautotrophic ectosymbionts. The symbiotic bacteria carrying out this chemosynthesis should contain elemental sulfur in periplasmic granules as sulfur granules of chemoautotrophic endosymbionts described in various marine invertebrates. Results. Based on TEM analyses, extracellular bacteria surrounding Eubostrichus dianae possess these spherical periplasmic granules. Few investigative techniques can be used to identify elemental sulfur S8 such as EDXS (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) and EELS (electron energy loss spectroscopy) associated with cryo-fixation of the sample to avoid sulfur loss. These techniques are time consuming, expensive and require technical skills. Raman microspectrometry applied to the analysis of E. dianae allowed us to detect elemental sulfur S8 and confirmed the location of these sulfur clusters in the bacterial coat. In the same way, Raman spectrometry was positively applied to the endosymbiotic bivalve Codakia orbicularis, suggesting that this technique can be used to characterize sulfur in ecto- as well as in endo-symbiotic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Conclusions. As Raman spectrometry can be used on living organisms (without preliminary fixation) without sample damage and preserving the molecular structure of the sulfur (denatured during chemical fixation) it represents a very well-adapted investigative tool for biologists. This technique therefore permits us to detect quickly and easily (in a few seconds and on entire living animals) the presence of sulfur compounds in the symbiotic nematode. Evaluation of the bioeconomic sustainability of multi-species multi-fleet fisheries under a wide range of policy options using ISIS-Fish Auteur(s) : Pelletier, Dominique Mahevas, Stephanie Drouineau, Hilaire Vermard, Youen Thebaud, Olivier Guyader, Olivier Poussind, Benjamin Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : In order to provide reliable scientific advice and support for fisheries management, it is necessary to evaluate the biological and economic sustainability of complex fisheries, such as multi-species multi-fleet fisheries. Existing policy-screening modelling tools are not fully suitable in this purpose due to either an over-simplified description of population dynamics, or due to the lack of consideration of economic aspects. In this paper, we present a package that enables quantitative bioeconomic assessment of management scenarios. Population dynamics is described through spatially- and seasonally-explicit models. Exploitation dynamics is characterized by several fishing activities with specific spatial and seasonal features, and practiced by several kinds of vessels with specific technical characteristics. Exploitation costs and revenues are considered at several levels: the fishing trip, the fishing unit (vessel and crew), and the vessel owner. The model is generic and can be used for different types of fisheries. A database is attached to the software for the storage and updating of information for each fishery. This includes the specification of model dimensions and of the parameters describing populations and exploitation. Several model assumptions regarding either population or exploitation may be adapted to suit a specific fishery. Both policies and corresponding fishers' response may be interactively specified through JAVA (TM) scripts. This version of ISIS-Fish allows for the calculation of biological and economic consequences of a range of policies, including conventional ones like catch and effort controls, and alternative policies such as marine protected areas. To facilitate policy-screening in a high-dimension parameter space, the software includes features, like interfaces for sensitivity analysis and simulation queues. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
