Approche empirique de la pecherie d'espadon (Xiphias gladius) dans l'ocean Indien et modelisation des deplacements des poissons dans le paysage oceanique tropical Auteur(s) : Guyomard, David Éditeur(s) : Ecole Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Rennes Résumé : Long-line fishing has been growing on the island of La Réunion since the beginning of the 1990s. The target species is the swordfish (Xiphias gladius), fished mainly in the tropical waters surrounding the island between longitudes 45 degree E and 60 degree E, and latitudes 17 degree S and 27 degree S. From 1998 to 2000, a finalised research programme enabled the collection of precise data concerning the lines' positions and the parameters of the fishing efforts: 3,602 nettings were thus informed by the catches (in numbers of individuals caught) and 12 descriptive variables of the effort. In parallel with this collection effort, satellite maps that described the ocean's landscape of this region of the Indian Ocean exploited by La Réunion's fisheries were made available to sailors and scientists. Extractions from these environmental variables were made at the fishing lines' positions, which allowed us to propose 20 variables describing the environmental conditions of swordfish catches applied to the nettings. In an early part of this study, after a descriptive analysis and a first selection of the variables, we used several GAM (Generalised Additive Models) to model the respective effects of effort and environmental variables on the variability of swordfish catches. We thus highlighted the predominance of factors linked to fishermen (fishing effort) on oceanographic factors in the explanation of this variability. Following these results, a summary on the biology and ecology of the swordfish was proposed in order to draw up hypotheses on the characteristics of this species' population in the Indian Ocean. The aspects linked to the individual behaviour and movements of the population were particularly highlighted. In a latter part of this study and in order to complete the empirical approach by an exploratory constructivist approach, we proposed a modelling tool in order to simulate the possible movements of individuals within the oceanic landscape described by the available satellite maps. After reading in the literature about the various forms of modelling the movements of the large pelagics, we developed an original computer modelling architecture of the multi-agent type that made it possible to manipulate in a dynamic way the satellite maps (and derived products), the individual movements of "animats" whose behaviours were based on this environmental information, and agents that clarify the process of long-line fishing in a geographical way. The computer model that was implemented (MUFINS, for MUlti-Fish INdian ocean Simulator) was next used by calibrating the behaviour of the animats on the real data originally from the analysis of commercial catches proposed in the first part, using robust techniques based on fuzzy logic. The results of the simulations were compared, on the one hand, with the large-scale hypotheses of movement proposed in the first part, and, on the other hand, to swordfish catches both real and corrected for the effect of the fishing effort modelled by the GAM models. Even if the results of these simulations in this study do not allow for proposing convincing interpretations of the underlying processes, the MUFINS tool showed its ability to address questions associated with the swordfish's behaviour in the tropical oceanic landscape and to the effects of scale transfers between the individual level and the collective level. We now envisage its use in a more operational framework, as an interface for dialogue between fishermen and scientists with a goal of sustainable management of the resource. Sea Surface Salinity Observations from Space with the SMOS Satellite: A New Means to Monitor the Marine Branch of the Water Cycle Auteur(s) : Reul, Nicolas Fournier, Severine Boutin, Jacqueline Hernandez, Olga Maes, Christophe Chapron, Bertrand Alory, Gael Quilfen, Yves Éditeur(s) : Springer Résumé : While it is well known that the ocean is one of the most important component of the climate system, with a heat capacity 1,100 times greater than the atmosphere, the ocean is also the primary reservoir for freshwater transport to the atmosphere and largest component of the global water cycle. Two new satellite sensors, the ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and the NASA Aquarius SAC-D missions, are now providing the first space-borne measurements of the sea surface salinity (SSS). In this paper, we present examples demonstrating how SMOS-derived SSS data are being used to better characterize key land–ocean and atmosphere–ocean interaction processes that occur within the marine hydrological cycle. In particular, SMOS with its ocean mapping capability provides observations across the world’s largest tropical ocean fresh pool regions, and we discuss from intraseasonal to interannual precipitation impacts as well as large-scale river runoff from the Amazon–Orinoco and Congo rivers and its offshore advection. Synergistic multi-satellite analyses of these new surface salinity data sets combined with sea surface temperature, dynamical height and currents from altimetry, surface wind, ocean color, rainfall estimates, and in situ observations are shown to yield new freshwater budget insight. Finally, SSS observations from the SMOS and Aquarius/SAC-D sensors are combined to examine the response of the upper ocean to tropical cyclone passage including the potential role that a freshwater-induced upper ocean barrier layer may play in modulating surface cooling and enthalpy flux in tropical cyclone track regions. Water vapour quantification using GPS and contribution to the Cevenols events forecasts ; Quantification de la vapeur d'eau atmosphérique par GPS et apport à la prévision des événements cévenols Auteur(s) : Boniface, Karen Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Université Montpellier II - Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc Jean Chéry, Frédéric Masson Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Water vapour is highly variable in the atmosphere with concentration reaching saturation in the tropics and with dry areas over elevated continental region. Good knowledge of the amount of integrated water vapour in the air is necessary to predict phase changes and in particular precipitation. Water vapour variability measurements are still insufficient with standard observing systems. Moreover accurate GPS antenna positioning is affected by the refractivity index variation in the troposphere. Consequently, vertical positioning component estimation is difficult. This variation is directly linked to distribution of variables such as pressure, temperature and humidity along the path between satellite and receiver. Here we study more specifically heavy rains et notably Cevenols events. This thesis work consists to check the GPS measurement validity to quantify water vapour in comparison with measurements from radiosoundings and meteorological model outputs. GPS observations and flux surface information have been analysed to see if water vapour quantification by GPS allowed characterising heavy rain events (cumulative rainfall amount greater than 150 mm). Then, we tested the GPS data assimilation impact on cumulative precipitation forecasts using the high resolution Meteo France AROME model (2.5 km). Finally the quality and the contribution of GPS measurement on sea is evaluated for water vapour measurement. This study has been realised in the framework of VAPIMED experiment.
Classical methods for satellite image analysis are inadequate for the current bulky data flow. Thus, automate the interpretation of such images becomes crucial for the analysis and management of phenomena changing in time and space, observable by satellite. Thus, this work aims at automating land cover cartography from satellite images, by expressive and easily interpretable mechanism, and by explicitly taking into account structural aspects of geographic information. It is part of the object-based image analysis framework, and assumes that it is possible to extract useful contextual knowledge from maps. Thus, a supervised parameterization methods of a segmentation algorithm is proposed. Secondly, a supervised classification of geographical objects is presented. It combines machine learning by inductive logic programming and the multi-class rule set intersection approach. These approaches are applied to the French Guiana coastline cartography. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the segmentation parameterization, but also its variability as a function of the reference map classes and of the input data. Yet, methodological developments allow to consider an operational implementation of such an approach. The results of the object supervised classification show that it is possible to induce expressive classification rules that convey consistent and structural information in a given application context and lead to reliable predictions, with overall accuracy and Kappa values equal to, respectively, 84,6% and 0,7. In conclusion, this work contributes to the automation of the dynamic cartography from remotely sensed images and proposes original and promising perpectives http://www.theses.fr/2013AGUY0671/document | Partager |
Determining the present-day kinematics of the Idrija fault (Slovenia) from airborne LiDAR topography Auteur(s) : Moulin, Adrien Benedetti, Lucilla Gosar, Andrej Rupnik, Petra jamsek Rizza, Magali Bourles, Didier Ritz, Jean-François Auteurs secondaires : Centre européen de recherche et d'enseignement de géosciences de l'environnement (CEREGE) ; Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) - Aix Marseille Université (AMU) - Collège de France (CdF) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, Ljubljana Geological Survey of Slovenia, Ljubljana Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Earth Observatory of Singapore Risques ; Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Elsevier Résumé : International audience Located in central Europe at the junction of the Southern Alps and the Dinarides, the ≈ 100 km long Idrija fault, striking N310 and dipping ≈ 80°NE is often considered as the potential source of the historical 1511 earthquake (estimated macroseismic magnitude: Mm 6.8). Using 1/25,000 to 1/5000 topographical maps, satellite images (SPOT5), 12.5 m illuminated DEM and airborne LiDAR data-derived 1-m-DEM, we examined in detail the Idrija fault trace along a 20-km-long swath in the central portion of the fault. Combining topographic and remote sensing data allows characterizing the recent activity along the Idrija fault and estimating its cumulative displacement along strike.Between Tolmin and Godovič, the fault trace is mostly linear but appears divided into three disconnected segments of 11–20-km-long. Morphological evidences such as offset streams and ridges and major drainage abandonments suggest ongoing movement. At three sites, field observations and LiDAR-DEM analysis allow measuring cumulative dextral offsets comprised between 35 and 65 m. We found two larger offsets of ≈ 140 m and ≈ 360 m at the southeasternmost site. The vertical component is significant and revealed by a rake ranging from 0 to 33°. The derived N303–N310 striking slip-vector is in agreement with the motion along this fault as suggested by the geodesy. Assuming that the smallest measured offsets have been recorded after the last glacial maximum (LGM, about 20 ka ago), the minimum slip-rate for the Idrija fault is about 1.5 mm/yr over this period of time. The SMOS Mission: New Tool for Monitoring Key Elements of the Global Water Cycle Auteur(s) : Kerr, Yann H. Waldteufel, Philippe Wigneron, Jean-pierre Delwart, Steven Cabot, Francois Boutin, Jacqueline Escorihuela, Maria-jose Font, Jordi Éditeur(s) : IEEE Résumé : It is now well understood that data on soil moisture and sea surface salinity (SSS) are required to improve meteorological and climate predictions. These two quantities are not yet available globally or with adequate temporal or spatial sampling. It is recognized that a spaceborne L-band radiometer with a suitable antenna is the most promising way of fulfilling this gap. With these scientific objectives and technical solution at the heart of a proposed mission concept the European Space Agency (ESA) selected the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission as its second Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission. The development of the SMOS mission was led by ESA in collaboration with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France and the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnologico Industrial (CDTI) in Spain. SMOS carries a single payload, an L-Band 2-D interferometric radiometer operating in the 1400-1427-MHz protected band [1]. The instrument receives the radiation emitted from Earth's surface, which can then be related to the moisture content in the first few centimeters of soil over land, and to salinity in the surface waters of the oceans. SMOS will achieve an unprecedented maximum spatial resolution of 50 km at L-band over land (43 km on average over the field of view), providing multiangular dual polarized (or fully polarized) brightness temperatures over the globe. SMOS has a revisit time of less than 3 days so as to retrieve soil moisture and ocean salinity data, meeting the mission's science objectives. The caveat in relation to its sampling requirements is that SMOS will have a somewhat reduced sensitivity when compared to conventional radiometers. The SMOS satellite was launched successfully on November 2, 2009. Détection satellitaire et modélisation opérationnelle de la production végétale non-fixée dans la bande côtière bretonne ; Remote sensing and operationnal modelling of non-fixed algal production on the French Brittany coastal shelf Auteur(s) : Penard, Cédric Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The negative impact of the man on the environment unquestionably increases. The coastal environment as a whole is the maritime environment which is the most exposed to man-made eutrophication. For instance, nitrate loads to coastal waters off Brittany (France) have increased 10 times (from 3 to s 30mg L-1NO3) during the four last decades. Eutrophication of this coastal zone is now a recurrent problem, more and more worrying. This eutrophication exhibits two main forms : " green tides ", which are caused by local proliferations and stranding of green macro-algae (particularly the Ulva species) in nitrogen-enriched areas ; phytoplanktonic blooms, which are responsible for coloured water events, toxic species can be present (Pseudo-Nitzschia, Alexandrium, Dinophysis), and induce banning of shellfish consumption. The objectives of this study are to assess the respective role of various rivers (especially the Loire and the Vilaine) in the eutrophication of the Brittany shelf ecosystem and test the impact of nitrogen enrichment in the triggering of Pseudo-Nitzchia toxicity. For these purposes, a coupled hydrodynamical/ biogeochemical 3D model has been developed and validated against past measured time-series and satellite images. After a brief analysis of primary production over the Brittany shelf under different conditions, we show a description of the real time adaptation of this model. Daily results are currently presented in real time on www.previmer.org web site. The inability of the model to correctly simulate near shore phytoplankton is worsened in this model by the fact that the turbidity field used is a climatological one, made by satellite images averaged on a decadal basis. First, near shore pixels of satellite images are scarcely reliable, secondly a climatological mean cannot represent the sudden bursts or drops of the real turbidity, highly dependent on the actual sea-state : this can explain also why the model at this moment fails to reproduce a sudden bloom occurring in a short period of sunny and calm weather. The simulated Pseudo-Nitzschia biomass and induced risk of toxicity in the water column cannot really be validated offshore, because monitoring measurements are available only near the coast, and deal only with toxicity in benthic filter feeders. To get temporarily rid of that problem, an interesting improvement would be to add to the operational model the bio-accumulation of toxin in the shellfishes : simulated concentrations in shellfish fresh would become directly comparable with usual measurements of the monitoring networks. Our model points out the important impact of Loire river loads on the primary production on the western and southern Brittany. This result is crucial for administrations in charge of reducing the terrestrial loadings responsible for eutrophication, because it can delay reduction programs on small tributaries until the main input from the Loire has been significantly reduced. A question arises, about the reliability of the haline stratification in the model, because the horizontal extent of the Loire plume will be enhanced by a stronger stratification. ; MINES ParisTech - École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Taylor & Francis: STM, Behavioural Science and Public Health Titles Résumé : International audience Measurements of daily means of surface solar irradiance made at four ground stations in French Guiana are compared to estimates from the HelioClim-3 database produced by the Heliosat-2 method applied to Meteosat satellite images. The bias ranges from 12 W m−2 (6% of the mean of measurements) to 23 W m−2 (12%), depending on the stations. The root mean square difference ranges between 23 W m−2 (11%) and 35 W m−2 (18%). The correlation coefficient (r) is close to 0.9. Better results are observed during the rainy season than during the dry season. Uncertainties are mainly due to the presence of clouds, large viewing angles of the Meteosat satellite, and limitations of the atmospheric transmittance model under the tropical atmospheric conditions. It is concluded that the Heliosat-2 method provides new knowledge about solar radiation in French Guiana. Surveillance maritime par analyse d'images satellitaires optiques panchromatiques ; Maritime surveillance using panchromatic optical satellite images Auteur(s) : Proia, Nadia Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Université des Antilles-Guyane Jacky Desachy Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : The research presented in this thesis aims at determining the possibility of partial or total automatic ship detection in High Resolution optical satellite images. At first, we expose the industrial context of our study, which fixes the constraints in terms of performances and processing time. Then, we present the available satellite data for our study (SPOT 5 panchromatic images of 5m per pixel resolution). Then we detail our approach for ship detection : the first stage is a pre-detection of targets that gives us candidates. The second stage is a precise segmentation of each candidate and the third stage is a classification of candidates. Our pre-detection method is based on the Bayesian decision theory. This pre-detection supplies a set of regions of interests (ROI). Among them, we have ships, but also false alarms due to clouds and to crests of waves. The purpose of the following stage is to eliminate the false alarms and to characterize the pre-detected ships. Then, we detail the method used to segment candidates. It uses active contours and also uses the Bayesian decision theory. After a brief description of the characteristics extracted for the classication of ships, we present the classifier that we used. We complete the ship characterization by presenting two methods of wave ship detection. The first approach uses active contours and the second is based on an a contrario approach. We compare the results of these two approaches. To complete the study and replace it in the industrial and operational context, we present experiments of the complete algorithm on complete images to estimate the performances and the processing time of the whole method.
Les fonds marins vus de l'espace Auteur(s) : Loubersac, Lionel Éditeur(s) : Neidine editeurs Résumé : This text is focused on the popularization of the general public, edited in a magazine connected to the sea. It explicits, in first part, all the factors which make that the surface of the sea is not horizontal. In second part are introduced the principles of the satellite altimetry which allows to measure the slope of the surface of the sea which, because of the variations of Earth' attraction from a point to an other, is directly connected to the topography of the bottom of the oceans. After a historical review of the various altimeter satellite missions launched from the beginning of 1970s to our days, the text discusses the applications allowed by the topographic images of the bottom of seas and the progress that these spatial technologies have offered, regarding the knowledge of the world oceanic domain. Spatial and temporal coherence between Amazon River discharge, salinity, and light absorption by colored organic carbon in western tropical Atlantic surface waters Auteur(s) : Salisbury, J. Vandemark, D. Campbell, J. Hunt, C. Wisser, D. Reul, Nicolas Chapron, Bertrand Éditeur(s) : Amer Geophysical Union Résumé : The temporal evolution and spatial distribution of surface salinity and colored detrital matter (cdm) were evaluated within and adjacent to the Amazon River Plume. Study objectives were as follows: first, to document the spatial coherence between Amazon discharge, salinity, cdm, and the nature of the salinity-cdm relationship; second, to document the temporal and spatial variability of cdm along the trajectory of the low-salinity Amazon Plume, and third, to explore the departure of cdm from conservative mixing behavior along the plume trajectory into the open ocean. Time series (2003-2007) of surface salinity estimated using the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System and corresponding satellite cdm absorption (acdm) data documented a plume of freshened, colored water emanating from the Amazon. Salinity and acdm were generally coherent, but there were regions in which spatial patterns of salinity and acdm did not coincide. Salinity was oppositely phased with discharge, whereas acdm was in phase but lagged discharge and typically remained high after maximum discharge. Along the river plume trajectory, acdm was inversely correlated with salinity, yet there was considerable deviation from conservative mixing behavior during all seasons. Positive anomalies in a linear relationship between salinity and acdm corresponded to areas of enhanced satellite-retrieved net primary productivity, suggesting the importance of phytoplankton biomass or its subsequent remineralization as a source of cdm. Negative anomalies tended to predominate at the distal sections of the plume trajectories, an observation consistent with the process of photo-oxidation of cdm over observed time scales of days to weeks. We describe and apply methods to interpret the gravity changes in terms of local hydrological processes and vertical ground motions. The effect of land water is computed from local rainfall data and a model of rain accumulation and discharge in the ground. The effect of the vertical motions of the ground is estimated using time-series of permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) stations and the theoretical gravity to height ratio of −2 μGal cm−1. Unexpectedly, Morakot typhoon (2009 August), the strongest typhoon in Taiwan in 50 yr, was responsible for the highest gravity changes. Morakot triggered numerous large landslides and debris flow deposits. Their thicknesses are estimated from the gravity changes (up to ∼280 μGal) along with field observations and satellite images. Ocean remote sensing data integration - examples and outlook Auteur(s) : Chapron, Bertrand Bingham, A Collard, Fabrice Donlon, Craig Johannessen, Johnny A. Piolle, Jean-francois Reul, Nicolas Éditeur(s) : ESA Publication Résumé : Satellite remote sensing has emerged as an essential and necessary observing system to acquire global information about the state of the ocean. Complemented with in situ observing networks, the ultimate goals are to be able to make accurate estimates of selected key sets of geophysical variables, with the intention of either making operational predictions across time and spatial boundaries, or advancing fundamental knowledge through development of empirical relationships and theoretical models. For satellite oceanography, improvements are then constantly being sought in our understandings of the geophysical processes, the sensor physics, the electromagnetic and microwave properties and interactions at the complex air-sea interface. Challenges appear as unlimited as the variety of sea surface dynamics and boundary layer meteorological conditions with their broad range of spatial and temporal scales across the globe. To face these challenges, numerous efforts took places over the passed decade to build an ever-increasing quality, quantity, duration and integration of ocean observations. In parallel, simulation capabilities largely improved. All these efforts are then all critically calling for improved methodologies to better structure the wealth of information that is made readily accessible. This latter aspect is a very demanding new component for future multidisciplinary scientific research. Major innovations to consolidate sensor data repositories, to automate tailored queries, to extract, reveal and quantify relationships will then closely associate computer science developments and applied statistics with comprehensive theoretical and experimental thematic studies. Oceanic survival and movements of wild and captive-reared immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Pelletier, Dominique Roos, David Ciccione, Stéphane Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The ability of captive-reared turtles to survive in the wild is not precisely known, nor are movements of immature turtles in the open ocean. To provide information on these issues, a satellite tracking experiment was conducted in the western Indian Ocean to monitor oceanic movements of immature green turtles. Two wild turtles and four captive-reared individuals were tracked. The latter had been displaced after birth from nesting sites to a distant rearing site. Wild turtles survived after release, but did not move far away from release site. We hypothesize that this resident behaviour may be explained by stage-specific habitat requirements. Captive-reared turtles survived after release and migrated over thousands of kilometres. Among these, the oldest immature turtles retrieved the foraging sites of their native population, with movement patterns similar to those displayed by adults. Observed movements may be linked to hydrographic conditions such as general oceanic circulation, sea temperature and thermal fronts. Merging SeaWiFS and MODIS/Aqua Ocean Color Data in North and Equatorial Atlantic Using Weighted Averaging and Objective Analysis Auteur(s) : Pottier, C Garcon, V Larnicol, G Sudre, J Schaeffer, P Le Traon, Pierre-yves Éditeur(s) : IEEE Résumé : Two approaches of ocean color data merging were tested and compared in the North and Equatorial Atlantic Basin: the weighted averaging and the objective analysis. The datasets used were the daily level-3 binned data of chlorophyll-a from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on the Aqua satellite over the year 2003, which is the first common full year of operation. Since they represent input for both approaches, matchups between the satellite and the in situ data from the SeaWiFS Bio-optical Archive and Storage System and the Atlantic Meridional Transect were first studied to compute a spatial map of the root mean-square error and of the bias. Because of the log distribution of the chlorophyll fields, each approach was applied to untransformed and log-transformed values. The application of the weighted averaging to log-transformed values does not show significant differences in comparison to its application to untransformed values. This is not the case, however, for the objective analysis that gives better results when applied to logtransformed values. Both approaches give combined chlorophyll data of equivalent quality, although the objective analysis could be improved with a better statistical characterization of noise and signal covariance. The main advantage of the objective analysis is its ability to interpolate in space (and time) by taking into account the characteristic scales of chlorophyll-a. As a result, the spatial coverage of the combined data is at least twice as large in the case of objective analysis than weighted averaging. Thematic mapping of reefs by processing of simulated SPOT satellite data : application to the Trochus niloticus biotope on Tetembia reef (New Caledonia) Auteur(s) : Bour, W Loubersac, Lionel Rual, P Éditeur(s) : Inter-research Résumé : Exploitation of Trochus niloticus is important for Pacific islanders. The shell yields valuable mother of pearl of wich 2.000 tons were exported from New Caledonia in 1978. Knowledge of the exploitable stock requires a good estimate of the surface area occupied by this gastropod which colonises dead coral reefs. Because trochus environments in New Caledonia are very extensive and access is difficult, synoptic methods of estimation are called for. High resolution remote sensing appears to be a particularly suitable method. Simulation of images to be obtained from the French SPOT satellite was carried out in New Caledonia in decemlber 1983. This paper deals with the method used to process the digital high resolution images that will be produced by SPOT. Results are presented as thematic maps of the main reef environment types, with their respective surface areas. Among hard reef bottom covers, the trochus environment was finely analysed and areas identified were compared with ground truth observations and with areial photograph interpretation. The potential usefulness of high resolution SPOT images is confirmed for thematic mapping and evaluation of shallow living reef resources. Tropical instability waves in the atlantic-ocean - a contributor to biological processes Auteur(s) : Morliere, A Lebouteiller, A Citeau, J Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : Long tropical instability waves are described at around 3-4 degrees N based on results of a simulation performed with a general circulation model for the Atlantic Ocean. This description is in agreement with earlier observations of organized undulations of the summer thermal front associated with anti-cyclonic eddies propagating westward at 30-40 km/day along 3-4 degrees N from 10 to 40 degrees W through the Atlantic basin. However, the simulation indicated the presence of long waves in early boreal winter. In this respect, satellite observations during short cold events in winter show thermal front undulations similar to those associated with long wave propagations. The simulation clearly demonstrated large vertical movements between the surface and a depth of 70 m, associated with anti-cyclonic eddies at around 3 degrees N. These vertical movements could commonly reach the thermocline in the central part of the Atlantic basin (10-20 degrees W). In this region, long instability waves could subsequently affect biological production by ''eddy pumping''. During the PIRAL cruise at 4 degrees N-20 degrees W in June 1986, remarkably high chlorophyll concentrations (the highest values in our data bank for the equatorial Atlantic and typical of a very productive zone) were associated with currents similar to those of an anticyclonic eddy and characterized by a surface temperature distribution typical of the long instability wave pattern. These high chlorophyll concentrations may have resulted from ''eddy pumping'' and/or strong meridian advection since each of these mechanisms is associated with long instability waves.
