The marginal SaoPaulo plateau, comparaison with the southern angolan margin Auteur(s) : Mascle, Jean Renard, Vincent Éditeur(s) : Academia Brasileira de Ciencias Résumé : During the Geobrésil cruise of the R. V. Jean Charcot (1973) several marine geophysical lines, including bathymetry, magnetism, continuous seismic as well as sonobuoy profiles have been run across a deep marginal plateau extending on the southeastern Brazilian margin and known as the Sao Paulo Plateau. These data indicate the presence of a thick sedimentary cover (more than 4s DTT) on the upper slope and up to 3s DTT thick on the lower slope and rise. The entire slope is highly disturbed by salt diapiric structures mostly apparent between the 2 000-3 000 bathymetriclines and comparable to the ones described in the western Mediterranean sea. The Sao Paulo scarp, bordering the deep marginal plateau to the South-West, is believed to be a discontinuous and "en échelon» structure probably related to numerous and closely spaced early fracture zones. The overal structures Of two areas - the Sao Paulo and the Angolan margin - are briefly cOmpared and Preliminary results of DSDP holes 356 and 364 suggest a similar sedimentary history, during mesozoic times, for both margins. Activité tectonique, magmatique et hydrothermale autour des triples jonctions de16°50'S-173°30'E et de l6°30'S-l76°10E dans le bassin nord fidjien (SWPacifique): Campagne HYFIFLUX Auteur(s) : Auzende, Jean-marie Halbach, P Allspach, A Becker, K Blum, N Bonnier, Olga Van Gerven, M Halbach, M Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-villars Résumé : The aim of the HYFIFLUX-SONNE 99 cruise was the geological, biological and chemical study of the 2 triple-junctions characterizing the oceanic accretion in the North Fiji Basin. Multibeam bathymetric coverage, in situ observations and sampling confirmed the existence of an active spreading ridge immediately west of the Fiji islands (WFR), and gave an evaluation of the magmatic and hydrothermal activity of the central ridge (CSR). New hydrothermal sites have been discovered and sampled. Phytoplankton dynamics in the southern New Caledonian lagoon during a southeast trade winds event Auteur(s) : Neveux, Jacques Lefebvre, Jean-pierre Le Gendre, Romain Dupouy, Cecile Gallois, Francis Courties, Claude Gerard, Philippe Fernandez, Jean-michel Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : During the Echolag cruise (13 February-8 March 2007), the effect of 16-30 knot trade winds on abundance, community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton was investigated in the southern part of the New Caledonian coral reefs and surrounding oceanic waters. In this area, the coral reefs form two horn-like structures (hereinafter referred to as 'horn reefs'), oriented south-east, and separated by a relatively deep valley. Three repeated samplings at one week intervals of a 32 station array showed that trade winds induce surface water cooling and significant enrichment of mid- and bottom waters above the reef shelf. This enrichment appeared as the result of a general rise of the oceanic thermocline and nitracline due to the combination of trade winds and tidally-generated internal waves between the horn reefs. It was accompanied by a factor of 1.5 and 2.3 mean increase for the chlorophyll concentration and picoplankton-nanoplankton cell number, respectively. From diel variations of in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence and hourly sampling, phytoplankton gross growth rate was estimated to be 1-1.35 divisions per day and was quasi balanced with phytoplankton mortality for a 24 h period. Salt tectonics and crustal tectonics along the Eastern Sardinian margin,Western Tyrrhenian : New insights from the « METYSS » cruise (June 2009) Auteur(s) : Gaullier, Virginie Lofi, Johanna Thinon, Isabelle Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire d'études des GéoEnvironnements Marins (LEGEM) ; Université de Perpignan Via Domitia (UPVD) Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) (BRGM) EGU Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience The « METYSS » cruise was carried out in June 2009 onboard the R/V « Téthys II » along the eastern Sardinian and south-eastern Corsican margins, western Tyrrhenian Sea, in order to better constrain the potential links between deformation related to either crustal tectonics or salt tectonics and sediment accumulation, especially during the Messinian and Plio-Quaternary times. We acquired 15 high-resolution seismic reflection profiles (about 1200 km in cumulative length) along the south-eastern Corsican margin, immediately north of the Bonifacio Strait and along the upper and middle parts of the eastern Sardinian margin, from the continental slope to the Cornaglia Terrace. The Tyrrhenian Sea is considered as a Neogene back-arc basin that opened during continental rifting and oceanic spreading related to the eastward migration of the Apennine subduction system from Tortonian to Pliocene times (Jolivet et al., 2006). Rifting of the Tyrrhenian Sea started first along the Eastern Sardinian margin during the Tortonian-Messinian times and therefore the series of that age should be considered as syn-rift sediments (Sartori et al., 2004). The « METYSS » seismic profiles clearly illustrate that this part of the Tyrrhenian was highly segmented during the rifting stage by N-S trending normal faults delineating ridges (e.g., Baronie Ridge) and basins (e.g., Sardinian Basin and Cornaglia Terrace), as previously described for example by Thommeret (1999) and Sartori et al. (2004). The Messinian sedimentary units and especially the « Upper Unit » (UU, Lofi et al., this congress, corresponding to the « Upper Evaporites » in the previous literature) are, without any doubt, of syn-rift age, as they display a fan-shaped stratal geometry. The Mobile Unit (MU, Lofi et al., this congress), i.e. the Messinian halite, is clearly imaged in the study area and its spatial repartition can be outlined. The highly-variable thickness of the confined salt basins could be due to the initial basin geometry (i.e. before the Messinian salinity Crisis) or to the syn-rift character of the deposition. Southeastward of the study area, in the vicinity of the Cornaglia Seamount, salt tectonics appears surprisingly vigorous. More surprisingly, several normal faults seem to have remained active in recent times, if not even at present time. Fault slip has been recorded by bathymetric scarps and associated footwall debris flows interfingered within the Plio-Quaternary sequence, even though the eastern Sardinian margin is usually considered to be passive now. Moreover, some amount of tectonic inversion is visible on some normal faults that show contractional or transpressional components of late slip. In addition, this “post-rift” deformation can be illustrated within the Plio-Quaternary sequence by a regional unconformity. Consequently, numerous mass-transport deposits and channel-levees systems observed in the Plio-Quaternary cover could be partly controlled by tectonic activity. These very preliminary results require further investigations in order to better decipher the role of crustal tectonics and salt tectonics, salt-related structures being very efficient markers to discriminate between the respective contribution of gravity-driven, salt tectonics and deep-seated, crustal tectonics (Gaullier et al., 2010). Finally, we aim to precisely determine the relative vertical movements (tilting, subsidence, magmatism. . . ) and geodynamical history of the different segments of the area since 6 Ma. Nannoplankton and foraminifera biostratigraphy and microfacies of the Cretaceous to Cenozoic post-platform series (Mazagan Escarpment, Morocco) Auteur(s) : Cepek, P Hagn, H Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The paper summarizes the biostratigraphic results of eighteen dives of the French submersible Cyana at the Mazagan Escarpment (CYAMAZ cruise), based on calcareous nannoplankton and foraminifera. This paper is restricted to the study of the Early Cretaceous to Quaternary post-platform series. Most of the stratigraphical data are based on the determination of calcareous nannofossils (P. Cepek) which, however, are mostly poorly preserved and of rare occurrence. From the 170 studied subsamples 49 are barren of calcareous samples are listed according to the species epithets, separated for the Cretaceous and Tertiary. The biostratigraphy based on foraminifera and the microfacies was studied in thin-section (H. hagn). Foraminiferal microfaunas of Late Cretaceous, Paleocene, Eocene-Oligocene and Quaternary age are described and shown in Plates. The Arab-African springs follow one after the other but are not alike, soft and peaceful springs are succeeded by hot and bloodthirsty springs. One spring expels another one, but the situation s balance sheet is mixed, the future is still uncertain and the experiences are reversible. Undeniably, they didn't say their last word. New reasons of preoccupation are born, made of different nature : they are named : instability, intolerance, chaos, paralysis of the state and its institutions, threat to the women rights, minorities of all kinds, the conscience freedom and the rights to difference ; but also new reasons to hope for a better tomorrow. Africa is not at its last "spring" but the rewards remained always below expectations. The laborious Implementation of a Pan-African system of human rights and peoples was hailed, deservedly, as a major event and a "spring" far ahead of its time. The article in attached outlines all the steps and vicissitudes of this implementation rerelease the context, the end and results of the elaboration of human and people’s rights African charter which constitutes the substratum. It highlights its specificities, its originalities, the planed mechanisms and high instruments (Commission and the African Court of Human and Peoples' Rights) to ensure the application and the promotion of human and people’s rights. In many respects, the Charter innovates bravely and originally compared to its illustrious predecessors. At first in its title: it is matter of a charter and not a declaration. Then, human rights are closely connected to the people’s rights and hoisted at the same level of importance and imperativeness or more. Finally, the Charter does not only recognizes rights but it promulgates duties (to family, community, the state, Africa, the environment, etc.) and makes of the fulfillment of these a condition of enjoyment of those. Two decades backout, and only 12 cases treated (from only 24 have reached) later, in front of the Court, we can say that it is far from having reached its cruising speed and deserved so much hope placed in it.From there to throw the baby out with the bath water, hide all the benefits of a system which is far from being unworthy, there is only one step which shall exceed hardly. Recent and active deformation pattern off the easternmost Algerian margin, Western Mediterranean Sea: New evidence for contractional tectonic reactivation Auteur(s) : Kherroubi, Abdelaziz Deverchere, Jacques Yelles, Abdelkarim De Lepinay, Bernard Mercier Domzig, Anne Cattaneo, Antonio Bracene, Rabah Gaullier, Virginie Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : We describe for the first time a set of large active thrusts and folds near the foot of the easternmost Algerian margin, Western Mediterranean, from swath bathymetry and high-resolution seismic data acquired in 2005 during the Maradja2/Samra cruise. This active system resumes a previous passive margin and creates growth strata deposition on the limbs of large folds, resulting in the development of perched basins at the foot of the margin since less than similar to 1 Ma. They form a set of overlapping fault segments verging toward the Algerian basin, in a way similar to what has been observed off eastern Algiers on the rupture zone of the 2003 Mw 6.8 Boumerdes earthquake. The horizontal shortening rate across large folds is estimated to be of the order of 1 mm/yr. Although no historical earthquakes are reported here, these fault segments could have been responsible for large (M similar to 7.5) events in the past. This young tectonic system further supports the hypothesis of subduction inception of the Neogene oceanic lithosphere in the context of the Africa-Eurasia convergence. Auteur(s) : Bertrand, Jacques Guyader, Olivier Reynal, Lionel Résumé : In the French West Indies islands, the transfer of chlordecone (kepone) from treated grounds towards the marine environment has been proved since the beginning of 2000s. In 2008, a maximal residue limit (MRL) was set at 20 µg / kg wet weight in fish and seafood, and therefore intensified the concern about the risks of high human exposure to the pesticide due to the consumption of contaminated marine products. To answer this concern, several sampling cruises were carried by public authorities and by Ifremer in order to analyze the contamination of the fish fauna around the Guadeloupe island. The data collected within these surveys improved our knowledge on the characteristics of the contamination of fish fauna and allowed to assess the distribution of this contamination in relation with optional geographical plans of the marine area around the Guadeloupe island. Further, this study was completed by an assessment of the fishery activity in areas which are the more exposed to the chlordecone contamination, taking into account data from a fishery observatory which has been set up in the archipelago since 2007.
The results allow to precise two main characteristics of distribution of the contamination: its spatial and specific dimensions. About the spatial aspect, contamination of the fish fauna is centred on marine areas which are closely downstream contaminated watersheds. Concerning the marine fauna, two species groups are particularly exposed: the very coastal ones, particularly those living at or close to the mouth of rivers, and crustaceans wherever they live. Among fishes, the most contaminated species belong to many various groups which are present in the very coastal belt, more or less regularly. Lastly, this study provided orders of magnitude on the relative part of the fishery activity around the archipelagos for which the contamination is of great concern. Ascidies récoltées par le « Président Théodore Tissier » (campagne de printemps 1951) Auteur(s) : Gravier, R. Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : From February to June 1951 the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" sailed all the way to the French Caribbean, via Madeira, then to the coasts of Nova Scotia, on the banks of Newfoundland, via the Bermudas, and back to Lorient via the Azores Islands. During this cruise, an important material was sampled by A. Bourdillon, Research Attaché in the Marine Station of Endoume and invited by the Scientific and Technical Institute of Marine Fisheries. Ascidians form the greatest share of this material. They can be grouped in four batches: French Caribbean, Bermudas, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. But the French Caribbean batch and that of Newfoundland are by far the most interesting, considering the number and variety of the species they hold. From a geographic point of view, only two groups are worth being studied: 1° The French Caribbean batch which contains only tropical species, to which can be linked the Bermudas batch, islands which although located at a high latitude benefit from a subtropical hydrological regime. 2° The Newfounland batch, which has a cold character, and to which can be linked the Nova Scotia batch. Les foraminifères de la mer celtique Auteur(s) : Le Calvez, Yolande Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The study of the foraminifers contained in the samples collected by the "President-Theodore-Tissier" during its 1948 cruise enabled:1° to draw up the list of the genera and species dwelling in the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean;2° to notice that some of these species are widely distributed but that others are localized in these areas. Among them are:Quinqueloculina angulataQuinqueloculina dunkerquianaQuinqueloculina lataQuinqueloculina quadrangularisGaudryina rudisNonionella turgidaBolivina pseudo-plicataBolivina laevigataDiscorbis globularis var. anglicaDiscorbis millettiiDiscorbis nitida3° to clarify a few taxonomic points for some species;4° to classify the different stations according to the nature of the sea bed and to determine the foriminifer fauna living in each category;5° to establish the important role played by the substratum, not only because of its nature, but also because of the biocenose it is linked to. To better constrain the occurrence of large earthquakes, we have conducted two cruises in 2012 and 2013 from which five piston, gravity and box-cores were retrieved from selected sites in targeted areas that contain continuous and accurate turbidite deposition offshore eastern Taiwan. Forty-seven turbidite layers deposited between 675 BC and 2012 AD have been described in the cores with facies varying from silty clay to coarse sand. We modeled each turbidite layer using the sedimentation rate deduced from radiocarbon age measurements performed on planktonic foraminifers. Precise dating based on 210Pb–137Cs chronology provided ages for the XXth century turbidites. Coring sites' locations, biotic association within turbidites beds and seismic calibration over the instrumental period, suggest that earthquakes are the most likely triggering mechanisms of turbidity currents over the last 2700 years. Calibration of correlations between turbidites and instrumental earthquakes allowed us to determine the minimum magnitude of recorded events (Mw = 6.8) and the maximum distance between the epicenter and the slope failure. Turbidites' synchroneity between cores has been tested but results showed that this criterion cannot be used in our study area because of the high level of seismicity, i.e., a M > 6.8 earthquake recurrence interval much smaller than the uncertainty on radiocarbon ages. The excellent accuracy of dating allows correlating all the turbidites deposited since 1920 with instrumental earthquakes. For each core, we established a return time ranging between 112 and 147 years for the period pre-1900 and ~ 27 and 34 years for the period post-1900. The discrepancy between pre-1900 and post-1900 recurrence either suggests, that slope stability varies, with higher slope instability after 1900 possibly due to increased sediment delivery by rivers. Biogenic silica in the Bay of Bengal during the southwest monsoon Auteur(s) : Gupta, Gvm Sarma, Vv Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : During RV Gaveshani cruise No. 235 (August-September, 1993), particulate matter was collected from euphotic and deeper waters in the Bay of Bengal and analysed for biogenic silica (BSi), lithogenic silica (LSi) and particulate organic carbon (POC). Mean depth profiles of BSi showed a minimum in the surface waters and a maximum in the middle depths of the euphotic zone. The deepening of BSi maxima from north to south coincides with the deepening of the thermocline and thickening of the surface layer. In coastal waters, the contribution of BSi to total particulate silica was high (> 80 %); in offshore waters it was 60-70 %. BSi/POC (0.086) and LSi/POC (0.023) ratios show that particulate matter consists mostly of biogenic material, while the BSi/LSi (1.61) ratio revealed the dominance of siliceous phytoplankton in the euphotic zone. High concentrations of BSi (0.49 mu mol l(-1)) and LSi (1.89 mu mol l(-1)) in deeper waters are due to a high sedimentation rate, the resuspension of bottom sediments and the flow of large amounts of riverine siliceous material. The albacore is not always found in the same spots in the Madeiran waters: It sometimes cruises in deep waters and sometimes at the surface. In 1923, I described the Madeiran fishing techniques for both cases: for deep-sea fishing, fishermen drop their lines at depths of between 50 metres and 300 metres. [...] Auteur(s) : Belloc, Gérard Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : During the cruise of the Président-Théodore-Tissier in May-June 1936, on the West coast of Africa, our trawl caught, on several occasions, hundreds of specimens of a scombriform fish unknown to us. Its general shape and its relatively large eye remind us of the Trochurops Crumenophthalmus (Bloch) or "Coulirou des Antilles". [...] Like the Coulirou, very popular in the Caribbean, its flesh is very savoury, thus we named it "Semble-coulirou" (mock-coulirou), while awaiting a future determination. Structure sismique de la zone de subduction des Petites Antilles : implications sur les dimensions de la zone sismogène interplaque ; Seismic structure of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone : relevance for the extent of the seismogenic zone Auteur(s) : Evain, Mikael Éditeur(s) : Université Nice Sophia Antipolis Résumé : The Lesser Antilles is a case study of a very slow subduction (~2 cm/yr) of an old oceanic lithosphere (~84-100 Ma). The region presents a relatively low seismic activity, especially along the interplate contact, and the seismic hazard associated with a possible mega-thrust earthquake is still poorly known. This PhD thesis is a first step toward assessing the ability of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone to produce such a large subduction event. To do so, it aims at constraining the downdip width of the interplate's seismogenic zone. The lack of coverage of permanent seismological stations is a major limitation in the exploration of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. It is due to the presence of only small aligned islands at far distances from the potentially seismogenic interplate area. Several oceanographic cruises were therefore planned that notably allowed the repeated deployment of ocean bottom seismometers; some of them being left for a few months of background seismicity recording. This thesis specifically focuses on two sets of wide-angle seismic data acquired offshore the Dominica and Martinique islands. From their analysis 3D and 2D tomographic models were produced respectively over the forearc region and across the whole subduction complex. These models constrain the plates' seismic structure as well as their geometry. They allow the discussion of how the imaged structures affect the subduction processes and give a first estimation of the downdip width of the seimogenic zone, defined as the segment of the interplate between the backstop and the upper plate's Moho. The joint interpretation of seismic models and earthquake localizations then refine this first assessment. Epicenter distribution from height months of seismic recording shows indeed that seismicity concentrates within the inner forearc region. The strong velocity gradient that characterize its basement suggests it is denser and more rigid than the more deformable outer forearc basement. The updip limit of the seismogenic zone could then lie arcward of the backstop at the contact of the interplate and the seaward end of the inner forearc crust. At depth, interplate earthquake mechanisms are observed between 35 and 45 km depth and interpreted to have occurred at the downdip limit of the seismogenic zone. The latter could reach a depth over 10,km deeper than the contact of the upper plate's Moho with the interplate, and therefore lie within the mantle wedge. All together, these results imply a large downdip width of the seismogenic zone (~70 km) offshore the Dominica and Martinique islands. Further work is, however, needed in order to fully comprehend the ability of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone to produce a possible mega-thrust earthquake. This would necessitate the evaluation of seismic coupling at the interplate contact and the possible segmentation of the seismogenic zone, for instance, due to the subduction of oceanic ridges. Acoustic characterisation of pelagic fish aggregations around moored fish aggregating devices in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) Auteur(s) : Doray, Mathieu Josse, Erwan Gervain, Paul Reynal, Lionel Chantrel, Josselin Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Sea cruises were conducted for 57 days over 16 months to characterise pelagic fish aggregations around 2 moored fish aggregating devices (FADs) in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). Echosounder surveys run in a star pattern were used in conjunction with obliquely beamed sonar observations. An echo-integration-by-shoal algorithm was implemented to isolate pelagic fish shoals from sound scattering layers and to compute mean morphometric, positional and density parameters. Tree regressions were used to select and classify pelagic fish Target Strengths (TS), with reference to their spatial and temporal characteristics. The main type of pelagic fish aggregation was a large sub-surface aggregation. It was observed during all daytime periods within a radius of 400 m of the FAD. A smaller type of aggregation was observed closer to the surface and to the FAD in 65% of daytime periods. Large scattered fish were observed in 16% of daytime periods. At night, a medium-sized aggregation was detected in the sub-surface in 75% of night-time periods. The sizes of the fish inside the aggregations (determined from TS values) were lower in the small near-surface aggregation than in the large sub-surface aggregation. Mean packing densities of sub-surface medium fish and near-surface small fish aggregations (determined from TS and shoal acoustic density) were respectively 0.2 fish per m3 and 1.3 fish per m3. The acoustic methodology and results are discussed with reference to the characteristics and performance of the echosounder and to the spatial structure of pelagic fish aggregations around moored FADs in Martinique.
