![]() | Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information Auteur(s) : Rochet, Marie-joelle Prigent, M Bertrand, Jacques Carpentier, Andre Coppin, Franck Delpech, Jean-paul Fontenelle, G Foucher, Eric Éditeur(s) : Oxford university press Résumé : The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes. They had a greater power than survey data to detect recent changes, showing that fishers' perceptions have great potential as early warning signals. ![]() | Small-scale FADs-associated fishing techniques used in the Pacific region Auteur(s) : Chapman, L Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Over the last 16 years, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC - formerly the South Pacific Commission) has been developing and providing information on mid-water fishing techniques targeting the larger, deeper-swimming tunas that aggregate around FADs. SPC masterfishermen have conducted in-country fishing trials to test methods, such as vertical longlines, and train local fishermen in their construction and use. Vertical longline catch rates have varied considerably due to a range of reasons with no catches reported in some locations, or just sharks, to highs of over 6.5 kg /10 hooks/hour being recorded in other locations. Other methods like drop-stone, palu-ahi, and single-hook drifting lines have been developed within the region, with SPC adopting and transferring this technology to other locations. To further disseminate this information, SPC has recently published a technical manual outlining a range of mid-water fishing gears and techniques that can be used in association with FADs. An outline of the main gears and techniques with catch data where available is presented, with factors influencing catches discussed based on the findings of SPC masterfishermen over the years. ![]() | Fish aggregating devices (FADs): good or bad fishing tools? A question of scale and knowledge FOREWORD: Tahiti International Conference "Tuna Fisheries and FADs", November 2011 Auteur(s) : Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : It is estimated that fish aggregating devices (FADs) are now used for over 40% of world tropical tuna catches, making this technique a major phenomenon for high seas fisheries worldwide, and one that has experienced great expansion over the past three decades. The question of whether the FAD is a good or a bad tool for the exploitation of marine resources depends on many parameters. To respond to this question, it is necessary to distinguish different scales of exploitation (artisanal vs. industrial) and various types of FADs (anchored vs. drifting), but it is also very important to gather more data and conduct further research on this topic to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon and of its impacts. As such, twelve years after the first international conference devoted to FADs, which was held in Martinique (French West Indies), a new multi-scalar global assessment of FAD fisheries development and a review of the progress of research in this field was deemed vital. The latest international conference, "Tuna Fisheries and Fish Aggregating Devices", was held in Tahiti in November 2011, and it was an event that welcomed nearly 150 conference attendees from 40 different countries, three ocean regions, and the Mediterranean. This is an analysis of the relevant literature gathered by the author in the bibliographic database FADBASE. Then, the major issues already addressed by the scientific community are set out, and gaps and research priorities are highlighted for anchored and drifting FADs management. ![]() | Mapping habitats in a marine reserve showed how a 30-year trophic cascade altered ecosystem structure Auteur(s) : Leleu, Kevin Remy-zephir, Brice Grace, Roger Costello, Mark J. Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Sci Ltd Résumé : Time-series studies have reported trophic cascades in land, freshwater and marine environments in many geographic areas. However, the spatial extent of habitats, a key metric of ecosystem structure, has not been mapped in these studies. Marine reserves can provide experimental, before-after and inside-outside (control-impacted), situations for assessing the impact of fishing on ecosystems. We mapped seabed habitats and their associated communities (biotopes) in New Zealand's oldest marine reserve for comparison with pre-reserve maps created about 30 years previously. Areas grazed bare by sea urchins were entirely replaced in the centre of the reserve by kelp, or alga turf, an intermediate biotope between heavily grazed encrusting algae and lightly grazed kelp. Urchins declined following increased abundance and body size of spiny (rock) lobsters and fish (especially snapper) in the reserve but maintained bare rock outside. While this gradient in habitat change matched the gradient of predator abundance, it also matched the extent of reef habitat area. Thus the trophic cascade may be influenced by the effect of habitat on the abundance and behavioural interactions of urchins and their predators. Further ecosystem changes may arise should the abundance of mega-predators, such as seals, cetaceans and large sharks, increase in the region; if parasites become pathogenic; and/or when invasive species reach the reserve. No-take marine reserves provide real-world experiments that show the importance of species in food webs, and the consequences of fishing for ecosystems. Because these changes in ecosystem structure may continue, and will vary with environment, climate and species distributions, reserves need to be permanent and replicated geographically. Habitat maps should be produced for all reserves to enable ecological changes in the ecosystem to be spatially quantified. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The creation of a marine reserve in the north-western part of Martinique, located in the area of Prêcheur, has led to an economic valuation of marine and coastal ecosystems. The total economic value (TEV) has been estimated to about 58 million Euros annually, almost 12 million Euros by km². This value stands for the sum of values associated to: i) direct uses (fishing, diving, beach leisure, etc.) for almost 3 million Euros; ii) indirect uses originating from ecological services (water treatment and nutrient cycling, biomass productivity, carbon sequestration) for 200,000 Euros; and iii) non-uses associated to the existence and bequest to next generation of the natural capital without any consideration of use for about 55 million Euros. The creation of the marine reserve should lead to an increase of this value through an enhancement of ecological services of ecosystems and the non-extractive uses such as tourism and marine leisure. Auteur(s) : Le Guen, Jean-claude Chevalier, Robert Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : All considerations about halieutic stocks inevitably had to attain the recognition of relations which are established between the resource and its natural environment. These phenomenons are exposed in the first part. About consequences of human interventions, both of these aspects must be taken into account: the introduction of new species and fishing. Second part deals with the use of models in stock management. ![]() | Use of morphological characteristics to define functional groups of predatory fishes in the Celtic Sea Auteur(s) : Reecht, Yves Rochet, Marie-joelle Trenkel, Verena Jennings, S. Pinnegar, J. K. Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Résumé : An ecomorphological method was developed, with a focus on predation functions, to define functional groups in the Celtic Sea fish community. Eleven functional traits, measured for 930 individuals from 33 species, led to 11 functional groups. Membership of functional groups was linked to body size and taxonomy. For seven species, there were ontogenetic changes in group membership. When diet composition, expressed as the proportions of different prey types recorded in stomachs, was compared among functional groups, morphology-based predictions accounted for 28-56% of the interindividual variance in prey type. This was larger than the 12-24% of variance that could be explained solely on the basis of body size. ![]() | Rapport sur l'exercice de la pêche dans la zone côtière de la France Auteur(s) : Bolopion, Jacques Forest, Andre Sourd, Louis-julien Bolopion, Jacques Forest, Andre Sourd, Louis-julien Résumé : The maritime fisheries and mariculture guidance law passed in 1997 specifies that with the perspective of renegotiation of the common fisheries policy in 2002, a report on the special conditions of inshore fisheries be drawn up by the Government. To do so, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries entrusted this task to three experts, who are the authors of this report. In accordance with their remit, the situation of fisheries in territorial waters and estuaries of metropolitan France and the four DOM overseas departments ( counties) was examined, in the framework of meetings with professional fishermen, administrations, elected officials and scientific organisations. The first part situates fishing activities in coastal areas within the overall context of French fisheries. The second part provides a detailed report for each seafront (Channel, Atlantic, Mediterranean, West Indies, French Guyana and Reunion Island) on the regulatory framework, fleets, stocks, uses of resources and vulnerable areas of interest for fisheries. The report then analyses the competition within fisheries and with other activities (recreational fishing, extraction of aggregates, tourism, etc.). After these observations, the authors make ten proposals to improve the conditions under which coastal or inshore fisheries are practiced.
![]() | Alternatives to taxonomic-based approaches to assess changes in transitional water communities Auteur(s) : Mouillot, D Spatharis, S Reizopoulou, S Laugier, Thierry Sabetta, L Basset, A Chi, T Éditeur(s) : John Wiley & Sons Résumé : 1. Transitional waters, described as critical transition zones because of their position at terrestrial, freshwater and marine interfaces, provide essential goods and services to the biosphere including human populations. These ecotones face increasing human influence mainly due to population density increase in coastal areas. 2. Transitional water bodies have, to date, received little attention in the development of ecological status indicators, this is a critical deficiency when trying to meet the Water Framework Directive objective of all significant water bodies achieving good ecological status by the year 2015. 3. In order to assess changes in transitional water communities many taxonomic-based indicators have already been proposed but there are a number of concerns for their use such as taxonomic classification difficulties, their unsuitability for multi-site comparisons and their inconsistent relationships with disturbance or stress. 4. Alternative methods based on body size, abundance distribution among functional groups, functional diversity and productivity descriptors are proposed. These methods offer the opportunity to compare sites with different taxonomic compositions and allow derivation of indicators related to ecological status of communities under scrutiny. 5. Finally, the suitability of these taxonomic-free descriptors to provide relevant information for each of the four main biotic compartments in coastal lagoons is discussed. The use of biomass distribution among functional groups for fish, benthos and macrophyte and to use body-size distribution for benthos and plankton is proposed. ![]() | Catalogue descriptif des poissons vénéneux du banc de Saint Barthelemy (Antilles françaises) Auteur(s) : Morice, Jean Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The Caribean Sea ichthyofauna, like that of all tropical and subtropical seas, contains venomous fishes some of which can cause certain forms of ichthyosarcotoxism. The first people to notice, at their expense, the existence of these dangerous animals in the waters of the West Indies were the conquistadores who settled in Haïti and Cuba after Christopher COLOMBUS. As these men were not well provided by fresh supplies from their far away home-as related by many chroniclers-they had to live on local food resources. Originally, terrestrial fauna, in these islands, was very lacking as far as big mammals go, and birds bigger than a pigeon were rare. As a consequence, Spanish sailors and soldiers ate mostly seafood, fish, crustaceans and molluscs that abounded in the clear waters of the Caribean shores. (The introduction of European mammals: bovines, ovines, caprines and porcines, but also poultry, only happened many years later-cattle raising only developed when the conquistadores were well settled and land had been divided-initial protid production was not sufficient to cover the Spaniards' needs.... Thus, investigating how anthropogenic disturbances affect the quality of these habitats is of major importance to understand their consequences on the population renewal of marine species. The aim of the present study was to analyse the effects of estuarine habitat degradation on the population of the common sole in the Eastern Channel, a key species in the fish community and fisheries in this area. We especially focused on the drastic drop in the surface area and on the low water quality of the Seine estuary, the main river of the Eastern Channel. A geographic Information System (GIS) was used to develop quantitative maps of sole nursery habitats in the Eastern Channel by using a habitat suitability model based on bathymetry and sediment structure. This approach indicated that juvenile densities are low in the Seine estuary with regards to other nursery sectors. Then, thanks to historical maps of the Seine estuary, habitat suitability maps were built for key dates in the modifications of this estuary since 1850. This backward predictive approach suggests that habitat loss in the Seine estuary has led to a 42% decrease of its nursery capacity. As the density of juvenile sole in the Seine estuary is low in comparison to other sectors, this represents only a 3% loss at the sole population scale, in the Eastern Channel. However, when we assumed that prior to anthropogenic disturbance the juvenile density in the Seine estuary might have been equivalent to the current density of adjacent sectors with higher quality, the loss in abundance could be nearly 23% (8-36%). Results suggest that the loss in habitat surface combined with habitat degradation has led to an important loss in the contribution of the Seine estuary nursery to the whole sole population in the Eastern Channel. ![]() | Haematological and physiological characteristics of diploid and triploid sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L. Auteur(s) : Peruzzi, Stefano Varsamos, Stamatis Chatain, Beatrice Fauvel, Christian Menu, Bruno Falguiere, Jean-claude Severe, Armelle Flik, Gert Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The purpose of this study was to determine whether diploid and triploid sea bass differed in terms of main haematological and physiological characteristics. Diploid and triploid fish were produced by sub-optimal pressure treatments and held in communal environments under standard rearing conditions. Total red blood cell count (RBCC), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cellular haemoglobin content (MCH), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), plasma metabolites, osmotic pressure, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity, electrolytes, cortisol, and 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine (T-3) were measured and compared. Triploidisation in sea bass led to an increase in erythrocyte size (32% in cytoplasm surface area, and 50% in nucleus) and a decrease in erythrocyte number (similar to34%). Haemoglobin and basal plasma cortisol levels were significantly lower in triploid sea bass than in diploids. There were also differences between ploidies in the plasma concentrations of some electrolytes, with triploids showing lower concentrations of K, Fe, Zn, S, and Cu than their diploid counterparts. ![]() | Les modeles de DCP mis au point par la CPS: bilan et perspectives Auteur(s) : Desurmont, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Since the early 1980's, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC, formerly the South Pacific Commission) has contributed to the development of FAD programmes for the artisanal fisheries sector in the Pacific region. In particular, it has put considerable efforts into developing technology that would assure a two-year average FAD lifespan, while maintaining costs under US$ 4,000 per FAD unit. From 1996 to 1998, this work led to the publication of three volumes of the SPC FAD Manual. Volume 2 of this manual, "Rigging Deep-Water FAD Moorings", describes in great detail two FAD models that were developed from the original 1983 SPC-recommended model, and gives precise instructions on the way to construct them. Despite SPC's work, the objectives set, in particular the two-year average lifespan for FADs, have not been consistently met, resulting in many FAD programmes in the region being suspended. An analysis of the reasons why this has occurred is presented, along with a short description of the practical research that could be pursued, using different objectives, to introduce new FAD programmes in the region.
