Résumé : The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is an emblematic species of marine life. However, nowadays it is subject to many threats (poaching, by-catch). Even if there is deep growing measures for its protection, the green turtle still is an endangered species and it is listed in Appendix I of Washington Convention (CITES). In order to elaborate efficient conservation and management plans, perfect knowledge of green turtle biology, but also of its population structure and their characteristics, are needed. In this thesis, we have assessed genetic structure of green turtle populations in the South-Western Indian Ocean by using genetic tools. In all, 1551 tissue samples have been collected from our study zone and from our control site French Polynesia (37 samples). All kinds if individuals were sampled (except males in reproductive phase) from 15 sampling sites including nesting, foraging, and immature development site. We used both control region of mitochondrial DNA and 6 microsatellite loci to better infer maternal and paternal lineages. We identified 29 haplotypes in the South-Western Indian Ocean. They are distributed in 3 independent and highly divergent clades, including one composed with haplotypes from Atlantic Ocean. For 7 of these haplotypes, it was the first time they were detected in the study zone. Fifteen haplotypes were previously undescribed, distributed in all the 3 clades. These new haplotypes seem to be specific to the South-Western Indian Ocean, which is then an original zone. Besides, we found a high allelic richness. These results show the South-western Indian Ocean is rich and very diversified. This region plays an important role in the global diversity of the species. The South-Western Indian Ocean is one of the two contact zones presently known between the two metapopulations of green turtles (Atlantic-Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific). This contact induces a genetic cline based on CM8 (Atlantic) and C3 (Indo-Pacific) haplotype frequencies. Analysis of the microsatellite differentiation between individuals provides evidence of genetic exchanges between the two metapopulations in the region. The South-Western Indian Ocean participates to green turtle global genetic mixing. Studying the influence of several intrinsic and extrinsic factors on population structuring provides useful information for management plan elaboration. We found no significant difference between genetic structures of foraging females and males, contrary to immature turtles which seem to be organised in 'regional pools'. This organisation could be due to both immature natal homing and influence of oceanic currents. High mitochondrial differentiation of nesting females and low global microsatellite differentiation of our samples indicate male-mediated gene flow among populations of the study zone. The genetic composition of a sampling site presents no significant variation along the year, even if we could notice some trends. Nevertheless, it can be significantly different from a year to an other one. This may result from alternation of distinct populations on the same site. We noticed different evolution in 10 or 20 years of the genetic composition depending on the sampling site. Geographic distance seems not to have significant influence on population structuring concerning microsatellite markers. Nesting females of Saziley Beach (Mayotte Island, Comoros Archipelago) present genetic divergence from females nesting in the two other sampled beaches of this island. The observed population structure shows no contradiction with the organisation of oceanic currents in the South-Western Indian Ocean. Comparing the results from the two genetic markers used, we identified 8 genetic differentiated clusters of turtles in the study zone and at least 6 distinct populations. These clusters constitute 8 potential management units (MUs) which could serve as basis in the elaboration of conservation and management plans.
La tortue verte (Chelonia mydas) constitue l'un des espèces emblématiques de la vie marine, pourtant de nombreuses menaces pèsent de nos jours encore sur sa survie (braconnage, captures accidentelles). Ainsi, malgré l'essor de mesures de protection menées à travers pour sa sauvegarde, la tortue verte constitue une espèce 'en danger d'extinction' et figure dans l'Annexe I de la Convention de Washington (CITES). Afin d'élaborer des plans de gestion et de conservation qui soient efficaces, il est important d'avoir une parfaite connaissance de la biologie de la tortue verte, mais aussi de la structure de ses populations et de leurs caractéristiques. C'est dans ce cadre que s'inscrit la présente étude. L'objectif de cette étude était d'acquérir des connaissances sur la structure des populations de tortues vertes dans le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien grâce à l'utilisation de l'outil génétique. Au total, 1551 échantillons de tissu ont été collectés dans la zone d'étude et dans notre site témoin la Polynésie française (37 échantillons). Toutes les catégories d'individus ont été échantillonnées (excepté les mâles en phase de reproduction) et les 15 sites d'échantillonnage comprennent à la fois des sites de ponte, d'alimentation et de développement pour les immatures. Deux types de marqueurs ont été utilisés : la région contrôle de l'ADN mitochondrial et 6 loci microsatellites, afin d'appréhender au mieux l'apport des lignées maternelles et paternelles. Nous avons pu mettre en évidence la présence dans le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien de 29 haplotypes distincts, appartenant à trois clades fortement divergents dont l'un constitué d'haplotypes originaires de l'océan Atlantique. Parmi ces haplotypes, 7 ont été détectés pour la première fois dans la zone d'étude, et 15 autres n'ont jamais été précédemment décrits chez cette espèce. Ils sont présents dans chacun des 3 clades d'haplotypes. Ces nouveaux haplotypes semblent spécifiques à la région, et en font une zone originale. On observe par ailleurs une grande richesse allélique dans les effectifs analysés. Ces résultats montrent que le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien est une zone riche et très diversifiée. Cette région joue un rôle important dans la diversité génétique globale de l'espèce. Le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien constitue l'une des deux seules zones connues à l'heure actuelle de contact entre les deux métapopulations de tortues vertes (Atlantique-Méditerranée et Indo-Pacifique). Ce contact a entraîné la formation d'un cline génétique portant principalement sur les fréquences relatives des haplotypes CM8 (Atlantique) et C3 (Indo-Pacifique). Les résultats obtenus lors de l'analyse microsatellite de la différenciation entre les individus originaires des deux métapopulations montrent que le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien constitue une zone d'échanges génétiques entre les deux métapopulations, participant au brasage génétique de l'espèce. L'étude de facteurs, intrinsèques et extrinsèques, pouvant influencer la structuration des populations apportent de nombreuses informations qui pourraient s'avérer utiles lors de l'élaboration de plans de gestion. La structure des femelles et des mâles en alimentation ne diffère pas, contrairement à celle des immatures qui semble s'organiser en 'pools régionaux' qui seraient le fruit de l'interaction d'un comportement de philopatrie et d'une influence des courants océaniques. La forte différenciation mitochondriale des femelles en ponte et la très faible différenciation microsatellite observée à l'échelle de la région, indiquent l'existence de flux de gènes via les mâles. La composition génétique d'un site ne varie pas de manière significative au cours de l'année. Par contre, elle peut varier d'une année à l'autre, signifiant l'alternance dans certains sites de ponte de plusieurs populations distinctes. L'évolution de la composition génétique d'un groupe, au cours de 10 ou 20 ans, diffère selon le site considéré. La distance ne semble pas influencer de manière significative la structuration des populations au niveau microsatellite. Les femelles en ponte sur la plage de Saziley (Mayotte) diffèrent génétiquement de celles pondant sur les deux autres plages de l'île. La structure observée des populations est en accord avec l'organisation des courants océanique dans la région. La confrontation des résultats obtenus à partir des deux marqueurs génétiques utilisés, permet la détermination de 8 ensembles génétiquement différenciés dans la zone d'étude et l'identification d'au moins 6 populations distinctes. Ces ensembles constituent autant d'unités de gestion (MUs) potentielles qui pourront servir de base à l'élaboration de plans de gestion et de conservation.

Résumé : For centuries, several species of prawns and crabs have been raised from wild-caught juveniles in coastal brackish-water fish ponds in various countries of south east Asia. The Indonesian "tambaks" are well known examples of such traditional practices. In western countries, since the turn of the century, advances of marine biology and fast increase of marine fisheries enabled the development of large-scale production and release of larval stages of American and European lobsters in a fruitless attempt to restock natural populations. After the Second World War, the increasing demand for crustaceans in United States and Japan was satisfied by opening new prawn fisheries all over the world. A major breakthrough was achieved with the development of hatchery technologies for the penaeid prawn Penaeus japonicus (Hudinaga, 1942 in Japan) and the caridean prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Ling, 1969 in Malaysia), which occurred during the first decades of the second half of this century. Together with the increasing market demand in developed countries for sea food, this led to a considerable interest of both public agencies and private investors in marine shrimp and prawn culture. In western countries, a large number of pioneering commercial ventures, often based on assumptions not scientifically founded, failed. Nevertheless, the aquaculture production of prawns mainly based on wild-caught juveniles increased in South-East Asia and Central America during the 1980s. This overall positive trend should not hide important failures which occurred at a local scale, such as the Taiwanese crisis of 1988 due principally to environmental degradation, resulting in severe disease problems and a near collapse of the farming activity. Following the early period of hatchery technology development, the major scientific achievements were related to food requirements and formulation of compound diets for larvae, juveniles and adults and to a better knowledge of diseases caused by bacteria and several viruses which have been identified from hatcheries and intensive farming ponds. Additional new technological advances have emerged from recent research in the fields of physiology (endocrinology) and genetics. By far, the major part of the world production of marine crustaceans relies on penaeid prawns and, to a lesser extent, on Macrobrachium species. However, some other species of marine crustaceans have potential for aquaculture. The economic aspects of marine crustacean aquaculture should be considered together with those of the fishing industry: market prices are rather similar, depending on the quality of the product. The balance between market demand and production is an important constraint which, in turn, establishes the success of prawn farming. Since the early 1980s, crustacean aquaculture has increased tremendously in both Asia and America: the world production for 1991 approximated 700,000 tons, with more than 600,000 tons from penaeid prawn culture.
Pendant des siècles, quelques espèces de crevettes et de crabes ont été élevées à partir d'individus juvéniles capturés dans le milieu naturel, dans des bassins à poissons d'eau saumâtre de différents pays d'Asie du Sud-Est. Les « tambaks » indonésiens sont des exemples bien connus de ces pratiques traditionnelles. Dans les pays occidentaux, depuis le début du siècle, les progrès réalisés en biologie marine et la croissance rapide des pêches maritimes ont permis le développement de la production à grande échelle de stades larvaires des homards européen et américain, dans une vaine tentative de reconstitution des stocks naturels. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la demande croissante des Etats-Unis et du Japon a été satisfaite par l'ouverture de nouvelles pêcheries de crevettes dans l'océan mondial. Un progrès décisif a été réalisé avec la mise au point des techniques d'écloserie pour la crevette Pénaeidé Penaeus juponicus (Hudinaga, 1942 au Japon) et la crevette Caridé Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Ling, 1969 en Malaisie), qui sont apparues au cours des premières décennies de la seconde moitié de ce siècle. Parallèlement à la demande croissante du marché des pays développés pour les produits de la mer, ce résultat s'est traduit par un intérêt considérable porté à l'élevage des crevettes marines de la part des institutions de recherche et des investisseurs. Dans les pays occidentaux, un grand nombre de tentatives d'élevage commerciales, fondées sur des considérations non scientifiquement établies, ont échoué. Néanmoins, la production aquacole de crevettes reposant sur la capture d'animaux juvéniles dans la nature, s'est développée en Asie du Sud-Est et en Amérique Centrale au cours des années 1980. Cette tendance globalement positive ne doit pas dissimuler les faillites importantes qui se sont produites à l'échelle locale, comme la crise des élevages de Taiwan en 1988, causée principalement par une dégradation de l'environnement, entraînant l'apparition de problèmes pathologiques sévères et une disparition presque totale de l'activité d'élevage. Après la période pionnière du développement de la technologie d'écloserie, les principaux acquis scientifiques concernent les besoins alimentaires et la formulation d'aliments composés pour les larves, les jeunes et les adultes, et une meilleure connaissance des maladies bactériennes et virales qui interviennent dans les écloseries et les fermes d'élevage intensif. De nouveaux progrès techniques complémentaires ont vu le jour à la suite de recherches dans les domaines de la physiologie (endocrinologie) et de la génétique. De loin, la majeure partie de la production mondiale de Crustacés marins repose sur les crevettes Pénaeidés et, dans une moindre mesure, sur des espèces de Macrobrachium. Cependant, quelques autres espèces de Crustacés marins intéressent potentiellement l'aquaculture. Les aspects économiques de l'aquaculture de crustacés marins doivent être considérés avec ceux de l'industrie des pêches maritimes : les prix du marché sont à peu près les mêmes, et dépendent de la qualité du produit. Le rapport entre la demande du marché et la production est une contrainte importante qui à son tour, détermine les conditions du succès de l'élevage de crevettes. Depuis le début des années 1980, l'aquaculture de crustacés a augmenté considérablement en Asie et en Amérique : la production mondiale pour 1991 avoisine 700 000 tonnes, avec plus de 600 000 tonnes provenant des élevages de crevettes Pénaeidés.

Résumé : The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo, is responsible for one of the two main seasonal mortalities which affect shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia. It was identified for the first time in December 1997 in an intensive shrimp farm (called farm DF) and has been enzootic ever since. The "Summer syndrome" affects shrimp during warm-season growout. Although the geographic area concerned is limited, it is a potential threat for the industry in that the disease could spread. Analysis of grow out data from 1991 to 2002 in this farm was carried out in order to characterize the disease and the environmental conditions in relation to mortality. Results of farm DF were compared to data from farms not affected by the disease (called farms HC). The "Summer syndrome" occurs during the warm season which is characterized by an increase in water temperature and sunny duration. This disease is characterized by simultaneously highest densities and weakest drying duration between crops in the farms studied. Between 1991 and 2002, the increase of feed input and nitrogen rate in feed has led to a significant increase of the growth rate over the years in farm DF. At the same time, water management has not changed and has induced an increase in environmental waste production. In consequence, an early eutrophication of water is observed, which is concomitant with the beginning of the mortality outbreaks. This could play a role by inducing directly or indirectly a stress for shrimp and/or a growth and/or virulence factors of the pathogen.

Résumé : The present work aimed at better understanding metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in the edible Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris, using both laboratory and field approaches. In the laboratory, the bioaccumulation kinetics of Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, and Zn have been investigated in shrimp exposed via seawater and food, using the corresponding gamma-emitting radiotracers (Ag-110m, Cd-109, Co-57, Cr-51, and Zn-65) and highly sensitive nuclear detection techniques. Results showed that hepatopancreas and intestine concentrated the metals to the highest extent among the blue shrimp organs and tissues. Moulting was found to play a non negligible detoxification role for Co, Cr and, to a lesser extent, Zn. Metal retention by L stylirostris widely varied (from a few days to several months), according to the element and exposure pathway considered (a given metal was usually less strongly retained when ingested with food than when it was taken up from the dissolved phase). In the field study, Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn were analysed in shrimp collected from a New Caledonian aquaculture pond. Metal concentrations in the shrimp muscles were generally relatively low and results confirmed the role played by the digestive organs and tissues in the bioaccumulation/storage/detoxification of metals in the Pacific blue shrimp. Preliminary risk considerations indicate that consumption of the shrimp farmed in New Caledonia is not of particular concern for human health. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Résumé : We present new high-resolution bathymetry and backscatter data acquired in 2006 with the ROV Victor 6000 over the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge. As long-term monitoring of the Lucky Strike area (MoMAR project) is being implemented, these new high-resolution data offer an unprecedented view of the distribution of hydrothermal edifices, eruptive facies, and small-scale tectonic features in the Lucky Strike vent field. We show that vents located in the NW and NE correspond with wide expanses of lumpy seafloor which we interpret as primarily made of broken chimneys and sulfide edifices. They are found above scarps with relief > 50 m or on associated mass wasting deposits. By contrast, the SE and SW vents correspond with small expanses of lumpy seafloor and are located near smaller scarps which we interpret as more recent faults. Hydrothermal edifices in the SW venting area appear very recent, postdating the emplacement and faulting of the most recent lava. We propose that this difference in the age of hydrothermal edifices does not mean that hydrothermal venting itself is more recent in the southern part of the Lucky Strike field because preexisting sulfide deposits there may have been buried by recent volcanic deposits. Instead, the older edifices in the northern part of the hydrothermal field may have been allowed more time to grow because they are set above the level of recent lava flows. The formation of a lava lake is the most recent eruptive event detected at Lucky Strike. Lava drainback is evidenced by benches and lava pillars, suggesting a close connection with an underlying magma reservoir, which probably corresponds to the melt body imaged by Singh et al. (2006). We have found no evidence that this lake was active for months to decades, as lava lakes at terrestrial volcanoes. It may instead have formed as a lava pond, with successive lava flows covering the eruptive vents, as proposed for similar features at the EPR. The horizontal surface of the lake is deformed only near its southwestern shore, along a NNE-trending set of faults and fissures, which appear to control the distribution of hydrothermal chimneys.

Résumé : In order to have a standardised database gathering most information on New Caledonian prawn farms a software, called “Stylog-module ferme”, was developed and implemented by Ifremer with the help of shrimp farmers. Data recording results in more than 2 million data from 250 crops since the beginning of the project (2003). The main objective is to help the researchers in understanding the processes taking place in a cultured pond. It also provides a follow-up of the prawn farming industry (evolution of management practices, health surveillance system…) and to facilitate sharing of information between the different partners of the industry (prawn farmers, research and local authorities). Finally, this decision-making tool also helps shrimp farmers for routine crop management. This poster presents the method and tools used to create this database, from the definition of specifications, in close relation with end users, to the implementation of a real project structure, including all partners (users committee and steering committee, agreement of confidentiality). It also shows some examples resulting from the analysis of these data (investigating good management practices indicators, publishing technical bulletins or specific data analysis for research…). Finally, the networking (Extranet) of this base seems to present real perspectives in sharing information, and analysis capacity.
Afin de disposer d'une base de données regroupant un maximum d'informations collectées sur les fermes de grossissement de crevettes de Nouvelle-Calédonie, dans un format informatisé et standardisé, un logiciel nommé « Stylog – module ferme » a été développé par l'Ifremer en lien avec les aquaculteurs. L'archivage des données a permis de collecter depuis le début de sa conception (2003) plus de 2 millions de données représentant près de 250 élevages. Les objectifs principaux de cette base sont d'aider les chercheurs dans la compréhension de phénomènes pouvant survenir dans un bassin d'élevage, d'assurer un suivi de la filière (évolution des pratiques zootechniques, veille clinique…) et de faciliter les échanges d'informations entre les différents partenaires de la filière (aquaculteurs privés, recherche, institutions). Enfin, cet outil d'aide à la décision permet aux aquaculteurs de gérer leurs élevages au quotidien. Ce poster explique d'une part, la méthode et les outils utilisés pour créer cette base de données, de la réalisation du cahier des charges, en lien étroit avec les utilisateurs finaux, à la mise en place d'une réelle structure projet regroupant les différents partenaires (comité des utilisateurs et comité de pilotage, convention de confidentialité). D'autre part, il présente quelques exemples de résultats en termes d'utilisation de ces données (recherche d'indicateurs de qualité d'élevage, édition de bulletins techniques, analyses de données spécifiques à la recherche…). Enfin, la mise en réseau (Extranet) de cette base semble présenter de réelles perspectives en termes de partage de l'information et de capacité d'analyses.

Résumé : Three shrimp species, Penaeus monodon, P. stylirostris (Panama and Mexican strains) and P. vannamei have matured and spawned in captivity at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (COP) laboratory. The shrimp, originally stocked as juveniles or postlarvae, were reared to adult size in tanks and ponds and have completed the cycle: F3 generation for P. monodon, F2 for P. stylirostris (Panama strain) and P. vannamei and F1 for P. stylirostris (Mexican strain). Maturation occurs naturally under our rearing conditions or is induced by unilateral eyestalk ablation. Details are given on mating behavior, ovarian development, number of spawnings, egg viability and maintenance of captive brood stock. Partial results so far obtained for P. monodon and P. stylirostris clearly show a reared brood stock could sustain a commercial hatchery. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Résumé : Penaeus stylirostris shrimp imported from Hawaii for a genetic program and kept at the Saint-Vincent research facility had progressively developed a high sensitivity to IHHNV, the etiological agent of the Infectious, Hypodermic, and Hematopoietic Necrosis. Fears were that the virus could not only be transferred to their offspring, but also that the New Caledonian strain of Penaeus stylirostris, so far considered as resistant, could become sensitive by an off balance of its hosts/pathogen equilibrium. In October 2008, a joint decision between Uprac (shimp owner), Davar (New Caledonian Animal Health Authority) and Ifremer (scientific partner) was taken to terminate all pure breed and hybrid Hawaiian populations remaining in the ponds, and to implement an intensive fallowing protocol, and controlled restocking. IHHNV was also suspected to trouble experiments carried out in the research facility (mortalities, deformities, slow growth), thus affecting research programs. Difficulties pointed out by IHHNV have triggered since 2008 some awareness on biosecurity issues at some level of the New Caledonian shrimp industry. At the St-Vincent research station, it led to a risk assessment and implementation of biosecurity procedures (fallowing, propagation, grow out and use of screened animals) which minimizes the risk of expression of IHHNV. The use of a brand new hatchery building on site also helped in resetting routine hygiene procedures during production and in controlling incoming and outgoing items (shrimp, water, feed, personnel, equipment, pests and wastes). IHHNV has not been detected on analysed samples since then nor have any symptoms been found during experimental or broodstock growout. Keeping this control alive is considered as a useful tool to lower the risk of potential health threats, to get a better understanding in case of an outbreak, and to increase the reliability of experimental results.
Les crevettes originaires d’Hawaii et conservées au LEAD St-Vincent, dans le cadre du programme d’introduction de variabilité génétique dans le cheptel Calédonien, ont progressivement montré une sensibilité importante au virus IHHNV, agent de la Nécrose Hypodermale et Hématopoïétique Infectieuse (mortalité, croissance ralentie, déformations). Les risques d’une transmission génétique de cette sensibilité à leur descendance à moyen terme, et de son développement par rupture de l’équilibre hôte/pathogène sur la souche dite « Calédonienne » jusqu’alors considérée comme résistante à l’IHHN, ont conduit à partir d’octobre 2008, avec l’accord et l’appui de l’UPRAC et de la DAVAR, à la suppression des animaux hawaiiens ou hybrides encore présents dans les bassins de terre du LEAD St-Vincent, au vide sanitaire de ces derniers, et au repeuplement contrôlé du site. D’autre part, le virus IHHN est soupçonné d’avoir pu affecter les animaux utilisés dans les expérimentations menées au LEAD-St-Vincent (mortalités, déformations, croissance réduite), influençant donc potentiellement leur bon déroulement et celui des programmes de recherches. Les obstacles soulevés par l’expression du virus IHHN ont donc initié depuis 2008 une prise de conscience et la mise en place de démarches de biosécurité dans certains points de la filière. A la station de St-Vincent, cette démarche s’est traduite par une identification/évaluation des risques et l’application de mesures (vide sanitaire, reproduction, élevage et utilisation des animaux contrôlés) chacune dotée de procédures qui regroupées, minimisent le risque d’introduction et de dissémination de l’IHHNV. La prise en main de la nouvelle structure d’écloserie sur le site de la SASV a également été mise à profit pour revoir les procédures d’hygiène de routine dans la conduite des productions et dans le contrôle des flux intrants et sortants (animaux, eau, aliments, personnel, équipement, nuisibles, déchets). Aucune détection d’IHHNV sur les échantillons prélevés n’a depuis été observée, de même qu’aucun symptôme de l’expression de cette maladie sur les animaux en élevage sur le site de Saint-Vincent. La poursuite de ces mesures est envisagée comme un outil d’aide à la minimisation des problèmes potentiels, à leur compréhension en cas d’apparition, et à la fiabilisation des résultats.

Résumé : The effect of different levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) and a decreased temperature combined with severe hypoxia were studied in the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in relation to molt stage. In the first experiment, shrimps were submitted to DO concentrations of 5 to 1 mg l(-1). Osmoregulatory capacity (OC) was measured in shrimps at molt stage C after 6, 24, or 48 h of exposure. No mortality was recorded but a significant negative effect of DO concentration on hypo-OC was observed for DO concentrations below 3 mg l(-1). Osmoregulation improved after 48 h exposure, compared to 6 and 24 h exposure. In a second experiment, temperature was decreased from 28 to 22 degreesC in 24 h, before a severe hypoxia of 0.5+/-0.1 mg O-2 l(-1) was applied. Mortality and OC were studied in relation to molt stages. Half of the shrimps died after respectively 100 min at 0.5 mg O-2 l(-1) at 28 degreesC and 153 min at 0.4 mg O-2 l(-1) at 22degreesC. Mortality was significantly higher in stages D-2 and B compared to stages C and Do. Control shrimps in stage D2 had a lower hypo-OC than shrimps in stages C and Do both at 28 and 22 degreesC. Temperature decrease had no effect on hypo-OC. Hypoxia reduced hypo-OC for all stages, whatever the temperature, but the effect was greater in stage C at 27 degreesC (68% decrease) compared to 22 degreesC (49%) and stage D-2 at both temperatures (respectively, 43% and 58% at 27 and 22 degreesC). Combination of temperature and hypoxia had a significant effect on hypo-OC. Low temperature reduced the effect of hypoxia presumably by slowing down the metabolism. Résumé : Centropomidae and Serranidae, sometimes collectively misnamed "sea basses", are suitable for aquaculture in pens, ponds, and raceways around the tropical and subtropical latitudes of the world. Western Atlantic Ocean species were recently considered for farming. South Florida, Mexico, Central and South America and the Antilles areas of the Caribbean Basin have extensive areas suitable for farming groupers and snook. Principal species of interest are the common snook (Centropomus undecimalis ), the fat snook (C. parallelus ), the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus ), Black seabass (Centropristis striatus ), Gag (Mycteroperca microlepis ), and jewfish (E. itajara ).

Résumé : The clearwater larval rearing method for Macrobrachium rosenbergii was perfected in the french research center of Tahiti in 1977 nad carried on to improve the technique especially on recirculating system. This aquaculture is launched in Martinique by the regional council in 1976. A first "green water" hatchery is built and provides juveniles to the first ponds.

Résumé : The consequences of handling stress (fishing, transfer, eyestalk ablation) on shrimp broodstock are poorly documented. The weakness of farmed shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, during winter is a major problem in New Caledonia, because of seasonal climate (tropical-sub-temperate). The transfer of broodstock in winter from earthen outdoor ponds to indoor maturation tanks in the hatchery (T=20 degrees C, Salinity=35 parts per thousand, fed shrimp) usually leads, after 48 h, to high mortality (up to 70%). Eyestalk ablation to induce ovarian maturation in females leads to further mortality. Starting from a background analysis of physiological disturbances (initial osmoregulatory imbalance) associated with handling stress (Wabete, N., Chim, L., Lernaire, P., Massabuau, J.-C., 2004. Actes Colloq. 38, 75-84.), we developed aprotocol using a soft technology, based on modifications of water salinity, temperature and feeding regime. The aim was to minimize problems of osmoregulatory imbalance and associated mortalities. The protocol we developed, called the LSD OT protocol (Low Salinity and Diet, Optimal Temperature), was first evaluated on sub-adult shrimp (20-25 g) and then applied to broodstock. Survival after transfer and following eyestalk ablation, as well as reproductive achievement (spawning rate, nauplii number) was considerably improved when shrimps were transferred under "physiological comfort" i.e. warmed isosmotic water (26 degrees C and 26 parts per thousand) and unfed for 3 d. This new handling protocol, based on a better control of salinity, temperature and feeding conditions, has been transferred successfully to private hatcheries and already contributes to an increased profitability of New-Caledonian shrimp industry. Résumé : The Summer Syndrome is a new shrimp disease that has been affecting a shrimp growout farm in New Caledonia since end of 1997. It was recognized to be caused by a systemic vibriosis due to Vibrio nigripulchritudo. This new disease turned out almost immediately enzootic in the shrimp farm involved and has affected all its crops ever since. Since the year 2000, V. nigripulchritudo strains have been found in several shrimp farms, although Summer Syndrome is still limited to one particular area, affecting, since 2003, two adjoining farms. As part of a multidisciplinary research program, a high-frequency survey was carried out during the summer 2002-2003 in two shrimp farms: one affected farm and another one in which pathogenic strains could be isolated but without any disease event. It permitted a good description of V. nigripulchritudo dynamics in shrimp and the ecosystem in both farms. The study of virulence characteristics of some isolates showed that pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains occur in the shrimp farms environment and that both may be found at the same time in one farm. Our results strongly suggest a persistence of pathogenic strains in wet zones of the pond sediment at low concentrations between crops in the affected farm, and their development during the rearing cycle as a cause of shrimp infection.
