New Caledonia is a developing industry, exclusively based on the species Litopenaeus stylirostris. However, it is subject to mortalities during grow out as observed all over the world. Since 1993, shrimp reared during the cold period are affected by a disease named "syndrome 93". As a consequence, the whole industry has become seasonal and produces essentially during the warm season. The climatic conditions during the periods of transition between the two main seasons could be responsible for an environmental stress and the origin reason for mortality outbreaks. Stocking density is the main risk factor. It increases the probability of the appearance and development of the epizooty in the pond. The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo, was identified for the first time in December 1997 in an intensive shrimp farm (DF). It has become enzootic ever since and is expressed after 50d of rearing. Since 2003, two others farms located near DF have developed the disease. As a consequence, the summer syndrome is considered to be a potential threat for all the industry. Between 1991 and 2005, the increase of feed input and nitrogen levels in feed has led to a significant increase in the growth rate over the years in the farms affected by the disease. In consequence, an early eutrophication of the water is observed, which is concomitant with the beginning of the mortality outbreaks. An early eutrophication and the virulence level of the pathogen are considered as the main risk factors of the disease. Factors may act synergistically to explain the summer syndrome. As part of a multidisciplinary approach (pathology physiology environment), two high-frequency surveys were carried out to analyse the pond ecosystem. Since the feed quantity increases with the biomass of shrimp, the eutrophication level of the pond ecosystem will also tend to increase with the duration of rearing. During the first part of the rearing, the abundance of each picoplankton type is exceptionally high and picophytoplankton dominated the autotrophic compartment. The nanophytoplankton dominated the second part of the rearing and was more unstable. The shift from pico to nanophytoplankton could be considered as an environmental stress and was observed in relation to the beginning of the mortalities, whatever the disease. Shift intensity could play a role by inducing directly or indirectly a stress for shrimp and/or a growth and/or virulence factors of the pathogen. Results from sediment studies show that mortality was best characterized by TAN concentration in pore water and even more when the TAN concentration was high. TAN and pH are potential stress factors for shrimp reared in ponds affected by these diseases. Nutrient and microbial dynamics in eutrophying shrimp ponds affected or unaffected by vibriosis Auteur(s) : Lemonnier, Hugues Courties, Claude Mugnier, Chantal Torreton, Jean-pascal Herbland, Alain Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : A field survey was conducted on two intensive shrimp farms using similar technical practices: one (DF) historically affected by a vibriosis, the other (HC) in which the pathogen has been observed although no mortality event has occurred. Because historical data suggest that eutrophication process may directly or indirectly play a role in the disease outbreak, we focussed our research on its dynamics. A higher variability of the phytoplanktonic compartment linked to an imbalance in the molar N:P ratio was observed in farm DF compared to farm HC, implying a modification on the linkage between the bacteria and phytoplankton compartments at DF. The beginning of the mortality outbreak at DF followed a shift from picoto nanophytoplankton. The organic matter mineralization process at the water-sediment interface may explain the disturbance observed in the water column during eutrophication. The consequences of this disturbance on shrimps' health status and pathogen ecology are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Combined effect of exposure to ammonia and hypoxia on the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris survival and physiological response in relation to molt stage Auteur(s) : Mugnier, Chantal Zipper, Etienne Goarant, Cyrille Lemonnier, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The effect of ambient ammonia, hypoxia and combination of both on survival and the physiological and immunological response of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in relation to molt stage was studied. Shrimp were submitted to 44.0-71.5 mg 1(-1) total ammonia-N corresponding to 2.0 mg 1(-1) unionized ammonia NH3-N and/or to 1.5 mg O-2 1(-1) (4.3 kPa) for 24 hours. Survival was recorded and the molt stages of both dead and surviving shrimp determined. Only shrimp in intermolt and premolt stages were sampled for analysis of haemolymph. Haemolymph was assayed for osmoregulatory capacity (OC), magnesium ion (Mg2+), calcium ion (Ca2+), total proteins, oxyhaemocyanin, lactate, glucose and total haemocyte count (THC). Low mortalities were recorded for shrimp submitted independently to ammonia or hypoxia. Seventy five percent of dead shrimp were in early post molt (stage A) in ammonia treatment, while hypoxia affected mainly late premolt animals (stage D-2). A synergic effect of ammonia and hypoxia combination (A+ O-2 treatment) on mortality was observed, affecting nearly exclusively shrimp in late premolt stage D-2. Analysis of molt stage repartition at the end of the experiment suggests that ammonia treatment may have accelerated molting. The common physiological response of shrimp to the different treatments was characterized by a reduced OC and an increase in Ca2+. Increase in Mg2+ could not be validated by the statistical analysis, as well as glycaemia variations. Plasmatic lactate level increased and THC decreased in shrimp submitted to hypoxia and the combination of hypoxia and ammonia. Total proteins concentration was reduced in ammonia and A+O-2 treatments. The effect was more pronounced in late premolt shrimp than in intermolt shrimp. Combination of ammonia and hypoxia led to a physiological response stronger than this observed for ammonia-alone and/or hypoxia-alone treatments, except for oxyhaemocyanin. The effects of each external factor (ammonia, hypoxia) and the combination of both, and internal one (molt stage) are discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.
- d’une part à étudier l’évolution des différentes strates végétales d’une mangrove en terme de structure et de superficie par le biais d’analyses diachroniques de photographies aériennes de 3 sites (2 sites jouxtant des fermes aquacoles aux caractéristiques différentes et 1 site vierge) ;
Feasibility of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris and goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus in a mesocosm system Auteur(s) : Luong, Trung Cong Hochard, Sebastien Royer, Florence Lemonnier, Hugues Letourneur, Yves Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The study was conducted to (1) estimate the effects of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris with goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus on production, environmental quality and water and sediment metabolism and (2) to determine if blue shrimp and goldlined rabbitfish polyculture is possible. The experiment was carried out for 12 weeks in a mesocosm system that consisted of 12 circular outdoor mesocosm fiberglass tanks (1.7 m2, 1275 L water volume). Shrimp (2.9 g) were randomly stocked at density of 15 shrimp.m− 2 without rabbitfish (control), with rabbitfish (25.5 g) at low density (1.2 fish.m− 2) (LDRB) and high density (2.4 fish.m− 2) (HDRB). Results indicated that goldlined rabbitfish S. lineatus did not affect shrimp growth performance. At the end of the experiment, the combined shrimp and rabbitfish yields in the LDRB (213 g.m− 2) treatment and the HDRB (295 g.m− 2) treatment were significantly greater (P < 0.05) than the shrimp yield in the control (143 g.m− 2). Most of the water and sediment parameters were similar among treatments. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in gross primary productivity and respiration between the HDRB treatment and the control. It was concluded that the polyculture of blue shrimp with goldlined rabbitfish is technically possible without degradation of the environment in the culture system. Effect of water exchange on effluent and sediment characteristics and on partial nitrogen budget in semi-intensive shrimp ponds in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Lemonnier, Hugues Faninoz, Sebastien Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : An experiment was conducted in six earthen ponds with 20 shrimps m(-2) Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) during the warm season in New Caledonia to study the dynamics of wastes in relation with water exchange rate (WER). The nitrogen budget was established, taking into account the different forms of nitrogen in the water, sediment, feed and shrimp. Data from a wide range of treatments applied in unreplicated ponds were treated using regression analysis to establish the relationship between WER and partial nitrogen budget, sediment characteristics and shrimp performance. To compare effluent quality between treatments during the season, data were analysed using the non-parametric sign test. The water outflow was characterized by a decrease in the concentrations of N-mineral forms (TAN, NO2--NO3-), an increase in the concentration of organic soluble and sestonic organic forms (expressed in terms of particulate nitrogen, particulate organic carbon, chlorophyll a) compared with the water inflow. Increasing WER increased the amount of exported wastes and mainly in the organic forms and TAN can be considered as negligible. The nitrogen budget showed that 19-46% of nitrogen input (feed+water) was exported into the coastal environment. The results showed that the quality of the sediment decreased as WER decreased. The potential negative impact of the developing industry in New Caledonia on the costal environment could be partially reduced in a first step by decreasing WER. However, if applied in the farms, this practice should be linked to a close survey of the evolution of sediment quality. Eutrophication in a tropical pond: Understanding the bacterioplankton and phytoplankton dynamics during a vibriosis outbreak using flow cytometric analyses Auteur(s) : Lucas, Ronan Courties, C. Herbland, Alain Goulletquer, Philippe Marteau, Anne-laure Lemonnier, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : In tropical shrimp ponds, the increasing of feed input, concomitantly with the stocking shrimp biomass, induces an eutrophication of the ecosystem. Although difficult to maintain, its stability is required to guarantee the success of the culture. A 110-day period of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton stock and dynamics in an earthen pond (1.2 ha area, 1 m depth) was monitored using flow cytometry to provide baseline information on community characteristics and ecosystem instability. Seven autotrophic cell types were identified over the whole sampling period. Prokaryotic cells included Synechococcus sp., a group named UNK which presented an atypical new flow cytometric signature and picoeukaryotes (PEUK). Nanophytoplankton cells were represented by 4 groups: NAN1, NAN2, NAN3 and Cryptophytes. During the first part of the survey, picophytoplankton dominated the phytoplanktonic assemblage. The mean abundance of total cells (up to 8 x 10(6) cells mL(-1)) was among the highest recorded in marine and brackish waters. Bacterial abundance and production ranged from 0.8 to 5.1 x 10(7) cells mL(-1) and from 30 to 110 mu g C L-1 h(-1). A shift from pico to nanophytoplankton abundance was observed for a few days from d 96. During this period, heterotrophic bacteria production and abundance suddenly dropped, implying a change in the functioning of the microbial loop. This shift was concomitant with a significant shrimp mortality outbreak due to Vibrio penaeicida, the etiological agent of a disease known as Syndrome 93, which affects the shrimp industry in New Caledonia. This survey suggests that flow cytometric analysis could be used for the monitoring of aquaculture systems to improve our understanding of the complex phytoplankton and bacterial dynamics of these systems and its potential influence on disease development. Physiological response of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris to short-term confinement on a pond bottom Auteur(s) : Mugnier, Chantal Lemonnier, Hugues Legrand, Alexandre Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris was exposed to pond sediment for 48 h and its physiological response was studied in relation to molt stage. Shrimp were maintained in cages within a semi-intensive pond after 4 months of rearing. Hypoosmoregulatory capacity (hypo-OC), magnesium ions (Mg ions), glucose, total proteins and oxyhaemocyanin were assayed in haemolymph. An increase of 370% to 500% in Mg ions concentration and 200% to 266% in glucose concentration, and a decrease in hypo-OC in shrimp maintained close to the centre of the pond indicated a short-term stress response in all molt stages. Indicators of water and sediment pore water quality were within normal operating limits, however this area was characterized by high water content and relatively high total ammonia nitrogen in pore water of sediment. To a lesser extent, shrimp maintained in two other stations also presented a stress response. Physiological response of shrimp in molt stage D, compared to C/D-0 and D-2 seems to indicate that shrimp were more sensitive to environment at this stage. The use and choice of physiological parameters to detect shrimp stress in a pond are discussed. DEDUCTION : A research project for shrimp farming sustainability in New-Caledonia Auteur(s) : Beliaeff, Benoit Chim, Liet Della Patrona, Luc Goyard, Emmanuel Herlin, Jose Labreuche, Yannick Walling, Emilie Ansquer, Dominique Éditeur(s) : The 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress : Pacific Countries and their Ocean: Facing Local and Global Changes. March 2 - 6, 2009 Tahiti, French Polynesia Résumé : New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government of New Caledonia. This program has been designed in a multidisciplinary approach integrating the suspected multifactorial origin of shrimp mortalities. Environment quality in ponds (either sediment or water column) plays a major role in the shrimp ecophysiological status, influencing sensitivity to pathogens . DEDUCTION focuses on a better knowledge of phytoplankton composition and biogeochemical fluxes at the sediment-water interface in ponds. Impact of farm discharges is also investigated. In addition, a more fundamental work is conducted to understand the pathogenicity mechanisms of these two Vibrio species but also to prevent the occurrence of viral infections through a RNA interference approach. Markers of the ecophysiological status of broodstock, larvae, post-larvae and reared animals, such as enzymes testifying from an oxidative stress, are developed. Gain of performance (resistance to pathogens and growth) were obtained on hybrids of the New Caledonian and introduced Hawaiian strains. Finally the database Stylog is exploited in view of discriminating “good” from “bad” rearings on the basis of relevant indicators. Impact de la crevetticulture calédonienne sur l'environnement : état des lieux, recherche de traceurs des effluents et définition d'un programme de recherche pluriannuel Auteur(s) : Lemonnier, Hugues Thomas, Yoann Legrand, Alexandre Martin, Jean-louis Herbland, Alain Résumé : In the booming context of shrimp culture in French Caledonia, some research actions need to be considered in order (i) to make sure this production will not impact the quality and biodiversity of the coastal environment it is contingent upon (ii) for the field to highlight, based on objective bases, its good "environmental image", for an efficient commercialization of its products. In the framework of the MOM project, a number of actions have been carried out: Action 1: A bibliographical synthesis of the impact of shrimp culture on coastal environment has been conducted, taking into account the works carried out throughout the world and in French Caledonia in order to draw the main issues the Territory will have to deal with. It seems necessary to start with an assessment of the future and the impact of the effluents on the coastal environment. Action 2: With this aim in mind, one or more indicators, among the lagoon's environmental variables, of the influence of the farms' rejects on the coastal environment, have been searched for. The first results are presented in this report. Action 3: In parallel, a long-term program taking into account the different aspects of the problem in its entirety and complexity has been defined in relation with our partners in French Caledonia. With this aim in mind, a symposium entitled "Ecosystems and shrimp culture", organised by the Ifremer in French Caledonia, with the support of the IRD, was held in Nouméa from June 22nd to June 24th, 2005. This symposium enabled the drawing out of the research perspective on the benthos, on the functioning of the lagoon ecosystem, and on the evolution of the mangrove swamps subjected to organic matter inflows from farms. Biological, physiological, immunological and nutritional assessment of farm-reared Litopenaeus stylirostris shrimp affected or unaffected by vibriosis Auteur(s) : Mugnier, Chantal Justou, Carole Lemonnier, Hugues Patrois, Jacques Ansquer, Dominique Goarant, Cyrille Le Coz, Jean-rene Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is subject to seasonal mortalities during grow-out due to highly virulent Vibrio nigripulchritudo (Vn). To understand the mechanisms affecting shrimp resistance and leading to significant mortality, a shrimp ecophysiology and immunology survey was conducted on two farms, the first considered as a "control" farm (HC), the second affected by the disease (DF). Mortality observed during the survey at DF started 50 days after stocking and was typical of this disease. The main observations regarding shrimp were: (a) growth was not affected by the disease and was faster in the DF than in the HC pond; (b) disease did not affect one sex more than the other, or a specific part of the population in terms of weight; (c) the physical condition of shrimp did not specifically allow us to foresee disease outbreak; (d) shrimp at late premolt stage D-2 and early postmolt stage A appeared to be at some points of the mortalities - but not continuously - the most sensitive to disease; (e) physiological, immunological and nutritional parameters of uninfected shrimp in the DF pond were altered, suggesting that environmental stress occurred just before the first mortalities; (f) data suggest that Vn-infected shrimp are more stressed than the presumed healthy shrimp. Combined with pathological and environmental knowledge gained in parallel during this survey, a conceptual model is proposed. Results suggest that an unstable environment induced conditions (i) stressful for the shrimp, increasing their susceptibility to bacterial infections and (ii) favoring the proliferation of the pathogen in the pond. The combination of these two processes could lead to significant mortality. Aquaculture (0044-8486) (Elsevier Science Bv), 2013-04 , Vol. 388 , P. 105-114 Droits : 2013 Elsevier B.V. Influence of sediment characteristics on shrimp physiology: pH as principal effect Auteur(s) : Lemonnier, Hugues Bernard, E Boglio, E Goarant, Cyrille Cochard, Jean-claude Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Penaeid shrimp reared in earthen ponds are exposed to sediment, which can, in some instances, induce a stress. In seawater, the osmoregulatory capacity (hyporegulation) is a useful tool to compare the physiological condition of shrimp exposed to various stressors. By keeping some shrimp in cages at different locations of a single pond heterogeneous in terms of sediment quality, it was possible, using osmotic pressure (OP), to identify some locations where the stress was maximum and some others where it was minimum. Simultaneously, sediment samples were taken and analysed in order to evaluate some physico-chemical parameters that could be related to the stress observed in the shrimps kept in the cages. This approach allowed to show a significant positive correlation between the pH of the sediment surface and the shrimp osmotic pressure. This result was confirmed in a study carried out in experimental 70-1 tanks, where osmotic pressure decreased significantly as water pH decreased from 7.0 to 6.5. The methodology developed in this study may be useful to evaluate the stress caused by sediment in shrimp farms. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Spatial and temporal extension of eutrophication associated with shrimp farm wastewater discharges in the New Caledonia lagoon Auteur(s) : Thomas, Yoann Courties, Claude El Helwe, Yasmin Herbland, Alain Lemonnier, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Shrimp farming in New Caledonia typically uses a flow-through system with water exchange rates as a tool to maintain optimum hydrological and biological parameters for the crop. Moreover, the effluent shows hydrobiological characteristics (minerals, phytoplankton biomass and organic matter) significantly higher than that of the receiving environment. Separate surveys were carried out in a bay (CH Bay) with a medium-size intensive farm (30 ha) (PO) and in a mangrove-lined creek (TE Creek) near a larger semi-intensive farm (133 ha) (SO). Net loads of nitrogen exported from the semi-intensive farm and the intensive farm amounted to 0.68 and 1.36 kg ha(-1) day(-1), respectively. At CH Bay, discharge effects were spatially limited and clearly restricted to periods of effluent release. The high residence time at site TE favoured the installation of a feedback system in which organic matter was not exported. Mineralization of organic matter led to the release of nutrients, which in turn, caused in an increased eutrophication of this ecosystem. The study of the pico- and nanophytoplankton assemblages showed (i) a shift in composition from picophytoplankton to nanophytoplankton from offshore towards the coast and (ii) a shift within the picophytoplankton with the disappearance of Prochlorococcus and the increase of picoeucaryotes towards the shoreline. These community changes may partially be related to a nitrogen enrichment of the environment by shrimp farm discharges. Thus, in view of the recent addition of the New Caledonian lagoon to the UNESCO World Heritage list, the data presented here could be a first approach to quantify farm discharges and evaluate their impact on the lagoon. "Summer syndrome" in Litopenaeus stylirostris grow out ponds in New Caledonia: zootechnical and environmental factors Auteur(s) : Lemonnier, Hugues Herbland, Alain Salery, Lucas Soulard, Benoit Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo, is responsible for one of the two main seasonal mortalities which affect shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia. It was identified for the first time in December 1997 in an intensive shrimp farm (called farm DF) and has been enzootic ever since. The "Summer syndrome" affects shrimp during warm-season growout. Although the geographic area concerned is limited, it is a potential threat for the industry in that the disease could spread. Analysis of grow out data from 1991 to 2002 in this farm was carried out in order to characterize the disease and the environmental conditions in relation to mortality. Results of farm DF were compared to data from farms not affected by the disease (called farms HC). The "Summer syndrome" occurs during the warm season which is characterized by an increase in water temperature and sunny duration. This disease is characterized by simultaneously highest densities and weakest drying duration between crops in the farms studied. Between 1991 and 2002, the increase of feed input and nitrogen rate in feed has led to a significant increase of the growth rate over the years in farm DF. At the same time, water management has not changed and has induced an increase in environmental waste production. In consequence, an early eutrophication of water is observed, which is concomitant with the beginning of the mortality outbreaks. This could play a role by inducing directly or indirectly a stress for shrimp and/or a growth and/or virulence factors of the pathogen.
