Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica is said to be the "birthplace of Jamaican tourism." When Captain Lorenzo Dow Baker, president and director of the Boston Fruit Company, built the island’s first hotel, the Queen Anne Titchfield Hotel in 1891. In 1890, the Jamaica Hotels Law was passed to encourage hotel construction to create the needed lodgings for the Jamaica International Exhibition planned for 1891. The hotel was once owned by Hollywood film star Errol Flynn. In the late 1960s, the hotel was destroyed by fire. In the image, there is an automobile, featuring the hotel's name, parked outside the hotel. The sign on one of the hotel's buildings reads "Rafting arranged, inquire at the desk." The singularity of the spaces is too often overlooked because of the strength of fantasized representations of the tropical island which is seen as a paradise, a place of accomplishment desires unlimited with an easy life, with its sunny shores, between coral reefs and white sandy beaches lined with coconut trees. These intangible wealth are based on real resources, abundant and vulnerable, like the emblematic image of coral reefs. Although the tropical island destinations are not supported the weight of the major touristic regions of the world but their flows should be reconsidered in the light of the characteristics of these territories (small size, load population, shortage of land, limits of resources) that require defining specific indicators. But the advent of mass tourism in these last frontiers, these "Pleasure Periphery" needs to question the sustainability of tourism development strategies. Cette étude souligne l’importance des enjeux touristiques pour les îles tropicales. La singularité des espaces est trop souvent négligée en raison de la vigueur des représentations fantasmées de l’île tropicale qui est perçue tel un lieu paradisiaque, un lieu d’accomplissement de désirs illimités où s’écoule une vie facile, avec ses rivages ensoleillés, entre récifs coralliens et plages de sable blanc bordées de cocotiers. Ces richesses immatérielles reposent sur des ressources bien réelles, abondantes et vulnérables, à l’image des emblématiques récifs coralliens. Certes les destinations insulaires tropicales ne connaissent pas les niveaux de fréquentation des grandes régions du monde, mais leurs flux doivent être reconsidérés au regard des caractéristiques de ces territoires (faible superficie, charge de population, rareté de la terre, limites des ressources) qui nécessitent la définition d’indications spécifiques. Mais l’avènement d’un tourisme de masse dans ces ultimes frontières, ces « Pleasure Periphery » nécessite de s’interroger sur la viabilité des stratégies de développement mises en œuvre autour du tourisme. “All the world's a stage”: Creating Guanajuato, Mexico’s Tourism Image Auteur(s) : Asch, Claudia Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : This paper will analyze the tourism image the municipal and state tourism offices of Guanajuato, Mexico, a World Heritage site, aim to project through their promotional materials: a small, colonial city, whose streets are shown as empty, cobble-stoned, and set in romantic light. The "city of Cervantes in the Americas" (a title bestowed by UNESCO in 2005 to honor the theatrical tradition of Cervantes plays in Guanajuato) appears to want to set forth an image of tranquility and spaciousness, while the reality is much different: Guanajuato's mainly narrow and windy streets typically bustle, plazas and gardens are full of activity, in short, the town is alive, yet its projected image lacks liveliness. Furthermore, although it is a World Heritage site, Guanajuato has thus far not used that brand to its advantage; instead, Guanajuato has recently had a variety of slogans to promote itself, seemingly at the whim of officials. Through interviews with tourism officials and a selection of collected tourism materials, I show how the city has yet to establish a “coherent” brand, and is going through various phases of place marketing at once. Cette étude analyse l'image touristique et le projet touristique des municipalités et des offices de tourisme de l'État de Guanajuato, au Mexique. La «ville de Cervantès dans les Amériques" (un titre décerné par l'UNESCO en 2005 pour honorer la tradition théâtrale de Cervantès joue dans Guanajuato) semble vouloir assoir une image de tranquillité et d'espace, alors que la réalité est bien différente: l’image projetée de la ville de Guanajuato est loin de refléter la vie animée des places et jardins, des ruelles étroites coloniales. Force est de constater que la ville n’a pas encore su tirer profit de sa reconnaissance en tant que site du patrimoine mondial. Les slogans évoluent au gré des fonctionnaires qui organisent en charge de ce secteur. Par le biais d'entrevues avec des fonctionnaires du tourisme et une sélection de matériaux recueillis tourisme, l’auteure montre comment la ville passe par différentes phases marketing sans avoir établie une image cohérente de la destination. Université des Antilles Description : Selon le Professseur Frédéric Lefrançois, les multiples facettes de l'univers conceptuel échafaudé à travers la poétique d'Edouard Glissant confèrent à sa pensée la profondeur et la richesse d'un opus magnum habité par l'incessante question de la Relation. En son principe, cette idée maîtresse agit à l'image d'un architecte investi d'une mission singulière : celle de faire advenir de l'informe et du multiforme, un plan, une carte, pour assister dans ses avancées l'avenir des cultures en contact. Ainsi, en substance, cette relation est à la fois organique - en ce qu'elle a trait à l'agrégation du divers et du composite - et synthétique, parce qu'elle génère une poétique du divers dans laquelle le tout et la partie entrent en résonance... Ordo ab chao. En ces trois mots tiennent donc l'essence et la finalité d'un propos tour à tour translucide ou opaque, selon le dessein visé, et qu'il nous appartient aujourd'hui de saisir. En pareille matière, l'élan des métaphores, puisé d'un substrat psychosociologique d'une rare densité, s'avère un puissant allié. S'y adjoint la quête de vérité expérientielle, qui n'épargne en rien les aspects problématiques de l'antillanité. Selon quelles modalités passe-t-on des ténèbres à la lumière ? Sur quelle trame conceptuelle et poétique l'écheveau de la mémoire est-il tissé ? Faut-il y voir la tracée d'une destinée manifeste ou l'ambition scripturaire d'un démiurge ? Le Professeur envisage de contribuer à cette investigation en mettant au jour le dénominateur commun entre les fractions d'identité où le génie créateur glissantien se dévoile pour se mettre au service d'une langue poétique nouvelle. Patrimoine culturel festif et tourisme : une interaction en question : Quelle stratégie pour la Martinique, la Guadeloupe et la Guyane ? Auteur(s) : Nicolas-Bragance, Fabiola Auteurs secondaires : Antilles-Guyane Saffache, Pascal Résumé : La valorisation du patrimoine culturel, matériel et immatériel, trouve sa justification en tant que vecteur de différenciation, dans un contexte où le seul modèle touristique de type fordiste ne fait plus recette. Ce patrimoine dans lequel l’homme place du subjectif, des référents culturels et affectifs, voire même des symboles, serait donc à considérer comme une ressource, un vecteur de distinction des territoires, tant il est pourvoyeur d’authenticité. Ainsi, lorsqu’il joue un rôle de marqueur identitaire, le patrimoine peut-être mobilisé par les acteurs impliqués dans le développement local qui ont le souci de se démarquer et de mettre en avant leurs ressources les plus spécifiques, à des fins de développement économique.Les ressources culturelles festives, à l’image des carnavals antillais et guyanais et du Tour des yoles rondes de la Martinique, en plus de montrer un lien entre une identité locale, des traditions et un lieu, confèrent de la lisibilité et de la transparence aux territoires qu’elles investissent. Les fêtes locales sont, en effet, des formes spatiales vectrices de territorialité qui donnent à voir des formes d’enracinement et d’attachement aux lieux. C’est d’ailleurs la « cristallisation collective » (Jeudy, 2008) qui se joue autour de ces manifestations patrimoniales festives, qui contribue à leur conférer de la consistance ainsi qu’une non négligeable valeur marchande. A n’en point douter, elles ont la faculté d’établir la Guadeloupe, la Martinique et la Guyane dans le cadre de la distinction, de l’attractivité et de la compétitivité. Néanmoins, n’est ce point utopique de croire, que la valorisation du patrimoine culturel festif des départements étudiés pourrait significativement participer à asseoir la pérennisation du tourisme ? En effet, l’organisation de la fête, surtout lorsqu’elle a une dimension identitaire poussée à son paroxysme, peut conduire au repli d’une société localisée sur elle-même. Partant de ce postulat, la rencontre entre touristes et populations locales peut s’avérer compromise, alors même que ces manifestations culturelles disposent de nombreux atouts à même de satisfaire un public touristique en quête d’authenticité et de vacances divertissantes. Cette rencontre est-elle souhaitée par les uns et les autres ? Est-elle seulement souhaitable ? Le patrimoine culturel festif peut-il sous-tendre une vraie activité touristique, tout en demeurant le garant d’une certaine stabilité sociale ? La prudence ne voudrait-elle pas qu’il faille plutôt craindre la menace qui pèse sur les biens culturels devenus trop rapidement des produits touristiques ?En réalité, les relations sont complexes entre une culture mise en fête et le développement du secteur touristique. Faut-il pour autant les considérer comme un « pari de l’inutile » (Lazzarotti, 2011) ?Le tourisme doit continuer à se penser comme un secteur économique indispensable au développement local, dans une perspective de durabilité. C’est d’ailleurs à ce titre que le volet social du développement durable trouve sa place au cœur même de notre réflexion, tant il constitue une composante majeure de ce que devrait être un produit touristique attractif et adapté aux substrats locaux. C’est ainsi que cette thèse explore et approfondit la problématique de la mise en relation entre un secteur touristique à pérenniser, et le riche patrimoine culturel festif dont disposent la Martinique, la Guadeloupe et la Guyane. Ce travail de recherche poussent encore un peu plus loin la réflexion autour du développement de pratiques touristiques renouvelées et durables. This is also the "collective crystallization" (Jeudy, 2008) that plays around these festive heritage demonstrations, which helps give them substance and a significant market value. A no doubt, they have the ability to establish Guadeloupe, Martinique and Guyana as part of the award, the attractiveness and competitiveness. However, this is unrealistic enough to believe that the enhancement of cultural heritage festive departments surveyed could significantly participate in sit sustainability of tourism? Indeed, the organization of the party, especially when it has a dimension of identity pushed to its limits, can lead to the decline of localized on society itself. Based on this assumption, the encounter between tourists and local populations may be compromised, even though these cultural events have many assets to satisfy even a tourist public in search of authenticity and fun holiday. This meeting it is desired by each other? Is it just desirable? The festive cultural heritage may underlie it a real tourist activity, while remaining a guarantor of social stability? Prudence does not she want that rather we should fear the threat to cultural property became too quickly tourism products? Actually, relationships are complex between a culture festival setting and development of the tourism sector. Should we all be regarded as a "bet the useless" (Lazzarotti, 2011)? Tourism must continue to think as an essential local economic development sector, with a view to sustainability. It is also for this reason that the social pillar of sustainable development finds its place at the heart of our thinking, as it is a major component of what should be an attractive tourism product adapted to local substrates. Thus this thesis explores and deepens the problem of linking between tourism to sustain, and the rich cultural heritage festive available Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyana. Montego Bay, Saint James, Jamaica became popular as a sea bathing destination when in 1906 Doctor Alexander James McCatty donated the land to the community and rumors spread that the waters off this beach had health benefits. The beach received its name from Doctor McCatty and his physician friends and because the original entrance was through a cave, which was destroyed in a 1932 hurricane. The image is of tourists sea bathing in the Caribbean Sea while children play in the sand of Doctor's Cave Beach. Le « tourisme d’aventure organisé », nouvelle utopie touristique ? Cas du trekking au Maroc Auteur(s) : Charbonnier, Annabelle Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Parler de « tourisme d’aventure organisé », dans le contexte actuel des pratiques de loisirs en plein air, est-il une aberration ? Cet oxymore ne permettrait-il pas de rendre compte des ambivalences d’une pratique touristique qui aspire à profiter des avantages de la combinaison de ces deux formes de tourisme, d’aventure et organisé ? Le terme « trekking » est considéré à la fois comme un terme spécifique et comme un effet de mode et de marketing. Cette duplicité lui procure sa spécificité : un tourisme fondé sur l’aventure, la nature et la découverte culturelle pourtant inséré dans un système marketing très organisé. Pleine nature, culture, sociabilité sont donc tantôt la principale motivation du voyage, tantôt une des raisons (ou les trois raisons) qui décident le plus souvent à voyager dans les montagnes marocaines. Ainsi, les motivations à participer à un voyage organisé dans l’Atlas marocain deviennent de plus en plus hétérogènes et concernent des publics variés. Les imaginaires et les rêves se retrouvent alors littéralement supplantés par la combinaison, parfois contradictoires, des motivations.Forte d’avoir développé ce type de séjours, l’industrie touristique a ainsi récupéré ces pseudo-imaginaires et on assiste aujourd’hui à l’assimilation de ces derniers par les professionnels et les touristes. Expérience aventureuse et marché de l’aventure se font donc face et encouragent l’émergence d’une nouvelle utopie touristique. Talking about "organized tourism of adventure" in the present context of outdoor leisure activities, an aberration is it? This oxymoron could be explained by the ambivalence on tourist practices that take advantage of the combination of these two forms of tourism, isn't it? "Trekking" is considered both as a specific term and as a marketing term. This duplicity gives it his specificity: a tourism based on adventure, nature and cultural discovery; nevertheless, it is included into a very organized marketing system. Wilderness, culture, sociability are sometimes the main motivations of a trip in Moroccan mountains, or sometimes they constitute one of the main reasons. In addition, motivations to participate to an organized trip in Atlas are becoming more and more diverse and affect various travelers. Imagination and dreams are supplanted by a combination, sometimes contradictory, of motivations. Tourist industry renewed these pseudo-imagination and we are now seeing their assimilation by both professionals and tourists. Adventurous experiences and industry of adventure face each other and encourage the emergence of a new tourist utopia. Bali (Indonésie) : le patrimoine culturel contre ou avec le développement touristique ? Un paradis en sursis et le risque d’un tourisme de luxe non maîtrisé Auteur(s) : Michel, Franck Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Cet article traite de la spécificité de l’activité touristique à Bali, fondée sur une identité locale forte et un riche patrimoine naturel et culturel mais aussi troublante en raison de l’importance et la complexité des jeux d’acteurs, ou encore des contextes sociaux, religieux et géopolitiques propres à ce territoire insulaire. Nous analyserons les liens pérennes ou non entre patrimoine et développement en focalisant sur ce qui fait l’image de marque de Bali sur les plans touristique et politique : le tourisme culturel. Cette étude de cas illustre les dynamiques d’acteurs dans le cadre de l’île de Bali où l’on constate une forte imbrication entre tourisme international, protection de l’environnement et promotion du patrimoine culturel. Vendue comme un paradis tropical, perçue comme l'île des Dieux, Bali se voit contrainte de mesurer les risques d'un tourisme culturel qui se transformerait trop rapidement en culture touristique. Des pistes seront proposées afin d’encourager l’ensemble des acteurs à œuvrer pour que le « dernier paradis » (last paradise) ne devienne pas un « paradis perdu » (lost paradise). Since the 1930s, Bali has been generally seen as a traditional tourism destination quite fashionable. Nowadays, a new kind of tourism, rather esoteric if not totally spiritual, is emerging on this small “paradise” often referred as a natural untouched and cultural preserved island. To attire more international tourists, the “Island of Gods”, as the tourism promoters still name this tropical holiday paradise, is now also targeting on the industry of “well-being”. This article deals about the specificity of the local tourism activity which is based on a strong cultural identity and a rich natural and also religious heritage. Uncontrolled development of this predatory industry brings also a lot of new problems, such as pollution or acculturation. Here, our aim is to focus and analyse the real and false ties between heritage, development and tourism, always by keeping in mind that the regional motto about tourism policy still is to encourage “cultural tourism” as a real model (a “brand”, in fact) of success. We especially try to explain, in this current work (still in progress), the touristic situation in the main cultural site located on the island: Ubud. This small city, really boosting during the last decade, is worldwide reputed for the rich cultural performances and seen as “the” artistic capital of Bali. Ubud offers also a perfect example of an intense and dynamic bond between cultural heritage and economic development. Often for the best and sometimes also for the worse. In this rural but international spot, it seems that tourism business allows the local population to live in better ways and, sometimes, even to reborn, culturally speaking! Our case study shows also the big threats behind the current tourism policy: the large scale business occurred by globalization and all the tourism opportunities thus provided cannot hide the real weakness that for sure also concern the balinese way of thinking and living. Cultural tourism could rapidly be transformed in a dangerous kind of tourism of the culture, with all the big (and bad) changes the Balinese don’t want to see happening on their lovely and holy island. So, the present reflection conducts us to think more deeply on some new and alternative ways of developing tourism in Bali. Finally, our aim is to think, first by listening to the desire of the Balinese themselves, in which best manner this “last paradise” will not become a “lost paradise”.
