Résumé : The subcellular fractionation of the digestive gland cells of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis was performed to investigate the distribution of metals between organelles and cytosol and the different cytosolic fractions separated by gel-filtration chromatography. Total metal concentrations vary over 3 orders of magnitude, ranging from dwt for Pb to dwt for Zn. With the exception of Cd, Co, and Cu, metals were mostly bound to the organelles. Whereas no specific organelle compartment was found for Mn, Ph, and Zn, Fe was mainly associated with nucleus, brown body, and "boule" fraction (i.e., 52%) and 44% of the total Ag was contained in the lysosomal and mitochondria enriched fraction. The link of metals with hydrosoluble proteins in the cytosolic fraction was investigated at 254 and 280 not. Direct relationship between cytosolic metal and metallothioneins could only be established for Ag and Cu, whereas Cd and Zn seem to mainly bind high (> 70 kDa) and low (< 4 kDa) molecular weight proteins.

Résumé : Chemical tracers (e. g. stable isotopes or trace metals) are increasingly used to study trophic ecology and feeding habits of marine organisms and various factors can affect their values. The aim of the present study was to provide information on ontogenic effects on stable carbon and nitrogen values (delta C-13 and delta N-15) and on cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) concentrations in 5 cephalopod species from the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic Ocean). To this end, individuals belonging to 3 species showing the widest range of sizes were analysed for muscle delta C-13 and delta N-15 values and muscle Hg, and digestive gland Cd concentrations. Results showed that stable isotope ratios allowed discrimination of specific feeding strategies during ontogenesis. Segregation between 5 cephalopod species in terms of trophic ecology was also evidenced (different isotopic niches). In contrast, Hg concentrations varied over the same order of magnitude in these 5 cephalopod species, despite higher levels in the benthic octopus Eledone cirrhosa. Consistently, Hg concentrations followed the same ontogenic pattern and increased with increasing body size/age of cephalopods. Finally, Cd concentrations varied over 3 orders of magnitude among the 5 species. Despite possible effects of physiology in terms of metal bioaccumulation, Cd concentrations were likely to reflect specific feeding preferences or feeding zones and ontogenic variability within a single species. Thus, ontogenic effects have to be taken into account when stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen or trace metals are used as ecological tracers; the best recommendation being to focus on a given class age.

Résumé : Total (T-Hg) and organic (O-Hg) mercury concentrations and tissue distribution were examined in 20 species of cephalopods (n = 278) from the north eastern Atlantic waters, i.e. from the Bay of Biscay to the Faroe Islands. Concentrations of T-Hg in whole cephalopods showed elevated variations among species, i.e. from 40 to 3560ng g(-1) dwt, but a low variability within each species (mean CV%=39%). With the exception of oceanic squids, the digestive gland globally displayed higher T-Hg concentrations than the remaining tissues. In contrast, O-Hg concentrations determined in selected species were generally higher in the remaining tissues. Despite higher T-Hg concentrations, the digestive gland weakly contributed to the total body burden of both T-Hg and O-Hg (< 25% and < 15%, respectively). In fact, from 75% to 95% of the T-Hg and O-Mg were contained in the muscular remaining tissues. Therefore, O-Hg may have a strong affinity to proteins in cephalopods. Sex and size only significantly influenced the bioaccumulation of Hg for the Loliginidae family. T-Hg and O-Hg concentrations were also influenced by geographical origin: Celtic Sea > Bay of Biscay > Faroe Islands, corresponding to the seawater Hg concentrations in these areas. In the Faroe Islands and the Celtic Sea, benthic cephalopods contained significant higher Hg concentrations compared to pelagic ones. This suggests that diet is not the main pathway of Hg uptake in cephalopods as pelagic species were expected to be more exposed to O-Hg through fish consumption than benthic ones. Résumé : During the present study, we aimed at providing a first look at the elemental composition of the early stages of cephalopods as an approach to their elemental requirements in culture. Essential and non-essential elemental profiles of the European cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, the European squid Loligo vulgaris and the common octopus Octopus vulgaris laboratory hatchlings and wild juveniles were analysed. In addition, for O. vulgaris we determined elemental profiles of mature ovary, eggs in different stages of development and followed possible effects of four dietary treatments during paralarval rearing, also analyzing elemental content of the live preys Artemia nauplii and Maja brachydactyla hatchling zoeae. Content was determined for essential (As, Ca, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Rb, S, Sr, Zn) and non-essemial (Ag, Al, Ba, Cd, Hg, Pb) elements. The content in non-essential elements found in hatchlings and juveniles of the three species analyzed here seems to be far lower in comparison with subadult and adult stages of coastal cephalopods. In the octopus eggs, the non-essential element concentrations remained globally low compared to hatchlings and juveniles indicating the absorption of these elements along the ontogenefic development. The elemental composition of the octopus ovary and of the eggs, hatchlings and juveniles of the three cephalopod species analyzed here showed a high content in S. As expected, the calcified internal shell of the cuttlefish, rich in Ca and Sr, originates the main difference between species. It is remarkable the richness in Cu of hatchling octopus, that may indicate a particular nutritional requirement for this element during the planktonic life. The reared octopus paralarvae feed on Artemia nauplii, a prey with relatively low Cu content, showed nearly half Cu content that the "natural" profile of octopus hatchlings or wild juveniles. This suggests a dietary effect and/or an indication of the poor physiological stage of the Artemia-fed paralarvae. At the present, the percentage of essential element absorption by food or seawater is unknown for cephalopods and should be determined in the future to understand their feeding requirements in culture. Résumé : Proteinases from hepatopancreas (HP) and gastric juice (GJ) from wild and cultured red octopus (Octopus maya) were characterized. Hepatopancreas assays revealed optimal activity at pH 4, 9-10 and 10 for wild and pH 3, 8, and 9, for cultured octopuses, for total proteinases, trypsin and chymotrypsin, respectively. In the gastric juice, maximum activity was recorded at pH 6, 8, and 7 for total proteinases, trypsin, and chymotrypsin, respectively for both wild and cultured octopus. A reduction on enzyme activity of 70 and 20% was observed in HP and GJ extracts, respectively when protease inhibitor Pepstatin A was used. That result suggests that the main proteases in the HP were aspartic acid proteinases type (possibly Cathepsin D) and some of them were present in the GJ. Dissociating discontinuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed activity bands between 20 and 28, 30 and 34, 35 and 45, 60 and 70 kDa, and a last one between 75 and 100 kDa. We concluded that extracellular digestion of O. maya takes place in an acid environment, around pH 6. In contrast, intracellular digestion in the HP is developed at pHs between 3 and 4, where cathepsin D could be the most important enzyme for O. maya.

Résumé : The dwindling of the stocks of some marine animals traditionally fished is driving the producers to consider the exploitation of species which were seen as of lesser interest up to now. Among the latter, cephalopods hold a specific position. In the first place, they are not a new resource so to speak, having been eaten in Asian and Mediterranean countries for a long time, and, above all, they've been the object of a growing interest for a few years now. It is encouraging to see that this tendency is very distinct in our country where it can be thought that producers and consumers are now aware of the value of this abounding species. The actions aimed at optimising their exploitation are thus facilitated but they suffer from the imprecision of the statistical data on the fisheries. This data is indeed necessary to evaluate the availability of the stocks and to direct the production through a rational management.
L'amenuisement des stocks de certains animaux marins traditionnellement pêchés amène les producteurs à envisager l'exploitation d'espèces jusqu'à présent considérées comme de moindre intérêt. Parmi ces dernières, les céphalopodes occupent une place particulière. En premier lieu, ils ne constituent pas à proprement parler une ressource nouvelle, ayant de tous temps été consommés dans les pays asiatiques et méditerranéens, et surtout, depuis quelques années, ils suscitent un intérêt croissant dans nombre de pays. II est encourageant de constater que cette tendance est particulièrement nette dans notre pays où tout porte à croire •que producteurs et consommateurs ont pris conscience de la valeur de cette ressource disponible en abondance. Les actions destinées à optimaliser l'exploitation en sont facilitées mais se heurtent à l'imprécision des données statistiques sur les pêcheries. Ces dernières deviennent indispensables si l'on veut évaluer la disponibilité des stocks et orienter la production par une gestion rationnelle. On observe de plus qu'une étendue de plus en plus importante du domaine maritime tombe inévitablement sous le coup de réglementations locales ou internationales qui s'appuient très largement sur les statistiques de pêche. Si nous voulons aider efficacement les producteurs, nous devons disposer de données complètes et objectives. Sans attendre que soit atteint ce degré de précision, nous avons voulu aborder une étape plus élémentaire en réunissant les informations relatives à l'état actuel de l'exploitation des céphalopodes et aux solutions pour la développer. Résumé : Market position and its evolution were analysed in nine key fish and cephalopod species subject to long-term changes, using the Bay of Biscay fisheries as a case study. Although such long term changes have already been documented, and in some cases shown to be related to the impacts of fishing, changes in the physical environment, or both, relatively little work has been devoted to their potential consequences in economic terms. The nature and extent of these consequences was determined in the present study by looking at the composition of the affected fish production, and the status of different fish products on the markets. We propose a methodology to characterize market position for this set of nine species. The selected species represent a significant part of the gross turnover of French fishing fleets operating in the bay. These species were characterized in terms of their potential sensitivity to fishing and changes in environmental conditions due to global warming. We separated species potentially positively (Engraulis encrasicolus and Lophius budegassa) and negatively affected (Pollachius pollachius and Lophius piscatorius) by warming. Evolution of the value of production of the nine species was then depicted using analysis of macro-economic index (production and potential consumption) and price indices. This revealed the relatively high sensitivity of domestic production to the market crisis that occurred in France in the early 1990s, compared to imported and exported products. The relative position of individual species, with respect to the market and its evolution between 1990 and 2005, was analyzed by multi-factorial analysis. Results derived from the analysis clearly distinguish two groups of species, the first characterized by higher prices (monkfish, Nephrops, sole, seabass) and the second by larger volumes available on the French market (pollack, hake, anchovy, sardine, cuttlefish). We conclude that a major part (69 to 87%) of the gross turnover associated with catches of these fish species in the Bay of Biscay remains potentially unaffected by long-term changes related to climate.

Résumé : The specific analysis of preys allows to determine the composition of cuttlefishes alimentary diet in natural conditions. This analysis based on exploitation of stomachal contents shows a majority of Fishes and Brachyura Crustaceans consumed. The alimentary diet with a Fish dominance in winter area (off Belle-Ille island) becomes a Crustacea dominance when adult cuttlefishes come in Morbihan Bay, in March, for reproduction. As for newly-born, they eat exclusively Crustacean Amphipoda and Macrura.
L'analyse spécifique des proies permet de déterminer la composition du régime alimentaire des seiches en milieu naturel. Cette analyse basée sur l'exploitation des contenus stomacaux montre une consommation majoritaire de Poissons et de Crustacés Brachyoures. Le régime alimentaire à dominance Poisson en zone d'hivernage (large de Belle-Ille) devient à dominance Crustacé lorsque les seiches adultes entrent dans le Golfe du Morbihan, en mars, pour s'y reproduire. Par contre, les nouveau-nés se nourrissent exclusivement de Crustacés Amphipodes et Macroures

Résumé : The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. Our results showed that the demersal assemblages of the Gulf of Lions exhibited strong spatial structuring, mainly orientated along a bathymetric gradient. This gradient is structured around three major regions: the coast, the continental shelf and the continental slope. Despite sampling variations that occurred during the course of the study, the analysis showed a high degree of reproducibility for this spatial pattern. With the exception of Mullus surmuletus, the species considered in this investigation exhibit limited variations in their spatial distribution. Finally, in the absence of log-books covering the activities of commercial fishing vessels, these findings constitute a base of reference for the analysis of the dynamics of fishing fleets exploiting the demersal resources of the Gulf of Lions.
Ce travail porte sur une série de campagnes de chalutage de fond réalisé dans le golfe du Lion entre 1983 et 1992. Une nouvelle méthode fondée sur le couplage de la technique multitableaux STATIS et de l'analyse factorielle des correspondances (AFC) est proposée afin d'étudier l'organisation spatio-temporelle des assemblages démersaux, poissons et quelques céphalopodes, en terme de composition spécifique. Cette version AFC de STATIS a fourni une représentation claire de la part stable de l'organisation spatiale des assemblages. De plus, elle nous a permis d'appréhender les variations interannuelles de la distribution de chaque population autour de la structure de référence. Nos résultats montrent que les assemblages démersaux du golfe du Lion présentent une forte structuration spatiale, principalement orientée selon un gradient bathymétrique. Ce dernier est structuré en trois grandes régions: la côte, le plateau continental et le talus continental. En dépit des variations d'échantillonnage survenues au cours de la période d'étude, l'analyse a mis en évidence une forte reproductibilité de ce schéma d'organisation. A l'exception de Mullus surmuletus, les espèces considérées dans ce travail présentent des variations limitées de leur distribution spatiale. Enfin, en l'absence de livres de bord sur l'activité des navires professionnels, ces résultats constituent une base de référence pour l'analyse de la dynamique des flottilles exploitant les ressources démersales dans le golfe du Lion.

Résumé : L'analyse des structures dures/calcifiées des organismes aquatiques (poissons, mollusques, cephalopodes...) constitue souvent la base d'études en écologie /biologie des populations et plus particulièrement dans l'étude du fonctionnement des populations. Leur analyse apporte des données telles que l'âge et la croissance, indispensables au développement de modèles en dynamique de populations (stock-recrutement, individus centrés, CMR) et permettent de prendre en compte la variabilité biologique. Ces structures dures sont aussi utilisées pour des caractérisations génétique et environnementale de l'individu. De fait, l'utilisation de ces structures contribue au développement et à la mise en œuvre de méthodes permettant une caractérisation plus précise de l’individu et une meilleure intégration du niveau individuel au fonctionnement des populations. Enfin, l'archivage de ces structures et/ou des données issues de leur analyse permet de constituer un jeu de données historiques fiable pour étudier l'impact du changement climatique. Dans ce contexte, il importe de pouvoir renforcer les études sur ces structures et leur utilisation en écologie halieutique, et de connaître les démarches utilisées par la communauté scientifique française. C'est ce qui est proposé dans le cadre de ce workshop dont un programme thématique vous est joint. Couplant conférences et tables rondes, ce séminaire doit permettre de discuter des aspect techniques des différentes utilisations de ces structures dures et des méthodes de validation développées ou à mettre en place dans le cas de certaines de ces utilisations. Il devrait permettre aussi de fédérer la communauté scientifique française qui travaille sur les pièces calcifiées.

Résumé : Depuis l'extension de la Zone Economique Exclusive française à 200 milles au large des côtes de la Guyane française (Amérique du sud), une flottille d'environ soixante dix chalutiers industriels battant pavillon français, exploite le stock de crevettes pénéïdes (Penaeus subtilis) présent dans ces eaux. Cette pêcherie est gérée par un système de T.A. C. 's fixé annuellement par la Communauté Européenne. Comme dans de nombreuses autres pêcheries de ce type en eaux sub-tropicales ou équatoriales le taux des prises accessoires est élevé. L'objectif de cette étude a été d'évaluer et de cartographier le volume de ces captures accessoires. Cette analyse devait également permettre de caractériser le peuplement de l'écosystème du plateau guyanais, étude de la biodiversité et des associations, et d'estimer la variabilité de la répartition spatio-temporelle des principales espèces capturées en prises accessoires. Les eaux chaudes de la Guyane sont fréquentées par cinq espèces de tortues marines, les tortues luth Dermochelys coriacea, olivâtre Lepidochelys olivacea, verte Chelonia mydas, imbriquée Eretmochelys imbricata, et caouanne Caretta caretta. En raison de la menace d'embargo américain sur les produits crevettiers guyanais, liée au fait que selon eux, aucune mesure de protection n'est appliquée pour limiter les prises accidentelles de ces tortues, une étude particulière visant à estimer le taux réel de leurs captures a également été menée. Les captures accessoires de la pêcherie de crevettes pénéïdes du plateau continental de la Guyane française, ont représenté environ 99% des prises totales des crevettiers. Ces prises accessoires sont principalement constituées de poissons (96% des captures), et secondairement de quelques espèces de crustacés, de crevettes autres que Penaeus subtilis et de céphalopodes. Sur les 120 espèces de poissons inventoriées dans les captures, seule une dizaine d'entre elles contribue à près de 80% du total de la biomasse apparente estimée. Les autres sont apparues de manière épisodique avec des rendements faibles (inférieurs à 1 kg!30min). La majorité de ces espèces présente des tailles réduites. La variabilité spatiotemporelle de ces captures accessoires est peu marquée. L'analyse des prises accessoires de tortues montre quant à elle, que seule une espèce, la tortue olivâtre (Lepidochelys olivacea), apparaît vulnérable aux chaluts des crevettiers. Les informations recueillies, que ce soit lors des campagnes scientifiques ou lors des enquêtes auprès des professionnels, sont trop succinctes pour être utilisées dans tout calcul d'inférence. La conclusion de cette étude est que les chalutiers industriels guyanais capturent des tortues en prises accessoires, mais que leur nombre total annuel, ainsi que leur variabilité dans le temps et l'espace sont pour l'instant impossible à déterminer. Les résultats de l'étude d'impact des T.E.D. (ou Turtle Excluder Deviee) menée en bassin d'essais ont montré que ces engins n'ont pas d'impact sur le comportement général du chalut. La seule conséquence de leur utilisation réside dans leur risque de colmatage, et donc dans la baisse des rendements de crevettes, estimés à environ 10 %.
