Herein, we contrast five common plot methods differing in shape, size, and effort requirements to estimate tree diversity and aboveground tree biomass (AGB). We simulated the methods across six Neotropical forest sites that represent a broad gradient in forest structure, tree species richness, and floristic composition, and we assessed the relative performance of methods by evaluating the bias and precision of their estimates of AGB and tree diversity. For a given sample of forest area, a several small' (<1ha) sampling strategy led to a smaller coefficient of variation (CV) in the estimate of AGB than a few large' one. The effort (person-days) required to achieve an accurate AGB estimate (<10% CV), however, was greater for the smallest plots (0.1ha) than for a compromise approach using 0.5ha modified Gentry plots, which proved to be the most efficient method to estimate AGB across all forest types. Gentry plots were also the most efficient at providing accurate estimates of tree diversity (<10% CV of Hill number). We recommend the use of the 0.5ha modified Gentry plot method in future rapid inventories, and we discuss a set of criteria that should inform any choice of inventory method. Soils elements stocks, and particularly those of carbon, are in constant evolution under natural factors effect (climate, vegetation, clays content, etc) and anthropic factors effect (soils uses, etc). Our objective is thus, (i) to better understand the relations between soil, farming system and stored carbon quantity, (ii) to study the consequences of soils uses changes and of soils managements changes on organic matter shapes in soil and (iii) to specify organic matter role on soil properties physics.Representative agri-pedological situations of the three great mineralogical models of tropical soils (allophonic soils (not crystallized clays), 1:1 clay soils and 2:1 clay soils) and presenting agricultural systems of various levels of intensification (intensive monocultures intended for export, slightly intensified farming systems, etc) were thus selected in the soils of Martinique. In addition, to limit the effects of their former uses, we generally chose to the minimum 3 years old farming situations. The analysis of the various lands carbon stocks reveals different behaviors: in allophonic soils, a correlation exists between carbon content (or organic stock) and texture (or fine elements content), as well for not cultivated as for cultivated situations. Variations ranges (reduction) of carbon stocks observed under various management soils systems effect, also depends on texture: in sandy soils, carbon sequestration potentiality is low or null, on the other hand, carbon storage potentialities are higher in clay soils. The estimation of total carbon stocks on the scale of Martinique, for one meter of depth and for and average situation between the use soils charts of 1969/70 and 1979/80, rises to 11,859 Mt of C calculated for 95,8% of the surface.Soil organic matter distribution varies with soil texture: in sandy soils, with low contents of organic matter, organics matters are mainly associated with the sandy fractions; in clay soils, richer in organic matters, 50 to 60% of the organic matters are associated with the argillaceous fraction. In the same way, the organic matter dynamics also depends on soil texture: in sandy soils, organic stocks variations are primarily due to carbon loss or accumulation of the sandy fraction; in clay soils, the argillaceous fraction takes part in a dominating way in organic stocks variations of these soils at the time of their setting in culture or meadow; the sand-clay soils have an intermediate behavior between these two poles.Structural stability varies with mineralogy. Andosols (or ALL) present a high degree of aggregation and stability, due to the presence of allophones and their particular association with the organics compounds. In crystallized clay soils, aggregation stability is higher in 1:1 clay soils (or LAC); the lowest values are generally observed in the lands on 2:1 clay soils (or HAC). Moreover, culture setting generally results in aggregation stability reduction.Cultures intensification (frequent ploughings, low organic matter restitutions to the soil, etc) accentuates aggregation stability loss caused by culture setting, particularly in lands on 2:1 clay soils (or HAC). http://www.theses.fr/2012AGUY0513/document | Partager |
Le merlu du golfe de Gascogne et de la mer Celtique : Croissance, Répartition spatiale et bathymétrique, Ecologie alimentaire et Assemblages Auteur(s) : Kacher, Mohamed Éditeur(s) : Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale (Dunkerque) Résumé : In the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea waters, hake is considered as genetically homogeneous and form a unique stock with identical meristic characteristics. The vertebral mean vary from 50,68 (vertebrae) during the first year of life to 51,11 (vertebrae) for adults. 0-group Merluccius display a rapid growth with significant interannual variability (0.71 mm.day-1 in 2001 versus 0.74 mm.day-1 in 2002). The spawning period occurs in April and the average length on the firth January following the hatching is of 17.3 cm (first seasonal check / increment on the sagittal otolith is located about 0.143 cm from the nucleus). At the end of the first year of life the average length is about 24 cm. The longevity of the species is important and growth parameters (L = 138,24 cm ; K = 0,132) explain natural mortality coefficient of M = 0.21. No difference for growth between male and female has been observed for this stock. The ratio total weight / eviscerated weight is equal to Fc = 1,086. Both male and female have same spatial and bathymetric distribution. Juveniles are found in deep waters (< 17 cm length) and move to coastal waters where they display an average length of (33 cm length). Longer individuals are found in nursery areas where they feed and grow then move to deeper areas to spawn. Nursery areas are numerous and located in the Celtic Sea and in the bay of Biscay. In the bay of Biscay, disturbances resulted from hydrondynamics affect the settlement on the nursery grounds particularly in the southern part of the bay. Diet composition varies with age. Juveniles feed mainly on crustaceans (Euphausia kroni). At the length of 23 cm, individuals feed strictly on fishes. Sizes of preys are proportional with sizes of predators and preys are composed mainly of species that feed and reproduce close to the bottom. Cannibalism has been observed for this specie, and increases with age notably in the northern part of the bay of Biscay and in the Celtic Sea. Main preys are 0-group juveniles. This specie is assumed to be a passive predator catching its preys when they come to feed in the bottom. Although they are punctual, these results have been obtained after studies on the evolution of sizes during the first year of life (daily increments measurements) and on the spawning period parameters (back-calculating). Average length on the firth January following hatching and the position of the first seasonal check on the otolith are based on observations of the sizes on the firth January following hatching (obtained with growth rates and spawning period parameters). The results are similar to those described in previous studies, nevertheless they have to be confirmed with growth and diet composition analyses. A long term study appear essential to determine biological and ecological parameters of this species for sustainable management of the stock. Organisation géographique des populations de poissons marins Auteur(s) : Petitgas, Pierre Résumé : The management of marine fish stocks has stayed non-spatial, considering spatial distributions and their consequences on demography as implicit. But the impacts of climate change and the anthropisation of habitats now require to consider spatial procedures explicitly. The work presented here starts with the question of evaluating population abundance, which requires the modelling of spatial distributions (section 1). Then an ecological understanding of the multi-scale nature of distributions is investigated (section 2). Last, we study how demographic population dynamics depends on the spatial organisation of life cycles (section 3). In this work, the approach has been to combine data acquisition at sea with statistical characterisation and modelling. The application of geostatistics to fisheries survey data provided a solution to abundance evaluation and mapping for many different survey designs. A variety of models were implemented (stationary, non-stationary, non-linear, multivariate, spatio-temporal), depending on the statistical characteristics of the data and the problem posed. Sampling bias were identified by combining different survey methods. New procedures for assessing stocks based on indicators including spatial ones were developed, which prepared for ecosystem assessments. (...) (...) Le stock de Lambi (Strombus gigas, L.) en Martinique : analyse de la situation 1986-1987, modélisation de l'exploitation, options d'aménagement Auteur(s) : Rathier, I Rathier, I Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The stock of Lambi, Strombus gigas (gastropod: strombidae), coastal benthic resource, has been exploited artisanally since the prehistoric period in Martinique. Nowadays, three lines of work exploit the species: free diving, nets (since the middle of the century) and scuba diving since 1985. This report presents the activity of each line of work, surveyed directly from 1986 to 1987: fishing zones and resource allocation, production, effort and performance, detail of catches (by length). The socio economic characteristics of the lambi fishermen are studied. The significant production of leisure fishing is also estimated. The decrease in the production and performance, as well as the lowering of the size of the first catch for about thirty years show that the stock is overexploited. The biological phenomenon of the stock: growth of the shell (length and shell lip), growth in weight, acquiring of sexual maturity, natural mortality are studied. The factors of mortality through fishing are estimated by class of length for the current exploitation regime by pseudo-cohort analysis. If the results confirm that the stock is overexploited, the level of overexploitation of the stock cannot be specified because of the presence of a number of lipped adults not yet too exploited in water deeper than 20 metres. The analysis of the dynamic process of the exploited population indicates two ways to the production of the stock: the forcing of the recruitment and the regulation of the exploitation regime. The lack of economic profitability of the production of juveniles over 30 mm and the difficulties raised by their collection in their natural habitat lead to the rationalization of the exploitation. The production and performance (by recruits) simulations performed for different exploitation regimens indicate that the only two conceivable options are the introduction of a minimum catch size, i.e. lambi with forming lip, and the regulation of the fishing effort. The socio-economic implications of the introduction of the determined management measures show that their applicability level is very low, because of the Martinique fishermen polyactivity, their low socio-economic level and mostly because of the free access to the resource. As a consequence, it is suggested to create new professional structures with a wide jurisdiction, in order to locally manage the marine areas, their use and their resources. Mercury in the Lot-Garonne River system (France): Sources, fluxes and anthropogenic component Auteur(s) : Schafer, Jörg Blanc, Gerard Audry, S Cossa, Daniel Bossy, C Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Dissolved and particulate Hg fluxes in the Lot-Garonne-Gironde fluvial-estuarine system were obtained from observation of daily discharge and suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations. In addition to the measurements of the total dissolved (< 0.45 gm) and particulate Hg (> 0.45 gm), called HgTD and HgTp respectively, the dissolved inorganic Hg species (HgRD) were determined monthly. Geochemical background values for HgTp in sediments and SPM were similar to crustal values and to typical concentrations in SPM of non-contaminated river systems, respectively. The Riou Mort watershed already known as the origin of important historical polymetallic (e.g., Cd, Zn) pollution was identified as an important Hg point source. In the downstream Lot River, Hg concentrations were clearly higher than those in other moderately contaminated systems. The mean relative contribution of HgRD to HgTD in the Lot River and in the Garonne River was close to 25% and 50%, respectively, and showed no correlation with water discharge or SPM concentration. Depending on the origin and nature of SPM, HgTp concentrations were correlated or not with particulate organic C (POC). Maximum HgTp concentrations were measured in samples containing low POC concentrations and were attributed to sediment resuspension. In contrast, high POC concentrations (6-17%) during algal blooms were associated with low/moderate HgTp concentrations (< 0.5 mg kg(-1)) at different sites, suggesting that Hg concentrations in fluvial phytoplankton may be limited by bioavailability of dissolved Hg and/or physiologically controlled Hg accumulation. Mercury was mostly (up to 98%) transported in the particulate phase with estimated annual Hg fluxes at the outlet of the Lot River system ranging from 35 to 530 kg a(-1) for the past decade. The minimum anthropogenic component (58-84% of total Hg fluxes) could not be explained by present Riou Mort point source contributions, suggesting important Hg release from contaminated sediment as a major source and from downstream point sources (e.g., coal-fired power plants and/or metal processing industries). HgTp concentrations and fluxes were strongly related to hydrologic variations and were clearly increased by riverbed dredging during lock construction. Therefore, the estimated Hg stocks in the Lot River sediment (5-13 tons) represent an important potential Hg source for the downstream fluvial-estuarine system. The sea surface tem-perature is explicitly introduced into four natural growth functions, among which the Cobb-Douglas function best adjusts the availabledata. Comprehensive assessment of carbon productivity, allocation and storage in three Amazonian forests Auteur(s) : Malhi, Yadvinder Aragao, Luiz Eduardo O. C. Metcalfe, Daniel B. Paiva, Romilda Quesada, Carlos A. Almeida, Samuel Anderson, Liana Brando, Paulo Auteurs secondaires : School of Geography and the Environment, Environmental Change Institute ; University of Oxford [Oxford] Department of Forest Ecology and Management ; Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences School of Geography, Earth and Biosphere Institute ; University of Leeds Coordenaçao de Botânica ; Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi Department of Botany and School of Natural Resources and Environment ; University of Florida [Gainesville] Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Tulane University ; University of New Orleans Centro de Geociencias ; Universidade Federal do Pará Urban Design and Planning ; University of Washington [Seattle] Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Wiley Résumé : The allocation and cycling of carbon (C) within forests is an important component of the biospheric C cycle, but is particularly understudied within tropical forests. We synthesise reported and unpublished results from three lowland rainforest sites in Amazonia (in the regions of Manaus, Tapajos and Caxiuana), all major sites of the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Programme (LBA). We attempt a comprehensive synthesis of the C stocks, nutrient status and, particularly, the allocation and internal C dynamics of all three sites. The calculated net primary productivities (NPP) are 10.1 +/- 1.4 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) (Manaus), 14.4 +/- 1.3 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) (Tapajos) and 10.0 +/- 1.2 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) (Caxiuana). All errors bars report standard errors. Soil and leaf nutrient analyses indicate that Tapajos has significantly more plant-available phosphorus and calcium. Autotrophic respiration at all three sites (14.9-21.4 Mg C ha yr(-1)) is more challenging to measure, with the largest component and greatest source of uncertainty being leaf dark respiration. Comparison of measured soil respiration with that predicted from C cycling measurements provides an independent constraint. It shows general good agreement at all three sites, with perhaps some evidence for measured soil respiration being less than expected. Twenty to thirty percent of fixed C is allocated belowground. Comparison of gross primary productivity (GPP), derived from ecosystem flux measurements with that derived from component studies (NPP plus autotrophic respiration) provides an additional crosscheck. The two approaches are in good agreement, giving increased confidence in both approaches to estimating GPP. The ecosystem carbon-use efficiency (CUEs), the ratio of NPP to GPP, is similar at Manaus (0.34 +/- 0.10) and Caxiuana (0.32 +/- 0.07), but may be higher at Tapajos (0.49 +/- 0.16), although the difference is not significant. Old growth or infertile tropical forests may have low CUE compared with recently disturbed and/or fertile forests. Tropical forest yield and important part of the aerial vegetation carbon stock on earth. Measuring and understanding this stock distribution is crucial for the management of the tropical forests facing the actual environmental challenges (REDD+, carbon market).Aerial Biomass estimation of forest census plots requires few models depending on the precision of the inventory: diameter models, height models, wood density models. Spatial extrapolation between census plots relies on aerial data (satellite measurements, images) or ground-based data (geology, altitude). The uncertainty of the estimation of a region’s biomass is the result of the uncertainty brought by all these models. The aim of the thesis is to develop models and methods to estimate the biomass of a region while propagating the uncertainties. This is applied to the neo-tropical forest of French Guiana (South America, Guianas Plateau). http://www.theses.fr/2012AGUY0567/document | Partager |
Dynamique des populations marines exploitées. Tome 1. Concepts et modèles Auteur(s) : Laurec, Alain Le Guen, Jean-claude Laurec, Alain Le Guen, Jean-claude Éditeur(s) : CNEXO Résumé : This book constitutes the first of a series of three volumes, the purpose of which is to cover the principal methods used in fish population dynamics. It is devoted to the definition of the main concepts, ami the presentation of the usual mathematical models. The second volume will deal with the fitting of the models, and the estimation of parameters. The third will be devoted to sampling problems. These volumes will be recollections of communications presented during ad hoc seminars, hold in Brest (GSG/COB) in 1980 and 1981. The first part deals with the basic concepts related to the two components whose relationship is being described by the population dynamics, namely the fish stock, to its relations with biological populations, and to the partition of catchabtiity into its components (vulnerability, availability...). The second chapter of this part is devoted to the quantification of exploitation. This leads to a discussion of nominal and effective fishing effort and fishing intensity. A brief review of the use of catch per unit of effort as an index of abundance is followed by a discussion of the concept of fishing power. The second part starts with some general remarks on mathematical modelling (chapter III), then comes to the two classical categories of models : global (surplus production) models (chapter IV), and structural models (chapter V). Chapter IV is mainly a review, based upon the SCHAEFER and PELLATOMLINSON models. Some less classical formulas from the recent literature are also introduced. Attention is paid to the underlying hypotheses and to the limitation of such models. The reader is finally referred to papers presenting the developments that could make it possible to overcome some of these limitations. Chapter V is based upon the classical BEVERTON and HOLT and RlCKER models, and the yield per recruit concepts. This field is however inlarged. Other commonly used variants of structural models are presented with an effort being made to clarify the real differences between all these variants. Special attention is also paid to so-called regenerative models and to the use of spawing-biomass or fecundity per recruit, which are likely to become commonly used in the coming years. In all cases, special attention is paid to the presentation of the basic formulas, that the reader might have to use if faced with a practical problem. Finally, a discussion of the underlying hypotheses takes place, before a brief review of the main developments, where the reader is referred to the appropriate literature. Nonetheless, the relationship between branch and trunk xylem density has been poorly explored in neotropical trees. Here, we examine this relationship in trees from French Guiana and its variation among different families and sites, to improve the understanding of wood density in neotropical forests. Methods : Trunk and branch xylem densities were measured for 1909 trees in seven sites across French Guiana. A major-axis fit was performed to explore their general allometric relationship and its variation among different families and sites. Key results : Trunk xylem and branch xylem densities were significantly positively correlated, and their relationship explained 47% of the total variance. Trunk xylem was on average 9% denser than branch xylem. Family-level differences and interactions between family and site accounted for more than 40% of the total variance, whereas differences among sites explained little variation. Conclusions : Variation in xylem density within individual trees can be substantial, and the relationship between branch xylem and trunk xylem densities varies considerably among families and sites. As such, whole-tree biomass estimates based on non-destructive branch sampling should correct for both taxonomic and environmental factors. Furthermore, detailed estimates of the vertical distribution of wood density within individual trees are needed to determine the extent to which relying solely upon measures of trunk wood density may cause carbon stocks in tropical forests to be overestimated. Reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Reunion Island). Part 2: fecundity and spawning pattern Auteur(s) : Poisson, Francois Fauvel, Christian Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Batch fecundity and relative fecundity of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean were estimated from seven gravid swordfish females (size range 127-225 cm lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) with unovulated, hydrated oocytes collected onboard Reunion-based (France) longline swordfish fishing vessels between December 1999 to January 2001. To investigate the spawning pattern of swordfish, we used data collected through a combination of two at sea sampling regimes. A total of 17 007 geo-located size data of swordfish were recorded during 8 years (1993-2001) and a total of 1727 (size range 75-289 cm, LJFL) swordfish gonads (1107 females and 620 males) were sampled from May 1998 to January 2001. The estimated batch fecundity ranged from 995 000 hydrated oocytes for the smallest ripe female to 4.3 millions for the largest female sampled measuring respectively 127 to 225 cm in curved length (LJFL). The relative fecundity ranged from 25 to 72 hydrated oocytes per gram of body weight. We found that batch fecundity was positively correlated with fish length and that the older/larger females have earlier and longer spawning seasons than younger/smaller females. These findings suggested that older/larger females which are seasonally migrating in this spawning ground seem to play a major role in reproductive success of the species in producing significantly more offspring than younger females during an extended spawning season. Examination of the length-frequency date from the fishery indicated that the young fish are resident around Reunion and around the seamounts off Reunion Island. Our results highlight the important role of the older/larger females in the reproductive capacity of southwestern Indian Ocean stock. We discuss the potential implications of fishing the older/larger females for this stock in terms of reproduction and recruitment. L'economie d'un secteur aquacole : la production de Macrobrachium Rosenbergii en Guyane Auteur(s) : Catanzano, Joseph Résumé : Aquafarming in Guyana (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) finds itself confronted today with a serious economic problem linked to a concurrence of factors of differing origins.
- The absence of markets (an apparently cyclical phenomenon) has hindered many operations and calls into question the producing sector in its current form (See table 5: stock SICA 1987).
But behind this difficulty, other deeper and longer-lasting ones call for questions to be asked. During analysis of the sector, structural blockages appear from the first years of operations, which, combined with the prolonged absence of revenue, accelerates a process of decline (see the spiral of recession in the text). These other factors are:
- 1) An environment that hinders the creation of new farms (difficulties and delay of basin construction sites, wavering about the chosen farming techniques, changes while engaged in operations...)
- 2) A complete unawareness of the true capabilities of markets and competitors.
- 3) An overestimation of possible yields in the first years.
- 4) Underestimating cash flow needs and the consequences of taking out a large loan (see appendix 5, corporate earnings).
- 5) Difficulty with implementing a solid and sustainable business structure.
- 6) A serious and rapid deterioration of relations among the people involved in this production sector caused by a great deal of confusion about the role, attributions and sphere of expertise of each one of them (confusion in particular among IFREMER, France Aquaculture, and Guyane Aquaculture).
Taken all together, these factors mean that we must consider today that the solutions proposed in response to the problem of marketing (See appendix 8 on the DDA proposal and appendix 9 on the GEM report), cannot suffice either to revive discontinued farms or to go ahead with planned projects.
Fluctuations à long terme du thon rouge: validité, origines et conséquences Auteur(s) : Ravier, Christelle Éditeur(s) : Ecole nationale supérieure agronomique de Rennes Résumé : Describe and gain understanding on fluctuations in animal population over time and space is a central goal of population ecology. This is also crucial to ensure the sustainable management of exploited resources, particularly those with complex population dynamics such as the bluefin tuna. The goal of this work is to collect bluefin tuna catches from the ancestral Mediterranean and Atlantic trap fisheries to (i) characterise long-term fluctuations in bluefin tuna population migrating in the Mediterranean, (ii) analyse their causes et (iii) assess their implications for fisheries management. The bluefin tuna main biological and ecological characteristics are first detailed. Then, the first part presents the trap fishery, and the process of collect and validation of the historical catches. This leads to develop a data base of 54 time-series more than 20 years long, the longest ones spanning about four centuries. Mean historical catches were around 15 000 tons/year ([7 000;25 000]). Time-series are analysed in a second part. Temporal variability of trap catches may be decomposed in three components: 100-year-long periodic fluctuations, 20-year cycles and inter-annual variations. These medium- to long-term fluctuations, representing more than 50% of the variability in the time-series, were synchronous all around the western Mediterranean and adjacent North Atlantic. In contrast, short-term variability was synchronous at a local scale only. It is argued that long-term fluctuations in trap catches could be considered as a proxy for those in abundance, and a synthetic time-series is computed to depict them. Biological and ecological processes that could cause such long-term fluctuations are discussed in a third part. We tested whether long-term fluctuations in Atlantic bluefin tuna might be related to large-scale environmental changes, using long time-series of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Length of the Day index (LOD, a proxy of the atmospheric circulation index ACI) and the temperature. Spectral analyses of trap catches, LOD and temperature displayed similar spectra with peak at low frequency, whereas those of the NAO exhibited a broad band spectrum. Regression analyses and tests of correlation did not reveal any clear relationship between trap catches on the one hand and NAO and LOD on the other hand. In contrast, long-term fluctuations in trap catches appear to be negatively and significantly related to long-term trends in temperature. Underlying processes that could explain such a relationship are discussed, with special focus on changes in migration patterns. Finally, implications of such fluctuations in term of fisheries management are discussed in a fourth part. A simulation framework, in which a simulated population dynamics model is coupled with a VPA, is built to test the pertinence of the diagnostic of stock assessment according to different scenarios on fluctuations origins and population status. In the hypothesis of fluctuations linked to variations in the recruitment, VPA appears able to reconstruct the fluctuations but the predictions may be biased if natural fluctuations are not taking into account. In the hypothesis of fluctuations linked to changes in migration pattern, VPA is not able to reconstruct the population dynamics. In a precautionary approach, quotas which follow may be unsuitable in the best case, at worst dangerous if they are defined in comparison with a reference point. The concept of cible reference points, fixe and unique over time, appears not relevant for bluefin tuna; estimate trajectory reference pertinent may prove to be more pertinent. Transitioning economies, human development, and environmental stress can harm this livelihood. Here we focus on a transitioning social-ecological system as a case study (Moorea, French Polynesia). We review fishing practices and three decades of effort and landing estimates with the broader goal of informing management. Fishery activities in Moorea are quite challenging to quantify because of the diversity of gears used, the lack of centralized access points or markets, the high participation rates of the population in the fishery, and the overlapping cultural and economic motivations to catch fish. Compounding this challenging diversity, we lack a basic understanding of the complex interplay between the cultural, subsistence, and commercial use of Moorea's reefs. In Moorea, we found an order of magnitude gap between estimates of fishery yield produced by catch monitoring methods (2 t km −2 ∼ year −1) and estimates produced using consumption or participatory socioeconomic consumer surveys (∼24 t km −2 year −1). Several lines of evidence suggest reef resources may be overexploited and stakeholders have a diversity of opinions as to whether trends in the stocks are a cause for concern. The reefs, however, remain ecologically resilient. The relative health of the reef is striking given the socioeconomic context. Moorea has a relatively high population density, a modern economic system linked into global flows of trade and travel, and the fishery has little remaining traditional or customary management. Other islands in the Pacific in similar contexts in Polynesia such as Hawaii, that continue to develop economically, may have small-scale fisheries that increasingly resemble Moorea. Therefore, understanding Moorea's reef fisheries may provide insight into their future. Thematic mapping of reefs by processing of simulated SPOT satellite data : application to the Trochus niloticus biotope on Tetembia reef (New Caledonia) Auteur(s) : Bour, W Loubersac, Lionel Rual, P Éditeur(s) : Inter-research Résumé : Exploitation of Trochus niloticus is important for Pacific islanders. The shell yields valuable mother of pearl of wich 2.000 tons were exported from New Caledonia in 1978. Knowledge of the exploitable stock requires a good estimate of the surface area occupied by this gastropod which colonises dead coral reefs. Because trochus environments in New Caledonia are very extensive and access is difficult, synoptic methods of estimation are called for. High resolution remote sensing appears to be a particularly suitable method. Simulation of images to be obtained from the French SPOT satellite was carried out in New Caledonia in decemlber 1983. This paper deals with the method used to process the digital high resolution images that will be produced by SPOT. Results are presented as thematic maps of the main reef environment types, with their respective surface areas. Among hard reef bottom covers, the trochus environment was finely analysed and areas identified were compared with ground truth observations and with areial photograph interpretation. The potential usefulness of high resolution SPOT images is confirmed for thematic mapping and evaluation of shallow living reef resources. Experimental quantication of the reactive processes at meso-scale during CO2 injection into carbonated and silicated rocks ; Quantification expérimentale à l'échelle mésoscopique des processus réactionnels dans le cadre de l'injection de CO2 dans des roches carbonatées et silicatées Auteur(s) : Luquot, Linda Auteurs secondaires : Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Université Montpellier II - Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc Philippe Gouze Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : In order to minimize CO2 atmospheric concentration, a solution consists in sequestrating CO2 in geological reservoirs. To estimate long term risks, it is necessary to quantify the couplings between reaction processes as well as structural and hydrodynamical modifications. We realised two experimental benches enabling injecting CO2-enriched-brine in conditions corresponding to in situ storage (T < 200 oC and P < 200 bar) and developed an experimental protocol using X-Ray microtomography and fluid and rock analyses in order to measure the variations of physical and chemical parameters. The study of carbonated reservoirs near the injection well, allows quantifying different k-phi relationships depending on the dissolution processes and triggered by the local fluid chemical composition and initials conditions. Away from the injection well, we observe carbonate precipitation decreasing the permeability. The study of fracturated caprock samples shows that alternative percolation of CO2-enriched-brine and CO2 gas increases the fracture permeability. The study of silicated rocks indicates carbonate precipitation in zeolite sandstone and sintered dunite grains. Nevertheless, in zeolite sandstone we also observe the precipitation of clay particles located in the uid pathways which decrease strongly the permeability.
In order to study the genetic consequences of production of oyster larvae in hatcheries, two factors, specific to hatcheries, were examined: the effect of discarding the smallest larvae (i.e. culling) and the effect of temperature (20°C versus 26°C). A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of larval populations and family assignment, limiting possible environmental bias and allowing the study of a relatively large number of families using a limited number of larval tanks. Our results show that three multiplexed highly polymorphic microsatellite markers are a powerful tool for family assignment and, consequently, for the study of bivalve larvae genetics. Culling, by selective sieving of the smallest larvae is an advantageous practice at a phenotypic scale as it reduced variance in larval size, variance of developmental rate and time to settlement. Culling of 50% of the larval population only led to 15% less spat, showing a positive phenotypic correlation between larval growth and settlement success. However, culling represents a substantial risk for diversity loss, because it increases the variance of reproductive success among parental oysters. The effective population sizes of early settling cohorts of settlement were lower than those of later ones. Our results show that the settlement of slow growing larvae significantly contributes to minimizing the variability of reproductive success and therefore to maximizing genetic diversity. These results corroborate the low estimations of variability of broodstocks sampled in several French commercial hatcheries, relative to natural populations. The genetic composition of the larval population and the resulting spat was significantly different between the two tested temperatures, revealing genotype x environment interaction for survival. Similarly, genotype x environment interaction was also observed for larval growth as a higher temperature exerted a positive influence on the expression of genetic variability for this trait. Consequently, we can conclude that a temperature of 26°C coupled with culling, to common practice in oyster hatcheries, is likely to amplify the selection pressure for fast growing larvae. To test for this hypothesis, we compared larval developmental traits in the progeny of a hatchery broodstock closed for 7 generations, with the progeny of wild oysters and the two possible hybrids. Our results show that selection of fast growing larvae can counteract presumed inbreeding depression, due to higher mean relatedness among hatchery broodstock than in the wild. Genetic effects of intensive rearing conditions at larval stage are significant and should be taken into account in hatchery practices, especially in terms of genetic diversity management.
