Description : Practical uses for Sargassum are sought regionally as our coastlines continue to be flooded by sargassum blooms floating ashore. This study investigated the potential benefits of Sargassum (Sargassum spp.) mulch in sweet potato production at Golden Ridge, St. George, Barbados, during a drought period (November 2015-March 2016). Treatment consisted of combinations of two cultivars of sweet potato (?E? and ?CBS 32?, main-plots) and washed/unwashed Sargassum mulches (sub-plots) of different ages (approximately 4 weeks old and fresh, sub-sub-plots) with four replications. Sargassum mulch was applied to the furrows of plots (6m2) four weeks after planting at a rate of 10 t ha-1 and yield, growth and soil parameters were monitored at periodic intervals. Yield (t ha-1) was highest for the 4-weeks old Sargassum mulch treatment, and the number of marketable tubers was highest for the unwashed 4-weeks old Sargassum treatment. The number of tubers with Euscepes postfaciatus (Scarabee) pest damage was decreased by the Sargassum mulch treatments especially for the 4-weeks old unwashed Sargassum. Vine growth was taller for cultivar ?E? and for the washed Sargassum treatments. Chlorophyll indices were higher in ?CBS 32? than in cultivar ?E? and were lower in Sargassum treated plots. Moisture content in the top 10cm of soil was consistently low and greater in plots of cultivar ?E? than in those of ?CBS 32?. There appears to be some potential for the use of aged Sargassum mulches for improving growth, pest management and yields of sweet potato and further investigations are needed.

Anti-Aspergillus IgG antibodies are important biomarkers for the diagnosis of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). We compared the performance of a new commercial EIA (Bordier Affinity Products) with those of the Bio-Rad and VirionSerion EIAs. This assay is novel in the association of two recombinant antigens with somatic and metabolic antigens of A. fumigatus. In a prospective multicentre study, 436 serum samples from 147 patients diagnosed with CPA (136 sera/104 patients) or ABPA (94 sera/43 patients) and from 205 controls (206 sera) were tested. We obtained sensitivities of 97%, 91.7%, and 86.1%, and specificities of 90.3%, 91.3%, and 81.5% for the Bordier, Bio-Rad and VirionSerion tests, respectively. The Bordier kit was more sensitive than the Bio-Rad kit (p < 0.01), which was itself more sensitive than the VirionSerion kit (p=0.04). The Bordier and Bio-Rad kits had similar specificities (p=0.8), both higher than that of the VirionSerion kit (p=0.02). The areas under the ROC curves confirmed the superiority of the Bordier kit over the Bio-Rad and the VirionSerion kits (0.977, 0.951 and 0.897, respectively; p < 0.01 for each comparison). In a subset analysis of 279 sera tested with the Bordier and Bio-Rad kits and an in-house immunoprecipitin assay (IPD), the Bordier kit had the highest sensitivity (97.7%), but the IPD tended to be more specific (71.2 and 84.7%, respectively; p=0.10).The use of recombinant, somatic and metabolic antigens in a single EIA improved the balance between sensitivity and specificity, resulting in an assay highly suitable for use in the diagnosis of chronic and allergic aspergillosis.

Description : Many rural areas in Suriname are lacking information on technology from extension agents from the government extension agency, and research institutes. Communication and informal voices of farmers are shared by media. As part of a baseline study conducted for the sixth operational strategic plan of the Small Grants Programme in Suriname, four communities were selected: Moengo, Pokigron, Nickerie, Sipaliwini and Para. The purpose of this study was to collect data from communities regarding problems related to climate change, agricultural innovation and landscape management. This qualitative study was done through the focus group method. Eight focus group meetings were organized and consisted of 8-15 participants each. The key questions were extracted from the SEPLS method (Socio-ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes). The data was analyzed through the SWOT method. Based on the results, the communities have a good level of awareness about management of their landscapes. Improvement of agriculture management will be possible by access to innovative and new knowledge developed in and outside the community. Climate change is an important issue that the community already is aware of, they developed their own local strategy in resilience to this issue. Beaucoup de zones rurales au Surinam manquent d'information sur la technologie des agents de vulgarisation de l'agence d'extension de gouvernement, et des instituts de recherche. La communication et les voix informelles des agriculteurs sont partagées par media. En tant qu'élément d'une étude de ligne de base entreprise pour le sixième plan stratégique opérationnel du petit programme de concessions au Surinam, les quatre communautés ont été sélectionnées : Moengo, Pokigron, Nickerie, Sipaliwini et paragraphe. Le but de cette étude était de rassembler des données de communautés concernant des problèmes liés au changement climatique, à l'innovation agricole et à la gestion de paysage. Cette étude qualitative a été faite par la méthode de groupe cible. Huit réunions de groupe cible ont été organisées et se sont composées de 8-15 participants chacun. Les questions clé ont été extraites à partir de la méthode de SEPLS (des paysages et des paysages marins Socio-écologiques de production). Les données ont été analysées par la méthode de BÛCHEUR. Basé sur les résultats, les communautés ont un bon niveau de conscience au sujet de la gestion de leurs paysages. L'amélioration de la gestion d'agriculture sera possible par l'accès aux connaissances innovatrices et nouvelles développées à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur de la communauté. Le changement climatique est une question importante que la communauté a pris en compte et développé sa propre stratégie locale dans la résilience.

Because of its essential role in coupling climate and tectonics, denudation is a key parameter when constraining the history of Earth’s surface. This is particularly true at the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition, and the potential impact of the onset of Quaternary glaciations remains strongly debated. In the present study, we measured in situ cosmogenic 10Be within continuous late Cenozoic sedimentary sections that had already been dated using magnetostratigraphy. The new data were obtained from four sedimentary basins in the northern and southern Tianshan range (Central Asia). We first thoroughly discuss how in situ cosmogenic 10Be concentrations can be corrected for radioactive decay and for the contribution of postdepositional cosmogenic accumulation to derive the paleo–denudation rates. Our analysis shows that, in the four sedimentary records, the potential bias remains low enough to consider the derived denudation rates reliable. The four records, although likely influenced by local particularities due to lithological heterogeneity and local tectonics, display similar trends of continuously increasing denudation between ca. 9 Ma and the present. These rates have remained relatively high but steady since 4 Ma, ∼1.5 m.y. before the onset of the Quaternary glacial cycles. Though the rejuvenation of the Tianshan range since 11 Ma may explain most of the progressive increase (×5) in denudation, our data suggest that the Quaternary glaciations had only a limited impact on denudation in the Tianshan. Our data, however, indicate an increase in the spatial and high-frequency variability (<1 m.y.) of the denudation rates between 3 and 1 Ma. This may correspond to a transient readjustment of the landscape in response to the onset of Quaternary glacial cycles.
