Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : Investigations carried out in both Corsica lagoons Diana and Urbino during the period from January to August 1985, permitted to define the main characteristics of microplankton cycle. Two phytoplanktonic blooms have been observed, first in winter, second less important in July-August. Any correlation cannot be observed between phytoplanktonic cycle or one its main components, and both environmental variables temperature and salinity. However dissolved oxygen ratio may be subject to large summer variations, drifting towards until ecological desequilibrious. ![]() | Biogenic silica in the Bay of Bengal during the southwest monsoon Auteur(s) : Gupta, Gvm Sarma, Vv Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : During RV Gaveshani cruise No. 235 (August-September, 1993), particulate matter was collected from euphotic and deeper waters in the Bay of Bengal and analysed for biogenic silica (BSi), lithogenic silica (LSi) and particulate organic carbon (POC). Mean depth profiles of BSi showed a minimum in the surface waters and a maximum in the middle depths of the euphotic zone. The deepening of BSi maxima from north to south coincides with the deepening of the thermocline and thickening of the surface layer. In coastal waters, the contribution of BSi to total particulate silica was high (> 80 %); in offshore waters it was 60-70 %. BSi/POC (0.086) and LSi/POC (0.023) ratios show that particulate matter consists mostly of biogenic material, while the BSi/LSi (1.61) ratio revealed the dominance of siliceous phytoplankton in the euphotic zone. High concentrations of BSi (0.49 mu mol l(-1)) and LSi (1.89 mu mol l(-1)) in deeper waters are due to a high sedimentation rate, the resuspension of bottom sediments and the flow of large amounts of riverine siliceous material. ![]() | Spatial and temporal coherence between Amazon River discharge, salinity, and light absorption by colored organic carbon in western tropical Atlantic surface waters Auteur(s) : Salisbury, J. Vandemark, D. Campbell, J. Hunt, C. Wisser, D. Reul, Nicolas Chapron, Bertrand Éditeur(s) : Amer Geophysical Union Résumé : The temporal evolution and spatial distribution of surface salinity and colored detrital matter (cdm) were evaluated within and adjacent to the Amazon River Plume. Study objectives were as follows: first, to document the spatial coherence between Amazon discharge, salinity, cdm, and the nature of the salinity-cdm relationship; second, to document the temporal and spatial variability of cdm along the trajectory of the low-salinity Amazon Plume, and third, to explore the departure of cdm from conservative mixing behavior along the plume trajectory into the open ocean. Time series (2003-2007) of surface salinity estimated using the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System and corresponding satellite cdm absorption (acdm) data documented a plume of freshened, colored water emanating from the Amazon. Salinity and acdm were generally coherent, but there were regions in which spatial patterns of salinity and acdm did not coincide. Salinity was oppositely phased with discharge, whereas acdm was in phase but lagged discharge and typically remained high after maximum discharge. Along the river plume trajectory, acdm was inversely correlated with salinity, yet there was considerable deviation from conservative mixing behavior during all seasons. Positive anomalies in a linear relationship between salinity and acdm corresponded to areas of enhanced satellite-retrieved net primary productivity, suggesting the importance of phytoplankton biomass or its subsequent remineralization as a source of cdm. Negative anomalies tended to predominate at the distal sections of the plume trajectories, an observation consistent with the process of photo-oxidation of cdm over observed time scales of days to weeks. A ship's ballast water study in sorne french ports has been carried out ,to seek for presence of harmfull or pathogenic organisms. Results let appear pathogenic bacteriae in half of the ships, and weIl known toxic phytoplancton species (from Spain ,north Africa) The technical problem of ballast water treatment is considered. ![]() | DEDUCTION : A research project for shrimp farming sustainability in New-Caledonia Auteur(s) : Beliaeff, Benoit Chim, Liet Della Patrona, Luc Goyard, Emmanuel Herlin, Jose Labreuche, Yannick Walling, Emilie Ansquer, Dominique Éditeur(s) : The 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress : Pacific Countries and their Ocean: Facing Local and Global Changes. March 2 - 6, 2009 Tahiti, French Polynesia Résumé : New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government of New Caledonia. This program has been designed in a multidisciplinary approach integrating the suspected multifactorial origin of shrimp mortalities. Environment quality in ponds (either sediment or water column) plays a major role in the shrimp ecophysiological status, influencing sensitivity to pathogens . DEDUCTION focuses on a better knowledge of phytoplankton composition and biogeochemical fluxes at the sediment-water interface in ponds. Impact of farm discharges is also investigated. In addition, a more fundamental work is conducted to understand the pathogenicity mechanisms of these two Vibrio species but also to prevent the occurrence of viral infections through a RNA interference approach. Markers of the ecophysiological status of broodstock, larvae, post-larvae and reared animals, such as enzymes testifying from an oxidative stress, are developed. Gain of performance (resistance to pathogens and growth) were obtained on hybrids of the New Caledonian and introduced Hawaiian strains. Finally the database Stylog is exploited in view of discriminating “good” from “bad” rearings on the basis of relevant indicators. ![]() | Interspecific comparison of Cd bloaccumulation in European Pectinidae (Chlamys varia and Pecten maximus) Auteur(s) : Metian, M Warnau, M Oberhansli, F Teyssie, J Bustamante, Paco Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The uptake and loss kinetics of Cd were determined in two species of scallops from the European coasts, the variegated scallop Chlamys varia and the king scallop Pecten maximus, following exposures via seawater, phytoplankton and sediment using highly sensitive radiotracer techniques (Cd-109). Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within R maximus tissues. Both species showed a high retention capacity for Cd (biological half-life, T-b1/2 > 4 months), suggesting efficient mechanisms of detoxification and storage in both species. The digestive gland was found to be the main storage organ of Cd in the two scallops regardless of the exposure pathway. However, Cd was stored differently within this organ according to the species considered: 40% of the total Cd was found in the soluble cellular fraction in C. varia whereas this soluble fraction reached 80% for P. maximus. This suggests that the two species displayed different Cd detoxification/storage mechanisms. Finally, the present study has determined the relative contribution of the different exposure pathways to global Cd bioaccumulation for the two scallop species. Results clearly show that for both species, food constitutes the major accumulation pathway, contributing for >99% and 84% of the global Cd bioaccumulation in C. varia and R maximus, respectively. This work confirms the previous assumption, derived from a bibliographic overview, that dietary pathway plays a prevalent role in metal bioaccumulation in Pectinidae. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. ![]() | Détection satellitaire et modélisation opérationnelle de la production végétale non-fixée dans la bande côtière bretonne ; Remote sensing and operationnal modelling of non-fixed algal production on the French Brittany coastal shelf Auteur(s) : Penard, Cédric Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The negative impact of the man on the environment unquestionably increases. The coastal environment as a whole is the maritime environment which is the most exposed to man-made eutrophication. For instance, nitrate loads to coastal waters off Brittany (France) have increased 10 times (from 3 to s 30mg L-1NO3) during the four last decades. Eutrophication of this coastal zone is now a recurrent problem, more and more worrying. This eutrophication exhibits two main forms : " green tides ", which are caused by local proliferations and stranding of green macro-algae (particularly the Ulva species) in nitrogen-enriched areas ; phytoplanktonic blooms, which are responsible for coloured water events, toxic species can be present (Pseudo-Nitzschia, Alexandrium, Dinophysis), and induce banning of shellfish consumption. The objectives of this study are to assess the respective role of various rivers (especially the Loire and the Vilaine) in the eutrophication of the Brittany shelf ecosystem and test the impact of nitrogen enrichment in the triggering of Pseudo-Nitzchia toxicity. For these purposes, a coupled hydrodynamical/ biogeochemical 3D model has been developed and validated against past measured time-series and satellite images. After a brief analysis of primary production over the Brittany shelf under different conditions, we show a description of the real time adaptation of this model. Daily results are currently presented in real time on www.previmer.org web site. The inability of the model to correctly simulate near shore phytoplankton is worsened in this model by the fact that the turbidity field used is a climatological one, made by satellite images averaged on a decadal basis. First, near shore pixels of satellite images are scarcely reliable, secondly a climatological mean cannot represent the sudden bursts or drops of the real turbidity, highly dependent on the actual sea-state : this can explain also why the model at this moment fails to reproduce a sudden bloom occurring in a short period of sunny and calm weather. The simulated Pseudo-Nitzschia biomass and induced risk of toxicity in the water column cannot really be validated offshore, because monitoring measurements are available only near the coast, and deal only with toxicity in benthic filter feeders. To get temporarily rid of that problem, an interesting improvement would be to add to the operational model the bio-accumulation of toxin in the shellfishes : simulated concentrations in shellfish fresh would become directly comparable with usual measurements of the monitoring networks. Our model points out the important impact of Loire river loads on the primary production on the western and southern Brittany. This result is crucial for administrations in charge of reducing the terrestrial loadings responsible for eutrophication, because it can delay reduction programs on small tributaries until the main input from the Loire has been significantly reduced. A question arises, about the reliability of the haline stratification in the model, because the horizontal extent of the Loire plume will be enhanced by a stronger stratification. ![]() | Towards the Determination of Mytilus edulis Food Preferences Using the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) Theory Auteur(s) : Picoche, Coralie Le Gendre, Romain Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan Francoise, Sylvaine Maheux, Frank Simon, Benjamin Gangnery, Aline Éditeur(s) : Public Library Science Résumé : The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a commercially important species, with production based on both fisheries and aquaculture. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models have been extensively applied to study its energetics but such applications require a deep understanding of its nutrition, from filtration to assimilation. Being filter feeders, mussels show multiple responses to temporal fluctuations in their food and environment, raising questions that can be investigated by modeling. To provide a better insight into mussel–environment interactions, an experiment was conducted in one of the main French growing zones (Utah Beach, Normandy). Mussel growth was monitored monthly for 18 months, with a large number of environmental descriptors measured in parallel. Food proxies such as chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon and phytoplankton were also sampled, in addition to non-nutritious particles. High-frequency physical data recording (e.g., water temperature, immersion duration) completed the habitat description. Measures revealed an increase in dry flesh mass during the first year, followed by a high mass loss, which could not be completely explained by the DEB model using raw external signals. We propose two methods that reconstruct food from shell length and dry flesh mass variations. The former depends on the inversion of the growth equation while the latter is based on iterative simulations. Assemblages of food proxies are then related to reconstructed food input, with a special focus on plankton species. A characteristic contribution is attributed to these sources to estimate nutritional values for mussels. M. edulis shows no preference between most plankton life history traits. Selection is based on the size of the ingested particles, which is modified by the volume and social behavior of plankton species. This finding reveals the importance of diet diversity and both passive and active selections, and confirms the need to adjust DEB models to different populations and sites. ![]() | Synthèse hydrobiologique du site électronucléaire de Flamanville Auteur(s) : Dreves, Luc Lampert, Luis Abernot, Chantal Martin, Jocelyne Arzel, Pierre Dumas, Franck Latrouite, Daniel Schlaich, Ivan Résumé : This synthesis report assesses the current state of the marine hydrobiological knowledge acquired in the surroundings of the Flamanville electronuclear site (north-west of Cotentin), in the framework of the various project and monitoring programs in the pelagic, benthic and halieutic domains carried out on this site since 1976. Each domain is divided, as much as necessary, into different study areas such as hydrobiology, phytoplankton, microbiology, crustacean larvae or macrophyte algae. For each area, a series of parameters, considered as representative of the evolution of this area, is studied. In this way, for the hydrological area, the sea water temperature and salinity, the mineral nutriment concentrations, the holagen compounds and the boron are monitored. The evolution of each of these parameters enabled us to draw the following conclusions. The vegetal and animal species' physiology is conditioned by climate changes. The study of the pluviometry and air temperature parameters shows that the 1986/2005 period is slightly less humid and warmer than the 1949/2005 period. This reflects also on the sea water temperature whose average values increase on a regular basis. ![]() | Spatial and temporal extension of eutrophication associated with shrimp farm wastewater discharges in the New Caledonia lagoon Auteur(s) : Thomas, Yoann Courties, Claude El Helwe, Yasmin Herbland, Alain Lemonnier, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Shrimp farming in New Caledonia typically uses a flow-through system with water exchange rates as a tool to maintain optimum hydrological and biological parameters for the crop. Moreover, the effluent shows hydrobiological characteristics (minerals, phytoplankton biomass and organic matter) significantly higher than that of the receiving environment. Separate surveys were carried out in a bay (CH Bay) with a medium-size intensive farm (30 ha) (PO) and in a mangrove-lined creek (TE Creek) near a larger semi-intensive farm (133 ha) (SO). Net loads of nitrogen exported from the semi-intensive farm and the intensive farm amounted to 0.68 and 1.36 kg ha(-1) day(-1), respectively. At CH Bay, discharge effects were spatially limited and clearly restricted to periods of effluent release. The high residence time at site TE favoured the installation of a feedback system in which organic matter was not exported. Mineralization of organic matter led to the release of nutrients, which in turn, caused in an increased eutrophication of this ecosystem. The study of the pico- and nanophytoplankton assemblages showed (i) a shift in composition from picophytoplankton to nanophytoplankton from offshore towards the coast and (ii) a shift within the picophytoplankton with the disappearance of Prochlorococcus and the increase of picoeucaryotes towards the shoreline. These community changes may partially be related to a nitrogen enrichment of the environment by shrimp farm discharges. Thus, in view of the recent addition of the New Caledonian lagoon to the UNESCO World Heritage list, the data presented here could be a first approach to quantify farm discharges and evaluate their impact on the lagoon. ![]() | Pearl Oysters Pinctada margaritifera grazing on natural plankton in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia) Auteur(s) : Fournier, Jonathan Dupuy, Celie Bouvy, Marc Couraudon-reale, Marine Charpy, Loic Pouvreau, Stephane Le Moullac, Gilles Le Pennec, Marie-annick Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : In atoll lagoons of French Polynesia, growth and reproduction of pearl oysters are mainly driven by plankton concentration. However, the actual diet of black-lip pearl oysters P. margaritifera in these lagoons is poorly known. To fill this gap, we used the flow through chamber method to measure clearance rates of P. margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia). We found : (i) that pearl oysters cleared plankton at a rate that was positively related to plankton biovolume, (ii) that nanoflagellates were the main source of carbon for the pearl oysters, (iii) that the quantity and origin of carbon filtrated by pearl oysters was highly dependent on the concentration and composition of plankton. These results provide essential elements for the comprehension of growth and reproduction variability of pearl oysters in atoll lagoons of French Polynesia. ![]() | Nutrient dynamics, primary production and fisheries yields of lagoons Auteur(s) : Nixon, S W Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : Differences appear to have a marked influence on the species composition of lagoon ecosystems around the world, but there are some remarkable similarities in nutrient dynamics, the standing crop of phytoplankton, annual primary production, and fisheries yields of many lagoons. For example, in many of the systems reviewed, the annual phosphate cycle was similar in timing and magnitude, primary production amounted to some 200-400 g C m super(-1) yr super(-1). There appears to be an empirical correlation between primary production and fisheries yields in a great variety of marine systems. The yield of lagoon fisheries per unit area is commonly as high or higher than that from the most productive coastal and offshore fisheries.
