La dynamique des pêches côtières du pays bigouden Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Résumé : In the beginning, the coastal fleet of the Bigouden region fished by trawling and was completely focused on exploiting lobster and hake. It is a traditional business that expanded between the last war and the 70s, reaching its peak between 1975 and 1980.
The best image to give an idea of this fleet is that of a "bucket waterwheel" endlessly discharging its catch in the four ports of the Guilvinec district. Where there is a seafaring business in Guilvinec, Loctudy and Saint-Guénolé, there is a complementarity that is expressed in two ways:
- coastal fishing constitutes a very noticeable and regular supplement to production, since sales happen daily and only bad winter weather causes a relative decrease in the supplement. - coastal fishing gives a flattering image of the port based on the display of high-quality leading market products: daily live lobster, hake and angler.
In this study, we have above all tried to evaluate the situation of the Bigouden coastal system as an entity, while including in the same analysis the species, fleets and the exploitation of the resource. For the main species, a balance sheet is proposed. It covers the lobster, hake and angler separately. Lobster, because of its small amount of movement, can be considered as being an isolated stock, while fish belong to much more wide-ranging groups.
The lobster has gained from various increases in meshing that have been imposed since 1971, even if these have not always been strictly applied. One of the results of this management by means of meshing is a "depreciation" of the variations of daily yields around an average value of 100kg.
For the hake, the dominant trait is an increase in yields in the last few years in accordance with an improvement of the situation in the Gulf of Gascony due to a generalised decrease of effort and a modification of the exploitation profile since the appearance of boulters and straight nets. Whereas the situation for lobster fisheries, as regards the hake's marketable size, did not improve, since the demand for small hake still exists, we have nonetheless been witnessing for about ten years a slow diversification of the fleets' business activities, which is much more in line with sequential hake fisheries' logical outline of exploitation. When lobster yields decrease, one part of the fleet focuses on the fish at the edges of the lobster fisheries.
For the angler, we see rather similar phenomena and a significant increase in unloading of the two species by lobster fishermen due also to a widening of their fishing areas. On the lobster mudflats themselves, there is no notable change in exploitation in the historical records. All studies of coastal fishing always come up against the problem of acquiring statistical data and the Bigouden region is no exception to the rule.
To improve this situation, in 1987 and 1988 two items were chosen:
- a better awareness of the activity and of the areas frequented, by survey during unloading in Guilvinec and in Loctudy.
- a detailed description of the haul by species, by sampling, in Loctudy, on two-thirds of coastal sales, between December 1987 and November 1988.
For this reason, analysis of fleets by type is still cursory and covers only one year. The appearance of new trends towards fish can only be described qualitatively, since there is no historical record. The classification of boats was done by analysing data furnished by the auctions. This first assessment is not necessarily reliable, above all because of the auctions' inaccurate description of the hauls, a deficiency that we have tried to overcome by surveying in Loctudy.
In conclusion, we are witnessing in the Bigouden region, as in other entities, a rebalancing between traditional business activities and modern trends. Lobster fishing, almost exclusive before the 1980s, is tending to decrease for two main reasons:
- a generalised decrease in activity in the lobster fisheries due to non-renewal of coastal fish fleets,
- The transfer of part of the lobster fishermen's activities to fish, since the lobster and its accompanying catch no longer seemed able to insure the economic viability of new ships.
Other maritime districts resolved their lobster problem in a different way. The Lorient fishermen improved their yields by using more capable trawlers, the fishermen of Sable by exploiting the hake fish run to the fullest and limiting their lobster fishing to the best season. The Bigouden region is slowly turning to the second solution, as it renews its fleet.
Métiers, effort and catches of a Mediterranean small-scale coastal fishery: The case of the Côte Bleue Marine Park Auteur(s) : Leleu, Kevin Pelletier, Dominique Charbonnel, Eric Letourneur, Yves Alban, Frederique Bachet, Frederic Boudouresque, Charles F. Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The overexploitation of fishery resources has led to a major fisheries crisis. In this context, artisanal fisheries, and in particular small-scale coastal fisheries, appear as relevant alternatives for a sustainable use of coastal resources. Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are more and more used as management tools for these fisheries, as protection effects and targeted access regulations may benefit to commercial fishers. Managers and scientists need then quantitative information not only to adapt their management to the fishing activity present on their territory, but also to estimate the effects of MPA management on it. This study provides catch and effort estimates that are essential for appraising and managing the artisanal fishery in the Côte Bleue Marine Park (CBMP), a French Mediterranean MPA including two No-Take Zones of different age and size. A field protocol was defined and implemented between July 2009 and June 2010 within the CBMP. Seven métiers were identified and characterized by target species, gear type, fishing grounds and fishing periods. During the one-year studied period, 3512 fishing trips and 4645 fishing operations were performed by 30 active boats in the Côte Bleue fishing territory, amounting to 9500 km of immersed nets. In total, approximately 130 tons of catch were landed in the six CBMP harbors, out of which 58% depend on the three main species caught on the Côte Bleue: hake (Merluccius merluccius), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and common sole (Solea solea). The presented methodology could be part of a long term monitoring requiring close collaboration with local fishers. It enables adaptive management with respect to changes in fishing pressure (from inside and outside the MPA) that may impact the environment and its resources. The significant contribution of FADs to Solomon Taiyo Limited's fishing operations Auteur(s) : Sibisopere, M Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : From 1972, when Solomon Taiyo Limited (stl) started a pole-and-line fishing operation, to 1980, stl vessels had been catching tuna almost exclusively from surface free-swimming schools. In 1981, a fad programme group purse-seining fishing operation, using the Filipino "payao" model, was put in place. Results were excellent and STL vessels quickly adapted their fishing methods to make the best use of fads. STL slightly modified the original payao design to better suit its own needs and nowadays, about 90% of the group purse seine catch, i.e. 5,800 t annually, and around 60-70% of the pole-and-line catch, i.e. about 15,000 t annually, come from fad fishing. fads bring benefits not only to stl but also to the rural communities of the region. For stl, it allows savings on the operational costs, especially those of pole-and-line fishing operations, reduction of searching time and a better regularity of fish landings. For the rural communities, it gives better returns to bait-ground owners through royalties paid by stl for their baitfishing boats and it allows local fishing communities (known as canoe-fishermen) to increase their catches using fishing methods (artisanal) such as trolling and midwater handlines set around fads. This provides fish for family consumption and a source of income from fish sold. Overall, the importance of fads to stl's fishing operation, and therefore to the local economy as a whole, is high, although no precise value can be attached to it. The development of large pelagic fishing in the French Antilles is an integral part of a difficult economic situation of the fishing sector in Martinique where this development can seem like a solution to increasingly acute problems. Indeed, for the regulatory authorities as well as for many participants in the sector, it is imperative to find solutions to the lack of profitability of a part of the fishing ships and to confront the regular increase of the share of imports in supplying Martinique with seafood. This question about the possibilities of developing large pelagic fishing is not new since it is already mentioned in the Notice from the Economic and Social Committee of the Martinique Region in 1982. We will not show in this document a detailed analysis of small-scale fishing in Martinique. Since the latter has been abundantly studied by the team of the Caribbean Oceanological and Halieutic Research Centre (PROHC) between 1985 and 1987, we will take up these principal conclusions (with which we are in full agreement) and bring them up to date based on data collected during our mission from 11 to 24 April 1988. The first section devoted to the supply structure (local fishing and imports) will attempt to define under what conditions large pelagic fishing can be developed. The second section will address marketing and demand. Indeed, at the same time as the problems of developing large pelagic fishing, we are faced with the question of the organisation of seafood markets. This organisation is a fundamental issue for the small-scale fishing sector in the French Antilles since its long-term future depends upon it by setting different prices and amounts exchanged according to the structure it is given. We will come to a conclusion on the economic conditions of developing a large pelagic fishery and organising a market, this based on research and study work already done. We will indicate which investigations must be conducted to complete the set of factors for decision support in this area. To perform this assessment, we reconstructed from the long series 1970-1986 (sometimes with significant inadequacies): these are presented as an appendix. To address this knowledge gap, a holistic study of the ciguatera issue was conducted on Moorea. First, ciguatera risk was analysed in terms of incidence rate, fish species most commonly involved and risk stratification in Moorea lagoon based on 2007–2013 epidemiological data. A mean incidence rate of 8 cases per 10,000 inhabitants for the study period and an average under-reporting rate of 54% were found. Taking into account hospitalization and medication fees, and loss of productive days, the health-related costs due to CFP were estimated to be USD $1613 and $749 for each reported and unreported case, respectively, with an overall cost of USD $241,847 for the study period. Comparison of the present status of CFP on Moorea with a risk map established in the late 1970’s showed that the spatial distribution of the risk has stayed relatively stable in time, with the north shore of the island remaining the most prone to ciguatera. Evaluation of the current knowledge on CFP among different populations groups, i.e. fishermen, residents and visitors, was also conducted through direct and indirect interviews. About half of the fishermen interviewed were actually able to identify risky fishing areas. While, overall, the CFP risk perception in the fishing community of Moorea seemed accurate, although not scientifically complete, it was sufficient for the safe practice of their fishing activities. This may be due in part to adaptive responses adopted by 36% of the fishermen interviewed, such as the avoidance of either high-risk fishing sites or toxic species. At the residents and visitors’ level, the study points out a striking lack of awareness of the CFP issue among visitors, as compared to local residents. Indeed, less than 25% of Moorea visitors vs. an average of 98% in residents were aware of CFP or of its presence on the island. Interestingly, evaluation of the fish consumption preferences showed that 70% of visitors do not consume lagoon fish during their stay, not for fear of CFP, but mainly due to the lack of availability of these species in recreational facilities or because they have nutritional preference for pelagic fish. This lack of awareness, along with the report by several CFP patients of the consumption of fish species yet banned for sale, stress the need for improved communication efforts on this critical issue among both residents and visitors on Moorea. The implementation of a public outreach strategy is proposed, based on both existing information networks and low-cost communication actions through information displays at various strategic locations, e.g. Tahiti-Faa’a international airport, the ferry boat station, recreational facilities, as well as the major trading points on Moorea Island. Fishing strategies, economic performance and management of moored fishing aggregating devices in Guadeloupe Auteur(s) : Guyader, Olivier Bellanger, Manuel Reynal, Lionel Demaneche, Sebastien Berthou, Patrick Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : Moored FADs (MFADs) have been a key area for development in Guadeloupe (Lesser Antilles) since the late 1980's. The main objectives underpinning the development of MFADs were to (i) reduce fishing pressure on coastal fishing resources; (ii) boost fishermen's incomes; and (iii) increase local consumption of locally generated fishery products as a proportion of overall consumption. This paper gives an overview of the current structure of Guadeloupe's fishing fleet and fisheries, with a specific focus on MFAD fleets in a relatively unstructured environment with regard to regulation, and so how these fleets operate in a context of unrestricted development of private MFADs. In addressing the following key issues, this paper aims to: assess the economic performance of fleets operating on MFADs, understand why the MFAD fishing activity has not developed more than it has, and suggest how better MFAD management could improve the situation. Socio-economic information on a trip and fleet level basis were collected and stored on a fisheries information system to analyse the relative attractiveness of MFAD fishing and assess the overall economic performance of MFAD fleets as compared to other non-MFAD fleets. Non-monetary variables were also tested to explain the degree of dependence on MFADs. In 2008, economic returns from FADs were relatively low, both in terms of wages for the crews and in terms of profit for vessel owners. Earnings were higher than coastal fishing activities, but seem to have been very sensitive to the indicators used in our analysis. MFADs are expected to become much more attractive as a result of MFAD regulation, especially through the establishment of collective MFADs. Spillover from marine protected areas to adjacent fisheries has an ecological and a fishery component Auteur(s) : Di Lorenzo, Manfredi Claudet, Joachim Guidetti, Paolo Auteurs secondaires : Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero ; Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche [Roma] (CNR) Laboratoire d'Excellence CORAIL (LabEX CORAIL) ; Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) - École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) - Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) - Université de la Réunion (UR) - Université de la Polynésie Française (UPF) - Université de Nouvelle Calédonie - Institut d'écologie et environnement Centre de recherches insulaires et observatoire de l'environnement (CRIOBE) ; Université de Perpignan Via Domitia (UPVD) - École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) CONISMA ULR (CONISMA) ; Università degli studi di Milano [Milano] Ecosystèmes Côtiers Marins et Réponses aux Stress (ECOMERS) ; Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS) ; Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Elsevier Résumé : International audience Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), if well designed and managed, can produce conservation benefits to fish assemblages within no-take zones and fishery benefits in neighboring areas through ‘spillover’. However, although plenty of studies have provided evidence of the benefits produced within MPA boundaries, overall benefits to local fisheries, especially via spillover, seem to be still unclear. Because of the lost fishing grounds following an MPA establishment, local fishermen usually oppose MPAs. There is, therefore, the urgent need for a better understanding of the mechanism(s) through which MPAs can export fishable fish biomass towards adjacent fished areas, a process that could counterbalance the loss of fishing grounds. Here we review the literature on spillover for refining the terminology, detailing the underlying mechanisms and identifying both the existing and needed methodological approaches to measure spillover. Operationally, two types of spillover should be considered: ecological spillover (i.e. the net export of juvenile, subadult and adult biomass from MPAs outwards driven by density-dependent processes) and the fishery spillover (i.e. the proportion of this biomass that can be fished, taking into account regulations and accessibility). Underwater visual census and tagging/tracking may allow getting evidence of ecological spillover, while experimental catch data are essential to assess and monitor fishery spillover, which is the main component of MPAs that can provide direct benefit to local fisheries. The management of Norway Lobster and Hake fisheries can be considered as the most important issue in the Gascogne gulf. Calculation methods used to evaluate prediction variations under various efforts and mesh constraints all pinpoint to the crucial role narrow mesh fishing plays in Hakes' Northern stock status. The involvement of Gascogne gulf Norway Lobster fisheries regarding Hakes over exploitation seems over dimensioned when comparing the size of both of these stocks. Hake stocks spread from Northern Great Britain to Northern Spain, while Norway Lobster stocks are located in the Gascogne gulf's mud flats. The biological solution is well known and consists in globally increasing mesh nets to 80mm which would bring up Hakes yield to its most. It would be unreal to pretend all parties involved in Hake stocks will come to use them. For now, it is mostly an economical issue since many vessels continue on with an exploitation scheme dating from the 60's and fish on coastal mud flats which are the most exploited zones and where their catch is detrimental to juvenile class Hakes and Norway Lobsters. Considering our limited time, this study will cover bio- economical modelisation preparation. You will therefore find a description of fisheries and an exploitation assessment based on 1986's available data.
2 - Accomplished work
2. 1 Fishery description
Presenting the problems and preparing ulterior analyses was first and foremost. Norway Lobster vessels supposedly, according to evaluation models used, test immature Hakes in such a manner that all stock exploitation is jeopardized. Norway Lobster distribution is closely linked to the nature of the ocean floor since it can only build its habitat on fine sediment. Hakes' habitat is not as restrictive and is linked to food supply, especially euphausiid shrimps, so they can be found on sandy and sandy-sedimental floors. Norway Lobsters are sought by a fleet of 400 to 450 ships which characteristics widely vary according to their home port. On the northern part, fisheries are close to exploitation ports where Norway Lobsters and miscellaneous catch yield is sufficient to support an older fleet. On the southern part, the structure is diversified and flexibility usually rules, more modern vessels can easily switch their target on a seasonal or daily basis. Globally, Hakes' northern stocks are slightly on the rise. This rise is probably due to global mesh size increase, even if slight and a decrease on fishing effort where immature species are caught. Norway Lobster stocks unloading is stable or slightly lower and yields, as far as northern fishery are concerned, vary and oscillate between ±15 to ±20 % at about an average of 100 kg/day. Biological parameters used in the evaluations for each species are those used in CIEM and CEE work cells. Among those parameters, those describing growth are the greatest. For Hakes, an intermediary growth equation between males and females has been used. For Norway Lobsters, both sexes are treated separately. Simulations were carried out according to 3 types of data: Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort variations. Norway Lobster vessels mesh increase. Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort decrease or mesh increasing go along in the same direction for Hake and Norway Lobster stock production (chart A and B). Lastly, a brief study on results evaluation significance was done to modify: - the size of Hake rejects by Norway Lobster vessels. The range of sizes stays the same but the amount in each class varies according to the same percentage. - Norway Lobsters growth parameters, both values used (L» = 76 mm and k = 0.11 for males, L°° = 56 mm and k = 0.14 for females) representing the "high" hypothesis. In the first case, a 20% error rate for rejects evaluation with 60 mm mesh would only bring a 3% modification rate on global stock production. Those first results are contradicting usual evaluation conclusions and it will be necessary to recalculate by modifying the size class step. In the second case, to decrease L» and increase growth speed, in time production variations remain within usual inter annual fluctuations. In all figure cases, calculations confirming greater yield for in time production through hypothetical mesh size increase to 60 mm, are definitely well founded.
Particularly, Fsh is as potent as Lh to stimulate steroidogenesis and the Fsh receptor is expressed in Leydig cells. In seasonal breeders, Fsh is likely the major gonadotropin involved in spermatogenesis onset and Lh is required to support spermatogenesis progression and gamete release. However, the genes that relay the action of Fsh and Lh have been poorly investigated in fish. The present study was aimed at identifying gonadotropin-dependent genes expressed in the testis during fish puberty. We cultured pubertal trout testicular explants for 96 h, with or without gonadotropin, and analyzed transcriptome variations using microarrays. Fsh and Lh had similar effects on a large group of genes while other genes were preferentially regulated by one or the other gonadotropin. We showed that most of the responsive genes were expressed in somatic cells and exhibited relevant patterns during the seasonal reproductive cycle. Some genes preferentially modulated by Lh could be involved in testicular cell fate (pvrl1 and bty) or sperm maturation (ehmt2 and racgap1) and will deserve further examination. Besides Fsh's effects on the steroidogenic pathway, our study demonstrates that Fsh coordinates relevant stimulatory and inhibitory paracrine factors known to regulate early germ cell proliferation and differentiation. Some of these genes belong to major regulatory pathways including the Igf pathway (igf1b/igf3 and igfbp6), the Tgfb pathway (amh, inha, inhba, and fstl3), the Wnt pathway (wisp1), and pleiotrophin (mdka). Environmental and subtidal fish assemblage relationships in two different Brazilian coastal estuaries Auteur(s) : Vendel Ana, Lucia Bouchereau, Jean-Luc De Tarso Chaves, Paulo Auteurs secondaires : Centro de Ciencias Biologicas et Sociais Aplicadas ; Universidade Estadual da Paraiba Systématique, adaptation, évolution (SAE) ; Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Departamento de Zoologia ; Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Tecpar Résumé : International audience The general structure and organization of the shallow water (<1.5 m) fish assemblages were studied in two southern Brazilian ecosystems, a bay and a lagoon, under different marine or continental influences. The abiotic factors were measured to define the hydrology of the sites and the biotic descriptors were evaluated to characterize the assemblage structures. Transparency, salinity and organic matter were the abiotic factors which best distinguished the sites. A total richness of 69 species was observed. Ecological guilds, density, diversity and evenness indices values were different in each site. Hydrodynamism and geomorphology determined the structure and the organization of the fish assemblages in these shallow waters. It was observed that variations in the hydrological attributes generated by the marine or continental water movements are able to alter the conditions in the lagoon more quickly and at more regular frequencies than those in the bay. La pecherie de langouste rouge en Corse Auteur(s) : Marin, Jean Résumé : The european red spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas, is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. The fishery is described fleet, fishing areas, fishing strategy and fishing gear ; fishing effort, yield, c.p.u.e, and complementary.catches ; resource condition. Its specific problem, the economic overfishing, is analysed. Finally, it has been tried to assess the fishing regulation impact (minimum market size, fishing seasonal close, fishing sanctuaries). Juvenile triploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were fed a low-phosphorus (P) diet for 27 weeks (60 to 630 g body mass). At study termination, 24.9% of the fish fed the low-P diet displayed homogeneous biconcave vertebrae (deformed vertebrae phenotype), while 5.5% displayed normal vertebral phenotypes for the entire experiment. The aim of our study was to characterize the deformed phenotype and identify the putative genes involved in the appearance of P deficiency-induced deformities. Both P status and biomechanical measurements showed that deformed vertebrae were significantly less mineralized (55.0 ± 0.4 and 59.4 ± 0.5,% ash DM, for deformed and normal vertebrae, respectively) resulting in a lower stiffness (80.3 ± 9.0 and 140.2 ± 6.3 N/mm, for deformed and normal phenotypes, respectively). The bone profiles based on μCT observations showed no difference in the osteoclastic resorption while no difference in matrix production was observed between deformed (total bone area 5442.0 ± 110.1 μm2) and normal vertebrae (total bone area 5931.2 ± 249.8 μm2) in this study. Consequently, the lower P content rather results from a reduced degree of mineralization in the deformed phenotype. Finally, we quantified differential gene expression between deformed vertebrae (pronounced biconcave) and normal phenotype by employing deep RNA-sequencing and mapping against a reference bone transcriptome for rainbow trout. In total, 1289 genes were differentially expressed. Among them, in deformed fish we observed that BGLAP, MGP and NOG, an inhibitor of BMP signalling pathway, were up-regulated while COL11a1 was down-regulated. These genes are central actors involved in the reduced degree of mineralization triggering vertebral deformities. These results will further the understanding of P deficiency-induced deformities; hence providing new tools for improved P management in production settings Journal of Next Generation Sequencing & Applications hal-01545768 https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01545768 DOI : 10.4172/2469-9853.1000112 | Partager |
Cantonment fishing is a French legal and administrative tool used to manage fisheries resources and the regulation of fishing on marine site defined. This tool was developed in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) in 1999, at the request of fishermen facing depletion of fish stocks in the coastal strip. The competent authorities on the marine environment have installed this device on eight areas spread around the island (the Atlantic coast to the Caribbean coast). Cantonment fishing is little scientifically documented to date, apart from fishery surveys conducted by scientists-biologists. It is therefore appropriate to retrace the steps of the development of this tool and analyze the first results and challenges. A cost-benefit analysis of improving trawl selectivity in the case of discards: The Nephrops norvegicus fishery in the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Macher, Claire Guyader, Olivier Talidec, Catherine Bertignac, Michel Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The Nephrops trawl fishery is one of the most important fisheries in the Bay of Biscay. The fishery management essentially relies on conservation measures, a total at I owed catch (TAC) for Nephrops together with a mini mum landing size (MLS) and minimum trawl mesh size (70 mm stretched mesh). These measures have failed to prevent high discard levels of many species that characterize the fishery. Nephrops trawlers thus discard about half of their Nephrops catches in numbers (a third in weight) of which only 30% survive. Nephrops discards mainly occur in younger Nephrops age groups below the MLS. This is a waste for the already overexploited Nephrops stock as well as for the fleet. Based on a bio-economic simulation model, the paper analyses the consequences of several scenarios of improving Nephrops selectivity. The potential impacts of these scenarios on Nephrops biomass, landings, discards and economic indicators (e.g. rent) are examined and a cost-benefit analysis of each scenario is carried out. We show that a better exploitation pattern would benefit fisheries that have high level of discards. Reducing non-commercial Nephrops discards leads to positive net present values of rent with better value realized from the production potential and limited short-term losses for the fishing units. By taking account of the economic dynamics of increasing effort however, we show that selectivity measures are insufficient. Regulating access to the fishery is also required to ensure the sustainability of the fishery and a better exploitation of the production potential. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Le stock de Lambi (Strombus gigas, L.) en Martinique : analyse de la situation 1986-1987, modélisation de l'exploitation, options d'aménagement Auteur(s) : Rathier, I Rathier, I Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The stock of Lambi, Strombus gigas (gastropod: strombidae), coastal benthic resource, has been exploited artisanally since the prehistoric period in Martinique. Nowadays, three lines of work exploit the species: free diving, nets (since the middle of the century) and scuba diving since 1985. This report presents the activity of each line of work, surveyed directly from 1986 to 1987: fishing zones and resource allocation, production, effort and performance, detail of catches (by length). The socio economic characteristics of the lambi fishermen are studied. The significant production of leisure fishing is also estimated. The decrease in the production and performance, as well as the lowering of the size of the first catch for about thirty years show that the stock is overexploited. The biological phenomenon of the stock: growth of the shell (length and shell lip), growth in weight, acquiring of sexual maturity, natural mortality are studied. The factors of mortality through fishing are estimated by class of length for the current exploitation regime by pseudo-cohort analysis. If the results confirm that the stock is overexploited, the level of overexploitation of the stock cannot be specified because of the presence of a number of lipped adults not yet too exploited in water deeper than 20 metres. The analysis of the dynamic process of the exploited population indicates two ways to the production of the stock: the forcing of the recruitment and the regulation of the exploitation regime. The lack of economic profitability of the production of juveniles over 30 mm and the difficulties raised by their collection in their natural habitat lead to the rationalization of the exploitation. The production and performance (by recruits) simulations performed for different exploitation regimens indicate that the only two conceivable options are the introduction of a minimum catch size, i.e. lambi with forming lip, and the regulation of the fishing effort. The socio-economic implications of the introduction of the determined management measures show that their applicability level is very low, because of the Martinique fishermen polyactivity, their low socio-economic level and mostly because of the free access to the resource. As a consequence, it is suggested to create new professional structures with a wide jurisdiction, in order to locally manage the marine areas, their use and their resources. Is total serum protein a good indicator for welfare in reared sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)? Auteur(s) : Coeurdacier, Jean-luc Dutto, Gilbert Gasset, Eric Blancheton, Jean-paul Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : Reared sea bass were submitted to six stressful situations: hyperoxia with or without hypercapnia, increased stocking density in an open flow or recirculating system, transfer to another tank and nodavirus injection. The potentially negative impact of these factors on the lives of sea bass was investigated by measuring 9 water parameters and 19 fish parameters including total serum protein (TSP). TSP has already been used to evaluate stress. The present study investigates data of previous and new experiments, concentrating on the potential use of TSP as a routine indicator to assess welfare in sea bass reared on fish farms. In the current experiment, oxygen and carbon dioxide were seen to affect levels of TSP, but alterations were too erratic to enable proper comparison, probably because they are normal components of the fish environment and become toxic only by dose increase. TSP decreased when stocking density increased. After transfer to another tank, TSP decreased to 14% for three weeks and then increased during the fourth week through compensative overproduction, before returning to normal levels after 2 months. The results confirmed that transfer is an important stress factor for fish, with cumulative effects for successive transfers. TSP alteration of nodavirus-injected fish depends on the type of symptoms, which can be divided into 3 groups: (i) dying fish, in which TSP increased sharply due to over-production of protein involved in non-specific defences and inflammation, then decreased dramatically before death; (ii) whirling fish, a group that included both fish that later died, in which TSP decreased, and fish that subsequently survived, in which TSP increased due to development of specific immunity; and (iii) asymptomatic fish, in which TPS was similar to control levels and which were probably insensitive to nodavirus and/or had developed defences. In this paper, different mechanisms of TSP alteration are proposed and the interest of TSP as a field parameter is discussed. TSP is a non-destructive parameter that is robust, easy to measure everywhere and cheap, representing a suitable way of monitoring the overall welfare of fish by its regular increase. It can be used only as a "warning" of poor rearing conditions, however, and further investigations would be needed to identify the specific stress or health disorder. Sediment pollution impacts sensory ability and performance of settling coral-reef fish Auteur(s) : O’Connor, J. Jack Lecchini, David Beck, Hayden J. Cadiou, Gwenael Lecellier, Gael Booth, David J. While the effect of increased sedimentation on the settlement of coral species is well studied, little is known about the impact on larval fish. Here, the effect of a laterite “red soil” sediment pollutant on settlement behaviour and post-settlement performance of reef fish was tested. In aquarium tests that isolated sensory cues, we found significant olfaction-based avoidance behaviour and disruption of visual cue use in settlement-stage larval fish at 50 mg L−1, a concentration regularly exceeded in situ during rain events. In situ light trap catches showed lower abundance and species richness in the presence of red soil, but were not significantly different due to high variance in the data. Prolonged exposure to red soil produced altered olfactory cue responses, whereby fish in red soil made a likely maladaptive choice for dead coral compared to controls where fish chose live coral. Other significant effects of prolonged exposure included decreased feeding rates and body condition. These effects on fish larvae reared over 5 days occurred in the presence of a minor drop in pH and may be due to the chemical influence of the sediment. Our results show that sediment pollution of coral reefs may have more complex effects on the ability of larval fish to successfully locate suitable habitat than previously thought, as well as impacting on their post-settlement performance and, ultimately, recruitment success. Nutrition, digestion et développement des larves de crevettes et poissons marins Auteur(s) : Cahu, Chantal Résumé : This report is presented by Chantal Cahu for obtaining accreditation to supervise research. Since 1981, her research activity has addressed the study of reproducers' nutrition and the young stages of development of marine organisms belonging to two different branch lines, crustaceans and fish. This work, performed in a base-lined research body, IFREMER, is placed within a more general programme of aquaculture development. Indeed, whatever species are at issue, the development of aquaculture in France, as at the global level, is based on the production of juveniles in hatcheries. My work has therefore more precisely the goal of acquiring knowledge about the nutritional needs, mechanisms of digestion and the development of these animals in order to improve the production of prawn post-larvae and fish alevin in the hatchery.
This work took place in three main periods that appear in this report:
- The study of reproducers' nutrition and its influence on the quality of the Penaeid prawn's eggs and larvae. My work has focused mainly on the effect of lipids and vitamins on the development of eggs and larvae.
- The study of the ontogenesis of the digestive functions and the nutritional needs of sea fish larvae, with bass as the model. The goal was to determine the specific nutritional needs of the young stages by studying the implementation and regulation of pancreatic and intestinal digestive enzymes.
- The study of the regulation of certain developmental genes by means of nutrients, so as to understand how these nutrients behave during ontogenesis, particularly during development of the skeleton.
Les ressources halieutiques de l'etang de Berre Auteur(s) : Le Corre, Gildas Garcia, Fabrice Résumé : Fishing activity in the french mediterranean lagoon Etang de Berre is actually allowed in spite of a degradation of the environment during the last fifty years. To analyse the results and the working of the fishery, a study based on a sampling survey of catches and fishing effort has been conducted in the various landing ports over a two years period. Annual weight and value productions by species and gear have been evaluated by mean of statistical calculation procedures. The results show that the fishery is based on the exploitation of two main species (anguilla and grey mullet) and that important variations exist between the two sampled years. The limits to be reached by the working of this fishery are prompted in the scope of a future regulation. Marine Turtles, Ecosystem Services and Human Welfare in the Marine Ecosystems of the Caribbean Sea: A Discussion of Key Methodologies Auteur(s) : S. Teelucksingh, Sonja Eckert, Scott A.L.D. Nunes, Paulo Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : It is increasingly recognized that maintaining biodiversity is of fundamental importance toward sustaining human livelihoods. One of the major assets of the region identified as “Latin America and the Caribbean” (LAC) is its biological wealth; by extension, the continued biodiversity loss of the LAC region is seen as one of the world’s principal environmental problems. The marine resources of Caribbean Sea are of vital economic, ecological and social importance to the LAC region, and are under particular threat. Marine turtles play vital roles throughout the Caribbean Sea both in terms of ecological functions and human welfare. Conservation efforts in this direction can often depend on the ability to place a value on welfare changes associated with the loss of ecosystem goods and services into which biodiversity plays an integral role.Using the ecosystem service categories of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, this paper discusses from an inter-disciplinary perspective the methodologies associated with linking marine turtles, ecosystem services and human welfare. While the main economic benefit to be currently valued may stem from the eco-tourism potential surrounding turtle nesting sites, for a true picture of the environmental resources upon which this service depends, it is necessary to also identify the other provisioning, regulating and cultural services of the resource. In this way, human welfare impacts can be more truly judged, and effective resource management can be undertaken.
