Joint use of echosounding, fishing and video techniques to assess the structure of fish aggregations around moored Fish Aggregating Devices in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) Auteur(s) : Doray, Mathieu Josse, E Gervain, P Reynal, Lionel Chantrel, Josselin Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : From April 2003 to April 2004 monthly sea surveys were conducted around 2 fish aggregating devices (FADs) moored at 2000 and 2500 m depth in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). The use of a dual frequency splitbeam echosounder combined with an underwater camera and fishing methods allowed assessment of average space and time distribution of pelagic fish aggregated beneath the FADs, as well as identification of their overall size and species composition. At daytime, 4 fish aggregations were identified at each FAD, representing 4 distinct types: i) an aggregation of small juvenile tuna (mean fork length, FL: 30 cm) observed very close to the surface in 25% of daytime periods; ii) a small surface aggregation dominated by carangids, Caranx crysos, present in 65% of daytime periods; iii) a large sub-surface aggregation observed during all daytime periods: this aggregation appeared to be primarily comprised of 58 cm FL blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus), mixed with yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) tunas of the same size; and iv) sub-surface scattered large predators (mainly blue marlin, Makaira nigricans) present in 10% of daytime periods. A smaller sub-surface aggregation comprised of medium tuna mixed with "extranatants" (fishes which remain within 10 to 50 m of a FAD) was observed in 75% of night-time periods, whereas unidentified scattered fishes were detected from 70 to 400 m depth. The low daytime vulnerability of medium sub-surface tunas to applied line techniques leads us to assume that their feeding motivation was low during daytime. These tunas could preferentially feed on mesopelagic organisms during night-time and transition periods around Martinican moored FADs. Local fishermen mainly targeted the large scattered predators using very small tunas as living bait. The sub-surface tuna aggregation hence appeared to be currently unexploited by local fisheries, though it represented the large majority of the pelagic biomass around the moored FADs. Environmental noise in spawning areas: the case of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) Auteur(s) : Royer, Francois Fromentin, Jean-marc Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : This paper provides an exploratory analysis aiming to seek whether the colour of environmental noise theory could help in understanding the intriguing reproductive strategy of Atlantic bluefin tuna (BFT). A frequency-based approach based on spectral exponents, f(beta) with beta < 0, is chosen and applied on 10 biogeographical provinces covering the North Atlantic. The major BFT spawning area, i.e. the Mediterranean Sea, was the only one to display a pink power spectrum, whereas open ocean regions displayed more reddened fluctuations, i.e. greater variance at low frequencies. Environmental noise in the Mediterranean could, thus, offer more favourable characteristics on the long-term than the open ocean. The implications of these findings are discussed in regards to medium and long (possibly evolutionary) time scales. Technique de pêche à la Palangre du Requin Sonneur (Lamna nasus Bonnaterre) et de l'Espadon (Xiphias gladius Linnaeus) en Atlantique Nord-Est Auteur(s) : Le Gall, Jean-yves Mallet, G. Éditeur(s) : Société franco-japonaise d'océanographie Résumé : French fishermen have been fishing porbeagle shark Lamna nasus on the edges of the continental shelf, from the Bay of Biscay to the south of Ireland. Incidentally, until the past few years, when, during summer, bluefin tunas Thunnus thynnus, albacores Thunnus alalunga and sworfishes Xiphias gladius were caught on the same line. Since 1970, some fishermen have started focusing on swordfish. The authors describe the technique and gear used for this fishery. A fishery that could largely develop in the years to come. Hydrological and trophic characteristics of tuna habitat: consequences on tuna distribution and longline catchability Auteur(s) : Bertrand, Arnaud Josse, Erwan Bach, Pascal Gros, Philippe Dagorn, Laurent Éditeur(s) : NRC Résumé : We studied relationships between tropical tunas (albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)) and their biotic and abiotic environments through simultaneous acoustic observations of tunas and their prey, experimental longline catch, and oceanographic data in French Polynesia. Vertical habitat limits were estimated based on temperature and dissolved oxygen at capture data. We then studied tuna-micronekton relationships to better understand how tuna occupy the pelagic space, At a regional scale, tunas were more abundant in areas rich in prey with favourable hydrological conditions. Inside such areas, at the scale of a longline set, however, the longline catches were maximal only when prey were not distributed in dense patches (except for yellowfin tuna). We interpreted this result by considering that areas with high prey abundance attract tunas, but at a small scale, if prey are patchy distributed, tunas are more inclined to feed on them rather than on longline baits. The effect of patches on yellowfin tuna catch per unit effort (CPUE) does not appear likely because this species also feeds on the mixed layer, where patch density was very low. Not only hydrological characteristics, but also prey density and prey patch characteristics, should be taken into account for interpreting longline CPUE data. Differentiation of albacore stock: review by oceanic regions Auteur(s) : Nikolic, Natacha Bourjea, Jerome Éditeur(s) : ICCAT Résumé : Because one of the most common problems in fisheries is the definition of management units, we propose in this paper a bibliometric review focusing on the differentiation of Albacore populations, Thunnus alalunga, among and within oceanic regions (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, and Mediterranean Sea). This paper is the first step of a current work on a global review of Albacore tuna using an international aquatic database (ASFA). For the present purpose, 367 publications, mainly composed of articles (64%), but also conference papers, proceedings and reports (24%), and books (12%), were analyzed. We will see that the concept of the stock and its delimitation is controversial because of the divergence of results. Such a conclusion makes us believe in the urgent need of further studies targeting this currently overexploited species in most regions of the world, in order to improve management units currently used by regional organizations for fishery management. Accumulation and mobilization of lipids in relation to reproduction of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the Western Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Zudaire, Iker Murua, Hilario Grande, Maitane Pernet, Fabrice Bodin, Nathalie Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Total lipid content and lipid class composition were analyzed in gonads, liver and white muscle of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) throughout ovary development to understand its reproductive allocation strategy and to assess the relation between female condition and reproduction. A total of 112 females were collected onboard purse-seiner in the Western Indian Ocean from January to March 2009, from June to July 2009, and from April to May 2010. Gonads were characterized by highly variable total lipid contents ranging from 5 to 27 μg mg−1 of wet weight (ww) with a predominance of neutral lipids, mainly triacylglycerols (TAG) and sterol- and wax-esters. The different lipid classes in gonads described an accumulative pattern through the maturity process from immature to hydration phase. Total lipid content in liver varied from 10 to 21 μg mg−1 ww, and serves as fuel for yellowfin tuna reproduction. TAG and phospholipid deposits became depleted as the ovary developed, suggesting a transfer of lipids directly from liver to the oocytes during vitellogenesis. In contrast, muscle total lipid content was low and constant throughout ovarian development (2.5–6 μg mg−1 ww). Hence, yellowfin tuna can be defined as an income-capital breeder species for which the cost of reproduction depends mainly on concurrent energy income from feeding and only little on stored lipids. Besides, no significant relationship between gonad lipid composition and fecundity was found in females able to spawn. Finally, the influence of yellowfin tuna aggregation behaviour on reproductive female condition has been investigated: gonad total lipid contents were higher in females caught in free-swimming schools than in females caught under fish aggregating devices (FADs). However, these results did not clarify whether the influence of FADs on associated yellowfin tuna affects their reproductive capacity. Fluctuations à long terme du thon rouge: validité, origines et conséquences Auteur(s) : Ravier, Christelle Éditeur(s) : Ecole nationale supérieure agronomique de Rennes Résumé : Describe and gain understanding on fluctuations in animal population over time and space is a central goal of population ecology. This is also crucial to ensure the sustainable management of exploited resources, particularly those with complex population dynamics such as the bluefin tuna. The goal of this work is to collect bluefin tuna catches from the ancestral Mediterranean and Atlantic trap fisheries to (i) characterise long-term fluctuations in bluefin tuna population migrating in the Mediterranean, (ii) analyse their causes et (iii) assess their implications for fisheries management. The bluefin tuna main biological and ecological characteristics are first detailed. Then, the first part presents the trap fishery, and the process of collect and validation of the historical catches. This leads to develop a data base of 54 time-series more than 20 years long, the longest ones spanning about four centuries. Mean historical catches were around 15 000 tons/year ([7 000;25 000]). Time-series are analysed in a second part. Temporal variability of trap catches may be decomposed in three components: 100-year-long periodic fluctuations, 20-year cycles and inter-annual variations. These medium- to long-term fluctuations, representing more than 50% of the variability in the time-series, were synchronous all around the western Mediterranean and adjacent North Atlantic. In contrast, short-term variability was synchronous at a local scale only. It is argued that long-term fluctuations in trap catches could be considered as a proxy for those in abundance, and a synthetic time-series is computed to depict them. Biological and ecological processes that could cause such long-term fluctuations are discussed in a third part. We tested whether long-term fluctuations in Atlantic bluefin tuna might be related to large-scale environmental changes, using long time-series of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Length of the Day index (LOD, a proxy of the atmospheric circulation index ACI) and the temperature. Spectral analyses of trap catches, LOD and temperature displayed similar spectra with peak at low frequency, whereas those of the NAO exhibited a broad band spectrum. Regression analyses and tests of correlation did not reveal any clear relationship between trap catches on the one hand and NAO and LOD on the other hand. In contrast, long-term fluctuations in trap catches appear to be negatively and significantly related to long-term trends in temperature. Underlying processes that could explain such a relationship are discussed, with special focus on changes in migration patterns. Finally, implications of such fluctuations in term of fisheries management are discussed in a fourth part. A simulation framework, in which a simulated population dynamics model is coupled with a VPA, is built to test the pertinence of the diagnostic of stock assessment according to different scenarios on fluctuations origins and population status. In the hypothesis of fluctuations linked to variations in the recruitment, VPA appears able to reconstruct the fluctuations but the predictions may be biased if natural fluctuations are not taking into account. In the hypothesis of fluctuations linked to changes in migration pattern, VPA is not able to reconstruct the population dynamics. In a precautionary approach, quotas which follow may be unsuitable in the best case, at worst dangerous if they are defined in comparison with a reference point. The concept of cible reference points, fixe and unique over time, appears not relevant for bluefin tuna; estimate trajectory reference pertinent may prove to be more pertinent. A review: pelagic fishes at petroleum platforms in the Northern Gulf of Mexico; diversity, interrelationships, and perspective Auteur(s) : Franks, J Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Approximately 4,000 petroleum (oil and gas) platforms exist in the northern Gulf of Mexico and form one of the world's most extensive de facto artificial reef systems. Collectively, these structures may comprise one of the largest fad (Fish Aggregating Device) arrays in the world, attracting surface and midwater pelagic fishes. The diverse composition of pelagic fish fauna at ngom platforms is described and includes valued species such as Thunnus albacares, Thunnus atlanticus, Coryphaena hippurus, Acanthocybium solandri, Rachycentron canadum, Seriola dumerili, Scomberomorus cavalla, and Decapterus punctatus. Petroleum platforms influence pelagic fishery resources and are an important component of the Gulf's commercial and recreational fishing industries. Reviewed literature revealed a sparsity of fundamental knowledge of densities, temporal and spatial occurrence, and fishing effort/catch rates of pelagic fishes at platforms. The role of Gulf petroleum platforms "as fads" is examined, possible mechanisms for aggregation are reviewed, and a synopsis of the author's preliminary findings on life history aspects of A. solandri and R. canadum from platforms is presented. It is proposed that platforms provide opportunities for the study of pelagic species to better understand the life history, ecology, behaviour, and habitat requirements of pelagic fishery resources in the Gulf of Mexico. Age and growth of blackfin tuna (Thunnus atianticus) caught under moored fish aggregating devices, around Martinique Island Auteur(s) : Doray, Mathieu Stequert, Bernard Taquet, Marc Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Daily growth increments measured in the otolith of Thunnus atlanticus were used to estimate the age and growth of individuals. which were sampled from an artisanal fishery operating around fish aggregating devices (FADs) moored off Martinique Island. In this study, 76 otoliths were analysed for fish ranging from 20 to 68 cm fork lengths (FL). The fish were caught using trolling lines at depths ranging from 0 to 10 m. Counts were made, under a light microscope, on the external part of the transverse section of the sagittae, from the primordium to the ventral edge. The mean coefficient of variation of the age reading was 2.4%. To validate readings, the number of increments for 11 individuals was counted using both optic and scanning electron microscopes. The calculated relationship between readings of both methods was found to be linear, with a slope of 1.03 and R-2 = 0.99. Frequency of growth increment formation could not be validated. Growth rates derived from otolith readings were, however, compared to those obtained using a modal progression analysis, which was performed on the length-frequency distributions of the landings over a period of two months. The corroboration between the growth rates was good. One increment was assumed to represent one day. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth curve for both sexes were L-infinity = 71.4 cm FL, k = 0.002 day(-1) and tau(0) = -80 days. According to our results, there is no evidence that Martinican moored FADs act as ecological traps for blackfin tuna. Instead, young blackfin tuna probably leave the vicinity of Martinican moored FADs to undergo a trophic migration at 7 to 8 month-old, and then come back about 8 months later to breed in the Lesser Antilles area. Application of Leslie's model on a population of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis): Sensitivity study Auteur(s) : Fifas, Spyros Goujon, Michel Antoine, Loic Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The rapid development of the albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) driftnet fishery in the Pay of Biscay (Atlantic ocean, France) has incited European management authorities to ask for a study of its ecological impact on populations of common dolphins and striped dolphins. A programme with onboard observers has been led during 1992 and 1993, and a sighting survey has allowed the evaluation of the abundances of fractions of populations in the studied area. For the population of common dolphins, the biological parameter estimation has allowed the building of a discrete age-structured model based on a Leslie matrix. Sensitivity studies have been conducted using four model parameters (age of first reproduction, interval between births, juvenile and adult survival rates). Results show that the increase rate of the population presents the highest sensitivity versus adult survival rate and, in second place versus the interval between births. The length frequency distribution of blackfin tunas (Thunnus atlanticus) shows a significant difference between fishes caught with a longline, during Ifremer experimental surveys and fishes landed by fishermen who exploit martinican FADs. The fishing technique used could probably explain this. In fact, diving surveys have confirmed the presence of great concentrations of adult blackfin tunas under FADs. Big individuals stay during long periods between 20 and 50 meters under the FAD while small ones go up to the surface to feed on little flying fishes, at dawn principally. The bait and the line used at the moment around martinican FADs do not fit to adult blackfin tunas fishing. From these observations and following the tests realized by Ifremer in La Reunion in 1990, we proposed to martinican fishermen to test a new technique based on the utilization of live bait locally called "coulirous" (Selar crumenophthalmus). In La Reunion, this technique has been successful. Live baits are hooked on a vertical longline. In Martinique, the tests to catch live bait during the night near the shore have been already successful and the first fishing experiences with vertical line are also encouraging. This paper aims at proposing and transfering this technique to martinican fishermen but technical exchanges and discussions are needed to improve this new fishing technique. Biogeography of tuna and billfish communities Auteur(s) : Reygondeau, Gabriel Maury, Olivier Beaugrand, Gregory Fromentin, Jean-marc Fonteneau, Alain Cury, Philippe Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Résumé : Aim The aims of this study were: (1) to identify global communities of tuna and billfish species through quantitative statistical analyses of global fisheries data; (2) to describe the spatial distribution, main environmental drivers and species composition of each community detected; and (3) to determine whether the spatial distribution of each community could be linked to the environmental conditions that affect lower trophic levels by comparing the partitions identified in this study with Longhursts biogeochemical provinces. Location The global ocean from 60 degrees S to 65 degrees N. Methods We implemented a new numerical procedure based on a hierarchical clustering method and a nonparametric probabilistic test to divide the oceanic biosphere into biomes and ecoregions. This procedure was applied to a database that comprised standardized data on commercial longline catches for 15 different species of tuna and billfish over a period of more than 50 years (i.e. 1953-2007). For each ecoregion identified (i.e. characteristic tuna and billfish community), we analysed the relationships between species composition and environmental factors. Finally, we compared the biogeochemical provinces of Longhurst with the ecoregions that we identified. Results Tuna and billfish species form nine well-defined communities across the global ocean. Each community occurs in regions with specific environmental conditions and shows a distinctive species composition. High similarity (68.8% homogeneity) between the spatial distribution of the communities of tuna and billfish and the biogeochemical provinces suggests a strong relationship between these species and the physical and chemical characteristics of the global ocean. Main conclusions Despite their high tolerance for a wide range of environmental conditions, these highly migratory species are partitioned into clear geographical communities in the ocean at a global scale. The similarity between biogeochemical and biotic divisions in the ocean suggests that the global ocean is a mosaic of large biogeographical ecosystems, each characterized by specific environmental conditions that have a strong effect on the composition of the trophic web. Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) fishing around FADs in Martinique (French West Indies) Auteur(s) : Taquet, Marc Reynal, Lionel Laurans, Martial Lagin, Alain-sabin Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : This paper examines the fishing of blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) around Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in Martinique (French West Indies). It is based on the compared analysis of catches from monthly experimental fishing surveys and sampling of commercial landings. The data collected in these two different ways allowed comparison of blackfin tuna length frequencies. A large part of the commercial landings were made up of young immature tuna with a fork length of less than 40 cm, whereas the experimental longline catches were mainly made up of fish with a fork length ranging between 55 and 75 cm. We give evidence that these discrepancies were mostly due to the fishing technique used. Indeed, contrarily to the experimental surveys, Martinican fishermen only fish during daytime and usually on the surface by trolling. This way, fishermen do not have access to the largest fish, which are found deeper. Out results suggested that a new fishing technique such as vertical longlining, could improve commercial catches of big blackfin tuna under FADs. Development and characterization of microsatellite markers for blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) with the use of Illumina paired-end sequencing Auteur(s) : Antoni, Luca Luque, Patricia L. Naghshpour, Kaylie Reynal, Lionel Saillant, Eric Éditeur(s) : Natl Marine Fisheries Service Scientific Publ Office Résumé : Twenty homologous microsatellite markers, or simple sequence repeats (SSRs), were developed for blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) through the use of a direct Seq-to-SSR approach. The number of alleles per locus ranged between 5 and 26, and the expected heterozygosity ranged between 0.640 and 0.969. Three loci displayed significant departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations, likely reflecting occurrence of null alleles. Another locus showed consecutive alleles that differed by one base pair only. Consequently, this locus may be prone to elevated rates of scoring errors. The remaining 16 loci will be valuable for studies in conservation genetics of blackfin tuna. Current, catch and weight composition of yellowfin tuna with FADs off Okinawa island, Japan Auteur(s) : Kakuma, S Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a main target for the fisheries at Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) off the south of Okinawa island. Catch and weight composition of the tuna were monitored at a fisheries cooperative market from 1989 to 1998. Some distinct weight groups (considered to represent cohorts) appeared in the catch and the weight of these groups increased monthly - presumably as individual tuna grew. Although small, light weight fish were caught year-round, the 2 kg weight group that was recruited in May grew to about 15 kg by May of the next year. There was a significant seasonal cycle in the monthly catches. The catch of heavier weight groups decreased in winter indicating the tuna moved out of this FAD area. At one of huge FADs (Nirai), fifteen nautical miles southeast of Okinawa island (depth about 1.300 m), a current meter (Aanderaa RCM-7) recorded current and water temperature from June 1995 to March 1996. The current meter was attached to the FAD at 4 m depth. When typhoons attacked Okinawa, the water temperature drastically dropped. Typically, average current speed was 29 cm/s and eastward current was most frequent. Being affected by tide, the current was averaged over twenty-five hours. Current speed was correlated with the yellowfin catch in 120 daily sets at the FAD; the weaker the current speed, the greater the catch. Although not significant, the catch was greater with northeastward current than with southwestward current. L'agrégation de thons de sub-surface au sein du système [DCP ancré - macronecton - environnement - pêche] en Martinique : étude hiérarchique par méthodes acoustiques, optiques et halieutiques Auteur(s) : Doray, Mathieu Éditeur(s) : Ecole Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Rennes (ENSAR) Résumé : Artificial Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) are known to concentrate tropical tunas. This aggregative behaviour drastically increases the vulnerability of these species to fishing. Alternatively, FADs can be used as oceanic observatories to study the aggregative behaviour of large pelagic fish. We conducted sea surveys in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) to i) establish a typology of the pelagic fish aggregations found around moored FADs ii) study their relations with their biotic and abiotic environment and the local fishery. The mean biomass of large pelagic fish aggregations was also estimated to provide scientific inputs to achieve a sustainable management of the moored FAD fishery. The first part presents the background of the study. We introduce the regional pelagic ecosystem, the aggregative behaviour of pelagic fish around FADs and the Martinican moored FAD fishery. The second part begins with a presentation of the conceptual framework of the study: the hierarchy theory. Observation scales and survey methodology are therefore described. Repeated echosounder surveys run in a star pattern were conducted around 2 moored FADs, in combination with underwater video observations, classical fishing experiments and CTD profiles. In the third part, the elements of the [moored FAD ¿ pelagic fish - environment - fishing] system and their interactions are numerically characterised in the vertical plane. The main type of pelagic fish aggregation was a large aggregation distributed in sub-surface (40-100 m) within a radius of 400 m of the FAD. This aggregation was mostly made of 60 cm FL blackfin tunas (Thunnus atlanticus). It appeared at sunrise and mostly spread away in the late afternoon. It was observed during all daytime surveys. The average density and the vertical structure of the micronektonic sound scattering layers (SSLs) were assessed locally around a FAD for 48h cycles. These SSLs descriptors showed positive correlation with the size and the abundance of the sub-surface tuna aggregation. Whereas this aggregation accounted for about 95% of the total biomass aggregated around a moored FAD, it was nearly unexploited by the local commercial fishermen. The fourth part focuses on the sub-surface tuna aggregation. A high variability of the spatial distribution of the aggregation was evidenced in the horizontal plane at daily, day to day and monthly temporal scales. These variations were related to fluctuations of the global abundance of the aggregation. The daytime average density of sub-surface tuna was modelled as a function of the distance to FAD, within an advection-diffusion framework. Based on these results, a universal kriging model was designed to assess the mean maximum daily biomass of the sub-surface tuna aggregation. This mean biomass estimate yielded 11 tons with an estimation error of 26%. To conclude, we present a hierarchical organization in space and time of a sub-surface tuna population distributed within a network of moored FADs, from micro to meso-scale. We suggest that the spatial distribution of tunas can be explained from fine to coarse-scales by behavioural processes (self-organization, feeding, aggregative behaviour) whereas their spatial distribution is mainly forced by environmental processes at broader scales. Mercury content in commercial pelagic fish and its risk assessment in the Western Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Kojadinovic, Jessica Potier, M Le Corre, M Cosson, R Bustamante, Paco Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : As top predators of pelagic food webs, large fish naturally bioaccumulate mercury (Hg). Determining Hg burdens in commercialized fish is essential considering the concern about effects of contaminants on human health and the legal thresholds that are therefore set for local consumption and/or exportation. Total Hg levels were measured in the muscular tissue of 183 fish of five commercially important species from the tropical zone of the Western Indian Ocean. All individuals were measured and sexed in order to study the impregnation of Hg with size and sex within each species. Values of Hg found in this part of the Indian Ocean were comparable to Hg in muscular tissue of the same species studied in other areas. The highest Hg levels were noted in Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) caught in waters surrounding Reunion Island (3.97 +/- 2.67 mu g g(-1) dry weight). Following the Swordfish, in decreasing order of Hg content, were the Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) and the Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), then the Common Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and the Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri). In the North of the Mozambique Channel, Swordfish had higher Hg levels than Yellowfin Tunas, and Dolphinfish exhibited intermediate Hg levels. The size of a fish was a determining factor of its Hg burden, as was the species. Differences in size-normalized Hg levels were observed between the two study zones for Swordfish and Common Dolphinfish. Sex, in contrast, did not influence Hg levels suggesting that females and males have similar feeding habits. The muscular Hg levels presented here suggest that consumers of fish originating from the Western Indian Ocean should limit themselves to one Swordfish based meal per week, or one fish meal a day if they choose to eat tuna or Common Dolphinfish.
