With the eutrophication of water bodies, cyanobacterial blooms and their toxins are becoming increasingly prevalent in France, especially in the Brittany region. Cyanobacteria are monitored at only a few recreational sites, preventing an estimation of exposure of the human population. By contrast, phosphorus, a limiting nutrient for cyanobacterial growth and thus considered a good proxy for cyanobacteria exposure, is monitored in many but not all surface water bodies. Our goal was to develop a geographic exposure indicator that could be used in epidemiological research. We considered the total phosphorus (TP) concentration (mg/L) of samples collected between October 2007 and September 2012 at 179 monitoring stations distributed throughout the Brittany region. Using readily available spatial data, we computed environmental descriptors at the watershed level with a Geographic Information System. Then, these descriptors were introduced into a backward stepwise linear regression model to predict the median TP concentration in unmonitored surface water bodies. TP concentrations in surface water follow an increasing gradient from West to East and inland to coast. The empirical concentration model included five predictor variables with a fair coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.51). The specific total runoff and the watershed slope correlated negatively with the TP concentrations (p = 0.01 and p < 10− 9, respectively), whereas positive associations were found for the proportion of built-up area, the upstream presence of sewage treatment plants, and the algae volume as indicated by the Landsat red/green reflectance ratio (p < 0.01, p < 10− 6 and p < 0.01, respectively). Complementing the monitoring networks, this geographical modeling can help estimate TP concentrations at the watershed level, delivering a proxy for cyanobacteria exposure that can be used along with other risk factors in further ALS epidemiologic case–control studies ISSN: 0160-4120 hal-01175538 https://hal-univ-rennes1.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01175538 DOI : 10.1016/j.envint.2015.04.007 PUBMED : 25913322 | Partager |
![]() | Composition and Genesis of Depleted Mantle Peridotites from the Wadi Tayin Massif, Oman Ophiolite; Major and Trace Element Geochemistry, and Os Isotope and PGE Systematics Auteur(s) : Hanghoj, Karen Kelemen, Peter B. Hassler, Deborah Godard, Marguerite Auteurs secondaires : Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) ; Columbia University [New York] Statoil Gulf of Mexico LLC, Houston ; Université du Québec Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Oxford University Press (OUP) Résumé : The Oman ophiolite consists of several massifs cropping out along a 500 km long band trending NW-SE along the coast of Oman; it is one of the best exposed sections of oceanic crust and mantle in the world. There is a gradient in igneous processes and composition in the ophiolite, with the northern massifs recording a polygenetic igneous history involving an increasingly important subduction component, whereas the southern massifs were formed primarily via a mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-like, single-stage process at a submarine spreading ridge. In this study we use geochemical data from Wadi Tayin, which is one of the southern massifs of the Oman ophiolite, to constrain the composition and genesis of oceanic crust and upper mantle. The Wadi Tayin harzburgites are residues of partial melting that are as depleted as the most depleted mid-ocean ridge peridotites. They have low middle- to heavy rare earth element ratios, most probably reflecting melting close to and beyond the exhaustion of clinopyroxene. Like many abyssal peridotites, the Wadi Tayin samples show enrichment in highly incompatible elements, giving rise to U-shaped MORB-normalized trace element patterns. We favor the idea that this is caused by enrichment of highly incompatible elements along grain boundaries in peridotite, which may be the result of near-equilibrium partitioning between grain boundaries and grain interiors, rather than disequilibrium processes. Equilibrium partitioning between crystals and grain boundaries during melting and melt extraction is also our preferred explanation for ubiquitous high Pb contents relative to Ce and La in our samples as well as in most abyssal peridotites. The Wadi Tayin samples record substantial variability in terms of osmium isotopic composition and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations. The more radiogenic nature of the dunites and impregnated peridotites compared with the residual harzburgites may be due to relatively high Os-187/Os-188 in melt transported through the dunites. The presence of residual peridotites with whole-rock osmium isotopic compositions less radiogenic than MORB may be explained by melting of a veined (upwelling) mantle forming mixed melts in which much of the Os derives from veins with high Re/Os in a matrix of previously depleted peridotite. An important result of this study is that the shallowest samples are refertilized (i.e. anomalously enriched in incompatible elements), and record relatively high metamorphic closure temperatures. These observations suggest that migrating melt underwent crystallization during rapid cooling in the uppermost mantle during and immediately after ridge magmatism. A variety of geothermometers all yield the result that the stratigraphically highest harzburgites equilibrated at higher temperature than the deeper ones. The systematic decrease in closure temperature with increasing depth below the Moho transition zone probably reflects systematic variation in cooling rate as a function of depth in the mantle section. We hypothesize that the refertilization and higher closure temperatures recorded by the uppermost mantle samples are linked. More rapid cooling led to higher closure temperatures, and to partial crystallization of migrating melts in the shallowest part of the mantle section, yielding slightly elevated abundances of elements such as Ca and Na, and incompatible trace elements. The management of Norway Lobster and Hake fisheries can be considered as the most important issue in the Gascogne gulf. Calculation methods used to evaluate prediction variations under various efforts and mesh constraints all pinpoint to the crucial role narrow mesh fishing plays in Hakes' Northern stock status. The involvement of Gascogne gulf Norway Lobster fisheries regarding Hakes over exploitation seems over dimensioned when comparing the size of both of these stocks. Hake stocks spread from Northern Great Britain to Northern Spain, while Norway Lobster stocks are located in the Gascogne gulf's mud flats. The biological solution is well known and consists in globally increasing mesh nets to 80mm which would bring up Hakes yield to its most. It would be unreal to pretend all parties involved in Hake stocks will come to use them. For now, it is mostly an economical issue since many vessels continue on with an exploitation scheme dating from the 60's and fish on coastal mud flats which are the most exploited zones and where their catch is detrimental to juvenile class Hakes and Norway Lobsters. Considering our limited time, this study will cover bio- economical modelisation preparation. You will therefore find a description of fisheries and an exploitation assessment based on 1986's available data.
2 - Accomplished work
2. 1 Fishery description
Presenting the problems and preparing ulterior analyses was first and foremost. Norway Lobster vessels supposedly, according to evaluation models used, test immature Hakes in such a manner that all stock exploitation is jeopardized. Norway Lobster distribution is closely linked to the nature of the ocean floor since it can only build its habitat on fine sediment. Hakes' habitat is not as restrictive and is linked to food supply, especially euphausiid shrimps, so they can be found on sandy and sandy-sedimental floors. Norway Lobsters are sought by a fleet of 400 to 450 ships which characteristics widely vary according to their home port. On the northern part, fisheries are close to exploitation ports where Norway Lobsters and miscellaneous catch yield is sufficient to support an older fleet. On the southern part, the structure is diversified and flexibility usually rules, more modern vessels can easily switch their target on a seasonal or daily basis. Globally, Hakes' northern stocks are slightly on the rise. This rise is probably due to global mesh size increase, even if slight and a decrease on fishing effort where immature species are caught. Norway Lobster stocks unloading is stable or slightly lower and yields, as far as northern fishery are concerned, vary and oscillate between ±15 to ±20 % at about an average of 100 kg/day. Biological parameters used in the evaluations for each species are those used in CIEM and CEE work cells. Among those parameters, those describing growth are the greatest. For Hakes, an intermediary growth equation between males and females has been used. For Norway Lobsters, both sexes are treated separately. Simulations were carried out according to 3 types of data: Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort variations. Norway Lobster vessels mesh increase. Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort decrease or mesh increasing go along in the same direction for Hake and Norway Lobster stock production (chart A and B). Lastly, a brief study on results evaluation significance was done to modify: - the size of Hake rejects by Norway Lobster vessels. The range of sizes stays the same but the amount in each class varies according to the same percentage. - Norway Lobsters growth parameters, both values used (L» = 76 mm and k = 0.11 for males, L°° = 56 mm and k = 0.14 for females) representing the "high" hypothesis. In the first case, a 20% error rate for rejects evaluation with 60 mm mesh would only bring a 3% modification rate on global stock production. Those first results are contradicting usual evaluation conclusions and it will be necessary to recalculate by modifying the size class step. In the second case, to decrease L» and increase growth speed, in time production variations remain within usual inter annual fluctuations. In all figure cases, calculations confirming greater yield for in time production through hypothetical mesh size increase to 60 mm, are definitely well founded.
The vertebral mean vary from 50,68 (vertebrae) during the first year of life to 51,11 (vertebrae) for adults. 0-group Merluccius display a rapid growth with significant interannual variability (0.71 mm.day-1 in 2001 versus 0.74 mm.day-1 in 2002). The spawning period occurs in April and the average length on the firth January following the hatching is of 17.3 cm (first seasonal check / increment on the sagittal otolith is located about 0.143 cm from the nucleus). At the end of the first year of life the average length is about 24 cm. The longevity of the species is important and growth parameters (L = 138,24 cm ; K = 0,132) explain natural mortality coefficient of M = 0.21. No difference for growth between male and female has been observed for this stock. The ratio total weight / eviscerated weight is equal to Fc = 1,086. Both male and female have same spatial and bathymetric distribution. Juveniles are found in deep waters (< 17 cm length) and move to coastal waters where they display an average length of (33 cm length). Longer individuals are found in nursery areas where they feed and grow then move to deeper areas to spawn. Nursery areas are numerous and located in the Celtic Sea and in the bay of Biscay. In the bay of Biscay, disturbances resulted from hydrondynamics affect the settlement on the nursery grounds particularly in the southern part of the bay. Diet composition varies with age. Juveniles feed mainly on crustaceans (Euphausia kroni). At the length of 23 cm, individuals feed strictly on fishes. Sizes of preys are proportional with sizes of predators and preys are composed mainly of species that feed and reproduce close to the bottom. Cannibalism has been observed for this specie, and increases with age notably in the northern part of the bay of Biscay and in the Celtic Sea. Main preys are 0-group juveniles. This specie is assumed to be a passive predator catching its preys when they come to feed in the bottom. Although they are punctual, these results have been obtained after studies on the evolution of sizes during the first year of life (daily increments measurements) and on the spawning period parameters (back-calculating). Average length on the firth January following hatching and the position of the first seasonal check on the otolith are based on observations of the sizes on the firth January following hatching (obtained with growth rates and spawning period parameters). The results are similar to those described in previous studies, nevertheless they have to be confirmed with growth and diet composition analyses. A long term study appear essential to determine biological and ecological parameters of this species for sustainable management of the stock. The 3-DVM is constructed from the integration of geophysical and geological data that depend on the structural geometry and velocity properties of the crust and the upper mantle. In addition, specific station selection is carried out to compensate for the high station density on the Andean Chain. 3-D synthetic experiments are then designed to evaluate the network capacity to recover the event position using only P arrivals and the MAXI technique. Three synthetic earthquake location experiments are proposed: (1) noise-free and (2) noisy arrivals used in the 3-DVM, and (3) noise-free arrivals used in a 1-DVM. Synthetic results indicate that, under the best conditions (exact arrival data set and 3-DVM), the spatiotemporal configuration of the Ecuadorian network can accurately locate 70 per cent of events in the frontal part of the subduction zone (average azimuthal gap is 289° ± 44°). Noisy P arrivals (up to ± 0.3 s) can accurately located 50 per cent of earthquakes. Processing earthquake location within a 1-DVM almost never allows accurate hypocentre position for offshore earthquakes (15 per cent), which highlights the role of using a 3-DVM in subduction zone. For the application to real data, the seismicity distribution from the 3-D-MAXI catalogue is also compared to the determinations obtained in a 1-D-layered VM. In addition to good-quality location uncertainties, the clustering and the depth distribution confirm the 3-D-MAXI catalogue reliability. The pattern of the seismicity distribution (a 13 yr record during the inter-seismic period of the seismic cycle) is compared to the pattern of rupture zone and asperity of the Mw = 7.9 1942 and the Mw = 7.7 1958 events (the Mw = 8.8 1906 asperity patch is not defined). We observe that the nucleation of 1942, 1958 and 1906 events coincides with areas of positive Simple Bouguer anomalies and areas where marine terraces are still preserved on the coastal morphology. From north to south: (1) the 1958 rupture zone is almost aseismic and is attributed to a zone of high coupling; (2) south of the Galera alignment (perpendicular to the trench), the 1942 rupture zone presents moderate seismicity, deeper on the seismogenic interplate zone, and abutting on the Jama cluster (to the south). This cluster is facing the Cabo Pasado cap and positive Bouguer anomalies on the overriding margin. We suspect that this cluster reflects a zone of local asperity (partial coupling). South of the Jama cluster, the spherical aseismic zone in the Bahia area is interpreted as having a low seismic coupling (steady creep motion or slow slip events). We suspect that the site that generated the three M > 7 events (1896, 1956 and 1998) correspond to a small patch of strong coupling. To the south, in the Manta-Puerto Lopez zone, the seismicity is mainly organized in earthquake swarms (1998, 2002, 2005). Although slow slip events have been observed in the area (Vallée et al. submitted), we infer from the coastline shape, the marine terraces and the high positive Bouguer anomalies that the seismicity here might reveal a significant amount of seismic coupling. ![]() | Field investigations and multi-indicators for shallow water lagoon management: perspective for societal benefit Auteur(s) : Brehmer, Patrice Thang Do Chi, Laugier, Thierry Galgani, Francois Laloe, Francis Darnaude, Audrey M. Fiandrino, Annie Mouillot, David Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Résumé : 1. Abiotic and biotic variables of coastal lagoons are highly heterogeneous in both space and time, and this heterogeneity complicates the assessment of their ecological status. These variables are essential to the monitoring and preservation of these fragile ecotones and the resources and services they sustain. 2. An integrative approach for evaluating the ecological status of coastal lagoons, based on field investigations of the key parameters driving their functioning and a set of selected ecological indicators matching lagoon management information needs for societal benefits, is investigated. Consistency in lagoon status evaluation from multiple and different variables was estimated, through a case study comparing three adjacent yet contrasting French Mediterranean shallow water lagoons. 3. French Mediterranean shallow water lagoons are used to demonstrate the potential of such an approach and to underline the need for a multi-faceted framework, for correctly evaluating lagoon status, and underlining the need for high-frequency lagoon monitoring to avoid errors in status assessment and resulting management plans. 4. Based on the results, a continuous monitoring system is proposed that would record high frequency biotic and abiotic data in the lagoons. The use of such an ad hoc observatory system, based on appropriate diagnostic indicators and risk estimators would simplify interactions between scientists and managers and would improve the efficiency of their analyses. 5. A lagoon management plan based on a holistic approach is proposed to help scientists and local managers to reach a consensus about the set of ecological indicators to monitor in the lagoons needed to assess their global health status in accordance with both conservation and/or societal needs. With its opening on the world market, the city of Algiers, or El-Djezaïr, (capital of Algeria) has become an attractive destination for business tourism. Although, its coast, rich in beaches and seaside resorts, often undergoes a massive tourism that endangers its environment identity. Hence, it would be of first interest to set-up a touristic development strategy aiming the littoral safeguard. The main scope of this paper is the littoral tourism requalification in Algiers by reinterpreting the leisure and recreation facilities that existed there before 1830. Moreover, it focus on the valuation of its territorial heritage: fountains, summer residences, and mostly the natural paths that used to connect the city port to the hinterland since the earliest times.Indeed, before 1830, El-Djezaïr had its "Fahs”, a territory famous by its "djenanes": a kind of summer residences within fabulous gardens facing the sea. Often seemed like deserted museums, the "djenanes" could constitute a key opportunity coastal tourism requalification. One of the alternatives would be their reconversion into touristic structures for scientific, business, leisure and recreational tourism. The paper presents the case of “La Villa du Traité”, a commemorative place related to the capitulation of the city of Algiers in 1830. The place is proposed to become a center of ethics where national and international scientific events in Medicine could be held. Cantonment fishing is a French legal and administrative tool used to manage fisheries resources and the regulation of fishing on marine site defined. This tool was developed in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) in 1999, at the request of fishermen facing depletion of fish stocks in the coastal strip. The competent authorities on the marine environment have installed this device on eight areas spread around the island (the Atlantic coast to the Caribbean coast). Cantonment fishing is little scientifically documented to date, apart from fishery surveys conducted by scientists-biologists. It is therefore appropriate to retrace the steps of the development of this tool and analyze the first results and challenges. ![]() | Etude des fonds de pêche du littoral atlantique martiniquais : ressources, exploitation, prospectives Auteur(s) : Farrugio, Henri Saint-felix, Christian Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The Atlantic coast of Martinique shows the typical characteristics of the tropical regions with a coral facies, and especially: a) a wide variety of sedentary animal species, especially coral fishes, of smaller sizes and numbers, thus forming smaller populations than those living under other latitudes ; b) the presence, between the shore and the reef barrier, of a shallow strip of soft bottoms, without any natural shelter, well protected, but with difficult access for off-shore species, and with a poor fauna. It is the major explanation for the weakness of the performances on this restricted continental shelf where, in addition, the fishing effort keeps growing. The complex relief of the reef makes the use of the trawl nets impossible and very difficult that of filtering nets, like bottom gillnets, which proved difficult to handle on the reef areas, as observed through this campaign. For these reasons, the Atlantic coast of Martinique is bound to an artisanal exploitation, whose expansion is very limited by the natural ecologic conditions. [...] Two field trips conducted in August 2010 and November2011 to the Chesterfield archipelago (Coral Sea) allowed us to assess the abundances and average sizes ofmedium-bodied Carcharhinidae with a specific focus on grey reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), throughfishing (46 hours of accumulated effort) and underwater visual censuses (25 hours of accumulated effort). Wefound low abundance and small average total length (TL) for all reef shark species, and in the case of the greyreef shark, an average abundance of 2.1 individuals/dive with the majority of animals less than 110 cm TL. Wecompared our findings with historical data and, given our low sampling effort, we so far hypothesise that a generalstrong decline in the reef shark populations may have occurred in this area, probably due to recent overfishing. The enforcement of conservation measures is strongly recommended among these remote reefs as well ascomplementary studies for confirming this hypothesis. The theoretical debate on migration and family is ambivalent. Migration can be seen from an “individualist’’ and distant logic of the family or, on the other hand, migration can be viewed as a strategy of survival for the family network. It is in the objective of contributing to this debate, the present article will analyze the migration process from a migrant strategy perspective, more specifically from the perspective of the “Hloua” migrants off the Benin coast. Four dimensions are of particular interest: the decision making process, the cost and organization of the trip, integration in the host community and the maintenance of relations with the host community. Within a large scale research on poverty and the strategies of survival of artisan fishing (Avloh, Ayiguinnou et Agoué) in Bénin, the present analysis is based on migration stories collected from returning migrants or from family members still living in the village. This story analysis has been completed with quantitative analyses on the frequency of the use of organization and decision making, the frequency of the use of residential and professional insertion, and the amount of remittances. The results show the central place of family ties during the migratory process from the start of the decision making process, the travel planning, the entrusting of the women and children of the migrant, to the residential establishment and the professional insertion in the host society. This network organizes and structures efficiently the migratory phenomenon by intervening during the decisive steps. However, once inserted, the connections maintained with the family network are limited for the majority to an affective solidarity characterized by telephone contacts or message transfers, and sometimes remittances sent back largely lower to the family’s expectations. This results more and more in the migrant diminishing the social capital of the family without always contributing in some substantially way on the financial side. A paradox which could find its explanation in future researches under a perspective of migrations’ dynamics. While injection approaches are increasingly used in an attempt to control COTS densities, most of them display severe drawbacks including logistical challenges, high residual environmental impacts or low cost-effectiveness. We tested a new alternative control method based upon acidic injections of cheap, 100% natural products. We investigated the lethal doses, intra-and inter-specific disease transmission and immune responses of COTS when injected with fresh lime juice (extracted from local Citrus arantifolia) and white spirit vinegar. High COTS mortality was achieved with small volumes: 10–20 ml per seastar induced death in 89%/ 97% of injected specimens after an average 34.3 h/29.8 h for lime juice and vinegar respectively. Highest efficiency was reached for both solutions with double shots of (2 × 10 ml) in two different areas on the body: 100% mortality occurred within 12–24 h, which is similar or faster compared with other current injection methods. Multiple immune measures suggested that death was very likely caused by pH stress from the acidic solutions rather than a bacterial infection. Contagion to either conspecifics or a variety of other reef species was not observed, even at COTS densities 15 times higher than the highest naturally reported. 10 to 20 l lime juice/vinegar could kill up to a thousand COTS at a cost of less than 0.05 USD per specimen; no permits or special handling procedures are required. We conclude that injections of lime juice and vinegar offer great advantages when compared to current best practises and constitute a cheap and natural option for all reefs affected by COTS. ![]() | Does coastal lagoon habitat quality affect fish growth rate and their recruitment? Insights from fishing and acoustic surveys Auteur(s) : Brehmer, Patrice Laugier, Thierry Kantoussan, J. Galgani, Francois Mouillot, D. Éditeur(s) : Academic Press Ltd- Elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Ensuring the sustainability of fish resources necessitates understanding their interaction with coastal habitats, which is becoming ever more challenging in the context of ever increasing anthropogenic pressures. The ability of coastal lagoons, exposed to major sources of disturbance, to provide resources and suitable habitats for growth and survival of juvenile fish is especially important. We analysed three lagoons with different ecological statuses and habitat quality on the basis of their eutrophication and ecotoxicity (Trix test) levels. Fish abundances were sampled using fishing and horizontal beaming acoustic surveys with the same protocols in the same year. The relative abundance of Anguilla anguilla, Dicentrarchus labrax or the Mugilidae group was not an indicator of habitat quality, whereas Atherina boyeri and Sparus aurata appeared to be more sensitive to habitat quality. Fish abundance was higher in the two lagoons with high eutrophication and ecotoxicity levels than in the less impacted lagoon, while fish sizes were significantly higher in the two most severely impacted lagoons. This leads us to suggest low habitat quality may increase fish growth rate (by the mean of a cascading effect), but may reduce lagoon juvenile abundance by increasing larval mortality. Such a hypothesis needs to be further validated using greater investigations which take into account more influences on fish growth and recruitment in such variable environments under complex multi-stressor conditions. Auteur(s) : Marchand, Michel Éditeur(s) : Société Française de Chimie Résumé : The coastal marine environment presents some specificity compared to other aquatic environments: it is both the receiving end of pollution on land and the most biologically rich marine area, where are developing many uses (fisheries and aquaculture, salt production, tourism, thalassotherapy). The coastal zone is therefore vulnerable to chronic chemical pollution and its protection requires research, monitoring and regulation. A dual strategy can be put into place: a preventive approach to avoid placing on the market of toxic substances to humans and the environment, and a retrospective approach based on public policies for the protection and restoration of degraded aquatic environments. In the framework of OHM-CV, temporary GPS measurements have been carried out for 2 months in autumn 2002, when the heaviest rainfall are expected. These measurements increase the spatial density of the existing permanent GPS network, by adding three more receivers between the Mediterranean coast and the Cévennes-Vivarais range to monitor maritime source of water vapour flow feeding the precipitating systems over the Cévennes-Vivarais region. In addition, a local network of 18 receivers covered an area of 30 by 30 km within the field of view of the meteorological radar. These regional and local networks of permanent and temporary stations are used to monitor the precipitable water vapour (PWV) with high temporal resolution (15 min). Also, the dense local network provided data which have been inverted using tomographic techniques to obtain the 3-D field of tropospheric water vapour content. This study presents methodological tests for retrieving GPS tropospheric observations from dense networks, with the aim of assessing the uncertainties of GPS retrievals. Using optimal tropospheric GPS retrieval methods, high resolution measurements of PWV on a local scale (a few kilometres) are discussed for rain events. Finally, the results of 3-D fields of water vapour densities from GPS tomography are analysed with respect to precipitation fields derived from a meteorological radar, showing a good correlation between precipitation and water vapour depletion areas. Clay mineralogy combined with bulk major and trace elements concentrations allow for the definition of four different end members: the Mosson drainage basin, the sandy barrier, the biogenic and the anthropic components. The two main sedimentary sources of the lagoonal system are the Mosson drainage basin which has a high concentration of smectite and Al2O3, and the sandy barrier characterized by high contents of illite, chlorite, SiO2 and Zr. Smectite/(illite + chlorite), SiO2/Al2O3 and Zr/Al2O3 ratios can be used to reconstruct the past storm history of the Pierre Blanche Lagoon. Our results indicate that the sensitivities of the clay mineralogy and geochemistry proxies are different. These sensitivities could be related: 1) first, to the comparison between different grain size for geochemistry and for clay mineralogy: 2) second, to the complexity of the mix (four end-members for the geochemistry and two end-members for the clay minerals): and 3) third, by the storm's ability to transport sediment of different sizes. ![]() | Changes in the catch composition of artisanal fisheries attributable to dolphin depredation in a Mediterranean marine reserve Auteur(s) : Rocklin, Delphine Santoni, Marie-catherine Culioli, Jean-michel Tomasini, Jean-antoine Pelletier, Dominique Mouillot, David Éditeur(s) : Oxford university press Résumé : There is increasing evidence from previous studies, and from fishers' observations, that coastal dolphins use fishing nets as an easily accessible feeding source, damaging or depredating fish caught in the nets. This study investigates the impact of dolphin depredation on artisanal trammelnets by analysing the catch composition of 614 artisanal fishing operations in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (France). Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) attacked, on average, 12.4% of the nets and damaged 8.3% of the catch. However, attacked nets were characterized by statistically significantly higher catch per unit effort than unattacked ones. Catch composition also differed significantly after dolphin attacks; bentho-pelagic fish were more represented and reef-associated fish less represented. Our results suggest that (i) dolphins are attracted by high fish densities in the fishing area and/or nets, and (ii) their attacks induce specific fish-avoidance behaviour, according to the fish position in the water column. Although dolphins depredate a small part of the catch, damage to nets, not yet assessed in this area, could weaken the benefits that reserves can provide to artisanal fisheries. ![]() | Synthèse de l'étude et des campagnes à la mer 2011 sur l'exploitation aux vire-lignes des espèces démersales profondes autour de La Réunion Auteur(s) : Fleury, Pierre-gildas Evano, Hugues Le Ru, Loic Aureche, Vincent Résumé : In an effort to implement new fishing activities for the small scale fisheries of Reunion Island, a prospecting cruise targeting deep demersal fish (200 to 600 m) was set up on the west coast of Reunion Island in 2000. This project was carried out by the Regional Fishery Committee and the French Institute for the Exploration of the Sea (Ifremer). Large commercial stocks were identified, and numerous professional or recreational fishermen started employing electric winches to exploit these deep resources.
However, the deep demersal species are a fragile resource due mainly to low growth rates and late sexual maturation. Due to the rapid increase in fishing pressure, Ifremer was asked to set up a new study and two scientific campaigns were carried out in 2011 (68 fishing trips being conducted with 559 dropline operations).
The first cruise was conducted at the same sites, using the same types of fishing gear and methods used in 2000. A marked drop of greater than 90% was observed in the catches of commercial species, together with a decrease of most fish sizes, attesting the overexploitation of these stocks. Only, catches of the small non-commercial shark (Squalus megalops) remained important (50% in number and weight of total catches).
The second cruise extended the prospection area to all waters surrounding Reunion Island . The overexploitation was confirmed in the west of Reunion Island, and in to a lesser degree in the north. Yields were better along the east and the south coasts. Concurrently, the efficiency of 2 hook sizes was compared : small hooks caught significantly more fish but of significantly smaller body sizes, resulting in comparable total weight of fish. We conclude that medium size hooks (i.e. type 7/0) have a significant selectivity on the fish size without loss in the global catch yield.
Various types of baits were also tested with the flesh of small local pelagic fish species (Selar crumenophtalmus and Decapterus macarellus) appearing to be the most efficient.
This study provides helpful indicators for the management of demersal fish stocks in Reunion island, which have been poorly surveyed and poorly regulated until now. However, the total fishing effort, especially from recreational fishermen, remains the most important factor to be quantified. ![]() | Shewanella profunda sp nov., isolated from deep marine sediment of the Nankai Trough Auteur(s) : Toffin, Laurent Bidault, Adeline Pignet, Patricia Tindall, Brian Slobodkin, Alexander Kato, Chiaki Prieur, Daniel Éditeur(s) : Society for General Microbiology Résumé : A novel piezotolerant, mesophilic, facultatively anaerobic, organotrophic, polarly flagellated bacterium (strain LT13a(T)) was isolated from a deep sediment layer in the Nankai Trough (Leg 190, Ocean Drilling Program) off the coast of Japan. This organism used a wide range of organic substrates as sole carbon and energy sources: pyruvate, glutamate, succinate, fumarate, lactate, citrate, peptone and tryptone. Oxygen, nitrate, fumarate, ferric iron and cystine were used as electron acceptors. Maximal growth rates were observed at a hydrostatic pressure of 10 MPa. Hydrostatic pressure for growth was in the range 0.1-50 MPa. Predominant cellular fatty acids were 16:1 omega7c, 15: 0 iso, 16: 0 and 13: 0 iso. The G + C content of the DNA was 44.9 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain LT13a(T) was shown to belong to the gamma-Proteobacteria, being closely related to Shewanella putrefaciens (98%), Shewanella oneidensis (97%) and Shewanella baltica (96 %). Levels of DNA homology between strain LT13a(T) and S. putrefaciens, S. oneidensis and S. baltica were < 20 %, indicating that strain LT13a(T) represents a novel species. Genetic evidence and phenotypic characteristics showed that isolate LT13a(T) constitutes a novel species of the genus Shewanella, Because of the deep origin of the strain, the name Shewanella profunda sp. nov. is proposed, with LT13a(T) (= DSM 15900(T)-JCM 12080(T)) as the type strain. ![]() | Typologie de la flottille chalutière du port de Sète par une méthode de segmentation Auteur(s) : Taquet, Marc Gaertner, Jean-claude Bertrand, Jacques Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : This work aims to define a typology of trawler f1eet in Sète, the main fishing harbour along the French Mediterranean coast, using several multivariate analysis methods. The fishing ships taken to account are represented by annual profiles of landing specific compositions. Five fishing strategies have been identified. A segmentation method using symbolic objects allows a formaI characterisation of the different strategies. These strategies are studied according to several general characteristics usually used for management rules elaboration (power, length, ship age). The typological analysis allows to characterise two main exploitation ways, one directed to the catch of a few species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus), the other characterised by the exploitation of a great diversity of species. By this way, it is possible to estimate how the catch of low represented species can significantly contribute to the exploitation of a resource.
