Multisensor observations of the Amazon-Orinoco river plume interactions with hurricanes Auteur(s) : Reul, Nicolas Quilfen, Yves Chapron, Bertrand Fournier, Severine Kudryavtsev, Vladimir Sabia, Roberto Éditeur(s) : Amer Geophysical Union Résumé : An analysis is presented for the spatial and intensity distributions of North Atlantic extreme atmospheric events crossing the buoyant Amazon-Orinoco freshwater plume. The sea surface cooling amplitude in the wake of an ensemble of storm tracks traveling in that region is estimated from satellite products for the period 1998-2012. For the most intense storms, cooling is systematically reduced by approximate to 50% over the plume area compared to surroundings open-ocean waters. Historical salinity and temperature observations from in situ profiles indicate that salt-driven vertical stratification, enhanced oceanic heat content, and barrier-layer presence within the plume waters are likely key oceanic factors to explain these results. Satellite SMOS surface salinity data combined with in situ observations are further used to detail the oceanic response to category 4 hurricane Igor in 2010. Argo and satellite measurements confirm the haline stratification impact on the cooling inhibition as the hurricane crossed the river plume. Over this region, the SSS mapping capability is further tested and demonstrated to monitor the horizontal distribution of the vertical stratification parameter. SMOS SSS data can thus be used to consistently anticipate the cooling inhibition in the wake of TCs traveling over the Amazon-Orinoco plume region. Evolution geochimique et exemple d'amenagement des mangroves au Senegal (Casamance) Auteur(s) : Marius, C Lucas, J Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The mangroves of Senegal are limited to the inlet of the Casamance - a river with very low discharge - and to the Sine-Saloum. The mineralogical and geochemical analysis of sediments (derived from 30 deep bore-holes) shows the thickness of the mangrove substrate, which overlies the continental terminal formation. Kaolinite and smectite account for over 90% of the clay fraction. The former is derived from the continental terminal whereas the latter is of marine origin. The chemical composition of the mangrove sediments is remarkably stable and clays play an overwhelming role in the preservation of organic matter and pyrite. Since 1968, a drought in Senegal has caused an important increase in the salinity levels of streams and water-tables; a considerable modification of vegetation zones in the Casamance, especially manifest in the extension of bare flats locally known as "tannes" at the expense of mangroves and marked changes in the morphology and geochemistry of mangrove soils. Compared to most mangrove areas in the humid tropics, mangroves in Senegal are characterized by a very fragile equilibrium. Reproduction in captivity and growth of Penaeus monodon, Fabricius in Polynesia Auteur(s) : Aquacop, Aquacop Éditeur(s) : 8 th Workshop of World Mariculture Society, Costa Rica, 10-13 janvier 1977 Résumé : To develop shrimp fanning in French Polynesia where no indigenous commercial species of penaeid prawn exists, the first step is to select the right species according to the following criteria: maturation and spawning in captivity, mass production of post-larvae, fast growth at semi-intensive density, acceptability of artificial diet, disease resistance and hardiness. This paper presents the results on P. monodon, Fabricius, the largest Indo-Pacific species. Experiments have been conducted in the "Centre Océanologique du Pacifique" in Tahiti Island where the environmental conditions are water temperature range 25-29 C, salinity 35 ppt, pH 8.2. A Red Shrimp, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817), Larvae Feeding Regime Based on Live Food Auteur(s) : Gaxiola, Gabriela Gallardo, Pedro Simoes, Nuno Cuzon, Gerard Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Publishing, Inc Résumé : Red shrimp, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis, larvae's response to different concentrations of live foods (diatoms Chaetoceros gracilis: 20-100 x 103 cells/mL; flagellate Tetraselmis chuii: 2-10 x 103 cells/mL and Artemia nauplii [NA]: 1-5 NA/mL) was investigated in three experiments. Experimental assessments were based on four variables: survival rate, weight gain, development index (DI), and resistance to salinity stress. A combination of C. gracilis 80 x 103 cells/mL, T. chuii 2 x 103 cells/mL, and Artemia 4 NA/mL provided the best experimental response. Specifically, F. brasiliensis larvae fed with the above-mentioned optimal concentrations of microalgae and Artemia grew faster and reached the postlarval stage in less time (168 h) than larvae in other feeding regimes evaluated. The effect of C. gracilis concentration on larval growth, survival, and the DI demonstrated that microalgae-based foods could be a highly productive alternative to more traditional aquaculture feeding regimes. Bundled turbidite deposition in the central Pandora Trough (Gulf of Papua) since Last Glacial Maximum: Linking sediment nature and accumulation to sea level fluctuations at millennial timescale Auteur(s) : Jorry, Stephan J. Droxler, Andre W. Mallarino, Gianni Dickens, Gerald R. Bentley, Sam J. Beaufort, Luc Peterson, Larry C. Opdyke, Bradley N. Éditeur(s) : Amer Geophysical Union Résumé : Since Last Glacial Maximum (23-19 ka), Earth climate warming and deglaciation occurred in two major steps (Bolling-Allerod and Preboreal), interrupted by a short cooling interval referred to as the Younger Dryas (12.5-11.5 ka B. P.). In this study, three cores (MV-33, MV-66, and MD-40) collected in the central part of Pandora Trough (Gulf of Papua) have been analyzed, and they reveal a detailed sedimentary pattern at millennial timescale. Siliciclastic turbidites disappeared during the Bolling-Allerod and Preboreal intervals to systematically reoccur during the Younger Dryas interval. Subsequent to the final disappearance of the siliciclastic turbidites a calciturbidite occurred during meltwater pulse 1B. The Holocene interval was characterized by a lack of siliciclastic turbidites, relatively high carbonate content, and fine bank-derived aragonitic sediment. The observed millennial timescale sedimentary variability can be explained by sea level fluctuations. During the Last Glacial Maximum, siliciclastic turbidites were numerous when the lowstand coastal system was located along the modern shelf edge. Although they did not occur during the intervals of maximum flooding of the shelf (during meltwater pulses 1A and 1B), siliciclastic turbidites reappear briefly during the Younger Dryas, an interval when sea level rise slowed, stopped, or perhaps even fell. The timing of the calciturbidite coincides with the first reflooding of Eastern Fields Reef, an atoll that remained exposed for most of the glacial stages. The influence of Congo River discharges in the surface and deep layers of the Gulf of Guinea Auteur(s) : Vangriesheim, Annick Pierre, C Aminot, Alain Metzl, N Baurand, F Caprais, Jean-claude Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The main feature of the Congo-Angola margin in the Gulf of Guinea is the Congo (ex-Zaire) deep-sea fan composed of a submarine canyon directly connected to the Congo River, a channel and a [sediment] lobe area. During the multi-disciplinary programme called BIOZAIRE conducted by Ifremer from 2000 to 2005, two CTD-O2 sections with discrete water column samples were performed (BIOZAIRE3 cruise: 2003-2004) to study the influence of the Congo River discharges, both in the surface layer and in the deep and near-bottom layers. The surface layer water is greatly diluted with river water that has a heavy particle load. The deep layer is affected by episodic turbidity currents that flow in the deep Congo channel and reach deep areas far from the coast. Previous studies revealed deep anomalies in oxygen (deficit) and nutrient (excess) concentrations at not, vert, similar4000 m depth and assumed that they resulted from mineralisation of the particulate organic matter from the Congo River. The BIOZAIRE3 sections were designed to explore these phenomena in more detail near the Congo channel. Oxygen and nutrients were measured as well as additional parameters, including stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon and pH. For the surface layer, the effect of the Congo River was studied with reference to salinity. Deviations from the theoretical dilution of various inorganic solutes suggested the occurrence of mineralisation and consumption processes. For the deep layer, the network of CTD-O2 stations gave a more detailed description of the deep anomalies than in previous studies. From the east-west section, anomalies appeared on the bottom at 4000 m depth and became slightly shallower when they spread to the west. They were also present north and south on the bottom along the 4000 m isobath. In these deep waters, the decrease in the o13C values of dissolved inorganic carbon confirmed that the mineralisation of organic matter plays a role in generating these anomalies. The location of the origin of this deep anomaly is debated. Here, arguments are given in favour of mineralisation of the particulate organic matter input that overflows from the Congo channel at not, vert, similar4000 m depth during turbidity current events. Other authors suggest that this input comes from downslope particle transport. Anomalies of the same origin, but weaker, also occurred deeper on the Congo lobe, where the Congo channel ends, but with a significant pH decrease on the bottom which was not seen at 4000 m depth. Organisation spatio-temporelle des peuplements ichtyologiques dans deux lagunes côtières : au Portugal et en Guadeloupe Auteur(s) : Aliaume, C Monteiro, C Louis, M Hoai, Tl Lasserre, G Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : Fish communities from two lagoon ecosystems, Ria Formosa (Portugal) and Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin (Guadeloupe), show interesting similarities of spatial and temporal organization. On the temporal scale, three community changes are observed in both systems, corresponding to massive arrivals and/or departures of migratory species. However, these migrations are more conspicuous in the Ria Formosa than in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. On a spatial scale, the community structure is also largely determined by migratory species, whose abundance is a factor of homogenization. This is clearly observed in Ria Formosa, where the lagoon selection applies on a regional scale. Conversely, the community of sedentary fish identifies remarkable stations affected by chronic aggressions such as tourism or pollution. An explicative analysis, comprising a discriminant analysis and multiple regressions was realized on the data collected in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. This analysis made it possible to determine the important environmental descriptors in the two complementary processes involved in recruitment: migrant availability, which determines the temporal organization of the fish assemblage. These migrations are explained by water temperature and salinity, two descriptors controlled by climatic conditions; the settlement process, which determines the spatial organization of the fish assemblage. This is explained by habitat descriptors such as visibility and turtlegrass blade length, or trophic descriptors, such as primary production, zooplankton density or nitrate concentration. Assessment from space of mangroves evolution in the Mekong Delta, in relation to extensive shrimp farming Auteur(s) : Tong, P. H. S Auda, Y Populus, Jacques Aizpuru, M Al Habshi, A. Al Blasco, F Éditeur(s) : Taylor & Francis Résumé : This study is an attempt to produce an assessment of the impact of shrimp aquaculture in the Mekong Delta (Viet Nam) on mangrove ecosystems. For this exercise we selected two sub-areas (Ca Mau and Tra Vinh provinces) encompassing a variety of land uses and ecological conditions. Twenty stations in Tra Vinh and 15 stations in Ca Mau have been surveyed several times from September 2000 to March 2002. Field investigations included mangrove soils studies, measurements of pH and salinity of the water, analysis of mangrove flora, and density and structure of the vegetation. Four Systeme Probatoire de l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) scenes were used for the discrimination of mangrove types and for the delineation of landscape units. For the first time, five ecologically distinct landscape classes were identified and delineated. Their possible links with the farming and yields of high valued species of shrimps, especially the giant tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) destined for export markets, need further studies. Since 1965, about 30% of mangrove ecosystems have been lost in Ca Mau Province and more than 30% of present mangroves are replanted monospecific stands. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study which demonstrates that, in spite of deep and ancient man interactions in the Mekong Delta, five ecologically distinct classes of land use can be defined. Satellite surveys confirm a clear distribution of landscape units with possible links with shrimp aquaculture potentialities. Caractéristiques des Artemia d’origine russe Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Résumé : New Artemia strain from Russia are now available on the market. They have been evaluated by comparison with Artemia from Great Salt Lake which are routinely used at the LAC hatchery,. Five criteria were compared and all of them were in favour of the American strain with 191 833 nauplii per gram while the Russian ones only gave 102 667 nii per gram. Another important criteria when using Artemia was hatching time which turned out to be longer for the Russian. Etat des connaissances Auteur(s) : Della Patrona, Luc Brun, Pierre Herbland, Alain Résumé : Shrimp culture in New Caledonia has developed according to the "intensified" semi-intensive model which uses ponds that stretch over several hectares. Local shrimp farms are for the most part installed in "tannes", barren, highly saline areas of the back mangrove forest. These areas generally have impermeable silty clay soils that have biogeochemical features particularly appropriate for benthic life and are often immersed by tides. During the six months of the grow-out phase, the "pond ecosystem" undergoes an increase in potential, progressing from an initial state of "natural lagoon" to a "grow-out pond" that is highly enriched with degrading organic matter.... Hydrogen-peroxide determination in estuarine and marine waters by flow-injection with fluorescence detection Auteur(s) : Amouroux, D Donard, Ofx Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The Scopoletin-Peroxidase fluorescence decay method has been developed using standard additions and a flow injection manifold for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) determination in marine waters. The limit of detection of the method was optimized using stored milli-Q water with a minimum of 5 nM (3 sigma). The method was found to be linear from 5 to 700 nM, with an approximate relative standard deviation of 10%. This accuracy was verified on both milli-Q and natural waters running systematically duplicate analysis. The validity and the sensitivity of the technique was studied through the influence of pH, salinity and the dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration. Standard additions avoided all matrix and experimental interferences, making it possible to use this method under any field conditions and on ''humic-rich'' waters. Additionally, the flow injection manifold improved the accuracy and the runtime of the analytical procedure and simplified the field manipulation. Synthèse hydrobiologique du site électronucléaire de Flamanville Auteur(s) : Dreves, Luc Lampert, Luis Abernot, Chantal Martin, Jocelyne Arzel, Pierre Dumas, Franck Latrouite, Daniel Schlaich, Ivan Résumé : This synthesis report assesses the current state of the marine hydrobiological knowledge acquired in the surroundings of the Flamanville electronuclear site (north-west of Cotentin), in the framework of the various project and monitoring programs in the pelagic, benthic and halieutic domains carried out on this site since 1976. Each domain is divided, as much as necessary, into different study areas such as hydrobiology, phytoplankton, microbiology, crustacean larvae or macrophyte algae. For each area, a series of parameters, considered as representative of the evolution of this area, is studied. In this way, for the hydrological area, the sea water temperature and salinity, the mineral nutriment concentrations, the holagen compounds and the boron are monitored. The evolution of each of these parameters enabled us to draw the following conclusions. The vegetal and animal species' physiology is conditioned by climate changes. The study of the pluviometry and air temperature parameters shows that the 1986/2005 period is slightly less humid and warmer than the 1949/2005 period. This reflects also on the sea water temperature whose average values increase on a regular basis. Eddy contributions to the meridional transport of salt in the North Atlantic Auteur(s) : Treguier, Anne-marie Deshayes, Julie Lique, Camille Dussin, Raphael Molines, Jean-marc Éditeur(s) : Amer Geophysical Union Résumé : The meridional transport of salt in the Atlantic ocean is an important process for climate, controlling the stability of the meridional overturning circulation. The contribution of transient eddies to this transport is quantified in an eddy resolving North Atlantic model at 1/12 degrees resolution (NATL12), and compared with lower resolution North-Atlantic and global 1/4 degrees models. In NATL12 between 10 degrees N and 40 degrees N, there is a volume loss by evaporation of 0.6 Sverdrups (Sv). The divergence of the eddy flux of salt (normalized by a reference salinity of 34.8) is 0.2 Sv over the region, a significant fraction of the total air-seawater exchange, but it is compensated by an opposite convergent transport of salt by the mean flow, so that the total transport of salt is small. The compensation between eddy and mean salt transport is almost complete in a multicentury long global model experiment, but less effective in NATL12 because the short integration time does not allow the salt content to equilibrate and the model drift is large. Eddies arising from baroclinic instability contribute to the meridional salt transports at the northern and southern boundary of the subtropical gyre, where they appear consistent with a lateral diffusion acting on the mean salinity gradient. However, the eddy transport of salt is the sum of two terms: an advective contribution (arising from the correlations of velocity and isopycnal thicknesses) and a diffusion along isopycnals. Both components have the same amplitude at the southern boundary of the subtropical gyre, while diffusion is dominant at the northern boundary. Crustaces profonds captures aux casiers aux Antilles françaises - 1996 Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Résumé : For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations carried out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks are not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura and to the orders Isopoda and Amphipoda. It is intended for fishermen and other socio-professionals of the fishing industry. It should enable them to identify and name these previously unexploited varieties of Crustacea to facilitate their sale in local markets. Concentrations and fractionation of carbon, iron, sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus in mangrove sediments along an intertidal gradient (semi-arid climate, New Caledonia) Auteur(s) : Deborde, Jonathan Marchand, Cyril Molnar, Nathalie Della Patrona, Luc Meziane, Tarik Éditeur(s) : MDPI AG Résumé : In mangrove ecosystems, strong reciprocal interactions exist between plant and substrate. Under semi-arid climate, Rhizophora spp. are usually predominant, colonizing the seashore, and Avicennia marina develops at the edge of salt-flats, which is the highest zone in the intertidal range. Along this zonation, distribution and speciation of C, Fe, S, N, and P in sediments and pore-waters were investigated. From the land-side to the sea-side of the mangrove, sediments were characterized by I/ increase in: (i) water content; (ii) TOC; (iii) mangrove-derived OM; II/ and decrease in: (i) salinity; (ii) redox; (iii) pH; (iv) solid Fe and solid P. Beneath Avicennia and Rhizophora, TS accumulated at depth, probably as a result of reduction of iron oxides and sulfate. The loss of total Fe observed towards the sea-side may be related to sulfur oxidation and to more intense tidal flushing of dissolved components. Except the organic forms, dissolved N and P concentrations were very low beneath Avicennia and Rhizophora stands, probably as a result of their uptake by the root systems. However, in the unvegetated salt-flat, NH4+ can accumulate in organic rich and anoxic layers. This study shows: (i) the evolution of mangrove sediment biogeochemistry along the intertidal zone as a result of the different duration of tidal inundation and organic enrichment; and (ii) the strong links between the distribution and speciation of the different elements.
