Until the end of the 20th century, heritage was mainly defined in the Caribbean, as in the entire world, by an european conception (linked with the formation of national identities), founded on the value of tangible heritage (rare, ancient objects, monuments and materials) as an historic proof of the value of cultures and peoples. Poets in the Caribbean hardly criticize this evidence that contributed to inferiorized people. Memory and imagination played a central role in the building of a Caribbean cultural identity. Poets tried to show how the common could rise from different patterns, diversity instead of unity, creation instead of fixity. Nevertheless, In the 21st century, frameworks are not available to deal with Caribbean heritage in its diversity (monuments, material, natural and intangible...) and complexity whereas it constitute a challenge for a sustainable society and can play a fundamental role in education as in tourism.
Jusqu'à la fin du XXe siècle, le patrimoine dans la Caraïbe comme ailleurs dans le monde, répondait principalement à une conception européenne (liée à la formation des identités nationales) fondée sur la valeur positive du patrimoine matériel comme preuve historique de la valeur des cultures et des peuples. Les poètes caribéens ont déconstruit ce cadre, instrument de l'infériorisation des individus. La mémoire et l'imagination ont joué un rôle central dans la construction d'une identité culturelle caribéenne. Ils ont tenté de montrer que le commun pouvait émerger de modèles différents, opposant à l'unique, le divers et à la fixité, la création. Cependant, au XXIe siècle, la Caraïbe ne dispose pas d'un cadre pour traiter son patrimoine dans sa diversité (patrimoine matériel, immatériel, naturel) et sa complexité alors que le patrimoine constitue un défi pour le développement durable des sociétés et peut jouer un rôle fondamental dans l'éducation et le tourisme.

Résumé : After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance. The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis )) was initiated in 1994, with the aim to study the sustainability of marine shrimp aquaculture in tropical areas, main! y Indonesia and Vietnam, through the following tasks: (i) improve site selection and study the impact of aquaculture on marine environments presenting a variable sensitivity to organic sewage, (ii) analyse the socio-economical aspects and profitability of the aquaculture industry and of common resources (iii) use remote sensing and geographical data bases for diagnosis and monitoring of site degradation (iv) reinforce the capacity of Asian scientists through training. Severa! aquaculture sites have been investigated in the Lampung region (South Sumatra, Indonesia), the Mekong delta (Vietnam) and on the West coast of New-Caledonia, providing a large range of typical ecosystems encountered in Asia and in the Pacifie, from coralline sites to coastal plains with mangrove and deltaic areas. The study concerned the spatial structure and seasonal influence of these ecosystems, the temporal variation during the course of the project (3 years) and the relation between the ecological structure and farm productions. Remote sensing provides a synoptic vision over large land expanses. Severa! scenes were processed for landuse mapping using conventional classification techniques. Concerning water quality assessment, a general relation for the Java sea was found between image and field data in terms of total suspended matter. Applying this relation to a new site in Sumatra has provided an initial approach to water type and, together with land use mapping, a preliminary assessment of the suitability of the area to shrimp aquaculture development. Socio-economic research has been focused on the identification ofneeds for collective action, including public policy, in the perspective of shrimp farming sustainability. The main concern is in the regulation of shrimp farming intensification and extensification at the scale of coastal ecosystemic entities in a common property resource management perspective. The common considered here is coastal water quality. Comparing the local development profiles and the institutional grounds for the design and implementation of collective management rules shows that variables such as land tenure system, farm owner socio-economic profile, social homogeneity or heterogeneity of the farmers are key factors to analyse the potential for sustainability. The defmition of water quality and the possible means to ensure its collective management are discussed. The main conclusion is that the economie incentives to farming development are strong but there is no significant difference among traditional, semi-intensive and intensive systems in terms of economie efficiency or wealth distribution. The description of the functioning of the different kinds of ecosystems make it possible to give an advice concerning the positioning of the activity inside the ecosystem, and furthermore to have a reference state in order to determine the impact of the activity on the coastal environnement. This impact can be summarized as an increase in the concentration of total suspended matt€?r, of particulate organic matter and of sulfate reducing bacterias. This organic ma~.er is either issued from rearing activities or from telluric origine, due to mangrove eradication when building the ponds. An evaluation of the relationship existing between productivity and characteristics of each ecosystem bas been conducted by correlating ecological indicators data (concentration of total suspended matter, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, percentage of pheopigments in total pigments and cyanobacteria and sulfatereducing bacteria in water and sediments) with the average production of the farms. This comparison lead to the compilation of a scale of observed production integrating the range of these environmental parameters with shrimp production levels, bound to facilitate the positioning of shrimp farming in relation with the confmement leve! of each ecosystem. Lastly, ali geographie data originated from the various compartments of the study have been geo-referenced and loaded into a geographical information system. This allows to display any query made on spatial variables and their related statistical data, including the ir variations over the last few years and to reveal patterns and phenomena otherwise not obvious.
Le programme mis en oeuvre par la DRV (Paris, CREMA-L'Houmeau, DELIAO Brest, COP Tahiti, GIE/RA Nouvelle Calédonie), dans le cadre d'un projet européen STD3 «(Sciences et Technique au Service du Développement», en collaboration avec l'Université de Montpellier II, l'Ecole Nationale d'Agronomie de Rennes, l'ITC (Hollande), l'Institut Océanographique de Nha Trang (Vietnam), le BADC de Jepara et le BPPT de Jakarta (Indonésie), avait pour but la mise au point de méthodes permettant d'améliorer la sélection des sites ainsi que le suivi du développement et de l'impact de l'aquaculture des crevettes Péneides en milieu tropical pour éviter la surexploitation. Quatre axes de recherche ont été défmis : a) identifier la nature et quantifier les rejets de déchets issus de ce type d'aquaculture, b) définir les caractéristiques écologiques des écosystèmes susceptibles d'accueillir l'activité aquacole et suivre leur évolution sous l'influence des rejets, c) déterminer l'influence de la gestion des fermes et des ressources (aspects économiques) sur les performances de productivité, d) déterminer la capacité de la télédétection comme outil de diagnostic d'impact à l'échelle de la région, e) mener un programme de formation d'étudiants et jeunes chercheurs Vietnamiens et Indonésiens.

Résumé : The Gold Coast in Australia is one of these coastal places, which developed through taking advantage of its environmental assets, such as direct access to the sea, a white sandy shoreline, an extensive and naturally protected broadwater and several large accessible rivers. While many other coastal cities relied on port facilities to develop commercial and naval activities, the City of Gold Coast emerged and grew as a tourism destination. Largely because of this phenomenon, the pattern of settlement and subsequent development of the city differs from most traditional Australian settlement and development patterns. Today, the Gold Coast is one of the most famous tourist cities in Australia and it accommodates more than ten million visitors annually.In the wider Australian context, 85% of the population lives within 50 km of the beach, evidencing popular lifestyle cultural preferences of many Australians. Given this preoccupation with the coast, one may expect that Australia would be at the forefront of coastal tourism developments and coastal protection. There is, however, no overriding jurisdiction covering planning law enforcement in maritime areas and, this situation has led to many social and environmental conflicts. The City of Gold Coast is a case in point and no more so than currently (2017) with proposals to build a cruise terminal or/and a casino, and high rise residential towers on its protected coastal strip (the Spit).This paper demonstrates how the evolution and resolution of development conflicts on the Spit (Gold Coast) are symptomatic of the evolution of place values and the national coastal management and how, this informs a shift towards coastal protection.
La ville côtière de Gold Coast, en Australie, s’est développée grâce à un environnement naturel exceptionnel, qui comprend un accès direct à la mer, un littoral de sable blanc, une large baie naturellement protégée et plusieurs rivières. Si la plupart des autres villes du littoral australien se sont appuyées sur leur port pour développer leurs activités commerciales et navales, la ville de Gold Coast est, depuis ses débuts, une ville touristique. De ce fait, son mode et ses formes de développement se différencient de ceux que l’on rencontre traditionnellement dans les autres villes. Aujourd’hui la ville de Gold Coast est l’une des principales destinations touristiques australiennes et accueille plus de dix millions de visiteurs par an.En Australie, 85% de la population habite dans un rayon de 50km de la plage, avec les préférences de style de vie qui y sont associées. Vu cette attraction pour le littoral, on pourrait présumer que l’Australie soit à l’avant-garde des développements touristiques et de la protection de son littoral. Cependant, du point de vue national, comme, historiquement, il n’y a eu qu’une faible jurdiction concernant l’aménagement et la protection des zones maritimes et du littoral, de nombreux conflits sociaux et environmentaux ont vu le jour. La ville de Gold Coast concentre malheureusement nombre de ces conflits ; le dernier en date concernant le projet de construction d’un terminal de bateaux de croisière et/ou d’un casino avec quelques tours residentielles sur une langue de terre protégée (le Spit).L’objectif de cet article est de montrer comment l’évolution et la résolution des conflits sur le Spit de Gold Coast, tous liés à des projets de développements touristiques, reflètent non seulement l’évolution de la valeur d’un lieu et l’approche nationale du développement du littoral, mais aussi le changement vers une meilleure protection du littoral.

This paper discusses and analyses the productivity of solar home systems in isolated areas in French Guiana, a region characterized by specific human and environmental conditions.Its aim is a better understanding of the attitudes, expectations, and relationship of the users towards the solar home system. The data collected made it possible to make suggestions for adapting the photovoltaic systems to their environment by taking into account social, cultural, and geoclimatic specificities. Analysis of on-site productivity provides valuable information on energy profiles and types of use. Field surveys made it possible to associate users’ perception of the energy production equipment and their degree of satisfaction with operating efficiency and on-site maintenance. This aspect is essential for analyzing the actual rate of use of the energy that is theoretically available.Parallel to these surveys, the results of the study carried out on the performance of the solar home systems made it possible to learn the quantitative aspects of the energy produced and consumed as well as the qualitative aspects of the parameters that condition the performance of the photovoltaic systems.After keyboarding, the subjective, qualitative as well as the quantitative variables were processed using a statistical analysis program in order to determine the correlations between them and to prepare the final conclusions.

Résumé : Cette thèse concerne la modélisation des dynamiques de maladies foliaires de cultures pérennes tropicales à différentes échelles spatiales. Cette approche de modélisation est appliquée à la cercosporiose noire du bananier. Il s’agit d’explorer et de déterminer les paramètres environnementaux et de résistance de l’hôte ayant une influence significative sur la dynamique spatiotemporelle de la maladie et d’apporter des éléments associés au contrôle de la cercosporiose noire.Deux modèles ont été développés dans le cadre de cette thèse. La dynamique épidémiologique au niveau de la plante est décrite par un modèle mécaniste décomposé en un modèle de croissance de la plante et un module épidémiologique décrivant le cycle épidémique du pathogène. L’architecture du bananier est prise en compte par le biais de compartiments foliaires positionnés dans l’espace. Le modèle a été validé par un jeu de données indépendant. Les expérimentations numériques et l’analyse de sensibilité du modèle réalisées par les méthodes de Morris et de e-FAST ont permis de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement épidémique de cette maladie et d’identifier les paramètres influant le plus la dynamique épidémique en particulier la vitesse d’extension des lésions, la durée d’incubation et l’efficacité d’infection .L’approche bayésienne a permis de prendre en compte l’information a priori disponible pour ces trois paramètres sur lesquels a porté l’inférence statistique. L’analyse de sensibilité du modèle a également permis d’identifier l’influence de deux paramètres liés à la croissance de la plante : le nombre de feuilles sur une plante et le rythme d’émission foliaire Un modèle de dynamique spatio-temporelle de la cercosporiose noire a été développé à l’échelle d’un territoire à partir d’enquêtes effectuées enMartinique pendant la période d’invasion de cette maladie de septembre 2010 à mai 2012. Les données récoltées étant censurées, l’inférence des paramètres du modèle a été réalisée dans un cadre bayésien en utilisant un algorithme d’augmentation de données. Le modèle et l’inférence développés permettent de reconstruire la dynamique spatio-temporelle de l’invasion et de prédire la fin d’invasion sur le territoire.Les deux modèles de dynamiques spatio-temporelles développés à deux échelles spatiales différentes ont permis d’acquérir des informations importantes pour construire des outils de conception de méthode de contrôle de la cercosporiose noire des bananiers.
This thesis concerns the modeling of the dynamics of foliar diseases of tropical tree crops at different spatial scales. This modeling approach is applied to black Sigatoka of banana. It is to explore and determine the environmental parameters and host resistance has a significant influence on the spatiotemporal dynamics of the disease and to provide elements associated with the control of Sigatoka noire.Deux models were developed as part of this thesis. The epidemiological dynamics at the plant is described by a mechanistic model decomposed into a growth model of the plant and an epidemiological unit describing the pathogen epidemic cycle. The architecture of the banana is taken into account through foliar compartments positioned in space. The model was validated by an independent data set. Numerical experiments and model sensitivity analysis performed by the methods of Morris and e-FAST enabled to better understand the functioning of this epidemic disease and identify the parameters affecting the most dynamic epidemic especially speed extension of the lesions, the incubation period and efficiency of Bayesian .L'approche infection allowed to take into account prior information available for these three parameters that were the statistical inference. The model sensitivity analysis also identified the influence of two parameters related to plant growth: the number of leaves on a plant and rate of leaf emission A dynamic model of space-time Black Sigatoka has been developed at the scale of a territory from surveys enMartinique during the period of invasion of the disease from September 2010 to May 2012. The data collected being censored, inference of model parameters has was performed in a Bayesian framework, using a data augmentation algorithm. The model developed and inference possible to reconstruct the spatiotemporal dynamics of the invasion and predict the end of the invasion territoire.Les two spatio-temporal dynamics models developed at two different spatial scales has been gained important information for build tools design method of control of black Sigatoka of banana.

Résumé : SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic conditions in New Caledonia from 1990 to 1995 (drought) and their potential impact on the production. The development of this very particular process of physical and topographic differential evolution of the pond bottom under wind action (accumulation and digging) and its consequences on pond preparation is explained. This work takes a close look at the grow-out management : age and quality of post larvae, pond stocking with pre-grown animals, feed characteristics and management, water exchange management and pumping capacity, strategy on density and size of harvested animals. The results have been assessed using a distinctive tool, the "survival differential", allowing inter-pond comparisons within a site, inter-farms comparisons over pluri-annual periods of time. >From the commented farm results over a 20 year period, we could distinguish the principal factors responsible for the drop of grow-out capacity of some ponds. We have outlined a conceptual description of the different parameters leading to the decrease of survival, an epidemiological scenario and a synoptic table of the history of events and their relative severity. The study draws the hypothesis of a cumulative effect of positive factors, which could have led back to satisfying production results: a physical and biochemical restoration of pond bottoms, a modified and standardized grow-out management, an appropriate pumping capacity and the come back of adequate climatic conditions. This case study illustrates the concept of « flexibility » of the farming capacity and the sustainability of prawn farming in New Caledonia. The clear objective of this 20 year historic investigation was to get relevant information, in order to improve the understanding on the "summer syndrome" which hits two farms at the moment, and to participate in the hypothesis under study by the DAC (2005). We also tried to make the new farmers aware of the fragility of the pond ecosystem, and give some common-sense advices in the hope that such problems will not happen again in other places.
La ferme de SODACAL, conçue à l'origine comme une ferme de démonstration pour le développement d'une filière d'aquaculture exportatrice de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie a connu une phase de croissance exponentielle de sa production de 1984 à 1992 (jusqu'à 400 t/an), puis une chute brutale en 1993 (250 t/an) qui s'est prolongée jusqu'en 1997 et enfin une reprise à partir de 1998 pour arriver à une stabilisation autour de 420 t/an depuis 1999. L'étude inventorie les dysfonctionnements observés avant et pendant la crise de production. Parmi ceux-ci sont évoqués les épisodes de mortalité de crevettes, d'autres désordres biologiques (décollements de tapis benthique et « hécatombes » de crabes et de poissons), l'état délétère des fonds (sédiments réduits et odeur d'hydrogène sulfuré). Elle permet notamment de montrer que des épisodes de mortalité typiques du Syndrome 93 pouvaient être observés sur cette ferme dès 1990. L'étude met en évidence les conditions climatiques remarquables qui ont sévi en Nouvelle-Calédonie de 1990 à 1995 (sécheresse) et leur impact probable sur les élevages. La genèse du phénomène très particulier d'évolution physique et topographique des fonds des bassins par l'effet du vent (accumulation et creusement) et des conséquences sur la préparation des bassins est explicitée. Ce travail aborde la gestion zootechnique : l'âge et la « qualité » des post larves, la pratique des ensemencements à partir d'animaux pré grossis, la gestion de l'alimentation et la nature de la provende, le contrôle du renouvellement d'eau et la capacité de pompage, le choix des densités et du calibre des animaux récoltés. Les résultats ont pu être évalués à travers un outil original «le différentiel de survie », permettant des comparaisons inter-bassins au sein du site, inter-fermes à des périodes pluri annuelles distinctes. A partir des résultats commentés de la ferme obtenus sur 20 années, on a pu distinguer les principaux facteurs qui ont provoqué cette chute d'aptitude culturale de certains bassins. Un schéma conceptuel des différents paramètres ayant conduit à la baisse des survies, un scénario épidémiologique ainsi qu'un tableau synoptique de la chronologie des évènements et de leur relative sévérité sont esquissés. Le rapport ébauche l'hypothèse d'un cumul de causes favorables qui ont permis le retour à des résultats zootechniques satisfaisants : une réhabilitation physique et biochimique des fonds de bassins, une zootechnie modifiée et standardisée, une capacité de pompage adéquate et une climatologie de nouveau favorable. Cette étude de cas permet ainsi d'illustrer les notions d « élasticité » de l'aptitude culturale et de durabilité de la crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Le but de cette enquête historique sur 20 ans est l'acquisition d'informations pertinentes permettant d'améliorer la compréhension du « Syndrome d'été » qui affecte actuellement deux fermes de production et ainsi aider à compléter le scénario hypothétique avancé par le Dac (2005). Enfin, au travers de cet historique, on a cherché également à sensibiliser les nouveaux opérateurs de la filière sur la fragilité de l'écosystème-bassin et présenter quelques conseils de bon sens pour éviter que de tels phénomènes ne se reproduisent ailleurs.

Résumé : Les mutations continues de l’environnement culturel des habitants de Guyane favorisent une prise de conscience des attentes des populations locales et de leur demande sociale en matière de lecture publique. Cela devrait à terme susciter l’émergence d’un public « avisé » malgré l’influence de la tradition orale. Par conséquent, face à la complexité du terrain sociologique, il est nécessaire de modifier les stratégies des acteurs et de les adapter aux réalités sociales et à la vie quotidienne des populations concernées. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, sur quelles représentations sociales peuvent reposer les interventions des acteurs ? Cette question trouvera sa réponse dans une perception objective de la réalité sociale des populations locales.
The ongoing evolutions of the cultural environment of Guianese people promote awareness of the expectations of local people and their social demand for public reading. This should eventually lead to the emergence of a public informed despite the influence of oral tradition. Therefore, given the complexity of the sociological field, it is necessary to change the players' strategies and adapt to social realities and daily lives of the people concerned. What social representations should the performances of actors be based on in order to reach these objectives? The answer to that question will be found thanks to an objective look at the social reality of the local populations.

Located in the heart of the Maritimes in Southeast New Brunswick, Moncton has the highest concentration of Acadians in any urban setting in Canada. Over the years, Acadians have increasingly become part of the New Brunswick society. They have greatly contributed to Moncton's development through the creation of genuine Acadian institutions in the educational and financial sectors, which, as a result, have modified the spatio-linguistic configuration and the cultural identity of the place. This new reality has been the object of a series of spatiotemporal analyses using the Geographic Information System (GIS); they show that the dynamics of the Francophone and Anglophone populations in the agglomeration's different sectors lead to the creation of some isolated linguistic groupings. And that unlike the situation in other regions of New Brunswick, the assimilation process of the French-speaking Acadians into the Anglophone majority has slowed down in the Greater Moncton over the course of thelast few years. These transformations point out to the crucial role of the Universite de Moncton as an educational, cultural and even political nexus for the Acadians in the Greater Moncton, as well as in the Maritime provinces in general.
Située au cœur des Maritimes, dans le sud-est du Nouveau-Brunswick, l'agglomération du Grand Moncton est la région urbaine canadienne qui présente la plus forte concentration d'Acadiens français. Au fil des années, ces derniers furent plus présents dans la société néo-brunswickoise contribuant grandement au développement de Moncton à travers la création d'institutions acadiennes dans le domaine de l'éducation et des services financiers. Les transformations dues à l'émergence d'une influence acadienne modifient la configuration géographique et l'identité culturelle de l'espace en question. Cette réalité apparente fait l'objet d'une série d'analyses spatio-temporelles à l'aide des Systèmes d'Information Géographique (SIG); ces analyses montrent d'abord que la dynamique des populations francophone et anglophone a tendance à créer certains îlots linguistiques tandis que ralentit le processus généralisé d'assimilation des Acadiens à la majorité anglophone dans l'agglomération du Grand Moncton. Ces transformations mettent en évidence le rôle de l'Université de Moncton comme centre d'attraction éducationnel, culturel et même politique pour les Acadiens de Moncton en particulier et des Provinces maritimes en général.

Résumé : L'agriculture actuelle est impliquée dans de multiples problématiques environnementales, sociales et économiques, aux échelles locales et globales. En agronomie, de nombreux travaux à l'échelle du champ et de l'exploitation visent aujourd'hui à concevoir des systèmes de culture et des systèmes de production en lien avec ces problématiques. En revanche, peu de travaux portent sur la conception et l'évaluation de systèmes agricoles à l'échelle du territoire, alors que cette échelle apparaît pourtant incontournable pour faire face à des enjeux de développement durable. Pour combler ce manque, nous proposons un ensemble méthodologique permettant i) de simuler les conséquences de scénarios de politiques agricoles sur les choix d'assolement des agriculteurs, décrits individuellement, en modélisant l'évolution de leurs système de production et ii) d'évaluer l'impact de ces changements d'assolements à l'échelle du territoire, à l'aide d'indicateurs qui apportent de l'information spatiale sur la contribution de l'agriculture au développement durable. L'ensemble méthodologique proposé débute par la construction d'une typologie des exploitations agricoles du territoire sur la base de la similarité de leur assolement. Parallèlement, l'adaptation d'indicateurs à l'échelle du territoire permet d'évaluer les impacts des externalités des systèmes de culture en mobilisant des procédures de changements d'échelles. Un modèle bioéconomique générique, multi-échelle, spatialement explicite, appelé MOSAICA, qui utilise la typologie et les indicateurs d'impact de l'agriculture à l'échelle régionale, est créé pour produire des mosaïques de systèmes de culture et évalue leur contribution au développement durable du territoire. Ce modèle, couplé à un itinéraire de définition de scénarios exploratoires et normatifs permet de tester l'impact de différents types de leviers agronomiques, socio-économiques, environnementaux, organisationnels et techniques sur les choix des exploitants et in fine sur la contribution de la mosaïque de systèmes de culture au développement durable du territoire. Nous avons appliqué cet ensemble méthodologique à la conception de scénarios de développement agricoles durables en Guadeloupe. Nous avons dans un premier temps développé une typologie des systèmes de production comprenant huit types distincts et relevant de processus décisionnel différents. Puis nous avons adapté à l'échelle du territoire 19 indicateurs pour l'évaluation des mosaïques de systèmes de culture. L’évaluation de la mosaïque actuelle nous a permis de repérer de faibles niveaux de contribution aux enjeux d’autonomie alimentaire et énergétique. Différents scénarios normatifs et exploratoires intégrant des leviers de changement de la mosaïque ont été testés avec MOSAICA. Les évaluations réalisées nous ont permis d'identifier que des leviers agronomiques comme le développement du maraîchage sans intrants chimiques et des leviers sociaux comme la formation de main-d'oeuvre supplémentaire permettraient d'améliorer la contribution de l’agriculture au développement durable du territoire Guadeloupéen. La modélisation mécaniste de l’évolution du territoire agricole permet d'intégrer des connaissances sur la localisation, les performances, les impacts des systèmes de culture et sur les processus décisionnels des exploitants régissant l’orientation productive et le fonctionnement des exploitations. Cette démarche permet de visualiser les changements de système de culture et leurs impacts de manière spatialement explicite, ce qui permet de générer des connaissances sur les leviers susceptibles de faire évoluer positivement l'agriculture du territoire. La démarche et les outils mis en oeuvre sont donc particulièrement utiles pour l'aide à la décision publique pour améliorer la durabilité de l'agriculture dans son ensemble.
Current agricultural systems are responsible for many different environmental, social and economic issues at both local and global scales. Agricultural sciences have contributed to the design of several methods at the farm and field scale in order to prototype cropping systems and farming systems to address these issues. However, few methods have been designed at the regional scale, while this scale seems to be essential in order to address these issues. In order to fill this gap, we here propose a new methodological framework for i) simulating the consequences of policy changes on farmer's cropping plan, described individually, by modeling the evolution of farming systems and to ii) assess the impacts of cropping system changes at the regional scale, with a set of indicators that generate spatially explicit information on the contribution of agriculture to sustainable development. The methodological framework starts with the design of a farm typology over the territory based on the similarity of farmer's crop acreages. In parallel, a set of indicators is adapted to the landscape scale in order to assess the impacts of cropping system externalities by integrating a set of scale change procedures. A generic, multi-scale, spatially explicit bioeconomic model called MOSAICA, which uses the farm typology and the indicators, is created for generating cropping system mosaics and assessing their contribution to sustainable development. This model coupled to a scenario approach composed of exploratory and normative scenarios can simulate the impact of several types of agronomic, socio-economic, environmental, organizational and technical levers of change on the farmer's choices in terms of cropping systems and in fine the impacts of new cropping system mosaics on the contribution to sustainable development of territories. We applied this methodological framework for building scenarios of sustainable agricultural development in Guadeloupe. We first developed a typology of farming systems encompassing eight types of farming systems that revealed several different farmer's decision processes. Then, we developed 19 indicators to assess cropping system mosaics. The assessment of the current cropping system mosaic showed low levels of response of the current mosaic to economic and social issues especially the food and energy self-sufficiency. Different normative and exploratory scenarios integrating levers of change have been simulated with MOSAICA. The assessment of cropping system mosaics from these scenarios highlighted the positive effect of agronomic levers of change such as organic crop-gardening and social levers such as the vocational training of supplementary workforce for improving the contribution of agriculture to sustainable development of the guadeloupean territory. The mechanistic modeling of the agricultural territory allows us to integrate a wide range of knowledge on the location of cropping systems, their levels of performance , their impacts and the decision process of farmer's that drive the farming system characteristics and the farm functioning. This methodological framework helps visualize the cropping system changes at the regional scale and their associated impacts at the landscape scale which is helpful in order to produce knowledge on the levers of change that can improve the response of local agriculture to local and global issues. The framework and tools designed are particularly useful for decision-aid on the future levels of contribution of agriculture to sustainable development.

BACKGROUND: In a malaria-endemic area the distribution of patients is neither constant in time nor homogeneous in space. The WHO recommends the stratification of malaria risk on a fine geographical scale. In the village of Cacao in French Guiana, the study of the spatial and temporal distribution of malaria cases, during an epidemic, allowed a better understanding of the environmental factors promoting malaria transmission. METHODS: A dynamic cohort of 839 persons living in 176 households (only people residing permanently in the village) was constituted between January 1st, 2002 and December 31st, 2007.The information about the number of inhabitants per household, the number of confirmed cases of Plasmodium vivax and house GPS coordinates were collected to search for spatial or temporal clustering using Kurlldorff's statistical method. RESULTS: Of the 839 persons living permanently in the village of Cacao, 359 persons presented at least one vivax malaria episode between 2002 and 2007. Five temporal clusters and four spatial clusters were identified during the study period. In all temporal clusters, April was included. Two spatial clusters were localized at the north of the village near the Comté River and two others localized close to orchards. CONCLUSION: The spatial heterogeneity of malaria in the village may have been influenced by environmental disturbances due to local agricultural policies: deforestation, cultures of fresh produce, or drainage of water for agriculture. This study allowed generating behavioural, entomological, or environmental hypotheses that could be useful to improve prevention campaigns.

Résumé : Les mutations continues de l’environnement culturel des habitants de Guyane favorisent une prise de conscience des attentes des populations locales et de leur demande sociale en matière de lecture publique. Cela devrait à terme susciter l’émergence d’un public « avisé » malgré l’influence de la tradition orale. Par conséquent, face à la complexité du terrain sociologique, il est nécessaire de modifier les stratégies des acteurs et de les adapter aux réalités sociales et à la vie quotidienne des populations concernées. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, sur quelles représentations sociales peuvent reposer les interventions des acteurs ? Cette question trouvera sa réponse dans une perception objective de la réalité sociale des populations locales.
The ongoing evolutions of the cultural environment of Guianese people promote awareness of the expectations of local people and their social demand for public reading. This should eventually lead to the emergence of a public informed despite the influence of oral tradition. Therefore, given the complexity of the sociological field, it is necessary to change the players' strategies and adapt to social realities and daily lives of the people concerned. What social representations should the performances of actors be based on in order to reach these objectives? The answer to that question will be found thanks to an objective look at the social reality of the local populations.

Yellow leaf disease is a recent, important and widely spread disease of sugarcane (6), causing severe yield losses on susceptible cultivars. The disease is caused by Sugarcane Yellow Leaf Virus (SCLRV) of the genus Polerovirus in the family Luteoviridae. This virus is transmitted from plant to plant only by aphids in a persistent, circulative and non replicative manner. The epidemic of the SCYLV was little studied and there is a need for information on the spatial spread of the disease and on the role of the aphid in the disease spread. SCYLV was first identified in Guadeloupe in 1996 and Melanaphis sacchari has been the only SCYLV vector found in sugarcane fields. Even if the infection rate is relatively low (0% to 21%), disease may increase and cause damage to sugarcane in Guadeloupe. Even though disease free tissue cultured plants are used for sanitary control in Guadeloupe, understanding SCYLV spread by its vector may help determine additional management strategies against the virus.

Résumé : Informations gathered in the mangrove of the Fort-De-France bay of Martinique (F.W.I.) showed a decreased physiological condition of Crassostrea rhizophorae in the south part of the bay explained by the presence of zinc and by physico-chemical parameters modified in the wet season, such as decreased salinity and decreased levels of nutrients. Bioaccumulation of zinc, lead and cadmium was highly correlated to sediment contamination. Contamination by pesticides and organochlorides was found mainly in oysters from the North part of the bay, characterized by industrial activities and agricultural inputs.

Résumé : On observe en martinique certains élèves qui entrent et sortent du système secondaire ne maîtrisant pas le langage écrit. cependant certains troubles du langage écrit pourraient provenir d'un manque de repères, de désordre de la « maison intérieure ». des travaux plaçant l'individu dans une perspective constructiviste ont certes déjà été menés en martinique. cependant des travaux mettant l'élève martiniquais au centre de sa culture et considérant cette dernière comme vecteur de compétences écrites et de savoir pourraient être considérés comme un nouveau champ d'investigation. d'après jérôme bruner les récits en forme l'expérience humaine.mes recherches m'amèneront à considérer deux genres de récits : les récits autobiographiques et les contes martiniquais comme des vecteurs de la culture locale et comme des compensateurs de manques au niveau des mémoires cognitives, collectives, culturelles et individuelles. ils pourraient par voie de conséquence devenir des moyens de remédiation aux problèmes liés à l'écrit. je privilégierai comme champ d'observation les adolescents en difficulté entrant en classe de sixième.
The present research deals with cultural psychology. It aims to show how culture can influence the cognitive skills of underachieving students.Before cultural psychology emerged, social constructivism best represented by Piaget and Vygotski, and later in the twentieth century by Jérôme Bruner or Bertrand Troadec underlined the importance of culture in children’s mental dispositions.Their research on influence of culture in children’s cognitive dispositions are used as guiding principle.Over the years, it has been noticed that quite a large number of Martinican secondary school students from ages 11 to 12 had writing problems. In reality, national assessments have always confirmed this fact. Obviously papers about children’s writing problems have been written by many specialists. But it is interesting to consider this issue in relation to cultural psychology. In addition, this perspective shows the subject in his own singularity in interaction with his social background. It appears that stories, presented as social background’s products, are considered as systems which make sense for students who are in cognitive distress. Skills in writting will thus become for us a kind of mirror to assess the quality of thinking.

Résumé : Sea fish farms with production of more than 20 tons per year in France must obtain two operating licences: (i) one for Sea Farming (AECM), with the aim of ensuring that the granted site and use of the maritime public domain for exploitation will respect all restrictions of general interest; (ii) one for regulating Facilities Classified for the Protection of the Environment (ICPE). Although the first one requires a relatively simple licence request file, the second one demands a very complete file, which includes, beyond the notice of exploitation information, a complete impact study, as well as a hazards study and a health and safety notice. In this context, petitioners in Corsica (adjustment of status or new exploitation) are faced with the same difficulties, which highlighted the need for a methodological guide adapted to each region's specific situation, assembling in particular the necessary baseline data (legal, zootechnical, geographical, climatic, socio-economic, ecological...) as well as recognised methods for evaluating the potential effects of the farm on the environment. Development of this guide was supported by ADEC and supervised by a steering committee composed of representatives from the administrations concerned, fish farmers and scientific bodies. The significant aspects dealt with the effects of fish farming on Posidonie herbarium, a protected species very present in Corsica and with coordinating the two AECM and ICPE procedures. For each part of the ICPE file, the guide introduces the technical or scientific context and, depending upon the case, the state of the art, sources of available data, acquisition and methods of acquiring measurements and of assessing the potential effects, as well as practical editing recommendations. Finally, the guide is made complete by a model schedule of conditions designed to help petitioners to have a specialist research department incorporate all or part of the file. This guide primarily concerns first-time marine facilities for exploitation in Corsica, conceived of as in the open sea rather than in confined spaces. Nonetheless, any fish farmer or future fish farmer needing to process a request for an exploitation licence may find it useful.
Les piscicultures marines de plus de 20 t/an de production sont soumises en France à l'obtention de deux autorisations d'exploiter : (i) celle au titre des Cultures Marines (AECM), visant à s'assurer que le site concédé et l'usage du domaine public maritime pour l'exploitation permettent de respecter l'ensemble des contraintes d'intérêt général ; (ii) celle au titre de la réglementation des Installations Classées pour la Protection de l'Environnement (ICPE). Si la première nécessite un dossier de demande d'autorisation relativement simple, la seconde requiert un dossier très complet, qui comprend, outre une notice de renseignements sur l'exploitation, une étude d'impact complète, ainsi qu'une étude des dangers et une notice d'hygiène et de sécurité. Dans ce contexte, les demandeurs en Corse (régularisation ou exploitation nouvelle) sont confrontés aux mêmes difficultés, ce qui a mis en évidence le besoin d'un guide méthodologique adapté aux spécificités régionales, rassemblant en particulier les données de base nécessaires (juridiques, zootechniques, géographiques, climatiques, socio-économiques, écologiques...) ainsi que les méthodes reconnues de l'évaluation des effets potentiels de la ferme sur l'environnement. L'élaboration de ce guide a été soutenue par l'ADEC et suivie par un comité de pilotage composé de représentants des administrations concernées, des pisciculteurs et d'organismes scientifiques. Les aspects importants ont porté sur les effets de la pisciculture sur l'herbier de Posidonie, espèce protégée très présente en Corse et sur la coordination entre les deux procédures AECM et ICPE. Pour chaque partie du dossier ICPE, le guide présente le contexte technique ou scientifique et selon le cas, l'état de l'art, les sources de données disponibles, les méthodes d'acquisition des mesures et d'évaluation des effets potentiels, ainsi que des recommandations pratiques de rédaction. Enfin, le guide est complété par un cahier des charges type destiné à aider les demandeurs à confier à un bureau d'étude spécialisé la réalisation de tout ou partie de la constitution du dossier. Ce guide concerne prioritairement les installations marines de nouvelles exploitations en Corse, envisagées en mer ouverte plutôt que dans des espaces confinés. Néanmoins tout pisciculteur ou futur pisciculteur devant instruire une demande d'autorisation d'exploiter peut y trouver intérêt.

Résumé : The red drum Sciaenops ocellatus is an estuarine-dependent sciaenid that has supported important recreational and commercial fisheries for many years. Since the 1980s, this species has been farmed in different regions of the world and studies have been conducted to find natural ways to improve its culture. Sciaenops ocellatus is well known for making calls but studies on this characteristic have been mainly restricted to passive acoustics. The aim of this study was to provide acoustic-related information that could be useful in rearing practices. We have studied in detail fish calling characteristics, described their sound-producing mechanism and tested the recordings in different kinds of confinements (floating cages, concrete and fibreglass tanks). Contrary to previous studies, calls were recorded mainly in the morning, between 06:00 and 09:00. Sounds are made only by males; females do not have sound-producing apparatus. The anatomy, muscle ultrastructure data and calling characteristics show conclusively that calls result from the contraction of high speed muscles which are characterized by the very small diameter (7 μm) of the muscle cells. Preliminary results suggest sound characteristics can give information on the fish physiology but further studies are needed. The effects of resonance of fibreglass tanks are experimentally highlighted, showing unequivocally that all the characteristics of fish calls are completely distorted, even in big tanks (13 m3). These findings should be taken into account when using pre-recorded sounds in the rearing of this species because it can affect communication during courtship activity.

Chromatin modification enzymes are important regulators of gene expression and some are evolutionarily conserved from yeast to human. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a major model organism for genome-wide studies that aim at the identification of target genes under the control of conserved epigenetic regulators. Ume6 interacts with the upstream repressor site 1 (URS1) and represses transcription by recruiting both the conserved histone deacetylase Rpd3 (through the co-repressor Sin3) and the chromatin-remodeling factor Isw2. Cells lacking Ume6 are defective in growth, stress response, and meiotic development. RNA profiling studies and in vivo protein-DNA binding assays identified mRNAs or transcript isoforms that are directly repressed by Ume6 in mitosis. However, a comprehensive understanding of the transcriptional alterations, which underlie the complex ume6Δ mutant phenotype during fermentation, respiration, or sporulation, is lacking. We report the protein-coding transcriptome of a diploid MAT a/α wild-type and ume6/ume6 mutant strains cultured in rich media with glucose or acetate as a carbon source, or sporulation-inducing medium. We distinguished direct from indirect effects on mRNA levels by combining GeneChip data with URS1 motif predictions and published high-throughput in vivo Ume6-DNA binding data. To gain insight into the molecular interactions between successive waves of Ume6-dependent meiotic genes, we integrated expression data with information on protein networks. Our work identifies novel Ume6 repressed genes during growth and development and reveals a strong effect of the carbon source on the derepression pattern of transcripts in growing and developmentally arrested ume6/ume6 mutant cells. Since yeast is a useful model organism for chromatin-mediated effects on gene expression, our results provide a rich source for further genetic and molecular biological work on the regulation of cell growth and cell differentiation in eukaryotes.

Résumé : In tropical shrimp ponds, the increasing of feed input, concomitantly with the stocking shrimp biomass, induces an eutrophication of the ecosystem. Although difficult to maintain, its stability is required to guarantee the success of the culture. A 110-day period of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton stock and dynamics in an earthen pond (1.2 ha area, 1 m depth) was monitored using flow cytometry to provide baseline information on community characteristics and ecosystem instability. Seven autotrophic cell types were identified over the whole sampling period. Prokaryotic cells included Synechococcus sp., a group named UNK which presented an atypical new flow cytometric signature and picoeukaryotes (PEUK). Nanophytoplankton cells were represented by 4 groups: NAN1, NAN2, NAN3 and Cryptophytes. During the first part of the survey, picophytoplankton dominated the phytoplanktonic assemblage. The mean abundance of total cells (up to 8 x 10(6) cells mL(-1)) was among the highest recorded in marine and brackish waters. Bacterial abundance and production ranged from 0.8 to 5.1 x 10(7) cells mL(-1) and from 30 to 110 mu g C L-1 h(-1). A shift from pico to nanophytoplankton abundance was observed for a few days from d 96. During this period, heterotrophic bacteria production and abundance suddenly dropped, implying a change in the functioning of the microbial loop. This shift was concomitant with a significant shrimp mortality outbreak due to Vibrio penaeicida, the etiological agent of a disease known as Syndrome 93, which affects the shrimp industry in New Caledonia. This survey suggests that flow cytometric analysis could be used for the monitoring of aquaculture systems to improve our understanding of the complex phytoplankton and bacterial dynamics of these systems and its potential influence on disease development. As climate change continues to impact socio-ecological systems, tools that assist conservation managers to understand vulnerability and target adaptations are essential. Quantitative assessments of vulnerability are rare because available frameworks are complex and lack guidance for dealing with data limitations and integrating across scales and disciplines. This paper describes a semi-quantitative method for assessing vulnerability to climate change that integrates socio-ecological factors to address management objectives and support decision-making. The method applies a framework first adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and uses a structured 10-step process. The scores for each framework element are normalized and multiplied to produce a vulnerability score and then the assessed components are ranked from high to low vulnerability. Sensitivity analyses determine which indicators most influence the analysis and the resultant decision-making process so data quality for these indicators can be reviewed to increase robustness. Prioritisation of components for conservation considers other economic, social and cultural values with vulnerability rankings to target actions that reduce vulnerability to climate change by decreasing exposure or sensitivity and/or increasing adaptive capacity. This framework provides practical decision-support and has been applied to marine ecosystems and fisheries, with two case applications provided as examples: (1) food security in Pacific Island nations under climate-driven fish declines, and (2) fisheries in the Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia. The step-wise process outlined here is broadly applicable and can be undertaken with minimal resources using existing data, thereby having great potential to inform adaptive natural resource management in diverse locations.

The island of Moorea in French Polynesia is representative of a relatively well preserved small tropical oceanic island but both its terrestrial and marine ecosystems are currently under strong anthropogenic pressures. The terrestrial ecosystems are facing an increasing urbanization, and the destruction and modification of their natural habitats by cultivation and forestry plantations, accidental or intentional fires, and particularly by the invasion of alien plant and animal species. Coastal areas and reef ecosystems are threatened by shoreline artificialization, sedimentation due to soil erosion, increasing uses of marine and lagoon resources and frequency of coral bleaching events. A significant erosion of terrestrial and marine biodiversity is observed on the island since the last decades. In the context of the Land Management Plan (PGA) and Marine Area Management Plan (PGEM) recently set up in the island by local authorities, scientific surveys and inventories were made in 2006 in order to assess the status of terrestrial biodiversity (vascular plants) and marine biodiversity (reef fishes) and compare areas with different anthropogenic pressures. Studies conducted on the flora and the vegetation at low and middle elevation along altitudinal transects show that the plant invasion process is related to climatic and topographic factors, and species autoecology. The marine study aims to compare the protected areas with control areas in order to test the effectiveness of protection measures and to propose a streamlined monitoring protocol. A methodological study in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems was conducted in order to propose biodiversity indicators which are crucial for decision making in conservation and sustainable development of island biodiversity. We used Geographic Information System (GIS) as a fast and intuitive tool for mapping indicators and their variability. This methodological approach developed on the island of Moorea could be used as a model for other tropical islands
Moorea est une petite île océanique tropicale de la Polynésie française relativement bien préservée, mais dont les écosystèmes terrestres et marins sont actuellement soumis à de fortes pressions anthropiques. Le milieu terrestre est confronté à une urbanisation croissante, à la destruction ou à la modification des habitats naturels pour l’extension des cultures ou des plantations forestières, aux incendies volontaires ou accidentels, et particulièrement à l’invasion d’espèces végétales et animales introduites. Les zones côtières et les récifs coralliens sont menacés par de multiples perturbations telles que l’artificialisation des lignes de rivage, l’apport de sédiments dus à l’érosion des sols, l’augmentation des usages des ressources marines et lagonaires et de la fréquence des phénomènes de blanchissement du corail. Une érosion sensible de la biodiversité terrestre et marine de l’île est observée depuis les dernières décennies. Dans le cadre du Plan Général d’Aménagement (PGA) et du Plan de Gestion de l’Espace Maritime (PGEM) mis en place par les autorités locales, des inventaires scientifiques ont été réalisés en 2006 dans le but d’évaluer l’état de la biodiversité terrestre (plantes vasculaires) et marine (poissons récifaux) et de comparer des zones soumises à différentes perturbations. Les études réalisées sur la flore et la végétation de basse et moyenne altitude le long de transects altitudinaux montrent des processus d’invasion végétale différents en relation avec les facteurs climatiques, topographiques et autoécologiques des espèces. Les études en milieu marin visent à comparer des aires protégées à des aires témoins afin de suivre l’efficacité des mesures de gestion. La réflexion méthodologique menée parallèlement sur les deux écosystèmes a pour but d’illustrer différents indices de biodiversité nécessaires à la prise de décision en matière de conservation ou de développement durable de la biodiversité insulaire et de réaliser un état de référence pour établir un diagnostic sur l’état de la biodiversité. La représentation cartographique des indices à l’aide d’un SIG, illustrée dans cette étude avec la richesse spécifique terrestre et marine, permet une lecture intuitive et rapide de la variabilité de cet indice dont la restitution est basée sur une standardisation du nombre d’espèces. Cette approche méthodologique développée sur l’île de Moorea pourrait servir de modèle pour d’autres îles tropicales
