Does coastal lagoon habitat quality affect fish growth rate and their recruitment? Insights from fishing and acoustic surveys Auteur(s) : Brehmer, Patrice Laugier, Thierry Kantoussan, J. Galgani, Francois Mouillot, D. Éditeur(s) : Academic Press Ltd- Elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Ensuring the sustainability of fish resources necessitates understanding their interaction with coastal habitats, which is becoming ever more challenging in the context of ever increasing anthropogenic pressures. The ability of coastal lagoons, exposed to major sources of disturbance, to provide resources and suitable habitats for growth and survival of juvenile fish is especially important. We analysed three lagoons with different ecological statuses and habitat quality on the basis of their eutrophication and ecotoxicity (Trix test) levels. Fish abundances were sampled using fishing and horizontal beaming acoustic surveys with the same protocols in the same year. The relative abundance of Anguilla anguilla, Dicentrarchus labrax or the Mugilidae group was not an indicator of habitat quality, whereas Atherina boyeri and Sparus aurata appeared to be more sensitive to habitat quality. Fish abundance was higher in the two lagoons with high eutrophication and ecotoxicity levels than in the less impacted lagoon, while fish sizes were significantly higher in the two most severely impacted lagoons. This leads us to suggest low habitat quality may increase fish growth rate (by the mean of a cascading effect), but may reduce lagoon juvenile abundance by increasing larval mortality. Such a hypothesis needs to be further validated using greater investigations which take into account more influences on fish growth and recruitment in such variable environments under complex multi-stressor conditions. Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1985 Résumé : The aquaculture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii is launched in Martinigue by the regional council in 1976. A first "green water" type hatchery is built and provides juveniles to the first ponds. In 1978, CNEXO is asked to cooperate in scientific assistance. A new hatchery is built with COP "clear water" system and produces in 1980. The development of ponds (20 ha) needs the increase of the hatcheries capacity, which is now done with one single method and intensive larval first stage (7-8 millions PL. cap). In Guadeloupe, the first ponds started in 1978. Two cooperatives and 11 ha of ponds at this time have determined the construction of CNEXO in the construction of a regional hatchery. A small light one is already under production since July 83. From body scale ontogeny to species ontogeny: Histological and morphological assessment of the Late Devonian acanthodian Triazeugacanthus affinis from Miguasha, Canada Auteur(s) : Chevrinais, Marion Sire, Jean-Yves Cloutier, Richard Auteurs secondaires : Université du Québec A Rimouski (UQAR) Evolution Paris Seine ; Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS) ; Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Public Library of Science Résumé : International audience Growth series of Palaeozoic fishes are rare because of the fragility of larval and juvenile specimens owing to their weak mineralisation and the scarcity of articulated specimens. This rarity makes it difficult to describe early vertebrate growth patterns and processes in extinct taxa. Indeed, only a few growth series of complete Palaeozoic fishes are available; however, they allow the growth of isolated elements to be described and individual growth from these isolated elements to be inferred. In addition, isolated and in situ scales are generally abundant and well-preserved, and bring information on (1) their morphology and structure relevant to phylogenetic relationships and (2) individual growth patterns and processes relative to species ontogeny. The Late Devonian acanthodian Triazeugacanthus affinis from the Miguasha Fossil-Lagerstä tte preserves one of the best known fossilised ontogenies of early vertebrates because of the exceptional preservation, the large size range, and the abundance of complete specimens. Here, we present morphological, histological, and chemical data on scales from juvenile and adult specimens (scales not being formed in lar-vae). Histologically, Triazeugacanthus scales are composed of a basal layer of acellular bone housing Sharpey's fibers, a mid-layer of mesodentine, and a superficial layer of ganoine. Developmentally, scales grow first through concentric addition of mesodentine and bone around a central primordium and then through superposition of ganoine layers. Onto-genetically, scales form first in the region below the dorsal fin spine, then squamation spreads anteriorly and posteriorly, and on fin webs. Phylogenetically, Triazeugacanthus scales show similarities with acanthodians (e.g. " box-in-box " growth), chondrichthyans (e.g. squamation pattern), and actinopterygians (e.g. ganoine). Scale histology and growth are interpreted in the light of a new phylogenetic analysis of gnathostomes supporting acantho-dians as stem chondrichthyans. Contribution a l'étude des xylophages marins Auteur(s) : Deschamps, P. Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : These first results might clarify some problems linked to the biology of tarets and other small lignivorous crustaceans. The systematic of the molluscs Teredinidae, so complex, is only based on the study of pallets, which is a great source of confusion when one has to examine the woods after the molluscs' death. We tried to distinguish the species by examining the striates and denticulations on the shelves. The size of the intervals between the striates and the proportional size of the denticulations, as well as the shape of the denticulation marks of the middle part, can indeed allow us to differentiate between some species. [...] Amphi-Atlantic cold-seep Bathymodiolus species complexes across the equatorial belt Auteur(s) : Olu, Karine Von Cosel, R Hourdez, S Carney, S Jollivet, D Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Deep-sea bivalves of the subfamily Bathymodiolinae (family Mytilidae) are very widespread and form dense beds in reduced environments such as hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. Bathymodiolus mussels recently discovered on African cold seeps strangely resemble Gulf of Mexico and Barbados seep species. This raises intriguing questions regarding their taxonomic relationships and their dispersal capabilities across the Atlantic equatorial belt. The morphological study of the shell and soft parts of mussels from either sites of the Atlantic shows that they form two distinct groups: the Bathymodiolus boomerang group (also including Bathymodiolus heckerae and a species from Africa), and the Bathymodiolus childressi group (also including Bathymodiolus mauritanicus and one species from Barbados). Phylogenetic relationships inferred from the nucleotide sequences of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) confirmed morphological analyses and the existence of two amphi-Atlantic complexes of species. Both ITS2 and COI phylogenies indicate almost no difference between the two eastern Atlantic seep mussels (Bathymodiolus sp. A and B. mauritanicus) and their western Atlantic counterparts (B. boomerang and Bathymodiolus sp. B; Barbados Prism cold seeps). In the B. boomerang complex, B. heckerae seems to differ from the Barbados and the African species, whereas these latter two are not distinguishable. In the B. childressi complex, relationships are less clear and do not support the description of new species from the Barbados. Past and present-day connections across the Atlantic are discussed in the light of both larval dispersal capabilities of the mussels and the equatorial Atlantic circulation to appreciate whether these species could represent true amphi-Atlantic species. Reproduction in captivity and growth of Penaeus monodon, Fabricius in Polynesia Auteur(s) : Aquacop, Aquacop Éditeur(s) : 8 th Workshop of World Mariculture Society, Costa Rica, 10-13 janvier 1977 Résumé : To develop shrimp fanning in French Polynesia where no indigenous commercial species of penaeid prawn exists, the first step is to select the right species according to the following criteria: maturation and spawning in captivity, mass production of post-larvae, fast growth at semi-intensive density, acceptability of artificial diet, disease resistance and hardiness. This paper presents the results on P. monodon, Fabricius, the largest Indo-Pacific species. The critically endangered Goliath Grouper, Epinephelus itajara, is found in the turbid and brackish waters of French Guiana, where the species is subject to a coastal fishery. Goliath Grouper populations inhabit all rocky habitats and exhibit increasing abundance with depth. Around 30% of individuals less than 115 cm may derive from the abundant mangrove habitat along the french Guiana coast. There is a ontogenetic shift of the diet, primarily crustacivorous, individuals >140 cm become piscivorous. The Goliath Grouper population in French Guiana is composed primarily og juvelines. The fate of the juvelines is unknonw, some may be caught in the fishery, others may move to other habitat. No evidence of spawning or gonadal readiness was found in french Guiana. it is possible that environmental conditions (high turbidity and temperature) are not conducive to reproductive activity. Goliath Grouper may migrate down current from French Guiana to Trinidad and Tobago or further. No movement of Goliath Grouper was found against the current toward Brazil. French Guiana juveniles may be derived from spawns occuring off Brazil. Calculated total mortality of Goliath Grouper off French Guiana is high (0.65) in both fished and protected areas suggesting that illegal fishing is occuring within the protected area, or that emigration rates are high. Assuming that the adult population of Goliath Grouper in French Guiana has been reduced due to fishing, protection of spawning-size adults (larger than about 150 cm TL) should be instated. http://www.theses.fr/2014AGUY0721/document | Partager |
Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1988 Résumé : Shrimp and prawn aquaculture is developing fast and amounts presently to 8% of world consumption. It concerns mainly various species of penaeids and is done with different techniques where feeding plays a variable role. This role is discussed both in the case of more or less extensive farming and in the case of intensive farming. The lack of knowledge in the field of nutrition itself is emphasized as well as the importance of feed technology both for juvenile foods and larval microcapsules or microparticles. Quantitative relationship of two viruses (MrNV and XSV) in white-tail disease of Macrobrachium rosenbergii Auteur(s) : Zhang, Hj Wang, Hm Yuan, Jf Li, Lj Zhang, Jh Bonami, Jean-robert Shi, Zl Éditeur(s) : Inter-Research Résumé : Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) and extra small virus (XSV) were purified from diseased freshwater prawns M rosenbergii and used to infect healthy post-larvae (PL) by an immersion method. Three groups of prawns were challenged with various combined doses of MrNV and XSV. Signs of white-tail disease (WTD) were observed in Groups 1 and 2, which had been challenged with combinations containing relatively high proportions of MrNV and low proportions of XSV. By contrast there was little sign of WTD in Group 3, which had been challenged with a higher proportion of XSV than MrNV. A 2-step Taqman real-time RT-PCR was developed and applied to quantify viral copy numbers in each challenged PL. Results showed that genomic copies of both viruses were much higher in Groups 1 and 2 than they were in Group 3, indicating that MrNV plays a key role in WTD of M rosenbergii. The linear correlation between MrNV and XSV genome copies in infected prawns demonstrated that XSV is a satellite virus, dependent on MrNV, but its role in pathogenicity of WTD remains unclear. Quantification of Vibrio penaeicida, the etiological agent of Syndrome 93 in New Caledonian shrimp, by real-time PCR using SYBR Green I chemistry Auteur(s) : Goarant, Cyrille Merien, F Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Shrimp farming is a small but growing industry in New Caledonia. Since 1993, "Syndrome 93" has been affecting New Caledonian shrimp farming industry every cold season, causing severe epizootic mortalities in grow-out ponds and significant losses. Highly pathogenic strains of Vibrio penaeicida are considered the etiological agent of the disease in Litopenaeus stylirostris. On one hand, studies demonstrated that healthy shrimp may carry V penaeicida for weeks with a high overall prevalence, regardless of any seasonal pattern or temperature conditions. On the other hand, larvae are free of V penaeicida and are also resistant to experimental infection. V penaeicida is frequently detected in incoming water pumped from the bays, which was shown, by a molecular typing study, to be the infectious source. This particular epidemiological pattern highlights the major role of the factors that trigger and aggravate the disease in grow-out ponds, where shrimp populations carry the pathogen all year round. In order to gain a better understanding of "Syndrome 93" epidemiology, quantification of V penaeicida both in shrimp and the shrimp farm ecosystem is necessary. This article describes the steps in the successful development of a real-time PCR quantification assay of V penaeicida in shrimp haemolymph, seawater (from ponds or bays) and sediment pore water, including the choice of an accurate extraction technique. The entire detection method; including sample processing, DNA extraction and real-time PCR amplification, can be completed within 4 h. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved. Combining sensitivity and uncertainty analysis to evaluate the impact of management measures with ISIS-Fish: marine protected areas for the Bay of Biscay anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) fishery Auteur(s) : Lehuta, Sigrid Mahevas, Stephanie Petitgas, Pierre Pelletier, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Oxford Univ Press Résumé : Spatio-seasonal explicit simulation models can predict the impact of spatial management measures on marine fish populations and fishing activities. As fisheries are complex systems, fisheries simulation models are often complex, with many uncertain parameters. Here, the methodology is provided to deliver fishery diagnostics within an uncertainty context using a complex simulation tool. A sensitivity analysis of the model is performed on model outputs using partial least-squares to identify the most sensitive parameters. The impact of several management measures is then simulated using a statistical simulation design taking into account the uncertainty of the selected sensitive parameters. This approach was applied to the Bay of Biscay anchovy stock using the ISIS-Fish (Integration of Spatial Information for Simulation of Fisheries) model to assess the impact of imposing marine protected areas (MPAs) conditionally on parameter uncertainty. The diagnostic appeared to be highly sensitive to the mortality of larvae and juveniles, growth, and reproduction. The uncertainty of the values of these parameters did not permit any of the simulated MPA designs to be proposed. However, according to anchovy catch and biomass, the simulations allowed the low impact of closure duration to be shown and underscored the utility of protecting such key processes as spawning. Acquisition of susceptibility to Vibrio penaeicida in Penaeus stylirostris postlarvae and juveniles Auteur(s) : Goarant, Cyrille Regnier, France Brizard, Raphael Marteau, Anne-laure Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Vibriosis is a major disease problem in shrimp aquaculture, affecting all developmental stages, from larvae in hatchery tanks to juveniles and broodstock in growout ponds. However, bacterial strains responsible for vibriosis in the successive stages are usually considered to be different, and virulence specificity has been reported both at the species and at the stage levels. The so-called « Syndrome 93 » is a seasonal juvenile vibriosis caused by Vibrio penaeicida which affects Penaeus stylirostris in growout ponds and broodstock tanks in New Caledonia. This pathology does not cause any mortality in hatchery or nursery phases. An experimental infection design using balneation of postlarvae and early juveniles in V. penaeicida suspensions was used to evaluate the developmental stage at which shrimp become sensitive to this vibriosis. We demonstrated that the acquisition of susceptibility to this pathogen is very sudden and correlated with the acquisition of the definitive rostral formula, and from this draw conclusions regarding virulence mechanisms of V. penaeicida in P. stylirostris. Characterization of molecular processes involved in the pearl formation in Pinctada margaritifera for a sustainable development of pearl farming industry in French Polynesia Auteur(s) : Gueguen, Yannick Montagnani, Caroline Joubert, Caroline Marie, Benjamin Belliard, Corinne Tayale, Alexandre Fievet, Julie Levy, Peva Résumé : Tahiti’s pearl farming industry plays a major socio-economic role in French Polynesia. In an increasingly competitive market where the production of high quality pearls becomes essential, research can help secure and ensure sustainable production. In that context, Ifremer, in close collaboration with the “direction des resources marines” (French Polynesian government agency) has developed research projects on the “sustainable development of pearl farming”.
This program is organized along 3 axes: (1) understanding the animal physiology and initiating a genetically selective breeding program of donor oysters; (2)
understanding pearl oyster larvae dispersal and recruitment; (3) understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying biomineralization processes during
shell and pearl formation. It is in this frame that we have developed a highthroughput Expressed Sequence Tags pyrosequencing program on the calcifying
mantle, combined with proteomic analyses of the shell and pearl. We analyzed 276738 EST sequences, leading to the constitution of a P. margaritifera mantle
transcripts catalogue of 82 sequences potentially involved in biomineralization. Our results provided direct evidence that our ESTs data set covers a large
number of the matrix proteins of P. margaritifera. In addition, our proteomic analysis enabled us to retrieve, in silico, all the sequences from P. margaritifera
involved in the biomineralization process already published on databases. Integration of these two methods allowed, for the first time, the global composition of calcifying tissue and calcified structures to be examined in tandem.
