Malaria remains a major health problem in French Guiana despite the decrease in the number of cases since 2010. A previous study in Camopi, an Amerindian village on the Oyapock River, revealed that Plasmodium falciparum malaria incidence was significantly related to landscape features and that its spatial distribution exhibited some obvious patterns. In the present study, we first identified the spatial patterns that exhibit a significant Moran's index of spatial auto-correlation and that significantly explain P. falciparum malaria incidence within the multiple linear regression framework. Secondly, we linked these patterns with remotely sensed environmental features. The selected model is composed of five spatial components: three patterns, representing 50.7% of the total variance, are associated with large scale variations of the incidence, and the remaining patterns are associated with local scale variations and represent 28.7% of the total variance. Different hamlet clusters that have specificities in terms of P. falciparum malaria incidence rate, environmental characteristics and mosquito control strategies have been identified. The methodology proposed in the present study can provide useful knowledge on the spatial distribution of the P. falciparum malaria incidence in Camopi at different scales and on possible explanation of such distribution, as a function of the scale.

We are interested in the e ect of some types of events on dispersion indexes such as the mean crowding. From a mathematical point of view, we consider that a distribution of individuals is a realization of a point process and we study the consequences of a stochastic point thinning on the model distributional properties. A case study is provided from counting of aphids of the cotton plant carried out before and after thunderstorm. The mortality rate due to the thunderstorm is analyzed according to characteristics of thunderstorms, leaf strata and larvae stages.

Résumé : Selon le Consensus de Washington (1989), la Banque mondiale et les institutions internationales, la bonne gouvernance signifie la gestion saine du développement. L’objectif du présent article est d’analyser le lien entre bonne gouvernance et développement économique dans le cas des Etats insulaires. Après l’examen de la bonne gouvernance dans le cas particulier des Etats insulaires, nous utilisons la méthodologie de l’analyse en composantes principales afin de distinguer les caractéristiques institutionnelles et la gouvernance des économies insulaires selon leur niveau de développement économique.
According to Washington Consensus (1989), World Bank and international institutions, good governance means sound development management. The aim of this paper is to analyze the link between good governance and economic development in the case study of Island States. After the examination of the good governance in Island States, we use the principal component analysis in order to distinguish the institutional characteristics and the governance of the Island States in accordance with their level of development.

Accessory phases are important hosts of trace elements; allanite may contain >90% of the REE in a bulk rock. The mobility and redistribution of several trace elements, notably HREE, Th, U, and Y is thus controlled by reactions involving allanite and other REE phases, as well as several rock-forming minerals. As these elements are commonly concentrated in mature elastic sediments, a suite of impure quartzite was studied. Two eclogite facies samples from the Monometamorphic Cover Complex of the Sesia Zone (Western Italian Alps) are presented in some detail, as they reveal a remarkably rich spectrum of reaction relationships that involve REE phases.;Two allanite-forming reactions were inferred from textures and phase compositions;(1) monazite + Ca-silicate(?) + fluid -> allanite + apatite + thorite;;(2) monazite + thorite + Ca-silicate(?) + fluid -> Th-rich allanite + auerlite +/- apatite.;Petrographic observations and thermodynamic models suggest that allanite entered the HP assemblage at similar to 530 degrees C and 17-18 kbar during prograde metamorphism.;In one sample, allanite is rimmed by epidote rich in Y and HREE that grew at the expense of xenotime. Two net transfer reactions were derived;(3) xenotime + allanite + fluid -> Y-rich epidote + apatite + thorite;;(4) xenotime + allanite + fluid -> Y-rich epidote + aeschynite + thorite + (phosphate?).;Textural relationships and trace element analyses of coexisting allanite/monazite and xenotime/Y-rich epidote reveal systematic partitioning of the REE. Partition coefficients for the HREE are compatible with equilibrium fractionation, whereas those for the LREE show patterns that seem to be inherited from the precursor phases, in this case zircon with variable LREE composition.

Résumé : According to the world organisation for animal health (OIE) an emerging disease is defined as a recently admitted serious illness, whose aetiology can, or not, have already been established, and which is likely to be propagated within a population or between populations, for example at the time of international exchanges of aquatic animals and/or products of aquatic animals. Even though the emerging diseases that affect human health have been much studied, those which affect marine organisms and species of aquaculture interest in particular are poorly documented. By restricting emergence to only infectious diseases, we aim at presenting in a non-exhaustive way some scenarios of the emergence of the diseases of aquacultured species by illustrating them with three examples available in the scientific literature: one relating to the appearance of a pathogenic agent in a new host with the case of the herpesvirus of the Koï carp, the other with the evolution of a pre-existing pathogenic agent with the case of shrimp vibriosis due to Vibrio nigripulchritudo in New Caledonia, and the last example relating to the introduction of one pathogenic pre-existing pathogen in an unscathed area with the case of Bonamia ostreae infecting the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. The causes of the emergence of diseases are multiple and implicate in an intercurrent way pathogenic agents, the environment, the host or host species and anthropogenic factors. In the marine environment, these causes are very often ignored. In this context, the development of zoosanitary surveillance networks and diagnostic tools present a considerable interest in order to anticipate, prevent and/or intervene on the emergence of the diseases by limiting their sanitary, ecological and political consequences.
Selon l'Office International des Epizooties (OIE) une maladie émergente désigne une maladie grave récemment reconnue, dont la cause peut, ou non, avoir déjà été établie, et qui est susceptible de se propager au sein d'une population ou entre des populations, par exemple à l'occasion d'échanges internationaux d'animaux aquatiques et/ou de produits d'animaux aquatiques. Si les maladies émergentes qui affectent la santé humaine ont été très étudiées, celles qui touchent les organismes marins et les organismes aquacoles d'intérêt économique en particulier sont en revanche peu documentées. C'est en restreignant l'émergence aux seules maladies infectieuses que seront présentés de façon non exhaustive quelques scénarios de l'émergence des maladies chez les organismes d'intérêt aquacole en les illustrant par trois exemples disponibles dans la littérature scientifique : l'un relatif à l'apparition d'un agent pathogène chez un nouvel hôte avec le cas de l'herpesvirus de la carpe Koï, l'autre à l'évolution d'un agent pathogène existant avec le cas de la vibriose à Vibrio nigripulchritudo sévissant dans les élevages de crevettes pénéides de Nouvelle-Calédonie et enfin le dernier lié à l'introduction d'un pathogène préexistant avec le cas de Bonamia ostreae infectant l'huître plate Ostrea edulis. Les causes d'émergence de maladies sont multiples et font intervenir de façon intercurrente l'agent pathogène, l'environnement, l'hôte ou les espèces hôtes et des facteurs anthropiques. Dans le milieu marin, ces causes sont bien souvent méconnues. Dans ce contexte le développement des réseaux de surveillance et des techniques de diagnostic revêtent un intérêt considérable afin d'anticiper, de prévenir et/ou d'intervenir sur l'émergence des maladies en limitant leur conséquences sanitaires, écologiques et politiques.

Résumé : La compétitivité touristique est un concept dont l’importance est aujourd’hui largement reconnue. La plupart des travaux consacrés à ce thème l’ont abordé jusqu’ici sous différents aspects, mais sans qu’aucun modèle théorique n’ait réussi à notre connaissance à établir les liens empiriques qui existent entre tourisme et compétitivité. Cette étude tente de combler cette lacune, en proposant d’explorer, à l’aide de la technique de cointégration et du modèle à correction d’erreur, dans un contexte bivarié, la relation empirique qui existe entre tourisme et compétitivité, comme condition préalable à l’application du test de causalité de Granger. Cette procédure est adoptée et appliquée au cas des Antilles françaises (Guadeloupe et Martinique) sur la période 1990-2010. Les résultats révèlent l’existence d’une relation de cointégration entre compétitivité et activité touristique. Cependant, les tests de causalité de Granger, basés sur un modèle à correction d’erreurs indiquent qu’il n’existe pas de causalité ou d’impact unidirectionnel ou bidirectionnel entre variation de la recette touristique/PIB (proxy du développement touristique) et variation du PIB réel par habitant (proxy de la compétitivité). Par conséquent, l’hypothèse de la croissance tirée par le tourisme ne peut être inférée pour la Guadeloupe et la Martinique. Il s’agit d’enseignements majeurs dont devraient tenir compte les autorités responsables de cette activité.
The tourism competitiveness is an important concept today. The most studies investigate this theme from different ways. However, there are few studies about empirical link between tourism and competitiveness. This paper, thus attempts to examine the empirical relationship between these two variables. It uses the cointegration and error correction model (ECM) in a bivariate context as a precondition to apply Granger causality tests. This procedure was carried out in the case of French West Indies’s tourism industry during 1990-2010. The results show that there is a long-term relationship between tourism and competitiveness. In addition, Granger causality tests reveal no one-directional or bi-directional impact in the case of tourism receipts and GDP. Therefore, tourism-led growth hypothesis (TLG) cannot be inferred for French West Indies’s economy as a major concern of destination managers.

Résumé : L’objectif de cette étude est d’analyser les impacts et les limites d’une expérience de lutte contre la pauvreté par le tourisme au travers d’une étude de cas dans le village d’Anse-la-Raye, à Sainte-Lucie.Depuis son indépendance en 1979, Sainte-Lucie a tenté de diversifier la structure économique héritée de son passé colonial, en développant notamment des sources alternatives de recettes. Au début, il y a eu un certain succès avec l'industrie de confection et le tourisme qui ont émergé comme des activités viables en dehors de l'agriculture d'exportation.À la fin des années 1980, le pays avait même atteint un taux de croissance qui aurait été considéré comme raisonnable. Sainte-Lucie a d’ailleurs été l’île ayant connu la plus grande croissance économique des Etats du CARICOM. L’exportation de la banane a contribué pour beaucoup à ces résultats, et les nouveaux secteurs ont permis la création d’emplois ainsi que des revenus et des recettes d'exportation supplémentaires.Mais comme tous les Petits Etats Insulaires en Développement (PEID), Sainte-Lucie est caractérisée par sa vulnérabilité économique face aux catastrophes naturelles et crises extérieures. Ainsi, deux des secteurs principaux de son économie se sont affaiblis ces dernières années (l’agriculture et l’industrie), avec pour résultat principal une aggravation de la pauvreté à Sainte-Lucie malgré les bons résultats du secteur touristique devenu le pilier principal de l’économie de l’île.Dans ce contexte de faible croissance économique, le gouvernement et les partenaires sociaux se sont rassemblés pour identifier les politiques susceptibles d’accélérer la croissance économique de Sainte-Lucie. Ainsi, trois axes principaux ont été retenus : l’augmentation de la production locale, la réduction du crime et la réduction de la pauvreté. Dans ce dernier cadre, le gouvernement a lancé plusieurs stratégies de lutte contre la pauvreté notamment l’aide au développement d’activités touristiques.L’étude s’intéresse plus particulièrement au village d’Anse-la-Raye et à une expérience de tourisme pro-pauvre qui y a été développé en 2000 : l’Anse-la-Raye Seafood Friday, une sorte de festival qui permet aux visiteurs de déguster les produits de la mer tous les vendredis. Ce festival a-t-il eu réellement des répercussions sur la population pauvre de la communauté d’Anse-la-Raye ? Est-il viable? Quel est son devenir?
The objective of this study is to analyse the impacts and limitations of attempts to combat poverty using tourism through a case study in the village of Anse-la-Raye, in St. Lucia.Since its independence in 1979, St. Lucia has attempted to diversify the economic structure it inherited from its colonial past, in particular developing alternative sources of revenue. Initially there was some success with the clothing industry and tourism, which emerged as viable business activities outside of agricultural exports.At the end of the 1980s, the country had reached a growth which was considered reasonable. Of all the states of CARICOM, St. Lucia has moreover experienced the greatest economic growth. Banana exports have contributed significantly to these results, and new sectors have led to the creation of jobs and income to supplement export income.But like all Small Island Developing States (SIDS), St. Lucia is characterized by vulnerability to natural disasters and external economic shocks. Two major sectors of the economy have weakened in recent years (agriculture and industry), resulting in an increase in poverty in St. Lucia despite favourable outcomes in the tourism sector, which became the primary pillar of the island.In the context of low economic growth the government and social partners gathered together to identify policies and accelerate economic growth in St. Lucia. Three main themes were identified: Increasing local production; reducing crime and reducing poverty. In this context, the government launched several strategies to combat poverty including assistance for the development of tourism.The study focuses on the village of Anse-la-Raye and the experiences of pro-poor tourism that was developed in 2000: Anse-la-Raye Seafood Friday, a kind of festival that allows visitors to taste the seafood on Fridays. Has this festival really had an impact on the poor of the community of Anse-la-Raye? Is it viable? And what is its future?

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age can be exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) at work, and exposure to EDCs in pregnancy may affect fetal growth. OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether maternal occupational exposure to EDCs during pregnancy as classified by application of a job exposure matrix was associated with birth weight, term low birth weight (LBW), length of gestation, and preterm delivery. METHODS: Using individual participant data from 133,957 mother-child pairs in 13 European cohorts spanning births from 1994 through 2011, we linked maternal job titles with exposure to 10 EDC groups as assessed through a job exposure matrix. For each group, we combined the two levels of exposure categories (possible and probable) and compared birth outcomes with the unexposed group (exposure unlikely). We performed meta-analyses of cohort-specific estimates. RESULTS: Eleven percent of pregnant women were classified as exposed to EDCs at work during pregnancy, based on job title. Classification of exposure to one or more EDC group was associated with an increased risk of term LBW [odds ratio (OR) = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.49], as were most specific EDC groups; this association was consistent across cohorts. Further, the risk increased with increasing number of EDC groups (OR = 2.11; 95% CI: 1.10, 4.06 for exposure to four or more EDC groups). There were few associations (p < 0.05) with the other outcomes; women holding job titles classified as exposed to bisphenol A or brominated flame retardants were at higher risk for longer length of gestation. CONCLUSION: Results from our large population-based birth cohort design indicate that employment during pregnancy in occupations classified as possibly or probably exposed to EDCs was associated with an increased risk of term LBW.

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a major diagnostic tool in lung diseases, including viral respiratory infections. We aimed to better define the situations where viral tests should be performed on BAL fluid (BALF). We retrospectively studied all cases where viral tests [immunofluorescence, immunocytochemistry, viral culture, and/or polymerase chain reaction (PCR)] were performed on BALF during a period of 1 year (2008) in our institution. We compared the characteristics of patients with virus-positive versus virus-negative BALF. Of the 636 BALF samples sent to the microbiology laboratory, 232 underwent viral tests. Of these, 70 (30 %) were positive and identified 85 viruses: herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 (n = 27), cytomegalovirus (CMV, n = 23), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV, n = 18), human herpesvirus (HHV)-6 (n = 12), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, n = 3), rhinovirus (n = 1), and adenovirus (n = 1). The variables associated with positive viral tests on univariate analysis were immunosuppression [human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), corticosteroids >10 mg/day for ≥3 weeks, or other immunosuppressive therapy], ground-glass attenuations on computed tomography (CT) scanning, late-onset ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and durations of (i) hospital stay, (ii) intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and (iii) mechanical ventilation before BAL (p < 0.01 for each comparison). On multivariate analysis, only immunosuppression [odds ratio (OR) 6.4, 95 % confidence interval (CI) [2.8-14.3], p < 0.0001] and ground-glass attenuations (OR 3.7, 95 % CI [1.8-7.7], p = 0.0004) remained associated with virus-positive BAL. None of the viral tests performed on BALF for the initial assessment of diffuse infiltrative lung disease (n = 15) was positive. PCR improved the diagnostic yield of viral tests on BALF by 50 %. Testing for viruses on BALF should be mostly restricted to immunocompromised patients with acute respiratory diseases and/or patients with unexplained ground-glass attenuations on CT scanning.

BACKGROUND: The association between lung cancer and occupational exposure to organic solvents is discussed. Since different solvents are often used simultaneously, it is difficult to assess the role of individual substances. OBJECTIVES: The present study is focused on an in-depth investigation of the potential association between lung cancer risk and occupational exposure to a large group of organic solvents, taking into account the well-known risk factors for lung cancer, tobacco smoking and occupational exposure to asbestos. METHODS: We analysed data from the Investigation of occupational and environmental causes of respiratory cancers (ICARE) study, a large French population-based case-control study, set up between 2001 and 2007. A total of 2276 male cases and 2780 male controls were interviewed, and long-life occupational history was collected. In order to overcome the analytical difficulties created by multiple correlated exposures, we carried out a novel type of analysis based on Bayesian profile regression. RESULTS: After analysis with conventional logistic regression methods, none of the 11 solvents examined were associated with lung cancer risk. Through a profile regression approach, we did not observe any significant association between solvent exposure and lung cancer. However, we identified clusters at high risk that are related to occupations known to be at risk of developing lung cancer, such as painters. CONCLUSIONS: Organic solvents do not appear to be substantial contributors to the occupational risk of lung cancer for the occupations known to be at risk

The release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the environment has increased very substantially over the last decades. PAHs are hydrophobic molecules which can accumulate in high concentrations in sediments acting then as major secondary sources. Fish contamination can occur through contact or residence nearby sediments or though dietary exposure. In this study, we analyzed certain physiological traits in unexposed fish (F1) issued from parents (F0) exposed through diet to three PAH mixtures at similar and environmentally relevant concentrations but differing in their compositions. For each mixture, no morphological differences were observed between concentrations. An increase in locomotor activity was observed in larvae issued from fish exposed to the highest concentration of a pyrolytic (PY) mixture. On the contrary, a decrease in locomotor activity was observed in larvae issued from heavy oil mixture (HO). In the case of the third mixture, light oil (LO), a reduction of the diurnal activity was observed during the setup of larval activity. Behavioral disruptions persisted in F1-PY juveniles and in their offspring (F2). Endocrine disruption was analyzed using cyp19a1b:GFP transgenic line and revealed disruptions in PY and LO offspring. Since no PAH metabolites were dosed in larvae, these findings suggest possible underlying mechanisms such as altered parental signaling molecule and/or hormone transferred in the gametes, eventually leading to early imprinting. Taken together, these results indicate that physiological disruptions are observed in offspring of fish exposed to PAH mixtures through diet.

BACKGROUND: Dengue and malaria are two major public health concerns in tropical settings. Although the pathogeneses of these two arthropod-borne diseases differ, their clinical and biological presentations are unspecific. During dengue epidemics, several hundred patients with fever and diffuse pain are weekly admitted at the emergency room. It is difficult to discriminate them from patients presenting malaria attacks. Furthermore, it may be impossible to provide a parasitological microscopic examination for all patients. This study aimed to establish a diagnostic algorithm for communities where dengue fever and malaria occur at some frequency in adults. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A sub-study using the control groups of a case-control study in French Guiana - originally designed to compare dengue and malaria co-infected cases to single infected cases - was performed between 2004 and 2010. In brief, 208 patients with malaria matched to 208 patients with dengue fever were compared in the present study. A predictive score of malaria versus dengue was established using .632 bootstrap procedures. Multivariate analysis showed that male gender, age, tachycardia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and CRP>5 mg/l were independently associated with malaria. The predictive score using those variables had an AUC of 0.86 (95%CI: 0.82-0.89), and the CRP was the preponderant predictive factor. The sensitivity and specificity of CRP>5 mg/L to discriminate malaria from dengue were of 0.995 (95%CI: 0.991-1) and 0.35 (95%CI 0.32-0.39), respectively. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The clinical and biological score performed relatively well for discriminating cases of dengue versus malaria. Moreover, using only the CRP level turned to be a useful biomarker to discriminate feverish patients at low risk of malaria in an area where both infections exist. It would avoid more than 33% of unnecessary parasitological examinations with a very low risk of missing a malaria attack.

Background: In French Guiana, a recent study has shown that a major part of the histoplasmosis incidence temporal fluctuations could be explained by climatic factors and thus postulated that disseminated histoplasmosis cases could be in a large proportion due to new infections. The description of the seasonal pattern of histoplasmosis could potentially help to test this new hypothesis. Patients and methods: A study using prospective data from the French Hospital Database for HIV was conducted in order to determine seasonal variations of the incidence of first cases of disseminated histoplasmosis in HIV persons in Cayenne, French Guiana. Single failure Cox proportional hazards models were used. Results: After adjusting for CD4 counts and antiretroviral treatment, the incidence of disseminated histoplasmosis was significantly higher during the Short Wet Season-Long Dry Season than during the Short Dry Season-Long Wet Season (Adjusted Hazard ratio 1.7 (1.1-2.5), P= 0.01). Conclusion: This result gives both valuable epidemiologic information to clinicians and a supplementary argument in favour of the hypothesis that an important proportion of cases were due to recent exposure. Therefore, the use of a primary prophylaxis must be discussed in French Guiana.

Résumé : We present the global general circulation model IPSL-CM5 developed to study the long-term response of the climate system to natural and anthropogenic forcings as part of the 5th Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). This model includes an interactive carbon cycle, a representation of tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry, and a comprehensive representation of aerosols. As it represents the principal dynamical, physical, and bio-geochemical processes relevant to the climate system, it may be referred to as an Earth System Model. However, the IPSL-CM5 model may be used in a multitude of configurations associated with different boundary conditions and with a range of complexities in terms of processes and interactions. This paper presents an overview of the different model components and explains how they were coupled and used to simulate historical climate changes over the past 150 years and different scenarios of future climate change. A single version of the IPSL-CM5 model (IPSL-CM5A-LR) was used to provide climate projections associated with different socio-economic scenarios, including the different Representative Concentration Pathways considered by CMIP5 and several scenarios from the Special Report on Emission Scenarios considered by CMIP3. Results suggest that the magnitude of global warming projections primarily depends on the socio-economic scenario considered, that there is potential for an aggressive mitigation policy to limit global warming to about two degrees, and that the behavior of some components of the climate system such as the Arctic sea ice and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation may change drastically by the end of the twenty-first century in the case of a no climate policy scenario. Although the magnitude of regional temperature and precipitation changes depends fairly linearly on the magnitude of the projected global warming (and thus on the scenario considered), the geographical pattern of these changes is strikingly similar for the different scenarios. The representation of atmospheric physical processes in the model is shown to strongly influence the simulated climate variability and both the magnitude and pattern of the projected climate changes.

We explore the use of seismic noise produced by rivers to monitor the bed load transport in the case of a low-discharge braided river in the French Alps: the "torrent de St Pierre". For this purpose, we deployed two dedicated seismic networks during summers 2007 and 2008, for which the characteristics of the recorded continuous signal are similar despite changes in the sensor locations. For dry weather conditions, only melting of nearby glaciers controls the supply of water to the stream. In these conditions, the river hydrology and the seismic energy in the 2-80 Hz frequency band both follow a diurnal fluctuation similar to the thermal amplitude. In contrast during rainfall episodes, the temperature variation fails to explain the hydrodynamic changes. Dense cloud covers reduce glacier melting and the recorded seismic energy denotes bursts of high-frequency seismic noise well correlated with water level data. Comparisons between the recorded seismic signals and the collected hydrological and sediment load data indicate that a frequency band of 3-9 Hz best explains the water level changes and thus the seismic waves coming from the flow turbulence. These analyses also reveal the presence of a seismic noise threshold that might be linked to the water shear stress exerted by the flowing water. Using the seismic energy in this frequency band as a proxy of the fluvial shear stress, the seismic-hydrologic relationship may be sensitive to variations in bed load transport. The spectral content of the seismic energy shows patterns consistent with the mobilization of sediment particles. From the interpretations of the seismic wave attenuation of river sources, we finally propose that stations at a distance from the stream less than 50 m are able to record most sediment particles. Farther stations are still useful during extreme events when largest grain sizes are mobilized. More generally this study demonstrates the feasibility of using the river seismic signal to survey bed load transport in various river types from small braided mountain rivers like the "torrent de St Pierre" to the large entrenched Himalayan rivers.

The international symposium on «Urban Growth and Natural Hazards, in particular in Developing Countries» was held in the University Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand (France) on December 2 and 3, 1994. This meeting brought together about 70 research people, Ph.D. students, and professionals from France and 12 countries, representing universities, research agencies, as well as government and private companies. The symposium aimed to gather specialized people who are engaged and acting in programmes on hazard appraisal, risk prevention and urban management in city environment. These people aimed to compare experiences acquired in two different fields: on the one hand urban growth and its consequences, and on the other hand, natural hazards and effects, in particular in Developing Countries.Half-way through the International Decade for Natural Hazard Disaster Reduction, we strove to reconcile two points of view usually distincts: nature-oriented research and society-oriented research on hazards. These convergent approaches should merge, not only to improve knowledge of natural hazards and risks, but also to cope with hazard and risk situation on a day-basis in a city. We also choose to study both approaches in Developing Countries (DC) because most of the large cities of the world already are or will be located there in near future. In addition, city location in DC coincides with tropical areas where natural hazards are most frequent threats to life, in particular in mountains, on seashores, and on active convergent plate margins. We stress the fact that the 3 following topics are often lacking in studies which have been carried out on natural hazard appraisal and management. 1) How should we include social and economical factors, and particularly a sound analysis of vulnerability of people and values at risk ? 2) How should we cope with hazard management in large cities of Developing Countries ? 3) What is the specific task of research people in hazard case studies engaged in urban environment and management?Three themes correspond to the three sessions of the symposium. (1) Natural hazards and environmental factors : inventory, diagnostic and classification, (2) Vulnerability of urban society and environment : concepts, approaches, and classification, (3) Tools for urban risk prevention and risk management in case of crisis and catastrophes.
Ce numéro de la Revue de Géographie Alpine reprend une dizaine parmi les 41 contributions exposées par des chercheurs français et étrangers lors du colloque international « Croissance urbaine et risques naturels dans les pays en développement » qui s'est déroulé à l'Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, les 2 et 3 décembre 1994. L'objectif général du colloque était de rassembler les diverses compétences existant en France et à l'étranger dans le domaine de l'évaluation et de la gestion des risques naturels et de confronter les expériences acquises à l'interface entre les villes en croissance et le champ d'action des phénomènes naturels créateurs de risques. Le colloque a donc réuni des chercheurs, des doctorants et des praticiens français et leurs collègues étrangers chargés de prévention, de gestion des risques naturels et de gestion urbaine, principalement dans les grandes villes des pays en développement (P.E.D.).Parvenus à mi-chemin de la Décennie Internationale pour la Prévention des Catastrophes Naturelles, nous avons porté des regards croisés sur les approches naturalistes et sociologiques des risques naturels. Il est maintenant nécessaire de faire converger ces approches, non seulement dans la connaissance des menaces et des risques, mais dans la gestion du risque quotidien en milieu urbain. Nous avons concentré ces approches dans les pays en développement ; en effet, le site de leurs grandes villes coïncide souvent avec le champ d'action des phénomènes naturels générateurs de risques, notamment dans la zone intertropicale et en particulier dans les marges continent ales actives (par exemple autour du Pacifique).Nous avons porté l'accent sur 3 points principaux, qui semblent en partie faire défaut dans les études et les méthodes actuellement mises en oeuvre dans la gestion des risques naturels : 1) comment prendre en compte les aspects socio-économiques, en particulier les types d'analyse des vulnérabilités ? 2) comment aborder la gestion des risques en milieu urbain dans les P.E.D. ? 3) quel rôle doit jouer le chercheur en Sciences de l'Homme, de la Société et de la Terre dans les analyses, les expertises consacrées aux risques et surtout dans leur gestion globale, à la charnière des sociétés citadines précaires et des milieux « naturels » contraignants ?Les contributions ont été regroupées, exposées et discutées lors du colloque sous forme de 3 thèmes. (1) Les phénomènes naturels créateurs de dommages (= menaces) : diagnostic, inventaire et typologie, (2) Les vulnérabilités des sociétés et des espaces urbanisés : concepts, typologie et modes d'analyse, (3) Les outils d'aide à la prévention et à la gestion du risque en milieu urbain.

The published literature related to distributed parameter systems theory is quite large, and it is not feasible in a single book to give a detailed review on the wide historical development of all of it. Our choice of what to cover was motivated by the following consideration. Since distributed parameter systems evolve in time and space, the research investigations on their analysis and control focus on considering the whole system domain for any study. We feel strongly that within this research field, animportant consideration was missing; that of considering that the system may give raise to prescribed subdomains (regions) where one has to achieve an objective. This is the case of so many applications ranging from engineering to life sciences. For that reason, covering classical prerequisite in analysis and control areas, we have devoted the book to the extension of the classical distributed parameter results to regional ones.Students of mathematics do not come into contacts with distributed parameter systems during their classes. They are introduced to them when they start research and often they are influenced by the knowledge and the advice of experimented scientists. This was our case at the very beginning of these research investigations in the mid 70’s. We would liketo express our special thanks to many of them and mainly late Professor Anthony J. Pritchard (University of Warwick, GB) and late Professor J.L. Lions (College de France) who were so encouraging in front of our determination in driving an academic carrier. We also express our thanks to our co-workers and research students. We wish to acknowledge the feedback from all those who took courses based on various parts of this book.This book may be used by graduate students in mathematics, engineering, physics, and even by students from other fields such as life or environmental sciences. This book may also be used as an information source for researchers and education professionals. We assume that the readers already know the basic concepts of analysis and control of distributedparameter systems.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the leucine-rich-repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene have been identified in families with autosomal dominant Parkinson's disease (ADPD), the most common of which is the p.G2019S substitution that has been found at varying frequencies worldwide. Because of the size of the LRRK2 gene, few studies have analysed the entire gene in large series of ADPD families. METHODS: We performed extensive mutation analyses of all 51 coding exons of the LRRK2 gene in index cases from 226 Parkinson's disease families compatible with autosomal dominant inheritance, mostly from France (n = 182) and North Africa (n = 14). RESULTS: We found 79 sequence variants, 29 of which were novel. Eight potentially or proven pathogenic mutations were found in 22 probands (9.7%). There were four novel amino acid substitutions that are potentially pathogenic (p.S52F, p.N363S, p.I810V, p.R1325Q) and two novel variants, p.H1216R and p.T1410M, that are probably not causative. The common p.G2019S mutation was identified in 13 probands (5.8%) including six from North Africa (43%). The known heterozygous p.R1441H and p.I1371V mutations were found in two probands each, and the p.E334K variant was identified in one single patient. Most potentially or proven pathogenic mutations were located in the functional domains of the Lrrk2 protein. CONCLUSION: This study leads us to conclude that LRRK2 mutations are a common cause of autosomal dominant Parkinson's disease in Europe and North Africa.

Résumé : SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic conditions in New Caledonia from 1990 to 1995 (drought) and their potential impact on the production. The development of this very particular process of physical and topographic differential evolution of the pond bottom under wind action (accumulation and digging) and its consequences on pond preparation is explained. This work takes a close look at the grow-out management : age and quality of post larvae, pond stocking with pre-grown animals, feed characteristics and management, water exchange management and pumping capacity, strategy on density and size of harvested animals. The results have been assessed using a distinctive tool, the "survival differential", allowing inter-pond comparisons within a site, inter-farms comparisons over pluri-annual periods of time. >From the commented farm results over a 20 year period, we could distinguish the principal factors responsible for the drop of grow-out capacity of some ponds. We have outlined a conceptual description of the different parameters leading to the decrease of survival, an epidemiological scenario and a synoptic table of the history of events and their relative severity. The study draws the hypothesis of a cumulative effect of positive factors, which could have led back to satisfying production results: a physical and biochemical restoration of pond bottoms, a modified and standardized grow-out management, an appropriate pumping capacity and the come back of adequate climatic conditions. This case study illustrates the concept of « flexibility » of the farming capacity and the sustainability of prawn farming in New Caledonia. The clear objective of this 20 year historic investigation was to get relevant information, in order to improve the understanding on the "summer syndrome" which hits two farms at the moment, and to participate in the hypothesis under study by the DAC (2005). We also tried to make the new farmers aware of the fragility of the pond ecosystem, and give some common-sense advices in the hope that such problems will not happen again in other places.
La ferme de SODACAL, conçue à l'origine comme une ferme de démonstration pour le développement d'une filière d'aquaculture exportatrice de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie a connu une phase de croissance exponentielle de sa production de 1984 à 1992 (jusqu'à 400 t/an), puis une chute brutale en 1993 (250 t/an) qui s'est prolongée jusqu'en 1997 et enfin une reprise à partir de 1998 pour arriver à une stabilisation autour de 420 t/an depuis 1999. L'étude inventorie les dysfonctionnements observés avant et pendant la crise de production. Parmi ceux-ci sont évoqués les épisodes de mortalité de crevettes, d'autres désordres biologiques (décollements de tapis benthique et « hécatombes » de crabes et de poissons), l'état délétère des fonds (sédiments réduits et odeur d'hydrogène sulfuré). Elle permet notamment de montrer que des épisodes de mortalité typiques du Syndrome 93 pouvaient être observés sur cette ferme dès 1990. L'étude met en évidence les conditions climatiques remarquables qui ont sévi en Nouvelle-Calédonie de 1990 à 1995 (sécheresse) et leur impact probable sur les élevages. La genèse du phénomène très particulier d'évolution physique et topographique des fonds des bassins par l'effet du vent (accumulation et creusement) et des conséquences sur la préparation des bassins est explicitée. Ce travail aborde la gestion zootechnique : l'âge et la « qualité » des post larves, la pratique des ensemencements à partir d'animaux pré grossis, la gestion de l'alimentation et la nature de la provende, le contrôle du renouvellement d'eau et la capacité de pompage, le choix des densités et du calibre des animaux récoltés. Les résultats ont pu être évalués à travers un outil original «le différentiel de survie », permettant des comparaisons inter-bassins au sein du site, inter-fermes à des périodes pluri annuelles distinctes. A partir des résultats commentés de la ferme obtenus sur 20 années, on a pu distinguer les principaux facteurs qui ont provoqué cette chute d'aptitude culturale de certains bassins. Un schéma conceptuel des différents paramètres ayant conduit à la baisse des survies, un scénario épidémiologique ainsi qu'un tableau synoptique de la chronologie des évènements et de leur relative sévérité sont esquissés. Le rapport ébauche l'hypothèse d'un cumul de causes favorables qui ont permis le retour à des résultats zootechniques satisfaisants : une réhabilitation physique et biochimique des fonds de bassins, une zootechnie modifiée et standardisée, une capacité de pompage adéquate et une climatologie de nouveau favorable. Cette étude de cas permet ainsi d'illustrer les notions d « élasticité » de l'aptitude culturale et de durabilité de la crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Le but de cette enquête historique sur 20 ans est l'acquisition d'informations pertinentes permettant d'améliorer la compréhension du « Syndrome d'été » qui affecte actuellement deux fermes de production et ainsi aider à compléter le scénario hypothétique avancé par le Dac (2005). Enfin, au travers de cet historique, on a cherché également à sensibiliser les nouveaux opérateurs de la filière sur la fragilité de l'écosystème-bassin et présenter quelques conseils de bon sens pour éviter que de tels phénomènes ne se reproduisent ailleurs.

Background: Neonatal infection constitutes one of Senegal’s most important public health problems, with amortality rate of 41 deaths per 1,000 live births.Methods: Between January 2007 and March 2008, 242 neonates with suspected infection were recruited at threeneonatal intensive care units in three major tertiary care centers in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Neonatal infections wereconfirmed by positive bacterial blood or cerebrospinal fluid culture. The microbiological pattern of neonatal infectionsand the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates were characterized. In addition, the genetic basis for antibiotic resistanceand the genetic background of third-generation cephalosporin-resistant (3GC-R) Enterobacteriaceae were studied.Results: A bacteriological infection was confirmed in 36.4 % (88/242) of neonates: 22.7 % (30/132) during the early-onsetand 52.7 % (58/110) during the late-onset periods (p > 0.20). Group B streptococci accounted for 6.8 % of the 88 collectedbacterial isolates, while most of them were Enterobacteriaceae (n = 69, 78.4 %). Of these, 55/69 (79.7 %) were 3GC-R. TheblaCTX-M-15 allele, the blaSHV and the blaTEM were highly prevalent (63.5, 65.4 and 53.8 %, respectively), usually associatedwith qnr genes (65.4 %). Clonally related strains of 3GC-R Klebsiella pneumoniae and 3GC-R Enterobacter cloacae, the twomost commonly recovered 3GC-R Enterobacteriaceae (48/55), were detected at the three hospitals, underlining the roleof cross-transmission in their spread. The overall case fatality rate was 18.6 %.Conclusions:Measures should be taken to prevent nosocomial infections and the selection of resistant bacteria
