Effect of an herbivorous diet on energy balance of Litopenaeus vannamei at selected ontogenetic stages Auteur(s) : Maldonado, Carlos Cuzon, Gerard Guzman, Emilio Brito, Roberto Soto, Luis Arena, Leticia Gaxiola, Gabriela Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Herbivorous (20% vegetable protein, 40% carbohydrate) and carnivorous diets (40% marine animal protein, 20% carbohydrate) were experimentally tested to assess their effect on the energy balance and energetic substrates utilized by postlarvae (PL's /15 days) and juvenile shrimp (3-6 g) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Postlarval stage 60 (PL60, early juveniles) shrimps fed HeD and CaD diets, then late juveniles (3-6 g) acclimated to the same diets were tested for their respective energy partitioning potential. No significant differences (p>0.05) on growth were obtained in early juveniles (mean final wet weight of 0.19 g). However in late juvenile stages a significant difference (p<0.05) in growth rate was observed. In terms of energy partitioning, both early and late juveniles seem to spend more energy in respiratory metabolism than in the elimination of excretion products. A change in feed composition based on quality protein sources induced some modifications on shrimp's activity measured by heat increment. Shrimps fed with an herbivorous diet showed a higher heat increment. Interestingly, the early stages of L vannamei display a remarkable capacity to assimilate a plant protein-based and a high carbohydrate level diet. Such capacity with a stimulation of genes would lead to a good adaptation of juveniles receiving all-plant diets to sustain growth performances up to a marketable size. Le merlu du golfe de Gascogne et de la mer Celtique : Croissance, Répartition spatiale et bathymétrique, Ecologie alimentaire et Assemblages Auteur(s) : Kacher, Mohamed Éditeur(s) : Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale (Dunkerque) Résumé : In the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea waters, hake is considered as genetically homogeneous and form a unique stock with identical meristic characteristics. The vertebral mean vary from 50,68 (vertebrae) during the first year of life to 51,11 (vertebrae) for adults. 0-group Merluccius display a rapid growth with significant interannual variability (0.71 mm.day-1 in 2001 versus 0.74 mm.day-1 in 2002). The spawning period occurs in April and the average length on the firth January following the hatching is of 17.3 cm (first seasonal check / increment on the sagittal otolith is located about 0.143 cm from the nucleus). At the end of the first year of life the average length is about 24 cm. The longevity of the species is important and growth parameters (L = 138,24 cm ; K = 0,132) explain natural mortality coefficient of M = 0.21. No difference for growth between male and female has been observed for this stock. The ratio total weight / eviscerated weight is equal to Fc = 1,086. Both male and female have same spatial and bathymetric distribution. Juveniles are found in deep waters (< 17 cm length) and move to coastal waters where they display an average length of (33 cm length). Longer individuals are found in nursery areas where they feed and grow then move to deeper areas to spawn. Nursery areas are numerous and located in the Celtic Sea and in the bay of Biscay. In the bay of Biscay, disturbances resulted from hydrondynamics affect the settlement on the nursery grounds particularly in the southern part of the bay. Diet composition varies with age. Juveniles feed mainly on crustaceans (Euphausia kroni). At the length of 23 cm, individuals feed strictly on fishes. Sizes of preys are proportional with sizes of predators and preys are composed mainly of species that feed and reproduce close to the bottom. Cannibalism has been observed for this specie, and increases with age notably in the northern part of the bay of Biscay and in the Celtic Sea. Main preys are 0-group juveniles. This specie is assumed to be a passive predator catching its preys when they come to feed in the bottom. Although they are punctual, these results have been obtained after studies on the evolution of sizes during the first year of life (daily increments measurements) and on the spawning period parameters (back-calculating). Average length on the firth January following hatching and the position of the first seasonal check on the otolith are based on observations of the sizes on the firth January following hatching (obtained with growth rates and spawning period parameters). The results are similar to those described in previous studies, nevertheless they have to be confirmed with growth and diet composition analyses. A long term study appear essential to determine biological and ecological parameters of this species for sustainable management of the stock. Les alertes quant à la surexploitation du stock de merlu européen sont nombreuses et récurrentes. Seulement l'estimation du niveau réel de l'état du stock a toujours posé des problèmes du fait de certaines lacunes dans la connaissance de la biologie et de l'écologie de cette espèce. Dans les eaux du golfe de Gascogne et de la mer Celtique, le merlu européen fait partie de la même population génétique et possède les mêmes caractéristiques meristiques. Sa moyenne vertébrale est de 50,68 durant sa première année de vie et évolue pour se stabiliser à 51,11 chez l'adulte. La croissance du merlu durant sa première année de vie et très rapide mais présente une variabilité interannuelle significative (0,71 mm .J-1 en 2001 et 0,74 mm .J-1 en 2002). Sa période de ponte maximale se déroule au mois d'avril et sa longueur au premier janvier suivant sa naissance est de 17,3 cm (la première marque hivernale est positionnée à 0,143 cm du nucléus de la sagittae). Au terme de sa première année de vie le merlu atteint une longueur de 24 cm. Sa longévité est assez longue (23 ans environ) et ses paramètres de croissance (L = 138,24 cm ; K = 0,132) permettent d'estimer son coefficient de mortalité naturelle à M = 0,21. Il n'a pas été établi de croissance différentielle entre sexe chez le merlu dans ces eaux. Le rapport poids total / poids éviscéré a été estimé à Fc = 1,086. Mâles ou femelles, les merlus ont une même répartition spatiale et bathymétrique. En général, ils sont très profonds à leurs stades juvéniles (< 17 cm) et ils se dirigent vers les eaux côtières pour les atteindre à 33 cm de longueur environ. Au-delà de cette taille, les merlus se concentrent au niveau des zones de nourricerie pour s'y alimenter avant de rejoindre les eaux plus profondes pour y pondre. Les zones de nourricerie du merlu sont très nombreuses et sont localisées en mer Celtique et dans le golfe de Gascogne aussi bien dans sa partie sud que dans sa partie nord. Les perturbations importantes dans l'hydrodynamisme du golfe de Gascogne (upwelling) semble influencer les niveaux de colonisation des zones de nourricerie notamment celles situées dans la partie sud du golfe. Le régime alimentaire du merlu évolue avec l'âge. Juvénile, il se nourrit principalement de crustacés (Euphausia krohni) et devient ichtyophage exclusif dès 23 cm de longueur. Le cannibalisme est une réalité chez le merlu et les merlus-proies sont les juvéniles du groupe d'âge G-0. Il s'intensifie avec l'âge notamment dans la partie nord du golfe de Gascogne et en mer Celtique ; Il est très faible dans le sud du golfe de Gascogne. La taille des proies évolue avec la taille du merlu et les poissons proies sont en général des espèces qui vont se nourrir ou se reproduire sur le fond. Ce comportement alimentaire fait que le merlu est un prédateur peu actif et qui attaque ses proies lorsqu'elles viennent sur le fond. Ces résultats, bien qu'ils ne soient que ponctuels, ont été obtenus après avoir déterminé le schéma d'évolution de la longueur du merlu durant sa première année de vie (dénombrement des accroissement journaliers) et des paramètres de sa période de ponte (rétro-calcul).La taille au premier hiver et la position de la première marque hivernale ont été déterminées en relativisant nos observations à l'estimation de la longueur du merlu au premier janvier suivant sa naissance : celle-ci étant obtenue en utilisant le taux de croissance et les paramètres de la période de ponte. Bien que l'ensemble des résultats obtenus, en ce qui concerne la répartition spatiale et les données sur la période de ponte, soient généralement conformes à ceux décrits dans la littérature, il est nécessaire de confirmer ceux concernant la croissance et le régime alimentaire. Pour cela, une étude à plus long terme semble indispensable pour parvenir à bien maîtriser l'ensemble des paramètres de biologie et d'écologie du merlu permettant ainsi une meilleure gestion de son stock. Biometrie et Croissance des Jeunes Crevettes Trachypenaeus de la Guadeloupe (Antilles Francaises). The examination of these relations yields few differences between the two species. A growth curve was established according to the sequences of modal values; these were determined according to weekly size frequency distributions over three different periods of time. In the zone studied, the growth of young Trachypenaeus is more rapid than that of the young Penaeus. Experimental evaluation of co-culture of juvenile sea cucumbers, Holothuria scabra (Jaeger), with juvenile blue shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) Auteur(s) : Purcell, S Patrois, Jacques Fraisse, N Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : The co-culture of juvenile sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger), or 'sandfish', with juvenile blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) was tested by growing groups in co-culture and monoculture for 3 weeks in tanks with enriched sand substratum. Feed was supplied on trays, accessible only to shrimp. Survival of shrimp and sandfish was high in all treatments (73-100%). Growth of shrimp did not differ between monoculture and co-culture, but sandfish grew significantly slower in co-culture (P=0.03), although their sand burying and surface foraging were apparently unaffected by shrimp (P=0.76). However, shrimp increased the levels of total ammonia-N in tanks, which related inversely with sandfish growth (P=0.04). Conversely, sandfish did not appear to lower the water quality for shrimp culture. While sandfish bioturbate sediments and eat organic deposits, the juveniles did not significantly reduce the organic content of sand in tanks. Co-culturing juveniles of the two species in earthen ponds appears feasible, with no detriment to shrimp production, presenting a cost-effective method for growing sandfish to larger sizes for restocking. These findings underpin further studies to test the viability of commercial co-culture of sandfish with blue shrimp at later stages in the production cycle of shrimp. Individuals and species with high SLA, low wood density and small seeds tend to have faster growth rates.[br/][br/][b]2.[/b] If community-level relationships between traits and growth have general predictive value, then similar relationships should also be observed in analyses that integrate across taxa, biogeographic regions and environments. Such global consistency would imply that traits could serve as valuable proxies for the complex suite of factors that determine growth rate, and, therefore, could underpin a new generation of robust dynamic vegetation models. Alternatively, growth rates may depend more strongly on the local environment or growth–trait relationships may vary along environmental gradients.[br/][br/][b]3.[/b] We tested these alternative hypotheses using data on 27 352 juvenile trees, representing 278 species from 27 sites on all forested continents, and extensive functional trait data, 38% of which were obtained at the same sites at which growth was assessed. Data on potential evapotranspiration (PET), which summarizes the joint ecological effects of temperature and precipitation, were obtained from a global data base.[br/][br/][b]4.[/b] We estimated size-standardized relative height growth rates (SGR) for all species, then related them to functional traits and PET using mixed-effect models for the fastest growing species and for all species together.[br/][br/][b]5.[/b] Both the mean and 95th percentile SGR were more strongly associated with functional traits than with PET. PET was unrelated to SGR at the global scale. SGR increased with increasing SLA and decreased with increasing wood density and seed mass, but these traits explained only 3.1% of the variation in SGR. SGR–trait relationships were consistently weak across families and biogeographic zones, and over a range of tree statures. Thus, the most widely studied functional traits in plant ecology were poor predictors of tree growth over large scales.[br/][br/][b]6.[/b] Synthesis. We conclude that these functional traits alone may be unsuitable for predicting growth of trees over broad scales. Determining the functional traits that predict vital rates under specific environmental conditions may generate more insight than a monolithic global relationship can offer. However, fossilised ontogenies of early vertebrates are extremely rare during the Palaeozoic Era. A growth series of the Late Devonian ''acanthodian'' Triazeugacanthus affinis, from the Miguasha Fossil-Fish Lagerstätte, is identified as one of the best known early vertebrate fossilised ontogenies given the exceptional preservation, the large size range, and the abundance of specimens. Morphological, morphometric, histological and chemical data are gathered on a growth series of Triazeugacanthus ranging from 4 to 52 mm in total length. The developmental trajectory of this Devonian ''acanthodian'' is characteristic of fishes showing a direct development with alternating steps and thresholds. Larvae show no squamation but a progressive appearance of cartilaginous neurocranial and vertebral elements, and appendicular elements, whereas juveniles progress in terms of ossification and squamation. The presence of cartilaginous and bony tissues, discriminated on histological and chemical signatures, shows a progressive mineralisation of neurocranial and vertebral elements. Comparison among different body proportions for larvae, juveniles and adults suggest allometric growth in juveniles. Because of the phylogenetic position of ''acanthodians'', Triazeugacanthus ontogeny informs us about deep time developmental conditions in gnathostomes. In order to characterize Basralocus clump organisation, many approaches were used : the study of different forest variables (total height, diameter at breast height, .... j, a spatial analysis studied by population splitting in 3 classes according to their diameters at breast height and an architectural analysis. To evaluate the pertinence of different approach, 2 clump structures, located on control and logged plots,are compared. The trees of the logged clump have a smaller height and diameter. a slender habit, a taller crown and a better growth than the control. These 2 clumps stand out by a different number of mature trees and different types of spatial distribution of juvenile trees around them are possible. The opening of the environment by forestry provokes a Jump rejuvenation by the presence of numerous unbranched young trees. The architectural analysis helps to detect a large expression variability in growth strategies which can be reflected by different architectural vigours. The combination between forest variables, spatial and architectural analysis results could suggest a dynamic evolution of these 2 clumps. L'Angélique (Dicorynia guianensis Amshoff, Caesalpiniaceae), première espèce exploitée Pour le bois d'oeuvre en Guyane française, a une répartition spatiale de type agrégatif. Afin de caractériser la structure d’un agrégat d'Angélique, plusieurs approches sont utilisées: une étude des différents paramètres dendrométriques (hauteur totale, diamètre à 1.30 m....j. une analyse spatiale réalisée en découpant la population des individus en 3 classes de diamètre bien distinctes et une analyse architecturale. Afin de valider la pertinence de ces approches, 2 agrégats, l'un en parcelle témoin et l'autre en parcelle exploitée pour le bois d'oeuvre, sont comparés. Ainsi, les arbres de l'agrégat exploité ont une hauteur et un diamètre plus petit, un port plus élancé, un houppier plus grand et une meilleure croissance. Ces 2 agrégats se distinguent par un nombre variable de semenciers et différents types de répartition spatiale des juvéniles autour de ceux-ci sont possibles. L'ouverture du milieu par l'exploitation forestière provoque un rajeunissement de l'agrégat souligné par la présence de nombreux individus jeunes non ramifiés. L'analyse architecturale permet de déceler une grande variabilité d'expression dans le développement qui se traduit par différentes vigueurs architecturales. Grow-out of sandfish Holothuria scabra in ponds shows that co-culture with shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris is not viable Auteur(s) : Bell, J Agudo, N Purcell, S Blazer, P Simutoga, M Pham, Dominique Della Patrona, Luc Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : We examined the potential for producing the large numbers of sandfish (Holothuria scabra) needed for restocking programmes by co-culturing juveniles with the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in earthen ponds. Our experiments in hapas within shrimp ponds were designed to detect any deleterious effects of sandfish on shrimp, and vice versa. These experiments showed that a high stocking density of juvenile sandfish had no significant effects on growth and survival of shrimp. However, survival and growth of sandfish reared with shrimp for 3 weeks were significantly lower than for sandfish reared alone. Increased stocking density of shrimp also had a significant negative effect on survival and/or growth of sandfish. A grow-out trial of juvenile sandfish in 0.2-ha earthen ponds stocked with 20 shrimp post-larvae m(-2), and densities of sandfish between 0.8 and 1.6 individuals m(-2), confirmed that co-culture is not viable. All sandfish reared in co-culture were dead or moribund after a month. However, sandfish stocked alone into 0.2-ha earthen ponds survived well and grew to mean weights of similar to 400 g within 12 months without addition of food. The grow-out trial demonstrated that there is potential for profitable pond farming of sandfish in monoculture. Large differences in energy content (15.6 to 23.6 kJ g(-1) DW) among prey types were recorded with low values found in amphipods and natantid shrimps, intermediate values in euphausiids and mysids, and high values in fish. High condition in juvenile hake was linked to the consumption of prey with high energy content. However, no difference in fish growth was observed by the analysis of otolith micro-increments. Éditeur(s) : Centre Océanologique de Bretagne Résumé : One of the criteria for selecting a shrimp of commercial interest in French Polynesia is the acceptability of artificial diet; such a criterion has been used to test Penaeus merguiensis.Experiments have been carried out in Centre Océanologique du Pacifique in Tahiti island where the water temperature range is 25-29°C, salinity 35 ppt, pH. 8.2, and photoperiod constant.Juveniles used in this study are hatched in CNEXO-COP at Vairao.It has been found that a 50-55% protein content diet gives a better growth performance. A carbohydrate such as starch appears more suitable than glucose or glucose plus starch in isonitrogenous purified diets.A vitamin mix rich in vitamin C, choline and inositol provides better results and a mineral mix with 3% magnesium reaches optimum. The major nutritional results for this species are applied to formulation of artificial diets.With the best diet, growth performances are normal: from 2.8 g to 9.0 g in 90 days, with about 60% survival rate at alow density, 20 animals/m² under strict control. But at another scale, in 400 m² graw-out tanks, growth was rather low even with an excellent Japanese diet containing 60% protein.Therefore, P. merguiensis does not appear to be a good candidate species for aquafarming in French Polynesia. Les pêcheries mixtes de langoustine et de merlu du golfe de Gascogne. Description, préparation à une modélisation et à une simulation des procédures de gestion Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Ifremer Résumé : 1 - Study's goals review The management of Norway Lobster and Hake fisheries can be considered as the most important issue in the Gascogne gulf. Calculation methods used to evaluate prediction variations under various efforts and mesh constraints all pinpoint to the crucial role narrow mesh fishing plays in Hakes' Northern stock status. The involvement of Gascogne gulf Norway Lobster fisheries regarding Hakes over exploitation seems over dimensioned when comparing the size of both of these stocks. Hake stocks spread from Northern Great Britain to Northern Spain, while Norway Lobster stocks are located in the Gascogne gulf's mud flats. The biological solution is well known and consists in globally increasing mesh nets to 80mm which would bring up Hakes yield to its most. It would be unreal to pretend all parties involved in Hake stocks will come to use them. For now, it is mostly an economical issue since many vessels continue on with an exploitation scheme dating from the 60's and fish on coastal mud flats which are the most exploited zones and where their catch is detrimental to juvenile class Hakes and Norway Lobsters. Considering our limited time, this study will cover bio- economical modelisation preparation. You will therefore find a description of fisheries and an exploitation assessment based on 1986's available data.
2 - Accomplished work
2. 1 Fishery description
Presenting the problems and preparing ulterior analyses was first and foremost. Norway Lobster vessels supposedly, according to evaluation models used, test immature Hakes in such a manner that all stock exploitation is jeopardized. Norway Lobster distribution is closely linked to the nature of the ocean floor since it can only build its habitat on fine sediment. Hakes' habitat is not as restrictive and is linked to food supply, especially euphausiid shrimps, so they can be found on sandy and sandy-sedimental floors. Norway Lobsters are sought by a fleet of 400 to 450 ships which characteristics widely vary according to their home port. On the northern part, fisheries are close to exploitation ports where Norway Lobsters and miscellaneous catch yield is sufficient to support an older fleet. On the southern part, the structure is diversified and flexibility usually rules, more modern vessels can easily switch their target on a seasonal or daily basis. Globally, Hakes' northern stocks are slightly on the rise. This rise is probably due to global mesh size increase, even if slight and a decrease on fishing effort where immature species are caught. Norway Lobster stocks unloading is stable or slightly lower and yields, as far as northern fishery are concerned, vary and oscillate between ±15 to ±20 % at about an average of 100 kg/day. Biological parameters used in the evaluations for each species are those used in CIEM and CEE work cells. Among those parameters, those describing growth are the greatest. For Hakes, an intermediary growth equation between males and females has been used. For Norway Lobsters, both sexes are treated separately. Simulations were carried out according to 3 types of data: Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort variations. Norway Lobster vessels mesh increase. Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort decrease or mesh increasing go along in the same direction for Hake and Norway Lobster stock production (chart A and B). Lastly, a brief study on results evaluation significance was done to modify: - the size of Hake rejects by Norway Lobster vessels. The range of sizes stays the same but the amount in each class varies according to the same percentage. - Norway Lobsters growth parameters, both values used (L» = 76 mm and k = 0.11 for males, L°° = 56 mm and k = 0.14 for females) representing the "high" hypothesis. In the first case, a 20% error rate for rejects evaluation with 60 mm mesh would only bring a 3% modification rate on global stock production. Those first results are contradicting usual evaluation conclusions and it will be necessary to recalculate by modifying the size class step. In the second case, to decrease L» and increase growth speed, in time production variations remain within usual inter annual fluctuations. In all figure cases, calculations confirming greater yield for in time production through hypothetical mesh size increase to 60 mm, are definitely well founded.
1 - Rappel des buts de l'étude La gestion des pêcheries de merlu et de langoustine peut être considérée comme le problème le plus important du Golfe de Gascogne. Les méthodes de calcul employées pour évaluer les variations de la production sous diverses contraintes d'effort et de maillage mettent toutes l'accent sur le rôle capital des pêcheries à petits maillages sur l'état du stock nord de merlu. Le niveau de responsabilité des pêcheries de langoustine du Golfe de Gascogne dans la surexploitation du merlu semble démesuré eu égard aux dimensions respectives des deux stocks. Le stock de merlu s'étend du Nord des Iles Britanniques au Nord de l'Espagne alors que le stock de langoustine est localisé aux vasièrés du Golfe de Gascogne. La solution biologique du problème est connue et tient à une augmentation généralisée des maillages à 80 mm qui amènerait le rendement du stock de merlu à son maximum. Il serait illusoire de prétendre que tous les acteurs opérant sur le stock de merlu arriveront jamais à l'utiliser. Pour le moment, le problème se pose essentiellement en termes économiques car beaucoup de navires poursuivent un schéma d'exploitation hérité des années 1960 et pèchent sur des vasièrés côtières qui sont les zones les plus exploitées et où ils effectuent leurs captures au détriment des jeunes classes d'âge de merlu et de langoustine. En raison des délais impartis, cette étude constitue la préparation à une modélisation bioéconomique. On y trouvera donc une description des pêcheries et un bilan de l'exploitation sur les données disponibles en 1986. 2 - Travaux effectués 2 . 1 Description de la pêcherie Il s'agissait avant tout de poser les problèmes et de préparer les analyses ultérieures. Les langoustiniers sont présumés, d'après les modèles d'évaluation employés, effectuer sur les immatures de merlu des prélèvements tels qu'ils mettent en danger toute l'exploitation du stock. La distribution de la langoustine est très liée à la nature du fond car elle ne peut construire son terrier que sur des fonds de vase fine. Celle du merlu est beaucoup plus large et inféodée à la recherche de nourriture, crevettes euphausiacées en particulier, on le trouve donc sur les fonds sableux à sablo-vaseux. La langoustine est recherchée par une flottille de 400 à 450 bateaux dont les caractéristiques sont très variables suivant leur appartenance géographique. Au nord, la pêcherie est proche des ports exploitants et les rendements en langoustine et en prise accessoire sont suffisants pour faire vivre une flottille ancienne. Vers le sud, la structure est très diversifiée et la flexibilité est généralement la règle et les navires de construction récente peuvent changer de cible aisément de façon saisonnière ou au cours de la même journée de pêche. Globalement, les débarquements de merlu du stock nord sont en légère hausse. Ce redressement est dû probablement aux augmentations de maillage, même légères, généralisées et à une baisse de l'effort sur les pêcheries où s'effectuent des captures d'immatures. Les débarquements de langoustine sont stables ou en légère baisse et les rendements, au moins sur la pêcherie du nord, varient avec des oscillations de ±15 à ±20 % autour d'une moyenne de 100 kg/jour. Les paramètres biologiques utilisés pour chaque espèce dans les évaluations sont ceux en usage dans les groupes de travail du CIEM et de la CEE. Parmi ces paramètres, ceux décrivant la croissance sont les plus importants. Pour le merlu une équation de croissance intermédiaire entre mâles et femelles a été utilisée. Pour la langoustine les deux sexes sont traitées séparément. Les simulations ont porté sur trois types de données : Variations de l'effort des langoustiniers Augmentation du maillage des langoustiniers La diminution de l'effort des langoustiniers ou L'augmentation de maillage agisse très exactement dans le même sens sur la production des stocks de merlu et de langoustine. Enfin une étude succincte de la sensibilité des résultats des évaluations a été effectuée pour des modifications : - de la composition en taille des rejets de merlu par les langoustiniers. L'étendue des tailles reste la même mais le nombre dans chaque classe varie selon le même pourcentage. des paramètres de croissance de la langoustine, le couple de valeurs utilisées (L» = 76 mm et k = 0.11 pour les mâles, L°° = 56 mm et k = 0.14 pour les femelles) constituant l'hypothèse "haute" Dans le premier cas, une erreur de 20 % sur l'évaluation des rejets pour un cnaillage de 60 mm n'apporterait qu'une modification de 3 % dans la production globale du stock. Ces premiers résultats sont en contradiction avec les conclusions habituelles des évaluations et il sera nécessaire de reprendre les calculs en modifiant le pas des classes de taille. Dans le deuxième cas, pour une diminution de L» et une augmentation de la vitesse de croissance, les variations de la production à terme restent à l'intérieur des fluctuations interannuelles habituelles. Dans tous les cas de figure, les calculs confirmant l'augmentation de la production à terme dans l'hypothèse d'une augmentation de maillage à 60 mm sont d'une robustesse à toute épreuve. Survival rate in FLOC and clear water were recorded and a probiotic was tested under both conditions. Daily growth rate (DGR) was higher in FLOC (p < 0.05) than in CW. Survival in each system increased significantly when a probiotic was included in the diet (p < 0.05). The Vibrionaceae community from the hepatopancreas (HP) and the culture medium did not differ between the two culture media. Nevertheless, a novel group of Vibrio strains was found to be unique to FLOC. No high level of lesions was observed in shrimp tissues from the FLOC + probiotic treatment; it suggests that the probiotic contributed to homeostasis and prevented outbreak of opportunistic pathogenic species. Cross breeding of different domesticated lines as a simple way for genetic improvement in small aquaculture industries: Heterosis and inbreeding effects on growth and survival rates of the Pacific blue shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus) stylirostris Auteur(s) : Goyard, Emmanuel Goarant, Cyrille Ansquer, Dominique Brun, Pierre De Decker, Sophie Dufour, Robert Galinie, C Peignon, Jean-marie Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Two populations of the Latin American shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus)stylirostris domesticated in Hawaii and in New Caledonia were previously shown to be genetically differentiated and proven highly inbred. In New Caledonia, where different Vibriosis affect shrimp production and antibiotic use is banned in growing ponds, the Hawaiian population was introduced to increase the allelic variability available for local shrimp farmers and start a genetic improvement program. Growth and survival rates of the two pure populations and the two-way F-1-hybrids obtained by breeding Hawaiian animals with New Caledonian animals were assessed in several simple experiments (earthen ponds, floating cages and experimental infection challenges) during two years on two successive generations. Results were very consistent: F-1-hybrids growth rates in earthen ponds were 37% (+/-7% SD) higher than for pure populations. Cage experiments demonstrated no competition between the different populations when reared together or separately in a common environment. The F-1-hybrids also showed better survival rates in all experiments. Combining the results on growth and survival rates leads to the conclusion that biomass production is much higher with F-1-hybrid populations than with pure populations using the same quantity of juveniles stocked: biomass production in ponds was increased 1.4 and 2.3 times on year I and year 2 respectively, and 1.9 times in floating cages. The advantage of growing F-1-hybrids appeared proportionally higher when environmental and sanitary conditions led to poorer survival (34% in year 2 vs. 56% in year 1). These results are a good example of performance improvement by heterosis effect and/or of performance loss due to inbreeding in the pure populations. This study demonstrates that aquaculture industries which cannot afford large selection programs may benefit from using two different inbred parental stocks to produce F-1-hybrids for each commercial growout. This is notably true when only inbred populations are available, or when introduction of genetic variability from the wild or from other genetic resources represents a zoo-sanitary risk. In our case, the expected increase in L stylirostris production could be around 85% (according to our average results) if producers keep stocking their ponds at their current densities using F-1-hybrids. However, for sustainability reasons, it is advisable to stock F-1-hybrid animals at lower densities, the gain in performance allowing producing the same amount of biomass with less input. Les capacités osmorégulatrices chez la crevette bleue Litopenaeus stylirostris, au cours de l’ontogenèse Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Université de la Polynésie Française Résumé : The ontogeny of osmoregulation was studied in the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in New Caledonia. The implication of branchial organs in ionic regulation was first demonstrated in juveniles by immunolocalization of three ion transporting proteins ( namely NKA, co-transporter NKCC1 and CFTR ) and ionocyte detection was done by means of electron microscopy. The role of the main ion transporting enzyme, NKA, was subsequently investigated during post-embryonic development using an integrative approach associating physiological, histological, immunological and biomolecular studies. Results obtained allowed us to propose a model of the osmoregulatory pattern in L. stylirostris based on weak regulation in the early stages, then progressively this species acquires the adult pattern of hyper-hypo-regulation after metamorphosis with the concurrent development of epipodites and gills. Strong NKA immunofluorescence and abundance of NKA transcripts in these two tissues compared to others organs suggest their functional implication in osmoregulatory processes. The results of this study allow us to increase our knowledge of the penaeid shrimp osmoregulation and to propose zootechnical measures to improve the animal physiological comfort. These propositions have been already tested during larval rearing trials, leading a two-fold-growth in 19 days-old postlarvae. L’étude de l’ontogenèse de l’osmorégulation a été entreprise chez la crevette bleue Litopenaeus stylirostris en Nouvelle-Calédonie. L’implication des tissus de la cavité branchiale dans la régulation ionique a été déterminée au préalable chez des juvéniles par immunolocalisation de trois transporteurs protéiques d’ions, ( la NKA, le co-transporteur NKCC1 et le CFTR ) et par la détection de ionocytes en microscopie électronique. Le rôle de la NKA a été particulièrement étudié et son implication a été examinée au cours du développement post-embryonnaire par une approche intégrative associant des études physiologiques, histologiques, immunologiques et moléculaires. Cette démarche nous a permis de proposer un modèle d’osmorégulation chez L. stylirostris: de faible régulatrice dans les premiers jours de sa vie, cette espèce évolue vers l’hyper-hypo-régulation après la métamorphose avec le développement progressif des épipodites et des branchies. L’immunofluorescence prononcée de la NKA ainsi que l’abondance des transcrits du gène codant la NKA dans les tissus de ces deux organes suggèrent leur implication fonctionnelle dans l’ionorégulation. Les résultats de ce travail nous ont permis d’accroître nos connaissances sur l’osmorégulation chez les pénéidés et de proposer des améliorations zootechniques visant à augmenter leur confort physiologique. This rarity makes it difficult to describe early vertebrate growth patterns and processes in extinct taxa. Indeed, only a few growth series of complete Palaeozoic fishes are available; however, they allow the growth of isolated elements to be described and individual growth from these isolated elements to be inferred. In addition, isolated and in situ scales are generally abundant and well-preserved, and bring information on (1) their morphology and structure relevant to phylogenetic relationships and (2) individual growth patterns and processes relative to species ontogeny. The Late Devonian acanthodian Triazeugacanthus affinis from the Miguasha Fossil-Lagerstä tte preserves one of the best known fossilised ontogenies of early vertebrates because of the exceptional preservation, the large size range, and the abundance of complete specimens. Here, we present morphological, histological, and chemical data on scales from juvenile and adult specimens (scales not being formed in lar-vae). Histologically, Triazeugacanthus scales are composed of a basal layer of acellular bone housing Sharpey's fibers, a mid-layer of mesodentine, and a superficial layer of ganoine. Developmentally, scales grow first through concentric addition of mesodentine and bone around a central primordium and then through superposition of ganoine layers. Onto-genetically, scales form first in the region below the dorsal fin spine, then squamation spreads anteriorly and posteriorly, and on fin webs. Phylogenetically, Triazeugacanthus scales show similarities with acanthodians (e.g. " box-in-box " growth), chondrichthyans (e.g. squamation pattern), and actinopterygians (e.g. ganoine). Scale histology and growth are interpreted in the light of a new phylogenetic analysis of gnathostomes supporting acantho-dians as stem chondrichthyans. This industry is based on 19 production farms but also four hatcheries, two feed production units and two packing plants. The maximum production was reached in 2005 with 2400 tons. Supply of juveniles by hatchery is the bottle neck of the production chain because this species is not present in the natural environment. Recent problems of larval survival led some scientists to work on eco-physiology to propose adaptations of larval rearing protocol. Salinity of the rearing environment is taken as an example to study the influence of abiotic parameters on the animal physiology according to its development stage.
The influence of salinity on survival and growth was evaluated at different development stages in Litopenaeus stylirostris. The study showed that ocean salinity (33-35 ppt) should be maintained during the larval stage, but after the post-larval metamorphosis, better growth could be achieved by lowering the salinity gradually to 27 ppt. This measure is now applied routinely in the Saint Vincent's hatchery and is the result of research in eco-physiology showing that the blue shrimp iso-osmotic point is around 27 ppt. La crevette bleue calédonienne Litopenaeus stylirostris est au deuxième rang des produits exportés en Nouvelle-Calédonie. L’industrie crevetticole calédonienne est basée sur 19 fermes de production mais également 4 écloseries, 2 provendiers et 2 usines de conditionnement. La production maximale a été atteinte en 2005 avec 2400 tonnes. La fourniture de juvéniles par les écloseries est le point crucial de la chaîne de production car cette espèce n’est pas présente dans le milieu naturel. Les récents problèmes de survie larvaire ont orienté une partie de la recherche vers l’éco-physiologie en vue de proposer des adaptations du protocole d’élevage. La salinité du milieu d’élevage est prise comme exemple pour étudier l’influence d’un paramètre abiotique sur la physiologie de l’animal en fonction de son stade de développement. L’influence de la salinité sur la survie et la croissance a été évaluée aux différents stades de développement chez Litopenaeus stylirostris. L'étude a permis de montrer que la salinité océanique (33-35 ppt) devait être maintenue durant la phase larvaire mais qu'après la métamorphose en post-larve, une meilleure croissance pouvait être obtenue en abaissant la salinité progressivement à 27 ppt. Cette mesure est maintenant appliquée en routine en élevage larvaire à l'écloserie de Saint-Vincent et découle des recherches menées en éco-physiologie qui situe le point iso-osmotique de la crevette bleue autour de 27 ppt. Feed intake, molt frequency, tissue growth, feed efficiency and energy budget during a molt cycle of mud crab juveniles, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), fed on different practical diets with graded levels of soy protein concentrate as main source of protein Auteur(s) : Nguyen, Ngoc Thi Bich Chim, Liet Lemaire, Pierrette Wantiez, Laurent Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : There has been growing interest in the development of mud crab aquaculture in New Caledonia. However, for this to become established at a commercial level, a cost-effective formulated feed based on internationally-available ingredients needs to be developed. We have evaluated the optimal dietary protein content for juvenile crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), using a series of diets with a protein content ranging from 27 to 49% and soy protein concentrate (SPC) as the main protein source. For this purpose, 54 individually housed crabs were allocated to five dietary treatments (n = 10 or 11). The crabs were fed ad libitum, for 81 days with the allocated diets. The apparent digestibilities of dry mater, crude protein and energy were high (96.2-97.3%), irrespective of the diet. The voluntary feed intake (VFI) of crabs widely varied from 46 to 220 g kg- 1of fresh initial body weight per week (iBW week- 1) whatever the diet. However, SPC intake and protein intake increased significantly with dietary protein content up to the diet with 40% crude protein, but did not increase further with diets containing 44% and 49% crude protein. The cumulative molts were strongly affected by the VFI levels or energy intake and also, to a lesser extent, by the levels of SPC or protein in diets. Two phases in tissue gain were observed after ecdysis: an initial deposition phase lasting around 30 days followed by a plateau which lasted until the next molt. The daily tissue growth was 16.5% of dry body weight (dry BW) one day after ecdysis and dramatically decreased to 3.6% of dry BW over the first 10 days, then decreased more slowly to the minimum value of 1.3% of dry BW over the next 70 days. During the course of experiment, the best growth (tissue growth and molt frequency) and the best feed efficiency (FCR, PER, retention of proteins and lipids) were obtained with crabs fed on the diet with 40% crude protein. This result was confirmed by a bioenergetic study which showed significantly higher allocation of the energy intake for growth (RE) of crabs fed on diet 40% crude protein. Finally, under our experimental conditions, 1 kg of juvenile crabs required 6.5 ± 1.1 g of protein per day. This level was obtained with the diet SPC-42 that contained 40% of protein of which almost three quarters were derived from SPC. Two hypotheses are proposed to explain the negative effect of high level of SPC or protein on growth and feed efficiency for crabs fed on in diets containing 52% and 60% SPC. Nd isotope constraints on ocean circulation, paleoclimate, and continental drainage during the Jurassic breakup of Pangea Auteur(s) : Dera, Guillaume Prunier, Jonathan Smith, Paul L. Popov, Evgeny Guzhov, Alexander Rogov, Mikhail Delsate, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The breakup of Pangea and onset of growth of the Pacific plate led to several paleoenvironmental feedbacks, which radically affected paleoclimate and ocean chemistry during the Jurassic. Overall, this period was characterized by intense volcanic degassing from large igneous provinces and circum-Panthalassan arcs, new oceanic circulation patterns, and changes in heat and humidity transports affecting continental weathering. Few studies, however, have attempted to unravel the global interactions linking these processes over the long-term. In this paper, we address this question by documenting the global changes in continental drainage and surface oceanic circulation for the whole Jurassic period. For this purpose, we present 53 new neodymium isotope values (εNd(t)) measured on well-dated fossil fish teeth, ichthyosaur bones, phosphatized nodules, phosphatized ooids, and clastic sediments from Europe, western Russia, and North America. Combined with an extensive compilation of published εNd(t) data, our results show that the continental sources of Nd were very heterogeneous across the world. Volcanic inputs from a Jurassic equivalent of the modern Pacific Ring of Fire contributed to radiogenic εNd(t) values (− 4 ε-units) in the Panthalassa Ocean. For the Tethyan Ocean, the average surface seawater signal was less radiogenic in the equatorial region (− 6.3), and gradually lower toward the epicontinental peri-Tethyan (− 7.4), western Russian (− 7.4) and Euro-Boreal seas (− 8.6). Different Nd sources contributed to this disparity, with radiogenic Nd influxes from westward Panthalassan currents or juvenile volcanic arcs in open oceanic domains, and substantial unradiogenic inputs from old Laurasian and Gondwanan shields for the NW Tethyan platforms. Overall, the εNd(t) values of Euro-Boreal, peri-Tethyan, and western Russian waters varied quite similarly through time, in response to regional changes in oceanic circulation, paleoclimate, continental drainage, and volcanism. Three positive shifts in εNd(t) values occurred successively in these epicontinental seas during the Pliensbachian, in the Aalenian-Bathonian interval, and in the mid-Oxfordian. The first and third events are interpreted as regional incursions of warm surface radiogenic currents from low latitudes. The Aalenian-Bathonian shift seems linked to volcanic outbursts in the NW Tethys and/or circulation of deep currents resulting from extensional events in the Hispanic Corridor and reduced influences of boreal currents crossing the Viking Corridor. In contrast, the εNd(t) signals decreased and remained very low (< − 8) during the global warming events of the Toarcian and Late Oxfordian - Early Tithonian intervals. In these greenhouse contexts, a latitudinal expansion of humid belts could have extended the drainage pathways toward boreal Nd sources of Precambrian age and increased the supply of very unradiogenic crustal-derived inputs to seawater. Finally, a brief negative εNd(t) excursion recorded in parallel with regional drops in seawater temperature suggests that southward circulation of cold unradiogenic Arctic waters occurred in the NW Tethys in the Callovian - Early Oxfordian. All these results show that changes in surface oceanic circulation resulting from the Pangean breakup could have regionally impacted the evolution of seawater temperatures in the NW Tethys. Does coastal lagoon habitat quality affect fish growth rate and their recruitment? Insights from fishing and acoustic surveys Auteur(s) : Brehmer, Patrice Laugier, Thierry Kantoussan, J. Éditeur(s) : Academic Press Ltd- Elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Ensuring the sustainability of fish resources necessitates understanding their interaction with coastal habitats, which is becoming ever more challenging in the context of ever increasing anthropogenic pressures. The ability of coastal lagoons, exposed to major sources of disturbance, to provide resources and suitable habitats for growth and survival of juvenile fish is especially important. We analysed three lagoons with different ecological statuses and habitat quality on the basis of their eutrophication and ecotoxicity (Trix test) levels. Fish abundances were sampled using fishing and horizontal beaming acoustic surveys with the same protocols in the same year. The relative abundance of Anguilla anguilla, Dicentrarchus labrax or the Mugilidae group was not an indicator of habitat quality, whereas Atherina boyeri and Sparus aurata appeared to be more sensitive to habitat quality. Fish abundance was higher in the two lagoons with high eutrophication and ecotoxicity levels than in the less impacted lagoon, while fish sizes were significantly higher in the two most severely impacted lagoons. This leads us to suggest low habitat quality may increase fish growth rate (by the mean of a cascading effect), but may reduce lagoon juvenile abundance by increasing larval mortality. Such a hypothesis needs to be further validated using greater investigations which take into account more influences on fish growth and recruitment in such variable environments under complex multi-stressor conditions.
